aving moved from its home at Great Bookham Equestrian in Surrey to The All England Jumping Showground at Hickstead last year, the Sunshine Tour is now established as one of the significant championships to aim for in the unaffiliated calendar. Whilst riders from the South East still accounted for a large proportion of the entries it was good to see and interview riders from all over the country, with a strong contingent coming from the Midlands as well as Devon and Dorset. The Championships included Show Jumping, Dressage and Eventers Challenge classes, as well as Showing, for which there were seven individual Supreme Championships and a Super Supreme Championship at the end of the day. It was a fairytale ending to a strong day of competition when three-year-old Ella Freeman from Wolverhampton was pulled forward on her wonderful pony Bella to stand Super ‘Saturday’ Supreme Champion. Having been pulled in tenth in the Lead Rein (6 & under class) earlier in the day, Ella and her mother took on board the helpful advice provided by the judge on what they could improve for next time. Their hard work paid dividends when they were pulled in second in the Mountain & Moorland Lead Rein (10 & under), qualifying for the Mini Supreme. Ridden classes, judge Emma Holder pulled Ella and Bella forward. Emma commented later that Ella, Laura and Bella had improved greatly throughout the day, absorbing everything they had learned each time they were in the ring.
Super ‘Saturday’ Supreme With little time to celebrate they remained in the ring for the Super ‘Saturday’ Supreme Championship. Judge Gayle Holder (Emma’s mother) had not seen most of the combinations, so asked them each to perform a short show. In bringing Bella forward as her Super ‘Saturday’ Supreme Champion of the Show, Gayle said: “Bella is the perfect Lead Rein pony. She has quality, is well balanced and the overall picture with the little girl was amazing.” Gayle continued: “The three-year-old rider (Ella) didn’t miss a beat and had a smile that says it all. Bella is a superstar pony, who never pulled and the perfect Lead Rein pony.” At the end of what must have been two very long days for threeyear-old Ella, she was a pure delight to interview. She had been up at 7am on Friday to help bath Bella, before travelling down from Wolverhapton to Hickstead with her family and friends. Ella, Bella and Laura had a support team of nine, which included, Mr Freeman, Ella’s grandparents and six friends from the yard. They must have

known something special was going to happen. Ella has been riding five-year-old Bella for the last year and is looking forward to doing more show jumping as well as being able to ride on her own. She is clearly an ambitious and determined young lady and I was not surprised to hear she wants to be like Charlotte Dujardin when she grows up and continued to tell me how she had watched her at the Olympics during the summer.
Versatile hunter stands Reserve 11-year-old Beatrice Allaway and the stunning, coloured 19-yearold, The Raindancer took the Reserve spot in the Super ‘Saturday’ Supreme Championship. Standing second in the Working Hunter Pony class and Working Hunter Championship to Ffleur Harris and Classic Consort, the combination caught Gayle Holder’s eye in the Super Supreme. Talking later, Gayle said: “The Raindancer is the ultimate working hunter pony, with tremendous bone and substance. If I had fancied a day’s hunting, that is the one I would have chosen.” A fairly new partnership, Beatrice and The Raindancer (Danny) are members of the Romney Marsh Pony Club and particularly enjoy hunting and eventing. Beatrice hopes to compete in BE events next year. The pair were amongst a few successful combinations who were returning for a second day of competition on Sunday. A day which for Beatrice and Danny was even more successful than the previous, when they won the Ridden Coloured Pony, stood Ridden Show Pony Champions, before once again standing Reserve in the Super Supreme Championship.

Ffleur Harris made her trip across The Solent from the Isle of Wight a successful one with her two ponies Classic Consort, who won a mixture of classes on both days and Trefursdon Stormsdown, who won the Small Mountain & Moorland Ridden class. Having qualified both for the Ridden Show Pony Supreme Championship on Sunday, Ffleur chose to ride Classic Consort who earlier in the day had won the Show Pony & Show Hunter Pony class. The pair went on to stand Reserve Supreme to Beatrice Allaway and The Raindancer. Both strong combinations throughout the Sunshine Tour Beatrice and The Raindancer had stood second and Reserve Supreme to Ffleur and Classic Consort on Saturday in the Working Hunter Pony class and subsequent Championship. Classic Consort who only started jumping two years ago continued his success in the Working Hunter classes on Sunday
