Pony Show Jumpers head to Olympia

E

ight Pony Club show jumpers have been invited to compete in the Pony Club Mini Major International Show Jumping class at Olympia the London International Horse Show on Wednesday 19th December. Each of these Pony Club members will be paired with one of the senior international riders competing at the show and the competition is run as a pairs relay with the time of the Pony Club member deciding the winner. All of the combinations competing have won a British Showjumping 128cm qualifier to earn their place at the final, apart from Katie Bradburne and Charlie Tucker, who each earned a wild card, as the best of all of those who didn’t qualify. We caught up with the three local riders heading to Olympia.

Daisy Lewis – Nefydd Becca

Daisy Lewis and Nefydd Becca qualified at the Welsh Home Pony Show

Twelve-year-old Daisy Lewis from Sevenoaks in Kent qualified for Olympia at the Welsh Home Pony Show on Spud Hatton and mother Liz Hatton’s pony, Nefydd Becca. Daisy has been enormously lucky to be able to compete two of Spud and Liz’s ponies, Nefydd Becca and Parkour 1 in the Mini Major Olympia qualifiers. The ponies are normally competed by Spud’s 10-year-old daughter, Phoebe Boocock, but as Phoebe is not a Pony Club member and therefore not eligible for the final, the family who live in Ramsgate Kent, kindly let Daisy jump the ponies in the qualifying classes. Daisy’s grandmother, Jean Clark, proprietor of Eaglesfield Equestrian Centre said: “Back in 2016, Daisy’s father, Adam Lewis, featured in Localrider in the Father Figure article. In the article it mentioned that Daisy’s dream was to one day compete in the Mini Major class at Olympia and Adam said that he wanted to help make that dream come true. When Daisy was ready to move up to a taller pony, we tried out two or three 12.2hh ponies but could not find the right one and one that we could afford so instead we purchased Tulip a 13.2hh pony, with whom she has gone on to have great success with. At that time, we felt that her dream may never come true. Then much to Daisy’s surprise she was offered a ride on two of the most incredible 12.2hh ponies owned by Spud and Liz Hatton. Daisy instantly fell in love with both ponies and felt at home riding them. Daisy’s first chance to qualify was at Pyecombe in Sussex in May where she a had the last pole down in the jump-off on Parkour I and four faults with Nefydd Becca. Daisy’s next chance was at Bicton in Devon in June where both ponies gained a clear round but Parkour I had two poles in the jump-off, but Nefydd Becca the eight-year-old home produced grey mare, tried her little heart out to come a very close second on time with a double clear. Daisy’s last chance to qualify was at the Welsh Home Pony Show in Wales in July. Both ponies jumped extremely well both gaining double clears, Parkour came fourth on time and Becca jumped an incredibly fast clear to win the qualifier. Daisy feels so very lucky to have this wonderful opportunity and we cannot thank Phoebe and Spud enough for allowing her to follow her dream. Phoebe and Spud’s excellent training at home with their ponies made it possible, as Daisy lives too far from Phoebe to ride the ponies between shows. Dreams do come true. Phoebe will be keeping Nefydd Becca fit and Daisy will ride her for training leading up to Olympia.”

en-year-old Katie bradburne is one of two finalists who were invited to compete at Olympia based on their results throughout all of the qualifiers, rather than by straight qualification. Katie jumped consistently all season, just missing out by one hundredth of a second at Pyecombe, where she finished second. Katie has qualified on her brother thomas’s pony, 17-year-old runaway Dolly. Could it be third time lucky for Katie and runaway Dolly who have won the previous two finals they have contested this year. they won the winter 10 and under style and Performance class at southview in April and the 128cm bronze League Final at the british showjumping Championships in August. the bradburne family have owned Dolly for the past six years, taking a chance on her after a fairly unusual trial in ireland. Katie’s mother, Gee said: “After Dolly won the scottish home Pony 128cm Grand Prix in scotland with thomas, we were approached by the girl now in her late teens who broke her in and had her originally. her breeding is described as a mystery, a happy mistake in the field where she was left untouched until she was seven-years-old. the girl’s trainer picked her out of several young ponies roaming around a field doing nothing and they named her runaway Dolly ‘due to her speed and lack of brakes in the early days’. she changed hands after that and we bought her from ireland. thomas was very young and quite intimidated by the whole trip over there to see her which resulted in him riding just two laps of the indoor school before i thought that was quite enough with the lack of any sort of contact with the reins, and suggested we leave it at that. we didn’t jump even a pole on the ground, but i liked her. we made an offer for her and had to wait a few weeks to hear that she was ours and she came over on the boat. never really looking back.” eleven-year-old thomas has had great success with runaway Dolly, competing at bolesworth, Liverpool, hOYs, hickstead and last year the combination finished third in the Mini Major Final at Olympia. speed is in the siblings’ blood, as their father is the Cheltenham Festival winning retired jockey, Mark bradburne and their grandmother is retired racehorse trainer, sue bradburne. Katie is currently jumping Dolly in some winter first round qualifiers which her mother Gee says are quite big, but she has also planned some more speedy rounds over smaller fences to get into the groove for Olympia. Looking to next season Katie would like to qualify Dolly for the royal international 128cm winter Final, which Dolly has done the last two years with thomas, and to qualify for hOYs.
