WELCOME CONTENTS

A Sun filled blessed Greeting from the Editorial Team to the church leadership, every member, contributor, participant. We are well into the summer season, July has begun with a strong heatwave, for which we give God Thanks and Praise simply because the earth is the Lord’s. The last issue celebrated youth ministry and fellowship. We enjoyed our Youth Convention in May with great young teachers and preachers of God’s Word and we are still anticipating an extreme move of God. Great is the faithfulness of God and His mercies are new every morning and he promises that “HIS” Glory can never and will never be shared. The move of God is guaranteed. To coincide with the blistering summer, this July/August issue brings a wealthy and healthy edition dedicated to men’s ministry and fellowship. There is an exciting and very thoughtful interview with the leader of the men’s fellowship, read on to share his profile. The cover story charts the history of the Church’s men’s fellowship, there are many testimonies and in depth inspiring health and spiritual advice. Also included, there is a recipe to try, much to read and digest. Prostate Cancer Awareness is on-going and men are always encouraged to arrange for a check-up because as we know with the old time yet very present saying. “Prevention is better than cure”. Men go to your health provider for the check, its worth the effort. In this edition of the newsletter a faithful brother shares his experience of prostate cancer and health advice. We are living in a time now when the role of the man is under scrutiny and sometimes being heavily challenged, we can never get away from God’s order. He is not the author of confusion. Men are designed to take the lead lovingly and not in arrogance or brute strength. Adam received a help meet (suitable) for the advancement of life and God took a rib from his side and created Eve. A wise woman will stand beside her husband, pastor, leader and allow God to be at the helm, providing a sound prayer life and strength. In other words “female intuition” A sound stable woman makes a strong loving man of leading qualities. Its a simple truth and is the foundation of life, which cannot be erased. Young men are in need of strong leadership and examples of courage and determination, the true church will always be the pillar and the ground of truth. Enjoy this men’s edition and and let’s make steps to rebuild the walls that made our community strong in the beginning. Keep cool in this season and fortify your prayer life.

COVER STORY MEN’S FELLOWSHIP

R

ender therefore to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.” Romans 13 v 7. Giving Honour to the Holy Spirit first and foremost, I greet our Bishop, The Rt. Reverend Alvin Blake, the Elders and the Deacons. To our first lady, Mother Blake, the officers, the auxiliary workers, the general church membership, children, visitors and friends in the mighty name of our Lor“d and Saviour Jesus Christ. I specifically began with the scripture verse in respect and honour for the vision of a former member, brother John Montrose whose concern was that the men of the assembly meet and share on a deeper, personal and spiritual level. I acknowledge and appreciate the part he played in the very beginning. Elder Paul Quinton, Brother John Montrose and Brother Eddy King sought the approval of our church leadership and the men’s fellowship group was started. Elder Quinton was the first leader of the group, after which the baton was passed to Brother King, who faithfully is the present leader. The men’s fellowship paved the way for the women’s fellowship to be established. This is testament to one person pursuing their vision and desire, sets the wheels in motion for others. If there is something that any member believes is helpful to the church corporately and individually, I encourage you to get support and present it to the leadership for approval. Men’s fellowship is an essential ministry, whereby believers and non-believers can meet and discuss The Holy Bible in-depth, particularly in relation to the issues and challenges faced in our Christian walk. The meetings are of great interest and can often

4

run over time, proving the enjoyment in discussing God’s word. Our discussions may begin with a question with varying views relating to any topic or issue, usually the general consensus is a greater understanding and meaning of the scripture. I thank the Holy Spirit for his leading and direction. The discussions are led by different individuals, choosing the scripture or topic and with that opportunity has been provided for us to learn some of the procedures, rules and protocol of the Church. On behalf of the brothers we are grateful to Elder Maddix for his contribution and input sharing insight into this great denomination COGIC. Men’s fellowship is a wonderful platform on which to discuss men’s health and wellbeing, such as prostate cancer and the expectations placed on Christian men. It was also the desire of Brother Montrose that we have an arena as men to share on a personal level the things that can affect us, whilst not yet sharing in a group setting, the confidence should be built to find an individual brother with whom one can share. Young and teenage men should be able to have the forum to get help with challenges they face every day. A well thought out mentoring scheme, would be beneficial to guide them through their stages of growth and development. This is a very vital area of support for our Christian youth so they can remain strong and constantly active in the church. As we know men are less in number in the church community and leadership, so men’s fellowship is an extension of church life for those becoming disillusioned and falling by the wayside. Brother King has taken the time to utilise technology/social media to form a men’s

©ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

access group where he/we can suggest topics and communicate with each other on a spiritual and personal level, even personal life events such as birthdays. Current communication technology is under used in our churches. The Bible College also has the opportunity to utilise modern technology to reach and teach more students. Effort has been made to bring the modules to the individual church assemblies and its also a great way of fellowshipping. Video conferencing is another effect modern tool, we know technology has its problems and challenges, yet can be very effective in reaching others and a link to other men’s fellowship groups. We attended bowling one year which was a great help in socialising and getting to know each other better, more of the same is welcome. The fellowship has been instrumental in helping one of our senior members with gardening, an area I am truly called to. The fellowship is vast in ministry as the word of God encourages us to care for the fatherless, widow(er)s, the poor and the needy. Men are most definitely in the minority, so I am appealing to any readership, family members, members of the community to try and attend occasionally. We did not always have this privilege/opportunity and its a responsibility to keep this fellowship and the other auxiliaries going especially as the core membership are getting on in years. “Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another and so much more as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10 v 24-25.

Brother Bernie Abbey LNEWS

OUR MEN’S FELLOWSHIP PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS - BROTHER PETER DOUGLAS

I

am writing these few words, about my experience of this serious problem faced by many men. I was among the many that heard of the prostate problem, and how many lives it claimed each year. I felt within myself that it would never happen to me, because of my fit and healthy state. As a result of this I dismissed all the talk being said about this problem. One day I went to the doctor with a cough that I had for about 4 weeks, which I could not seem to get rid of. After the doctor gave me a prescription for that, I then told him of another problem I was suffering with at night. I was having to get up several times a night to pass water. The doctor having listened to this then referred me to the hospital for a flow test. One week later when the results were processed, I had an appointment sent to me from the hospital to come for a test. After

going through the procedure the consultant arranged another appointment, where they discovered I had Prostate Cancer. I truly gave God thanks for these good and blessed people from the NHS which are the professors, consultants, doctors, nurses and pharmacists. With the NHS providing an exceptional standard of care for me. They are a huge part of the reason that I am still alive today. My advice to all men both young and old, is to have yourself checked out. For it is a disease which attacks you without you even knowing it. To conclude, it is better to be safe than sorry. God Bless.

HOW STRONG IS YOUR FAITH? IS IT STRONG OR IS IT WEAK? - DEACON HARRISON

T

he scripture tells us that if one has Faith as a grain of mustard seed you can say unto the mountain remove and it shall be removed. I will divide Faith into three different categories: Faith (A) FAITH IS THE SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR THE EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN HEBREWS 11 V 1 This in my opinion requires strong Faith, having Faith in something that you have not seen, or have any idea of or even experienced and still have total trust requires very strong Faith. There are many people in this world today who do not exercise any Faith, in God, themselves or anything else. The scripture teaches us that Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the Word of God. (Romans 10 v 17) Faith (B) LETS EQUATE WITH HARD BELIEVING THOMAS In this context as in St John 20 v 29 here we can see that Thomas did not have strong enough Faith in believing that Jesus was the risen Christ, so Jesus had to tell him because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed. Blessed are they that have not seen yet have believed. Not everyone has the same measure of Faith. Romans 12 v 3 For I say through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think

soberly according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of Faith Faith (C) PROBABLE EVIDENCE In this third category it could be suggested that this is the most common amongst mortals and not necessarily through the Divine. It is said that Faith is the assent of the mind to a probable truth of what is declared by another. A firm and earnest belief on probable evidence of any kind. Having Faith in God is indeed different. In Romans 3 v 3-4 it states, what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the Faith of God without effect? God forbid. In Conclusion: what does the future hold for the world? New hope or false hope? Isaiah 53 v 1 asks who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of The Lord revealed? Things are changing fast and not for the better. The new information age has put events beyond the control of the authorities. The old standard has gone, and what about the peace of the world? 1st Thessalonians 1 v 3 reminds us, Remembering without ceasing your work of Faith. Gob bless you all on behalf of Men’s Fellowship

WHY I LOVE MEN’S FELLOWSHIP - BROTHER OLIVER BUHLINGER MEng

M

y name is Oliver Buhlinger. I am a Manufacturing Engineer. I have loved Men’s fellowship from the first time I attended over a year ago. It is a time to enjoy the fellowship of brothers and passionately discuss current issues and the word of God. It always gets firery and there is lots of joy and laughter. On a serious note though, I always take something home with me. As we bounce our knowledge around we are sharpening each other and I always return home edified. Having moved to Luton in July 2013, I was able to have a sense of community and build friendships. Everyone in the body of Christ has a gift from God which was given to benefit

the church. Sometimes it is difficult to come out of your shell during a church service but at men’s fellowship it is a safe environment and people are encouraged to lead and share a topic or suggest one. Through this gathering I have grown as a man and would like to thank Brother King for his obedience to God and dedication to the cause. On a Friday evening, when the men come together in unity, God releases a blessing. God bless

MEN’S FELLOWSHIP - BROTHER MICHAEL JARVIS The Bible tells us in Hebrews 10 v 25 not to forsake the assembling of the saints together, but exhorting one another. Church is great and the words spoken are in spirit and in truth, but there are times when specific topics need to be discussed in a closed arena, especially matters close to the heart. The men’s fellowship has provided me with great insight into God’s word and most importantly helped to correct and divide the word of truth. I continue to enjoy our lively discussions on God’s word and how it applies to our daily walk. No matter how heated the debate, it is all done in love. It is important that every Christian knows the word for themselves so that slight misinterpretations can be corrected without unnecessary strife. An example I have, is for many years I have read a particular scripture and based my relationship with my wife on that one scripture (I bet you would like to know what it is!!) After attending a men’s fellowship evening we discussed the scripture, and having

LNEWS

discussed the whole chapter, I had to thank God that my eyes were opened and I could approach aspects of my marriage in a completely different way. I would encourage all men to attend the fellowship as it provides us with great teaching and an environment where we can be real, knowing that the forum is confidential. It helps one to grow spiritually and also to take charge of our health. In the past I have felt aches and pains, which I have endured, walked it off or ignored altogether. There is a myth that it is not manly to go to the doctor. However, life has shown that this attitude can be the fast track to the grave. In men’s fellowship we discuss health issues and the advice is always make an appointment to see your doctor! The fellowship helps our spiritual lives with vibrant debates in which we rightly divide the word of truth and also provides practical advice. There are many victorious testimonies pertaining to health issues that affect men. So please attend.

KNOWING YOU BROTHER EDDIE KING

LNEWS: Describe your Conversion Briefly. BEK: My true conversion came whilst I was living in the U.S.A. It is funny how God will take you out of your familiar surroundings to get your attention. I had been living in the U.S.A. for about four years when I was arrested by God. I was going through a very difficult time in my personal life, as I drove past an open air meeting, I looked at the gathering and just kept moving, suddenly I found myself reversing the car. I received a tract from one of the brothers in attendance, I remember taking it home, placing it beside the television. The following Sunday morning I was drawn to the same tract and after reading it I decided to go to Church, and the rest is history. LNEWS: How long have you been a Christian? BEK: I was raised in the Church of England, but I would honestly say I have been a Christian for over 18 years. LNEWS: Are You married with Children? BEK: I am married to a wonderful Christian lady, Sandra King. I have known her for over thirty years. I have two precious daughters Dionne Morrison and Latoya King. LNEWS: Are your family a part of Church Life? BEK: My entire family is actively engaged in Church Life, my wife attends COGIC Luton with me. She is a member of the church choir and Praise and Worship team. My daughter Dionne attends COGIC Watford she is a member of the Praise and Worship team, her husband plays the keyboard and her son Malachi plays the drums. My daughter Latoya and her daughter is active in a pentecostal church in Barbados. LNEWS: What is your country of origin? BEK: I was born in the sunny island of Barbados also known as “Little Britain” LNEWS: Give us a brief view of your upbringing? BEK: My mother and father were disciplinarians. My ancestry includes the first Speaker of the House of Assembly in Barbados and Governor Generals (Queens representative in Barbados). I was not exempt from normal childhood chores, I had to sweep the yard and do the weeding. My father was a decorator and he ensured that I learnt decorating. My parents also did agriculture and I assisted them in the market. I know all about tending to pigs, sheep and goats to the disbelief of many! I would not change my upbringing, though hard at times. My parents laid a good foundation of value and discipline which still guide me today. LNEWS: What does your country of origin mean to you? BEK: My county of origin is very dear to my heart and I want the world to know that I am a bajan. In Barbados great emphasis is placed on education, and the educational system is unmatched. It is said that wherever you go you will find a bajan. Our motto is “Pride and Industry” and instilled in every child. Discipline and Industry were my watch words and gave me the drive to excel at management, being a well sought after Production and Operations manager throughout the Caribbean. I worked in an American Airlines subsidiary. With the country’s motto I have pride in myself. Thank You Barbados! LNEWS: As Leader of the Men’s Fellowship, describe your role? BEK: I do lead the Men’s Fellowship but see my role more as a facilitator, having worked in management, its a great help in the work of The Lord. I believe in showcasing the potential of others which is the true leadership role, also to provide encouragement, enlightenment and a more focused group of individuals. The manifestation of the fruits of one’s labour is what matters most. At times difficult, Philippians 3 v 14 reminds me to press towards the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. LNEWS: How long have you been in this role? BEK: I have been the leader of the department for over 10 years LNEWS: How important is it for men in ministry to reach others? BEK: Men are one of the greatest assets in the church’s evangelical tool kit. Our duty as Christian men is to influence our young men with love and a genuine interest in their welfare. Young men should not only be encouraged in secular interests i.e. sport, but be encouraged to be actively engaged in spiritual 6

matters. We are our brother’s keeper. Each man in the church must make a concerted effort to reach at least one young man, Jesus spoke to his disciples saying that they would be witnesses both in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the earth. We can make a difference. Men lets do so! LNEWS: What do you love about serving God? BEK: The peace, joy and happiness I find in God’s word. The learning and revelation is constant. The Apostle Paul sums it up.. Oh the depths of riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. God is awesome and there is no end to his mighty works. LNEWS: Share with us an amusing ministry moment. BEK: Having received the invitation from Bro. Stanley, I decided to attend church that Sunday morning. After church was over a very unassuming gentleman came and engaged me in conversation. We spoke for about fifteen minutes, and at the end I asked the question; who is the pastor of the Church? The response was I am. I was so embarrassed and started to apologize. He was very accommodating, and from that moment we became very good friends. Talk about putting foot in mouth! LNEWS: What is your vision for the future of men’s ministry? BEK: My vision for the future of men’s ministry is that it will make such an impact and act as a springboard for the birth of men’s ministry in other churches. My hope is that we as Christian men will make a difference in our homes, churches and communities. LNEWS: Describe yourself in three words. BEK: Driven, Dedicated, Generous. LNEWS: What is your leisure of choice? BEK: Gardening is my leisure of choice. LNEWS: Please share a word of encouragement with the readership. BEK: 1st Timothy 6 v 7 reminds us that we brought nothing into this world and we can carry nothing out. The scripture is reminding us that as we pursue and amass the material things of this life we cannot carry it with us. Death is not the issue but our destination is. This is determined through dying with or without Christ. There is nothing wrong with enjoying life but not at the expense of your soul. My encouragement is store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor dust can corrupt and where thieves do not break in and steal. Death is real, but then comes the judgement, seek God first and his righteousness. LNEWS: On a scale of 1-10 how did you enjoy this interview? Here are the 10 ratings: 1. Once and once only 2. Phew! Made it… 3. I am glad its over, I don’t like questions 4. Wouldn’t do this in person 5. Very interesting look at my life 6. I did as best as I could 7. I am shy and overwhelmed 8. I am incredibly shy but don’t mind 9. I love it, wouldn’t do it again though (not for a long time) 10. I love it, would do it again BEK 10

LUSH LEAVES - PART 2

St Mark 11:17

Jesus taught the people saying "is it not written, my house shall be called of all nations the house of "prayer? But ye have made it a den of thieves". This is the 2nd part of our series - we pick up the narrative as Jesus returns from Bethany to Jerusalem - hungry! In the distance Jesus sees a fig tree displaying leaves. The leaves of a fig tree are quite big so you can imagine the wonderful display - green and lush. Now, it was not yet the time for fruit and therefore one could almost feel pity for the fig tree. However, the tree should, given its lush leaves be showing signs of bearing fruit in the future but instead Jesus “...found nothing but leaves...”. Jesus speaks to the tree and declares that it will never bear fruit again. Jesus then returns to the temple, remember he had looked around at all the events taking

place in the temple the day before and now He is back. Jesus demonstrates his passion for His

Father’s house and begins to clear the temple. What does this mean for the worshipper? The fig tree looked promising from a distance but

on closer inspection it was not showing any signs of bearing fruit in the future. The lush leaves were just that and nothing more; a smokescreen. The temple at Jerusalem was magnificent. When you see a temple you expect Godly activity to take place inside, but instead Jesus found hypocrisy. Worldliness. “...a den of thieves...”. Nothing remotely resembling what should have been taking place. For the worshipper, looking the part is not enough. Jesus expects us to bear fruit “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away...” St John 15:2a.
