On June 30, 2015 I was inducted by our L i o n s C l u b s I n te r na t i o na l President, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada of Japan, along with District Governors from around the world to become the District Governor of A711 for 2015-2016, in Honolulu. What a great feeling that was to end a Lions Clubs International Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pat and I had a wonderful time. We arrived in Honolulu on Monday, 22 June 2015 in time for the District Governors School Seminars, which were held at the Hilton Hawaii Village Resort. I had the pleasure of working with 29 other District Governors. The Lions Clubs International Parade was held on Saturday. We attended the MDA Canadian Breakfast at 7:30 am before heading out to march in the parade. It was a very exciting and proud moment in time for all of us walking in the parade saying Aloha to everyone. The plenary sessions had amazing speakers! Tim Shriver is a social leader, educator, activist and business entrepreneur. Tim is the Chairman of Special Olympics and serves over 4 million Special Olympic athletes around the world. He has transformed Special Olympic into a movement that focuses on acceptance, inclusion and respect for individual with intellectual disabilities around the world.

disabilities to be included in our daily lives. Carolyn Miles is President & Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children, an organization that gives children in the United States and around the world, the opportunity to learn, and protection from harm. The global Save the Children movement currently serves over 143 million children in the US and in more than 120 countries. There are 1 billion children in our world who live in poverty. Carolyn advised there are over 2 million children who are presently in danger, living in refugee camps with no place to call home. Carolyn asked our Lions Clubs to help provide dignity to these helpless children, living in poverty. The 98th Lions Clubs International Convention was an exciting, inspiring experience being there with fellow Lions from around the world. It was one of those memorable moments in life. I am looking forward to working with my team of enthusiastic cabinet members who want to serve their District Lions Clubs. Our District Governor’s Team consisting of District Officers, Cabinet Chairs and Past District Governors are here to serve our District A711 Lions Clubs. GOALS: We all need to have goals and to reach out to others and make our communities a better place. Marketing your Lions Club When your Lions Club provides a cheque to a charity, make sure you ask that charity to let others know of your donation to that cause. “Pass it forward” is your goal as a Lions Club. What I’m suggesting to you, is to request your chosen charity to inform the contributor of your Lions Club donation. If not, then the charity will get all the credit and your contribution will not be recognized so request those charities to advertise your Lions Club. I will be looking at a marketing program for our District Lions Clubs through local Colleges using student interns. We can accomplish more by promoting Lions in our communities. Yours in Lionism, Governor Lion Harold Hobson

DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S THEME & PIN Another one of my goals is to inspire Lions and Leos to achieve goals throughout our District of A711 by creating a passion for Lions. Do you remember the reason why you joined Lions? Was it because you wanted to be part of your community or because your friend wanted you to join their club? Perhaps you saw Lions having fun at one of their fund raising events and you wanted to be a part of that fun of raising monies to help a worthy cause. The reason for the theme I have chosen “Heart of a Lion“ is to set your hearts on fire through service to your community. Be proud of

being a Lion and tell others in your community of what your club and other clubs in our District are committed to serving by giving with our hearts. You truly are Lions because you have the Heart of a Lion. I am sure you can remember as you worked on service projects you most likely felt the hairs on the back of your neck standing up, you tingled all over and you got a tear or two in your eyes when people you helped ...said... Thank you Lions! Bring back the passion for serving your community into your life. Find a cause that makes your heart break, then go and dedicate yourself to that cause. The best thing you can do for yourself and others is to give. When you make someone else happy you will be twice as happy by giving. Set your heart on fire with the courage of conviction as a Lion and take the initiative to find your passion of helping your community, your country and the world! Remember,... the worst thing you can do in life... is nothing! Deep inside every one of you, there is the Heart of a Lion!

I would like to invite Club Presidents, Officers, Lions, Leos, and families to our first cabinet meeting being held at the Oakville Canoe Club 150 Water St, Oakville ON. The Oakville Lions will be hosting our meeting and family get together on August 8th from 10am to 3pm. District Cabinet meeting to start at 10 am and lunch is being served at 11:30 /12 noon. Cost is $15 per adult for lunch, please contact Secretary Jim Wilson jimwilson559@gmail.com or myself hobsonschoice@sympatico.ca

PRESIDENTIAL THEME & PIN The Lions Club International President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada theme is “Dignity, Harmony, Humanity”. Peace, hope determination, teamwork and uniting people through service are the Central elements of President Dr. Yamada. President Jitsuhiro Yamada is introducing this year his Children Dignity Initiative to encourage Lions to expand service to children by: 1. Supporting and brightening the outlook of children in hospitals 2. Responding to the needs of children in refugee camps 3. Addressing the needs of hungry children 4. Continuing and expanding the Reading Action Program Harmony: Mutual Understanding through Service In this rapidly changing world, where cultures and people circulate and interact on a daily basis, those people who know how to communicate ISSUE JULY

effectively across cultures, in both personal and professional contexts, will have a crucial advantage over those who do not. Cultural sensitivity requires empathy, curiosity and respect for other people’s opinions and beliefs. Lions clubs can get involved in international cooperation by participating in our Twinning program, a unique understanding of another culture. Interacting with members from different cultures and with different points of view can go a long way in broadening our outlook and provides inspiration for activities in our own community. Humanity- Bringing it all Together If clubs are at the heart of our community service, then LCIF is at the heart of our worldwide service. LCIF grants create goodwill, eliminate human suffering, and restore hope and dignity for people around the world. LCIF programs and partnerships enable us to treat preventable blindness; provide free medical care and medical training for doctors and nurses; teach life skills to school children; and so much more. This year, President Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada, is asking Lions to take every opportunity to support LCIF with your generous donations and Melvin Jones Fellowships. Your support underscores our ability to combine dignity and harmony while serving humanity. Visit http://members.lionsclubs.org/EN/lions/presidents-theme.php

FDI GRADUATE PIN FOR A711 GLT Dear GLT Area Leader Young, As you know, the Faculty Development Institute (FDI) program includes a requirement for post institute action in order for each participant to earn their FDI graduate pin. In an effort to encourage the transfer of their enhanced training skills from the institute classroom to the real world, each participant is required to facilitate a training event in his or her area within six months of completion of the institute. A member of the Global Leadership Team (any level) must be

present at the event to observe the performance of the trainer and to verify that specific training skills, as outlined on the Training Summary Form, were demonstrated. A Training Facilitation Summary is then completed, properly signed and copies are forwarded to the respective District Governor, GLT District Coordinator and the Leadership Division at LCI to confirm completion of this FDI requirement. We are pleased to inform you that GLT Coordinator PRC Lion Dan Sibanda of District A 711, who participated in the Faculty Development Institute in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA on May 31 – June 3, 2015, has successfully completed the post institute training facilitation requirement. In recognition of this accomplishment, we ask that you kindly communicate with local leaders to arrange for a celebratory presentation of the FDI pin to Lion Sibanda. Thank you for providing encouragement and motivation to these new FDI graduates, and thank you for your continued support of quality leadership development! Sincerely, Joshua Friedman,

Fellow Lions, on behalf of our new District Governor Lion Harold Hobson with his theme "Heart of a Lion", I deem it a great honour to serve you as District Administrator & District Governor’s Newsletter Editor for Lionistic Year 2015-2016. WHERE THERE’S A NEED, THERE’S A LION! Please keep us informed of your upcoming Installation Ceremonies and other activities, including Centennial Service Projects so we can publicize your events for other Lions to participate, fellowship, and celebrate your milestones.
