StephenFoz Foz has been on the radio in Suffolk for well over 40 years. His on air activities began at Hospital Radio Ipswich in 1977. During his five year spell there he began working at Radio Orwell and when Saxon Radio came on air in 1982 Foz secured a full time job working for both stations. The BBC came calling in 1990 and he’s been at BBC Radio Suffolk ever since.

You know you’re getting on in years when police officers, sports men and women and office staff look so young. Another indicator is when you’re ignored by those handing out leaflets for night clubs and trendy gyms. It’s also the case that the older you get, the quicker the time seems to go. With the latter in mind I cannot believe StowBlues has already come round again. The annual celebration of the blues takes place at the Museum Of East Anglia Life in Stowmarket on Saturday, June 8 and once again it’s been my great pleasure to co-curate the line-up with Mike Rushmore. Due to family commitments Mike cannot perform at this year’s event so for the first time in living memory there’ll be no set by Back Porch. Do not fret though, there remains eight hours’ worth of excellent live music with several acts making their StowBlues debut. Doors open at 1pm with harmonica man Giles King’s outfit Goofa Dust getting proceedings underway at 2pm. They are celebrating the release of a

Mark Harrison

fine album which features covers and originals. I’m pretty sure tracks from the CD will be feature heavily in their 45 minute set. They’ll be followed at 3pm by the country bluesman Mark Harrison who earlier in the year guested on the Cerys Matthews blues show on BBC Radio 2. It was at around the same time Mark appeared at the Duke Of York in Ipswich where he went down an absolute storm. Another act to have graced Mike Rushmore’s Midweek Blues In Town venture at The Duke will follow Mark at 4pm. Ben Joseph and the Lay-Lows have a unique take on the blues, mixing in many other genres along the way. Like Mark Harrison, Ben guested on my BBC Radio Suffolk show prior to his Ipswich gig and he too impressed me greatly with his enthusiasm for the blues cause and, of course, his singing and playing. The next act at 5pm Blues Situation really don’t need any introduction to this region’s blues fraternity. Like Goofa Dust they are celebrating the release of a new album which has more than lived up to expectations. I firmly believe Luke Arnold, John Butters, Craig Fillbrook and Kelvin Hill are at the very top of their collective game. At 6pm a funky little blues combo from Kent will be on stage. Singer Lee Ainsley and her Blues Storm impressed me greatly at The Salutation in Ipswich earlier this year, so much so that I immediately

Find us on Facebook: GrapevineLIVE

Dave Thomas enlisted them for StowBlues. They have been playing all over the UK and I feel sure they will be well received by the StowBlues crowd. Another act performing at MEAL’s annual blues celebration for the first time are Automatic Slim. Their frantic take on the blues owes much to Dr Feelgood and Wilko Johnson and helped establish them as a must-see band back in the ‘80s and ‘90s. They did take a bit of break but returned to the scene a few years ago to play a handful of selected dates each year. StowBlues is one of the lucky ones in 2019 with Tim Aves and the gang performing a 75 minute set from 7pm. Rounding off StowBlues at 8-30pm will be the Dave Thomas Band and special guests. Dave, who’s based on the Suffolk/Norfolk border, is often visiting his beloved Chicago Blues Festival when StowBlues takes place but I’m delighted to report he’ll still be in the UK for this month’s bash and will be providing us with a fitting finale. Visitors to StowBlues will notice a few changes this year, most notably a switch to a bigger area in the museum grounds. Don’t worry it’ll still have the intimate feel that thousands of blues fans love about the festival. Admission is £15 which I have to say for eight hours of high quality live music remains a steal. I’ll be your compere from start to finish and all the bands are being recorded by sound man Richard Hersee for broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk at a later date. I do hope you can make it. You won’t regret it.

John Peel Centre

Celebrates Suffolk Bands Suffolk Day, on 21st June, is the annual celebration of all things Suffolk, with a variety of events being held across the county to show off everything Suffolk has to offer. Organisations in Stowmarket are joining in these celebrations, including the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts which is putting on a gig featuring three of Suffolk’s finest young bands: Tundra, KULK, and Naked French. Surf punk band Tundra originate from Sudbury, burst on to the bustling Bury St Edmunds scene in 2016, and first played at the John Peel Centre as support for American duo Sharkmuffin in May 2017. They won BurySound that same year, beating over twenty other worthy local bands to the title. The band consists of Elliott on drums and vocals, Elliot on bass and vocals, and Caitilin on guitar and vocals. They have also already supported Marmozets, Milk Teeth, and Desperate Journalist, and played at a host of festivals including The Cambridge Strawberry Fair, SwanFest

and BNatural alongside Superglu and Dingus Khan. Tundra released their Life’s A Beach EP in April 2018, which The Music Blog 42 described as “a defining moment in Tundra’s already memorable history”, and they are currently writing more songs to be released in 2019. Their last single, ‘Navy Red’ has been getting quite a bit of radio play, including by Steve Lamacq on 6 Music, John Kennedy on Radio X, and widespread radio play in the US. KULK are very local to the John Peel Centre, hailing from Stowmarket, and performed at the very first emerge local band night at the venue back in April 2017, as well as on the night that BBC Radio 6 Music and Steve Lamacq visited during Independent Venue Week 2018. The duo are Thom on guitar and vocals, with Jade on drums. KULK’s sound can be described as heavy alternative art punk, and have had a great start to 2019, supporting the likes of Pigs x7 and YAK. They are well known for their intense, unpredictable and spontaneity, and like Tundra, are really a band to watch. Formed in 2015 and from Ipswich, Naked French’s nostalgia soaked brand of jangly indie pop has been making a name for them around East Anglia. They recently released their EP “Honey, I’m Home”.

Tundra

Naked French combine their love for 80’s darlings such as New Order and The Smiths with the dreamy haze of bands like Cocteau Twins and Beach Fossils. The four members have yet to perform at the John Peel Centre, and are very much

Kulk looking forward to making their mark on Stowmarket. This gig will be the latest in a long line of gigs at the John Peel Centre that aim to showcase the best of local music. As many people will remember, John Peel was a huge advocate of new, emerging and unsigned talent, which is why the John Peel Centre plays a vital role in supporting grassroots music in the region. The emerge local band night has been running for over two years now, and has featured dozens of bands from across East Anglia, giving artists the chance to play to a different audience. Applications for these gigs are carefully considered, though there are so many amazing bands out there it simply is not possible to put them all on stage! As such, local bands have also been offered support slots for touring bands, or have headlined the Centre themselves, working with the team there to curate their own evenings. These gigs are usually only a few pounds for gig-goers to get in to, so are a very affordable way for music fans to see up-and-coming new talent, and it is only a matter of time before at least one of these bands goes international! The Suffolk Day gig featuring Tundra, KULK, and Naked French is on Friday 21st June, doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now. Visit www.johnpeelcentre.com for more information on this gig, and all other events.

go. I dare you to listen to ‘Invincible’ without turning the volume toward eleven! The brothers Bonson have created a class act, the album oozes energy - what oh what are they like live? Another one on the list to see. The Ashton Jones Project THE ASHTON JONES PROJECT

Still Managing DA MANAGEMENT

This is The Projects’ debut EP. That it is but the tip of the iceberg is good to know with more original recordings to come through the course of 2019. Jones’ silky smooth soul and funky delivery are well known to local audiences, their EP should see a lot more people hear about this band.

Describing themselves as ‘a five piece group of seasoned veterans’ I get the impression that ‘Da Management’ don’t take themselves too seriously. But they take their music seriously. They play fifties, sixties and seventies pop favourites. Perfectly pitched, crystal clear vocals backed by excellent musicianship. This album came unannounced through the post to Grapevine HQ, and a very pleasant surprise it was. You can catch the band playing live in and around Southend.

Hollowstar HOLLOWSTAR Warning! This album can lead to hours of air guitar practice and head banging! The riff that introduces the opening track ‘Take it All’ has you hooked from the get-

Seeds CORAL CROSS BAND I’ve not seen this group live, yet! They are on the list because I came across their music quite by accident. Then, just to emphasise the point the band got in touch to tell me about their EP... which I was listening to when the mail arrived! Who said there is no such thing as coincidence? Their music is incredibly catchy ‘Woman’ has become my earworm this week and ‘Little Fighter’ has lyrics I must find out more about! You can catch the band at Unicorn Fest at the end of June or at the AIR Vision gig at The OPEN in July. (Yes, there is a Unicorn Fest in our region, Hoptonon-sea, Norfolk)

June is always a favourite month of mine, possibly because it’s when my birthday falls and the sun is usually shining – but sometimes it’s nice to escape the heat and relax in a theatre; and this month I’m looking at how you can combine trips to the theatre with the seaside over this Summer. After all, us Brits do like to be beside the seaside don’t we? The most obvious starter would be Theatre On The Coast, starting at Southwold Arts Centre from July 10th to August 31st. There will be four shows to choose from so there’s bound to be something for everyone. Kicking off the season is The End of the Line (10-20th July), from East Anglian writer, actor and director Patrick Marlowe. His career includes work for the National Theatre and Eastern Angles. The story begins with two beach huts, and two very different couples about to meet for the first time. Their lives, and their precious huts, will never be the same again. Following this, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman bring their show A Bunch of Amateurs (23rd July – 3rd Aug) to the region. Fading Hollywood action hero, Jefferson Steele touches down in the UK to take on the role of a lifetime – Shakespeare’s tragic King Lear. Only this isn’t Stratford upon Avon, but Stratford St John in the middle of Suffolk, and his co-stars are not the famous names he expected but local amateurs who are fighting to save their beloved theatre from closure. Debbie Isitt is well-known for her hit comedy films ‘Nativity’ and ‘Confetti’, but in this 90s play, she paints a hilarious and gruesome picture of a deserted wife’s revenge on her ex-husband. When Hillary invites Keith to dinner, together with his new girlfriend Lauren, her guests are not prepared for what she will serve up as the main course! Prepare yourselves for ‘The woman who cooked her husband’ (6-17th August). One of the great classics of the British stage returns, as Harold Brighouse’s immortal Lancashire comedy is given a sparkling fresh

revival, translated from the late 1890s to 1958, in a new production first seen last year in the playwright’s 60th anniversary – don’t miss Hobson’s Choice (20-31st August) starring John D Collins playing out the season. Plus, for budding theatre stars of the future, you can get into Shakespeare by the Sea with Workshop for Young Theatre On The Coast (for ages 8-18) – giving two full days of magic, mystery, shipwrecks and fun at the Music Room in Aldeburgh Primary School (Weds 7th & Thurs 8th Aug, 10.30-15.30). CBM Theatre Co return to the Spa Pavilion in Felixstowe with another blockbuster musical, as this Summer they present Thoroughly Modern Millie (25-27th July). Based on the 1967 film and the Tony Awardwinning Broadway show of the same name, audiences are transported to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when “moderns”, including a flapper named Millie Dillmount, were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines, entering the workforce, and rewriting the rules of love, and in Millie’s case in search of a new life for herself. Expect an evening of madcap musical merriment! This season is also great for variety shows – it’s long been an English Seaside tradition, and it continues to be popular for families of all ages. It’s often a great introduction into theatre for youngsters too. You can expect singing, dancing, comedy and a talented troupe of entertainers. A few notable mentions go to The Summer Show at the West Cliff Theatre in Clacton (runs on selected dates in August), Gorleston Theatre’s Summer Laughter Show (every Tuesday from now through to 8th October), PAPA & Clockwork Summer Show at the Seagull Theatre, Lowestoft (20th July) and the Cromer Pier Show (2nd July-21st September). There we have it – lots of stagey Seaside events to keep you entertained! Grab those ice creams, and enjoy the seasonal offerings…
