GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE September 28, 2015 The US/Canada Forum was in Grand Rapids, Michigan this year and I took the opportunity of attending this great leadership forum. It’s amazing the amount of information you get from other Lions that attend this event. There were just under 2000 Lions in attendance and our Multiple District “A”, of which our District of A711 is part of, won an award for best in attendance! MDA Council Chair John Johnson accepted the award. Next year the US/Canada Forum will be in Omaha, Nebraska, September 15-17, 2016.

DG Harold Hobson & Lions International President Dr. Yamada There were 115 seminars to choose from Thursday to Saturday covering Lions programs to meeting the International President and directors. One of the seminars I truly enjoyed was community service builds clubs. Get your friends and neighbours to help your club in

community service projects. As Lions we are not about writing cheques. Facilitator Lion Gary Wong put it in simple math terms; Friends + Community Service = new members and community service is the heart of what we do. Try using the Lions Club Community Needs Assessment to start a new community service project and be part of the Centennial Challenge of serving 100 million people worldwide.

DG Harold Hobson leading the floats in the CNE parade The Lions CNE PEEWEE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT was exciting this year, especially being on the other side of CNE grounds near the Princess Gates. I had the opportunity of attending the opening ceremonies for the CNE and working at the snack bar. In order to flip burgers we had to take a 2 hour food course at the CNE conduct by Toronto Health Department. Lion Yves Drouin is this year’s chair of the event and recruiting volunteers worked out great, thanks to all Lions who served. The CNE had a Lions Mardi Gras parade on September 2 and we drove through the midway on floats throwing out necklace beads to crowds that gathered. It was a lot of fun and enjoyment seeing all the smiling faces in the crowd. The month of September was a very exciting and busy month for everyone and looking forward to an uplifting October for membership growth in District of A711. District Governor Lion Harold Hobson

EDUCATION FOR ALL: SCHOOLS FOR CHILDREN-QUITO LIONS PROJECT The Toronto Beaches Lions Club has agreed to support this project and suggested that Lions might better serve them with this project by combining efforts with as many clubs as possible throughout the District.

detailed application process. Please contact me for further information. Email: cjmccague@sympatico.ca Cell: 416-845-2363

In the meantime we were very fortunate to Thank you, have an opportunity for one of the founders Doug Allen, past President of Schools for Lion Carol McCague Children of the World as well as Don Pocock, Director, present at our last District Meeting. The Quito Project was voted on and approved to proceed with the next steps to involve other clubs in the District to partner with this Project. Regarding the application to LCIF for a Standard Grant – receipt at LCIF must be 60 Days prior to LCIF's March review meeting date (January). A Minimum of 2 clubs must have Hello Lions of District A-711 committed to participate in the project in order to apply. A Club In the project District must We have been presented with an exciting also play a part. If approved we will then have International Project Opportunity to Partner 6 months thereafter to match the Granted with Schools for Children of The World, Funds. Canada. www.scwcanada.org The application process is time sensitive and Don Pocock, a Director with Schools for therefore would appreciate knowing which Children of the World, Canada and a few other clubs are interested in partnering with Toronto representatives presented at my club in late Beaches Lions club in this International April. They are a volunteer organization that Project so that we may proceed with the has been building schools in poor areas of Honduras, Haiti and Ecuador for the past 10 years. The specific reason we were contacted is because they have become aware of a one room school in Quito, Ecuador which was built by the Lion's Club in that area. This school is inadequate now because of population growth and another classroom is badly needed. The Lion's Club down there has no money to make this happen. SCWC do. They also have the expertise as they are a group of engineers and architects. All of their projects involve a partnership. Sometimes it is a religious group. Other times it is the Government or a School Board. Sometimes an individual donor partners with them. In the Quito case, they would like to partner with Lions Clubs in the Toronto and surrounding area. You will see in the attached Presentation, SCWC will fund half of the project amount and will look to Lions Clubs as partners to fund half. This project will allow an additional 300 students to attend the school. Our plan is to apply to Lions Clubs International for a Standard Grant for half of the amount that we will be required to raise (about $17,500). LIONS UNIVERSITY - EMPOWERING COMMUNITY SERVICE LEADERS Fellow Lions, I know a lot of you have always wanted to further your Lions knowledge through attending seminars and institutes of one form or another. For many of you, the costs involved and scheduling conflicts have made it hard for you to attend these seminars and institutes. A neat solution to all that is now on offer. LCI, through the USA/ Canada Lions Leadership Forum has set up the Lions University. You have the opportunity to do all the courses you have ever wanted to do for your professional and personal development and get recognized for it! You do the courses in the comfort of your own home at your own chosen time. To cap it all, its absolutely free!! The Lions University is built upon three progressive levels:  Bachelor’s Program to successfully lead Lions Clubs

 

Master’s Program to successfully take on leadership roles at the District level Doctorate Program to help develop facilitators and trainers for adult learning.

All of the work we do as Lions starts at the Club level. Even if you have been a Club, District, or International officer, you are a member of a Lions Club first. Therefore, our role in supporting the success of our own Lions Club is ongoing. For more information please follow this link: www.lionsuniversity.org The first group of graduates were capped last week at this year's Leadership Forum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our own Lion PRC Terrence Richards was one of the graduates! In fact, there were probably more A711 Lions graduating and I just didn't see them because of the large crowds.
