love this time of year, the show season is in full swing and there is so much to celebrate, whether it is attending your first show or qualifying for a national championship. This month we feature readers who have done just that, plus lots more. There are 25 pages of show reports, eight pages of Regional Roundup, plus lots of other pages dedicated to local achievements. The Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May is a busy one, but an enjoyable one. I had a lovely (if slightly damp) day at the Heathfield Show on Saturday followed by a beautiful day at Surrey County on Bank Holiday Monday. It was wonderful to see many of the riders at both shows and I marvelled at the work that must go into preparing both themselves and their horses to show ring standard twice in one weekend.

Lots to celebrate Our regular reporter, Alex Kelly had a very successful weekend at both shows. Her broodmare, Middlemarch II stood Sports Horse Breeding Champion at both shows and her foal by Up With The Lark, Sandlings Wait Until Dark won on both occasions. We thought you might like to see a picture. As soon as this issue is finished I will be visiting for foal cuddles!

One young rider who is looking to make her dreams come true this summer is Olivia Moriano. Based in Surrey she rides for Italy and is currently on the short-list for the Junior European Dressage Championships, being held in Holland later this year. You can find out more about this inspiring young lady on page 8.

Royal International At this time of year our thoughts turn to the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. It is one of our favourite shows, not only because it offers five days of top equestrian competition, but because we love meeting so many of you who visit our stand. We are back in the same spot, with lots of competitions and giveaways. laire Penfold’s talented event horse, Dantastic suffered a terrible experience as a young horse that has left him with long-term physical and mental issues. Lots of time and patience from Claire and Jake Tarrant of Little Bentley Eventing alongside some help from Back on Track’s infrared technology have ensured that this athletic grey is now out competing and climbing the levels. Dantastic came over from Ireland as a young horse. After Claire bought him, she quickly discovered that all was not well with him. It was discovered that Dantastic had three broken ribs and so Claire successfully began the long road to rehabilitating the horse. Sadly, Claire then suffered an injury herself and so sent Dantastic to Jake’s yard to continue the horse’s journey to recovery. Jake who is a qualified BHSAI Riding instructor has a reputation for taking on problem horses and treating them with kindness and patience. He said: “When the saddle was put on Dantastic he would get very tense under it and not want to go forward.” It has taken plenty of time to get Dantastic both physically and mentally well again. The Weald of Kent Ploughing Match Horse Show takes place on Saturday 16th September. This year’s horse show will be positioned close to the ‘main ring’ and ‘farmers market’ so that competitors and their families can enjoy the whole Ploughing Match ‘Country day out’ experience. news Looking for new homes Pussy Cat Lodge have a number of cats looking for new homes. Ivy, was living rough in a pub garden. She survived from titbits given to her by the customers. When she arrived at Pussycat Lodge, she had a sore nose and leg. This was put down to a bad diet and surviving outside. Now she is fit and healthy and well after having rested. She is now looking for a lap to curl up on and dream away. Cynthia is about nine-months-old. She was found heavily pregnant walking the streets at night by a busy road. She must have been owned at one time as she is the friendliest of cats. She is a beauty, so dainty and has a lovely nature. All her kittens have now been rehomed. Cynthia would make an ideal family pet. Wilma is a beautiful tortoise shell and white female, who is approximately a year old, and her black 12-week-old son Shadow, just love each other. She has been a fantastic mum to her five kittens who have all been rehomed now. All of the cats at Pussycat Lodge have been vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and neutered. wenty clients of Lingfield Equine Vets enjoyed a fun and informative day on the track on Wednesday 31st May, as part of their series of Fitness Clinics. under the watchful eye of Maggie Pattinson, Chef D’Equipe of the England Home International Endurance squad, they took to the track in groups of four and were put through their paces using heart rate monitors and simple techniques such as frequent changes of diagonals and lateral movements to get the horses (and riders!) working. From endurance horses and eventers to carriage horses, as well as Olga the Ardenne, Maggie demonstrated the importance of fitness to suit each horse’s demands, before heading back to the horsebox park to learn about the importance of cooling-off and the use of electrolytes. The horses were all weighed on the practice’s portable weigh bridge before and after exercise, with some horses showing significant weight loss of up to 14 kilos. Maggie also shared some of her amazing experiences as official coach and trainer for the Mongol Derby entrants (a race across 1000km of Mongolian Steppe which draws riders from across the world).

SPOTLIGHT Olivia Moriano and Worldy Wise, the combination are currently short-listed to represent Italy at the Junior European Championships.

European Dreams Surrey-based dressage rider Olivia Moriano has been short-listed to represent Italy at the Junior European Dressage Championships in Roosendaal, Holland this summer. Fiona Rafferty chatted to Olivia the day before her last A’Level examination to find out what the future holds for this driven teenager…

Roosendaal and Hickstead In just three weeks after her last exam Olivia will hear if she has made the Italian squad (Olivia has dual nationality as her father is Italian) for the Junior European Dressage Championships with her fabulous Weltmeyer gelding, Worldly Wise. If luck is on their side they will be heading to Roosendaal in Holland for the European Championships. Which takes place the week after the combination head to the Hickstead CDI for the Junior FEI competition. Olivia remains optimistic about joining the Italian squad in Roosendaal, but accepts as the only UK based rider on the short-list she has been at a disadvantage this year. As due to her studies she has been unable to travel to Europe, to compete and as a result has only competed in one international competition, the Keysoe CDI, whereas the other riders on the list have competed at two international events.

Discovering dressage Olivia fell in love with dressage when she was eight-years-old. Her then pony, Gemswood Morning Star aka Jack, proved too much for her to handle in the show jumping arena and she turned to dressage. Olivia said: “I won many local championships at Prelim and Novice level, later being selected for the BYRDS Southern team as a Fledgling. We came eighth out of 30 competitors in our first

Southern representation, which gave me a glimpse of the feeling of success and competitiveness.” In 2011 Olivia’s mother found her a new competition pony, Master Alexander, who had been bred and trained in Holland. The combination competed in many competitions progressing from Novice to Advanced Medium. Olivia said: “In the winter of 2012, we were selected to be on GB pony national training over the winter and in 2013 we were reselected. This led to the opportunity to attend GB squad selection at the start of 2014. This was an amazing achievement as a 13-year-old. In 2014, I was chosen to represent the English Southern BYRDS team at the Home Internationals, where we came second at Medium level.”

Representing Italy Due to her dual nationality, Olivia was invited to represent Italy at pony FEI level. After gaining her two qualifying score sheets Olivia was chosen to represent Italy at her first CDI competition at Addington Manor in March 2015. Olivia and Master Alexander aka Rikki finished in the top 20 in all three classes, competing against previous European champions. Sadly, due to her age this was Olivia’s last year in pony classes, but Rikki remains a family favourite and has a home for life.

Training in Germany At the beginning of 2016 Olivia started riding Worldy Wise aka Will, who was at the time owned by Sally-Anne Hoyle, Olivia’s family have since bought him from Sally-Anne. Previously ridden by David Trott, Sally-Anne bought Will, who was bred and trained by Ulla Salzgerber, as a four-year-old. livia Moriano is bright, ambitious, successful, passionate about her horses and at just 18-years-old has her short-term goals and plans mapped out. I spoke to Olivia the day before her very last A’Level examination for English Literature and Language. She had already sat exams for Economics, as well as Government and Politics and if all goes to plan she hopes to have a jam-packed full gap year, before taking a place at the London Institute of Banking & Finance to study Banking Practice & Management.

the way, Olivia said she needed to start practising her dressage to music for the CDI at Hickstead. She has some great music which includes tracks from the films ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘The Holiday’. However, Olivia admits to never having ridden to music before the CDI at Keysoe earlier in the year and hastily put together a floor plan, but now with the chance she may be in the top 15 going through to the Kur at Hickstead, she plans to perfect her moves. Talking of her first attempt, Olivia said: “I loved it, it was an absolute buzz and I can’t wait to do it again.”

Lots of support Olivia acknowledges the support she receives from her parents. Her mother comes from a horsey family and rode up to Medium level and whilst her father isn’t horsey, he enjoys competitive sport, particularly

football and Formula One. The latter being something Olivia enjoys watching with him. Olivia is also fortunate to be sponsored by Stivali Romitelli Shoes, Kudu Equestrian, Neue Schule Bits and eGlove. Chatting about her experiences so far, Olivia said: “Dressage is a very rewarding sport and I learn something new every day. The sport has given me so many memorable moments to treasure forever.” Olivia is equally as passionate as she tells me about her teaching, something she plans to do more of during her gap year. She is delighted to share the news that one of her clients, Vicky Benster, who has a lovely Fresian horse, recently won her first Elementary with a score of 71%. Whilst her current focus is on the Junior European Championships, Olivia’s longer term goals include representing Italy at Olympic level.

The Bookham winning Senior 80cm Team saw a number of combinations brushing off the cob webs to compete in a one day event for the first time in a long time. Jackie Stevens was delighted at finishing sixth individually at only her second event on her ex-racehorse, Gigawatt.

Team member Nicola James scored an impressive 17.25 in her dressage arena and said she is going to frame her sheet. All the team members were delighted for Junior Member, Pippa Haslam, who was eliminated at this event last year, but put that behind her to win both the 80 Junior Qualifier and as an individual. Speaking for the team, Lauren said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bookham cannot wait to go to both Munstead for the London and South East finals and Swalcliffe for the Nationals!â&#x20AC;?

Dropping your hat, allowing it to roll around in the car etc can cause damage to the shock absorbing polystyrene liner.

Keep your hat cool

Your riding hat should be stored in a cool environment and not be exposed to direct heat for drying or placed in direct sunlight under glass such as the back shelf of the car. This is because heating your hat to 70 degrees centigrade and above will break down the protective materials used in construction of your riding hat, especially the polystyrene liner, and this will gradually reduce the level of protection it offers. A protective hat bag is the ideal way to store your hat when not being used to ensure the right conditions are maintained and to provide cushioned protection. If you have an accident in your hat it is important that you always replace your hat and if you have any concerns that your hat might be damaged, replace it. There should be no compromise where head safety is concerned.

ictoria joyce’s eight-year-old al Khawaneej stood overall Champion in the thoroughbred & Retired Racehorse classes. the former flat horse ran eight time, winning three races, as well as finishing second at Royal ascot before coming out of training due to injury. his first new home after racing was with a lady who hunted him, but she quickly realised that he was far too special to hunt and Victoria has owned and ridden him for the last 18 months. earlier in the day Victoria and al Khawaneej were second in the lightweight hunter class, booking their place at the Royal international. Victoria plans to show the striking gelding in more lightweight hunter classes in the future.

the Reserve Championship in the thoroughbred & Retired Racehorse classes went to Zoe gould and the nine-year-old Musical legend. the combination won the Retrained Racehorse Challenge, which involves jumping eight rustic fences, in addition to the normal show ring display. it is not surprising Musical legend enjoyed showing with fences as the combination recently won their first ever Novice event, qualifying for the Novice Regional finals at gatcombe in august. Zoe said: “My mum and i bought Musical legend from the ascot sales as a four-year-old in december 2012, and he had raced on the flat the week before. he’s taken a while to fully mature physically and is a very sensitive soul with a heart of gold, so we’ve taken our time with him and the benefits are now really starting to show. he won his first dressage competition in 2013 so that was a good start. he started eventing in 2014 and he was a natural, although the show jumping has taken a bit of time and patience to build up confidence in himself.”

Naughty racehorse finds his niche another successful horse in the ex-racehorse classes was Karen jewell’s eight-year-old, Kingscombe. the combination won the in-hand class and were second in the ridden class to Victoria joyce. Karen’s mother linda runs a racing yard in Kent and Kingscombe, who is owned by Peter oppenheimer, came to them as a three-yearold in 2012 and went on to win six races on the all-weather track at southwell. Karen said: “Kingscombe didn’t take to jump racing. he was a rather naughty racehorse and had to do a couple of stalls tests. we think at 17.2hh he just felt too big, so we decided to retire him. By this point he had become a yard favourite here and Peter has always wanted to keep him to do RoR with. he finished his last race last May and he managed to qualify for the RoR final at hickstead, just three months after he stopped racing. we are trying to promote how great RoR horses are and hope that his success will encourage more people to rehome them.” Danielle French and Ueejit, first Heavyweight Hunter

Tesremos ponies on form Jane Somerset had a brilliant Heathfield Show with her two homebred Connemara mares. They are both out of Jane’s great mare, Falfield Honeybear. The 10-year-old Tesremos Top Bear is by Tiercel Top Cat and the seven-year-old Sunny Bear is by Bunowen Castle Ri. Tesremos Top Bear won the In-Hand Connemara class, before standing Reserve Mountain & Moorland Champion, while Tesremos Honeybear won the Large Breeds Ridden Mountain & Moorland class, before taking the Ridden M&M Championship. Talking of Top Bear, Jane said: “I love riding her, she is so smooth and easy, and has a wonderful temperament.” Jane said she won a lot in-hand when she was younger, but she just saves her for a few shows a year now. When asked if she would breed from her in the future, Jane said: “I might breed from her and I would like to use Glencarrig Marble (he stood second and Reserve Champion with Samantha Fowler), but I love riding her too much at the moment.”

oung jockeys, Owen Lewis and Minty Bloss owned the racecourse at Plumpton on Sunday 14th May for the Pony Racing Association South East Finals. Minty and Nook Class Act had the edge over Owen and Little Chick in the 138cm Final, while in the 148cm Final Owen was first to cross the line on board Bongo Bay, with Minty hot on his heels with Roy Boy Green. All of the riders taking part in the finals at Plumpton, which took place on Ladies Day, the last raceday of their season, had qualified through the South East Point to Point series. Riders who finished first or second in the Open Pony races at South East Point to Points qualified to take part in the final. Each point to point meeting also includes a race for non-racing ponies. These can be hunting or Pony Club ponies and the series offers a great stepping stone for those who are considering taking part in pony racing. Prior to their first race young jockeys must qualify in one of three ways. They can do this by attending four Pony Club rallies, hunting four times or by attending a Pony Racing Association accredited training day. Exciting Year Ahead for

The Arundel Equine Hospital

any years ago we recognized that we need to expand our hospital and the quest began to find a new site to relocate to. It took a long time to find a suitable location, but we were very fortunate to be able to buy a farm and get permission to demolish the existing buildings allowing us to invest in the building of a brand new, purpose built hospital. This large investment in the practice will allow us to provide our clients and patients an even better level of care.

Why are we building a new hospital? The Arundel Equine Hospital is one of the oldest dedicated equine practices in the country, it was founded in 1951 by Mike Ashton. The current hospital was developed on the existing site, because for years one of the biggest clients for the practice was the racehorse trainer based at Arundel Castle. Due to the number of horses and the limitations of diagnostic technology at that time, the clinic needed to be close to the racing stables for horses to be dealt with. Time has moved on, there is no longer a trainer at the Castle and with the progression of diagnostic and therapeutic technology it now means that we can do so much with horses in an ambulatory fashion, in their home stables. As such we feel that we can now move the hospital to a new location, one that is a little more central to the area covered by the practice and one with a much better road network for horse box access. Not only do we want to move due to geographic concerns, we have reached a point where the current site is too small for the existing numbers of staff. It is also too small for us to develop the new services that we want to provide to our patients and clients.

Where is the new hospital located? The new hospital will be located on the B2133, just half a mile off the A24 outside Ashington.

The Arundel Equine Hospital

What services will be provided in the new hospital? We currently provide a huge number of specialist equine veterinary services, but with the new hospital it will mean that we will be able to have the space to put in an MRI and a CT scanner. The MRI scanner will be the first new diagnostic unit to go in, this will allow us to perform standing MRI images. The next phase of the development will be the CT scanner. As well as the new services, we will also have more stables, a smart new surfaced arena and purpose built lameness examination areas. There will be a pleasant client waiting area and meeting rooms where the clinicians can sit quietly and go through the cases that come in with owners. The office space will be massively expanded, as will the lab and the pharmacy that we currently have. There will be a conference room where we plan to hold a series of client information evenings.

What will it mean to clients who find themselves further away from the hospital as a consequence of the move? The ambulatory care of the equine patients in the practice will not change when we move. The vets will still attend yards as they do now and we will still have our van buzzing around from yard to yard with all the digital diagnostic equipment such as x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy. The only difference will be a box journey of a different length in the unfortunate circumstance when a patient needs to come into the hospital, however getting to the new clinic will be so much easier due to accessibility.

What will the new hospital be called? A decision has been made to change the name of the practice to The Sussex Equine Hospital, we will have a smart new logo too.

When will the project be completed? The building work is well on track, Rob van Pelt has been driving things forward at a rapid rate and we are moving into the new hospital so that it will be functional on 24th July.

wimming racehorses has many benefits and is becoming increasingly popular in horseracing. Not only does it add variety to a horse’s training regime, many find it an enjoyable experience especially in this hot weather. The water provides buoyancy, which relieves pressure on joints, bones and ligaments. It also provides enough resistance to ensure a thorough workout. This means that swimming can aid both muscular development and maintains cardiovascular fitness. We spoke to Colin Gorman, Assistant Trainer, who works for racehorse trainer Tom Dascombe based at Manor House Stables in Malpas, Cheshire. Their Equine Swimming Pool was built in 2011 and has made a big difference to their training regime. Colin said: “Every horse in our yard swims regularly. We teach horses to swim when they are yearlings and so it becomes part of their daily routine. They would be warmed up on the horse walker and then bought to the swimming pool to swim around five laps each way. Most of them find it relaxing and enjoyable especially if they have small injuries or are recovering from an injury. It helps maintain their fitness without putting pressure on their joints and back and is a beneficial alternative to being ridden. The horses are led down a ramp which gradually gets deeper until they reach around three meters and they can start to swim. We have a member of staff on each side of the horse’s head to guide it round the pool. It is a horse’s basic instinct to swim and the swimming pool is concaved so they don’t bang their legs on the sides. We train all our Head Grooms to swim horses and so it becomes part of their daily job role. They find it interesting and it is another skill to add to their CV.” Many racehorse trainers are adding swimming pools to their training facilities because of the benefits they bring. Both circular and straight swimming pools designs are seen both in the UK and overseas.

Equine Programmes at Merrist Wood College Merrist Wood College has one of the largest equine centres in the South East. Canny Coat Colour Words by Stephen Biddlecombe, Retailer

Every horse has a black, bay or red (chestnut) base colour, although greys are a result of a grey gene.

ave you ever given your horse’s coat colour a second thought? According to Animal Genetics UK, who offer DNA typing, every horse has a black, bay or red (chestnut or brown) base colour. This is controlled by genes called ‘Extension’ and ‘Agouti’ genes. The Extension gene controls the production of black or red pigment throughout the coat, and the Agouti gene can modify black pigment; this can include creating black ‘points’ (mane, tail, lower legs, ear rims), for example, a bay, or altering black colour uniformly over the body. The effects of approximately 10 other genes may modify these pigments to provide an array of colours. ‘Colour’ genes act as modifiers on the base coat of the horse, ‘diluting’ the colour, while ‘pattern’ genes modify the coat colour by effectively ‘deleting’ colour. The website animalgenetics.com has a colour calculator, whereby you can input sire and dam coat colour, to see a probability (in percentage) of the offspring’s coat.

Any breed, any colour

In a recent feature by the College of Veterinary Medicine at America’s University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, equine surgeon Dr. Annette McCoy, says that in theory, any breed can be any colour. She states that the grey gene ‘trumps’ everything else, so a horse can be born any colour, but if one or both parents pass on a dominant grey gene, the horse will turn grey by adulthood. Therefore, completely grey animals are a result of the grey gene, while ‘greying’ due to age is just representative of the ageing process. Interestingly, the PRE studbook, which covers Purebred Spanish Horses, even has a relatively new clause including all colours of horse, meaning that previously ‘outlawed’ chestnuts are now admitted. The magazine ‘Nature Genetics’ reported recently that modern horses have seemingly ‘lost’ the camouflage which pre-historic horses had; nearly 1,800 horses were studied, more than half of which were Icelandic. (Available at nature.com). Icelandic scientist, Freyja Imsland, described that, (although black, bay or red-bases are the base colours), colouring of early horses was probably dominated by the dun-gene, e.g. producing a grey-gold or tan coat hue, with a dorsal stripe and a darker mane and tail, and a darker face and legs. “Other equine colour variations are believed to have emerged only after humans tamed horses,” she stated. july/august 2017 Localrider 27

Harry Charles, aged 17, from Alton, Hampshire, flew the flag for Great Britain triumphantly in Wierden, The Netherlands on Saturday 10th June, winning Junior Grand Prix on his father Peter’s chestnut gelding Vivaldi du Dom.

Last to go in the jump-off, Harry had watched some of the first ones go and decided on the strategy he was going to take as a result. Talking it through he said: “I had watched a couple go and I could see that there was room for me to take a stride out between the first two fences. I was going in for a win, so knew I had to be fast, but felt confident as my horse is so careful. I managed to save a bit of time going forward and taking a stride out where I could. The jump-off course suited us as it had a good distance between fences and Vivaldi has a good forward pace so it worked out well for us.” Stopping the clock in a time of 37.74 seconds, Harry was the only rider to break the 39 second barrier on which he commented: “As I came to the finish line I knew I had been fast so wouldn’t be far off the current leader, but it wasn’t until afterwards that I realised I had managed to shave more than two seconds from their time.”

The 1.40m Grand Prix course asked a lot of its 86 starters, with only twelve of them managing to jump clear in the first round. Not only was the time allowed tight resulting in many combinations incurring time penalties, but it was also up-toheight and technical, asking many questions of both horse and rider. Within the group of twelve that qualified for the jump off was current Pony European Champion Jack Whitaker (GBR) on Emilie Machon and Michael Potters grey stallion Valentin R who finished in eventual sixth place.

n a glorious sunny day at Crofton Manor Equestrian Centre near Fareham in Hampshire, Katherine Wright stormed to victory in the Horseware Bronze League Qualifier after delivering an exceptional treble clear. The focus for each of the 33 competitors was securing one of the three coveted qualification spots available for the Horseware Bronze League Semi Finals, which will run in August. Two closely fought rounds saw just six combinations remain to go head to head against the clock to decide the winner. Katherine Wright from Lymington, Hampshire jumped into top spot with her own nine-year-old brown mare, Adelaide II. Over the newly shortened course, this pair combined their consistency with a turn of speed to achieve a treble clear in 43.10 seconds. Scooping second place was Gayle White from Bordon, Hampshire as she delivered a treble clear on board her own 10-year-old chestnut gelding, Easy Choice. This combination crossed the finish line in 48.73 seconds. Jacqueline Menzies from Horsham, West Sussex took the final qualification spot on offer with her own 15-year-old grey gelding, Sultan V. This partnership finished with a treble clear in a time of 49.16 seconds.

Ian Davies announces the launch of his new farriery business

an Davies has recently set up his new farriery business in Marlborough. Ian is a registered farrier with over 25 years’ practical experience. During this time he has worked as the chief farrier to the Saudi Royal family, Northern Farm in Japan and the Sultan of Oman. Ian has worked with thoroughbred and Arab racing businesses, studs and bloodstock producers, working with foals, yearlings and youngsters, mares and stallions. Ian says: “I was also lucky enough to hold the post of farrier to the Saudi National showjumping team during my time abroad and worked with an amazing team.” He added: “As chief farrier at Northern Farm, Japan, I managed over 2,000 horses, including those in and out of training, 18 stallions and a team of 16 farriers, so I can comfortably say my experience has been extensive. Each role gave me unique opportunities to experiment with techniques and work with renowned remedial and repair products, including Dr Coles, Redden, Akita and Eustace.”

He has seen the incredible results gained from taking x-rays of horses before and after any acts of farriery, which whilst he appreciates is not common practice in many yards, he has benefited from this unique learning opportunity.

Ian has also studied and qualified in barefoot trimming techniques and explored the holistic approach behind this practice. He says: “Studying barefoot techniques gave me a new view on farriery. I absolutely adhere to the need to give the best care for each individual horse, its workload and its environment. I remain openminded and I believe I can come up with the most favourable outcome for each horse, whether shod or barefoot.” Now back in the UK, Ian is starting up in business again and is ready to work with new clients. His services encompass both traditional and barefoot farrier services. He will be covering the Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire areas predominately but is happy to travel! James Rogan said: “The Fallowbrook show is a fun experience and you can learn a lot from it. I like to win rosettes, so I practise loads and try really hard.”

Fallowbrook’s Little Britches day took place at Easter, with over 20 children and ponies enjoying an action-packed day at Team Tutsham’s fabulous arena in West Farleigh. The day started with some barrel racing with a chance for all levels of rider, from lead rein to serious cowboys, to try their hand at this traditional western event. There followed more games such as the keyhole race and finally a relay egg and spoon race on horseback. There were rosettes for all and fabulous chocolate bunnies for the winners in each section. The day was supervised by Fallowbrook’s Chairman, David Brimson, a Level 1 UKCC coach and successful reining competitor and Fallowbrook’s Youth Coach, Louise Hunt. All Fallowbrook coaches have received specific training in working with children and have first aid qualifications and a DBS check to ensure the events are run in a professional but kid friendly atmosphere. Fallowbrook Western Riding Club is an independent, not for profit community club and has received funding and support from Kent Sport and Sport England. eresa and Andrew Kingsley’s beautiful coloured mare has featured regularly in Localrider over the last few years, celebrating her great success in the in-hand show ring. When deciding to breed from her the Kingsley’s chose Bathleyhills Monet. Teresa said: “We were struggling to find the right stallion, but his temperament is brilliant and we both decided he was the right one.” Star’s dam was called Doylan Little Treasure, which is exactly what Seren is too. Born at 4.10 am on the Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May, Andrew spent 31 nights sleeping in their lorry at the yard, to make sure he was there at the right moment.

Caroline Sheehan’ s three-year-old Collstone Principal Lord won the In-hand Mountain & Moorland Large Breeds Youngstock class at Herts County Show at the end of May. The good-looking Highland had a busy weekend, as he also stood second at Surrey County in the Open age Highland In-hand class and won the award for the highest placed youngstock in that class. Caroline bought Monty as he is known at home in spring 2016. She plans to continue his in-hand career, bringing him out under saddle in 2018. aving stopped riding on a regular basis when she got married in 1982, Amanda Adams recently bought herself a young horse called Carrowkeel Joey aka Joey, who has proved the perfect equine partner and together they have been enjoying going out and about, and recently completed the East Kent Ride. Amanda said: “I bought Joey in August 2016 from Linda Jewell the racehorse trainer, who is based in Ulcombe. She imported Joey from Ireland and backed him. He is a purebred, but over height (15.1hh), four-year-old old Irish Connemara. I rode as a child and was lucky enough to have a couple of ponies, but when I got married in 1982 I gave up keeping horses as children came along and then grandchildren. I occasionally rode friends’ ponies and horses and always felt a little twinge of envy when I watched others compete or box up for sponsored rides and the like. At 54 I really began to think my riding days were over, but to cut a long story short I decided to have one more horse in my life. I mentioned to my friend Nicky who used to run a riding stables in Headcorn that I intended to find a ‘been there’ done it sort of horse and between us we lined up a day of looking at a few. Joey was the wildcard as he was only four and needed bringing on, however it was love over the stable door. He was such a character and Linda said he was exceptionally laid back. After a very kicky canter round their gallops I said yes please and brought him home. My husband although not initially very keen on my new venture decided Joey was okay as his friendly nature is disarming. I started from scratch with the help my amazing friend Tamara who let me use her school and coached me through lots of basics. There were a few bucks, but Joey loved his work. He was soon hacking out with the other horses and loving every minute of it. After lots of pole work and exercises he is starting to jump and we recently attended our first event the East Kent Sponsored Ride. He didn’t put a foot wrong, we took the jumps a little fast, but he was happy to try everything. I intend to try a walk and trot dressage test next so we are in training. I want him to do a little of everything and grow old with me, I’ve worked out that by the time I am 60 he will be nearly 10 so at 70 he will be 20, I will be like the queen hopefully riding into my nineties! He is five in June and I intend to have a party with a few horses and a few friends to celebrate my lovely Snowy Joey as the grandkids call him.”

Harry continues his winning form West Kent Sevenoaks Pony Club member Harry Scott was on winning form with his pony Seren Benfro at the inter-branch One Day Event competition hosted by the Mid Surrey Branch of the Pony Club. 11-year-old Harry won Section A of the 70cm event finishing on an outstanding dressage score of 14.37%. His closest rival in second place finished on 30%. Harry and his New Forest pony, Seren Benfro, were also part of the winning West Kent Sevenoaks Team, which included, Lily-May Parker on Rusheen Fairy, Eliza Crane on Go Diego Go and Archie Humfrey on Leo. Harry’s family bought Seren Benfro for the then nine-year-old Harry at the end of 2015 and last year the combination competed in five Pony Club 60cm one day events, finishing in the top three each time. Their aim this year is to qualify for the Pony Club Regional Dressage Championships (formerly Grassroots) again at Keysoe. They qualified last year but, coming third in their arena, missed the ride off for overall individual placings by 0.5%. They also hope to move up to Pony Club 80cm competitions by the end of the season. In September Harry will be starting at Sevenoaks School and he hopes to join the riding team and compete in the NSEA competitions. Seren Benfro is no stranger to the pages of Localrider, having previously featured with Zara Staples when the combination won the BE80 at Littleton Manor, and also with Josh Hill, who produced the gelding as a young pony. Para Reining in Kent

ara Riders raised the roof over the Bank Holiday weekend at the first ever Para Reining competition in the UK, held at Bodiam International in Kent. Riding horses they hardly knew, in a new discipline in front of a huge crowd, the riders demonstrated their exceptional skills producing fluent and accurate patterns. On day one Fiona Durston, a 3* dressage rider from Kent, who is registered blind, took the top place ahead of former Team GBR Dressage member and individual Paralympic Silver medallist Ricky Balshaw. A delighted Fiona said: “I have had a whirlwind week, a crash course in a new sport and I have loved every second of it! I could never have imagined winning on the first day, and am really excited to be trying to qualify for Holland. I can’t wait to see what the future might bring.” Balshaw, back in the saddle for the first time after retiring from dressage exactly a year ago, placed second, after just two

days of practice. Sir Lee Pearson, 11 time Paralympic Gold medallist came in third, finding the change of saddles to be quite the challenge, whilst swapping 17 hand Olympic Champion Zion to a 15 hand quarter horse mare. Pearson said: “What a wonderful introduction to the Para Reining. Great atmosphere, great competition, and most of all great horses.” Day two and the challenge was on, not just for the riders to beat each other, but also to post high enough scores to qualify for the Para Reining World Championships in Holland this July. With only four days left before the entry deadline the riders had no room for error. This time it was Pearson who set the bar, pulling an exceptional run out of the bag on a new horse, Smart Like Valentino. Balshaw, providing the audience with an exceptional sliding stop was a mere half a point behind, the smallest margin in a competition judged by three International Judges. Durston banked a safe run on Big

Step Moonlight, ensuring her qualification for Holland. Balshaw said: “I feel privileged and honoured to have been part of the first ever Para Reining Competition in the UK. I am very excited to be qualified for the World Para Reining in Holland and can’t wait to compete in another World Championship in a new sport.” Organiser Francesca Sternberg was completely delighted at the success of the event, noting the large crowd that it attracted, as well as an overwhelming interest online and throughout the social media network. “These riders have showcased their exceptional talents in an outstanding demonstration that proves Reining and horses can open doors for so many people with disabilities. I look forward to seeing the competition at the Para World Reining event in five weeks and feel confident that our riders will be very competitive and as always a huge credit to Great Britain.”

Mary Howden said she had waited six years to win a Mountain & Moorland class in good company on her Welsh section C, Ellie. Mary has owned the now 13-year-old Ellie for seven years and said it has taken time and patience along the way. This year Mary decided to enter some jumping and working hunter classes with Ellie. Mary said: “I’ve been fortunate to be having lessons from a fab instructor called Louise Lucas, who encourages us without pushing us too far, as we want our jumping experience to be an enjoyable one. Ellie is enjoying her jumping, there is still lots to learn, but she is trying her best. I think it must be about 30 years since I last competed in any jumping classes and I never thought I would be doing it again, but I am really enjoying it.” Their first experience was at the Horley Lions Show and whilst it didn’t all go to plan, they jumped round clear in the clear round ring. They are looking forward to putting in lots of practise before their next show at the end of July.

Captain Darling wins with elegance at Petley

n Good Friday, 14th April 2017, Cranleigh RDA Group held their Annual Sponsored Ride, on a lovely dry Spring day. Over 200 riders came to enjoy a choice of two distances, 11 miles through woodland glades, expansive heathland, sandy tracks and sunken roads; or a new three-mile route for led or accompanied riders through bluebells and fresh green foliage. This year is the Group’s 50th Anniversary and it is fitting to announce that the Sponsorship given was the highest amount ever! The total raised was over £14,500 including Gift Aid. WOW!! The winner of the most money raised in the under 18-years competition was five-year-old Cameron Graves, who was on her first ever Sponsored Ride and raised £261 including Gift Aid. The winner of the over 18 category was Mary Stokes a volunteer with Cranleigh RDA Group, who raised £266 including Gift Aid. The Group is particularly proud of two riders who regularly ride with support from Cranleigh RDA, Kerstin and Edward, who both practised for several weeks so that they could ride the three-mile route on two RDA ponies. A great achievement which thoroughly deserved the support of friends and family, raising over £4,000, thanks to the dedication of Edward’s father, Wayne. All this is why Cranleigh RDA Group would like to give a huge Thank You, to the landowners and estate managers who graciously allowed the Ride to take place; to the volunteer marshals who gave up their Good Friday to enable the event to run smoothly and safely; and to all the wonderful riders and their sponsors, who raised so much money for this charity. All the money will go towards the day to day running costs for the Group, to enable those, for whom life can be a challenge, to benefit from and enjoy the therapy and thrill of riding and being with ponies. Lisa Bates and Captain Darling winning the Concours d’elegance at Petley Equestrian

Lisa Bates re-homed the now five-year-old Captain Darling three years ago, after he was rescued from a flooded field where he had been left. Backed last year, the pair started training with Alison Short and Lisa describes him as a very willing student. The combination has had great success in the dressage arena, repeatedly scoring over 70 percent. It was their first time in the show ring at Petley Equestrian, but Captain Darling took it all in his stride, even though Lisa was wearing a dress for the Concours d’elegance, winning two classes. Lisa said: “He is an easy pony to do and took no notice that I was wearing a dress for the Concours d’elegance which had taken me more than three weeks to sew.” Lisa continued: “Later in the year were hoping start competing in dressage to music classes and we are looking forward to competing at the Sunshine Tour Championships.” JULY/AUGUST 2017 Localrider 33

He later went on to stand Overall Mountain and Moorland Champion. Ethan is seven-years-old and has been riding intermittently for two years. Cheryl teaches Ethan and home produces TomTom.

Twelve-year-old Rafe Storm and his pony, Danny, had a successful day at the Cowdray Hunt Pony Club Show. Having won their height section of the Working Hunter, they went on to stand Supreme Working Hunter Champions. Rafe who is a member of the Lord Leconfield branch of the Pony Club has owned Danny for almost three years and he is his first pony. The combination enjoy taking part in all Pony Club activities as well as local shows. REGIONAL ROUNDUP Rhos Exception takes the Cuddy Supreme Rhos Exception enjoyed a glittering career under saddle for her owner-breeder Jill Godden. Produced by Team Harvey and ridden by Ellis Taverner-Burns the 138 cm Riding Pony was last seen in the ring standing ridden Show Pony Champion of the Year at HOYS. The nine-year-old mare by Derwent Rainbow Bandit out of Rhos Eloquence has made a wonderful start to her new career as a broodmare with Jill overseeing the production at home. Shown with her smart filly foal by Whiteleaze Democrat at foot for the first time at Midland County Show, Rhos Exception put on a sparkling display when led by John Harvey, to win in the Part bred Arab Championship and to get the nod from judge David Bartram to win the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand Championship and rebooking her place at HOYS. Rhos Exception followed up her Midlands victory by standing Riding Pony Breeding Champion at the South of England Show.

Stage Music West Sussex based owner breeder Virginia Russell-Wood’s ten-yearold broodmare, Stage Music, was the winner of the Cuddy Supreme in-hand at the South of England Show. Produced from home and led by Jeff Grace, the daughter of Chestnut Park All That Jazz made her in-hand début in 2016 when she attended three shows, standing Champion PBA at Kent County, Supreme In-Hand at the BSHA and Supreme PBA. South of England was her first show of the 2017 campaign with her filly foal, Stage Diva, by Tiger Attack, at foot, she was handled by Simon Luck. Virginia and her team have been on form as Stage Song out of Stage Whisper by Kilvington Scoundrel won the Riding Pony Breeding Championship at Surrey County.

ighteen-year-old Georgia Darlington is a multi-talented young horse woman. Her new ride Lisa’s Dream arrived at Georgia’s yard in Ockley last October and the eleven-year-old part bred Connemara has more than lived up to her name, after qualifying for both the RIHS and HOYS. Suffolk County Show saw the pair produce a copy book round of jumping to secure their place at HOYS in the Working Hunter Pony class. The consistent partnership followed up their Suffolk success at South of England Show where once again they were crowned Working Hunter Pony Champions in another HOYS qualifier. In between double qualifications for the most prestigious Championship in showing, Georgia and Lisa’s Dream have found time to go eventing (see front cover picture). Currently competing at BE100 (with the ambition of moving to novice in the next twelve months) they finished fourth at Aston Le Walls and fifth at Borde Hill to achieve places for the regional finals for the Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badminton next year. Emily Whalley and Prestwood Royal Appointment won the Amateur Riding Horse class and the Part bred Arab Championship at the South of England Show

Prestwood Royal Appointment Busy working mum Emily Whalley is enjoying taking time out to ride her home-bred Riding Horse, Prestwood Royal Appointment, in the show ring. The six-year-old gelding, by Dawes Firebird and out of Emily’s HOYS winning retrained racehorse Millimeter, qualified for the RIHS at the Heathfield Show and stood Ridden PBA Champion. More success followed at The South of England Show when Prestwood Royal Appointment won the Ridden Part bred Arab Championship for the third consecutive year. However, this was the first time Emily was at the reins as the two previous years she’s had other commitments, including being heavily pregnant. The Chorelywood based combinations success continued at the South of England, when they won the popular Amateur Riding Horse class and enjoyed a spin round the main ring in the Championship.

lenvar Star, known to his many friends as Mr G, has been a star by name and nature for owner rider Georgina Kester. The Connemara pony by Harp King is a true allrounder and this season has shown his talent for affiliated dressage. Finishing eighth in both the Prelim and the novice sections of the NPS Dressage Championship Mr. G has recently qualified for the BD Area Festival Finals and the BD Native Pony Championships, as well as winning the SE Connemara Show dressage with a score of 73%. This talented jumping pony, who has consistently been placed in working hunter pony classes, is now also enjoying. Georgia said: “He absolutely loves the cross-country and we both come back grinning afterwards!” There is lots more eventing on the agenda for the future.

Twelve-year-old Poppy Dadson from Ingatestone and John Lamb’s Hykos Bees Nees were part of the Shetland Pony Grand National display, racing at The South of England Show. Poppy is in her first season racing after attending a trial for JPL Racing and Events in February this year. She did her first Shetland Pony Grand National in May on Hykos Bees Nees at Badminton Horse Trials and was luckily enough to race at Royal Windsor Horse Show too. Poppy said: “I love riding Bee, she is an amazing pony and we have so much fun racing round the tracks. Thank you John for giving me this opportunity I am really having the best time.”

Nicola takes individual honours at Riding Club Championships Fourteen-year-old Nicola Damms and her KWPN, Umberto took a Junior Individual dressage title at the British Riding Club Equi-Theme Intermediate Winter Dressage Championships, held at Bury Farm at the end of April. Representing Fawkham & District Riding Club, Nicola was the Arena 6 Individual Champion. Trained by Hayley Greenwood, Nicola only started riding when she was 10, and made the big leap from her Connemara pony to the 16.1hh Umberto last year. Talking after her win, Hayley said: “‘I want to cry, but I’m not wearing waterproof mascara.” Nicola and Umberto have also been selected to represent the West Kent Sevenoaks branch of the Pony Club at the Area competition on 2nd July.

Four-year-old George Cole is currently competing in his first season in the show ring with his Shetland pony, Melliver Jewel, who was purchased from Debbie Barr last year. George’s mother, Rachel said: “George is still learning his rising trot, but is getting better all the time. He has qualified for Equifest and the Sunshine Tour this year, so will keep practising for those. As well as showing George and Jewel love to go to Pony Club, they are members of the West Kent Sevenoaks branch. Jewel particularly loves the jumping.”

Six-year-old Isla Breen and her pony, Razz, had a brilliant day at the Heathfield Riding Club Show on Sunday 11th June. They won the Best Lead Rein Rider class before going on to stand Overall Champions. Isla also rode her first ever dressage test on Razz, finishing fourth in a big class, for which she was delighted. Isla’s family bought the 10-year-old Razz at Easter and her mother describes him as “a little star”. The combination are members of the Southdown East Pony Club and enjoy attending rallies. New combination win first time out Successful pony rider Phoebe Leake frustratingly broke her ankle playing hockey just weeks after her family purchased a new horse for her, a 15hh Show Hunter pony called Master Jack, last October. The fracture was severe with major ligament damage and took several months to heal, meaning she was off games and unable to ride until March. The time-off obviously suited the pair as they were on winning form at the BSPS Winter Championships in April, their first time out at this level. They won the Winter Novice 153cm Show Hunter Pony and Winter Restricted Part Bred ex 148cm classes. At the BSPS Area 14’s Show they won their two classes, were Show Hunter Pony Reserve Champions and Area 14 Champions. Phoebe has qualified the eight-year-old for The Royal International Horse Show, The Blue Riband Pony of the Year, The Cherif Championship Show and The BSPS Champion of Champions. Next on the list is to claim that all important ticket for the Horse of the Year Show. Sixteen-year-old Phoebe’s other passion is Musical Theatre and when she’s not riding, she loves to perform and is currently studying for her Music Theatre Exam Grade 6 and Drama A level.

Five-year-old Ava Dale and her Dartmoor pony, Pumphill Japonica, have had a busy season so far, winning numerous classes and receiving some ‘Best Rider’ cards too. The combination won the BSPS Heritage Lead Rein class and the Lobster Pot Lead Rein class at the BSPS Area 15 class on Sunday 21st May. Other wins have come at Showing South East Shows, and so far, they have qualified for Royal London, Equifest, Ponies UK and BSPS Championships. Ava is trying hard to qualify for the Royal International, being placed third and fourth in the first two Pretty Polly classes she has contested.

Emma Warren’s Emma Warren and homebred Roque Luna qualified eight-yearfor RIHS at Mid Herts Spring Show old, Roque Luna qualified for the Royal International in the Lightweight Coloured Plaited at Mid Herts Spring Show. Emma was delighted to qualify as this is only her first year of trying, although the mare had a very successful season in the show ring last year with Emma’s friend, Lucy Fisher, qualifying for HOYS at only her second show. Emma works six days a week at a show jumping stud, so she tries to time her day off so she can go showing. Emma’s background is in show jumping, so showing is very new to her and she said: “We are still both learning, but I have met some lovely, helpful people along the way.”

Seven-year-old Darcey Blaze Marcus and her pony, Jenny Wren, had a successful day at S&D Equitation on Sunday 21st May. They had great fun in the Cross Poles and 40cm Show Jumping , their first time jumping at a competition off the lead rein, before going on to win the ‘My First Pony’ class.

Charlie the perfect cob Steph Hughes has owned her seven-year-old cob, Charlie, for 18 months. Steph says: “Charlie originally did trekking in Ireland, but has taken very well to riding club activities. The last year we have concentrated on dressage, competing at Red Horse Dressage, working up from Intro and just starting to give novice a go, as well as competing at a few local shows in ridden coloured and ridden cob classes. This year we have concentrated more on building up our confidence at jumping and getting out and about more. We have recently completed the Wye ride, been to Bigbury cross-country, completed our first BD test scoring 66% at Prelim and we went to the beach for our first ever beach ride, which has always been a dream of mine. We are looking forward to competing in our first ever hunter trial and my longer-term dream is to compete Charlie at BE80, we just need to find our brave pants. He loves his work and posing for a photo as you can see!” Steph Hughes achieved her dream of taking Charlie to the beach.

ur horses have carefully targeted worming programmes; we poo pick our paddocks; quarantine new horses and rotate our grazing, yet one of the biggest influencers of parasite burdens is unfortunately something we can do nothing about. The weather, most noticeably temperatures and rainfall, have a massive impact on the worms in our horses. It’s so influential that the National Animal Disease Information Service issues a monthly Parasite Forecast for farmers based on detailed Met Office data. The forecast tracks weather variations to highlight potential risks for sheep and cattle. Generally the milder and wetter the better for parasites; warm weather is convivial for activities like feeding and breeding and the damp weather keeps everything motile and ticking along. Spring and Autumn are naturally times of the year when parasites thrive. Ideally what we need our weather to deliver is extremes either side of this - cold, hard winters and hot, dry summers to stop parasites in their tracks.

Rainfall and moisture levels

In optimal conditions the most numerous of horse parasites, the redworm, can develop from an egg laid in a dung pile to its infective larval stage in as little as five days. In this time the tiny worm larvae, so small it’s barely visible to the naked eye, can travel about one metre. Impressive enough until we get some rainfall and this multiplies to up to three metres of getaway potential in wet conditions. This is important for survival; most horses won’t choose to graze near droppings so the further away a larvae can wriggle to a tempting blade of grass, the more likely its chance of being eaten by a potential host to continue its life cycle. In contrast hot, arid conditions, of the sort we get very little of here in the UK, spell disaster. Moisture deficit will slow, or even halt, development of the worm larvae and desiccate dung piles, exposing eggs to lethal rays of UV light. This makes harrowing a useful method of parasite control, but only in these conditions. Where there is any moisture present, it will merely serve to spread worm eggs around the pasture, allowing the larvae to penetrate into the protective vegetative layer.

Temperature

Worm eggs are generally made of pretty tough stuff, non-more so than roundworm eggs. The thick, sticky shell of the ascarid helps it to survive temperature extremes in the UK environment for up to 10 years. A portion of redworm eggs will also overwinter, enduring hard frosts to hatch in spring when the warmer weather comes along. Frost is effective at killing off tapeworm eggs but this doesn’t mean one good winter will eradicate them. Tapeworm have an intermediate host – tiny orabatid mites which are adept at wintering in British climes. There will be plenty of these infected grassland mites to see the species through the colder months. Temperature also affects the worms themselves. Redworm activity slows considerably below 6°C and development from egg into an infective larval stage could take several weeks in winter weather. Some however, will find a way to ride out the winter chill until ingested by a horse, where the warm internal temperatures spark them into action and perpetuate the lifecycle.

Given normal UK weather a healthy adult horse can follow a very simple plan of testing and dosing, worm egg counting Spring, Summer and Autumn, tapeworm testing every six months and giving a proactive winter dose for the possibility of encysted redworm. However, an unseasonably mild winter and a wet summer can significantly increase the risk of dangerous parasite burdens. in these sustained warm, wet conditions we need to be extra careful about monitoring our horses and consider reducing the time between worm counts to eight weeks, particularly with young, old or vulnerable horses. We should also be aiming to break the lifecycle of the worms mechanically as much as possible with pasture management and be ready to step in with the right chemical at the right time if necessary to ensure parasite levels don’t rise to a level where they might prove damaging to horse health.

ake, bunting and party bags were in abundance at Squirrells Riding School in Blue Bell Hill, Chatham, in Kent, on Thursday 1st June to celebrate becoming the 100th equestrian centre to join the hugely successful national Young Equestrians initiative; launched by The Pony Club in partnership with the British Equestrian Federation. International event rider Adam Trew joined the party at Squirrells to kick start the celebrations, hosting a special clinic for the riding schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enthusiastic young members followed by an opportunity for questions about the life of a professional event rider. Commenting on the event, Squirrells Riding School proprietor, Mrs Hayley Squirrell, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are delighted to be the

We are keen to use our facilities for this new Club, to offer young people (aged 13-18) from our local community a safe and relaxed environment where they can make new friends, ride regularly and participate in a range of other sports – it’s not just about riding and learning about horses. Preparing for Competition

Over the past few issues Kent-based event rider Adam Trew has shared his tips on training and improving your horse ready for the eventing season. In this issue, he focuses on putting what you have learned so far in to practise at an event.

take my time at home to make sure all the basics are in place and the horses are happy with what they’re doing before I take them out. Once I am sure my horses are working with me and understanding what I am asking of them, we are ready to try it all out at a competition. It is important that when I do take them out I stick to the same rules as I do at home and ask for everything the exact same way as I would if I was at home in the arena. This way the horses should start to learn and understand that no matter where we are working, the way I ride and ask for things will be the same so there is no need for them to worry. I think it is vital to make sure that the horse’s first few experiences of a competition are a happy, confident one. This sometimes means putting the competitive part of you to one side and focusing on training and developing your horse and working towards the end goal.

In the dressage warm-up the most important thing I work on is keeping the horses happy and feeling good in their body. It is too late 20 minutes before the test to make many improvements so rather than try and possibly worry them, I just try and make the best of what I’ve got. Obviously some horses do get quite excited when starting to get out and about at competitions with lots of other horses working around them, loud speakers, flags flying etc, so it is even more important that I stick to the rules as a rider and remain calm and try and work the horse through some simple exercises that they are comfortable with and used to doing at home, to try and get their attention back on to me and to relax.

Just as I would at home I leave them to do the jumping. From the very beginning I want them to know that I am not going to do all the work and help them out. I set the rhythm and the balance and it is their job to jump the fence. I don’t worry too much if the horse knocks the pole, as long as it wasn’t my mistake and the horse learns from it. If they start to think like this from the very beginning, then they should start to focus on the job and try their best to clear the fences.

This is one area that I work a lot on. Not only do I do this with my young ones, but with my upper level horses too. I spend most oneday-events schooling my horses round the cross-country picking up time faults, making sure that I am not having to hold them back, they stay in the rhythm I set and everything works just as I want it to, and ultimately, they are confident with everything out on the course. It’s a system I believe in and stick to, but I know it isn’t for everyone. It means sometimes compromising placings for training. Working my horses this way makes it extremely easy for me to ride forward to the fences and keep a smooth, forward rhythm when I do want to make the time. I have usually planned and targeted specific events for each of my horses, which I want to be competitive at, so I make sure all this is in place ready for those competitions.

Top Tips ➤ Be realistic with where you are at in your training. Don’t expect more than what your horse can offer or is capable of. ➤ Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. ➤ Remember to always trust what you’re doing and don’t focus too much on the final result. ➤ Most of all make it an enjoyable experience for both you and your horse. By making sure the basics are in place before you go to a competition, you will hopefully guarantee a good day for your horse.

Surrey County Show Stoke Park, Guildford, Surrey Bank Holiday Monday 29th May 2017 Words and pictures by Fiona Rafferty

he Surrey County Show is friendly, not too big, and takes place on what is really a very large village green. I love the intimacy of the event. It is great for spectating and has brilliant shopping too. The horse classes have a great mix of professional riders, who we see out and about at most of the county shows, competing alongside true locals who have come along to support their county show. The Novice Hunter kicked off proceedings in the Main Ring, with Katie Jerram-Hunnable taking the honours riding her five-year-old The Imperial Choice. Katie is a regular supporter of the Surrey County Show and retained the Bernard Weatherill Perpetual Trophy when she later took the Hunter Championship, a title she won last year with Her Majesty the Queen’s Heavyweight, Tower Bridge. The Lightweight honours went to Amanda Jayne Firman riding the impressive 17.3hh Johnnie the Fox. In the Middleweight section, Samantha De Caprio continued her winning form at this show with the now 13-year-old X-Factor. The combination also won the class in 2016 and 2015.

With the hunting community out in force to support the parade of horses and hounds of the Surrey Union Hunt, there was tremendous support for Surrey Union Whipper-In, Russell Ingram, when he won the Large Riding Horse and stood Champion with Colin Selley’s seven-year-old, Reality. There was a delay to proceedings in The Tattersalls and RoR Thoroughbred ridden Show Horse for ex-racehorses, as just as it was about to get under way the cattle which had been parading in the main arena made their way back to the cattle lines, passing right by the ex-racehorse ring. While some just nonchalantly took this in their stride, there were a few which lost concentration. It was rewarding to see good numbers forward for this class, with the eventual honours going to Alice Quinlan’s five-yearold, Where’s My Baby. Southerly Roberts took second place, riding Cassidy Hill’s eight-year-old, Imperial Ruby. One of the more laid back of the ex-racehorses Imperial Ruby had been chatting to the crowd as the

The large flat arena at Surrey County is perfect for riders to show the true elegance of riding side saddle. The horses which came forward ranged in height from 15 hands to 17.2hh and habits included navy, black and tweed. Rarely beaten in recent years, Esther Rostron and the now 17-year-old Penstrumbly Our Abram won the title for the third year running, collecting the Surrey Union Perpetual Challenge Cup. Georgina Steele and the neat little bay, Colbeach Mark of Distiction stood second, with Gabriella Ivey and Solomons Seal third.

Alex Kelly’s eight-year-old broodmare, Middlemarch II, stood Sports Horse Breeding Champion, collecting the Charlie Carter Perpetual Memorial Salver. By Millenium out of an ex-racehorse called Cautiously, Alex bought her as a four-year-old to show in ridden classes, but sadly she incurred an injury. Her charming first foal, Sandlings Wait Until Dark, by Up With The Lark, headed the Sport Horse Foal class. It was another horse by Up With the Lark, which headed the Sport Horse two-year-old section, Jane Townshend’s Classictop Up & At It out of Beseeka dawn Fox. While, Pippa Drew’s winning threeyear-old, Hammerwood Riola, by Rhondeo went on to stand Reserve Champion. In the Pony Breeding classes the Rodanieh perpetual Challenge Cup went to the winning three-year-old, Virginia RussellWood’s Stage Song. The 14hh filly is by Kilvington Scoundrel out of Stage Whisper. While Reserve went to the two-year-old, Mrs C Grace’s WB Wina, who is by Kittens Artistic Impression.

Lynn Russell and the seven-year-old Cappa Sham repeated their 2016 form when they headed the Traditional and Native Horse class, before standing Overall Champions. With the Reserve going to the compact coloured 11.3hh Pontardawe Tinkerbell, ridden by Cerys Holley. The coloured classes were well supported with other winners including Georgia Aungier, who was riding Jamie Rashbrook’s 15-year-old, Star Dream. The striking gelding also headed the In-Hand Plaited class earlier in the day. The Traditional and Native Ridden pony title went to Caroline Cameron’s Clonmines Lady, ridden by Sandra McKenzie. In the In-Hand Coloured classes Phaedra Towler’s stunning ponies took both the Championship and Reserve. It was the Traditional pony, the three-year-old Dooleys Over Ice who stood champion to the twoyear-old plaited pony, Havenbeech Man Hatten. Dooleys Over Ice has proved to be one of those impulse buys, that you just never regret. Phaedra said: “I bought Dooley when he was six-months-old. I saw a picture on Facebook, put a deposit down and went and collected him from Peterborough. He has been really successful from the off. He won his first show aged eight months and he has been winning ever since, including a recent win at Royal Windsor.” Phaedra said that Dooley has a home for life with her and she hopes in the future to break him to drive. Phaedra bought Havenbeech Man Hatten as a foal from Jodie Beecher of the Havenwood Stud. She explained that she just loves producing the ponies and Man Hatten will be for sale in the future and should make a 14hh show hunter pony.

Lynn Russell’s coloured cobs stood Champion and Reserve to each other in the Cob Championship. The now 11-yearold Gallifrey ridden by Lynn’s groom, Amy Gregory, in the championship took the tricolour, with Heavyweight winner, Volantis, in Reserve.

iders representing RDA groups from across the South East braved the torrential rain to participate in their annual Challenge Day, sponsored by Sussex’s Cowan Architects. Young riders came from across East and West Sussex, Kent and Surrey to display their riding skills in a range of activities including the Countryside Challenge, which was a qualifying event for the RDA National Championships in Hartpury, Gloucestershire in July. Most of the riders had come to go head-tohead in the Countryside Challenge, but there was also a dressage competition, Handy Pony, a number of gymkhana games. Julia Hockin of Cowan Architects, came to present the prizes and Michelle Foreman of Forelock Books, which specialises in pony story collectables for young pony mad readers, supported with prizes. The Countryside Challenge follows a simulated course where the riders put their skills to the test by tackling obstacles and tasks they might find in the country. These include going through a gate, crossing a ‘road’, entering a farmyard, picking an apple from a tree and collecting eggs from a chicken! Although great fun, this also tests their steering, balance and confidence. East Sussex’s East Park group from Lingfield, swept the board in the Junior’s with four qualifiers for this year – local company, Forelock Books, which specialises in pony story collectables for young pony mad readers, donated prizes this year for the junior classes. Fairlight Hall RDA from Hastings, also enjoyed particular success with Becky Wallis winning the Senior Countryside Challenge and qualifying for Hartpury and Daniel Burford winning the non-qualifying class. Maddie O’Connor and Beanie Drew, both from Cobbes Meadow, Canterbury, were winners in the dressage. Julia Hockin said: “It’s always such a treat and an honour to participate in these inspiring events and meet such enthusiastic young people. Despite the atrocious weather, there were smiles all round.”

his traditional show had classes for everyone, including in-hand showing , ridden showing, show jumping, and a selection of dressage classes (intro to novice), which took place in the brand new indoor arena. Entries were spread fairly evenly across all arenas, although the jumping ring did have a few classes with over 30 starters, so ended much later than usual at just after 7pm. The jumping started at cross poles and ended with a 90cm Open, which saw a high standard of competition. The Open was won by Rachael Moore with Star, who had a two second lead over second placed Olivia Miller riding Ricky. As is often the case, it was the 60cm class which drew the largest number of entries and was won by Florence Lloyd on Kilbrean Lad.

The ridden ring started with a selection of ‘mini’ classes such as Lead Rein and First Ridden. The lead Rein classes proved especially popular drawing record entries and an exceptionally high standard. Louis Recardo on Lingardswood Ruby headed a very strong Lead Rein Rider class, before going on to take the Mini Championship. Another popular class was the Riding Club Horse / Pony, which was won by Elle Wood and Once in a Blue Moon. Colette said: “It was great to see this event so well supported and to have such a lovely atmosphere. Everyone was cheering the riders on in the show jumping ring and just genuinely having a nice day out in the sunshine.”

Sunshine and Success for RDA’s South East Region’s

he sun shone brightly for the Riding for the Disabled’s South East Region’s Dressage Qualifier which was held at Hickstead on Wednesday 24th May. During a fabulous day, riders from groups across Kent, Surrey and East & West Sussex converged on Hickstead to show off their accuracy skills in dressage riding. And while the results were being collated, the numerous entries to the annual Arts & Crafts competition were judged by local artists Bob and Pip Sampson. There were 13 classes held across three arenas in all, of which seven were qualifying classes for the RDA National Championships at Hartpury, Gloucestershire in July. Joanna Sale of RDA Regional sponsors, Cowan Architects, presented the prizes. “Each year, the standard and passion that these riders show is exemplary. I’m amazed by what they have achieved and how much enthusiasm they have for their horses and the sport,” she said. Katie Radzik of Cobbes Meadow, Kent was a big winner, managing to qualify twice by winning two classes while brothers, Jon and Matthew Sullivan of Epsom RDA were happy to both qualify in the same class and on the same horse. There were a couple of annual trophies presented where Hope in the Valley riders, Daisy Murray won the Rose Bowl for the Highest Led score and Lottie Mayo won the Cup for the Highest Junior Qualifying Score. Cornillo’s Sharon Kelsall was delighted to win the Astor of Hever horse trophy for the highest score in the nonqualifier classes while Matthew Sullivan, from Epsom RDA, won the tankard for having the Highest Qualifying Score. Annabelle Groombridge from Bradbourne RDA in Kent won the individual class in the Arts & Crafts competition for her Magical Unicorn while Court Meadow (West Sussex) and East Park (East Sussex), were both winners in the group entries. All these Arts & Crafts winners will now go to the Nationals Competition in Hartpury in July. Michelle Charman of Forelock Books, which specialises in pony story collectables for young pony mad readers, donated prizes this year for the highest place junior in each class. She was joined by actress Sue Jamieson (When the Boat Comes In, New Tricks, Grandpa in My Pocket), who is one of her authors and a supporter of RDA.

Sunshine Tour Qualifiers Heat Up! As the sun has been shining, competitors have been qualifying for the Sunshine Tour Championships, which are being held at All England Showground, Hickstead from 14th to 17th September. We caught up with a few lucky ones who have qualified and have their sights set on winning those iconic yellow rosettes…

Erin Mulligan Gem Roe Irish Flash Qualified in Show Jumping at Codham Park Equestrian Centre, Essex Erin made sure she would be reunited with her 13-year-old Welsh D, known as Ben, when she moved from Ireland to England for university. They had not had the easiest time together in Ireland with a few ups and downs, and Erin’s mother was convinced that 15hh Ben would be the horse that would make her give up riding. With both their confidence at rock bottom they endured many hours of blood, sweat and tears, but with lots of lessons and perseverance they ended up competing up to 90cm at local shows. With everything they had been through together it broke Erin’s heart to leave Ben behind in Ireland when she started university in England. However, with sheer determination that they would be together again Erin worked and saved for months which meant she could eventually pay for everything herself to ship Ben over. They ended up qualifying at Codham Park EC coming fourth in the 70cm in a strong class, Erin could not be more delighted or excited, she said: “I am ecstatic, as we would never have had an opportunity like this in Ireland! I cannot wait for September to jump at Hickstead and hope, with the support of my sponsor Tottie Clothing, Ben and I will make everyone (and each other) very proud indeed.”

Caitlin Fahy - Moonshine Boy Qualified in dressage at Parwood Equestrian Centre, Surrey Ambitious 16-year-old Caitlin has owned Shaun aka Moonshine Boy for three years now. The 11-year-old 14.3hh Connemara pony was very green dressage wise when they bought him, but discovered that he has the most amazing attitude to life and willingness to learn. With the help of Caitlin’s instructor, Hinda Inglis, she has turned Shaun from a fun hacking pony into a dancing pony. They have been enjoying competing for West Surrey Riding Club as a Junior Member and have represented them at the recent Novice Winter Championships at Keysoe where she came fifth and also the Intermediate Winter Championships at Bury Farm where she came tenth. Caitlin is now having to concentrate on her GCSEs and so competitive riding has had to take a back step. After her exams Caitlin is lucky enough to have a week’s work experience at the Liphook Equine Hospital (as she wants to be a vet) and is then off to Kenya to volunteer for a month with Camps International. When she returns she’ll have just under a month to prepare to for the Sunshine Tour Championship Show so it looks like Mum, Lisa, will be doing a lot of lunging with Shaun, as well as riding and leading off her own horse to keep him fit.

Qualified in dressage at Oldencraig Equestrian Centre, Surrey Lauren has been lucky enough to qualify both her horses for the Sunshine Tour Championships this year. Lauren keeps herself busy by training all of her horses which she buys un-backed. She rescued her black mare, Secret Diamond, from Ireland where she was being sold for meat. She is now enjoying a much happier life with 20-year-old Lauren. The pair attended Sunshine Tour last year where they came second in their dressage arena. Lauren made sure they got their qualification for Prelim and Novice in nice and early this year by qualifying at Oldencraig in the snow. Lauren’s second horse, A Touch of Gold, went to his first ever dressage test recently and managed to win the red rosette and also qualify. Lauren said: “We couldn’t be more proud of this horse as I have owned him since he was six-months-old and my mum and I have done all the training with him. Caitlin Clark - Rummy Qualified at Brook Farm, Essex After being mis-sold a pony 16-year-old Caitlin Clark had to quickly find her confidence again on her new pony Rummy, a 14.2hh gelding. Being the superstar Rummy is, he gave her everything she needed to get her nerves back and two months later they were competing at Sunshine Tour 2016, where she was thrilled to bits to end up coming tenth in the Junior Intro Dressage and fifth in her showing class. Now, Caitlin is buzzing with confidence and excitement. Having been to Sunshine Tour every year since 2015. She said: “I feel I will be the most confident I ever have at Sunshine Tour, which is why I am looking forward to it so much. Rummy is the biggest superstar of a pony you could ever imagine, we have a strong partnership and he only ever wants to please. Taking him to the Sunshine Tour is a privilege and I’m extremely lucky to have him. He means the absolute world to me and more. Bring on sunshine tour 2017!”

Vikki Stanley - Alfred Qualified in showing at Southsea Rural Show

Maria Currant - Paddington Star Qualified at Offley & District Horse Show Positive Maria has had a difficult year but is sure to make both her parents proud at Sunshine Tour. When Maria outgrew her 13.2hh pony Brogan her parents, Susan and Malcom, bought her Paddy, an 11-year-old, 16.2hh Piebald Irish Sports Horse. They have done many things together and been through a lot of ups and downs, with the start of every season being held up in one way or another, but they still managed to do so well in the three years she has had him. Last July Maria sadly lost her mother to terminal cancer. Her mother was her biggest encouragement, spending days with her daughter, building jumps, going through dressage tests and always being there for her. Despite not having their own transport and all the upset of losing her Mum, Maria still managed to get out and win the Intro Championship at Warehill and also compete at the Chiltern and Thames final, where she finished third in the 60cm show jumping. At the start of this year Maria set about getting her own transport, she found a great company who were in the process of converting a lorry for them, when in April tragically her dad suddenly died, also from cancer. But keeping her head held high through the tears Maria was even more driven to make her parents proud of her and Paddy. Maria said: “Offley was our first outing of the year and after some deliberation we decided to go as that is what Dad would have wanted and we are so glad we did. He did my Mum and Dad proud. I was so happy when I was handed a qualification card as it has been a dream of mine to compete at Hickstead and now it is finally coming true and we will be able to make the journey in our very own box. Thank you for making peoples dreams come true with the chance to compete at such a prestigious showground.”

North Farm Stud works with the RSPCA and some time ago they received a call from them asking if they could bring in a foal that was in a very bad way. They couldn’t refuse and as soon as they Alfred pictured saw Alfred everyone fell after he was in love with him. He was first rescued found lying in a garden with pneumonia and very close to death. The poor little foal had to be lifted off the floor every time he got down as he did not have the strength to get back up. He was nursed back to health by the team and volunteers. Several months on Alfred’s case was resolved but the thought of him leaving was too much – So North Farm Stud and the RSPCA asked the charity HEROS if they would take him for re-homing. The lucky owner of Alfred, Vikki, said: “My mother and I had been supporters of HEROS for a while and been following little Alfred’s story online. We admired the fight of this little guy and went to see him; he was the smallest at the yard surrounded by ex-race horses - but a boss of the field! He has conquered so many hurdles to get to this point in his life. We fell in love with him straight away and he came to live with my 16.3 horse, Jack. A friend mentioned how striking Alfred was and that we would show him in-hand. This was new to me as I had never done any kind of showing. However, we bathed and washed him (much to his disgust) and got some advice on showing, then headed off to our first show. Sure enough little Alfred won in his first ever class and was second in the next. He has now won at a few shows, usually in the coloured or cob sections in hand. We are so happy for this little guy who is a real character and has given me a new equestrian discipline to enjoy. Alfred is a lovable pony, who considering how he was treated in his early days, loves human contact. He enjoys being in the arena and takes everything in his stride. We look forward to what the future holds for this incredible pony and our new showing career which starts with the Sunshine tour 2017.”

SUNSHINE TOUR Amanda Checkley Fairway Matilda

Valerie Isted BFG Qualified in show jumping at HRH Equestrian, West Sussex Valerie’s 17.3hh Belgium warmblood is true to his name, BFG. She describes him as ‘a big horse with an even bigger heart’ and he is clearly very special to Valerie. Last September Valerie and BFG had a terrible accident and she thought she was going to lose her gentle giant, but being the trooper he is he managed to pull through. Valerie recalls the terrible accident, saying: “We were on a sponsored ride when six other horses galloped past, BFG followed and I couldn’t stop. He fell in a ditch and bumped his face on a concrete bridge. The injuries were horrendous and I honestly thought we were going to lose him. We took him straight to the vet who performed surgery to a broken top and bottom jaw, and removed all his front teeth apart from one. It’s been a worrying year, not knowing how he would cope eating etc. BFG being the kind of horse he is bounced back almost straight away. Within six weeks he was allowed to be gently ridden again and three months later we jumped our first jump and I was relieved to find he was still just as keen. Fast forward to now and he won his class and has not just one, but two qualifications for show jumping at the Sunshine Tour. We attended in 2015 and are so excited to have the opportunity to come back again especially after all we’ve been through.”

Qualified in showing at Goring & District Riding Club Show Amanda found herself taking on feisty little Tilly, a 14hh, 19-year-old, part Welsh pony after her daughter gave up. Tilly used to go out and compete with Amanda’s daughter at Goodwood Pony Club, but since Amanda has taken her on she has found a new talent in the world of showing. They have been attending local shows and trying their hand at in-hand veteran classes where they have won three out of four. Last year they had their shining moment when they won the Delightfully Dapper class at Sunshine Tour and won their first sash, Amanda is incredibly proud of her and her new partnership. She says “Tilly is very strong and fast, so not a typical child’s pony.” At the weekend they like to hack out with their little pack - Amanda’s partner, Paul, Daisy the dog, and Poppy and Prim the puppies. Amanda is still working hard to get the best results for this year though. “I just need to get my running speed up a bit because Tilly can move beautifully, but I can’t keep up with her and my age is more of a hinderance than a help. Our next show is the Goring and District Showing Show in Worthing in July, so fingers-crossed my running is better and we are in the ribbons again!”

Caoilin Nannery - Dolly Qualified in show jumping at Hall Place Equestrian Centre A very excited 16-year-old Caoilin is definitely looking forward to Sunshine Tour this year. She attended last year with her old pony and although it did not go as Caoilin would have planned she loved every minute of the stay away show. She was the only one in her group of friends that competed, but her five other friends still came to support her and they all loved the experience too. Caoilin now owns Dolly, a 16hh, eight-year-old Dutch warmblood mare, who she has had since September. They are still working on their partnership, but have still managed to qualify for the 90cm Show Jumping and fully intend on getting their qualification for the 1m soon, as well. Caoilin seems to be totally besotted by her new horse, they love show jumping, but are also trying their hand (and hooves) at other disciplines too, Dolly seems to like everything! Caoilin loves the Hickstead showground and said: “I am especially excited for this year. It will also be my first away show with Dolly, however I’m sure she will love it as much as I do. The Hickstead show ground is by far my favourite place to travel to.”

Mia De Simone - Pip Qualified in showing at Colettes Horse Show, Kent If anyone is excited for a ‘showcation’ it is Mia and her trusty horse, Pip. Pip is a 10-year-old, 15.2hh chestnut Anglo Arab. Mia has not found her the easiest horse to get on with, but keeping at it has proved to be beneficial for Mia as they now seemed to have turned a corner, so much so that they intend on coming to Sunshine Tour for the full four days. Mia has managed to qualify in showing as well as Intro and Prelim dressage. Mia is clearly very excited for her first stay away show with her friends and said: “It will be our first stay away show and I’m very excited to be competing at Hickstead, luckily our friends have also qualified and we will be making it a showcation.” To find a qualifying venue near you for show jumping, dressage, showing and eventers challenge go to www.sunshinetour.co.uk

Do horses get hay fever, and is it the same in horses as it is in humans? Yes they do, says VioVet vet Sophie Wilkinson, and usually it presents in a similar way.

lthough Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) is most often seen in horses during the winter months as an allergy to dust in their stables, it can present in some horses during the summer in a similar way to asthma in people. This form is known as Summer Pasture Associated RAO.

What are the signs?

The condition is characterized by airway narrowing and inflammation, as well as mucus production in response to allergens usually pollens or moulds inhaled whilst horses are out in the field. It can occur at any age but is usually seen in horses over nine-years-old. Clinical signs include a cough, increased respiratory rate and effort, nasal discharge, exercise intolerance and flared nostrils. Your vet may be able to hear crackles and wheezes on auscultation of the lungs with a stethoscope. Owners may also notice a ‘heave line’ caused by the increased effort of breathing.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually based on clinical signs but a tracheal wash or bronchoalveolar lavage can be done to confirm the diagnosis. This involves passing a scope through the horse’s nose into the windpipe. Sterile saline is flushed into the airways and collected again. The presence of a type of white blood cell in the sample confirms lower airway inflammation.

Treatment and prevention:

Good management is essential in the treatment and prevention of RAO. Affected horses should be kept in their stable during the spring and summer months or when the pollen count is high. Hay should be soaked to reduce dust and feeding from the floor can help to expel excess mucus. In more severe cases your vet may prescribe medication to open up the airways or steroids to reduce inflammation. These drugs are given orally but in recurrent cases of SPA-RAO, maintaining the horse on inhalers is effective. Aveley & District Riding Club Show, in 1994, although this is when we first met, circumstances meant we did not date for another ten years! When did you realise your wife liked horses? At the Aveley & District Riding Club Show! I had gone there to support my sister, who was also competing. I first saw Vikki on her Arab, Flyer.

Do you ride yourself? Yes, I do now. Favourite horse? Patrick, a big, lovable, failed police horse, my first love. How do you support your wife with her horses? I listen.

What’s the best thing about horses? They don’t care about your status, wealth or power. Or whether you have had a good day or a bad day. They teach you a lot about who you are. I think they have made me a better person. What’s the worst thing about horses? This is a tough one. Being a relatively new covert, I can get a bit evangelical about how great horses are. So, the worst thing, they are fragile. Do you go to shows or competitions and if you do what sustains you through the day? I go to support Vikki and Conna at local showing classes. The classic bacon roll and strong cuppa in a polystyrene cup does the trick. Do you have any hobbies? Riding horses! It wasn’t always this way, I used to be into model making, planes, trains and automobiles.

Most confusing thing you’ve ever heard her say about a horse? He is ‘up hill’. Also, ‘behind the leg, ‘on the bridle’. All very confusing once. Now I am educated. What advice would you offer to anyone about to marry a woman who owns a horse? Prepare to get involved. Resistance is futile.
