Welcome
34 28
This March being one of the coldest on record certainly caused havoc with the competition calendar. While some shows were able to run, others were cancelled and we feel greatly for all the organisers who had to make the tough call after months of preparation. As we go to print the sun is shining and spring is hopefully on its way. Despite the disruptive weather I have managed to leave the office on a few occasions this month. I had a delightful afternoon with Andrew and Hannah Gould, watching Andrew ride and chatting about their Foxy Horsebox and hire business, as well as their plans for the yard. You can read more all about Andrew and Hannah and ‘when eventing met dressage’ on page 11.
Brand new hospital I also spent an interesting afternoon in the company of Ed Lyall of the Sussex Equine Hospital touring the brand new hospital and discovering the amazing services they provide their equine clients. The hospital opened last summer and was built to the vets’ specific plans. Turn to page 34 to find out more.
Mother & daughter team
44
My third trip out of the office was to meet Annabel Blake and her daughter Katy Wise, who each own a homebred stallion. I was intrigued to discover that Annabel bred her stallion, Britannia Royal, using an embryo from the amazing four-star event mare, Headley Britannia. While Katy owns the competition pony stallion, Prometheus, who is out of her old Pony Club competition mare. You can read all about the mother and daughter team and their exciting competition stallions on page 27.
Shows & events With the busy competition season now under way, we have a selection of shows and events listed in the Show Dates Guide on page 60. If you can’t find what you are looking for pop over to the Localrider website to see our full guide to the season ahead. We always encourage readers to send in news and pictures and we have six pages of Regional Roundup celebrating their success (page 18). Some are just starting out in their riding careers, while others are experienced competitors. This mix of ages, abilities and disciplines makes my job a delight to do, so, if you do something special and feel you deserve a mention, drop me a line and send a picture, as we would love to know. Have Fun!

news ‘Cocktails, Canapés & Comedy’ in aid of the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund
O
n 24th April 2018, The Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund are presenting an evening of cocktails, canapés and comedy, with award-winning comedian, Rory Bremner headlining this very special one-off London event. Bringing together some of the UK’s hottest comedy talent, the event aims to raise funds for this small, but incredibly valuable charity. Rory, whose family are also passionate equestrians, is an avid supporter of the MDIRF and will bring his own distinctive style and humour, alongside special guests, to a packed audience during the evening event at Bush Hall in Shepherd’s Bush. Tickets from £35. Doors open at 7pm. For further information visit www.mdirf.co.uk
BedKind supports Ebony Horse Club BedKind recently supported Ebony Horse Club, a community riding centre based in Brixton, by donating two pallets of their dust-extracted cardboard bedding. Brixton has one of the UK’s highest rates of child poverty, and Ebony Horse Club provides around 140 local young people with opportunities to learn life skills like teamwork, commitment, respect, and empathy, as well as learning to ride and care for horses. BedKind’s mission is to ‘be kind’ to the people who look after animals, too and they supported Ebony Horse Club by volunteering their own time, as well as donating bedding. BedKind is easy to use, and its unique properties mean that it locks away moisture, and prevents the buildup of mould, odours, and ammonia, which is ideal when it needs to be used in large quantities. It’s also easy to muck out, and composts very quickly.
Eventers – the equine triathletes Watching the amazing horses competing at Badminton makes you realise what complete, all round athletes they truly are. With the balance and suppleness of dressage, the speed and power of cross country followed by the precision and effort of the show jumping phase these horses are, certainly, the triathletes of the equestrian world. No self-respecting human athlete would consider their training regime complete without several sessions in the gym each week to work on specific muscle groups to build core strength to enhance their performance. Similarly, with equine athletes, sports science has made training more effective without as much wear and tear from endless distance work. From interval training to gymnastic lunge exercises, horses can now become fit and prepared with less strain on their bodies. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says: “Many exercises on the lunge increase hind limb strength enabling greater engagement and lifting over the back. This in turn improves lightness of the forehand and strong abdominals, which builds core strength essential for all the three phases of eventing. Achieving this is much easier using a good lunge aid such as the EquiAmi, which invites and rewards the horse for developing wither lift by softening as soon as they respond. This can be started gently with youngsters as, developing their back and core strength, will make later stages of training so much easier for the horse as their natural balance and symmetry will be greatly enhanced. Even at lower levels we ask our horses to do long jump, high jump, sprints, middle and long distance running, alongside a mixture of dance and gymnastics, so lungeing exercises, as part of your regular fitness training, will get more from your equine athlete at every level.” EquiAmi has endorsements from top riders such as Harry Meade, Jonty Evans and Natasha Baker MBE as well as veterinary surgeons therapists. www.equiami.com

Young Rider Development and Mentoring Club Last summer dressage judge and trainer, Mary-anne Horn together with her friend, dressage trainer, Mark Ruddock, formed the Young Rider Development and Mentoring Club. The idea was to offer free training and support to riders who wouldn’t normally be able to afford to train with high profile coaches. Mary-anne and Mark held two viewing days and it quickly became apparent just how great the need for this type of support there is. Mary-anne would like to thank Jane Manley owner of Four Elms Equestrian Centre, who has been a great support of the project, offering her facilities for free. Mary-anne said: “I was surprised at how many riders applied. Through the club we are able to offer training days in the holidays and whenever possible. Mark and myself also took on a couple of riders to mentor privately, offering lessons at a reduced fee. Some of our riders had excellent results through the summer, clearly benefiting from this scheme.” Mary-anne is now looking to add other areas of expertise to the support offered by the club, including sports psychology, saddle fitting, nutrition, etc. Mary-anne added: “We would welcome support from anyone who feels they could contribute to the club.” Please contact Mary-anne by email maryanne_horn@hotmail.com

Dog Agility and Human Tractor Pull at the Heathfield Show Everything is coming together to make the 71st Heathfield & District Agricultural Show a day to remember. The closing date for the Horse competitions is 16th April. Entries can be made on line or via post and contact the Show Secretary if you need a paper copy of the schedule. Last year saw the first Human Tractor Pull, a tug of war between a team of six people against one tractor. Definitely something to watch in Ring 2 during the day. Arts & Crafts have always featured heavily in Country Shows and this year the Heathfield Show is rejigging the format. Featuring more local ‘crafters’ with a larger array of products for sale and hands on demonstrations of how things are made we hope you will enjoy visiting this marquee. In the Countryways area of the showground, there will be demonstrations of bygone crafts that formed the epicentre of any rural area. From bee keeping, to spinning, sign writing to wood carving, leather working and saddlery, many an hour can be spent wandering around these demonstrations. The United Retriever Club will be doing a live display of dog obedience and the Sussex Falconry will be flying their raptors. Being one of the first agricultural shows of the year the Heathfield Show always attracts a good selection of trade stands and this year will be no exceptions. The agricultural machinery outlets from tractors, combines and ploughs will be present, along with oak framed buildings, field shelters, country clothing and estate agents. They will all be present making the Show the place to be on Saturday 26th May. Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.heathfieldshow.org

Eridge RDA Raise £2,000 Eridge Riding for the Disabled Group raised an impressive £2,000 at its ‘Snail Race Night’ family fundraiser on Friday, 16th February, when nearly 150 ‘racegoers’ turned out to support it and enjoy a buffet supper. Jan Carmichael, who provides several ponies each week for the Group’s riding sessions, was the Race Night Organiser. “I’m thrilled,” she said. “It was such a fantastic evening and so well supported. This money will provide much needed funds to allow us to buy new equipment and toys to ensure our riders have as much fun learning as they can.” Eridge RDA has been running for about 40 years in or around the Ashdown Forest. Affiliated to the national Riding for the Disabled Association, Eridge RDA provides riding for children with profound learning and physical difficulties from the age of 2 to 25. Several come from two local maintained special schools, as well as children with special educational needs, who attend mainstream schools. Riding can bring a new dimension to necessarily restricted lives, encourage independence and does much to improve a wide range of medical conditions In the South East there are 35 groups across Surrey, Sussex and Kent with over 2,000 riders of all ages and the commitment of more than 1,000 volunteers.
Petplan Equine sees an increase in Gastric Ulcers claims Petplan Equine, one of the top UK horse insurance recently published data on the Top Five most claimed for conditions in 2017. Arthritis has maintained its first position, with claims showing an increase for Gastric Ulcers and a reduction in Laminitis when compared to 2016 data. Laminitis has seen a reduction in claims of more than 19% compared to 2016 and has fallen to number five in the ranking. Gastric Ulcer claims however, have increased by more than 28% year on year. This would suggest that increased knowledge amongst horse owners, use of better management techniques, as well as more accessible veterinary tests being available has had a visible effect on claims.
Gastric Ulcers Petplan Equine’s Veterinary expert Gil Riley MRCVS commented: “The awareness that many underperforming horses do so because they are suffering from Gastric Ulcers means checking for their presence is high on the list of priorities for vets investigating such cases. It is also well recognised that back pain and stomach ulcers commonly occur together, possibly because the discomfort and stress caused by a bad back may interfere with the maintenance of a healthy stomach lining and vice versa.”
Laminitis Gil added: “Reduced claims for laminitis is a reflection of the ever-growing awareness amongst horse owners and vets of the two hormonal diseases responsible for 90% of Laminitis cases, Cushing’s and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. As a result, we are testing for these conditions and if present, putting preventative treatment management changes in place before the distressing condition that is laminitis has an opportunity to occur.” Kate Hopkins, Petplan Marketing Consultant explained: “Every year when we review our Top Five most common health problems in horses we see interesting changes which can point toward shifts in equine management. Petplan Equine paid out over £3 million to customers for the Top Five conditions in 2017 and over £11.9 million was paid out for claims in total. This shows quite clearly how important it is to have quality horse insurance to help cover the cost of unexpected veterinary treatment.” To find out more about Petplan Equine’s Top Five claims and get expert advice from Gil Riley MRCVS on spotting the signs and treatment visit www.petplanequine.co.uk/top5

Lots of new fences at Lodge Farm It has been all systems go at Lodge Farm this spring, despite the slow start due to the weather. Clinics with the likes of Francis Whittington, Sam Champney-Warrener and Sam Jennings have proved extremely popular and the new additions to the course, constructed over the winter, have been enthusiastically received. “We listened to feedback from riders and built new fences accordingly,” explains Lodge Farm’s Ellie Crosbie. “People wanted more technical questions at the smaller heights, so that’s what we’ve given them. We have new skinnies and testing angles around the water jump – all at around 80-90cm – plus two bigger, new hanging logs straight into water, and a mini version for the less experienced. The new mounds, which needed time for the ground to settle, are now fully functioning with fences that make good use of the helter-skelter terrain.” “We are very lucky to have Dominic Moore from Jump 1 on board and the plan is to keep adding and making changes to the course as often as we can,” continued Ellie. “We work very hard to keep the ground as good as possible and our fantastic grass cover, together with the constantly maintained all-weather takeoffs and landings, enable us to offer optimum going all year round.” Last year, Lodge Farm hosted a very popular Eventers Practice Day, where riders had the opportunity to ride a dressage test, jump a course of show jumps and choose a flagged cross-country course. There are plans to run more of these this year. Dates will be posted on the website: www.lodgefarmcrosscountry.com, where you can also find all the latest news, plus details of upcoming clinics.

aura Gordon from Wick in West Sussex has been selected as a Petplan Equine Ambassador for a second year. Following the success of the Ambassadors programme last year, Petplan Equine have continued with seven of their current Ambassadors from 2017 and selected three more riders for 2018 from their customer base. These riders are all well known in their local equestrian community, advocates for responsible horse ownership and are passionate about competing. All of the Ambassadors are armed with the task of helping promote the brand and highlight the importance of responsible horse ownership and insurance, in keeping horses happy and healthy. Laura is a veterinary nurse in a small animal practice, so is very familiar with Petplan as an insurance company and its reputation. Laura owns three horses: Nelson a 27-year-old Welsh Cob, Ransom a 20-year-old Thoroughbred-cross and Finley a ten-year-old Irish Thoroughbred. All three compete at different levels, which certainly keeps Laura busy outside of work.

Katie Preston
Another local Petplan Ambassador is Katie Preston from Cranbrook in Kent. Katie is an equine veterinary surgeon and a keen eventer. She currently has three horses: Templar Justice (TJ), Dreams Come True (Tia) and Templar Juno (Juno). TJ is an 11-year-old Thoroughbred gelding eventing at Advanced and three-star level and is qualified and ready to step up to four-star. Tia is a sevenyear-old sports horse mare who Katie bred herself and competes at one-star level. At just 15hh, Katie refers to her as her ‘pocket rocket’! Katie’s third horse, Juno, is a four-year-old who she has had for two years and recently backed. She has a willing attitude and has so far taken everything in her stride. Katie commented: “I feel honoured to have been selected to be a part of the 2018 Petplan Equine Ambassadors and I am really looking forward to meeting the rest of the team. I am excited about the season ahead and grateful for the support that we will receive with our training. Working as a vet, I have had the opportunity to work with many insurance companies and find none easier to deal with than Petplan Equine. Insuring my own horse with Petplan Equine, I know that they will do everything possible to make things run Katie Preston smoothly. Their knowledgeable and Templar and professional service makes a Justice potentially stressful situation very straightforward.” The Petplan Equine Ambassadors will be provided with branded kit as well as £500 towards competition entries and training costs. Media training will also be given to support them further in their equestrian careers.

New bits for 2018: Great news for dressage enthusiasts! D
id you know that British Dressage (BD) is allowing a vast number of additional bridles, nosebands and bits in 2018? A pleasing number of our favourite mouthpieces from Bombers Bits have been added to the list of permitted tack items for use during dressage tests, as follows, in either loose ring, hanging cheek, eggbutt, full cheek (fulmer) and Dee (D) ring styles, unless specified otherwise below:
Flexible Mullen
The Bombers Flexible Mullen mouthpiece is made from an internal stainless steel chain covered with a non-toxic, UV resistant PVC tube. This bit offers exceptionally soft and evenly distributed pressure over the horse or pony’s tongue and bars. The Fulmer is a favourite of ours - it has the same effect as the traditional eggbutt, e.g. preventing pinching.
Elliptical Cable
This is an exciting new bit that applies pressure on the tongue to encourage the horse’s head down. The Elliptical Cable applies sharper pressure than the control plate bit, while the cable offers a ‘spring-back’ action, which together with the elimination of the links joining the three pieces of the mouthpiece further reduces pressure.
Word by Stephen Biddlecombe of SB Bits
Further info BD has also approved a further selection of bits from Bombers; they include the ‘Happy Tongue Straight’, a brand new mouthpiece that is ported to relieve tongue pressure, but is not curved like he standard ‘Happy Tongue’. Also, there’s the ‘Snaffle Cable’, which reduces the renowned nutcracker action while a ‘spring-back’ action of the cable further reduces pressure in all areas. Also approved are the Loose Ring Dressage Plate (also called ‘Loose Ring Control Plate Dressage’), the Elliptical Dressage Control and the Elliptical Control. Some of these newer bits are available as special order only. Visit this website to see BD’s pictorial, approved bits guide http://tiny.cc/bombers (the ‘Loose Ring Ultra Comfy Lock Up’ is currently not featured, but is approved). Stephen Biddlecombe of SB Bits is the UK distributor for Bombers Bits - visit www.worldwidetack.com
Bomber Blue
This bit consists of a lightweight rubber nylon compound that is ported for tongue relief. This design reduces tongue pressure, while applying pressure to the bars of the mouth. The Bomber Blue bit may be suitable for horses with large tongues.
Ported Barrel
The Bombers Ported Barrel was created to relieve pressure on the tongue via its medium port, which creates space for the tongue. The barrel joint relieves pressure on the bars by spreading it over a larger area and limiting the nut cracker action of a conventional snaffle.
SB Bits – Bitting expertise straight from the horse’s mouth
Loose Ring Ultra Comfy Lock Up
This mouthpiece follows the contour of the horse’s tongue. The centre joint has been double locked to ensure that the angle over the tongue remains correct, even when the reins are taken up; individual lateral aids are retained.
Happy Tongue bits
The Eggbutt and Loose Ring Happy Tongue snaffles from Bombers continue to be extremely popular bits and are BD approved. The Happy Tongue is a solid mouth piece that’s curved and ported, to give tongue relief. So many horses work well in these bits! (The Eggbutt is pictured below).

FEED NEWS
Gaining an advantage with this season’s Performance
Dodson & Horrell Brand Ambassador Jess Campbell
Dr Karl Steptoe talking to Joe Davison
A
t last the cold dark nights are getting lighter, the winter coats are shedding and the dates in the competition and training schedules are getting booked in. After a long cold winter – spring has made it and with it sees the 2018 season emerge. With your seasonal goals in the forefront of your minds, now is a good time to be committing to small improvements that make up your whole performance. Its second nature to ensure your tack is in good condition, the lorry is safe and sound, and your protective gear is current to the correct safety standard. But how about the areas you have taken for granted or feel there is no room to improve?
Marginal gains in Performance
Marginal gains in performance sport was first discovered in the cycling industry by Team GB Performance Director, Sir Dave Brailsford. Brailsford’s objective was to break down all areas that went towards the whole performance, from nutrition to psychology, endurance strength to rest. He believed that if all these areas could be improved by just 1%, the cumulative gains would eventually be hugely significant. His results are now Team GB’s turnaround in cycling history! Other sports have also taken this perspective and it has seen positive results across the board. It’s about realising that your weaknesses of last season are not threats to your 2018 performance. Performance areas that have the opportunity to seek improvement should be viewed from a positive perspective. Weaknesses that have become ‘accepted’ should be seen as opportunities to make adaptions, these adaptions, one by one are your personal performance areas that could improve through the marginal gains theory.
Nutritional Gains
Nutrition is one major areas that can be addressed, with expert help so easily sourced. The Dodson & Horrell helpline (0345 345 2627) is open all week and their expert equine nutritionists are on hand to give you free tailored nutritional advice regardless of the brand you use. Why wouldn’t you want to get that extra percentage by getting the fuel that meets your horse’s needs right from the start? Dodson & Horrell’s new and improved high quality Performance Range is now available at your local stockist. The new formula, Elite Sport Muesli provides performance level nutrition, with a low level of starch for those prone to gastric ulceration or others requiring a lower starch diet to maintain normal muscle function. Containing Actisaf Yeast, it provides a combination approach to hindgut support. The inclusion of their unique Fibre Plus Complex also supports fermentative capacity of the hind-gut to ensure your horse can get the most from their feed to perform. Excellent levels of antioxidants and Vitamin E are provided to help maintain normal muscle function, as well as a full spectrum of vitamins and chelated minerals to support your athlete. It is also low in sugar.
Added Electrolytes
This exciting performance range includes feed with ingredients such as electrolytes; so you don’t have to add more. Lack of storage a problem? Look at their unique and innovative all in one feed, great for travelling or for yards that are short on space, but you won’t be short on essential performance nutrition (Fibre Performance). The range includes products with QLC (Quality Life Care), extra vitamins
and digestive support to muscle recovery post events. This range suit all horses which are serious in performance, find out more from the Dodson & Horrell nutritional experts, who can offer you advice and point you in the right direction. The Performance Range is suitable for any horse or pony that is in regular training and wants to compete on a regular basis from your first season to elite sport veterans. Understanding the energy needs of your horse is essential and you need to ask yourself if you are knowledgably giving them what they need; as opposed to guessing or taking advice from someone who may have sourced professional equine nutritional advice; but for their athlete not yours. Take the responsibility to do some homework, read labels on packaging and learn to understand what exactly you are feeding your horse. Dodson & Horrell has the largest team of Performance Horse Specialists and a dedicated expert team answering your calls, making your 1% marginal gain in the nutrition area an easy one to earn.

Performance Psychology Gains
Another area a marginal gain can be earned is from a psychological aspect. It isn’t just for elite sportspeople either; Dodson & Horrell ambassadors are supported by Dr. Karl Steptoe CPsychol. Karl works with sports people from many disciplines from grassroots to elite. Equine sport has been slow to pick up the benefits of performance psychology, but it is an area that is growing, possibly due to the positive results it can bring. Despite the acknowledgement that the ‘mental game’ influences not only performance, but also enjoyment and wellbeing, it is often not given the attention it deserves. Karl explains: “In my experience, this can be because the rider feels that, to address such areas would be to highlight weakness or even, that it is not possible to improve this part of performance. I often hear riders label themselves in a way that suggests that mental sates are a part of them, ‘I’m just not a confident person, I’m a worrier or, I always get so anxious before events’. When you add to this the unhelpful belief that having such unwanted thoughts and feelings means that it is impossible to achieve your ultimate goals; there is often little optimism that things can change. So, I think that addressing this most destructive of beliefs is where you should start. It is important to understand how the development of psychological skills can enhance all aspects of your performance and, as importantly, greatly impact your enjoyment and passion for the sport along the way.” Don’t let 2018 be the year you run out of steam. Call Dodson & Horrell now and find out what marginal gain you can earn through fuelling to win from day one. For more information on performance feeds for your horse, call Dodson & Horrell Nutrition helpline (Mon-Fri) 0845 345 2627 or visit www.dodsonandhorrell.com Find out more about Dr Karl Steptoe at www.amtp.co.uk

Tricks of the Trade
Winner of the Supreme Championships at both the Horse of the Year Show and the Royal International As the competition season approaches we caught up with Jayne Ross to discover how she produces some of the most beautifully presented horses on the show circuit. Jayne and her team use 60 litres of ShowSheen Original Hair Polish and Detangler during the show season
J
ayne Ross and her team are firm believers in letting the show horses behave as horses. Many of Jayne’s 20 strong team live out at night even at this early stage of the year. Jayne said: “When our horses are not in the show ring, I like them to live as naturally as possible, this means daily turnout, so they can chill out and get as utterly filthy as they please. It’s nothing a good bath won’t sort out!” However, every single horse from the yard always looks their absolute best when entering the show ring and Jayne and her team achieve this through a combination of great all-round horse management and care and using top turnout products from Absorbine to make the most of each horse’s attributes The Absorbine ShowSheen range of horse care and turnout products provides several of the absolute staple turnout products in Jayne’s busy yard. In any given season, the team will use around 60 litres of ShowSheen Original Hair Polish and Detangler. Jayne said: “ShowSheen is our ‘must have’ product, it is so versatile and detangles and shines wherever it is used. We always take great care not to get it on the reins or under the saddle though. We have taken to putting a dab of Show Sheen Detangler Gel on the plaits before we enter the ring, this provides a great shine, but less slippiness near the reins. When we are ready to enter the ring, a touch of the Detangler Gel on the horse’s face will give that extra shine and wow factor.” Horses at Jayne’s yard are always bathed the day before a show. Jayne said: “We always bathe our horses in warm water to lift dirt and grime, using Absorbine ShowSheen 2-in-1 Shampoo
Jayne’s horses are always turned out immaculately in the show ring

& Conditioner. When horses are washed as frequently as ours are we need to be really careful that they don’t get scurfy and 2-in1 is gentle on the skin and leaves the coat in great condition. Afterwards they get a good rub with a towel to help dry and keep them warm. For grey or coloured horses that are prone to stable stains, Absorbine ShowSheen Stain Remover and Whitener is the go-to product at Moor Farm. Jayne said: “The Absorbine Stain Remover is a great pre-treatment product for any stable stains, we simply spray the Stain Remover on the dirty area and leave it for a few minutes before washing the stain away. This is such a simple yet effective product.”
Manes and Tails
It will be apparent as soon as a horse arrives in the yard as to whether he will be hogged or plaited once he begins his showing career. Jayne said: “This will affect how we rug the horse, if we are going to be doing plaits then we will never use up-the-neck rugs as this can affect the mane for several months to come. We will hog a cob’s mane as soon as we can, so we can see the shape of their neck, as the mane can often hide the true neck shape. All our horses have pulled tails. We start off pulling the young horses’ tails very quietly and slowly, particularly the first time they are done. We use Absorbine Detangler Gel or ShowSheen in the horses’ tails frequently to keep them looking smart on a day to day basis. We never brush tails as it causes the hair to break. We spray ShowSheen onto the horse’s tail and just use our fingers to run through.”

Hooves
Jayne continued: “All of the horses have normal shoes throughout the winter. When the shows start, we will use light steels or aluminium plates for the ring, particularly on the really big moving horses. If the ground dictates we will use studs behind, but never in front. We never use studs in an indoor arena. Horses’ hooves go through the mill in our ever-changing British climate, and this can result in cracks. We use Hooflex Liquid Conditioner to maintain consistent moisture balance for the hoof through the seasons, keeping good hoof condition and helping avoid shoes pinging-off. We use SuperShine Hoof Polish at shows, when we are careful to use black polish on black feet and clear polish on white feet. This does sometimes lead to two different pots being used on the same horse if he has black front feet and white hind ones. Never use black polish on white feet, it makes them look like they are wearing wellington boots!

We are careful to choose a numnah that goes with the horse, some horses will be better off with black and some brown. We go for tack that looks good, is comfortable and practical. If it is raining I will use rubber reins and it is always very important to make sure that if there is a ride judge that the tack will be the right size for them. The whole team is involved with decisions covering tack and the overall look, as when I am riding in the ring, it is the onlookers who can see what looks best.” For more information on Absorbine products visit www.absorbine.co.uk

horsey other half The Horsey Other Half - Carl Jones
Carl with Abbi’s horse, Janet
Carl Jones was a “proper townie”, according to his wife Abbi, when they first met twenty-three years ago. These days though, you will find Carl completely immersed in the country life, thanks to Abbi and her horses. Janet and the Shetlands
Name: Carl Jones Home-town: Whitehill, Hampshire Occupation: Production Manager Wife’s name: Abbi Jones When and Where Did You Meet? June 1995, we met at a shop where we both worked on Saturdays. When Did You Realise Your Wife Liked Horses? As soon as I met her Do You Ride Yourself? No chance! Favourite Horse? Evie, one of our miniature Shetlands, she is a lovely little pony and mischievous most of the time. How Do You Support Your Wife With Her Horses? I do as I’m told! Fence repairs, and I built her stables in 2000, that was the agreement for her marrying me. I pay for things, Abbi always says she will pay me back, but of course this doesn’t happen. What’s The Best Thing About Horses? Being outside, especially during the summer months, but I am not too interested in the winter months.
Abbi and Janet enjoying the South Downs Bloodhounds Fun Ride held in May 2017 at the Three Maids Chasers cross country course near Winchester
What’s The Worst Thing About Horses? Getting them ready for a show, it’s too stressful and everything seems to be left to the last minute. When you find out that all of this is for one class, you have to ask yourself, is this really worth the bother, and of course the answer from Abbi is, yes it is! Do You Go To Shows Or Competitions And If You Do What Sustains You Through The Day? Yes, cups of tea and the food van! And seeing Abbi happy of course.
Most Confusing Thing You’ve Ever Heard Her Say About A Horse? The more times you fall off makes you a better rider. What Advice Would You Offer To Anyone About To Marry A Woman Who Owns A Horse? Be prepared to come second best, the horse will always come first. Just think, happy wife, happy life.

f your horse has been spending longer in his stable this winter, you will understand just how difficult it can be sometimes to keep his mind occupied. With this in mind Silvermoor have developed two new products, both low in sugar and starch. Silvermoor Swingers are the only hanging forage block available on the market. Made from pure dried grass and a natural binder with no added sugar, the innovative design attaches to the rope (which can be bought separately) and is hung from a height in your stable. There are no corners on the block, so horses cannot get a firm grip on it, ensuring they are eaten slowly and over time. Made from 100% natural ingredients Silvermoor Swingers are low in sugar and low in starch. They provide a healthy addition to the horse’s diet and can be used as part of a weight management diet. They are safe to use for laminitics and good doers, as well as insulin resistant horses and those suffering from EMS.
Low sugar Treatsies
Silvermoor Treatsies are a brand new treat range that are low in sugar, low in starch and high in fibre. Made using only use the very best quality natural ingredients, they are both irresistibly delicious, yet healthy for your horse too. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory power house and has anti-oxidant properties too. FEED NEWS
T
he ideal condition for a horse is likely to vary according to the job he is intended for. However, to remain healthy, most condition should come from muscle and only a little from fat. For a horse needing to gain weight an essential starting point is to ensure his worm control regime covers all types and growth stages of parasites. Regular dental checks by a qualified equine dental technician or vet are also important to ensure he can chew his feed effectively.
Jayne Ross and Bloomfield Valhalla, Show Hunter of the Year at the Horse of the Year Show and fed on TopSpec
Ad-lib Forage
In order to achieve a good condition, ad-lib forage should form the basis of the diet. Spring grass, and/or early cut ryegrass haylage or hay, will generally have a higher protein and calorie content than other forage so will make a greater contribution to condition and topline. However, there are certain exceptions where this type of forage may not be suitable, for instance horses prone to laminitis or ‘fizzy’ behaviour. In these situations, a high-fibre, late-cut hay would be preferable. Hard feeds should be used to balance this forage diet for vitamins, minerals and trace elements, as well as supply further protein and calories to promote topline and condition.
Digestive Efficiency
Feed sizes need to be kept within the maximum meal size; for example, each meal that a 500kg horse receives must not exceed 2kg. Feeding more than this is counterproductive, as feed will be forced through the stomach and digestive system too quickly, reducing digestive efficiency. This means the horse will struggle to keep weight on despite the fact that they are receiving a considerable quantity of feed. For horses with high requirements, nutrient-dense products should be used, and meals given up to three to four times daily if necessary. Using a top specification feed balancer allows a horse to maximise his forage intake whilst minimising hard feed size. The best balancers will supply protein (amino acids), vitamins, minerals, trace elements and yeast products.
Building Blocks for Development
Top specification conditioning feed balancers contain high quality protein sources, which are rich in essential amino acids. This supplies the building blocks for muscle development and topline, although working in a correct outline is also vital for promoting muscle in the desired places. Yeast probiotics and Mannan Oligosaccharides (prebiotics) promote fibredigesting bacteria in the hindgut. The pure, protected yeast used in top specification feed balancers improves fibre digestibility by twenty percent. Adding an alfalfa or grass chop to the feed balancer will only make a limited contribution to condition due to the small quantity fed. Use only as much as necessary to prevent bolting. More significant improvements will be seen when adding an appropriate blend.
Feeding for Condition and Topline Words by nutritionists from the TopSpec Multiple Award-Winning-Helpline Conditioning Cubes
For highly strung horses, or others that need minimal sugar and starch in their diet, read the white label carefully to ensure the suitability of what is fed. Feeding for Performance
As your horses come out of a long hard winter and you look towards the competition season it is likely that you will need to adjust what you feed them. Here we look at a range of feeds and supplements which may help your horse look and perform his best this summer. TopSpec Performance Cubes
With a hard winter behind us, some horses may have lost weight over the colder months. if you need to encourage weight gain in an underweight horse or pony, or perhaps maintain condition in your show horse or pony, mollichaff Condition Complete may be the ideal feed choice. mollichaff Condition Complete is a highly digestible, high fibre, high oil and low starch blend in a single bag. it can be fed as a complete concentrate feed alongside good quality forage and contains a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement. This makes life easier for you as you don’t need to shop for anything else to feed other than good quality forage, because it contains all the dietary requirements your horse or pony needs. it is made from a balanced blend of alfalfa, dried grass, oat straw, fibre pellets, barley, soya flakes, soya oil and mint, plus yeasacc - a natural live yeast culture - and a prebiotic to help maintain a healthy digestive system. essential fatty acids are provided by the soya oil to help maintain healthy skin and encourage a glossy coat. Because mollichaff Condition Complete is a fibre-based feed, it provides a more natural way of feeding your horse or pony compared to a high cereal diet. The addition of mint makes mollichaff Condition Complete particularly appealing to horses. www.horsehage.co.uk
British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet Fibre-Beet is a versatile, super-fibre conditioning feed and when fed alongside a balanced diet can improve energy intake in competition horses whilst keeping fibre levels at an optimum. Offering an excellent source of highly digestible fibre in a soaked form, Fibre-Beet is excellent in aiding rapid rehydration and provides slow release energy without the ‘fizz’. Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of Speedi-Beet with added high quality alfalfa for optimum condition and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. alfalfa can also help with topline or simply help maintain weight and a healthy, shiny coat. a good range of minerals, trace elements and amino acids are provided and it has a low sugar and starch content making it suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis. Fibre-Beet is ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and can help maintain healthy gut function, especially for those travelling to events when feeding may become disrupted. it can be used to help maintain gut fill and hydration during intense exercise. Fibre-Beet also has added biotin for hoof quality and can be soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or just 15 minutes in warm/hot water. www.britishhorsefeeds.com
TopSpec performance Cubes are ideal for horses that need to be performing at their very best whilst staying focussed whatever the occasion. The cubes provide energy for work, but are ‘Non-Heating’ and are ideal for horses that need to maintain their concentration or are a bit sharp. performance Cubes are designed to be added to a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement and therefore contain no added vitamins or trace-elements, but they have been supplemented with the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. They are formulated without the use of any cereal-grains, so they are not just ‘oat-free’ or ‘barley-free’ but completely cereal-grain-free. They also have a good energy level of 12.5mJ/kg, equivalent to most cereal-containing compound feeds designed to support hard work. The formula is low in starch and sugar, and high in good quality protein and fibre. The highly digestible fibre in these cubes helps to promote the beneficial bacteria in the hindgut therefore helping to maintain a healthy digestive system. www.topspec.com
Dodson & Horrell Fibre Performance a fibre based muesli for performance horses. The oat free forage based muesli is blended with grains and fibres, to provide a balanced energy release. Fibre performance provides key amino acids to support muscle development and repair, as well as electrolytes to help replace losses that occur as part of regular training. a fully balanced feed including chelated minerals for optimum absorption and activity in the body. The easy to feed formula includes alfalfa and grass chaff, so no added chaff is needed. www.dodsonandhorrell.com
Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes Baileys Top line Conditioning Cubes promote weight gain and condition, providing highly digestible calories and top quality protein, so they do exactly what their name suggests. Now boosted with additional antioxidants, from grapeseed extract, vitamins C and e and organic selenium, the run down or hard working horse will benefit from extra support for the immune system. With a probiotic yeast and digest plus prebiotic “top line cubes” also help encourage digestive efficiency and all without the need to add a balancer or muscle supplement, when fed at recommended levels. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

Equine America Super So-Kalm equine america Super So-Kalm contains a premium grade magnesium with l-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid associated with the production of serotonin, to calm and focus the horse. Fed daily, this can aid concentration and willingness to work, without removing the edge required for competition. young horses can have a tendency to be highly strung and distracted, leading to training problems in the future. Feeding young horses Super So-Kalm in their first season will help them to relax and ensure that their new experiences are good ones. www.equine-america.co.uk
