and Service Activities. Lion Mike Sarin is doing a great service in making our Lions and communities aware of Diabetes. Our GLT and GMT teams have put on several in-services meetings and the response has been very favorable. We are not only growing our numbers, but have also started another new club. There is also a possibility of starting two more clubs. We lost two clubs but the Governors’ team is working hard to revive Hamilton East. We have also revived our University Of Toronto campus club. At the time of printing our Newsletter, we are actually in the plus numbers this year. Our Global Action Team has been hard at work with a great focus on service activities and projects. The team is putting a lot of emphasis in the areas of better recognition of the Lions clubs, their objectives and gaining potential new members.

Namaste I believe we are on the right path regarding our commitment of serving our communities and making a difference in their lives. Our clubs are very much involved and the “Power of We” is highly visible. Over the last two months, we have noticed that the clubs have been very active and involved in a number of community service projects. The projects included a lot of fun in such activities as Halloween parties, Christmas Parades and multiple projects with and for the Youth and the Seniors, In my visitations to the clubs I have made the clubs aware of the “Power of Action” and how important it is at the club level for Leadership, Membership

Here, a mention must also be made about our dedicated Convention Committee for 2018. They are tirelessly working hard towards an exciting program for the whole weekend. Thank you for contributing collectively to Serve and Support the “Power of We” and thereby enriching the lives of those who are either less fortunate or are left behind in the communities they live in. I have just concluded revision of a quote about the MyLion App that will appear in an article by Madeleine Miller Communications Specialist at LCI for the January issue of the Lions Magazine. We should all try to promote use of this App. “There are significant benefits to using MyLion,” stressed Jeffrey Friedman, 1st Vice District Governor of District A-711 and member of the Mississauga Central Lions Club in Ontario, Canada. “You can follow clubs and individuals anywhere in the world and see what activities they’re doing. You can also follow any club’s projects and communicate with the originator through the app to learn about their project and share ideas. My favorite is finding people who are doing the projects
that may fit the challenges I find in my District, as that give me ideas to adapt here attracting members of my community to assist in Service, the more momentum we gain with the general public in service, the more members we will gain. This provides us with more opportunities to show and tell what Lions do. DUNDAS LC ~ LION VISH BAGAL “A LIONS STORY” where he remained until 1984. In 1984 he was hired by the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital in social work services. He retired from the position as Chief of Social Work Services in 1997. Vish continued his membership as a Lion while living in Fort Francis and Brockville and Hamilton. He retired from the position as Chief of Social Work Services in 1997 and transferred to the Dundas Lions Club as he also moved to Dundas where he resides today. The family purchased a property in Hamilton which was converted into a home and 12 unit retirement facility in 1987. The business was in the family until 2006 when Vish sold it to move on to other ventures. His beloved wife Sulheka passed away in 2002 and Vish decided to start a school in India in her memory. Lion Vish Bagal was born and raised in Kolhapur India (1934). He received his education locally and graduated from university at age 22 in 1956. After graduation he worked in a private business in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) until 1966. He married the love of his life (Sulheka) an inspiration in his life and career in 1962 and they had two children, a boy and girl. In 1966 the family moved to Britain where Vish attended the London School of Economics, earning a Master’s Degree in Personnel Management in 1968. After graduation he worked in child guidance services until 1975. While in Britain Vish joined his first Lions club in 1974. In 1975 Vish was a successful candidate for a job in Canada at the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario. His position involved work as a senior social worker in children’s services in Fort Francis, Ontario. In 2011 he rented a facility and started up a school geared to pre public school children. Unfortunately the owner of the property cancelled the rental agreement and Vish then purchased a property which is both his winter home and school. The property adjoins a public park and has been upgraded to include three classrooms and a building for the resident caretaker he employs year round. At inception the school had 30 students and the cost is $4.00 per month for the children ages two and a half to six years of age. They receive a free uniform and have access to audio /visual equipment in the classrooms which have a teacher and teacher assistant, all costs borne by Vish. At present there are three classes, 1(40 children ages two and half in nursery class), 2(30 children in junior kindergarten) & 3(30 children in senior kindergarten). The curriculum is 75% English and 25% regional Indian language. The goal of the school is to provide students with an opportunity to have a good start in life in a caring and understanding environment. The children are taught
to develop independent thinking skills, problem solving abilities to prepare them for the regular school they will attend after age 6. All costs are kept low and all expenses, teacher s' sal aries, assistants, caretaker etc. are looked after by Vish. No public or local funding is received for the operation of the school. Lion Vish’s son is a recently retired Major who was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. His daughter is employed with the City of Hamilton and both are fully behind their father’s venture in India. The caretaker at the school has been provided with living quarters on site and her son also helps out on occasion. Lion Vish financed the education of the caretaker’s son through University and he is now an accredited civil engineer. Lion Vish Bagal has demonstrated by his actions that he truly understands the meaning of the Lions motto “WE SERVE”. He has not sought attention or reward for his self-less actions to help those less fortunate who otherwise would not have had much of a chance at a decent life. After interviewing Vish, I was compelled to tell his story and hope others get a better understanding of his dedication to Lionism and how we can all do our part to make the community we call home a better place to live. I also wish to congratulate Vish’s grand daughter Sarah Cameron who was the successful recipient of the Dundas Lions Club initial Spirit Award given to the graduating high school stu dent demonstra ting outstanding community spirit and volunteerism.
