GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

H O B S O N

Happy New Year Lions, all the best in 2016 As Canadians we are coming up to a number of momentous occasions in our Centennial Year in Lionism the year 2017. First of all we have the Canada celebrating 150th anniversary as of July 1, 2017 and the Toronto Maple Leafs c e l e b r a t i ng their 100 th Anniversary as a hockey club.

Canada’s 150th Birthday on July 1, 2017 All of Canada will be celebrating 150th anniversary come July 1, 2017. The logo is consists of a series of diamonds,, arranged in the shape of the maple leaf. The four diamonds at the base represent the four original provinces that formed in the 1867 Confederation: Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The other diamonds extend out from the base to create nine points, which represents the 13 provinces and territories. The Canada 150 logo will become an evocative symbol and an enduring reminder of one of Canada’s proudest moments. The maple leaf motif is recognized at home and abroad as distinctively Canadian, and it fosters feelings of pride, unity and celebration. This unique and colourful design is simple enough to be drawn by children, and versatile enough to appear in color variations. The possible uses of the symbol are as unlimited as the spirit and imagination of the Canadian public. The designer for the logo was chosen from 300 eligible Canadian students entries and the winner from this nationwide competition was Ariana Cuvin of Toronto, Ontario. Our Lions Clubs International celebrates 100 years of community worldwide service in 2017! A number of our District A711 Lions Clubs are taking up the Centennial Service Challenge and your club can earn a Centennial Banner Patch with a special gemstone design each year you support our Centennial Service Challenge campaigns to impact Youth, Vision, Hunger and the Environment. Your club can earn up to four Centennial Banner Patches by participating in each year of the Centennial Service Challenge. Qualifying donations to Lions Clubs International Foundation will also count toward your Centennial Banner Patch. All Centennial service activities must be reported through MyLCI's Service Activity Report to receive credit. Districts can also earn Centennial Banner Patches based on the participation of their clubs. District Governor Lion Harold HOBSON

CLUB VISITS: STONEY CREEK LC, TORONTO KAITEUR LC It is amazing the things you learn about Lions Clubs when you visit them. Looking at a charter on a wall in the back storage room of the Stoney Creek Lions Club there is this Lions Club International Charter for the Saltfleet Lions Club, March 6, 1961. Somewhere along in time the name was changed to the Stoney Creek Lions. Club President Alan Lennox, PRC Stan Eastman, Secretary Christine Eastman were awarded the Centennial Service Challenge banner patch with 4 diamonds for outstanding service to the community. All clubs should be taking up the Centennial Service Challenge by providing community service for Youth, Hunger, Vision and Environment. Go to MYLCI on the Lions Clubs International website and have your club secretary enter the activities of your club to earn a gemstone banner patch for the Centennial Service Challenge!

(Above) Centennial Service Banner Patch presented to President Lion Alan LENNOX of Stoney Creek Lions Club by Governor Lion Harold HOBSON (Below) The Toronto Kaiteur Lions Club President Lion Martin BOWEN presented me with their banner of PDG Lion A.P. SSUKHAI who is still a Lion member and I presented to the Toronto Kaiteur Lions Club an appreciation certificate for their generous donation to the Lions CNE Peewee Baseball Tournament as well as time working at the snack bar. Congratulations to the Toronto Kaiteur Lions Club for coming up to your 25th anniversary in December 2016. CLUB VISIT: FREELTON LC I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Freelton Lions Club and inducting a new Lion member Josh PIPPY. It was a proud moment for sponsor Lion Peter KACHUIK and acting President PRC Lion Bob LANKTREE presenting the new Lion membership kit and Lion’s pin. Also I presented the Centennial Service Challenge banner patch of 3 gemstones for the Freelton Lions helping to serve their community with programs geared to youth, vision, hunger and environment. Lion Secretary Theresa COOK was complimented on her reporting of her Lions Club activities through the Lions Clubs International MYLCI website, for the Freelton Lions to be award the banner patch.

They were joined by then District Governor Elect Lion Harold HOBSON. After a delicious meal, Club President Lion Sally McMANN introduced DGE Harold and gave a history of Lion Ken HENDERSON’s many contributions to the advancement of the Freelton Lions Club’s projects and its visibility and recognition in the community. Lion Ken has chaired Freelton Lions major current project, the planning and construction of a community ice pad and associated facilities building. DGE Harold presented Lion Ken with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award plaque and pin, on behalf of the Freelton Lions Club. Freelton Lions will be celebrating 30 years of service to the community next April, and are looking forward to many more years of the same.

FREELTON LC: GROUNDBREAKING FOR FREELTON ICE PAD Freelton Lions Club has worked with the City of Hamilton and their Parks and Recreation Department since September 2010 to plan and design an ice pad for the community, combined with a multi-function building housing washrooms, a snack bar, and a room which can be used for multiple purposes and events, as well as a room for storage of maintenance equipment. Charter Member of the Freelton Lions Club, Lion Frank Jamieson, has worked for many years making and maintaining a temporary ice pad every year for the local children. The official Ice Pad Ground Breaking was held on December 18th, and Lion Frank was selected to do the honours. A representative of the Mayor attended, along with local Councillor Robert Pasuta, the project chair Lion Ken Henderson, representatives of Hamilton Parks and Recreation, and about 35 people consisting of Freelton Lions and local residents with children who are looking forward to using this facility. Preliminary work is being started so that construction of the building can go on over the winter. The concrete will be poured and the project continued when the weather warms up. As the Freelton Lions are still fundraising, there has not been a set contribution amount determined yet, but the ice pad is scheduled to be ready for skating December 2016. The town of Freelton and the Lions Club are looking forward to planning many community events here.

CLUB VISIT: BLACKHEATH-BINBROOK LC The Blackheath Binbrook Lions Club is not easy to find with my GPS but with perseverance and guidance from my navigator that evening Lion Gary MacDONALD we arrived on time. This Lions Club is located at the far west side of our District in Caledonia Ontario, just north of Hamiltn. We were more than welcomed by Lion President Doug BOWERMAN and Lions at this meeting. The Blackheath Binbrook Lions club is the home of PDG Lion Lyle BRENZIL 1993-94. It was a pleasure meeting this community minded Lions and having a fun dinner meeting. Lion President Doug was presenting a donation cheque to a women shelter. DG Lion Harold HOBSON.

DISTRICT A-711: NEW MEMBERS ORIENTATION TRAINING

What an awesome new member orientation training session conducted by GLT Coordinator PRC Lion Dan SIBANDA and District Administrator PRC Lion Terrence RICHARDS. It was very exciting to meet new Lion members, prospective new members and Lions who wanted to know more about Lionism. We need more new member orientation meetings across our District of A711. I have asked Lion Dan SIBANDA Lion Terrence RICHARDS to record these meetings on tape for future club use. Thank you goes out to RC Lion Eric WEN who provided the meeting room from the Mississauga Chinese Association. We learn from one another!

MDA: SPECIAL OLYPICS ONTARIO Fellow Lions when I went to the MDA Convention last year in Kingston, Ontario, I was inspired by our International guest International Director Larry Dicus. Lion Larry talked about Special Olympics and provided information about this program. When I went to Honolulu Hawaii for my induction ceremony as District Governor, they had guest speaker Tim Shriver talking about Special Olympics. Tim Shriver again inspired me a great deal with his regards to people focusing on acceptance, inclusion and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities around the world. In my year as governor I would like to have Lions in our District get inspired by this wonderful program of Special Olympics and find ways that you as a Lion and Lion Club can leave a legacy of serving your community.

THANK YOU LETTER FROM A STUDENT VOLUNTEER: FAADHIL AHAMAT HELLO LIONS Wanted to share this very lovely letter from Faadhil Ahamat, student and volunteer - Don Mills Collegiate, TDSB. Dear Raija Rosenthal, Thank you very much for the holiday wishes and the lovely card. I haven't spoken to you in a long while. Things have been really hectic for me with the end of school approaching and post secondary plans to be made. Anyways, most of that hardship is over. I chose to pursue my interest in aviation and my desire to become a pilot. I'm finally taking flying lessons and attending aviation theory classes in order to receive my private pilot's license. However, all this success wouldn't have been possible without your help Raija. First and foremost, I had the best of experiences from my time volunteering with you in the Be a Donor mission, attending the Lion's gatherings, and all the personal events. I also very much appreciate the time and effort you put into my post secondary research. I think I still have that envelope filled with all the information stored in my file drawer. All these experiences have been very educational and entertaining. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to have those experiences again. I'm feeling the increased difficulty of post secondary institutions and the heavy workloads. However, since we've always thought of you as a member of our family, my sister had insisted on carrying on the torch. She has recently begun the second year of high school and she is looking for volunteering opportunities. She figured that if she will spend time volunteering, it might as well be for a cause and person she truly appreciates and admires. She knows of what work I do when I spend time volunteering with you and she would love to support the cause. If there is any way that you could take her in, she would really appreciate it. Thank you again Raija. I hope you had a lovely Christmas with your family and continue to enjoy the rest of the holiday leading up to the New Year. Lots of Love, Faadhil Ahamat and family.

(Editors note: PDG Lion Raija Rosenthal is the Trillium Gift of Life/BeADonor District Chairperson)
