on è un caso che Castiglioncello, ridente località sul mare della Toscana, sia stata definita la ‘’perla del Tirreno’’. Il suo fascino discreto, la folta e ombreggiata pineta, la spiaggia di sabbia finissima e il mare cristallino sono solo alcuni degli aspetti che l’hanno resa tanto amata. La lontananza dalle trafficate vie di comunicazione le ha consentito di mantenere il suo carattere pittoresco, quasi fiabesco e talvolta selvaggio che ha ammaliato negli anni artisti, poeti e numerosi personaggi del mondo dello spettacolo come i grandi Alberto Sordi e Marcello Mastroianni. Castiglioncello vede un’importante svolta nella sua storia nel 1889, quando il barone Lazzaro Patrone iniziò i lavori per costruirvi la sua prestigiosa dimora, il Castello Pasquini. Il barone demolì i vecchi edifici preesistenti e trasformò i campi incolti in un magnifico parco. Non solo: offrì generosamente parte della sua estesa proprietà per destinarla alla realizzazione della stazione ferroviaria del paese, chiedendo che questa fosse costruita secondo lo stesso stile del suo castello per creare armonia tra i due importanti edifici.

Its discreet charm, the thick and shady pine grove, the fine sand beach and the crystal clear sea are just some of its distinctive traits that have made it such a loved place. Its being away from traffic congested roads has allowed it to maintain its picturesque, almost fairy-tale and sometimes wild nature, which over the years has bewitched artists, poets and many celebrieties such as Alberto Sordi and Marcello Mastroianni. 1889 was a very important year in the history of Castiglioncello. It was when the Baron Lazzaro Patrone started the works for building Castello Pasquini, his prestigious residence. The Baron demolished the old preexisting buildings and turned the wild fields into a magnificent park. Moreover, he kindly offered a part of his vast property for the realization of the railroad station of the town. He just asked that it was built following the style of his castle in order to create harmony between the two important buildings.

Travolta da una fama del tutto inattesa, Castiglioncello diventa meta prediletta dei grandi del cinema che la eleggono location ideale per le loro vacanze estive e che qui iniziano ad acquistare splendide residenze. La storia di Azimut-Benetti SpA ha origine nel 1969, dall’intraprendenza dell’allora studente universitario piemontese Paolo Vitelli che fonda Azimut Srl - società per il noleggio di barche a vela - trasformando la passione giovanile per il mare in un importante business. Nel 1970 alcuni marchi prestigiosi della nautica, come Amerglass, Westerly, British Powles e Draco, affidano alla neonata azienda contratti di distribuzione in Italia delle loro imbarcazioni. Una forza che acquista energia dalla leggerezza spirituale del prodotto unita a quella materiale, garantita dall’applicazione di materiali come la fibra di carbonio e dalla ricerca di un’altissima resa idrodinamica.» Come ogni altro modello firmato AzimutYachts anche il 72 ha l’obiettivo dichiarato di rappresentare il riferimento nel proprio segmento per volumetria, razionalità degli spazi, eleganza e performance. Lungo 22,60 metri e largo 5,60 metri il layout prevede 4 cabine tutte con bagno, di cui una armatoriale a tutta larghezza con bagno en suite e caratteristiche finestrature verticali full glass senza montanti, per un totale di 8 ospiti. Il flybridge è enorme, oltre 37 metri quadri progettati per la massima versatilità di utilizzo. The strength of the 72 lies mainly in its capacity to marry a balanced form with the kind of style research that guarantee the best relationship between the design of the exteriors and the enjoyment of the internal spaces. A strength that draws added energy from the product’s spiritual levity alongside that of the materials used, ensured by the use of materials such as carbon fibre and the quest for the ultimate in hydrodynamic performance”. Like every other Azimut brandedYacht, the 72 also has the clear intent of representing the model of reference for its own segment in terms of volumes, rational use of space, elegance and performance. Il design degli interni è stato curato da Carlo Galeazzi che ha affiancato l’ufficio tecnico e l’ufficio stile di Azimut Yachts per offrire all’armatore del 72 uno yacht innovativo nel layout e nel decor. Il main deck è su unico livello, senza gradini a interromperne la fluidità spaziale ed è concepito come un open space ma con tre aree di funzione ben distinte, relax, food and drive. Il salone all’ingresso di oltre 13 mq è dedicato interamente al relax, con il grande divano a “C” e relativo divano contrapposto sulla murata destra che garantiscono 8 comodi posti a sedere. Nella parte centrale del main deck si trova la cucina open space che si sviluppa su 4 lati. La stessa zona pranzo è un piccolo gioiello: gode di una finestratura a tutta altezza cielo-terra dalla quale entrano grandi fasci di luce che riempiono la stanza. A estrema prua la zona guida, impreziosita da due sedili sportivi regolabili dove possono trovare spazio due schermi da 15” da cui consultare tutte le informazioni di bordo e di navigazione. The design of the interiors is the work of Carlo Galeazzi, assisted by the technical and style departments of Azimut Yachts in order to provide the 72 boat owner with an innovative yacht in terms of layout and décor. The main deck is all on one level, with no steps breaking up its spatial flow and is conceived as an open space but with three very specific functional areas, relaxation, food and piloting. The living room entrance space is over 13 sq. m. and entirely given over to relax, with a large “C” shaped sofa faced by another sofa set along the right bulwark providing a total of 8 comfortable seats. The dining area is another small jewel: it boasts window space that goes from floor to ceiling which allows light to burst in and fill the room, highlighting the crystal table and the leather seating. At the prow end the wheelhouse, enhanced by two adjustable sports seats that can house two 15” screens on which one can consult all on board and navigation information. Besides the wheelhouse there is also a comfortable dinette where one can sit and enjoy the trip or an informal meal.

This stupendous villa, that dominates the hills on the left bank of the Arno, is just 5 kilometres from Florence and is rich with history. From 1498 to 1517 it was the property of the powerful Del Gioconda family, of the famous Mona Lisa, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, called “La Gioconda,” who was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in about 1505. Agli inizi del ‘900 la marchesa Nathalie Antinori apportò un’importante lavoro di rinnovamento alla villa, grazie anche al contributo del fratello architetto. Una targa in sua memoria si trova proprio al centro del giardino e recita: “Tutto qua intorno è ricordo di Nathalie Antinori. Questa villa da lei trasformata, questo giardino, furono opera sua e svago ai suoi giorni più felici. Nella dolcezza del ricordo qui vive il suo spirito.’’ La leggenda di famiglia narra che fu opera della sorella della marchesa, Ernestina Ludolf, il disegno della villa che oggi appare sull’etichetta delle bottiglie del vino Chianti prodotto dagli Antinori, bottiglie che non contengono solo vino ma la storia di un’intera dinastia. At the beginning of the 1900s Marchesa Nathalie Antinori undertook major renovations at the villa, thanks to the contribution of her bother who was an architect. A plaque in her memory can be found in the heart of the garden and it reads: “All of this around us is a memory of Nathalie Antinori. Il nome Chianti ha probabilmente origini etrusche e in effetti fu proprio nel periodo etrusco che iniziò il disboscamento della zona per poter coltivare la vite. A history that spans the centuries... The name Chianti most likely has Etruscan origins and it was precisely during the Etruscan period that the deforestation of the area began, so as to allow for the cultivation of grape vines. Dal Medioevo ai giorni nostri Per più di mille anni, dal Medioevo ai giorni nostri, le mura di questo castello hanno assistito silenziose alla vita di corte, ai cambi generazionali, alle lotte di potere, a banchetti e matrimoni, al cambiare delle stagioni. La prima testimonianza storica che abbiamo del castello risale al mese di luglio dell’anno 790, 17° anno del regno di Carlo Magno in Italia, quando la proprietà andò in dono da tre fratelli longobardi a un monastero nei pressi di Firenze, come era spesso in uso all’epoca. Il castello fu a lungo protagonista delle vicende politiche tra la città di Siena e Firenze, che si contendevano aspramente il controllo sui territori circostanti. Quando nel 1176 il Chianti Meridionale venne consegnato con decreto alla città di Firenze, il proprietario del castello ribadì con forza che il maniero sarebbe rimasto sotto il suo potere e sotto il controllo senese, per poi cambiare bandiera nel 1217 quando, messo alle strette, con una mossa politica assai astuta vendette il castello e tutti i suoi possedimenti al Vescovo di Firenze. Soli otto giorni dopo, il Vescovo concesse di nuovo indietro i possedimenti in cambio di un giuramento di fedeltà a lui e alla città di Firenze, non senza far scatenare le truppe senesi che, offese dal tradimento, assalirono il castello costringendo infine alla resa i proprietari. Dopo alcuni passaggi di proprietà, il castello fu sapientemente trasformato negli anni ‘70 in una splendida struttura ricettiva, oggi fiore all’occhiello del Chianti.

From the middle ages to the present day For over a thousand years, from the middle ages up to the present day, the castle’s walls have silently witnessed court life, generational change, power struggles, banquets and weddings, and the changing of the seasons. The first historical evidence that we have of the castle dates back to the month of July of the year 790, the 17th year of Charlemagne’s reign in Italy, when the property was donated to a monastery near Florence by three Lombard brothers - a custom that often took place at the time. For a long time the castle was subject to political clashes between Siena and Florence, who bitterly fought for the control over the surrounding areas. When, in 1176, Southern Chianti was handed over by decree to the city of Florence, the owner of the castle forcefully insisted that the castle would remain under his power and under the control of Siena, only to then pass over to the enemy in 1217 when, cornered by a very smart political move, sold the castle and all his possessions to the Bishop of Florence. Only eight days later, the Bishop granted back the possessions in exchange for an oath of allegiance to him and to the city of Florence, which of course set off the Sienese troops who, offended by the betrayal, attacked the castle, forcing the owners to surrender. After several changes of ownership, in the 1970’s the castle was expertly converted into a beautiful accommodation facility, now the crown jewel of Chianti. LIONARD

Tra gli inizi del 1400 e il 1446, anno della sua morte, Filippo Brunelleschi è l’architetto della Repubblica Fiorentina incaricato di progettare e costruire le fortificazioni militari nei territori intorno alla città. Nello stesso periodo, anche i signori delle grandi ville di campagna sono costretti a fortificare le loro dimore con mura e torri per difendersi dagli attacchi delle truppe nemiche.

etween 1420 and 1436, in Florence, Filippo Brunelleschi built the biggest dome in the world, bigger than the one on the Pantheon in Rome, which was considered the biggest of the time, so much that a legend believed it was the devil’s work. This castle in Tuscany, near Florence, once owned by the Pucci, a noble Florentine family, can be attributed to the first years of construction of the dome of Florence’s Cathedral and to its great Renaissance architect, as discovered by professor Massimo Ricci, one of the main experts on Brunelleschi’s architecture. Between the beginning of the 1400s and 1446, the year of his death, Filippo Brunelleschi was the official architect of the Florentine Republic, in charge of the design and construction of the military defensive walls of the land around the city. In that same period, the owners of big villas in the Tuscan countryside were also forced to fortify their homes with walls and towers to protect themselves from the attacks of opposing troops.

“La mia ipotesi”, afferma Ricci, “è che a Filippo Brunelleschi fu affidata la progettazione e la conduzione dei lavori di una villa fortificata, poi diventata castello, del tutto simile alla Villa della Petraia, già attribuita a lui da tempo”. Molti sono i motivi che portano Ricci a questa conclusione, tra questi, che il castello sia interamente costruito in mattoni, una rivoluzione per quell’epoca. Proprio nell’anno in cui viene edificato, nel 1424, Brunelleschi abbandona l’utilizzo della pietra nella costruzione della Cupola del Duomo ed inizia ad adoperare i mattoni. “Nessun altro in quegli anni se non Filippo Brunelleschi poteva essere in grado di fare una cosa del genere”, prosegue Ricci, “in questo castello la perfezione nell’utilizzo dei mattoni è spinta a tale punto che strutture architettoniche normalmente realizzate in pietra sono state sistematicamente costruite in mattoni”. “My theory,” Ricci maintains, “is that Filippo Brunelleschi was commissioned with the design and construction of a fortified villa, which then became a castle, in all ways similar to Villa La Petraia, which was attributed to him long ago”. Ricci has reached this conclusion for several reasons, but the most convincing is that the castle was entirely built bricks, a revolution for that time. In 1424, the year the castle was built, Brunelleschi stops using stone for the dome of the cathedral and starts using bricks. “No one else at that time, except Filippo Brunelleschi, could have done something of this kind,” Ricci continues, “the use of bricks in this castle is so perfect that even architectural structures usually made in stone were systematically built with bricks.”

Per questo, durante la guerra tra i sostenitori dei Medici e la Repubblica Fiorentina, il castello fu teatro di grandi battaglie e fu più volte occupato e poi restituito alla famiglia che ne era proprietaria. Una nota storica narra come, durante una delle battaglie, fossero rimasti uccisi tutti gli adulti della famiglia, che quindi rischiava di estinguersi. Fortunatamente, però, una serva di colore salvò il primogenito, fuggendo dai sotterranei e garantendone la discendenza.

The walkable area around all the perimeter of the castle’s high walls outlooks the entire surrounding valley and is essential for keeping the territory under control. For this reason, during the war between supporters of the Medici family and the Florentine Republic, the castle was the focus of big battles and was seized several times before being given back to its owners. An historical note tells us how, during one of these battles, all adult members of the family had been killed. But luckily a black servant managed to save the first-born son, escaping through the basements and therefore securing the family’s future offspring.

Non solo, all’interno del castello ci sono numerose opere come portali, finestre, arredi realizzati in perfetto stile brunelleschiano, che agli inizi del 1400, con lui ancora vivente, non potevano essere progettati da altri architetti se non lui. Di notevole interesse è poi la notizia che il fratello dell’allora proprietario del castello, Giovanni di Antonio Pucci, era fornitore di calce e sabbia per la costruzione della Cupola del Duomo, e questo dimostra un contatto diretto con il Brunelleschi, che come è risaputo controllava di persona la qualità e i costi di tutti i materiali utilizzati in questa grande impresa. “Ma quello che mi ha definitivamente convinto, è stato la scoperta di uno strano ballatoio che poggia su un sistema di mezze volte che non potrebbe stare in piedi e sarebbe dovuto crollare. There are several works inside the castle, such as doors, windows, decors, perfectly realized in Brunelleschi’s style, which at the beginning of the 1400s, while he was still alive, could have been designed only by him and not some other architect. Oggi il castello è uno dei più belli in Italia: maestoso, con le quattro possenti torri angolari e le mura merlate, percorribili per tutto il perimetro, da cui si domina la valle in ogni direzione. Circondato da vigneti e oliveti, della proprietà fanno parte circa 1200 ettari di terreno con ben 25 case coloniche, una villa del ‘700 immersa in un parco di 1152 mq con giardino all’italiana e un agriturismo con 10 appartamenti. Nel castello, la cui superficie interna è di circa 3.000 metri quadrati, si trovano sontuosi saloni affrescati, la sala per le feste che può ospitare fino a 180 persone, il cortile interno in stile rinascimentale, la cappella privata per le funzioni religiose. Infine una curiosità: il pozzo nel loggiato era in realtà l’uscita di un passaggio segreto del castello. The castle is among the most beautiful in Italy today: majestic, with its four mighty corner towers and its entirely walkable crenellated walls, from which it is possible to overlook the valley in all directions. Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the property includes about 3000 acres of land with no less than 25 farmhouses, a villa dating to the 1700s surrounded by a 1152 square meters park, and a holiday farm house with 10 apartments. Filippo Brunelleschi nacque a Firenze nel 1377 e iniziò la sua carriera come orafo e scultore. Ma la sua gloria è dovuta all’incredibile talento come architetto che lo portò a realizzare la magnifica cupola del Duomo di Firenze, allora la più grande del mondo, capolavoro che occupò quasi tutta la sua carriera fino al 1446, anno della sua morte, e che oggi è simbolo del Rinascimento Fiorentino. Brunelleschi studiò una cupola in pietra e mattoni, una grande novità per quel periodo, con costoloni in pietra a sostegno. La straordinaria tecnica utilizzata rendeva la struttura autoportante quindi capace di sorreggersi durante la costruzione. Gli studi effettuati dal Prof. Ricci sul castello cercano conferma della paternità del Brunelleschi proprio a partire da queste affinità. Filippo Brunelleschi was born in Florence in 1377 and began his career as a goldsmith and sculptor. But his glory is due to his incredible talent as an architect, which led to the creation of the extraordinary dome of Florence’s Cathedral, the biggest of the time, a masterpiece that occupied most of his career until 1446, the year he died, and which is today the symbol of Florentine Renaissance. Brunelleschi designed a dome made of bricks and stones, a big novelty for that period, with stone ribs for support. The use of this extraordinary technique made the structure self-supporting, so it was able to sustain itself during construction. The studies made on the castle by professor Ricci looked for confirmation of Brunelleschi’s authorship starting precisely from these similarities. In fact, while working on the dome, he also designed private homes in Florence and on its neighboring hills, introducing the technical and architectural innovations he was developing and using materials that then became typical of the architecture of the Renaissance.

OFFICINE PANERAI DEPOSITA IL BREVETTO DEL RADIOMIR Per soddisfare le necessità militari della Regia Marina con cui già da alcuni anni collabora, Officine Panerai crea il Radiomir, una polvere a base di radio che consente di rendere luminosi quadranti di strumenti e congegni di mira. Il riferimento al nome “Radiomir” è documentato nel supplemento del brevetto depositato in Francia il 23 marzo del 1916. Quello del Radiomir sarà il primo dei numerosi brevetti registrati che contraddistinguono la storia di innovazione di Panerai.

IL PRIMO PROTOTIPO DI RADIOMIR Alla vigilia della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, Panerai crea i primi prototipi del modello che prenderà il nome di Radiomir per gli incursori del Comando del 1° Gruppo Sommergibili della Regia Marina Italiana. Tale modello ancora oggi possiede molte delle caratteristiche di un tempo. Dagli archivi storici della Marina si apprende che questi prototipi vennero prodotti nel 1936, in appena dieci esemplari.

IL LUMINOR Una nuova sostanza auto luminosa viene protetta da brevetto registrato l’11 gennaio del 1949 con il marchio “Luminor”. Dal suo nome, Officine Panerai prende ispirazione per l’altro suo modello storico dopo l’orologio Radiomir, il Luminor appunto.

1993

LA PRIMA COLLEZIONE DI OFFICINE PANERAI Officine Panerai presenta al pubblico una collezione di tre serie di orologi in edizione limitata: il Luminor, il Luminor Marina e il Mare Nostrum che si ispiravano agli storici modelli creati per gli incursori della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, diventando da subito oggetto di culto per molti collezionisti e appassionati. La presentazione della collezione avviene nel Settembre del 1993 sull’incrociatore della Marina Militare Italiana “Durand De La Penne”, alla presenza del Duca Amedeo D’Aosta.

OFFICINE PANERAI DIVENTA PROTAGONISTA DEL MERCATO DELL’ALTA OROLOGERIA Officine Panerai viene acquisita dal Gruppo Richemont (all’epoca Vendôme Group) con la conseguente apertura di una rete selezionata di distributori in Italia; l’anno successivo esordisce nel mercato internazionale dell’alta orologeria.

Composto da ben 1.532 elementi costituisce un'eccezionale opera di ingegneria meccanica. Dall'orologio, con un'autonomia di carica di 40 giorni, dipendono un calendario perpetuo e un elaborato planetario. Grazie a un complesso sistema di ingranaggi, il planetario riproduce in tempo reale, dal punto di vista terrestre, le posizioni esatte delle stelle, del Sole, della Luna e di Giove, attorno al quale orbitano i quattro satelliti scoperti da Galileo.

OFFICINE PANERAI FILES THE RADIOMIR PATENT To meet the military requirements of the Royal Italian Navy, which it has already been supplying instruments for several years, Panerai creates Radiomir, a radium-based powder for making the dials of instruments and weapon sights luminous. Reference to the name “Radiomir” is documented in the supplement to the patent filed in France on 23 March 1916. 1936 JUPITERIUM

Composed of no less than 1.532 elements, the Jupiterium constructed by Officine Panerai is an exceptional work of mechanical engineering. The clock, which has a 40-day power reserve, governs a perpetual calendar and an elaborate planetarium. Through a complex gear train the planetarium shows in real time, as seen from the Earth, the exact positions of the stars, the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter, with the four satellites discovered by Galileo orbiting around it.

THE FIRST RADIOMIR PROTOTYPE On the eve of the Second World War, Panerai creates the first prototypes of the model now known as “Radiomir” for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command of the Royal Italian Navy. Today’s Radiomir retains many of the prototype’s features. The Navy’s historical archives record that just ten prototypes were produced in 1936.

LUMINOR A new self-luminous substance is protected by the patent filed on 11 January 1949 under the “Luminor” trademark. Officine Panerai draws inspiration from its name for its other historical model that follows the Radiomir watch - the Luminor.

1993

THE FIRST OFFICINE PANERAI COLLECTION Officine Panerai presents a collection of three series of limited edition watches to the public: the Luminor, the Luminor Marina and the Mare Nostrum, which draw inspiration from the historical models created for Second World War commandos, and which immediately become highly sought after items for many collectors and enthusiasts. The presentation takes place in September 1993 on the Italian Navy cruiser “Durand De La Penne”, with a ceremony attended by Duke Amedeo D’Aosta.

Florence and its masterpieces have been the source of inspiration for the sophisticated decoration of the Radiomir Firenze 3 Days Acciaio, the Special Edition with a case finely engraved by hand reserved for clients of the historic Boutique. Every one of the 99 examples of this new, exclusive Special Edition has a unique character, this uniqueness lying in the fact that the work is carried out entirely by hand by the master engravers. The combination of the craftsmanship of the case and the watchmaking technology of the movement give this watch a remarkably distinctive identity, Panerai in inspiration and content but decidedly unique from an aesthetic point of view. The engraving flows with pure, appealing lines and, like the inlays which adorn the polychrome marble facades of the Florentine churches, they enhance the elegant geometry of the brushed steel case 47 mm in diameter, covering the caseband and the winding crown. The lines composed by the masterly hands of the engravers form geometric shapes which together create a harmonious design in which details of great symbolic significance stand out, such as the Florentine lily, symbol of the Tuscan capital since the end of the 11th century. Each case requires a week of work on the part of a single engraver, any error he may make will irrevocably damage the work already carried out. On sailing ships in particular, the striking of a bell played an essential part in life on board: it served to rouse the crew in the morning, to summon the sailors for meals and to indicate the end of each watch. But it was also used to warn of danger, to convene an assembly or to indicate the presence of the ship to others when visibility was restricted by fog.
