Namaste. Let me first of all congratulate and thank sincerely our past District Executive and PDG Bill WILLCOCKS for an excellent year. In my year as Governor I am looking forward to working with a very dedicated group in our present cabinet. My vision for the year is to reach out and encourage each one of you to take on Leadership roles. You all have something to offer to get where we want to be and that is of great importance to me. I can assure you that we will make use of all the resources that will lead us to our success. It is only through our genuine involvement, dedication and impact that we will have a successful year of service.
My journey as the District Governor started on July 4th when I was inducted along with 742 other district governors from all over the world by the Lions Club International President Naresh AGGARWAL. It was a great feeling when PID Carl YOUNG and his lovely wife Elizabeth pulled the ribbons from our lapels - Pravin’s and mine. During the Convention there were 10 Governors from MDA who jelled together and had a fantastic time. It is a great team of Governors. We had left for Chicago on June the 26th and for the first week we had District Governor School Seminars. I was in a group of 30 other DGES from all over the world. It was a great experience of

learning and sharing about what we all do. In the end I received my graduation Certificate. The spouses had a number of sessions to prepare themselves for their role in the coming year. Asha, our daughter and I also attended the Canadian Breakfast. Asha took Pravin’s place in holding the Canadian Flag during the International Parade as Pravin had to fly back to Oakville that day to receive the Canadian Sesquicentennial Award for her community services. The Parade was exciting. Pravin flew back the same day and we celebrated her Award. During the Plenary sessions we had five very thought provoking and energizing speakers who motivated us immensely for our various causes. Former U.S. Vice-President Al GORE spoke on climate change. Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki MOON stressed the importance of International relations. Helen KELLER’S great grand niece Keller JOHNSON-THOMPSON echoed her great aunt’s plea to be Knights of the Blind. We had the great opportunity to hear Nick VIJICIC, born without arms and legs, and with two deformed feet spread the message of Hope Worldwide. By his own personal example, Nick inspired us to be strong in our minds to overcome the incredible odds so that we can fulfill our potential. We also had an inspirational talk on Art of Priority from a very well known internationally renowned speaker Sister BK SHIVANI. Sister SHIVANI spoke about setting priority skills in motion. We have the ability to see what the most important thing is at the given moment and that thing should be our priority which cannot be lost for a later moment. Besides attending the informative sessions, we also had a lot of fun and entertainment. “Rock the Planet” an amazing performance given by The Beach Boys was an unforgettable entertainment. Our International President’s theme is “We Serve” and Lions Internationally will be focusing on Diabetes, Hunger, Environment, Pediatric Cancer and Sight. Over the next few months you will be hearing a lot about these from the District. Diabetes is a growing concern in Canada and Dr. Mike SARIN – our Diabetes Chair has already started work on this initiative. I am looking forward to working with a very enthusiastic and dedicated team in the cabinet who has Service as their primary goal. Collectively, we will use our strengths and continue to make our District a vibrant group of Lions that WE will be proud of. The Power of We will take us a long way. Yours in Lionism, Surinder SHARMA District Governor, A711

PID LION DR PATTI HILL FOR INTERNATIONAL 3RD VICE PRESIDENT Lion Dr. Patricia HILL from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was elected to serve a two-year term as a director of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association’s 90th International Convention, held in Chicago, Illinois, USA, July 2-6, 2007. Review Lions Patti's Biography here. For the last several years she has been campaigning towards becoming our next International Third Vice President. She has been on the ballot for the last two years but has strategically dropped off at the last moment. Its time a Canadian was President of our association again. If elected in Milan, in 2019, Lion Patti will be only the third International President of our association since 1917.
Lion Patti Hill for International 3rd VP in Milan
She would follow in the steps of Lions Harry Newman 1924-25 and Judge Brian Stevenson 1987-88. Lion Patti continues to travel the world speaking to Lions globally to become better know. Campaigning takes a lot of work and requires many resources. Please consider supporting the campaign. The committee to elect Lion Patti has made suggestion at her Campaign site on ways clubs and supporters can raise funds for her campaign.
At the Canadian Caucus meeting at the Chicago International Convention a marketing program was suggested that I think many in our District could support. The Committee to Elect Dr. Patti Hill is offering shopping bags at $20 each in support of the campaign. Each bag is 13” x 13” x 5” when filled. Contact 1st VDG Jeffrey Friedman by phone or text at 647-401-2438 to buy one for yourself or a quantity for your club. Many of you may have met her at recent conventions. She attended this last year’s MD’A’ Convention in Kitchener and she has been at our District convention in the past. Your next opportunity to meet her will be at the USA/Canada Leadership Forum in Portland Oregon in September (more on that later). If elected as Third Vice-President at next year’s convention in Milan, Lion Patti will become International 1st Vice President at the International Convention in Montreal in 2021 the Centennial of Lions Clubs in Canada. Help us get her elected. Yours in Lionism, 1st VDG Lion Jeffrey FRIEDMAN
UPCOMING A-711 LIONS DISTRICT CONVENTIONS NOW OPEN FOR BID We have had discussions within our District for years suggesting changes to our annual District Conventions. One recommendation has been to plan conventions more than one year in advance. With a longer view members could have input to improve the convention program, to make it of greater interest and relevance to a broader number of members, their families and the community. Through innovation we can raise interest in participation. Attendees to a current convention could be given the 0pportunity to learn about the program being proposed for the following year and to register in advance for that Convention. Under changes approved in 2015 to our District A-711 Constitution a club, region, zone or, a group of clubs may submit a bid to the District Governor for the right “to organize, conduct, and manage the annual district convention to be held two years after the upcoming district
ISSUE 1 JUL~SEP 2017 PAGE 4 www.a711Lions.org facebook.com/groups/a711lions
convention for a convention site and to manage that convention”. Please start talking now with your club and other clubs to see if you can form a future host committee willing to bid on holding one of our future Conventions. You can consider whether to bid for either the 2018-2019 or the 2019-2020 Convention.
Please contact 1st VDG Lion Jeffrey Friedman for further details before the end of September 2017. A-711: GLOBAL LEADERSHIP PLAN FOR LIONISTIC YEAR 2017-2018 On behalf of the Global Leadership Team (GLT) Team composed of PDG Teddy BOYCE, CS Terrence RICHARDS and me, I would like to thank DG Surinder SHARMA for entrusting to us the Leadership Development of the Lions in our great district. Basing on the observations for the last 6 years, we had a great accomplishment in our district’s Leadership development. To continue this trend, the GLT Team agreed to recommend some more ways on how to realize the goals of DG Surinder SHARMA. We recommend the following: 1.
2.
Zone and Region Chairpersons meetings twice during the year which will be done on both sides of the district separately. The first meetings will be on October 14 and October 15 on the East and West, respectively. The second meetings will be on February 11, 2018 and February 12, 2018 on the West and East, respectively. The venue will be announced later. Orientation for New and Prospective members done separately on both sides of the district. The assistance of the Region/Zone Chairpersons will be asked to find these people. To have an ample time, the tentative month for the first meeting will be in October. Two meetings for the year are recommended but more than twice will be beneficial for our membership drive. ISSUE 1 JUL~SEP 2017 PAGE 30 www.a711Lions.org facebook.com/groups/a711lions
3. 4. 5. 6.
7. 8. 9.
The Club Officers Training will be conducted after the District Convention. The GLT Team recommended to DG Surinder SHARMA on giving DG awards to deserving Zone and Region Chairpersons who have done significant accomplishments in his/her zone /region. Zone & Region Contest Criteria has been formulated to identify these awardees. Please note that all the Zone/Region Chairpersons are encouraged to apply for Lions Clubs International Region and Zone as well. If you have met all the requirements, DG Surinder SHARMA will recommend you for these awards. Periodically, announcements/updates on Leadership will be sent out to the district. The GLT Team is available for presentations upon request of the Zone/Region and clubs. LCI Trainings will be announced to all the Lions of the district including the district officers.
