his issue highlights everything that is fantastic about equestrianism. There are 11 pages dedicated to readers’ veterans. These treasures of the equine world have led rich and varied lives with many still competing into their late 20s. See page 16 to read more. One of the ponies featured, Bonnie, is now teaching her owner Shelley Cousins’ daughter Amelia to ride. Bonnie turns 30 in April and we wanted to take this opportunity of wishing her a fantastic birthday, which she is celebrating with her pony friends. Older horses and ponies are wonderful at passing on their wisdom and experience to the next generation and one should never underestimate an older horse or pony when they are looking to purchase their next equine friend. I thought you might like to see my own horse, Emily (pictured right), now aged 28, who was happy for my nieces to ride her during the February halfterm. Emily now lives a pampered life in retirement with my mother, who bred her. If only I could turn the clock back twenty years.
Birthday Celebrations!

Mike Aiken found his perfect horse in Henry, another equine of a certain vintage. Mike has owned Henry for the past three years and enjoys hacking, combined with a small amount of hunting and competing. We caught up with Mike on the morning of his eightieth birthday at The Rotherfield Woodlands Riding Club Winter Dressage Show, which was being held at Mayfield School in East Sussex. Mike’s friends surprised him with a small picnic party, fabulous cake included. You can find out more on page 12.
Cross Country Schooling As I sit at my desk writing, the sun is shining outside, and the ground is perfect for cross country schooling. We have been running the “Where to go Cross Country Schooling” Guide (see page 50) for a number of years now, and I was delighted this year to see the addition of new courses as well as some fabulous improvements made to existing ones. We hope you have an amazing time visiting as many of the courses as you can.
Show Dates Guide

This issue also includes the annual Show Dates Guide with 12 pages of local events for the coming season. Turn to page 68. There is something for everyone, whether you enjoy dressage, jumping, showing or hacking through beautiful countryside. Whilst there is so much to look forward to, I must remind you of the sad news of equine flu outbreaks around the country. If your horse hasn’t been vaccinated in the last six months, it is recommended to seek advice from your own vet, as to whether a booster is required. For those of you going out to compete, remember to check the organiser’s website for updated details of what inoculations they require your horse to have and any other requirements. Whatever you do or wherever you go this summer, remember to keep in touch via social media or email as we love knowing what you have been up to. Have fun!

ounded by British Riding Instructor Anna Skippon, Baybee’s Riding School in Luxembourg offers summer riding camps in the beautiful Luxembourg countryside. Running throughout July and August the camps offer children aged seven and over the opportunity to enjoy a jam-packed week of riding, learning and fun. Children travelling alone can be collected from the airport, or why not consider making it a family holiday, with parents being able to stay in a nearby bed and breakfast. Some of you may know Baybee’s founder, Anna Skippon, as she grew up and competed regularly in East Sussex before moving to Luxembourg seven years ago. www.baybeesridingschool.com
Pippa and William join other Charity VIPs, Founder of The Liverpool Horse Show & Bolesworth International Nina Barbour, ITN News presenter Alastair Stewart, International Showjumpers Scott Brash, Nick Skelton and Olympic eventer Gemma Tattersall. The Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund is the only UK Charity that doesn’t just help injured riders; it helps anyone injured in a horse related accident where no other help is readily available. The Charity relies entirely on donations and support from the equestrian community to continue their invaluable work. www.mdirf.co.uk

Summer Camps in Luxembourg
When asked why they were keen to support the Charity by formal association, Pippa said: “William and I are both delighted to become Vice Presidents of MDIRF. We are passionate about our lives with our equine friends, but unfortunately accidents go with the industry. The work of MDIRF really can make a difference to supporting injured riders and their families to raising awareness and campaigning on safety issues within the industry.”

Windmill Feedstore & Saddlery Here to Stay The Windmill Feeds feedstore and saddlery at Cross in Hand, were previously under threat of closure as the result of their site’s previous owners looking to develop the property. The branch based near Heathfield in East Sussex is no longer under the threat of closure after the owners of Windmill Feeds permanently secured ownership of the site. Speaking after the successful purchase, Martin Hook said: “It’s great news on several fronts, the entrance to the property can now be improved so that the visibility is better as you enter and exit the site, it has secured employment in the local area for the staff who work on the site and it has staved off the possibility of customers having to travel further to buy their pet food, animal feed or saddlery items. The staff at both the feedstore and the saddlery will continue to offer great service and advice, whether it’s about feeding your animals, your pets, or any equestrian needs for you and your horse.” If you want to find out more about what Windmill Feeds & Saddlery can offer you, your pets or your animals please visit www.windmillfeeds.co.uk

How Hoof Proof are your feet? Has your horse made a good impression on you? If not, you are one of the lucky ones. Of all accidents at the stables foot injuries are by far the most common. It all happens in a flash of a second, often resulting in, at best a bruise and at worst, a broken toe. Yet wearing properly constructed boots with toe protection would eliminate most of the risks. Boots made to the correct safety standards can withstand a compression in excess of 1000 kilo, which is more than the weight of most horses. Enter at A – and other tales Popular East Sussex author and dressage judge, Lyn Watts, has written a handy booklet for the beginner in the gentle art of dressage. Lyn felt that there was a real need for an inexpensive guide aimed at pointing out common errors in dressage tests at the lower levels. It also has a small section for those organising small shows on the correct etiquette and timings. The aim is to encourage organisers to win over their judges at a very early stage so that they stay loyal to them for the years to come. Enter at A – and other tales of terror illustrates the 40 x 20 metre arena and draws out some of the common movements of the earlier dressage tests so that the rider is familiar with what the judge is looking for (and, indeed, can see) in circles, diagonals and serpentines. It also explains some of the more usual mistakes the judge marks down such as poor ring-craft and breaking some of the basic rules. The book will assist the beginner in improving marks in competition thereby giving improved confidence and encouragement to progress. Launched in November 2018, the book has proved an instant hit. As with all of Lyn’s books, it is published by WattKnott Publishing and is priced at just £5. Copies can be obtained from Farthing Saddlery at Three Cups, Heathfield, John’s Cross Tackroom, Sian’s Saddlery at Coopers Green, Uckfield, Lusted Feeds near Hankham, Eastbourne, Follyfoot in Hailsham or direct from the publishers postage free www.wattknottpublishing.co.uk, as well as online via Ebay or Amazon. A Kindle version is in the pipeline and will be available very soon too.
London Harness Horse Parade The London Harness Horse Parade, one of the oldest and most wellloved carriage driving events in the country, will again take place at the South of England Centre, Ardingly, West Sussex on Easter Monday 22nd April. Any owner of a cart or carriage or historic vehicle is welcome to take part in the parade to depict transportation through the ages. The annual event is an amalgamation of The London Cart Horse Parade (first started in 1885) and the London Van Horse Parade (started in 1904). Generations of carriage-driving families make the annual Easter pilgrimage to the Parade and the current President, WA Gilbey, is a direct descendant of the founder of the London Cart Horse Parade, Sir Walter Gilbey Bart. This annual Easter event is excellent value for a family costing just £10 per adult with children and parking is free. The event will also feature stationary engines, trade stands, refreshments and horse drawn wagon rides.

Equine Patch By Alex Aungier
“
About EquinePatch
EquinePatch was born from the success of using magnets on a splint, on our LR SHP HOYS champion Uphill Toy Soldier. We used a patch made of Neodymium Earth magnets, sourced from a friend who makes magnetic therapy items for humans.
We believe that an EquinePatch should form part of everyone’s horsecare kit, splints and leg issues are about timing, the quicker you can aid healing, the better for your horse.
All our products use Neodymium rare earth magnets at 2800 Gauss per magnet making them one of the strongest products available on the market. They are also made in the UK and more affordable than most magnetic products available, plus they are 100% non-invasive.
“I have been using the EquinePatch since it was first released on two of our ponies. Our HOYS winner Cadlanvalley Mikado has benefited enormously from the positive effects of this new product; he had a splint that was potentially going to end his show career. I use the patch on him every day, 12 hours on and 12 hours off and I’m so pleased with the results I even brought a spare! Because of the size of the patch it’s perfect for targeting specific areas so it’s great for the treatment of something like a splint. I would highly recommend the Equine Patch to anyone!”
The feedback since our launch in November 2018 has been amazing, and the product has been sold to top show producers and amateurs alike. We also make bespoke products such as wraps and boots for horses and humans.
Hayley Grota has also had great results using the EquinePatch:
This bipolar magnetic patch incorporates 4 x 2800 GUASS Neodymium magnets. This path, which is 100% non-evasive will help with the treatment and healing of splints, arthritis, windgalls, spavins, thorough-pins and tendon injuries. The patch can be placed to target a specific area, and is held in place by a bandage or boot.
Helps treatment for: Splints Arthritis Windgalls Spavins Thorough-pins Tendon injuries We recommend that this product is used alongside current treatment and not as a replacement for veterinary services. Always seek advice from your vet.

NEWS Two Brains One Aim
E
ric Smiley, FBHS together with Ellie Hughes has written a brilliantly incisive book, packed full of extremely practical exercises, called, Two Brains One Aim: A Riding Coach’s Key Concepts for bringing Horse and Rider Together. Eric says: The book is aimed at riders, coaches, and anyone interested in learning more about how humans and horses interact. I have tried to harness my own experiences when I cover the three main disciplines, dressage, show jumping and eventing, and how they relate to one another. I look at how those in a coaching position can guide riders to perform better by making their lives less complicated and more fulfilling, and I examine how riders can apply the same principles to training their horses and become self-sufficient.” Published by the Kenilworth Press, find out more at www.quillerpublishing.com

NAF Five Star Magic Magic is a magnesium calmer with a difference. It’s a five star formula that contains a unique combination of herbs and nutrients known to help relax muscle tissue and support concentration. Magnesium is an essential nutrient to a horse’s wellbeing, and among its many roles is the regulation of nervous tension. As magnesium also acts on muscle tension, a horse low in magnesium may appear ‘tight’ in his way of going and express excitability or a lack of confidence. Low magnesium may be caused by a grazing deficiency or simply a horse or pony’s individual metabolism. Magnesium levels can also be reduced by regular travel and competition. Magic is more than just magnesium; it also contains a blend of herbs chosen for their traditional use in supporting confidence and concentration. The unique blend of magnesium and herbal support of Magic enables the horse to tackle all that is asked of it, calmly and confidently. Note: NAF are pleased to confirm that the magnesium used in Magic does not contravene FEI rules and is safe for use in all horses. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
EquinePatch Magnets Alex Aungier proprietor of EquinePatch says: “EquinePatch was born from the success of using magnets on a splint, on our LR SHP HOYS Champion Uphill Toy Soldier. We used a patch made of Neodymium Earth magnets, sourced from a friend who makes magnetic therapy items for humans. All our products use Neodymium rare earth magnets at 2800 Gauss per magnet making them one of the strongest products available on the market. They are also made in the UK and more affordable than most magnetic products available, plus they are 100% non-invasive. The feedback since our launch in November 2018 has been amazing, and the product has been sold to top show producers and amateurs alike. We also make bespoke products such as wraps and boots for horses and humans. We believe that an EquinePatch should form part of everyone’s horse care kit, splints and leg issues are about timing, the quicker you can aid healing, the better for your horse. Hayley Grota has also had great results using the EquinePatch: “I have been using the EquinePatch since it was first released on two of our ponies. Our HOYS winner Cadlanvalley Mikado has benefited enormously from the positive effects of this new product; he had a splint that was potentially going to end his show career. I use the patch on him every day, 12 hours on and 12 hours off and I’m so pleased with the results I even brought a spare. Because of the size of the patch it’s perfect for targeting specific areas so it’s great for the treatment of something like a splint. I would highly recommend the Equine Patch to anyone.” www.equinepatch.co.uk

CAREERS
“Successful completion of the pre-apprenticeship course leads to a full-time paid job”
A Career in Racing?
Did you know that you can study for an Apprenticeship in the Horseracing industry? You don’t have to be able to ride, but loving horses or animals and the great outdoors will help. Plus, if you complete your studies successfully, you’re guaranteed a placement in a yard as a Trainee Racing Groom to work through your apprenticeship.
R
acing and Thoroughbred breeding offers a range of exciting and challenging roles and training opportunities. You could be involved with breeding or racing some of the best horses in the country or even the world, plus there are opportunities to pursue a career in another part of this diverse industry. From Racing Grooms and Digital Editors to Stud Hands and Catering Staff, there is something for everyone in this historic sport. British Racing is a major industry, worth over £3.45 billion annually to the national economy, it is the second largest spectator sport and is responsible for 85,000 direct and indirect full-time jobs.
Training courses There are over 14,000 people working directly with racehorses, many of whom will be Racing Grooms and Stud Hands. They will have learnt their skills in riding and looking after horses at one of the dedicated industry training providers in Britain. The British Racing School in Suffolk and Northern Racing College in Yorkshire, both deliver a wide range of training courses
including the Apprenticeship in Racehorse Care, a common route into horseracing for young people who want to ride and look after racehorses. For those who want to explore the breeding side of the industry, looking after mares and foals, the National Stud in Newmarket offers an Entry to Stud Employment course and a Diploma course.
Working with racehorses
Imagine if your job was to look after and ride racehorses every day. It’s the perfect job in a fast-paced industry, which also comes with potential for career progression, a structured pay scheme and opportunities to travel the world. Now you just need to know how you access the Horseracing world, well it’s much easier than most people think. You don’t need any experience, you don’t need to find your job, but you do need to investigate the courses on offer at The British Racing School and the Northern Racing College.
British Racing School
The British Racing School runs an Apprenticeship programme in Racehorse Care which is open to absolute beginners.
What’s the catch? There isn’t one, as long as you are an EU citizen aged 16 to 22-years-old and are physically fit, then you will be invited to the School for an interview. If you prove you have what it takes you will be accepted onto a 14 week pre-apprenticeship programme. Successful completion, at the required standard, of the pre-apprenticeship course, leads to a fulltime paid job in the horseracing industry where you are supported in completing your Apprenticeship.
The start of the journey… The Apprenticeship can be just the start of your journey in racing. The multi-million pound industry offers an array of career options, including working as Stable Staff, a Jockey, Travelling Head Person, Trainer or perhaps even branching out into Bloodstock sales. Whichever option appeals there are training courses and qualifications to assist you in making your job your career and your career your dream job. With a career in horseracing, you’ll never look back, be prepared for a life that offers travel, excitement and a future full of opportunity.
For more information on what the British Racing School could offer you visit www.brs.org.uk and for information about the Northern Racing College and other career opportunities in racing visit www.careersinracing.com 14 Localrider MARCH/APRIL 2019

astlehill Ka La La has found his perfect new jockey in Issy Butcher, as they both live for show jumping. Issy’s family bought the now 21-year-old 13.2hh Irish pony last June, since when Issy has qualified for the Springboard final at Southview in April, which has a starting height of 1m. They have also qualified for the Stepping Stones final at the National Championships. Issy’s mother, Hannah Norman said: “Castlehill Ka La La is very fast and years old doesn’t like to trot much but is a wise owl who knows his job and has the kindest heart. With his previous owners he jumped at Hickstead in the 138cm Winter Championship coming fifth.” Issy hopes to jump in the Graham Heaths, which are 1.05m, later this year.

Rocktels Buttons and Bows
Paige l’Anson’s grandmother bought the now 28-year-old Rocktels Buttons and Bows as a yearling for Paige’s mother to ride. The mare has proved herself a true family pony and is now competing with Paige. Paige said: “My Nan brought Rocktels Buttons and Bows as a yearling for my mum when she was younger, they competed together for many years, hunting, showing and doing a bit of everything. I have now also had the pleasure of competing Buttons for the last five years and in the last three years taking up side saddle, since when she has won many equitation and other years old side saddle classes. She is well known in the local showing world and a real character to have around. Still now at 28 she enjoys a good pony party where she can show off in front of everyone and will also beat any of our other ponies in a race out on a hack. She doesn’t take losing as an answer. She’s one in a million.”

Spring Pasture Management i
f horses and ponies have been grazing all winter, it is likely that their paddocks will be over grazed and poached. come spring, the grass will be in need of extra nutrients and a bit of maintenance work, this is normally carried out in march and april when the land is drying out and warming up.
Harrowing & Rolling
The first thing to do is harrow; this will pull out dead grasses, spread muck not picked up through the winter and level hoof marks. if the ground is bad you could do this job twice but in different ways across the fields. next is rolling, do not let it get too dry before doing this or it will be a waste of time. Finishing with Suregrow fertiliser helps to stimulate root development, resulting in a denser sward which helps suppress weed growth. Suregrow fertiliser has been developed to be slow release and low in nitrogen, avoiding lush high protein grass which can be harmful to horses and ponies.
After a long, cold winter, it is time to give your paddocks some TLC to maximise grass growth and provide improved grazing for as many months as possible. Here we talk to Jonathan Cox of Suregrow fertiliser to find out what you can do to improve the quality and condition of your paddocks.
Making Grassland Management Easy
Added Minerals
ensure your paddocks are not mineral deficient by using cSm. it is a blend of calcified seaweed, cSm is created from sustainable sources, sun dried sea salt and a natural source of magnesium. This helps makes sure your grass is of the best quality and gives it an extra boost. choose any grass seed you use carefully, a good paddock mixture should be hard wearing, quick to establish and contain the right blend for your paddock. Suregrow’s grass seed range consists of paddock grass Seed mix, Fast grass, meadow and laminitics grass mix.
Ultimate Touch owned by Davison Equestrian
Where to Sow
it is important to over sow poached or damaged areas, as these can become invaded with weeds. The grass seed can be spread by hand or drill or by a fertiliser spreader. horses and ponies are very choosey eaters and will not graze those areas where there are droppings. if possible, these should be removed on a daily or weekly basis. For more information or advice please contact Suregrow on 01423 223045 or visit www.suregrowuk.com

Best bar none
There’s now a much more scientific method of matching a bit to horse, thanks to Bombers Bits’ new mouth moulding concept.
Words by Stephen Biddlecombe
B
ombers Bits’ new mouth moulding concept aims to accurately fit a bit mouthpiece to the horse’s mouth conformation, using dental impression material that creates a replica of the horse’s bars, where the bit mouthpiece sits. During the process, an equine dental technician (eDT) opens the horse’s mouth up; Bombers Bits’ mouth moulding specialist, Sue gilliatt, then moulds the horse’s bars, using high-detail impression material set in plaster of paris. Then, a bit is collaboratively chosen.
What are the bars?
Understanding our individual horse’s bar conformation is key to bitting successfully. But what exactly are the bars? looking from the side, they are situated at the area that appears as the ‘empty space’ or interdental area between the horse’s incisor and molar teeth. The bars are sensitive areas of soft gum tissue; there’s no muscle. There are two bars below the tongue in the lower equine jaw, set around 2 to 4 cm apart, and they’re roughly the width and shape of a human finger, as you can see from the pictures (top right) of equine mouth moulds. They are essentially the bars of the mandible bone, and the dimensions or anatomical proportions actually change as the horse gets older (Ref 1). There’s only around 2 to 3 mm of soft tissue on top of the mandible bone, and the shape of the bars differs according to breed, e.g. warmblooded equines tend to have thinner bars than their coldblooded cousins. Wider bars are preferable, as they allow for more tongue relief when bitting the horse. conversely, if horse has thin, ‘sharper’ bars, the contact area between the bit and the mouth is smaller, meaning the horse may be more sensitive to the bit.
Mouth moulds showing sharp, narrow bars on the left, and the preferable wider bars on the right. Right: The bars are the area that appears as the ‘empty space’ between the horse’s incisor and molar teeth.
Bits exert pressure on some or all of the following - bars, tongue, lips and corners of the mouth.
Our horse’s mouth confirmation dictates mouth pressure
peter ‘Bomber’ nel of Bombers Bits describes the bars as follows: “The gap between the bars provides a recess for the tongue to escape bit pressure. as this becomes narrower, more of the tongue is forced to take the primary bit pressure.” it is worth considering this statement for a moment – our horse’s mouth confirmation dictates mouth pressure, even before we have chosen our bit. add into the equation asymmetry of the bar height, which can obviously create uneven contact with the rider, as they ‘feel’ the reins, (e.g. if one bar is higher than the other), as well as elements like large tongues, fleshy lips and small jaws, and it becomes clear that successful bitting has to be tailored to equine mouth confirmation.
SB Bits – Bitting expertise straight from the horse’s mouth
“I would always advocate that owners learn more about their horse’s mouth conformation…”
Pics by Julian Portch
We asked equine Dental Technician Simon pratley, who works closely with Sue gilliatt to perform mouth mouldings for Bombers Bits, what bit tends to cause the most damage to the sensitive equine bars, and he believes that it is a thick pelham. “a single jointed snaffle with a thinner ‘arms’ coming off the central joint, and wide sides reaching the cheekpiece, can also cause discomfort to the bars,” he explains. “education is key. i do let owners feel inside the horse’s mouth while i Successful am performing a check-up, if the bitting has to horse is sensible and it is safe to be tailored to do so.” equine mouth Sue plans mouth moulding visits locally, in March: email sue@giliattholdings.com Ref 1 – Mirjami Miettinen, Equine Vet at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki: ‘Sensitive equine mouth’ presentation.

A Tailor-made Parasite Testing Programme to Protect your Horse Westgate Labs has launched a new All Seasons subscription programme to simplify best practice parasite control for horse owners, here we find out more…
P
ostal worm count specialists, Westgate Labs, are delighted to launch a new subscription service to make following a best practice parasite control programme even easier for busy horse owners. The ‘All Seasons’ service is a tailor made testing programme designed to take the guess work out of managing this important aspect of horse’s health. For one simple monthly subscription payment, clients receive a bespoke plan for each horse they sign up and all the tests needed to target the right parasites at the right time of year sent direct to their door. In addition to a regular schedule of worm counts and EquiSal tests for redworm, roundworm and tapeworm, the subscription also covers any incidental tests that might be required for pinworm, lungworm or liverfluke plus resistance tests to check for drug resistance.
Celebrating 20 years
Commenting on the development, Managing Director of Westgate Labs, David Booth commented: “Since we first pioneered the idea of providing postal worm count services to horse owners twenty years ago, our aim has always been to make it as easy as possible for people to use targeted worming. The new subscription service is our latest introduction, built in response to requests from our customers. Some tell us how worried they get about making the right choices for their horses, others describe how, even with the best intentions, the gaps between testing can slip when juggling all those other pressures of work and family life.
Westgate Laboratories POSTAL WORM COUNTS & TESTS
• EASY, reliable service for parasite control, • discounts for multiple horses, • commercial rates for +10.
• SAME DAY testing & results • FREE, veterinary approved advice from our friendly SQPs
Worm life cycles
Consultant vet to Westgate Labs, Carolyn Cummins MVB Phd MRCVS commented: “The intervals for testing are recommended based on the worm life cycles we’re testing for. Often, it’s hard to tell by looking at a horse whether or not it has a worm burden so it’s incredibly important to keep up regular testing. The ‘All Seasons’ subscription service is a great cost effective way for horse owners to ensure they have this covered and any potentially harmful parasite challenges can be identified and dealt with.” Responsible horse owners know that regular monitoring using worm counts and tapeworm tests is the cornerstone of a good worming programme, only adding wormers as they are needed. This helps to slow drug resistance as well as being better for the horse and the environment. As with all Westgate’s services, free veterinary approved followup advice from their friendly experts is always available. With subscriptions starting from £6.50 per calendar month for a total test control programme the ‘All Seasons’ service is an affordable way to manage parasite control.

FEATURE
The horse tapeworm
The most common tapeworm species, Anoplocephala perfoliata, grows up to 8 cm long and has four suckers on its head which attach to the horse’s caecum and to a small region of the intestines called the ileocaecal junction. Large burdens within this narrow junction can cause significant health problems, including damage and inflammation, caecum perforation and rupture, intussusception (telescoping) of the intestine, as well as intestinal obstruction, all of which result in colic symptoms.
How to tell if your horse has a tapeworm infection
Whilst other common worms, such as redworm and roundworm infections, are detected using faecal egg counts (FEC), this method is not reliable for tapeworm infections because the eggs are released in specialised ‘packets’, resulting in poor dispersal through faeces. However, EquiSal Tapeworm - a saliva-based antibody test can be used to accurately diagnose infection (as recommended by experts in the UK-Vet deworming consensus guidelines). Saliva collection is easy to carry out using a specially designed swab which has an indicator that turns pink to tell you when you have collected enough saliva for testing. It is easy to integrate tapeworm testing into your worm control programme by simply testing at a time that you would normally consider deworming, typically in spring and autumn/winter. Table 1 shows you how to plan a suitable worm control programme using diagnostic testing to target treatments as required. A test for diagnosing encysted larval stages of redworm is not currently available so a strategic dose of moxidectin is needed during the winter months. Testing for Tapeworm in horses
Most horses in the UK have some level of worm infection, but how we manage their parasite challenge is critical to health and performance. Gone are the days of routinely administering dewormers and hoping for the best. That strategy has caused widespread resistance in worms - meaning that worms are able to survive the killing effects of dewormers and persist after treatment, which can lead to disease and in worst cases, death. To reduce the risk of further resistance occurring, we need to ensure that dewormers are only used when they are genuinely needed. Here Dr Corrine Austin, Austin Davis Biologics discusses strategies for managing tapeworm infections in horses.
What else can you do to prevent tapeworm infections?
It is important to carry out routine paddock management, such as regular muck clearance, where muck is completely removed from grazing and adjacent areas, as well as field rotation and resting where possible. Routinely clearing muck from grazing areas will significantly reduce worm contamination on paddocks and help prevent reinfection after deworming. It is also important to restrict grazing while away from home, such as at show grounds. Lastly, ensure you know your horse’s accurate weight for correctly dosing with dewormers; under-dosing can result in persistent infection and continuous egg shedding as well as increasing the risk for drug resistant worms! EquiSal saliva collection kits are available from veterinary practices and SQPs. Visit www.equisal.com for more information or to see a list of stockists.

What to do after receiving your horse’s EquiSal results
✔
Low diagnosis: There is no need to deworm horses with a low diagnosis so simply carry out your next routine test after six months to monitor for new infections. This strategy decreases the use of dewormers and therefore significantly reduces the risk of resistance emerging. Borderline or moderate/high diagnoses: We recommend that horses with either borderline or moderate/high results are treated for tapeworm using dewormers containing either praziquantel or pyrantel (at double dose). It is possible to repeat the EquiSal Tapeworm test 2-3 months after deworming to determine if treatment has been effective and whether an additional dose is required. After a first EquiSal Tapeworm test, we often find that horses have an infection despite having previously received regular deworming doses. In these cases, once or twice a year treatment has not been effective at maintaining a healthy balance and horses end up with constant infection, broken briefly by the deworming dose, only to become reinfected at a later date. In these cases, it is important to know what you are dealing with and whether to target doses more often to break the tapeworm life cycle and therefore reduce the horse’s risk of reinfection.

FEED NEWS
Feeding the Mare with Foal As longer days herald the arrival of spring, breeders will be eagerly anticipating the safe delivery of this year’s foals. Whether you are a first time or seasoned breeder it is an exciting time of year. Foals grow and develop at a remarkable rate over the first few months, most will double their birthweight over the first month of life. For the first couple of months while foals rely heavily on mares’ milk, we have limited direct control over their nutrition, unless they are creep fed. However, we can indirectly support the foal by providing a good quality, balanced diet for the mare during lactation. Nutritional demands of the mare
The nutritional demands on the broodmare are greatest during the first 2-3 months of lactation, as a 500kg mare will be producing 15-20 litres of milk a day. Broodmares will draw on their own reserves of protein, calories and micronutrients to support milk production unless they receive adequate quantities of nutrients in their diets. If your mare loses weight during early lactation it can be more difficult to get her in-foal again. Broodmare diets should be based on forage, with ad-lib good quality hay or haylage and grazing. Provided there are no issues, mares and foals should have ample turn out in well managed, appropriately sized paddocks, as exercise is a factor vital for healthy development of the foal’s musculoskeletal system. The mare’s hard feeds should be kept small and nutrient-dense with optimum levels of micronutrients to meet her needs during lactation. Basing the hard feed on a top specification stud feed balancer is the ideal solution. A cubed conditioning “blend” that is low in sugar and starch and contains good quality protein can be added to support her condition if required.
Improving milk yields
Mares’ milk is rich in lysine and the other essential amino acids required for the foal to develop a healthy musculoskeletal system. Studies have shown that inclusion of a good quality protein source (soya is the best) in the feed, will improve milk yields and foal growth. Top specification feed balancers and conditioning “blends” use soya, which is rich in essential amino acids, as the major protein source. Foals need generous quantities of calcium, balanced with phosphorous, in mares’ milk to develop tough, dense bone. Look for feeds that include good levels of calcium balanced with phosphorous in the ratio > 2:1. If you have a mare that does very well on a good quality, forage-
based, diet lactation can provide an opportunity for these mares to lose a little condition. However, it is essential that good-doers continue to receive optimum levels of micronutrients to balance their forage-based diet during lactation, even if they don’t need additional calories and protein. A top specification ‘lite’ stud feed balancer is the ideal solution.
Feeding for weaning
Most foals will start to nibble at the mare’s feed from a few days of age. It is safe for them to do this although their ability to digest fibre effectively will be limited for the first 3-4 weeks. Provided foals are growing at a steady, even rate and are in good condition there should be no need to start to creep feeding them until about a month before weaning. At this stage, gradually introduce a top specification feed balancer, so that by the time the foal is ready to wean it will happily be eating the recommended quantities of hard feed. This will avoid a check in growth around weaning. If in doubt about the best way to feed your broodmare and her foal, I would recommend that you consultant an experienced nutritionist. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi Ltd knows all about the benefits of lungeing for horses from happy hackers to top competition horses. Hilary said: “Many people think lungeing is for rehabilitation or competition horses, but think how much nicer it would be if your horse was better balanced with more core strength and moved with lightness and softness. Lungeing helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. Lungeing should encourage the horse to stretch across the back and engage his hind quarters whilst moving freely. Training aids can encourage softness and stretching whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. Good aids, like the EquiAmi lunge aid, don’t fix or restrain but encourage engagement of the hindquarters and lightness of the forehand. By moving with the horse and providing no resistance the horse has to balance instead of leaning so comes into self-carriage. Preparation for shows and club activities can be the opportunity you need to try lungeing once or twice a week. If you make it a regular part of your routine you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements you can make and how much more fun you can have.” www.equiami.com
Are you well balanced?
Intermediate Instructor Amelia Wilbourn trains people on their own horses as well as on her two mechanical horses, which are stabled just outside Hartfield in East Sussex. The mechanical horses allow Amelia to slow things down and work on particular problems riders may have experienced with their own horses. They are also great for fitness work, confidence issues and fine tuning everything for the season ahead. Here Amelia explains why it is important to maintain one’s balance when jumping and what can go wrong when you don’t. Jumping feels wonderful when you are with the horse, but when you are not can feel awkward, resulting in lack of confidence and anxiety. Shortening your stirrups closes the angles in the leg and deepens the heel for a secure lower leg, giving balance and stability to your position, allowing you to ride at a faster pace in a two point seat over undulating terrain and to fold with the horse over fences. As the horse jumps, his shoulders lift and the rider follows the movement by moving their seat backwards, closing the angle behind the knee and bringing their tummy button closer to the pommel of the saddle. The lower leg remains still and provides a stable base throughout the jump and prevents the rider from launching themselves too far forward onto the horse’s neck, whilst using their hands to balance themselves. Stand on the ground in an ‘on horse position’ with your knees bent and practice lowering yourself down into a fold, keeping your sternum over the balls of your feet and noticing how you can stay balanced, while keeping softness in the hip, knee and ankle joints, which makes them better shock absorbers. Now move your body forward and feel how you lose balance and would need to use your hands to stabilise yourself on the horse’s neck. Then move your body back and feel how you would balance by leaning on the horse’s mouth. Improving your balance and stability will help you feel more confident and enjoy your jumping. Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) can affect any horse or pony, even though we see it more frequently among high-performance horses. Some studies suggest prevalence of around 37% of leisure horses, 60% of performance horses and up to 90% of racehorses. Foals are also particularly susceptible, with around 50% of foals developing stomach ulcers, especially in times of stress. EGUS is one of the most commonly under-diagnosed condition in horses. Here Dr. S. Davidson, BVMS, MRCVS of the Sussex Equine Hospital explains what gastric ulcers are and how they can be treated.
So, what are gastric ulcers?
To understand this, we first need to understand how the normal equine stomach functions. The horse’s stomach is divided into two regions, an upper ‘squamous’ region and a lower ‘glandular’ region. The squamous region is covered by stratified squamous epithelium and lies on top of the glandular region, separated by a well-defined border called the margo plicatus. The glandular region is the region that contains and produces the stomach acid and digestive enzymes. This part of the stomach is protected by: a mucous/bicarbonate protective layer; rapid cell turnover; prostaglandins; and intracellular tight junctions. The upper squamous region does not have these protective adaptations and so is vulnerable to stomach acid. In a natural environment, the horse is designed and adapted to graze for 16-20 hours of the 24-hour day, what we call a ‘trickle feeder’. The horse’s acidic stomach contents are buffered (neutralised) by saliva produced from this regular and almost constant grazing. The horse constantly produces stomach acid (over a litre an hour) whether it is eating or not. It follows that domesticated horses that are stabled with restricted forage will be producing gastric acid and because they aren’t eating it won’t be being neutralised by the saliva so the stomach pH will start to decrease. Horses are also naturally designed to move little and often; only needing to move at high speed when evading predation. With this ‘normal’ gentle movement, the gastric acid is generally restricted to the lower glandular part of the stomach rather than the upper squamous region. Domesticated horses, however, spend less time eating (decreasing saliva production) and more time exercising (splashing the gastric contents onto the less protected squamous region). Gastric ulcers occur when the gastric acid and digestive enzymes overpower the protective factors in the stomach lining.
As you can see, these signs are vague and maybe confused with back pain, sacroiliac pain or bad behavior. Additionally, the severity of the clinical signs does not always correlate with the severity of ulcers. While we can be suspicious of EGUS, the only way to confirm, diagnose and monitor the condition is by having a gastroscope. This is relatively simple, painless procedure whereby your vet passes a three-metre-long video scope down into your horse’s stomach and visually assesses the oesophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum.
Treatment
In the past, the only licensed drug was Gastrogard (omeprazole), a proton pump inhibitor given orally, which inhibits gastric acid secretion and is highly effective in healing gastric ulcers. However, there has now been an injectable form of omeprazole licensed which requires an injection intramuscularly weekly. For some horses and owners this is more convenient than administering an oral dose daily. Total healing time is usually between two and four weeks, although severe cases can take a little longer. A full course of treatment is usually prescribed for 28 days. The horse may need to be taken out of work during this period to minimise damage to the healing tissue, but it is not always necessary. You can help to reduce the potential for gastric ulcers developing in your horse by changing the management to resemble a more natural lifestyle: • Increasing turnout and reducing concentrate feeds • Allowing free-choice access to grass or hay in the stable • Feeding more frequently to increase and prolong saliva production to help buffer the acid in the stomach • Feeding a small amount of easily digestible feed before working to act as a sponge, soaking up free gastric acid and reducing splashing onto the squamous part of the stomach • Cutting down on the use of high carbohydrate diets • Splitting the feeds into four feeds rather than two Additionally, there are feed supplements like activated charcoal and other veterinary preparations that may be of benefit. Unfortunately, if you don’t make the management changes, then it is likely EGUS will reoccur. If you have any concerns regarding your horse and EGUS then contact your vet for a consultation.

Two types of gastric ulcers
There are two types of gastric ulcers. Squamous Ulceration: The dorsal (top) region ulcerates from extended exposure to acid secretions and a lack of protective mechanism. Glandular Ulceration: The ventral (bottom) region is covered in glandular epithelium and ulcers occur here when the protective mucus layer is compromised. Research has shown causes of EGUS include exercise training, high carbohydrate diets, stress and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Bute. There is also a mechanical mechanism: when galloping the pressure from the abdomen causes the stomach to contract, pushing acid from the glandular stomach up in to the more vulnerable upper squamous stomach region.

EGUS signs
The signs of EGUS are vague and variable and this contributes to the under diagnosis of the condition. Some signs that may be noted include: • Reduced appetite or weight loss, poor performance, poor condition (including a dull coat) • Behavioural changes or an altered temperament (bucking, rearing, refusing to jump, resenting the girth being done up) • Mild or recurrent colic and or teeth grinding • Diarrhoea and cribbing • Foals may also show teeth grinding, excess salivation and excessive lying down, colicking, infrequent nursing and diarrhoea

FEED NEWS
Feed News
As spring approaches it is time to analyse whether you are feeding your horse the correct diet for the work he is doing. With that in mind we take a look at feeding for breeding, performance, the good doer and the laminitic… Mollichaff HoofKind Complete
Alltech Lifeforce Formula
Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is made from a balanced blend of high quality oat straw, dried alfalfa and fibre pellets and soya oil with added vitamins and minerals, trace elements, including magnesium and natural plant-based antioxidants, as well as added biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals. It provides a low level but high quality protein and restricted calories to give limited, controlled energy from high quality digestible fibre and oil-based ingredients, making it an excellent feed for good doers as well as those prone to laminitis. Mollichaff HoofKind Complete can be used as the sole bucket feed when fed at the recommended levels as it contains a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement. www.horsehage.co.uk
An increase in milk yield and milk energy content has been seen in mares that have been supplemented with a specific strain of yeast, thus foals received not only more milk, but that milk had a higher energy content compared with milk from un-supplemented mares. Lifeforce Formula from Alltech is specially designed for breeding horses and horses in moderate activity by supporting their immune function. Additionally, the supplement helps support the reproductive system of mares and stallions, while supporting fermentation of feeds and forages in the caecum, enabling your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all feed sources. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk
TopSpec AntiLam TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted multi-supplement designed to provide nutritional support for those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. AntiLam is used and recommended by nutritionists, vets and farriers. Most overweight ponies, and some overweight horses, are susceptible to laminitis, as are horses and ponies diagnosed with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), Insulin Dysregulation (ID) and/or Cushings (PPID). AntiLam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high fibre, very low-calorie carrier to make it palatable. Long term trials at Middle Park Laminitis Research Unit showed that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed AntiLam. It can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. www.topspec.com
Equerry High Fibre Cubes Equerry High Fibre Cubes are designed for horses and ponies at rest or in very light work, when feeding forage alone is not enough to meet your horse’s nutritional needs. Lower energy cubes are also a perfect way to provide ‘Non-Heating’ energy for excitable horses, whilst keeping them in tiptop health. They are made from a high fibre formula providing essential vitamins and minerals including magnesium and a source of protein. Equerry High Fibre Cubes are low calorie, making them ideal for good-doers and are cereal-grain free with low levels of sugar and starch. High Fibre Cubes can be soaked and are suitable for elderly horses as a hay replacer. www.equerryhorsefeeds.com
NAF Immuforte Powder When the immune system becomes compromised, it is unable to perform effectively to maintain natural good health. Indications of this can include poor condition and poor performance. Immuforte Powder provides a unique blend of nutrients to support the immune system, including Echinacea and live yeast, essential for the health of the gut based immune system. Immuforte Powder is also suitable for foals requiring additional immune support. Designed to be fed alone as and when needed, or in combination with targeted NAF products for a particular condition www.naf-equine.eu
TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ very low calorie feed that contains a multi-supplement including the levels of micronutrients and digestive aids normally only found in high quality specialised supplements. Of particular importance to elderly horses is the inclusion of micronutrients known to help maintain mobility. The scientifically recommended rate of 10 grams of glucosamine per 500kg of horse per day is a key feature of the mobility supplement included in this formula. This superb specification provides micronutrients to balance the diets of GoodDoers at rest or in light to medium work. Using TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer will help to maintain mobility and will not promote weight gain. Feeding it will help to improve hoof quality and promote a supple skin with a shiny coat. It also helps to maintain a healthy immune system and includes a highly available source of vitamin C to help maintain healthy lung tissue. www.topspec.com

TopSpec Stud Feed Balancer TopSpec Stud Feed Balancer is designed for broodmares, youngstock and stallions. The low sugar and starch formula will promote superb muscle and skeletal development without providing the excess calories which can result in overtopping. Stud Feed Balancer improves the amount of nutrients a horse can extract from his total diet (forage and concentrate) in three ways: i) The amino acids, vitamins and minerals in Stud Feed Balancer balance the deficiencies of the same nutrients in forage and straights/ blends, compared to the requirements of the horse, improving their utilisation. ii) The pure, protected yeast probiotic in Stud Feed Balancer optimises the digestion of fibre in the hindgut, allowing the horse to gain more benefit from the diet. Research has shown that the specific yeast used by TopSpec significantly improves both total feed and fibre digestibility in the horse. iii) Another useful yeast product in Stud Feed Balancer, called a prebiotic, is mannan oligosaccharides (MOS). This is a constituent of yeast cell walls. It bonds with pathogenic (bad) bacteria, removing them from the gut, leaving the beneficial bacteria free to multiply and therefore digest fibre more efficiently. This all means that breeding stock can receive optimum nutrition from reduced levels of hard feed, with many resulting benefits. Stud Feed Balancer greatly improves hoof, skin and coat quality. It also helps to maintain appetite. It moderates the effects of stress on horses and helps to maintain a healthy immune system. www.topspec.com
Equerry Cool Mix and Cubes Equerry Cool Cubes and Mix are ideal for horses and ponies in light work. ‘NonHeating’ the cubes and mix are a low energy, high fibre formula and are suitable for horses and ponies that tend to be sharp or fizzy. Both contain low levels of sugar and starch and include added vitamins and minerals including magnesium. The Equerry range of top-quality horse feeds contains something for every horse or pony, whether you are feeding youngstock, a leisure horse or a competition horse, there is a product to meet their nutritional requirements. Visit www.equerryhorsefeeds.com
British Horse Feeds Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet is a highly nutritious micronized (cooked) beet pulp feed which provides an excellent source of digestible fibre and is suitable for overweight horses and ponies, and those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. Due to its unique manufacturing process, Speedi-Beet can be soaked and ready to use in just 10 minutes and is extremely palatable. It is also starch free and unmolassed, making it 95% sugar free. Feeding Speedi-Beet before turnout can help stabilise the ingestion of sugars present in spring grass. It is also extremely versatile. It can be fed in small amounts to overweight horses as a carrier for a multivitamin and mineral supplement or in larger quantities to a poor doer for weight gain, or working and competition horses that need extra energy. Speedi-Beet has also been approved by BETA, making it suitable for horses and ponies prone to equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS). www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Baybee’s Riding School, Luxembourg founded by British Riding Instructor
Anna Skippon
www.baybeesridingschool.com Baybees Riding School Baybees.riding.school 57-Anna-lrmarch19.indd 1
Summer Camps are an amazing opportunity for children aged 7 and over to spend a week in the beautiful Luxembourg countryside, riding, learning and enjoying Baybee’s horses and ponies. The dormitories are on site and facilities are designed for comfort. The days will be jam-packed with riding and learning, filled with fun and making friends. Plus there will be displays from Luxembourg’s best riders. On site accommodation for parents too can be booked separately. Children travelling alone can be collected from the airport.

A day in the life of...
Steve Frame Eleven-year-old Izzy Frame, from Bexhill, might have a tricky pony, called Jack, to ride but she has some brilliant back up in her mum, Emma, and stepfather, Steve Frame. Steve’s dedication to her riding is allowing Izzy to overcome the obstacles Jack throws at her while out competing.
My alarm clock is set for…. 5.55am every day and weekends are no different. If it’s a weekday Izzy rides before school with Emma supervising and I do stable duties, mucking out Jack (a twelve-year-old Welsh cross who has been with us for eighteen months) and Riley (a ten-year-old Fell cross). If we’re heading out to compete, training or a ride on the beach, we start early and make sure the stables are finished before we go.
The family getting ready Izzy riding on the beach Izzy and Steve with Jack at an event
My first job of the day is… As per every day the ponies come first, it is the usual stable work before I hook up the trailer and make sure we have hay and water for the day. At some events prep starts the night before when we do a recce of the route to the show or go to walk the course, often having a pub supper on the way home.
I started going to competitions… I started going to competitions as Izzy became more involved with her riding. She loves the adrenaline of going fast, she’s not so into dressage but really likes taking part in Mounted Games with the East Sussex Pony Club (under Clare Bassett’s tutoring), where she has made some great friends and grown in confidence.
Izzy and Jack out jumping
Izzy and Jack
My main duty at a horse show is… I look after whichever pony Izzy isn’t competing on – making sure they are behaving! I’ll organise lunch and just before Izzy is due to compete I’ll go through her riding keys with her to make sure she is ready for the challenge ahead.
I’m at the show, starving hungry; so I eat… Sometimes when we’ve not taken a picnic we’ll go and see what John at Golden Cross has on the café’s menu, you know the food is good there. Or a bacon roll at Bodiam isn’t bad!
When the day goes well… We are always pleased to have Izzy safely back in one piece, as Jack can be a very difficult ride. Despite having been successful in competitions Izzy is a modest person, who is enjoying the journey of developing as a rider. And when it doesn’t go right, she never gets disheartened, or over excited when it goes well.
When a day doesn’t go well… With Jack it can go really badly. The worst was when Izzy ended up in an ambulance at a hunter trial.
When I finally get home … Days can be very long (and cold) so we don’t feel like cooking when we get back to base so we might head to McDonald’s.
What would I have done with my weekend if I didn’t have a horse competition to go to? I like motorbikes and powerlifting, when times allow, but the ponies come first of course.
