ooking through this issue it is hard to believe rained stopped play, quite as much as it did, most of the pictures appear to have been taken in glorious sunshine. And hopefully it will be returning in time for the Hickstead Derby Meeting and a summer of great sporting events. Last year I had the chance to talk with the official vet at the Royal International Horse Show, who explained to me just how easily horses and ponies can become de-hydrated in the hot weather. She said that the grooms of the competition horses, whether show jumpers or eventers are used to dealing with them in the heat, but said she was treating quite a few small ponies who had been competing at Hickstead, who had become de-hydrated. It is important to remember just how long you are on your ponies sometimes. Remember, particularly during the hot summer months when they are sweating when you ride them, that they may need their electrolytes replaced. Turn to page 70 to find out more. We have a stand at both the Derby and the Royal International (No 79A), just along from the funnel to the main arena, so do come and say hello. We do love meeting you all and hearing about your horses and what you have planned for the rest of the year. As always there are lots of competitions and prizes to be won and don’t forget there are two free entry tickets on page 39. The summer is looking to be busy, so have a good one and if you are out competing and have a good result, don’t forget to let us know.

Put to the test: Aloe Super Hydrating Moisturiser Aloe Super Hydrating Moisturiser from Eternal Skincare has a large following of people who love their outdoor lifestyle but don’t want the health of their hands to suffer as a result. The high percentage (over 50%) of organically grown aloe vera in the cream offers soothing relief for damaged skin, leaving hands feeling velvety soft and smooth and looking less chapped and wrinkled. The exquisitely rich moisturiser also contains sweet almond oil, rich in essential fatty acids to nourish the skin, and rosehip oil which, due to its naturally high vitamin A content, helps repair damaged skin tissue. Roman chamomile extract helps to promote cell regeneration while shea butter keeps skin feeling silky soft and elegantly smooth. Eternal Skincare’s Aloe Super Hydrating Moisturiser is a luxurious treat for the hands, but isn’t exclusively for this part of the body. In fact, it can be used all over the body and face, making it a one pot wonder for dry and stressed skin from head to toe. LR Says: This is a great all round moisturiser. Like most horse riders, my hands are constantly dry, but I have found this easily absorbed and nourishing. It has been particularly good for areas which have been a little bit sun burnt too. Available exclusively from www.eternalskincare.com from £30 for 225ml. Order online or by phone on 0800 993 0122.

news Voltaire Saddles Sponsor Kate Lukas Voltaire Design Saddles have recently become a new sponsor to professional international event rider Kate Lukas (30) who is keen to promote the new range of saddles on the UK event circuit. Over the past few months Kate has worked closely with saddle fitter Habib Treca to custom design her own saddles to suit her and her horses’ needs. Kate is delighted with how her position has been improved and how well her horses have responded to the saddles. Treca said: “Kate is a smashing rider with super horses and Voltaire Design saddles are proud to be sponsors of Kate and to be working with her for success.” Voltaire design saddles are a new brand of saddle, which combines the best French saddle making techniques with a unique fashionable flair. The management team has over 40 years of experience in the equestrian industry, and their goal is not only to provide customers with a high end product, but to work with each client individually and craft a saddle which will help improve their riding and the performance of the horse. The fundamental belief is that by keeping the rider in a more balanced, natural position, the pressure points on the horse are reduced and therefore enables both the horse and rider to fulfil their potential. For more information email: habib@voltaire-design.com

What the customers say: Emma from Kent, said: “The attention to detail was really impressive. Having a 17.2hh warmblood meant I had literally spent hundreds of hours surfing and researching what horsebox I should get so that both of us were completely safe - after all should someone go into the back of you, who wants half a ton of horse landing on your head! And boy was I surprised at the number of companies offering what was in fact a cardboard box on wheels – and one that didn’t look particularly nice at that. Equi-star was completely different. Firstly they are a family run business and to support local business is always good thing in my book. But most importantly their spec is exceptional and without a doubt one of the best on the market. The safety of both the horse and passengers was paramount and had been carefully considered. The attention to detail from both Karen and David was really impressive – they have horses and that really came through with fantastic little touches.” To read more about what Emma wrote and to find out about the three designs of Equistar horsebox: Artemis, Athena and Hermes then visit www.kenthorseboxes.co.uk

aroque horses, such as the Andalusian horses are some of the oldest Lusitano, Friesian, Lipizzaner saddle horses in and Andalusian breeds, have a Western Europe unique heritage as the oldest saddle horses in Western Europe. The term Baroque does not represent a breed specifically, but a group of breeds that rose to prominence in Europe during the Baroque era, in the 17th and 18th centuries. This type of riding horse is increasing in popularity in the UK, despite the fact there are said to be to less than 5,000 productive purebred Lusitano mares worldwide, currently. Breeder and equine photographer Risto Aaltonen, who provided the beautiful photos in this article, says the Lusitano is a very special breed of horse. “They are sensitive, trainable, loyal and very talented – once you have owned a Lusitano, you will never go back!” he says.

Dressage divas

Below: Baroque riding horses are increasingly popular with UK owners looking for kind, trainable mounts

Spanish-type horses have a great affinity to dressage, thanks to their extravagant paces, noble appearance and excellent conformation and strength. They tend to have a short-coupled body, with good bone density – taking the Lusitano as an example, their height usually ranges from 15.1hh to 16hh, meaning they are widely suited to men and women, and are quite stocky. They tend to have powerful hindquarters, and a muscular, naturally arched neck. Because of their shorter body stature, Lusitanos have a talent for collected work, but this means they should also be trained to elongate their frame, otherwise they may develop a choppy stride. This creates a shorter gait with more concussive risks to the limbs and joints. It isn’t uncommon to see such a horse with a tense back, when ridden – his muscles have probably developed in a tense manner because he hasn’t been correctly worked through his body, or has an ill-fitting saddle. Naturally, lots of work using transitions to develop an active hind leg and a more ‘long and low’ carriage will help, as will a saddle designed for his conformation.

Common conformational issues

feature Owners of Baroque horses often ride at high levels of dressage

Baroque-star By David Kempsell of First Thought Equine

Baroque horses tend to have a shortcoupled body with good conformation

The WOW baroque, with its carbon fibre tree

Common conformational issues where Lusitanos and similar breeds are concerned include a short thoracic vertebra, eg. the area that begins at the withers and extends to the lumbar vertebra. Because they can be short-coupled, the length of the rib cage from front to back in this type of horse can also be quite short, and this of course represents the bearing structure for a saddle. A steeply sloping final rib, common in these breeds, also limits the length of the saddle that will fit the horse. (And in fact, it is not uncommon for horses to be missing a rib, so they have 17 instead of 18). Therefore, riders and owners of Lusitanos often find that saddle fitting can be troublesome. This is partly due to the fact that this breed has a short back as described above, and partly because riders of Lusitanos often ride at high levels of dressage, where the horse requires a great deal of expression and lots of swinging movements through the back and quarters – limitations in a less-than-perfect saddle may not become obvious until the horse is asked to perform such challenging movements. Fortunately, Kent-based First Thought Equine has launched the WOW Baroque saddle especially for these types of horses. It is aimed at classical dressage riders that wish to use a classical, Spanish style of saddle that is often seen on Baroque horses, such as the Lusitano and Andalusian breeds, but want a technologicallyadvanced saddle with all the attributes of standard WOW saddles. The WOW Baroque has been designed to face the conformational challenges of the Baroque horse, and features the unique WOW carbon fibre tree, which moves with the horse’s shoulders. For an extravagantly-moving horse such as the Lusitano, this is very important. It is vital that they are not restricted at the shoulders, so they can move as nature intended. The Baroque also comes with extra wide gullet fittings and has the option of Flair air bag flocking, which reduces pressure on the saddle’s bearing surface, for ultimate equine performance and comfort. (Wool flocking is also available). The WOW Baroque Saddle costs £2,026. Top summer tips By George Gorman, inventor of the RS-tor rider safety aid

The competitive season is here, and many of us are out competing, cross country schooling, fittening our horses and enjoying lengthy hacks. It is what the summer is about! Put in the homework

If you are jumping this summer, one of the most important areas to address at the beginning of the competitive season is actually flatwork. It is the basis for all jumping work, and is all too often compromised. Successful clear-round jumping riding relies on a balanced, supple way of going. The horse must be in front of the leg, going forwards into an accepting rein contact, with a clear connection from the rider’s leg. But your pre-event schooling doesn’t have to focus on actual jumping, or faster work – in fact, you can improve the quality of the horse’s walk by quietly riding transitions. One of the simplest exercises to use to improve the quality of the horse’s walk, and his responses to your transitional aids, is the walk / halt transition. This is easy to carry out, and can even be carried out when hacking; all you need is a straight track, and a safe place to carry out the exercise, e.g. a quiet bridleway that you know. Here’s a simple exercise from riding instructor Michaela Huntington, also the current National Amateur Show Jumping Champion: After you have warmed up on a longer rein, start by walking the horse in a straight line, with a good rein contact. The walk should be relaxed, ‘forward’ and active. Make sure you’re happy with the walk before asking for a halt. Use your normal halt aids – the horse’s reaction should be immediate; try to improve slow reaction times, as you will need a responsive horse when jumping. Once you have halted, sit quietly. The horse should ideally be relaxed, waiting for the leg aid - so when it is given, it is a definite instruction. Apply your walk aids with an allowing hand. Repeat the exercise; you can build up to just three or four steps of walk in between each halt transition.

Instructor Michaela Huntington enjoys helping riders of all ages improve their jumping skills. She says flatwork is the basis for all jumping work. Left: When jumping, your job is to present the horse at the correct pace and take off point, and his job is to jump it for you. Right: Practising at a local cross country venue is the ideal way to prepare for the season, without the pressure of having to complete a course. Don’t forget your RSTor, pictured in use here! open-space venue is a great fun day out, and a chance to open the horse up, work on seeing a stride and develop mutual trust. You can develop stamina, practice bogey fences, and work on your horse’s confidence in your own time. Remember to take an RS-tor riding safety aid; it is an ideal accessory for jumping enthusiasts, as it provides extra stability; perfect for riders with young or excitable horses, and for boosting rider confidence. (Visit www.rstor.co.uk for info.)

Fitness training

A key factor for preparing your horse for the competitive season is fitness. This equates to hours of dedicated schooling, flat work, pole work and jumping, interspersed with gentle hacks and roadwork to relax and reward your horse’s concentration. Roadwork helps strengthen his tendons, as his legs must be in perfect condition to compete.

Develop team work between you and your horse

You must understand each other as much as possible when jumping, according to Michaela. “Good horses are usually very forgiving and if you can get it right most of the time, they will often help where they can if they understand your signals,” she says. “Many of my pupils are frustrated at not being able to get it 100% right all the time – I tell them, there’s rarely such a thing as a perfect show jumping round – even at top levels! If you can get it 80 – 90% right most of the time, your horse will happily provide the little bit extra needed if he trusts you. Your job is to present the horse at the correct pace and take off point and his job is to jump it for you.”

Take your horse to a cross country training venue

Practising at a local cross country venue is the ideal way to prepare for the season, without the pressure of having to complete a course. Even if you are not normally a cross country rider, getting out to an july 2012 Localrider 15

Photography by Alex Kelly, Equi-national and Peter James

Kent-based Roanna Hamilton caught the showing bug young and with a growing string of impressive youngsters as well as her striking coloured, Nantllesg Elwyn, we sent Alex Kelly along to find out more.

oanna Hamilton from Dover has started to build up a successful string of show horses and ponies with the assistance of her mother, Sue. Having ridden from the age of three, horses have always been a big part of her life. She began showing by chance when she was asked to ride a Welsh section B, Harwood Jasmine. She and Jasmine competed in the Mountain and Moorland classes where together they gained experience and success. Having worked her way up the ranks she is now a regular competitor at the major county shows. She has had a great start to the 2012 season, with her new ride Nantllesg Elwyn. In just five outings to date the pair, who came together last winter, have claimed the Overall Coloured Supreme title at Ponies UK Winter Championships and qualified for the RIHS. Roanna has a carefully thought out campaign for the coming summer and she and Nantllesg Elwyn are looking forward to competing at a number of county shows, but her ultimate ambition would be to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show.

Life on the side of a hill It would not be unfair to say that Roanna’s facilities are basic, her show horses also live out twenty four seven, she has no sand school and her fields are all on a slope. While some showing yards might see this as a disadvantage, Roanna sees this as a strength, her ponies go on any terrain and no camber to a ring is a worry for her. While Sue is always on hand to offer advice, “she is great horsewoman and she taught me a lot of what I know now” Roanna tells us. She also trains with Val Sheehan, who helped her find Elwyn and has been a constant source of support. As an amateur, she also works part time and dedicates every other spare moment to the horses, she has found inspiration by watching the country’s leading professionals, such as Jayne Webber and Katie Jerram. “I learn so much watching them and the results they have achieved are amazing!” As well as the ridden showing Roanna enjoys competing in the in hand classes and bringing on young horses and ponies such as Hopgarden Morning Chorus and Murraybrook Marquesa.

Homebred Champions Not content with just showing quality animals, Roanna and Sue have also started to breed some future champion contenders, with the likes of Bonnie Excalibur, an Anglo Arab / show hack. His dam, Wacella, has racehorse royalty in her pedigree, going

Roanna and Elwyn at home

back to Najinski and Cruise Missile, while his sire is a successful Anglo Arabian, Surfraz. Excalibur is more than living up to his blue blood breeding, as a youngster he stood in hand Champion at Orsett County and Champion horse at The National Amateur Summer Show. Now aged four, he is starting his ridden career, but Roanna feels he needs the summer to mature before

he begins showing. Waiting in the wings, is two-year-old full brother, Bleanwood Rapscallion, who has potential to be a small hunter. With Roanna’s hard work and dedication it won’t be long before we report that she is HOYS bound, and who knows in the near future, it might be with one of her home bred horses as well as the charismatic Elwyn.

Life on the Yard feature

It is fascinating just how much happens on a yard in the space of a month. I thought I would kick off this new series with some stories about the horses and their owners at the yard where I keep my own horse, Isaacs Farm, near Tunbridge Wells. I am Irish

A

N

utwood Kinglet aka Tigger is owned by Mercedes Fehler, who together with her brother Danny, manages Isaacs Farm. Mercedes bought the five-yearold, Irish Draught X Thoroughbred a month ago and the pair have already formed a winning combination, heading an Intro dressage class at Bedgebury on their first outing together. Primarily bought to show, Mercedes plans to continue Tigger’s dressage education over the winter ready for the 2013 show season, when she hopes to compete in Small Hunter classes and if all goes well, Ladies Side Saddle classes too. Mercedes’ brother, Danny, will help with Tigger’s ring experience and plans to ride him at Kent County and the Edenbridge & Oxted Show.

my Collier has owned the rising seven-yearold Irish bred pony, I am Irish, for almost two years, however, setbacks, which have included an out of line pelvis, have meant that Irish hasn’t seen as much of the world as some young horses. Amy has taken time and patience to allow Irish to build up gradually, only more recently upping his workload with guidance from her trainer, Psyche Dell. Amy’s hard work played dividends when she and Irish won a prize at their first ever competition together in the Intro B Dressage at Bedgebury Equestrian Centre. Amy plans to continue taking Irish to dressage competitions as well as some unaffiliated show jumping shows over the winter, with the aim of jumping affiliated in 2013. A professional pole dancer, Amy runs training classes in the New Eltham area, which are most popular with new mums wanting to lose their baby fat. She also runs her own online vintage clothing business.

ydney arrived on the 31st May, a wonderful coloured package, who takes life in his stride. His dam Echo aka Pakor Dekor is a Polish Warmblood by Sandreo out of Paula and his sire is the Dutch Warmblood , Sambertino. Sydney and Echo are owned by Liz and Jon Porter who also own Sydney’s halfsister, Paris and a stunning eventer called Ginny, who they bought earlier this year. The couple who met through horses just over five years ago are currently getting to know Ginny’s gears, with the help of their trainer, Psyche Dell.

ine-year-old Harriet Bailey is the youngest person at Isaacs Farm, but she is also one of the most successful. She has qualified her pony Ffynnonbach Sanstorm aka Storm for two Championship classes at the Royal International Horse Show (turn to page 37 to read more). As well as showing, Harriet is a regular member of the Eridge Branch of the Pony Club and enjoyed a jumping rally with Angie Whittington during half-term. Harriet will be takinger her new pony, Pebbles, to Pony Club over the summer and hopes to compete in Nursery Stakes Working Hunter classes in 2013.

Northern Adventure

orthern Adventure aka Norman is the newest arrival at Isaacs Farm, although he isn’t completely new as he lived at Isaacs many years ago. Norman is owned by Jo Lane (nee Caprille), who keeps her own horse Bally at the yard, but he has been loaned out for a number of years. Returning to the yard very recently he is now loaned by 14-year-old Kirsten Poulsom, a pupil at Hillview School in Tonbridge. Norman is an 18-year-old, warmblood, by Abraham, who Kirsten hopes to do a bit of everything on. With the school holidays approaching they have plenty of time to get to know each other.

Kirsten Poulsom is looking forward to getting to know her new horse, Norman, over the summer holidays

y own horse, Rhine Maiden aka Emily, doesn’t get to go out and about as much as she would like, as I tend to be busy reporting for Localrider Magazine. However, she celebrated her twenty-first birthday this month and I thought that deserved a mention.

Clare Hassan Clare Hassan (nee Baker) is lucky to have two horses to jump on the affiliated circuit. She has her own, Orasa and her mother, Sue Sparrow’s Ola d’ete:

Orasa

C

lare said: “My horse, Orasa is now 15 and I have had her for eight years. She is a Dutch warmblood by Concorde, who is sweet, but very sharp. She spent a couple of years in the field, while I had my children, Holly (5) and Charlie (3) and I hope this break has added a couple of years to her career. I finally reached my goal with her last year of reaching Grade B (£1,000 notional winnings). Having children has improved my patience and made me more determined to enjoy and appreciate every minute I can with the horses, as well as forcing me to be more relaxed about the schooling and fitness that the horses get, it’s not just about me now but two little people also.

Ola d’ete

M

y Mum Sue stables her horse Ola at same yard as me. She is a massive help taking on all the mucking out and care at the weekends, she accompanies me to all the shows (alongside Kirsten Poulsom) and helps out with her granny groom services on the days that the children come with us. She can often be seen child in one hand, horse in the other, with a rucksack full of sustenance on her back! Her horse, Ola d’ete, is a 10-year-old Selle Fransais with Jalisco bloodlines. She takes the place of a very special boy ‘Ginge’ who we lost the day before my wedding last year due to a cancerous tumour in his nasal passage. Ola was a mare that had been partially written off due to lameness and had been put in foal to the Brendon Stud’s Warrior. She produced a beautiful foal ‘Queenie’ in 2010 and after the loss of Ginige it was time for Ola to come back into work. She had winnings with her past owner, but it has only been this year that she has been out on the circuit with us. We have had a few promising placings in 1m and 1.05m classes so far, but we are still on the learning curve of dealing with spookiness at times. I live by the mantra that the bad times make the good times good, and in the words of my Dad who provides a sympathetic ear when it all goes wrong....’you don’t want to peak to early!’ This year I aim to do all the Hickstead Meetings as well as a trip to Wales and also to get both horses jumping consistently around the 1.10m level.” If you would like to see your yard featured in Localrider then contact Fiona by email: fiona@localrider.co.uk If you are chosen to be featured you should be able to supply high resolution images and brief details about the horses and their owners being featured.

From Darley to Dressage FEATURE

Over recent months we have been following Emma Clarke and her ex-racehorse, Lexcen, who she bought from Darley Rehoming (www.darleyrehoming.co.uk) as they prepared for the Hickstead Unaffiliated Dressage Championships. Here Emma continues their story.

F

ollowing on from a month of mixed results I’d vowed to go away and train hard leading up to the SE Championship at Hickstead. Lex saw the chiropractor who found a few areas of tension, but nothing hideous; I also purchased a Wintec Isabell a must for Lex as he keeps changing shape and finally I spoke to Simone Highmore at Allen & Page who advised a few feeding adjustments. Everything in order, I have been concentrating on schooling, lunging in a pessoa and hacking - to give Lex a chance to relax. I have been training with Andy Ford since I bought Lex and have plenty of exercises to work on from transitions to lateral work, but mainly focussing on our canter work, which is a weakness. I felt as prepared for Hickstead as I was ever going to be and on Saturday 26th May I headed off. I do not jest when I say it was the hottest day of 2012, however this played to my advantage as Lex was more relaxed. I was careful not to overcook (pardon the pun) Lex in the warm-up before heading in to the Jaap Arena. Despite being incredibly nervous in the morning, my nerves seemed to have subsided as I went through the test in my head before going in to the arena. We received a good score of 66% and were placed fifth in the class. The most exciting part for me was being part of the mounted presentation and cantering round the International arena – I am also the proud recipient of a lovely ‘Hickstead’ rug. Saturday behind me, Sunday was a day that I hoped to chalk up as experience. I kept the warm-up short again due to the heat and headed to the International Arena for the test. Lex turned in one of his best performances. I really could not have asked any more from him. We received another good score of 64% and we were

rewarded with another fifth place. It was a great experience to ride at Hickstead and with this now behind me, it’s time to move on to affiliated dressage. Next time I write, showing aside, it will be from the point of view of a newly affiliated rider. Very exciting but equally daunting. Emma and Lexcen are sponsored by AVTrinity, a Tunbridge Wells based, Independent Financial Adviser. For more updates on their progress visit www.avtrinity.com

A Bit of an Investment Y

ou could argue that your horse’s bit is the most important piece of equipment that you will invest in. People often spend hundreds of pounds on the perfect saddle as back health is vital and they want a comfortable ride, so why opt for a cheap, poorly made bit when horse’s mouths are so sensitive? Positive changes that have happened in modern bitting are that we now know more about the conformation of the horse and in particular the mouth and we realise that using well balanced and well made bits is very sensible. We know that spending £1000 or more on a saddle and £20 on a bit if we think about it is not realistic. The negative side to modernisation is there are some very poorly made bits on the market, both in the cheap and the more expensive categories with no balance or particular theory behind how they work or how to use them. There are more choices of competition and environment now whereas historically the single jointed Snaffle, the Double Bridle and the Pelham were your adequate choices (unless your horse was a carriage horse), for all that was required of the horse. Realistically you should still keep traditional values - always buy a bit that looks well made and looks equal and symmetrical to the eye. The bit should feel comfortable to handle, it is after all to go in your horse’s mouth so if you don’t like the action neither will he. And lastly have a good idea of how your choice of bit works so you can access if it is going to be comfortable for your horse and give you the right signals to do the job you need it for. Abbey bits enjoy an unrivalled reputation for the supply of quality made bits in the UK and overseas. Made in the UK and with no minimum order, they are the favoured brand name with leading professional and amateur riders alike, looking for quality and innovation from a supplier specialising in traditional and unusual bits. With over 200 different bit patterns in stock and the ability to meet demand, Abbey are also able to capture and follow bit trends, supplying specialist bits in a wide variety of sizes. The vast range includes Snaffles, Gags, Pelhams, Double Bridles, Driving Bits, Hackamores, Sweet Irons and a variety of rubber and vulcanite bits. Abbey made to measure bits can easily be customised from existing parts and they offer superb comfort and quality. Available in various materials, including copper, stainless steel, sweet iron and vulcanite.

Not Just Any Bits... These Are Abbey Bits

Q: I have seen Elevator bits in some of the competitions I attend please can you tell me how the Elevator works? The Elevator bit works on very strong leverage so would have to be used by riders who have sensitive hands and the ability to yield when the horse responds to the signals that the bit gives. The Elevator should be used on a horse that responds positively to firm downward poll pressure and strong lower jaw leverage. The Elevator is a bit that works on leverage action. The longer the shank above the mouthpiece, the more downward pull there is on the poll. The longer the shank below the mouthpiece, the more leverage on the tongue, the bars of the mouth and the lower jaw. It should be used with double reins; the top rein when used does not activate too much downward poll pressure so most of the action is in the mouth and the corners of the lips depending on the mouthpiece used. When the bottom rein is activated you get a lot more poll action and very strong leverage on the lower jaw. Not usually used with a curb chain but sometimes with a low fitting curb strap to prevent the cheek from rotating too far. The bit comes in a wide variety of mouthpieces the action in the mouth does also change a little with each different mouthpiece. Varying the contact between the two sets of reins ensure that the pressures are kept even and no one pressure overrides another.

Dragonfly Saddlery’s visit to Neue Schule Bits Sue Paine from Dragonfly Saddlery had an interesting trip to Neue Schule Bits’ HQ in Stokesely in North Yorkshire and here she shares details of her fascinating visit.

N

eue Schule Bits is headed up by Heather Hyde. She has had a lifetime of experience with horses: breeding, riding, producing and now as one of the country’s leading lorinery experts. The day started with the famed Yorkshire hospitality – teas and coffees on tap! We then moved on to the main topics of the day, namely how modern thinking on bitting and research into the structure of the horse’s mouth has led to radical redesigning of some old favourites. We began with a short film featuring Dr. Graham Cross, from Durham University, talking about the use of the NS Salox Gold. This metal is exclusive to Neue Schule and is a closely guarded blend of metals including copper, which has a scientifically proven high level of Thermal Conductivity. In layman terms, this means that it quickly warms up to blood temperature and is less likely to be viewed as a foreign body by the horse, enabling the horse to feel more comfortable in his mouth more quickly. Stainless steel has a very low level of Thermal Conductivity. This results in the bit feeling colder for longer which can result in a horse either backing off the contact, pushing his tongue against the bit, leading to tongue evasions or taking a strong hold and leaning on the bit. The reasons for stainless steel becoming the main metal for bit manufacture is price - stainless steel is a very cheap metal, it’s ready availability and it is easy to work with. Neue Schule use CAD – Computer Aided Design - which means that many small alterations can be made and swiftly evaluated. It also means that bits can be correctly scaled up or down in size with no loss of proportion. This is vital when making bits ranging in size from 4” to 6.5”. Neue Schule have redesigned some old favourites, resulting in some important improvements along the way. The NS Starter bit is recommended in place of a breaking bit with keys. Young horses do need a bit that encourages them to seek forward and accept the contact, but the old fashioned breaking bit with keys can

often result in tongue evasions where the young horse is trying to avoid the feel of the keys against the tongue. The NS Team Up bit replaces the French Link. I think the picture below says it all!

This French Link was purchased recently from a local saddlers The straight arms make no allowance for the tongue’s sensitive outer edges

The flat French Link exposes the loops causing uncomfortable pressure points The flat edge often causes trauma

Proud loops dig into the tongue

Proud loops that may dig into the upper plate

Heather also emphasised the need to check our horse’s mouths every time we ride. It should be as natural as checking your horse’s back and legs after un-tacking. We also discussed Bit Banks and everyone agreed they were a very good thing. I felt very smug that ours has been up and running for a year now, with terrific results. It is always good to meet the people who manufacture the products we sell. Normally our only chance to meet is at BETA, which can get very hectic, so it was a luxury to have the time to chat and go into far more depth about the bits and the vision behind them. Heather’s main theme is control without severity. Whether you hack simply for pleasure, or compete at any level, Neue Schule Bits will have a bit to suit your horse or pony.

Laura Powell writes...

Laura and Alf at Eridge Pic by Alex Bunn

So I’m ‘over’ Badminton. The good news is that BE have rescheduled the 2012 championships to run at Badminton next year - hooray! It would just be ‘another’ event if it was held elsewhere plus, I want to ride through THE lAKE! I’m feeling really positive at the moment and its all systems go. Borde Hill had cracking weather. It was boiling with a breeze that made it bearable. A lovely big bold cross country course that you can just keep rolling to is one of the great features of Borde Hill, plus the fact that it isn’t a dressage competition. The undulating show jumping arena plays a massive part and you have to be able to leave the coloured poles up. So if your show jumping is a weakness consider your options before this event. Then again jumping a clear is a feel good achievement! Alf, who is normally fairly reliable show jumping came a cropper, with two down. I was trying out some new brakes and was a bit of a passenger, rather than riding him. But a good dressage and a clear cross country still left him ninth. Spud meanwhile stepped up to the mark and finished on his dressage score and was in the money again in third place.

insure both and saVe money

An old fashioned event

Next I headed to Eridge. A good old fashioned event with a big hill! Dressage went to pot on both horses, they both scored over 40. Both had the same show jump down - first horse I didn’t do enough, second horse I over did it - law of sod. Alf flew round the cross country - I took a couple of long routes as we haven’t been round a novice since last year, but he is just so quick and clever with a great conscience. Spud was going great guns until I got half way round and it was like he died on me, lost interest and had enough. After a few too many run outs I pulled him up. A few days later we realised that he’d injured his shoulder, probably due to some jarring, as the ground was hard and he’s not a blood horse. Hopefully he’s all fixed and will be ready for an easy trip round BCA.

Jumping at the Area Show

Today I’ve just got home from the British Showjumping Kent Area Show. A long day, with two horses. Spud is still recouperating, so I took Alf and the old witch, Daisy. She couldn’t believe her luck. I had actually taken her to a show (after 5 years!) and a big show - everyone was there to see her obviously! She put on her best behaviour - lots of mincing round the collecting ring. We jumped the 1m Open on a ticket and just rolled a pole when we had a slight disagreement over which distance we were going on. Really after all the years I should just shut up and let her do it her way! More importantly she was keen and jumped well. All being well she is entered for a BE100 in the next few weeks. Alf was brilliant at the show. Although I had four faults in both the 1.05m and Newcomers jump-offs, these were my mistakes where I just let him get a little flat. But he was rideable. I had a canter and I was able to go forward without being run away with - maybe a breakthrough at last?! This, I feel is down to my recent lesson with Henry Turrell where I learnt so much in an hour. He explains what to do around the course where to be still, leg, hold etc and has really helped me. He also has me cantering Alf round his big school in a forward canter on the buckle! luckily his fence around the school isn’t overly jumpable otherwise I would think twice about this!

Super slick: why gel continues to stick By Stephen Biddlecombe of World Wide Tack

M

any people ask me what Gel Eze products, which include leg wraps and a wide range of under saddle pads, are made from. The answer is a high-grade polymer with ingredients added that give Gel Eze its own unique ‘DNA’ – so you could say it is a closely guarded secret! Although widely copied today, when launched these were completely innovative products that hadn’t been previously used in equestrianism. Gel Eze is non toxic, and possesses the shock absorbing characteristics of a liquid; it can be placed directly on the horse’s back and also onto the legs. It can be shaped and cut to different thicknesses, retains its temperature very well, and works very well as a protective pad. One of its most popular forms is use as an Under Bandage, as when placed in a freezer, it absorbs and retains enough of its temperature to be used as an excellent cold compress. When we introduced gel pads into numnahs and pads, these products revolutionised the saddle pad industry. Saddle pads allow us to enhance the benefits that a saddle gives, and a quality gel pad can enhance the fit of some saddles. (A study in the Veterinary Journal found that maximum overall force to the horse’s back was reduced in up to 61.1% of subjects when gel pads were used in wide-treed saddles!)

Why should you use a saddle pad? • • • •

To help dissipate heat To prevent the saddle from becoming sweaty, and slipping In some cases, to assist the saddle in dispersing pressure To absorb moisture - a natural material such a wool will provide a moisture barrier without causing further heat • To reduce saddle slippage • To provide impact-absorption If you have a saddle that does not fit properly, contact a saddle fitter for advice. Saddle pads should enhance the benefits a saddle gives, not compromise its fit further.

What purpose does your saddle pad serve?

‘Ask your saddle fitter for advice concerning pads that would suit your saddle, and its fit’.

We have a range of saddle pads available – here are the best sellers from www.worldwidetack.com: The Gel-Eze Sheepskin Pad with Gel-Eze (or Gelly) has comfort cushions at the shoulder to aid comfort over fences, and additionally under the point of the saddle tree, and either side of the The Gel-Eze Sheepskin Pad with Gel-Eze spine. The pad prevents lateral movement of the saddle and offers unique shock absorption properties. Price: £74.25 exc VAT. The Gel Eze Super Wither Pad (or Octopus pad), has been specially designed to cater for high withers. It has been constructed with two panels on the underside that taper away from the front to back, filling any voids on either side of the horse’s wither. The Wither Pad can be placed directly on the horse’s back to reduce saddle slippage, and offers impact-absorption. RRP: Around The Gel Eze Super Wither Pad £36.75 exc VAT . The Hi-Tech Gel Eze Impression Pad can be placed directly on the horse’s back to reduce saddle slippage, and offer impact-absorption. The underside of the half-pad boasts a special soft foam material called Sympa Nova - this enhances the product’s anti-slip properties and also maintains temperature, without causing overheating. Who will dazzle in the show ring? Photography by EquiNational, ES Photography, Horse Power Photography and David Miller

It’s that time of year again when the cream of the horse world converge on Hickstead for the Royal International Horse Show and once again there will be plenty of local riders heading to the Sussex showground. Alex Kelly caught up with a few of them to find out who they have qualified and which classes they are contending. Good luck to everyone who has qualified, sorry we didn’t get a chance to mention all of you. Also don’t forget to stop by and say hello to the team at the Localrider stand (we are next to the Organisers Office)!

Jayne Webber and Comberton Clancy, 2011 Supreme Champions, pictured with Martin Clunes

Team Webber / Bardo Jayne Webber and Carol Bardo have set a personal record with twenty horses qualified for the RIHS. The Surreybased team is set not only for a busy, but exciting week at Hickstead. Carol is looking forward to seeing the younger horses compete at the prestigious event for the first time, in particular Aidensfield Rupert in the coloured classes and Broadshard Simplicity in the large Show Hacks. “We always look forward to the cobs and hunters enjoying the fantastic arenas and really being able to gallop” Carol tells us, “and of course, we are keeping everything crossed that Comberton Clancy (2011 Winston Churchill Supreme Champion) will once again have a fantastic show.” 36 Localrider july 2012

Harriet Bailey and Ffynnonbach Sandstorm Harriet Bailey, from Bidborough in Kent, will be enjoying her first taste of Hickstead action with Ffynnonbach Sandstorm. Harriet and the 11-yearold, striking Welsh section A, have built up a strong partnership over the last year and qualified for the Heritage Mountain and Moorland First Ridden at The South of England Spring Show. The shoiw was doubly successful for them when they also qualified for the Ponies UK Young Riders Mountain and Moorland Small Breeds Championship. Nine-year-old Harriet, who is a pupil at Holmewood House in Langton Green, only needs to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show to top off an already super season and will be starting her quest at the Hickstead Derby Meeting. The summer also includes Pony Club activities with the Eridge Branch, BSPS Summer Champs and a few more working hunter classes. Harriet and Storm finished second in the Heritage Mountain and Moorland Cradle Stakes at BSPS Area 15 at their first attempt in one of these classes.

Emily Whalley and family emily Whalley (nee curtis) and family will be fielding seven entrants at the Rihs after the home produced team got the 2012 season off to a fantastic start. emily and her own large Riding horse, double chance, got the ball rolling with a win at Four Winds show. ellie hopper soon followed suit with the homebred, Prestlands silhouette, who qualified for the Pretty Polly show hunter Pony class at BsPs area 15. ellie’s little sister, izzy, was not to be out done as she and Ridmore Petit Fleur added two more tickets to the tally in the lead Rein and First Ridden ranks. jill Ridley and hilary curtis own the sweet natured pony and it is hoped (thinking ahead to 2013) that emily’s daughter, Zinnia, will take over the ride. izzy would like to say a big thank you to ellie for bringing on Ridmore Petit Fleur so “wonderfully” this winter.

Alice Spink and Prestwood Dolly Mixture will be competing in the Coloured Championship

Prestwood dolly Mixture, a homebred four-year-old, made her under saddle debut at heathfield, partnered by alice spink, they won and qualified in the coloured section. emily also had the honour of being stand in rider for neighbour (their yards are literally over the road from each other in crawley) charlie sale at NPs area 14, where she rode charlie and julie Farell’s large show hack, honey Glider, to victory and a place at hickstead. charlie was back at the reins at Baston show and qualified for the isRt final.

The Longines Royal International Horse Show Tuesday 17th to Sunday 22nd July 2012

a

s one of the biggest outdoor shows in the country, the longines Royal international horse show uniquely sees the elite of many equestrian disciplines compete side by side: it has everything from the thrills and spills of international showjumping to the elegance and glamour of champion showing horses and ponies, to the exhilarating buzz of the country’s best eventers flying across country. For showing riders, this is exclusively a championship show, and is the culmination of many months of qualifications throughout the winter, with a host of prestigious classes for every breed of British horse and pony. the show also stages the peak of winter national showjumping qualifiers as the home to the British showjumping Winter Finals. as one of only eight global hosts to the Fei Nations cup™ series, the show is also the British public’s only chance to see their national showjumping team compete on home ground. this year’s meeting promises to be a very special year, as the last event before the london 2012 Olympic Games, so don’t miss the last chance to see the teams compete together before heading to london.

CAREERS

Don’t become an

EQUI-N.E.E.T.! It is that time of year when school leavers are deciding whether to go on to further education or whether to go straight into a paid position. Dora Pilkington of Coldblow Equestrian Centre discusses the pros and cons of both options.

I

t’s that time of year again – exams are nearly done and thousands of students are looking at their future prospects. With so few job vacancies it must be sensible to stay in education or training to enhance your prospects. So what are the options within the equestrian industry – which is vast and extends far beyond riding centres and livery yards. If you’re done with GCSE’s then staying at school to do A levels is a very wise idea. These days there is greater flexibility to get out from school for a day release to combine A levels with some training towards some equine qualifications like BHS or NVQ’s. The alternative to A levels is to go to a Further Education College to study for a BTEC Equine Diploma. The colleges that do this best are the Agricultural or Land Based studies ones with a college stable yard but there are sometimes options at other colleges where the practical experience is provided by an livery yard or riding school nearby. The college route is best if, and you must be honest with yourself here: • You are not sure whether you really want a career in the equestrian industry and want to keep your options open to gain

a Level 3 (A level) qualification with UCAS points to maybe go on to a degree level course • You haven’t had a horse or pony of your own or you have had a horse of your own (or on loan) but… • You haven’t been especially active in say Pony Club activities or have competed to a higher (affiliated) level Are you absolutely sure you want to pursue a career path at the heart of the equestrian industry, groom to yard manager or riding instructor to coach? You would then be better off looking at the training opportunities within an equestrian centre where you can concentrate on the BHS or ABRS qualifications which is what employers will look for. Few stable yard employers will employ and pay students straight from college without at least BHS Level 2 Diploma (formerly Stage 2). None of them are going to pay you and give you free training – if it’s offered check out the detail! The other important consideration is location. The cost of fuel and travel is now an important factor especially if both your parents are working to finance you and perhaps siblings through college, university or other training options. They are going to find it expensive and difficult to drop and collect you from an out in the countryside equestrian centre or college. Colleges have student accommodation but at costs in excess of £100 a week this can take some finding even if the tuition fees are free. Some riding centres offer accommodation but it still has to be paid for. So look at the Working Pupil opportunity but do ask lots of questions, such as: • What level of instructor will you be receiving instruction from – it’s no good expecting to pass an exam that the ‘instructor’ hasn’t trained for and passed • Where you will be receiving lectures – is there a proper well set up class room with a library and other teaching aids? • How is the practical work organised and do you have to pay for this – many equestrian centres now charge you for supervised practical training. • Be sure that there is a competent person guiding and supervising the work If you want to be a competition rider are the staff & students encouraged to go out and compete. If you want to be a competition groom do the students get opportunities to travel to higher level, affiliated, competitions? Lots to consider! it will pay to take time and go and look at the college or equestrian centre. A good one will welcome students who want to look round and ask questions. The Ultimate in Coat and Show Preparation

For further information contact Supreme Products on (01377) 229050 or visit www.supremeproducts.co.uk

With the show season in full swing, this issue we look at preparing the coat for top class turnout with help from Supreme Products sponsored Team Hollings and the Stanley Grange Show Team.

W

hen preparing for the competition arena, it is important to present your horse or pony immaculately - it is an art form and every effort should be made to perfect this. Regular grooming, bathing and correct rugging is key to making sure the coat simply sparkles on show day. Penny Hollings explains: “When in the show ring a horse or pony’s coat must be in immaculate condition. A staring coat, one that looks dull, or even thick and woolly will not have you at the top of the line.

Summer grooming

Throughout the summer season it is all too easy to think that with the warmer, milder weather, coats will stay in excellent condition, but without realising coats can easily start to thicken and take on a ‘wintery’ appearance which is the last thing you want when in the show ring at the latter half of the season. Similarly final last minute touch ups such as quarter marks, sharks teeth and the overall gloss cannot be carried out to perfection if the coat is not in the best shape to begin with. Make sure you groom your horse or pony every day. This stimulates oil production and blood circulation, and will remove any dead cells and coat to give your horse a healthy glow. After grooming spray with Supreme Products de luxe Coat Gloss to leave a natural looking shine to your horse’s coat.

Avoid rug rubs

Another important point to bear in mind are rug rubs and bald patches, these are unsightly and really can affect the overall appearance which is what top class turnout is all about. Help is on hand with padded anti-rub bibs and vests, as well as Supreme Products Moisturise & Condition which helps to keep the skin in great condition. When getting horses and ponies ready for competitions it is worth considering bathing one or two days before a show, weather permitting. If your horse or pony is in need of a thorough bath Supreme Products High Shine Shampoo is very effective at stripping out scurf and dust to leave a gleaming conditioned coat. After bathing use Supreme Products de luxe Coat Gloss whilst the coat is still wet and allow to dry naturally. This will leave the coat polished, laid and prepared for the addition of final products before entering the ring or arena. One of the key elements to keeping a coat looking in great condition throughout the year is making sure your horse or pony is warm, yet comfortable with correct rugging. The use of garments enhances the quality of the coat so you can really wow the judges when in the show ring. If you are a regular visitor to the Horse of the Year Show you will have seen many show champions trot down the centre line with their coats gleaming.”

All wrapped up

Fleetwater Xecutive and Georgia Butterworth

Jerome Harforth of the Stanley Grange Show Team added: “A Supreme Products Body Wrap should be your first choice when it comes to choosing your horse’s under rug as the garment is truly fantastic at keeping coats in tip top condition. With a belly flap and leg straps, the Body Wrap does not move and helps to provide the ultimate show finish. As the weather becomes colder in the run up to HOYS, the Body Wrap can be compared to a second skin providing that all important layer to keep your horse or pony warm and maintaining the perfect coat. For early starts it is the ultimate garment in competition preparation. Not only does it keep your horse’s coat sleek and shiny, it also helps to keep them clean and protects plaits created the day before.

ameness is one of the most common conditions horse owners face. According to Lanes Health, the company behind awardwinning joint supplement, LitoVet®, joint disease is probably one of the most common causes of equine lameness, brought about when the body’s ability to heal itself does not keep pace with wear and tear resulting from regular work or injury. Joints are supported by tendons, ligaments and muscles which, when working properly, allow the horse’s joints to work properly too. However, most horses will suffer some form of joint problem during their lives which will manifest as inflammation, stiffness and loss of mobility. By the time you notice the horse is lame the damage has already been done and while there are steps you can take to manage the symptoms of joint disease such as veterinary intervention or feeding a scientifically proven supplement, prevention is better than cure. Overuse, concussion, poor conformation, obesity and age are among the many factors that can contribute to joint disease. During the summer months when many of our horses are working harder whether at competitions, fun rides or hacking, it is worth thinking about what we can do to support the joint health of our horses to prevent lameness occurring in the first place. Firstly, make sure your horse is ‘fit for purpose’. You need to make sure you have built up his muscles sufficiently so they are capable of supporting his joints, and that he is fit enough to do the work you are asking him to do. For example, don’t leave him in a field all week and then expect him to go out and do a ten mile fun ride, jump around a cross country course or do a dressage test. Warming up and warming down properly every time you ride is as important as the training work you’re doing with him. Failing to do so can result in damage to the supporting structures as well as joints themselves.

71-litovet-lrjuly12.indd 2

This year’s weather has presented horse owners across the country with changeable ground conditions from tendon pulling bogs to concussion-causing concrete-like terrain. While it is important for joint health that you work your horse over various terrains it is equally important to be sensitive to the potential to cause injury if you don’t proceed with care so avoid faster work on precarious surfaces. The high rainfall followed by warm sunny weather has caused a surge pasture growth so it is important for horses, particularly those kept at grass, to be managed to avoid obesity which can also place additional strain on the joints. All horses are ultimately susceptible to joint disease so supplementing their diets with a neutraceutical can really benefit your horse’s musculoskeletal health and prevent painful symptoms. LitoVet® can help to support the horse’s natural recovery processes, from an early age and help maintain good mobility throughout his life. LitoVet® is entirely plant based and its efficacy is supported by published research, making it one of the few scientifically proven joint supplements available to horse owners. So this summer, protect your horse’s joints with a carefully managed diet and exercise programme. For further information on LitoVet® visit www.litovet.co.uk or call Lanes Health (01452) 524012.

What’s in your haynet? By Lucy Nicholas of www.trelawneequine.co.uk

A

s a distributor of barefoot hoof boots for horses, I am constantly in contact with customers that are seeking to improve their horses’ foot health. The old saying ‘no foot no horse’ is as true as it ever was, and healthy equine feet start with a healthy equine diet. It’s that simple. Modern hoof care professionals, including farriers that specialise in barefoot horses, will place great emphasis on diet. As with any animal, what you put into the body influences how well it can function, and how healthy the animal is. The hooves (like our human nails) are a very telling indicator of the quality of the diet.

‘What’s in your haynet?’ campaign launches

We are delighted to be working with feed manufacture Dengie Crops Ltd on a brand new initiative. It aims to help educate horse owners about the availability of hay analysis, which is used to assess a horse’s nutritional status. Good quality, low-sugar forage should form the largest part of a horse’s diet, but it is also important to make sure he is receiving all the vitamins and minerals he

needs to thrive, as a deficiency or imbalance will quickly show up in the horse’s hooves. This is the reason many barefoot owners are focussed on getting their horses’ diets right, in order to maximise hoof health and soundness. This is why we advocate hay analysis, and in particular Dengie’s excellent service, as it forms a great starting point for devising a suitable diet for each individual horse.

20% off

Dengie’s forage analysis service normally costs £20 for the basic analysis which includes protein, fibre and oil, or £30 for the comprehensive test which includes minerals. However the company is offering 20% off this price to customers that quote a code that can be found at Trelawne Equine’s facebook page - facebook.com/ TrelawneEquine. Once you have the code, simply email feeds@dengie.com with your personal details, quoting this code. You will then receive a ration evaluation sheet which should be returned with a sample from your regular hay ration. “We look forward to raising awareness about this service to all horse owners – whether they own barefoot or shod horses with the ‘What’s in your haynet?’ campaign. Hay analysis is something of a secret weapon when it comes to devising targeted

Dengie’s equine nutritionist, Katie Williams, says the ‘What’s in your haynet?’ campaign will be useful for owners of both shod and barefoot horses Main image: It is common to see hay analysis results showing high iron levels; Kent in particular was home to many iron works equine diets, and helps owners ensure their feed supplementation is relevant to the animal’s base hay ration, and is being supplied at the correct levels,” explains Dengie’s equine nutritionist, Katie Williams.

Left: Good quality, lowsugar forage should form the largest part of a horse’s diet Right: The hooves are a very telling indicator of the quality of the diet.

Case study Kathy Carter from Kent recently took advantage of this service for her newly barefoot horse Badger. “The iron levels from his hay came back at over twice the ‘toxic threshold’ levels that nutritional experts have outlined for equines, which was a worry. My trimmer explained that it is very common to see hay analysis results showing high iron levels, particularly in our region – we are now working with the excellent farmer who supplies the hay to see if there is anything that he can do to reduce the high iron levels in future batches that are sold to horse owners,” she says. “Excess iron can apparently cause imbalances of the minerals zinc, and in particular copper, because the minerals are competing with each other for absorption. Copper deficiency leaves the hooves at risk of splitting and contracting white line disease and more commonly, thrush infections. “Badger was suffering from intermittent thrush breakouts at the time, but within a few weeks of supplementing with copper, these breakouts stopped. In due course I added more minerals to the diet to try to balance the hay ration. The hay analysis from Dengie is well worth doing, as it means you can choose to supplement your horse’s feeds based on what minerals and vitamins he’s getting from the base diet – there’s no point wasting money on expensive supplements if your horse doesn’t need them, or they’re in too-small quantities.” JULY 2012 Localrider 73
