LIONS FOUNDATION OF CANADA DOG GUIDES & MEMORIAL FOREST We had the pleasure and high emotions when LFC clients were speaking about how their lives changed when they were provided with a Dog Guide. The father Terry of twin girls Brooke and Jade told us about his girls who are both hypoglycemic-unaware, which means the usual markers of low blood sugar- drowsiness, sweating, and shaking, for example- are absent. Since the day the girls were diagnosed at the age of three, parents Terry and Beata slept in two-hour shifts in order to monitor their daughters blood sugar levels through the night. Then came Diabetic Alert Dog, Nettle who changed all that. She was trained to sniff out subtle variations in the twins breath that indicate a drop in blood sugar. When one of the girls experiences a low, Nettle paws at her to wake her up. If they don’t awake, Nettle heads for the parents and alerts them of the problem. Since Nettle came into their home, Terry and Beata have finally been able to sleep through the night, knowing that their girls are in good hands with Dog Guide Nettle. In May, Nettle became the first Dog Guide to win the Service Dog of the Year award and was inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame.

(Above) Governor Lion Harold Hobson and twin girls Brooke and Jade with their award winning Diabetic Alert Guide Dog Nettle Over a June weekend, my wife Pat and I were invited along with other District Governor Elects from across Canada to the Lions Foundation of Canada. The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is located at 152 Wilson St. Oakville, Ontario. LFC mission is to assist Canadians with medical and physical disabilities by providing

them Dog Guides at no cost. They have six different programs: 1. Canine Vision Dog Guides 2. Hearing Ear Dog Guides 3. Service Dog Guides 4. Seizure Response Dog Guides 5. Autism Assistance Dog Guides 6. Diabetic Alert Dog Guides

The girls father Terry said it best “ She has given us peace of mind, and has really made us a believer in the program.” “Nettle means everything to us. We’d sell our house before we’d let her go.” Lions when you get a chance to visit the Lions Foundation of Canada, you will truly be amazed at the wonderful opportunities these programs provide for clients at no cost them. The average cost for a Dog Guide is $25,000, which includes transportation, room and board for the clients while at the training (Continued on page 5)

Lions and Lioness clubs contribute approximately 20% of the Lions Foundation budget each year. The other funding comes from fundraising events, donations from individuals, corporations, service clubs and investment income from endowment funds. The Purina Walk for Dog Guides is the LFC largest fundraising event, which is held in more than 200 communities across Canada.

Your Lions Club sponsorship can be directed to the LFC program of your choice: Hearing Ear Dog Guide Canine Vision Dog Guide Diabetic Alert Dog Guide Service Dog Guide Seizure Response Dog Guide Autism Assistance Dog Guide

We also had a tour of the Breslau, Ontario facility where they breed puppies for the foster care program. It was interesting to discover that they have a Memorial Forest that provides

a unique opportunity to commemorate the life of a loved one. The name of the deceased will be on a plaque and placed at the base of a tree at the annual dedication service. www.dogguides.com/memorial.html Please contact the Lions Foundation of Canada for further information about their amazing programs and be sure to arrange a visitation by your Lions Club.
