hilham Castle were pleased to run the first horse trials of the 2016 season through a weekend of brilliant weather. This event has run in April for four years and has developed a loyal following of competitors and spectators who come to enjoy the competition and the unparalleled setting of this beautiful parkland. Chilham had invested to create four new courses for this year, which gave riders different challenges, utilising the undulating parkland to its maximum. Francis Whittington (Team GB) said: “I’ve had a wonderful weekend. The courses are challenging and educational, the ground held out incredibly well, so the going was marvellous. It is great to be at an event where the officials and volunteers seemed to be enjoying themselves which leads to a great atmosphere.” One of the youngest riders, Imogen Stainton (15) riding Dromores Westmeath Lad came first this year in the BE 90 section B having achieved sixth in the BE 80 class in 2015. Speaking of her win, Imogen said: “I hunted all last season, which helped a lot, and had show jumping lessons from Mally Spens and dressage from Rui Campeau, who both helped me so much achieve my win this year.” The most experienced competitors definitely found the new jump in the middle of the water, very exciting. The beautifully carved crocodile was designed and carved by Steve Andrews of www.tribalanimal.co.uk. Tessa Wheeler, owner of Chilham castle and one of the Organisers said: “We could never run these events without the enthusiasm of all of our volunteers who come in rain or shine. We are looking forward now to our International Horse trials at the end of July when we will be welcoming spectators for a great weekend of outdoor sport.”
