GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE
Thank you for joining in the District A711 Convention celebrations at the Holiday Inn Toronto International Airport. It has been an exciting climax to a marvelous year in Lionism. I want to thank our District Convention Committee for their dedication and hard work to provide us with an awesome convention this year. This committee has done an excellent job of giving the Lions of District A711 an enjoyable, entertaining, learning, fellowship and above all a fun time. I want to thank our District Convention Chair PDG Peter HAMMOND for all his hard work and leadership in organizing th is fantastic convention. Thank you PDG Lion Peter! I had set out a few goals for my year as District Governor and the main one was to inspire Lions, Leos and Lionesses by creating a passion in serving their community. That passion is getting out into your communities and working with people who need your help. Another goal was to provide a Lions Marketing Strategy that will provide membership growth to serve our communities. As Governor I would like to plan for our future in Lionism by creating a marketing strategy in order to raise awareness of Lionism. We need to think

outside the box, finding creative ways to market ourselves. The Waterdown Lions Club proposed one marketing plan for business sponsorship and their now working on fine tuning it. We need to get pa rtn e rsh i ps w ith oth e r organizations that will help us promote lionism in our communities. Region Chair Yves DROUIN took up the challenge and asked his paint supplier Sherwyn Williams if they would provide a discount for Lions members in our district. They said “yes we will”, not only in our district but in the whole country of Canada. As a Lion member, show your membership card at a Sherwyn Williams store and get 25% off paint and 10% off equipment. Thank you Lion Yves for that great partnership. We need more partnerships like that to build our membership. Special Olympics and Lions Clubs International has a partnership for the Opening Eyes Program. This is a vision and eye health screening in partnership, led by volunteer vision care professionals. Opening Eyes offer prescription eyewear, sunglasses and sports goggles to Special Olympics athletes. As Governor I’m looking forward to our District Lions Clubs getting involved with Special Olympics Ontario. This is a great opportunity for Lions to focus on acceptance, inclusion and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities and special needs. Another goal was forming two new Lions Clubs in our district and we finally accomplished that goal by the end of February with the help of a number of Lions. I want to thank GMT-D coordinator Rolando dela CRUZ, RC Sandy HEERALAL-JUDHAN, and Lion Aim MUJIB for organizing these two clubs; The Greater Toronto Area Lions Club and the Toronto Central Bangladesh Lions Club. Also thank you to the new club sponsors, The Toronto Netralya Lions and the Malvern Onyx

Lions Club. A great big heartfelt thanks to all my Cabinet Officers and Cabinet Chairs for your support and hard work of serving the Lions of our district. Becoming governor was not an easy task and I would not have reached my goal without the support of my Huttonville Lions Club. Thank you Huttonville Lions for your many years of support and especially this past year. There is a friend who supported me for many years and without her support, I would be lost. My dear wife Pat thank you with all my heart. I would like to thank our special International Guests from the state of Nebraska for joining us this weekend to celebrate at our convention. Past International Director Rick MYERS and Lion wife Marsha were marvelous guests. Also I must thank our Protocol Aid PDG Lion Russ FEDUN and his wife Sue for taking great care of our guests. Its quite ironic that PID Rick MYERS and PDG Russ FEDUN became District Governor’s the same year’s 1990/91 in St Louis U.S.A. and not to mention that I was President of my Lions Club of Huttonville in the same year 1990/91. The planets must have aligned, to bring us all together for this awesome convention. My governor’s theme this year is “Heart of a Lion” and it goes hand in hand with our International President’s theme Dignity, Harmony and Humanity. We serve our communities by bringing our passion with all our “Hearts of a Lion” to bring “Dignity” to children in need, “Harmony” of communication across all cultures and Humanity of Lions Clubs are the heart of our community service. Your community can truly say…….. where there is need………..there is a “Heart of a Lion!” Thank you DG Harold HOBSON

JACK GRAYDON HOME FOR DEAF, LCI AWARD & LIFE MEMBERSHIP Jack GRAYDON has served as Multiple District Chair for Homes for the Deaf for over 40 years. Lion Jack is a member of the Oakville Lions Club. Lion Jack was very surprized when Past International Director (PID) Carl YOUNG and Council Chair John JOHNSTON presented him the Lions International Award at our Saturday Luncheon. Also Lion Jack received a life membership award in Multiple District “A” (MDA). Another Lions Home for the Deaf is being built in Ottawa and will be named the JACK GRAYDON CENTRE.

LEO AWARDS At the Saturday Leo Luncheon I had the great pleasure of surprising the Leo’s in attendance with Leo Awards. These awards were given to Anthony VANI who is the president of the Kleinburg Omega Leo club; Maddelena VANI the Charter President of the Kleinburg Omega Leo Club and Emma MOGUS who is the president of the Oakville Leo club. These young Leos are truly amazing volunteers in the communities and must be recognized for their dedication and leadership in their clubs and district.

LIONS INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD There were two exceptional people in our District of A711 who deserved this highest award by the International President, Dr. Jitsuhiro YAMADA for outstanding service. I had the pleasure to present Leo Maddelena VANI her award at the Saturday Leo Luncheon. In my recommendation for this award I had to complete a form to PID Carl YOUNG who submitted to the International President for approval. Leo Maddelena VANI is an extraordinary young lady who is the charter president of her Kleinburg Omega Leo club. Leo Maddalena has provided many community service projects, for seniors and recently a fund raising event for a little boy with cerebral palsy who needs an operation in order that he can walk. Maddalena is also the recipient of the 2014 National Congress of Italian Canadians Youth Achievement Award. Also a graduate from York University and completed a BA Honours ( Double Major) in classical studies and European studies. Currently she is completing her MA in European, Russian, and Eurasian studies at the Munk school of Global Affairs, University of Toronto. Maddalena is also a reseach analyst and junior research fellow alumni at the NATO Council of Canada, and Academic Events officer at Model NATO Youth summit 2014. The second International Leadership Award, I had the pleasure to present it with our PID Rick MYERS at the Saturday evening banquet. Again the award had the final approval of our International President Dr. YAMADA and the award went to GLT Coordinator Dan SIBANDA. Lion Dan SIBANDA has shown great leadership abilities in our district of A711 Lions by taking on the position of Global Leadership Team District Coordinator. Recently he has conducted a new member orientation workshop for the east end of our district and is planning another one for the west half in January 2016. The workshop was a great success for recruiting new prospective members. Also he had taken the facilitator training in Chicago last year to continue to provide further training to other Lions. Lion Dan SIBANDA is a true leader in District A711.
