All good things must come to an end. GEOFFREY CHAUCER
W
hen I was in a stage performance of Canterbury Tales in college and studied Troilus and Criseyde (the origin of the above quote) as an English major in university, I never imagined how much Geoffrey Chaucer’s words would affect our collective mindset decades after I first read them. Because if all good things must end, so must all bad things. It is also said that there must be an ending before there can be a beginning; we must finish one thing before moving on to the next. This is true of jobs, romantic relationships, family situations – all the big stuff – as well as smaller, sometimes silly, things – like Netflix. Does anyone else have to finish watching a series before you can begin a different one? It’s the feeling of completion, that you’ve come full circle. Or the feeling that something has run its course, had its time and is best put behind us. Many want this to happen with the pandemic, because we’re just so very tired of living with ‘measures.’ We don’t want to don masks, social distance or be told we can’t go to a restaurant. We are weary of being denied larger gatherings of family and friends. Many want a swift halt to all the safety protocols we’ve reluctantly
folded into our daily lives and now do without thinking about it. But we are coming to realize that COVID-19 will be something that we have to live with and deal with for a long time, like colds or the flu. Perhaps we’ll have to get yearly shots, like the flu vaccine. One pandemic lesson that has been reinforced with each new variant is that we don’t always get another day and that our time needs to be well spent. Some embrace change, eager for new experiences, while others run away from it, fearing the unknown. Having the strength to make changes is sometimes hard. Putting off making a major move can seem easier than staying put. Complementing Chaucer’s 12th century writings is 20th century thought leader, Tony Robbins: Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change. Are you ready to change something in your life? Leave a thankless work situation or an unfulfilling relationship? Leave behind people or a place that is stifling you? Because if good things must end, so must the bad things in our lives.

BAYFIELD HOME OFFERS LUXURY LIFESTYLE

eclining in a Muskoka chair on the verandah while watching an iconic Lake Huron sunset and listening to the sound of waves gently lapping the shore – this may be the ultimate definition of relaxation. For those seeking a luxurious lakeside lifestyle, this lake house, located in beautiful Bayfield, fulfills their quest. “The casual lakeside lifestyle, set off by a spectacular Cape Cod home,” is how John Crosby, sales representative with Royal LePage Triland Realty, describes
the home that is now on the market. The location is a key attraction, Crosby says. The village of Bayfield exudes charm with its boutiques and eclectic eateries. Its recreational side offers parks, beaches and a marina. He notes that the lake house is located on one of the village’s most highly sought-after venues, Tuyll Street, running along the Huron shoreline. Beach access is just a couple minutes away and it is a short walk to downtown. “We really enjoy the community, with its various activities and cultural

events,” the homeowners say. They cite activities like the weekly Friday farmers’ market and they are excited about a new community project to open a centre for the arts. The two-storey cedar shake house is set on an oversized lot with a spacious fenced rear yard, offering an added layer of privacy. There is room to expand with features such as a pool. The front is graced with a wrap-around main-floor verandah echoed by an upper-level porch that Crosby dubs “the sunset deck,” as the perfect spot for viewing the evening event for which Lake Huron is renowned. “We also love watching the many sailboats on the lake, on beautiful warm summer days,” the homeowners add.
Landscaping, based on designs by Cobble Design in Zurich, includes tiered stone-bordered garden beds. In warmer months these are rich with colourful hydrangea blooms. A curved rear deck and barbecue, flanked by a lower stone patio with fire pit and hot tub, is ideal for outdoor gatherings, say the homeowners. The home’s interior offers 4,200 square feet of living space on three levels. Shiplap walls throughout provide a beach vibe, Crosby says. Expansive windows on every wall allow an abundance of natural light, as well as cooling cross breezes off the lake. There is a walk-in pantry with sink, counter and additional storage. The adjacent living room is anchored by a gas fireplace and smart TV. “We love hosting family gatherings, inside and out,” the homeowners say. The main level includes a separate dining area, laundry room with front-loading washer and dryer, a full bathroom, a comfy den and office area. The den is a favourite spot for the homeowners to relax after a busy day, with a floor-to-ceiling wood-burning stone fireplace at its centre. “It’s very cozy,” Crosby agrees. “You could curl up there with a book and be asleep in no time.” Built-in shelving and cabinets in the living room and den offer extra storage and space to display treasures.

Life is better IN BAYFIELD The Lake Huron village of Bayfield, which traces its history back to an early 19th-century mill town, is a mixture of laid-back comfort and contemporary high style. Its downtown streets are lined with eclectic boutiques and trendy eateries. Eat indoors or out because most restaurants have outdoor patios and a excellent selection of beers, wines (some local offerings of both) and cocktails. Its historic charm is preserved in the local library and historical society, while new energy is being generated by the committee working toward a centre for the arts. In addition to sandy beaches, the village is home to a thriving marina and several parks, including downtown Clan Gregor Square. This central green space, which hosts a weekly three-season Friday farmer’s market, puts on a show with spectacular autumn foliage and sparkling holiday lights. It has a playground, splash pad and large grassy areas, ideal for picnicking.

Sculpted wood floors through the main level include another favourite feature – in-floor radiant heating. This provides an additional level of comfort, keeping the area toasty warm in colder months. The home’s upper level is comprised of four large bedrooms. Three of them, including the primary suite, access the upper verandah. There are also two full bathrooms on this floor. The primary bedroom has a generous walk-in closet and a wall of windows with panoramic views. Its ensuite features a double-basin vanity, glassedin shower and stand-alone bathtub. The finished lower level has an open recreation and games room with television and gas fireplace. To complement this entertainment area, a built-in liquor cabinet and a wine cellar are featured. For practicality, it also includes an additional bedroom, a work-out room and a rough-in for a four-piece bathroom. Crosby has The Lake House listed for sale at $1.999 million.

By Ellen Ashton Haiste
VACATION AT HOME IN YOUR OWN OUTDOOR DREAM SPACE
More homeowners are spending time and money creating or expanding their own ‘vacation destination’ in the backyard as the pandemic wears on. This includes adding decorative fencing, gates and structures that make staying closer to home a true pleasure. TOP Simpson’s Fence uses a long-lasting, low-maintenance vinyl material that looks like wood and comes in a variety of colours to match home or backyard features.
24 Lifestyle March/April 2022
INSET LEFT AND RIGHT Red Iron Design specializes in custom metalwork that allows for inclusion of intricate designs and shapes, like flowers, butterflies and decorated panels, in gates and fences.
RED IRON DESIGN creates elaborate wrought iron fencing that is particularly appropriate for heritage properties.
LEFT Form-A-Fence uses a vinyl material resembling wood that requires little or no maintenance when installing decks and backyard structures. ABOVE RIGHT Simpson’s Fence is finding an increasing demand for backyard fencing as homeowners add pools and other features to their outdoor living spaces.
There has always been a demand for fencing, but it has increased in the past couple of years, says Matt Simpson, manager of Simpson’s Fence in London and third-generation member of the family business that has been enclosing properties across Southwestern Ontario for 70-plus years.
“Folks are spending more time in their backyards as they’re travelling less, so there’s been a good number of renovations, such as pools, that need fencing,” Simpson says. Ruud Terpstra, owner of Form-AFence, also sees more demand for bigger backyard projects that incorporate
sophisticated features made from lowmaintenance materials. His company designs and installs fencing, decks and garden features, like gazebos and arbours. “People are putting more money into sustainable products outside, which is an extension of their living space more than it used to be,” agrees Terpstra. March/April 2022 Lifestyle 25
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT • Ever popular white picket fences, installed by Forma-AFence, are now nearly maintenance-free with no need to re-paint regularly. • Red Iron Design often incorporates inserts of stained glass and other materials into its custom gates and fences. • FormA-Fence is seeing greater demand for large backyard transformations with the addition of focal point structures, like gazebos. • Simpson’s Fence works with clients and landscapers who want to create elaborate fences, blending and coordinating colours and styles.
Knowing that clients do not want to spend time and money maintaining their exterior living spaces, both Form-A-Fence and Simpson’s Fence use a vinyl material that resembles wood – with a textured, grained finish – that is low-maintenance, comes with a life-time warranty and is available in variety of colours. Form-A-Fence uses this product on smaller projects, like decks, and on larger ones, like rebuilding the bell
tower on the Strathroy Town Hall. Simpson’s Fence also offers ornamental wrought iron in its installations. It is a popular choice when combined with long-lasting, less expensive chain-link fencing. The latter is available in galvanized (silver) or coloured finishes: black, brown or white. “We’ll use ornamental iron in the front, where it’s more visible, mixed with black chain link along the sides and back
where it’s needed more to keep animals out or dogs in.” Wrought iron is the exclusive specialty at Red Iron Design, where partners Robert Bobinac and Katie Westervelt design and create custom metalwork. “For backyards, the most common thing we do is a focal point of some sort – a trellis or an arbour or a sculpture,” Westervelt says. Homeowners often fence an entire

Prompted by a desire to spend time in the safety of their own backyards instead of travelling, many homeowners are improving their outdoor spaces with luxury features. yard, but it can be pricey, adds Westervelt, so they often use prefabricated metal fencing for the perimeter but want to elevate the look. Red Iron can add decorative gates and other decorative pieces to the front of the property. It is important to pay attention to entry ways, she says. “A thoughtfully designed entrance can set the tone for the space and create a welcoming feel, similar to how one would emphasize the entrance to their home. A beautifully designed garden gate is the focal point for the entrance. It can preview the design of the backyard space and complement the architecture of the home.” With their custom designs, Bobinac says Red Iron can create any shape the client desires. They often add a variety of decorative accents, such as stained-glass inserts. “We are working on one now that’s a modern design, with copper inserts in the corners.” Form-A-Fence’s Terpstra notes that they can create vinyl inserts for fences and garden structures in different shapes, like butterflies. “We can put the design in the computer and have it cut out for you in any shape, as long as we can get the design in the computer.”

A WINNING COMBINATION
Sifton condo community named project of the year By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
36 Lifestyle March/April 2022
OPPOSITE PAGE The open-concept homes showcase thoughtful designs. Gas fireplaces are a focal point for the great rooms that also feature high tray or vaulted ceilings. ABOVE Kitchens are anchored by sizeable islands with breakfast bar seating and ample working space. LEFT Brick and stone exteriors with covered front porches provide eye-catching curb appeal.
An enviable location, surrounded by nature yet close to urban amenities, has proved to be a winning combination for a new West London active lifestyle community. Sifton Properties’ Whispering Pine at Warbler Woods received the Project of the Year award from the London Home Builders’ Association’s 2021 Awards of Creative Excellence (ACE). The development was one of seven Sifton projects awarded in the annual program that recognizes creativity,
innovation and design in new-home construction and renovation. Whispering Pine checks all those boxes and then some, says sales associate Barb Owens. The location is a major attraction, Owens says. She cites the appeal of nature in neighbouring Warbler Woods, a protected woodland with hiking trails and wildlife watching opportunities. The area also boasts nearby health, retail and entertainment services, just up the road at Sifton’s West 5 community. There is
also a nearby new commercial hub by York Developments. “The amenities are fantastic,” says Owens. “In the immediate area, you’ve got dentists and veterinarians, yoga and wellness, restaurants and grocery stores. The whole lifestyle that Sifton has created at West 5 is very good for the Warbler Woods community.” She describes the neighbourhood itself as friendly and sociable. “Homeowners have good relationships with each other,

largely because of the walkability. People get out and meet their neighbours. The homes clinch the deal. “When clients walk into the model home, they tell me they can feel the quality it exudes,” Owens says. “It is stunning.” In fact, the model was also awarded town home plan of the year as the ACE best multi-family home over $650,000 She gives credit to Sifton’s décor studio designer Gabi Brown, who she describes as “extraordinarily talented with a universal flair for design (and) a trendsetter with very imaginative ideas. She creates a following with our homeowners.” Owens also acknowledges the contributions of Grant Meagher of Meagher’s Drafting and Design, as well as Toby Stolee, Sifton’s director, housing operations, who both played integral
roles in the design of the condominiums. A number of features set the homes apart. The one-floor, two- and threebedroom condos, some with dens, range in size from 1,470 to 1,741 square feet, making them larger than those offered by many competitors, Owens says. High ceilings, at nine feet and extending to 10 feet in tray ceilings, plus transom windows and sidelights on front doors, add to the spacious ambiance. All the homes include laundry rooms with built-in cabinetry, gas fireplaces and generous decks off the great room or kitchen. Primary bedroom retreats include walk-in closets and ensuite bathrooms with showers, which may be modified by adding stand-alone tubs and double vanity basins. Basement levels offer further opportunity for expansion,
incorporating plumbing rough-ins and full-size windows. Owens notes that Sifton is known for customizing home interiors to a client's tastes, depending on the stage of construction at the time of purchase. “We can do any number of changes to the interiors to make them unique. We have in-house designers for décor and for drafting, so we’re set up for that,” she says. For example, a recent Whispering Pine buyer combined the dining area and great room and moved the laundry room to create space for a butler’s pantry off the kitchen. In keeping with Sifton’s commitment to sustainability and environmentallyfriendly characteristics, the Whispering Pine condos are ENERGY STAR rated and incorporate a variety of green features.

CANADA OFFERS GREAT MARCH BREAK DESTINATIONS
T
hough spending a week being coddled at a Caribbean resort seems tempting or the annual family trek to Florida would be nice, the ever-changing pandemic situation may have you re-thinking plans for
WALKING ON SUNSHINE Who does not look for sun and fun on a March Break trip? Canada’s answer: BC’s Sunshine Coast. Though somewhat of a misnomer, this area’s usually mild (but often damp) spring weather can provide escape from Ontario’s snow and freezing temperatures. There are plenty of ways to enjoy British Columbia’s abundant natural beauty. Your adventure will begin right away, trying to spot whales and dolphins, since most tourists fly to 42 Lifestyle March/April 2022
what many value as their favourite week of the year. Experiencing new places, foods and activities in our own country will provide time away while keeping the family safe. Here are some fresh ideas to consider when choosing a March Break destination.
Vancouver and then enjoy a ferry ride to the coast, which is not accessible by car. • www.sunshinecoastcanada.com
BE BAD IN THE BADLANDS If you had a trip to Arizona planned, heading to Drumheller, Alberta will satisfy your taste for rugged natural beauty. From ambling along the city’s 18-kilometre pedestrian trail to more challenging hiking through the rugged beauty of the Badlands, on the Hoodoos Trail or
through Horseshoe Canyon, there are options to match your desired level of exertion. But dress warmly because though the weather is dry the temperatures can be cold, often below freezing. No trip to this area would be complete without a stop at the Royal Tyrrell Museum to visit its large collection of dinosaur skeletons. There is a reason that Drumheller is called the ‘dinosaur capital of the world.’ • www.traveldrumheller.com
TWINKLE LITTLE STAR Little ones who are into astronomy will love it when you plan a spring sojourn to Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park in Saskatchewan. Designated a Dark Sky Preserve in 2004, it lets visitors escape light pollution under an enormous blanket of stars and hear stories of the constellations from park rangers. Rough it at the Dark Sky Campground in a heated tent or go for a more luxurious experience at the Resort at Cypress Hills. • www.tourismsaskatchewan.com/provincialpark/3033/cypress-hills-interprovincial-park
GET YOUR THOR ON On your selfie-tour of Canada, Gimli, Manitoba is a must. A shot of you standing with a giant Viking (4.6 metres) is reason enough to visit this little town located along the shore of Lake Winnipeg, 90 kilometres north of the capital city. In March, you can enjoy the tenth annual Gimli Ice Festival, the first weekend of the month. You may want to visit again in the summer to enjoy its beach life and the annual Viking Festival, called Islendingadagurinn. Founded by former Icelanders, the town’s statue and annual festival pay tribute to that heritage. • www.travelmanitoba.com/places/must-see/gimli
GO NATURAL Most often when Niagara Falls comes to mind, it is with touristy Clifton Hills or one of the several mammoth family-friendly hotels. But there are many natural wonders to consider when planning a trip to Niagara. Hike through verdant Carolinian forest in the Niagara Gorge. You will get a workout traversing the staircases that take you through this hiking area. It is worth it be-
cause Niagara Glen overlooks the river and its amazing whirlpool. • www.niagaraparks.com
A FRENCH KISS Named one of the prettiest streets in the world by Architectural Digest Magazine in 2021, Rue du Petit Champlain in Quebec City is a taste of Europe. Best viewed at the top of the famous Escalier Casse-Cou (breakneck stairs), this colourful, winding pedestrian alley takes you by quaint shops and sidewalk cafes. You will also find the Funicular on this street; it will transport you up to Dufferin Terrace to look out over the St. Lawrence River, and the beautiful Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Just a few minutes further is another mustsee spot in one of Canada’s oldest cities – Place Royal, where the final scene in the movie “Catch Me If You Can” was filmed.

pproaching her 65th birthday, Rose Johnston wanted to feel better when she looked in the mirror. The appearance of her skin with lines, wrinkles and sagging bothered her. She thought that a facelift might be the answer but shied away from such an invasive procedure. She was on the hunt for alternatives that would bring about the dramatic results she desired without resorting to surgery. After talking to Charlene Jones, co-owner of London’s Artistic Esthetic Spa, Johnston decided to try a new type of treatment that the spa was offering – Opus Plasma Laser. Though the treatment was somewhat painful, she loved the results so much that she told her friend Elaine Knight, who is 63, about it. Knight was pleased with her own results, and, like Johnston, has now had two treatments. Both are planning to have a third. “It has made a huge difference in my confidence; I really like what I see when I look in the mirror first thing in the morning. It makes a difference to how I start my day,” explains Johnston, whose treatment area was concentrated on her face. Though she also had her face and neck treated, Knight was most concerned about her décolleté area, disliking how crepey her skin looked from long-term sun damage. “It’s

made a big difference on my chest. The discolouration is gone and my skin is much smoother.” According to Jones’ business partner Allyson Taylor, the Opus machine uses a different type of laser technology, mixing oxygen and nitrogen to create plasma sparks, to resurface the skin. “When it is ‘injuring’ the skin it goes deeply through the layers to create channels but not puncturing like micro-needling. You shed the skin layers as your body repairs and heals itself, producing collagen and elastin in the skin again.” Both women and men – ages 30 to 80, with the majority in their 50s and 60s – have been receiving Opus treatments at Artistic Esthetic Spa. When a client comes in to talk about having this type of treatment, Taylor or Jones talks with her/ him about the biggest concerns for the skin, asking what type of results she/he is looking for. Are the expectations realistic? Factors that would rule out this treatment include diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding and having open sores.
The procedure, aftercare and costs are explained at the initial meeting. The procedure itself takes 15 to 20 minutes, but an additional 30 minutes are needed prior to starting, to allow numbing cream to be effective in helping with the pain. The laser is described by most as “feeling like currents burning the skin.” Aftercare is crucial, with three days to a week of downtime. For the first three days, the area must be kept moist. Taylor recommends using Aquaphor, a thick gel-cream, to moisturize and protect the newly revealed skin. Avoiding getting the face wet or exposure to the sun during this time is also crucial. After the initial healing period, and when returning to daily life, Taylor says that a good skincare routine is a must, including a quality moisturizer
ceutical-grade skincare products from Vivier. The spa also receives medical consultation from Dr. Shelendra Joshi. The Opus Plasma Laser treatment tightens and improves the quality of skin as it removes the outer layers, and the resurfacing reveals new skin. “It just feels so soft,” says Johnston. “I love the way it feels now.” She notices the biggest improvement in the deep lines around her mouth and has experienced lifting of the labial fold area around her nose. Knight concurs saying that the rosacea on her forehead, nose cheeks and chin has been improved. “I’m really happy with the results,” she says, “even happier than I thought I’d be. It’s taken five years off my face.” According to Johnston, “It’s like a do-over for your skin. It’s a chance to have the skin you had years ago and to take really good care of it.”
and daily use of high-SPF sunscreen. Johnston says it felt like a bad sunburn but was better after STOCK the third day. PHOTO Knight found the treatment less painful, with the redness returning to normal after a week. Both saw results after a week of healing but are continuing to see improvement. Maximum results develop over six months as the skin rejuvenates. Procedure costs range from $600 to $1,000, depending on which areas are treated. Purchasing a package of treatments lowers pricing. he story may sound a bit like a Bob and Doug McKenzie sketch. Two long-time friends start brewing their own beer with a home kit, experimenting and developing recipes. They bought a building in Grand Bend in April 2020 and began to renovate it, with ensuing delays due to the pandemic and the age of the building. They opened Brewster’s Mill Brewing Company in the summer of 2021. The difference between Mark Boogemans and Jason Wilband and the McKenzies is business planning. While Bob and Doug famously ad-libbed around the campfire, Mark and Jason pooled their knowledge with that of their wives, Laura Boogemans and Michelle Wilband, and son Nick Boogemans and his fiancée Kaitlyn Cross. “We have manufacturing, purchasing, engineering management, teaching experience,” says Laura. “We all have knowledge from business before.” Some of that experience comes from Mark’s family business, the Blue Water Motel established by his great-grandparents. As a fourth-generation entrepreneur
in Grand Bend, contributing to the community is a key component of the business. That commitment starts with the name. Brewster’s Mill was Grand Bend’s original moniker. Benjamin Brewster erected a dam in 1832 for a sawmill. Local farmers blamed it for flooding and took the law into their own hands. Read the story on the website at brewstersmill.com/history/. The past is also the jumping-off point for the beers’ names: the stout is called 1832; Crooked Waters is the cream ale; and River Pigs for the IPA. The honey blonde ale is a nod to modern beach crowds – Sand In My Thong. “We’re always looking for new names,” says Laura. The company also adds seasonal specials, such as a Christmas holiday spice and chocolate oatmeal stout. Local wine and cider, as well as nonalcoholic drinks – pop, juice, kombucha, non-alcoholic beer – are available. Popcorn and light snacks are offered, but the brewery does not operate a kitchen. Patrons may bring food in. Curbside pickup is available for online beer orders. The rustic taproom occupies the main floor, and a 40-seat room upstairs can be

rented. Live music and games encourage guests to linger. “We visited hundreds of breweries and took what ideas we liked,” says Laura. Local artwork will soon be added. Brewster’s Mill uses locally sourced ingredients and aims to use 100 per cent recyclable and biodegradable products and green initiatives. Innovative brewing technology saves water. Opening a hospitality business in a pandemic has presented challenges. “We all pitch in,” says Laura. “We’re all crosstrained for everything. There are always two owners in the building.” Mark adds they are dedicated to giving back to the community. “The spent grains are given for feed to farmers. We donate to plastic reduction in the lakes, as well as the Lions’ Club and Jessica’s House.” Perhaps the story is like the McKenzie brothers, started as an SCTV filler to mock and satisfy Canadian content requirements. Brewster’s Mill started to satisfy two bros’ love of beer and is growing into a successful enterprise. Who knows how it will expand, eh? n

The motors get their power from a 78-kWh battery pack. At maximum capacity it provides about 360 kilometres of driving range, although Volvo says it plans to issue remote software updates over the course of ownership to improve range capacity. The battery can be recharged to 80 per cent of its capacity in 40 minutes with the use of a DC fast-charging station. Our model home tour takes you to London, Ilderton and Kilworth, then along the shores of two of our neighbouring lakeside communities: Port Stanley and Grand Bend.
2022 MODEL HOME TOUR
Domus Developments Port Stanley NEW CONDO ENCLAVE COMES TO LANDINGS Landings Port Stanley is located on the top of the hill on East Street south of Dexter Line. Construction will begin this spring on Phase 2 of the development of 52 attached condominiums. The two-bedroom homes will be themed with deep and contrasting colour choices, as well as varied material choices. This will tie them into the lakeside character of the village. Vaulted ceilings over the openconcept kitchens and great rooms, along with extra-high nine-foot ceilings throughout, afford a feeling of space and grandeur, says interior designer Pat Kadlecik. Large rear windows with transoms fill the space with abundant light. Home interiors include engineered hardwood floors and ceramic tile in kitchens and bathrooms. Quartz
counters and undermount sinks are standard. Ensuite bathrooms feature custom glass showers, which are normally an upgrade. Kadlecik says buyers can choose from a selection of colours to pair with their choice of black or nickel lighting packages. They can also customize details. For instance, they can incorporate crown moulding or kitchen pantry cabinets. Basement levels are ready for upgraded finishing with rough ins for bathrooms and full-size windows. All units have covered front porches and rear wood decks. End units have two-car garages. Landings is nestled in a natural setting in the Lake Erie village that has long been a drawing card for boaters and sun seekers.

THE ART OF IRON Creating custom metallic decor By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
A
rt takes many forms. At Red Iron Design, the artistry is expressed in custom ironwork. Partners Robert Bobinac and Katie Westervelt have been designing and crafting metalwork for homes and businesses for more than a decade, carving out a niche market across the region. “We focus on things you can’t get anywhere else, detailed ornate ironwork that’s hard to find,” Westervelt says. “We’re known for doing things we’ve never done before. If someone can imagine it, we can figure out how to do it.” Westervelt, a graduate of Fanshawe College’s interior design program, is the designer. She works with clients, fleshing out their ideas and offering options. Then she draws up a kind of blueprint, including measurements. Bobinac, who grew up helping in his father’s welding shop and studied industrial design at Fanshawe, then fabricates the piece. He has also travelled extensively through Europe and Asia, absorbing
cultures and architecture, and brings that expertise to his craft. What sets Red Iron Design apart, the partners maintain, is the attention to design and customizing the end product to fulfill the client’s vision. “Our focus is very niche and design specific,” Westervelt says. That applies to a vast assortment of projects. “We’ll do anything and everything,” Bobinac says. Much of their work is exterior fencing and gates, along with landscape décor like arbors, trellises and garden sculptures. With that, they have developed a specialty in preserving the character of heritage homes and historic sites, such as London’s Eldon House. But they also create indoor furnishings, from coffee tables, kitchen island bases and range hoods to sculptural wall art. Decorative elements, such as inserts of materials – copper, brass, and stained glass – are often used to enhance the projects. In the commercial realm, they create

specialty signage, privacy panels and furnishings such as restaurant tables, stools and benches. With everything they do, the bottom line is quality, the partners say. “I’m really picky,” Bobinac asserts. “He focuses on craftsmanship and takes pride in doing things to the highest standard,” Westervelt adds. “It’s a quality product in the end.”

ZOOM FATIGUE Esthetic treatments that help By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
T
Dr. Arjang Yazdani, plastic surgeon and founder of Yazdani Aesthetics.
here has never been a better time for putting your best face – or body – forward. Over the past decade esthetic treatment options have experienced a boom and in the last few years their popularity has soared, according to Dr. Arjang Yazdani, plastic surgeon and founder of Yazdani Aesthetics in London. He attributes this to a combination of improved techniques and treatments with greater awareness of these options thanks to social media. Some are inspired when they witness friends and family experience the benefits. “It’s not a foreign concept anymore,” Yazdani says. “When I started my practice 14 years ago esthetics was still relatively new to most patients, not something many people had a really good understanding about. Today, patients come in well informed. They’ve read so much; they’ve seen so much. They’ve researched, and they know about the treatments. And they’ve got it right.” The demand in the past couple of years has been further driven by people, more than ever, seeing themselves in video conferences, he says. “We
see every detail in our faces and we’re our own harshest critics; we see every little flaw we want to have addressed.” With advances in techniques and devices in recent years, the industry is able to address those desires. “What we’ve seen in the past three to five years is new devices coming out and technologies that are far superior to previous years. These have given us options that weren’t available in the past,” says Yazdani. One example is the ability to combine complementary treatments that work together to provide greater benefits. “Every treatment does something a little bit different, so when you combine them, you get better results without having to overdo any one of them.” This goes a long way to avoiding what he calls the “overdone look,” something that is a major concern for many patients. “No one wants to look in a way that others will realize they’ve had esthetic treatments,” he says. “So, subtlety is the key to a natural appearance.” He cites the examples of Botox and fillers, which used to be among the most common aesthetic treatments. Yazdani says they are still effective treatments but are often now combined with other techniques to both fill and lift tissue. This combination can improve tissue and skill quality, providing results that are more subtle and natural. These esthetic advances have also blurred the lines between non-surgical and surgical options. A decade ago, Yazdani says, non-surgical treatments were often viewed as options to help patients until they were ready for surgical treatment. But, today, those options can yield excellent results and eliminate the need for surgery. These trends, he says, have resulted in more patients, who range from 30 to 80-plus, seeking consultations at his clinic.

BUILDING ON HISTORY Company offers expertise for projects

opp’s Buildall traces its roots back 145 years to 1877 when the business began as a stone quarry selling building blocks. Today, the family business offers a full complement of building materials for contractors and homeowners. It is one of the largest suppliers in Southwestern Ontario. “What started as a lime and brick quarry has evolved into a full-service home building and improvement store that, in addition to carrying building materials, also includes specialty divisions to assist customers on their shopping and design paths,” says marketing manager Cheryl Neale. “Since we’ve been a heavy contractor-based supplier, many retail customers don’t realize we have all these specialties available.” Copp’s Buildall operates four London
locations, with three of them having specialized design centres. The downtown store on York Street is the Design Centre, where kitchens and bathrooms are showcased. Paint products and flooring solutions are on display. The latter includes carpet, vinyl, tile and hardwood. Copp’s design experts believe kitchens to be the heart of the home and will help plan a renovation for this area, keeping functionality and style top of mind. Copp’s East London Outdoor Design Centre, on Dundas Street, just west of Veterans Memorial Parkway, is the go-to location for outside living. All decking, railing and hardware options to customize backyard spaces are featured, with experts on hand who use design software to provide 3D renderings of the transformations. Once decisions are made, installers bring it to life. The company’s Trim and Door Design
Copp’s Buildall has a long history of providing products and service in southwestern Ontario.
Centre is located on Fanshawe Park Road West in North London’s Hyde Park neighbourhood. It features a house built into the showroom that displays options and possibilities for trim and door design. The display includes windows and doors that increase energy efficiency and curb appeal. Exterior siding is also featured at this location. With these specialty services and expertise, Neale says the company is “definitely a full-service building supply provider for projects customers are doing indoors or ones they’re doing outside.”

AS YOU LIKE IT London Fine Furniture offers complete customization By Ellen Ashton-Haiste
Owners Linda and Harold Duesbury with Cooper.
W
hen it comes to home furnishings, one size does not always fit all. When furniture pieces need a few inches trimmed off, London Fine Furniture has the answer. “A specialty at our store is customization,” says Harold Duesbury, owner with his wife, Linda. “It’s what sets us apart from other stores.” If a customer wants a headboard six inches taller than the display model or needs a dresser six inches shorter to fit a space, Duesbury has manufacturers who are happy to accommodate. “They’ll do whatever you want.”
This retailer deals with manufacturers that construct specialty furniture pieces. Duesbury cites the example of a recent customer seeking a bench that looked like a church pew. He contacted a supplier who quickly responded with a picture of a similar bench recently built for another client. London Fine Furniture’s suppliers offer myriad choices of woods in numerous colours and have dozens of selections of knobs and handles. One of the upholstery companies that Duesbury uses offers more than 400 fabrics. Customers can have a specific piece – like a sectional – built just for them, in their desired size and shape. Duesbury says. “With us, you can build the sec-
tional the way you want. You can add a chaise or a cuddler (That’s a bigger chaise for two people.) or just choose a regular sectional with options for colour or fabric such as leather.” That ability to mix and match also applies to combining pieces from more than one company. For example, when buying a dining room set, Duesbury says customers will sometimes pick a table from one manufacturer and then look around and find a set of chairs from another. “They all have wood colours that are very similar,” he says. “And most of the companies have 15 or 20 different styles. So, pick what you like, and we’ll make it happen.” n
