or this issue I have spent three glorious days reporting at some of the region’s best Agricultural and County Shows. The Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May is always a busy one with Heathfield on Saturday and Surrey County on the Monday. Heathfield is a lovely traditional agricultural show with lots for all the family to see and do. I was delighted to be able to watch Helen Baker and Mossy (September 2017 cover stars) in action for the first time, having previously only seen them in pictures.

Bound for HOYS The third show I visited was the South of England, held over three days at the Ardingly Showground it has over 150 different equestrian classes including showing, driving and show jumping. It was a great week for local competitors many of whom collected their qualifications for HOYS. I was fortunate to be present when Jane Townshend’s Classictop Up & At It took the Cuddy Supreme qualifying for the final at the Horse of the Year Show. We have featured Jane’s horses many times over the years and whilst she qualified a mare, Raritat, two years ago, this is the first homebred she has qualified for the prestigious final, breeders dream of. See our full report on page 32.
Free Tickets As this issue goes to print our attention turns to the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. We have Free entry tickets for the Thursday, Friday and Sunday this year and you can find yours on page 37. Please note a change in the schedule this year, the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup will take place on Sunday and the Longines BHS King George V Gold Cup on Friday. For various reasons we sadly don’t have our normal stand at Hickstead this year, but I will still be at Hickstead taking pictures, so hope to catch up with many of you then. But don’t despair, if you normally love entering our competitions, our friends at Equivation have an amazing one on Stand 21 (between the Derby Bank and the Devil’s Dyke). They have a brilliant competition to win a tack locker full of equiXTREME products, worth over £2,000. See page 36 for more details. With the competition season in full swing now and the summer holidays just around the corner have fun with your horses and remember to keep us informed if you have a great result. FREE TICKETS! I love the RoR Retrained Racehorse classes and am familiar with a lot of our local combinations, and I couldn’t have been more pleased than when Zoe Gould and Musical Legend (this month’s cover stars) took the Championship at Heathfield. Legend truly lives up to his name with impeccable manners and temperament and the ability to turn his hoof to anything, he can regularly be spotted Novice eventing. Turn to page 13 to read more. Another local ex-racehorse Hero Worship owned and ridden by Abi Sole features twice this month. He was foot perfect in the ring at Surrey County to win the RoR Ridden Show Horse class (see page 38 for the full report) and just two weeks later picked up his ticket for the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Final at HOYS (see page 22).

etplan Equine ‘Festival Fever’ heads to Kent for the seventeenth Petplan Equine Area Festival in the series of 24 taking place at Chester Hall Events, Speedgate Farm from Saturday 11th to Monday 13th August. The 2018/19 series kicked off in May at Arena UK, Lincolnshire and offers riders the chance to compete at Preliminary to Intermediate II level. Successful combinations in each class can then qualify for the Petplan Equine Area Festival Finals, of which there are eight. The Championships will then be held at Hartpury College in April 2019. Those heading to the Area Festival at Chester Hall Events will have worked hard to achieve their qualifying scores. To compete at an Area Festival both horse and rider combinations will need to gain three scores at 62% or higher at Preliminary, Novice and Elementary level and two scores at 60% and above at Medium to Intermediate II level. This series is a true celebration of dressage. It offers amateur riders the chance to compete in an atmosphere similar to a top dressage event and will be a thoroughly memorable experience for all involved. Caroline Chester, Event Organiser at Chester Hall Events commented: “We are delighted that Chester Hall Events will be hosting another Area Festival. The competition has a true championship feel and we’ve seen some fantastic horse and rider combinations ride down the centre line. I am very much looking forward to this year’s competition and I want to wish all those heading to Chester Hall Events the very best of luck.”

Chuffy started competing Second Supreme in March 2017 and developed a great bond with the stable favourite, known at home as Ed. From their first Open Novice at Isleham they progressed to Barbury CIC*** before ending the season in eighth place in the Event Riders Masters at Blair and seventeenth place at Blenheim International Horse Trials. Chuffy and Ed had most recently been part of the British Nations Cup Team at Houghton International, where they finished on a clean sheet, adding just 1.2 time penalties to their dressage score. Ed had previously been competed by Pippa Funnell for four seasons, completing Badminton in 2015. He had proved the perfect schoolmaster for Chuffy, confidently introducing her to three star courses and the pair had only one cross-country fault and one show jumping penalty during the last two seasons. Our thoughts are with Chuffy, her family, Pippa and the teams who have loved and cared for Ed during the last sixteen years.

We are very sad to report that Jane and Jonathan Clarke’s wonderful horse, Second Supreme, collapsed and died whilst competing at the Equi-Trek Bramham International Horse Trials at the beginning of June. Ridden by their daughter, Chuffy (Clarke), the combination was competing in the British Horse Feeds CCI*** u25 when Second Supreme stumbled on landing towards the end of the course. The cause of death is believed to be of natural causes.
Blue Chip Feed to Sponsor Sunshine Tour Championships Blue Chip Feed are set to support the 2018 Sunshine Tour Championships at Hickstead. Clare Blaskey founded Blue Chip Feed 22 years ago, she said: “Having heard so much about the Sunshine Tour and what a fantastic time everyone has, I thought it would fit in so well with Blue Chip. We produce a range of Feed Balancers and supplements to ensure horses and ponies stay happy and healthy and to make life easy: everything in one bag.” Held at Hickstead in September the Sunshine Tour Championships are aimed at true amateur competitors. This year there will be special prizes in the Blue Chip Riding Horse Championships and a very generous sponsorship packages on offer to all competitors. CoolDown also conditions the skin and coat, ensuring cleanliness without stripping out essential oils, making it ideal for daily use. As CoolDown is soap free there is no need to rinse it off. RRP £23.03 www.absorbine.co.uk LR Comment: This is brilliant, simply mix a splash with water and sponge down your horse after work. It is cooling and doesn’t need rinsing at all. My horse has sensitive skin, so this is perfect for her.
Lunging for enhanced performance Most horses are lunged during the breaking process, but this is often discontinued once ridden away. People often fail to realize the benefits of lunging as part of the horse’s regular training. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi Ltd says: “Twenty minutes whizzing around on the forehand are counter-productive, but correct lunging with EquiAmi helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. By watching your horse on the lunge you learn lots about his movement and weaker areas and can then apply this to your ridden work. Lunging aims to encourage the horse to stretch over his back, engage his hind quarters while lifting his shoulders, working into a soft, accepting contact. The EquiAmi lunge aid encourages softness and stretching whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. The EquiAmi doesn’t fix or restrain, but encourages engagement of the hindquarters, lightness of the forehand, acceptance and self-carriage.” An independent study showed that, over a six week period, there was a significant increase in stride length and decrease in asymmetry in thoroughbred horses lunged twice a week in the EquiAmi lunge aid. These findings demonstrate that, like a gymnastic workout for athletes, regular lunging can enhance the results of training and improve performance. With endorsements from Paralympic gold medalist Natasha Baker MBE, event rider Harry Meade and top judge Christian Landolt, EquiAmi is being recognized for its benefits in all areas from dressage, eventing and showing through to rehabilitation from injury or surgery and retraining of racehorses.

Eventer Tom Crisp’s yard devastated by fire Tom Crisp returned from a successful trip to Luhmuhlen fourstar horse trials in Germany to find his top yard, tack room and feed room, plus other buildings burned to the ground. If you haven’t seen the devastating images visit the ‘Tom Crisp Eventing’ Facebook page. Luckily all the horses were out in the field when the fire happened, but Tom lost everything other than the tack and equipment he had on the lorry. Friends and strangers have been finding him equipment to keep his busy competition yard functioning, but the likelihood is he needs more. If you can spare any rugs, bits, boots or other pieces of tack or equipment, let Tom know via his Facebook page.

work with horses which are treated like royalty? Then look no further than horseracing. Horseracing has long been associated with Kings and Queens – it even gets referred to as the Sport of Kings on occasions – but at ‘Careers in Racing’ they think it’s most relevant to the horses these days, particularly when you see the level of care and attention given to them by their grooms. The training available to grooms in the racing industry is second to none with three dedicated training providers. Namely the Northern Racing College and The British Racing School if you want to work in a racing yard, and the National Stud if you want to work in a Thoroughbred stud. All of the colleges offer non-riding training courses, so if you prefer to keep your feet on the ground there are still plenty of options. The training available in horseracing is not just aimed at school leavers; there are options for those leaving equine colleges, those already working with horses, and those transitioning from completely different careers. Racing yards have incredible facilities to train their horses, from solariums, vibroplates, salt rooms, and water treadmills to swimming pools, as well as personal massage therapists for the horses and the list goes on. If you want to follow a career with horses where you can get involved in using all of these things as part of your day to day role, then take a look at careerinsracing.com for information on becoming a racing groom. The British Horseracing Industry has produced a brilliant video about life on a racing yard, with behind the scenes shots to see how racing ensures that the ‘Horse Comes First’. To watch the video, just follow the link https://www.careersinracing.com/whats-happening/ video-wall/ For more information on any of the above and working in racing visit at www.careersinracing.com

British W Showjumping Membership gives you the opportunity to qualify to jump ay the British Showjumping National Championships at Stoneleigh as well as other prestigious finals.
hether you’re a seasoned showjumper or an enthusiastic beginner, there’s no better time to take a look at what British Showjumping has to offer. Classes start at just 70cm with many championships to aim for, taking place at some of the best venues in the country. British Showjumping membership also offers much more than just competing, with a comprehensive training environment that spans regional Academies, a 5* Training programme as well as an extensive list of UKCC Accredited Coaches who can assist you to reach your goals. Over and above this there are the added benefits of knowing that you are competing at well run and insured shows across well designed courses that have your progression in mind. In addition, you have the assurance of a £30m public liability cover as part of the membership. Three of the core membership types that may suit you are below but it is always worth giving the Membership Team a call on 02476 698824 who will be able to assist and give guidance as to the membership type which will be right for you.
‘Just for Schools’ Membership
If you are at school the ‘Just for Schools’ membership is an incredible opportunity for students to share their passion with their school and create lasting friendships with fellow riders. If there isn’t enough of you to make up a team you can compete as an Individual, so there really isn’t anything stopping you take part. So how does it work? Well, Schools and Colleges can submit both teams (three to four riders) and individuals to compete against each other in the battle for league points with the aim of qualifying for the Winter Championship Final, which takes place in April at the David Broome Centre and then the Summer Championships Finals at the British Showjumping National Championships in August. Competitions are held across the country with class heights ranging from 70cm – 1.10m, which sees all ages and abilities coming forward to represent their school and do their team proud. It is just £30 for the year per team for three or four members, these members can be interchanged throughout the year as well as compete as an individual.
Club Membership & Club Shows
There are rosettes, a sash and rug for the Club League winners
Showjumping’s Club membership gives both junior and senior competitors jumping between 70cm – 1.00m the chance to compete for minimal cost. It also provides plenty of perks and benefits too with Finals at each of the height categories taking place at the British Showjumping National Championships in August. Competing for regional league points rather than prize money you have the opportunity to focus on heading your regional league whilst also qualifying for Club League Finals which take place at Stoneleigh Park and are incorporated into the British Showjumping National Championships. With the horse/rider combination being the key factor it is also worth knowing that there is no age limit on riders competing ponies within Club shows. Membership for both yourself and your horse or pony is just £30 for the year and gives you all the benefits of membership including Public Liability cover.
National Membership Pony Club & Riding Club offer
For riders who wish to compete for prize money and the chance to qualify for National Championships which take place across a multitude of venues from Aintree which hosts the Amateur and Veteran Championships through to Horse of the Year Show, Hickstead and of course the National Championships at Stoneleigh Park to name but a few. Classes start at 85cm with a whole host of championships to aim for ensuring there will be at least half a dozen national series that you can aim to qualify for. There is a very clear league structure for new members to follow which illustrates all the classes they can aim for within the specific height category they are comfortable competing in. If you are looking to join as a new member or haven’t been a member for more than three years there may be a membership discounted offer available to you. As a Pony Club member you can start competing from just £55 for the year and as a senior Riding Club member from just £107. British Showjumping also works in conjunction with Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), to run a Championship class for Retrained Racehorses competing at Club level. As long as your ex racehorse has started in at least one race in Great Britain and is also registered with the RoR, you would be eligible for accruing league points which will set you en-route to the Final. For further information on which Membership type might be right for you, why not ring the British Showjumping Membership Team on 02476 698824 who will be happy to talk it through with you or visit www.britishshowjumping.co.uk 16 Localrider july/august 2018

The Gel Eze range of saddle pads offer excellent shock absorption benefits
The benefits of Saddle Pads Words by Stephen Biddlecombe
t
oday’s saddles are more well-fitting than they have ever been, while horse owners are much more educated about the benefits of a correctly fitting saddle. However, not every horse is the perfect shape, and saddle pads and numnahs allow us to enhance a saddle’s benefits. there is a misconception that using a saddle pad is just ‘covering up’ a badly fitting saddle; however, a quality pad can actually enhance a saddle’s fit. experts agree with this concept.
•
Another study investigated saddle pad pressure distribution, finding that maximum overall force was reduced in up to 61.1% of subjects, when gel saddle pads were used.
References for the studies mentioned are available on our blog at: www.worldwidetack.com/ studies-saddle-pads-locomotion
i am a big fan of both sheepskin and gel-based saddle pads - and i personally introduced gel eze, the original non-slip gel pads, to the uK. the gel in our saddle pad products that have gel incorporated is made from a high-grade polymer with secret ingredients for the gel eze ‘Dna’. We find that the pads offer excellent shock absorption benefits – they also help prevent the saddle from moving. We have combined gel eze products with our range of stephens saddle pads, including discipline-specific saddle pads with gel eze Comfort Cushions, to protect different areas, such as the shoulder area and the point of the saddle tree. To find out more visit www.worldwidetack.com
A landmark study
For example, a landmark study published in the equine Veterinary journal stated that while saddle pads are widely used in riding sports, their influence on saddle pressures is poorly understood. the team studied sixteen sound horses of different breeds and ages they were ridden on a treadmill at walk and sitting trot. the horses were wearing a dressage saddle with a well-fitting saddle tree, and four different saddle pads (gel, leather, foam and fur) were used successively. For comparison, measurements were also made without any saddle pad. Forelimb motion and stride cycles were analysed with a pressure mat, and measurements including maximum overall force (MoF) were taken. a significant decrease in MoF correlated with improved saddle fit; a significant increase correlated with worsened saddle fit. interestingly, the fur pad significantly decreased the MoF at walk and trot, compared to ‘without pad’ measurements. none of the saddle pads trialled and studied increased the MoF significantly, when compared to the data without a saddle pad - e.g. none of the pads made the saddle fit worse, in this study. (Notes - the test used reindeer fur, however this fur isn’t widely used in saddle pads, due to its lack of durability - sheepskin is more widely used, and is similarly dense. The researchers in this study concluded that they found ‘a well chosen saddle pad can reduce the load on the horse’s back, and therefore improve the suitability of a fitting saddle.’)
What other studies relate to saddles and pads? •
•
One pressure mat study found that while the jumping position gave the lowest load on the horse’s back, sitting trot gave most levels of pressure. A further study found that the front part of the saddle rotated in the opposite direction to the rider’s pelvis; therefore, horses may experience high pressure, even in walk. july/august 2018 Localrider 25

Heading to Hickstead Gemma Scotford Smith was delighted when she and her horse, Chance, finished sixth in the Eventers Challenge at Priory Court Farm, Polegate, East Sussex, qualifying for the Sunshine Tour Championships at Hickstead in September. Gemma said: “Chance is a 10-years-old Irish Sports Horse, who I have had the pleasure of owning for two years. We compete in show jumping and cross country and I hope to start tackling the dressage soon, so that we can achieve our goal of completing our first one-dayevent by the end of this season. Chance was an extremely nervous horse when I first got him and I believe he was very misunderstood. He had previously been passed from pillar to post, so I spent a long time gaining his trust and building a bond and now we both thoroughly enjoy going out competing!” 28 Localrider july/august 2018

Kent’s Elizabeth Baker scooped the Equithème Leading Pony Showjumper of the Year Qualifier at The College Equestrian Centre, Keysoe on Saturday 9th June with the only clear round of the class. Each of the 34 starters were keen to pick up one of the three qualification tickets on offer for the Championship Final held at Horse of the Year Show in October. The technical course saw poles fall and only one clear produced in the first round. Traveling from Eastry, Kent, 16-year-old Elizabeth put in the winning performance on board Adams Fancy, a 13-year-old chestnut gelding owned by Piers Hammond. They kept a cool head to produce that only clear of the competition.

Overground Endoscopy Wind problems in horses have always been a common problem, with inspiratory and expiratory noises coupled with poor performance leading to veterinary investigations. Here Dr Chris Baldwin BVetMed(Hons) MRCVS of the Sussex Equine Hospital outlines one of the most important forward steps that has recently occurred in the management of upper respiratory problems in the horse.
T
he upper respiratory tract of the horse consists of three basic components, the larynx, pharynx and trachea. Horses rarely have problems with their trachea but conditions affecting both the larynx and pharynx are common and can impact on a horse’s ability to perform and ultimately the horse’s ability to breathe. A picture of a horse’s larynx labelled

Trachea
through a snorkel, that as you get more tired starts to get smaller until you can run only breathing through a small straw. This is known as a dynamic collapse of the larynx. If this left arytenoid pictured in figure 1 stays as it is when the horse is working hard and breathing hard then it is unlikely to affect the horse’s airway or performance, however if as the horse exercises and starts to breathe harder the left arytenoid collapses in, then it will block half the airway and this then is a problem. Additionally, we can see no abnormalities of any other structures of this larynx, but these structures which appear normal at rest can significantly affect performance when the horse is working and breathing hard. The vocal cords and aryepiglottic folds have the capacity to collapse inwards contributing to a narrowing of the horse’s airway. But resting endoscopes don’t give us the ability to see if this is happening and if it is which structures are affected.
New technology
The newest development in the diagnosis of upper respiratory problems is overground endoscopy, this is the placement of a scope up the horse’s nose to watch the larynx whilst the horse is exercising. This technology started with the placement of a normal scope up the horse’s nose and running the horse on a treadmill, but this was expensive and required specialist facilities to train the horse’s on a treadmill and didn’t always represent true racing/ competing/exercising conditions. There is now an overground endoscopy system that places a camera up the horse’s nose and communicates all the information wirelessly to a hand-held computer and downloads a copy of the video onto a saddle pack so the horse can be ridden and scoped anywhere; race track, gallops, cross country, even schooling over jumps. With this technology we can observe exactly what is happening second by second when a horse is working, allowing us to detect any subtle movements and changes in a horse’s upper respiratory tract so we can give the most accurate diagnosis possible, this is allowing us now to enter into a new era of targeted upper respiratory surgery that is giving better results for both rider and horse.
Aryepiglottic fold
The practice has the back up of the RCVS Accredited Hospital.
Ventricles (can’t see) Vocal cords (sharp white lines of tissue) Epiglottis
We have moved to Ashington Until only very recently an assessment of the horse’s upper respiratory tract involved placing a scope (camera) up the horse’s nose and visually looking at the larynx and pharynx when the horse was either resting or immediately after working hard. This technique is very good at detecting structural abnormalities but is very poor at detecting functional abnormalities.
Brand-new facilities. Brand-new name. The Arundel Equine Hospital has now changed to Sussex Equine Hospital. Sussex Equine Hospital (RCVS Accredited) is still one of the oldest dedicated equine practices in the UK. A team of 18 experienced equine vets provide both routine and emergency care 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year throughout Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire.
Perpetuating cycle
In the above picture we can see the left arytenoid (starred) is not as abducted (pulled back) as the right and so we know this horse has recurrent laryngeal neuropathy. What we don’t know is how well the larynx is functioning when the horse is working. As a horse increases the speed of travel and tires the horse’s respiratory rate and effort increase to supply more oxygen to the body. With an increased respiratory rate and effort the horse sucks air into the lungs creating a negative pressure in the larynx and pharynx. This negative pressure can be so great that unstable or weak parts of the larynx are sucked and drawn across the airway, this causes an obstruction of the airway and the vibration and movement of the tissue causes a noise. This is then a perpetuating cycle as the more the horse tires the greater the negative pressure of inspiration and the more the unstable larynx is drawn across the airway so the more the airway is obstructed. Imagine running around a track breathing

Equithème Rafraichissante Cooling Sheet
How to Keep Your Horses Cool this Summer
Laura washing off one of her horses
We Brits love the sunny weather, (because we don’t see a lot of it) and like to make the most of the warmer days when they appear. Whilst enjoying the sun it is also important to keep your horse or pony cool and hydrated in the heat. Here Equithème’s sponsored rider Laura Robinson provides some top tips to keep your equine friends cool this summer.
1 Water
This is so important to keep your horses hydrated, so make sure in the field they have plenty of clean, fresh water. If your horses are in one field together make sure you put a number of water sources in different areas so all of them can get to water and not be bullied away.
2 Shelter
Shade allows your horses and ponies to get away from direct sunlight and stay a little cooler. If there isn’t any shelter in your field it may be best to consider not turning your horses out during the hottest part of the day, or even turning them out overnight.
3 Cooling Down
Again, like turnout, choose when to ride i.e. not when temperatures are soaring mid-afternoon. After schooling or competing, cooling them off with plenty of water, a hosepipe and sponges is a great way for horses to recover and relax. Just think how you would feel if you couldn’t shower after a run or hitting the gym!
4 Flies
This isn’t so much to do with cooling, but when horses sweat it attracts flies which can really irritate some horses, so it is really important when you wash your horses off it is done properly. Using fly sheets and repellent also help in deterring the bugs.
5 Sun Cream
Yes, this delightful product isn’t just for humans and can be used on non-pigmented areas, especially grey’s. Play close attention to their muzzles and the tips of their ears.
6 Electrolytes
Especially for horses that have sweated quite a lot they lose essential salts which need to be replaced, so an electrolyte supplement will help encourage them to drink.
7 Products
There has been a great advancement in developing new products including ones to keep your horses cool. Equithème for example have designed the Rafraichissante Cooling Sheet that has areas with a cooling band, so owners can submerge the rug in water, ring it out and the cooling bands stay cool whilst the horse is wearing the sheet.
8 Heatstroke
Look out for the signs: increased pulse, quicker breathing rate, dehydration and a raised temperature. If you see these signs move your horse somewhere cool and seek immediate advice from your vet.

Don’t forget to hydrate and wear sun cream whilst on the yard, you can easily catch sun stroke yourself, a hat is also helpful. For further information visit: www.equitheme.co.uk

FEATURE Preventing Dehydration •
Check troughs regularly to ensure they are full and clean.
•
If using automatic waterers, check they are re-filling as they should.
•
Hang salt licks in the field and stable.
•
Feed electrolytes after hard work, when travelling and during periods of hot weather.
•
Ensure water is available at all times.
Lorry List To ensure your horse doesn’t end up dehydrated at this year’s shows, make sure you pack your lorry with everything you’ll need. •
A full water container – size around 20L per horse.
•
Electrolytes, ready to mix.
•
Two water buckets, one for the electrolyte drink and one for plain water.
•
A third bucket for your horse’s refreshing cooling wash – and don’t forget the sponge.
•
A feed bucket and small palatable feed, in case you find that your horse prefers their electrolytes in their feed.
•
An isotonic sports drink for yourself.
Keeping a horse hydrated Water is quite simply, the most important aspect of your and your horse’s diet. Essential to life, water makes up around 65 - 75% of the horse’s bodyweight. Over summer we have the increased requirements for water associated both with warmer weather and workload. Strenuous work can increase the water requirement by up to a massive three hundred percent. While temperature also has an effect, with trials showing that in hot weather (over 33oC) water requirements in resting horses is four to five times higher than normal. This is obviously hugely dependent on the type and level of activity, as well as the ambient temperature.
Electrolytes Of course, when a horse sweats he doesn’t only lose water. Electrolytes are lost in sweat which are essential for maintaining the acid-base balance within the body. The acid-base balance regulates many cell pathways and any disruption can lead to a build-up of lactate in the muscles, which leads to reduced enzyme actions and acidosis. This can show itself in the horse as azoturia, ranging in severity from slight stiffness following work to acute muscle spasms. Over time repeated dehydration results in de-mineralistion, depriving muscle, bone and cartilage of the essential nutrients for post exercise recovery. The most important electrolytes, or body salts, are sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium. However, losses increase with work and temperature. It is calculated that an average horse can lose up to 90g of body salts in just two hours’ work. Therefore, it is essential to use an electrolyte supplement which
Summer Care & Hydration We all know how important it is for our horses to have access to water, but with the increase in temperature during summer it is also important to ensure that any lost electrolytes are restored. Here Kate Hore RNutr(Animal) Snr Nutritionist at NAF explains what you should be doing to ensure both you and your horse are on winning form this summer.
Body salts are not the only nutrients lost in sweat, trace levels of some of the essential minerals are present, including iron, copper and zinc, all important minerals for working horses. For your horse to work to his peak performance it’s important that you ensure these are also replaced. The best way of ensuring a balanced approach to mineral supplementation is to use a broad spectrum supplement, such as a concentrated balancer or liquid vitamin and mineral, which can easily be added to their daily feed.
If dehydration is allowed to continue you will also see a more concentrated, darker coloured urine. To test hydration status in your horse, try the pinch test. Simply take a pinch of skin along the neck and let it go again. It should immediately flatten again back to normal. If it’s slow to go down, then that is a sign that you need to act to rehydrate your horse. If your horse has become a little dehydrated then don’t worry, it should be easily resolved without need to involve your vet, you simply need to make sure you get the water back into your horse quickly and efficiently. However, if you’re particularly concerned about your horse’s signs then, of course, you should include your vet as a first stop. Ensure the water provided is always clean and fresh. Ideally mains water should be used, but if your horse has access to natural water courses ensure there is no risk of pollution further upstream, and stagnant ponds should be avoided at all costs. If travelling and competing your horse regularly make sure you take water from home as a familiar taste will also encourage horses to drink.
Signs of dehydration
Conclusion
provides a broad spectrum of all electrolytes for working horses. Even if your horse is not an obvious “sweater” do not dismiss electrolytes. Significant amounts of sweat are lost by evaporation from the lungs as a means controlling temperature and, again, the amounts increase massively with increased work and temperature. Many electrolyte mixes can be given both dissolved in water or in the feed, the majority of horses will eat them comfortably.
Mineral sweat losses
Early signs of dehydration are poor concentration and poor performance. So, if you’ve jumped a few rounds at a show and are doing well, but at the last round you come out with a ‘cricket score’ is that because you and your horse aren’t yet ready for that level, or is it dehydration from the travel and competing? Other signs include lethargy and depression, so if your horse seems quieter than normal, particularly following hard work or during warm weather, make sure you consider their hydration status.
In conclusion we can see that a constant supply of clean fresh water is necessary for all horses regardless of workload or temperature. When additional strains are added, such as regular travel and competition, it becomes important to consider the overall effect of sweating on the horse. Finally, don’t forget your own electrolytes, consider a sports drink designed for exercising athletes rather than your favourite soft drink if you want to keep up with your horse.

FEEDING
Some horses see their workload increase significantly during summer with more shows, events and opportunities to get out and about in the good weather. If your horse is doing more work, it is worth considering whether he needs any changes to his diet. Most feed companies have great nutritional helplines and it is worth checking if you are in any doubt.
Dodson & Horrell launch Balancer Range The Balancer Range from dodson & Horrell is made up of six brand new feed products. It has been developed after in-depth research by dodson & Horrell’s leading nutritionists, as the company continues to bring ground-breaking products into the equine feed market. Balancers are concentrated pellets providing essential nutrients and high-quality protein that meet the horse’s requirements in a low-calorie format. Feeding a consistent amount of balancer allows you to increase or decrease the calories and fibre in keeping with your horse’s condition and workload; without having to alter their feed completely. The dodson & Horrell Balancer Range offer customers six different varieties to cater for every horse’s need. Each balancer contains a distinctive combination of optimal vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as well as supplements for hoof health, coat condition, digestive function, and mobility, depending on the balancer chosen. Available in 15kg bags the Balancer Range includes: • Be Calm – For horses prone to excitability, it’s cereal-grain free with increased levels of magnesium. Be Calm also contains actisaf yeast, antioxidants (QLC), hoof support and calming herbs such as chamomile, lemon balm and vervain. • Easy Everyday – Contains optimum levels of vitamins and minerals for horses and ponies in light work or rest, including pasture mix herbs for increased palatability. • Go Lite – A low calorie, low protein balancer containing antioxidants (QLC) and hoof support including Lami-herbs, nettle and seaweed to help support those at risk of laminitis. • Performance – With higher levels of vitamins and minerals to help support horses who are working hard it also contains hindgut support, antioxidants (QLC), joint support, hoof support and mint and basil for palatability. • Senior Support – Containing increased levels of the vitamins and minerals required by veterans, antioxidants (QLC), hindgut support, hoof support and joint support; which includes MSM, glucosamine and turmeric. • Ulcer Sensitive – A cereal-grain free balancer, with a complete digestive support package for horses who are prone to ulcers or have sensitive digestive systems. Includes ulcer herbs including linseed, liquorice, comfrey and pumpkin seeds. The balancers will be on sale in store from 9th july 2018. www.dodsonandhorrell.com
mollichaff herbal Mollichaff Herbal is dustextracted, chopped and lightly mixed with a low sugar blend of molasses, using a special process that coats every part of the chaff evenly to make it very palatable. This also gives it an open texture, unlike heavily molassed chaffs which can be sticky and lumpy. By stimulating the production of saliva and slowing down the passage of food throughout the gut, Mollichaff Herbal can help to promote good digestion. In particular, it will satisfy a stabled horse’s psychological need to chew, requiring up to 8,000 chews per kilo to eat compared to as few as 1,200 for concentrates. www.horsehage.co.uk
Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is a highly nutritious and extremely versatile, quick soaking beet pulp feed that is suitable for overweight ponies and those prone to laminitis. Starch free and unmolassed, Speedi-Beet is 95% sugar free and can be fed in small amounts to overweight horses and ponies as a carrier for a multivitamin and mineral supplement. There’s a high proportion of soluble fibre, mostly pectins in Speedi-Beet, which means its fibre is more easily digested than that found in forage e.g. hay. This makes it a great source of non-heating slow release energy. It can be ready in just 10 minutes. www.britishhorsefeeds.com
TopSpec Linseed mash Rich in linseed and oatbran TopSpec Linseed Mash contains just 12% starch yet the scattering of flaked maize and flaked peas lends a mix-like appearance to this scrumptious, flavoursome mash. Feeding this highly-palatable mash with an appropriate TopSpec feed balancer or supplement will result in horses shining with health. Mashes are very useful for hydrating horses and volumising their feeds. The formula is very high in oil and contains good fibre levels, which makes it more sympathetic to the equine digestive system than high-starch feeds. The new Linseed Mash can be used in those circumstances where extra condition is required. www.topspec.com

Electrolytes play an important role in muscle function and through their role in hydration both temperature regulation, and the transport of nutrients and waste products throughout the horse’s body. A horse has only to become mildly dehydrated in order to lose performance, sometimes reported as a lack of stamina and slow recovery rates. TopSpec Electrolytes can be fed to horses to help compensate for electrolyte loss during sweating, www.topspec.com
Equine America So Kalm Solution So Kalm Solution contains a premium grade Magnesium with L-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid associated with the production of serotonin, to calm and focus the horse. Fed daily, this can aid concentration and willingness to work, without removing the edge required for competition. It will help with young horses who have a tendency to be highly strung and distracted. So-Kalm Paste can be used alone or as a top up for So-Kalm Solution. It is ideal to use before transporting young horses or in times of stress
ElectroSalts are specifically designed to replace important body salts lost through sweating and restore the natural electrolyte balance. Sweating not only loses fluid as it evaporates, but also essential body salts, particularly sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Failure to replace these body salts (known as electrolytes) can result in fatigue, and in extreme cases, damage to muscle, bone and cartilage tissue. ElectroSalts are a concentrated combination of the essential salts in combination with dextrose to aid efficient absorption of the salts and maintain optimal health. ElectroSalts come in an easy to feed powder, simply dissolve in water or add to their feed. Ideal for horses and ponies in medium to heavy work following periods of exertion or periods of hot weather. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
NAF EnerG EnerG has been specifically formulated to support the additional nutritional need of the performance horse or pony to support energy utilisation. A targeted formula to support oxygen transport to hard working muscles while copper and zinc are essential for health, performance and optimising energy metabolism of the modern day sport horse or pony. A wide spectrum of Vitamin B complexes support the health and efficiency of red blood cells, energy metabolism and aemoglobin. EnerG is an ideal and effective tonic for horses and ponies with poor blood profiles. Importantly, EnerG is a carefully targeted product that can safely be added to the existing diet providing the key nutrients necessary to support the hardworking equine athlete. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
other feed news Silvermoor Swingers
Equine America Apple Lytes are a saltbased product which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple Lytes are also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. Electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse, always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise.
Silvermoor Swingers are the only hanging forage block available on the market. Made from pure dried grass and a natural binder with no added sugar, the innovative design attaches to the rope (which can be bought separately) and is hung from a height in your stable. There are no corners on the block, so horses cannot get a firm grip on it, ensuring they are eaten slowly and over time. Made from 100% natural ingredients Silvermoor Swingers are low in sugar and low in starch. They provide a healthy addition to the horse’s diet and can be used as part of a weight management diet. They are safe to use for laminitics and good doers, as well as insulin resistant horses and those suffering from EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome).

Top Tips
for Keeping your Paddocks in Good Condition Want to transform your damaged fields into immaculate paddocks? Here grassland expert Jonathan Cox from Suregrow Fertiliser shares his top ten tips.
1
Poached land can be rescued, but timing is very important. If the ground is too wet using a tractor will make a real mess. If the ground has dried out too much then the hoof prints and ruts may not roll back flat, leaving you with an uneven rough field which can be unsafe.
2 3
Start renovation work in spring when the land should be drying out and the temperature warming up.

REVIVE E L E C T R O LY T E S
Harrow the field. This will tear out moss, break up and level heavy soil, to improve the soil structure and make a seedbed. Harrow as a matter of routine throughout the year.
4
Fertilising is a vital component to achieving a well-balanced paddock. It stimulates root development, resulting in a denser sward and therefore suppressing weed growth. After in depth research and development Suregrow Fertiliser has been designed to be slow release and low in nitrogen avoiding lush high protein grass which can be harmful.
5
Ensure your paddocks are not mineral deficient by using CSM. A granular blend of calcified seaweed, CSM is created from sustainable sources, sun dried sea salt and a natural source of Magnesium. This helps makes sure your grass is of the best quality and gives it an extra boost.
6
Choose your grass seed carefully a good paddock mixture should be hard wearing, quick to establish and contain the right blend for your paddock. Suregrow’s grass seed range consists of Paddock Grass Seed Mix, Fast Grass, Meadow and Laminitics Grass Mix.
7
Oversow poached or damaged areas as weeds may invade these parts. Grass seed can be spread by hand, drill or fertiliser spreader.
8
If the preparation is right, then the maintenance and upkeep is relatively easy. Topping stops the grazing sward from getting leggy and encourages horses to graze an entire field, not just parts of it.
9
Pull out weeds when you see them and don’t leave them to spread their seeds. Regularly remove horse droppings from your pasture.
10
Put in an extra gate. This will help prevent poaching and allow one gateway time to recover.
Specialising in the care of grassland for horses and ponies, Suregrow has a range of products including fertilisers, mineral and trace elements and grass seeds specifically selected for horse and pony paddocks, as well as the ultimate in arena and ground care management. Suregrow products include Suregrow Fertiliser, CSM, Paddock Grass Seed Mix, Fast Grass, Meadow and Laminitics Grass Mix. www.suregrowuk.com
