Enjoyable evening with the Freelton Lions club who acting pr e si d e nt L i on B o b La n kt r e e organized this evening along with Jim Cook, Terry Cook and Sally McMann. Dundas Lion Rick Mallon was the MC for the evening. On May 24th I had the pleasure and honor to visit the York Lions Club and present to Lion Mike Stacey a Progressive Melvin Jones award pin on behalf of District A711. This award was a tribute to Lion Mike Stacey who has kept the Lions York Steel Band together for over 40 years. It is amazing the places this Lions York Steel Band has travelled around the world! These youth are taught how to play the steel drums that provide musical enjoyment for spectators in parades.

A-711:DISTRICT LIONS MARKETING PLAN This past Lions year, I have been asking Lion Clubs to come up with a plan to promote Lions in your communities. As Lions we are the best kept secret in all of Canada. When you ask people if they heard of Lions, nine out of ten will say no. Why is that? Well it is mainly because Lions don’t market themselves as Lions. The next time someone asks you about Lions, give them a one minute elevator speech about how your Lions Club is serving the community. Tell them about how your Lions Club raises funds to donate back to your community, disaster relief in other parts of Canada and the world. Another way of promoting your Lions Club is to get free advertising through local newspapers by submitting to the community events section. Local radio and TV stations will air your event. All you have to do is….. just ask. Also use the community newspaper SNAPD. They will send a photographer/reporter to your event and its free. Here are the local offices in your area that you can call to promote your event. Contact them on line and set up an account to promote your event.

A711 DISTRICT GOVERNOR LION HAROLD HOBSON VOLUME XV, ISSUE 11 MAY 2016 The Waterdown Lions Club have been working on a marketing plan that will provide sponsorships to local businesses on an annual basis. This will be a great opportunity for local businesses to promote Lions in the community. There are innovative Lions Clubs in our District of A711 that promote businesses who sponsor a Lions event. This is a great way of raising funds by placing a banner or sign at your event with the name and address of the local business sponsor. If you get a half dozen or more sponsors you are helping them advertise their business as well as Lions. Ask that business sponsor if you can advertise your event in their store window. It becomes a win-win situation for everyone. At our District Convention our promotional advertising chair Lion Glen Samuels found a couple of sponsors for the convention and provided a banner advertising the dealership. Claudia Ewan of Leggat Chev, Buick, GMC dealership provided a car and driver to pick up and take back our International guests at the airport. We greatly appreciate the Leggat dealership as our Gold Sponsor for providing a donation cheque, driver, car as well as prizes at our convention. Claudia Ewan and Leggat dealership were fantastic sponsors. Another way of promoting Lions is through partnerships. Our Region 34 Chair Yves Drouin took up the challenge and asked his paint supplier Sherwyn Williams if they would provide a discount for Lion members in our district. They not only agreed but they would even provide a discount across Canada. A Lion member would have to show their membership card to receive a 25% discount on paint and 10% discount on equipment. What a great way to promote Lions through a partnership with local businesses! Lion Yves Drouin will be providing more information on this program in the near future. Lion Clubs need to have a public relations chair that will take advantage of all the opportunities that are available to promote their club. Look for the free advertising utilizing partnerships with businesses. If you don’t ask you will never know what your club is missing out on sponsorships. Promote Lions by wearing your pin and or vest, be proud of being a Lion. The Centennial Service Challenge from Lions Clubs International to serve 100 million people by July 2018 maybe changed to 200 million people. So far the count for serving in the following areas below are now at 90,045,786. We will easily serve 100,000 million people this year. Your club can make a difference in your community and contribute towards the goal by participating in the four Centennial Service Challenge Campaigns. You decide when to serve and which projects are right for your club and community. Engaging our Youth Support youth in your community, or inspire the next generation of volunteers by inviting Leos and other local youth to serve on a project.
Sharing the Vision Prevent future cases of unnecessary blindness through vision screenings and educational events. Give the gift of sight through projects that benefit those who are blind or living with low vision.
Relieving the Hunger Improve access to healthy food for vulnerable populations in your community.
Protecting our Environment Protect and improve the environment to make your community a healthier place to live for everyone.
GET RECOGNIZED and leave your legacy.

CLUB:GEORGETOWN LC DONATES OVER $30,000 The Georgetown Lions Club had their annual Golf Tournament on June 13 th and the Huttonville Lions Club had a foursome, consisting of Lions Barry Moore, Sherry Hunt, Brian Batstone and District Governor Harold Hobson. Our foursome didn’t win any major prizes but we had a fun day of golf. The Purina Walk for Dog Guides on May 31 by the Georgetown Lions raised over $20,000 for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.
Lions Bruce Cornish and PDG Fred Zorge are holding up the donation cheque and the group from the LFC Dog guides were on hand. Georgetown Lions Al Watt and Louie Violo on the far left looking on. Lion Fred Zorge who turned 90 was in the walk and raised quite a lot of money for LFC.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS ONTARIO
Our District Chair Mary Lou Pollock has asked Lion Gary MacDonald to be on her special Olympics committee to help raise awareness and funding for Special Olympic athletes. Lion Mary Lou and committee will be organizing fund raising events in the near future. The date will be February 11th at the Century Gardens in Brampton. I want to thank the Lion Clubs who have donated funds for these amazing athletes. Our District of A711 sponsored a special Olympic athlete recently at the Guelph Spring Games. When I attended the Multiple District “A” Convention in North Bay the council chair elect Stewart Patterson ask me if I would take on the portfolio as MD ”A” Special Olympics Chair” and I said emphatically, yes! What a great opportunity to bring awareness of Special Olympics to all the 10 Districts of MD”A” in Ontario and southern Quebec. I’m looking forward to this new position and thank council chair elect Stew Patterson for this MD”A” chair portfolio.
YOUTH EXCHANGE CAMP
Region Chair Sandy Judhan is getting prepared for the youth camp exchange students coming from abroad. On June 25 th 20 youths will be coming to Toronto airport from around the world and will stay with host families for 2 weeks and then go to the District A-2 camp for another 2 weeks. Our District is hosting 4 youth exchange students. What a wonderful opportunity it is for these youths to get a taste of Canada and enjoy the hospitality of Lionism. We have had only a handful of Lions Clubs in our District who have supported our youth exchange program and we are greatly thankful. As for the Lions Clubs who are still on the sidelines, I ask that your Lions Club please step forward and donate funds for our youth exchange program. Please send your cheque to District Treasurer Wayne Hoey at 35 Eastborne Cresent, Toronto, ON M8V 1W7 Thank you for your support in Lionism District Governor Lion Harold Hobson
THANK YOU LIONS!
My year as District Governor of A711 has been an unbelievable experience that I hold deep in my heart. It was just an amazing year of enjoyable fond memories, meeting Lions, Leos and Lionesses from across our District who provide such humble service to their communities. The untold volunteer hours that Lions, Leos and Lionesses provide to raise funds and help people in need is truly awesome. I thank you all for your warm, friendly hospitality and have enjoyed your company. Your communities can truly say… where there is a need… there is a Heart of a Lion! District A711 Youth Exchange and Camp Program 2015-2016 District A711 Youth Exchange and Camp Program 2015-2016 will be hosting four (4) Incoming Youths aged 16 to 22. This Program needs approximately four thousand dollars ($4,000.00) to cover the cost of these Youths that we are currently processing. Arrival date: Host period 1: Camp: Host period 2: Departure:
June 25th 2016 June 25th to July 12th 2016 (17 days) July 12th to July 21st 2016 (10 days) Camp Wetaskiwin (Thorold, St Catherine, ON) July 21st to July 23rd 2016 (3 days) July 23rd 2016
Clubs or members can lend support by sponsoring lunches or dinners for one Youth or for all four Youths. This will help to alleviate some of the financial responsibilities from the Host Families. The Hosted portion and the Camp portion of this program have scheduled activities which will be implemented by our Lions Councillors. The Youth Exchange and Camp Program is an amazing experience for the young people. They have an opportunity to visit our beautiful country and experience our diverse cultures and traditions. They are able to engage with young people from other countries in an entirely different setting. They learn about the Spirit of Lionism, which they take back to their homeland. “We learnt to think not about the world but with the world”, quote from one of the Exchange Youth from last year’s program. Other activities will include visit to CN Tower, Niagara Falls, ziplining, jet boat cruise, Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, and Team building activities.
