Badminton Bound Ben Leathers

Ben Leathers and Kauto Cryeo are looking forward to competing at the Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships at Badminton

Ben has two horses to compete this season, Kauto Cryeo and Con Rico

In preparation for Badminton, Ben has had regularly training sessions with dressage rider, Andrew Gould.

S

ussex event rider Ben Leathers is preparing for his Mitsubishi Badminton Horse Trials Grassroots debut with his own horse, Kauto Cryeo. A British Eventing and BHSI accredited coach, Ben has owned Kauto now for just three years and has produced him since he came out of racing. Related to Kauto Star, the nine-year-old thoroughbred, Kauto Cryeo, struggled at first over cross poles, but with a dedicated training programme Ben has produced him into a promising eventer, with big plans for his future. Growing up in Australia, Ben competed at Australia’s equivalent of the Horse of the Year Show, before emigrating to the UK in his late teens. Whilst Ben now primarily events, his early experiences have helped him to cope with the pressure of competing and goal setting. Proving it is always good to have a contingency plan in place, Ben’s four year plan to qualify Kauto Cryeo for the Grassroots Championships, came a year earlier than expected.

Plenty of preparation Over the winter, in preparation for Badminton, Ben has been

having regular weekly sessions with international dressage rider, Andrew Gould and eventing four star veteran, Chris Burton (AUS). Both have been an important part of the training schedule ensuring consistency and maximum responses from both horse and rider.

Looking to the future Ben runs Homelands Equestrian in Partridge Green, West Sussex with his wife Jo Leathers BHSAI. The pair are committed to producing competition horses for the future and are in the early stages of a breeding programme. It will be a few years before Ben will be able to compete a homebred horse and for now he has added to his string with the purchase of Con Rico, a ten-year-old Holstein gelding. In between competitions and training, Ben gives regular clinics, both privately and through British Eventing. To find out more about Ben visit www.homelands-equestrian.co.uk

W

hether you are watching on television or lucky enough to be visiting the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, there are plenty of local riders to watch and cheer. They include Badminton first timer, Rose Carnegie with the 12-year-old mare, Landine. By Landilot, Rose has produced the mare for six seasons, gaining plenty of wins and placings along the way.

2014 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials winners, Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh, will be returning to defend their title.

Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championship

T

he Championships for BE90 and BE100, which have been taking place at Badminton since 2010, begin ahead of the world famous Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. The competition is a unique opportunity for riders at the entry levels of the sport to gain a chance to ride across the same hallowed turf as their sporting idols at the top end of the sport. The competition is fierce at the Regional qualifiers, but as always we have a strong contingent heading to Badminton for both the BE90 and BE100 Grassroots Championships. The following is a list of the combinations who have qualified and hopefully will be taking up the challenge this year. Good Luck to you all!
