Namaste. Let me first of all congratulate and thank sincerely our past District Executive and PDG Bill WILLCOCKS for an excellent year. In my year as Governor I am looking forward to working with a very dedicated group in our present cabinet. My vision for the year is to reach out and encourage each one of you to take on Leadership roles. You all have something to offer to get where we want to be and that is of great importance to me. I can assure you that we will make use of all the resources that will lead us to our success. It is only through our genuine involvement, dedication and impact that we will have a successful year of service.
My journey as the District Governor started on July 4th when I was inducted along with 742 other district governors from all over the world by the Lions Club International President Naresh AGGARWAL. It was a great feeling when PID Carl YOUNG and his lovely wife Elizabeth pulled the ribbons from our lapels - Pravin’s and mine. During the Convention there were 10 Governors from MDA who jelled together and had a fantastic time. It is a great team of Governors. We had left for Chicago on June the 26th and for the first week we had District Governor School Seminars. I was in a group of 30 other DGES from all over the world. It was a great experience of

learning and sharing about what we all do. In the end I received my graduation Certificate. The spouses had a number of sessions to prepare themselves for their role in the coming year. Asha, our daughter and I also attended the Canadian Breakfast. Asha took Pravin’s place in holding the Canadian Flag during the International Parade as Pravin had to fly back to Oakville that day to receive the Canadian Sesquicentennial Award for her community services. The Parade was exciting. Pravin flew back the same day and we celebrated her Award. During the Plenary sessions we had five very thought provoking and energizing speakers who motivated us immensely for our various causes. Former U.S. Vice-President Al GORE spoke on climate change. Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki MOON stressed the importance of International relations. Helen KELLER’S great grand niece Keller JOHNSON-THOMPSON echoed her great aunt’s plea to be Knights of the Blind. We had the great opportunity to hear Nick VIJICIC, born without arms and legs, and with two deformed feet spread the message of Hope Worldwide. By his own personal example, Nick inspired us to be strong in our minds to overcome the incredible odds so that we can fulfill our potential. We also had an inspirational talk on Art of Priority from a very well known internationally renowned speaker Sister BK SHIVANI. Sister SHIVANI spoke about setting priority skills in motion. We have the ability to see what the most important thing is at the given moment and that thing should be our priority which cannot be lost for a later moment. Besides attending the informative sessions, we also had a lot of fun and entertainment. “Rock the Planet” an amazing performance given by The Beach Boys was an unforgettable entertainment. Our International President’s theme is “We Serve” and Lions Internationally will be focusing on Diabetes, Hunger, Environment, Pediatric Cancer and Sight. Over the next few months you will be hearing a lot about these from the District. Diabetes is a growing concern in Canada and Dr. Mike SARIN – our Diabetes Chair has already started work on this initiative. I am looking forward to working with a very enthusiastic and dedicated team in the cabinet who has Service as their primary goal. Collectively, we will use our strengths and continue to make our District a vibrant group of Lions that WE will be proud of. The Power of We will take us a long way. Yours in Lionism, Surinder SHARMA District Governor, A711
