Welcome 28 10 T

he best thing about editing Localrider is seeing all the amazing results achieved by local riders and this issue is bursting at the seams with stories of riders excelling at a variety of different disciplines. It was wonderful to see so may riders from the South East in the ribbons at the Horse of the Year Show, many of whom are home produced and amateur riders. I had a front row seat to clap and cheer when Maisie Chester won the Mountain & Moorland First Ridden final on Zara Johnstone’s Dartmoor, Pumphill Fandango. It was only the second time Maisie had ridden Pumphill Fandango in the ring after Zara suggested she try and qualify at the NPS Champs. You can read their story and all the other news from the Horse of the Year Show on page 12.

Inspiring amateur rider I also felt extremely proud watching the local combinations competing at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials held at the beginning of September. Having interviewed vet and four-star event rider Katie Preston just a few weeks before, I had everything crossed they would have a great competition and we would get our cover shot! Katie fits in long hours as an equine veterinary surgeon in addition to riding and competing three wonderful horses. You can read her inspiring story on page 10.

September is a busy month for shows and events and I had a wonderful weekend at Hickstead, running from ring to ring (there are lots) trying to catch as much of the Sunshine Tour action as I could. It was lovely to catch up with regular readers as well as meet some new riders too. Turn to page 40 to find out more. There is no escaping the nights are drawing in and the temperature is falling and soon it will be time to dig out all those extra layers. With that in mind we have been testing a fabulous range of clothes to keep you feeling toasty warm from head to toe this autumn. You can find out just what we thought on page 22. Remember to stay in touch and let us know if you have had a good result. Have fun!

Holiday Livery now available at High Weald Horse Hydro

H

igh Weald Horse Hydro, one of the South’s leading equine hydrotherapy centres, have recently extended their livery offer to include holiday stays at their yard in the heart of East Sussex. The yard is set in 100 acres of beautiful High Weald farmland with post-and-rail-fenced paddocks, owners on site and CCTV throughout the premises. Customers can tailor a livery package to suit their needs, with options ranging from simple stabling, feed and turnout, to full equine Spa breaks including treatments in the state-of-the-art hydrotherapy centre. To find out more, contact Evonne on 01435 518568 or visit their website: www.highwealdhorsehydro.co.uk

Pick, carry, empty… The Quick Pick offers roughly twice the capacity of a standard scoop and the flip feature allows the first heap of manure to drop to the back of the bucket so the next pile can be easily collected with plenty of room. Not only does this ensure nothing rolls back out after collecting, it also means the Quick Pick needs emptying less often. The store element enables the Quick Pick to be conveniently hung if needed - which is particularly helpful when you are travelling. Another clever feature is the integral boot scraper. As poo-picking needs to be done whatever the weather, you can keep your boots clean by simply standing on the left footplate whilst scraping their right foot and vice versa. What’s more, the Quick Pick is a practical tool for both able and less able horse owners, as it can be used from five different positions - enabling it to suit anyone’s style or strength. Featuring a handy attachment, the Quick Pick is built to use alongside the Quick Pick Rake that combines a long and chunky handle with especially angled prongs, enabling droppings to be effortlessly flicked out of a number of surfaces including long grass, shavings and sand. www.quickpickequine.co.uk

Charlotte’s main focus is to enhance the horse’s performance and educate clients on how the musculoskeletal system works. For more information call 07779 568462.

The perfect cold feet solution There is nothing worse than jumping off your horse with frozen toes. Equitector offers the ideal solution with their unique Climate Control technology. This heat reflective foil system is based on space blanket technology and works somewhat like a vacuum flask. The boots prevent cold feet even if it is minus 25 degrees centigrade outside. On hot days the Equitector Climate Control prevents your feet from overheating, making them he perfect yearround boots. www.equitector.com

Love the Skin he’s in NAF Love the Skin he’s in Skin Wash is a gentle, unique blend of herbal ingredients, including Aloe Vera, designed to help support damaged or challenged skin, affected by lumps, bumps, rashes or mild irritations. This totally natural skin wash offers the premium skin care your horse or pony deserves either as a hot towel wash following clipping or for a deep clean, as a cold wash for a refreshing cleanse to lift sweat, grease and dust from the coat, or applied directly to the skin in a concentrated form to address specific areas requiring attention. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

rish international polo player Niall Donnelly has taken over the running of the All England Polo Club at Hickstead. He takes over from Sarah Wiseman from Aspect Polo, who will be focusing on playing international polo on the Women’s Tour. “Niall has been closely involved with the club for several years, and we are looking forward to a fantastic 2018/19 winter season under Niall’s stewardship,” said AEPC Chairman, John Bunn. Niall began his polo career at the age of 14 and has gone on to play all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, India and most recently, Barbados. Niall said: “I am looking forward to the upcoming season at Hickstead, and I am hoping to introduce lots of new players to the excitement of Arena Polo, as well as coaching some of the talented young players in the area.” The Hickstead season gets underway with an open weekend of chukkas, followed by regular Club chukkas and tournaments most weekends throughout the winter. The season culminates with the Arena Polo International Test Match on Saturday 2nd March 2019. Tickets for the Test Match will go on sale later this year, and cost just £5 per ticket. Admission and parking for all the other tournaments is free of charge, and spectators are welcome.

Horse of the Year Show The NEC, Birmingham • Wednesday 3rd to Sunday 7th October 2018 Pictures by 1st Class Images

ayne Ross did it again, winning the Ripon Select Foods Supreme Ridden Championship with Dianne Stennett’s beautiful 11-yearold mare, Time 2 Reflect, who had taken the British Show Horse Association Ladies Side Saddle Championship on the opening morning of the show. The team at HOYS said: “To see a side saddle competitor take the title on the 70th running of the Show certainly added a welcome touch of nostalgia, and it was indeed the perfect ‘Time 2 Reflect’.” Talking after the Supreme, Jayne said: “It’s a dream come true.” Jayne Ross and Time 2 Reflect, Ripon Select Foods Supreme Horse of the Year

Adding of Time 2 Reflect: “To come here and do this is just the icing on the cake for a career that’s just surpassed everything you could ever have dreamed of. She’s such a special horse, she’s everybody’s favourite. She gives 110% every time, you just can’t fault her.” Jayne has won the Supreme three times at HOYS, but never on anything other than a Riding Horse. She chuckled saying: “I was beginning to think I was a bit of a one trick pony.”

Maximum Colour Angela Lance headed the Leeman Family Maxi Cob Championship with Imogen Yates’ nine-year-old Colour Index aka Finn. Imogen bought the cob of unknown breeding from Reid Finlay in Ireland as an unbroken four-year-old. Imogen said: “He is home/amateur produced with a wonderful support team who I could not be without. I have an amazing relationship with Angela, who I am very fortunate to be able to just meet at shows for her to compete him for me. Angela has shown him since his career started as a five-year-old. Unfortunately, this year’s preparation for HOYS did not go to plan, as Finn injuried himself in the field and it was touch and go if we would ever get to the show. All I wanted and wished for, was for him to be placed. He surpassed all expectations by winning the class, a dream come true.” Imogen added: “Finn loves to compete and the bigger the audience the better, and he just rose to the occasion.”

Cheeking Charlie Helen Baker rode Anna Stevens’s five-year-old Pendley Muscadel to win the Brereton Small Hack of the Year and to stand Reserve Champion to the 2012 Supreme Champion and winner of the Large Hack, Pearly King, owned and ridden by Sarah Carey. Talking after the Championship, Anna said: Pendley Muscadel is known as Cheeky Charlie at home. He was bred by Jennifer Williams and when my mother found him on the internet she spoke with Charlotte Bond, who worked for Jennifer and knew Charlie as a foal at the Pendley Stud. She said: “He is lovely, you must buy him.” We (my mother, grandmother and I) did buy him, unseen. Luckily as soon as he came off the lorry we loved him. Due to Anna’s shoulder injury, the result of several dislocations, 12 Localrider NOVEMBER 2018

Georgia Darlington and Lisa’s Dream, third NPS/ Snuggy Hoods 153cm Working Hunter Pony

Chloe Chubb and the Dartmoor stallion, Shilstone Rocks North Westerly, first NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain & Moorland Ridden Dartmoor/Exmoor/Shetland the family enlisted the help of family friend, Helen Baker, who lightly showed Charlie as a two-year-old, winning at the South of England and Kent County. Sadly, Charlie missed all of his three-year-old season after suffering a horrible accident at home, which saw him spend two weeks in Bell Equine Hospital. Anna is very grateful to the vets and nurses who lovingly looked after him during this time, nick-naming him “Princess Charlie”. Helen Baker and Pendley Muscadel, His diva status paid first Brereton Small Hack and dividends in his first year Reserve Champion under saddle, when he won the Novice Hack and stood Overall Novice Champion at Spring Ardingly, the first of many wins. Charlie has been lightly shown this year and his preparation for HOYS was all about the atmosphere, with Helen’s niece Phoebe Whiting riding him daily, treating him more like a Pony Club Pony, with ‘round the worlds’ and other Pony Club tricks, to make him the perfect unflappable hack. Anna added: “Both Helen and I think we are still dreaming. We both cannot believe, that our Cheeky Charlie won HOYS 2018 and it is still sinking in. Helen has been trying to win HOYS Hack of the Year since the age of 17, (which is 34 years ago). She says, ‘never give up hope on your dreams.’”

Shilstone Rocks the M&Ms Chloe Chubb rode Lynda Calcutt’s 11-year-old Dartmoor stallion, Shilstone Rocks North Westerly to victory in the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain & Moorland Ridden Dartmoor/Exmoor/Shetland Pony of the Year for second time. The combination won back in 2016, which was also Chloe’s first ever win at HOYS and were fifth in 2012. Chloe said: “He now divides his time between me and his owner, Lynda Calcutt. He was produced by Oliver and Jo Burchell when he was younger but the last three seasons I have done him from home. We joke that I have to ‘re back’ him every time he comes back to me, as he is a very cold backed pony and likes to buck around on the lunge like he has never been ridden before.”

Hannah Horton and Champlers Allsorts, first Coloured Ridden Non-Native Pony

Sister Act Georgia Aungier led her sister Gracie on the 10-year-old Welsh section A, Uphill Toy Soldier, to win the Lead Rein Pony of Hunter Type. Their mother, Alex Aungier said the Judge, Rosemary Hetherington told her that Gracie and Uphill Toy Soldier aka Colinhad wowed her from the moment they walked into the ring. She was impressed with Gracie’s riding, watching her change diagonal, riding the horse into the bridle and doing all the steering herself. The combination had great success in Mountain & Moorland Lead Rein classes, before a lot of clipping and trimming saw Colin transformed into a Show Hunter Pony. A decision which has seen them finish fifth at HOYS in 2015 and third in 2017. Colin now returns to Gracie’s middle sister, Lily, who will ride him in Open Show Hunter Pony classes. As the judge said, if you upscale him, he looks like a heavyweight hunter.

Champlers Allsorts does it again…

Hannah Horton has ridden and produced Rosemary Obbard’s eightyear-old mare, Champlers Allsorts for the last four years, backing and producing her herself. Talking after her win, Hannah said: “Winning at HOYS is the ultimate it’s what everyone works towards and to achieve it is a massive honour. She won HOYS last year but this year she went even better. To win once is amazing at a show where it’s the best of the best, but to win twice is incredible.” NOVEMBER 2018 Localrider 13

mateur show horse riders have been travelling the length and breadth of the country since the first Search for a Star qualifier in April in their quest to qualify for the HOYS finals. Forty lucky amateur riders earned their HOYS tickets across the four Search for a Star classes. Katie Jerram-Hunnable judged conformation and the ride judge was Chris Hunnable, with Claire Oliver riding the horses in the Riding Horse Hack final. Both Katie and Chris spoke over the microphone during the class which provided some very educational and entertaining insights. The winners of each of the six Search for a Star sections throughout the week at HOYS went forward to the Search for a Star Championship in the International Arena on the Friday evening of HOYS. Hannah Moore’s stunning grey mare, Follow Her Home excelled in the main HOYS arena to take the top prize. Best of the locals was Sam GiffordBrown from Kent with her 12-year-old grey gelding, Swiper, finishing second in the Cob final. Sam who is a sports therapist and BHS riding coach, has owned Swiper since he was an unbroken threeyear-old. Shane Carter and Grantstown Sandman finished third in the Working Horse final. Shane likes to set a goal for herself and the versatile dun gelding every year. In 2016 they competed in British Eventing competitions, finishing the season as South East Eventers League winners. Last year they contested British Dressage competitions and were placed at the Festival of Dressage. Now the talented combination have completed their 2018 goal of qualifying for HOYS. Dinah Smith and her Connemara pony, Culmoe JJ finished third in the Working Pony final. 61-year-old Dinah has lived in several countries in Europe, including Germany and Belgium and has always had horses who have moved countries with her. Dinah and Culmore JJ compete in lots of different things including Riding Club, British Showjumping and British Eventing. Cassie James rode Clare Grayman’s Welsh section C, Bodwenarth Free-Way, to finish fourth in the Working Pony final. Cassie works at the Liphook Veterinary Hospital in Hampshire and when Bodwenarth Free-Way suffered from severe laminitis, the team of vets at Liphook helped Cassie hugely with keeping Bobby fit and sound. SEIB Marketing Manager Nicolina Mackenzie said: “The Search for a Star finals have been at HOYS for 20 years now. Search for a Star continues to grow and we have had so many truly hardworking people that have got involved because they love their horses and getting out showing with them. Looking ahead to next year we are delighted to be welcoming one of our former Search for a Star champions back as a judge. Jordan Cook was the 2007 Search for a Star champion and we are thrilled to be welcoming him on to the team.”

Time to review and refurbish your existing stable block

As the competition season, and summer, comes to an end, it is a good time to start reflecting on your needs for 2019. What changes do you need to make to your yard, and the way it is organised, that will help you get ahead next year?

W

hen you invest your time and money into horses, their safety and security is paramount. Investing in Scotts of Thrapston replacement doors and windows will make a difference to their comfort and reduce the chance of injury. Established in 1920, Scotts of Thrapston is the country’s leading supplier of bespoke timber stables and equestrian buildings, with an unrivalled reputation for design expertise, quality and service. You can undertake some simple checks to see if your doors and windows are showing signs that they need repairing or replacing… • Has the timber deteriorated? Does the timber need a coat of paint or stain? Or are the doors and windows too rotten to work with? • Have the doors dropped? Are the bolts hard to operate? If so, they could be difficult to open, creating a potential hazard for your horses and their handlers. It may be that the hinges simply need adjusting or perhaps it is time to replace them. • Is the window glass broken, falling out or not laminated for safety? Non-laminated glass should never be used for stabling. Laminating the glass stops shards from entering the stable, if unfortunate enough to be shattered. • Do your windows open or have a vent action? If not, it is likely that your horse is not getting adequate ventilation and this will impact their respiratory health. This is significantly important if your horse has specific issues like COPD. • If you have integral grilles on your windows, are they bowing or rusting? • Has any metal work split or got sharp

edges? As standard, Scotts doors and frames come with rounded edges for the safety of your horses. They also have a deep galvanised steel anti-chew capping to the bottom door and full galvanised metal sheet to the inside. • If the doors and windows do need replacing, are they unusual in shape or size? If so, Scotts designs and manufactures to suit your requirements. As well as bespoke stable doors, Scotts also offers sliding barn doors, pony height doors, feed room doors, high security tack room doors and garage doors. • Are you looking for alternative materials? Scotts standard doors are manufactured in pressure impregnated European Redwood but can be supplied in hardwoods or even composite materials, as required.

range of stable windows and doors, for your stable development or refurbishment, as well as a host of other accessories. Their extensive product range can be purchased to standard specifications or manufactured to your own individual requirements. Visiting the Scotts website allows users to review the various items, along with providing comprehensive technical details and prices for each standard product. The prices allow users to budget for future purchases, which makes it easy to plan a project over time to fit your cash flow and circumstances.

• After this long hot summer, now is a good time to consider putting in solid or glazed rear top doors to provide extra light in the darker months and additional ventilation in the warmer weather. They help to create cross ventilation in the box and also to give your horse different perspectives to look out on to.

Refurbish your stables If you are looking to refurbish existing timber stables, or want to upgrade the quality of finish, Scotts provides a comprehensive range of doors and windows. They are built to complement both brand new buildings in timber or brick and block as well as period stable blocks in brick or stone. You can choose to colour match with your properties paint work for a cohesive look to your stable and home. Scotts of Thrapston can supply a standard

T

he horse’s skin and coat appearance is a good indicator of the equine’s overall health. Is it dull and scurfy, or bright and lustrous? While it can be hard to achieve a smart and shiny coat in winter, depending on the horse’s circumstances, a dull or very sparse coat is a warning sign, and could be an early indicator of a nutritional deficiency, or some other kind of wellness issue.

Hair structure

Let’s look at hair structure. Each hair on the horse’s coat grows from a follicle, containing muscles, glands and blood vessels; these produce hair cells. The equine coat is made up of millions of layered hairs, with a core called the medulla; equine mane and tail hairs have larger medullas than the body hairs. The cortex is the bulk of the hair shaft. This layer is 85 percent keratin, which also makes up the hoof walls, and also contains water, fats, melanin pigment and minerals. The outermost layer of the hair shaft is the cuticle, which gives the coat its outward appearance. Rough hair that lacks sufficient oil reflects light randomly, giving a duller appearance. (Sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, a natural oil that coats each strand, provide a protective barrier for both the skin and hair, flattening the scales of the cuticle, causing them to reflect light.)

Healthy equine coats

Let’s also look at what we need nutritionally, for a healthy coat, – coat sheen actually starts on the inside, as the horse’s diet can influence all areas of health. Essential fatty acids (EFAs): These fats must come from the diet; fresh grass has a good fat content of 3% to 5% fat. Omega-6 fats notably help boost skin health. Protein: Protein is a key element of all body tissue, which of course includes skin, hooves and cartilage. Lecithin: Another key ingredient to look out for is Lecithin, which supplies phospholipids, major components of cell membranes. Digestive aids: A healthy equine gut promotes overall health, so diets should be fibre-rich; the addition of compounds such as yeasts and microbial feed supplements with probiotics boosts gut micro-flora.

Hair we go again! With winter approaching, we’re all well-used to the clipping and rugging cycle that we undergo in order to keep our working horses happy and in good health. But autumn and winter regimes can adversely affect the appearance of our horses’ coats. So can we actually improve their appearance, and achieve a lovely, healthy coat shine? Stephen Biddlecombe explains…

Vitamins and minerals: Certain vitamins are specifically known to help boost coat health, particularly Biotin, and Vitamins A and B6.

Get grooming!

Grooming products can also positively affect coat health. The brushing we conduct with a soft brush encourages circulation and stimulates sebum, while the shampoos we choose ideally help clean and care for the coat, without irritating the skin. Meanwhile, equine hair conditioners restore oil to the hair structures, and may also smooth the cuticle

Achieving a super-shine, despite the winter weather

So, we asked how it’s possible to achieve a lovely, healthy coat shine… and the answer is a balanced diet, regular grooming and targeted haircare products that promote shine. For more information visit www.worldwidetack.com We love the new Mane ‘n Tail Ultimate Gloss collection from leading American brand, Straight Arrow Products Inc. The Mane ‘n Tail Ultimate Gloss Shampoo provides your horse with a gentle, deep cleansing wash, leaving the coat soft and silky with a premium, reflective shine. A bitting world-first:

How mouth moulding is enhancing equine comfort Words by Bombers Bits brand ambassador, Sue Gilliatt

T

he team at Bombers Bits has pioneered a new mouth moulding concept that aims to accurately fit a bit mouthpiece to the horse’s mouth conformation, in conjunction with an Equine Dental Technician (EDT). With a mould of the horse’s mouth bars made, we’re then able to prescribe cheek pieces to match the horse’s discipline, and the rider’s needs. We know from working with EDTs that many horses have an unusual mouth conformation, for example, bars under the tongue that are irregularly shaped, bone spurs and even non-erupted wolf teeth. Taking a mouth mould helps the team – the EDT, myself (Sue Gilliatt), the horse owner and any other parties, like the trainer – choose a bit that really reduces mouth pressures, and maximises equine comfort.

Left: Andrew Hoy finished fourth at the World Equestrian Games with Vassily De Lassos, who underwent the bit prescription process. Below: Shane Breen is a fan of Bombers Bits.

Does the bit enhance performance?

So, could a bit that has been custom fitted actually enhance performance? If other elements, like equine health, relevant training and rider ability are all in place, then without question, and demonstrably so. Look at some of the signs a horse shows, due to mouth discomfort – leaning on the bit, tightening the back, shifting the tongue around – whether you’re asking for thoroughness and harmony in a dressage test, or quick reactions in a show jumping arena, a comfortable horse is more likely to perform better. (Local showjumper Shane Breen, an ambassador for Bombers, can certainly attest to that; he’s currently on top form, and constantly being placed in elite international jumping classes.)

The moulding process

During the moulding process, the EDT opens the horse’s mouth up, checking elements like the size of the tongue and thickness of the jowls, and the presence of any bar spurs. We then mould the horse’s bars, where the bit mouthpiece sits, using high-detail impression material, taking an exact replica of the horse’s bars. This mould is then set in Plaster of Paris; we then prescribe a comfortable bit.

days of ‘trying’ different bits that suit the rider, or visually choosing from a shelf of tack-room bits, are over. “Fitting and choosing a bit isn’t just about eliminating discomfort and pressure; bitting is also about helping the horse reach its physical potential, and achieving the best competitive result on the day.” The Bombers Bits team is returning to the UK for mouth moulding workshops in the new year, and will be visiting the the South East. Contact sue@gilliattholdings.com to register your interest. Follow facebook.com/BomberBlueBitsUK for moulding opportunities and developments.

Loved by elite riders

Leading riders including Australian eventer Andrew Hoy, now Bombers Bits’ Elite Rider & Technical Development Partner, have utilised the moulding process; meanwhile, New Zealand eventer and Bombers Bits ambassador, Caroline Powell, recently took advantage of a moulding workshop conducted in the East of England with leading retailer and bitting specialist, Forelock and Load. “Anything that offers an extra competitive advantage is a huge bonus. After seeing the mouldings, it explained a lot of the issues which were being displayed by each horse. I cannot wait for the for the 2019 season,” says Caroline. Forelock and Load’s MD Kirstie Johnston explains that, being passionate about bitting, she knew she had to be involved with the moulding workshops. “Bombers Bits are at the forefront of lorinery - the bits are handmade, allowing for much smaller joints than with a machine-pressed bit; horses are now bred with much smaller Vassily De Lassos’s reccomended mouths and narrower jaws,” Kirstie bit, the ‘Bombers Lock Up Ultra explains. “Utilising mouldings, you Comfy Loose Ring’, includes extra can definitely fine-tune established curvature and tongue relief. horses, for example, see how the horse relaxes and its stride lengthens.”

Pick your horse’s feet out daily

Daily Checks in Winter

ne job that you should never compromise on is a daily check on your horse. It can be tempting to just throw your horse out in the field in a rush to get the mucking out done, but this could mean you miss an opportunity to spot an injury early and take prompt action. When first aid treatment is administered quickly and effectively, it can have a big influence on the outcome of an injury. A minor cut or graze that is treated correctly using the basic contents of your first aid kit will heal up in no time, leaving no lasting damage. However, if the wound goes unnoticed, infection can take hold in as little as six to eight hours. Thick coats and winter rugs can hide a multitude of sins, so in winter it is important to take even more time and look even closer, as even slight weight loss can be hidden under a winter coat. Routines during winter are vital to ensure everything runs smoothly, so in your morning or evening routine try to adopt a simple set of health checks.

During the winter months there never seem to be enough hours in the day, so when it seems like you have to cram more jobs into fewer hours, some things can get pushed to the bottom of the pile of priority. Here Robinson Animal Healthcare share the daily health checks and observations they recommend.

The licensed veterinary poultice from Robinson Animal Healthcare

Daily checks Observation – On entering the stable in the morning or the field in the evening, observe your horse. How does he look? Is he alert, with pricked ears and interested in your presence? Stance – It is perfectly normal for a horse to rest a hind leg but resting a front leg or being reluctant to move could indicate a problem. Check the Legs – Rub your hands down all four legs, checking for wounds and feeling for any bumps and swellings. Hooves – Pick feet out daily and place a hand on all four hooves to check for heat. Heat accompanied by sudden onset of lameness could indicate an abscess. Droppings – Check the frequency and consistency of droppings. Has your horse passed the sufficient number of droppings since your last visit? Picking up on subtle changes early can make a real difference to the outcome, particularly when faced with a horse suffering from colic. Get Hands-on – Remove rugs every day and run your hands over his body, checking for areas where the rug may have rubbed and also to keep an eye on body condition. The coat should be smooth and shiny. Robinson Animal Healthcare has a wide range of products for all your first aid requirements including the market leading Animalintex, which is the only VMD licensed multi-layered absorbent poultice available in the UK and the legendary Veterinary Gamgee. Remember the ‘hidden’ worms this winter While faecal worm egg counts (FWECs) can help you keep control of worms during the grazing season some pesky parasites need special attention during the autumn and winter, particularly encysted small redworm (ESRW) says Dr Wendy Talbot, the national equine veterinary manager at Zoetis.

S

mall redworm larvae are ingested when your horse is grazing. In the autumn and winter as the temperature drops they bury themselves in the intestinal wall where they form cysts and stop their development, to hibernate during the colder weather. Up to 90% of small redworms in your horse may be these hidden ‘encysted’ small redworm.1

small redworm: a single dose of moxidectin or a five-day course of fenbendazole. •

There is widespread evidence of resistance in small redworm to fenbendazole, including the five-day dose so a resistance test is recommended before using it.2

Treating with a wormer that does not specifically target the encysted stages (ivermectin, pyrantel or single dose fenbendazole) during late autumn and winter can actually increase the risk of a horse with a high ESRW burden developing larval cyathostominosis.3

Moxidectin has high efficacy against adult small redworm including encysted mucosal larvae.4

Faecal worm egg counts don’t work for encysted small redworm

Because they are hibernating, these encysted small redworm won’t show in faecal worm egg counts. In fact a horse could have a burden of several million encysted small redworm larvae yet show a negative or low FWEC.2

Threat of fatal disease

In the spring the small redworm larvae can erupt from their hibernation in large numbers, breaking and damaging the lining of the intestinal wall, which can cause diarrhoea, weight loss and colic. This condition (known as larval cyathostominosis) can be fatal, especially in young horses.2,3

How to treat for encysted small redworm • There is currently no effective test for encysted stages

• All horses of more than six months of age should be dosed for encysted small redworm in November/December regardless of their FWEC2. •

There are only two active ingredients licensed to treat encysted

World Class

The Sussex Equine Hospital (SEH) has expanded considerably over the last five years, now employing four surgeons and an internal medicine specialist. It has increased the facilities and equipment within the hospital at its brand new facilities in Ashington, West Sussex, to be able to cope with the new and demanding world of equine veterinary medicine, including advanced imagining, such as gamma scintigraphy and magnetic resonance. This has allowed the practice to be able to expand its services and maintain its position as one of the longest-standing and progressive equine practices in the UK.

Part II

In the last issue we introduced you to Hospital Director and Equine Surgeon, Andrew Crawford and Equine Surgeon, Luis Rubio-Martinez. Here we meet a few more of the team practising at the Sussex Equine Hospital.

Chris Baldwin

BVetMed(hons) MRCVS Chris is a resident in Equine Surgery. After graduating from the Royal Veterinary College London in 2012, Chris worked as a hospital intern at the Newmarket Equine Hospital for two years. After this he joined the Arundel Equine Hospital (now the SEH) as an ambulatory veterinary associate in 2014. In 2017 Chris was awarded the first surgical residency at the SEH, a structured and demanding fouryear training programme required to become eligible to sit Board examination ECVS. Already during his training Chris has spoken internationally at the 2018 European College of Veterinary Surgeons Annual Conference, conducted research on carpal slab fractures and been involved in upper respiratory research.

Nigel Woodford

BVSc CERTEP CERTEM(Stud Med) DipECVS MRCVS Nigel started his veterinary life in mixed practice in Horsham and then moved into equine practice, initially as an assistant and then as a partner in Newbury. This was followed by a season in Scone, Australia, as a resident stud vet with Swettenham Stud. Nigel took an equine locum surgeon post at Onderstepoort, one of the two South African veterinary schools and this was followed by a residency at the Bristol Vet School. This translated into a member of the equine surgical staff three years later and after eight years he moved to Salisbury as an equine surgeon, before joining the team at Sussex Equine Hospital. Nigel has worked at Badminton Horse Trials for over 20 years and has even been sent to Mauritius on one occasion to operate on a horse’s eye. Nigel has ample varied experience and has talked at numerous venues. He will also be speaking at the next London Vet Show in November 2018. Nigel is also an RCVS and European Specialist in Equine Surgery.

feature Hannah-Sophie Chapman BVSc MRCVS

Hannah-Sophie joined the SEH in July 2018 after completing her large animal surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, where she trained under world renowned orthopaedic, soft-tissue and emergency surgeons. She has made contributions to the scientific literature in both veterinary and human medical journals, with a focus on orthopaedic surgery and the use of biological therapy to treat orthopaedic disease and injury. Native to both Austria and the UK, Hannah was born in Japan and spent her younger years living in various Asian countries. She completed her veterinary education and a rotating internship in equine medicine and surgery at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her second rotating internship, at Cornell University’s Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists, took her to New York, USA. From there she then moved the relatively shorter distance to New Bolton Center, nestled in Pennsylvania’s horse country. Hannah greatly enjoys helping her clients and patients reach their full athletic potential and providing emergency care in critical situations. Her personal riding experience lies primarily in the dressage ring, however in a professional capacity she has experience with all equids from miniature donkeys and ponies, performance Warmbloods, racing Thoroughbreds, Standardbred, Arabian and Quarter Horses to beer-wagon drawing Clydesdales! In February, Hannah will be sitting her final set of specialist examinations to become a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Large Animal Surgery.

Natasha Jocelyn

MA VetMB MvetMed MRCVS Natasha, who grew up in Suffolk, is the newest member to join the SEH. Natasha qualified from Cambridge University in 2011 having completed a BA during her veterinary degree in zoology. After graduating she spent four years in equine-only ambulatory practice in Gloucestershire, mainly working with Polo ponies and Sports horses with a heavy caseload of orthopaedic cases, but also a mix across the first opinion practice spectrum. Natasha then spent a winter season in South Australia, in the Adelaide Hills in racehorse and pleasure practice. She then undertook a residency in Equine Internal Medicine starting in 2015 at the Royal Veterinary College and gained a Masters in Veterinary Medicine graduating in 2018. During her residency she has published the following research papers: “Association of neutrophil morphology with bacterial isolates in equine tracheal wash samples” and “Effect of varying the dose of corn syrup on the insulin and glucose response to the oral sugar test”, both presented at BEVA congress 2017 and published in EVJ. During her residency Natasha spent time at other institutions including Rossdales, Ghent in Belgium and New Bolton Centre in USA. She enjoys all aspects of internal medicine but is particularly interested in critical care of adults and neonates, neurology, gastroenterology and respiratory disease. Natasha will be taking Specialist Board examination on Equine Internal Medicine in January 2019. The Sussex equine Hospital remains committed to providing the best facilities and equine care to be found anywhere and welcomes referrals from around the UK. Winter Feeding

FEED NEWS

In this issue we look at a range of feeds and supplements to keep your horse fit and healthy this winter. Remember all the big brands have telephone helplines and if you are worried about your horse’s diet this winter, we recommend giving them a call. Mollichaff Condition Complete With the possibility of a hard winter ahead and forage prices increasing, you can provide additional high quality digestible fibre by feeding a fibrebased feed in place of cereals. If you have an underweight horse or pony or one that tends to lose weight over the colder months and then struggles to put it on again, Mollichaff Condition Complete may be the ideal feed choice. Mollichaff Condition Complete is a highly digestible, high fibre, high oil and low starch blend in a single bag. It can be fed as a complete concentrate feed alongside good quality forage, when fed at the recommended levels, and contains a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement. It is made from a balanced blend of alfalfa, dried grass, oat straw, fibre pellets, barley, soya flakes, soya oil and mint, plus Yeasacc (a natural live yeast culture) and a prebiotic to help maintain a healthy digestive system. Essential fatty acids are provided by the soya oil to help maintain healthy skin and encourage a glossy coat. Because it is a fibre-based feed, it provides a more natural way of feeding your horse or pony compared to a high cereal diet. The addition of mint makes Mollichaff Condition Complete particularly appealing to horses because of its taste and aroma. www.horsehage.co.uk

Dodson & Horrell Build & Glow Build & Glow is a calorie-rich, pelleted supplement to help aid weight gain and coat condition, it is formulated to give an outstanding source of dense and concentrated calories. Dodson & Horrell Build & Glow is ideal for show and performance horses and ponies, those who are poor doers or individuals going through a period of unwanted weight loss which can be common during the winter months. Available in store from 5th November. www.dodsonandhorrell.com

TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support contains an excellent specification of nutrients to help the development and maintenance of healthy joints. Synovial joints are stabilised by a complex network of tendons, ligaments and muscles in and around the joint, and by the joint capsule itself. In ideal circumstances this enables joints to function smoothly and comfortably. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support is designed to help support joints subject to excess trauma and/or repeated wear and tear. It is particularly suitable for horses working hard and elderly horses. It contains a generous combination of Glucosamine and MSM. It also contains an antioxidant blend of vitamins C, E, beta-carotene and natural tocopherols which help combat excess free radicals around the joint. www.topspec.com

Dodson & Horrell Build Up Conditioning Mix Whether your horse or pony is involved with showing, needs a one-off helping hand in building up to the optimum weight, or a high calorie feed all year round, Build Up Conditioning Mix is the ideal way to help with weight gain in a controlled, slow release way. The highly palatable mix is fully fortified with a comprehensive blend of vitamins and minerals with added B vitamins to encourage eating up. It is high in oil for condition and slow release of energy with added L-Lysine helps to promote muscle condition and top-line. The formula contains micro-managed cooked cereals with added magnesium to encourage calmness while probiotic live Actisaf yeast promotes digestive health and efficiency. Available in store from 5th November. Through November and December Dodson & Horrell Build Up Conditioning Mix has 10% Extra Free so it is a great time to give it a go! www.dodsonandhorrell.com

Baileys Meadow Sweet with Turmeric Baileys have reformulated their Meadow Sweet mix which now contains turmeric. All whole cereal flakes have been removed, to bring starch and sugar levels down to 7.5% and 5%, respectively, making it ideal for stressy or fizzy types with low to moderate energy requirements. It is high in fibre, at 20%, and contains Baileys Light Chaff to encourage chewing without the need for additional chops or chaff. Meadow Sweet still has a light coating of honey, with its natural prebiotic sugars, but is molasses-free so will appeal to owners with sensitive equines. The inclusion of TurmerAid brings all the benefits of this modern pelleted complete turmeric supplement, which contains ingredients to support healthy joints, immunity and wellbeing. Meadow Sweet is the first fully balanced feed to contain TurmerAid and will deliver it at appropriate levels, when fed according to recommendations. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ pelleted feed that is formulated without cereal grains and is low in sugar and starch. It contains many supplements combined with good quality protein to promote muscle development and topline. The supplements include a topspecification broad-spectrum supplement and specialised supplements including a superb hoof supplement, generous levels of anti-oxidants and sophisticated digestive aids. This superb specification allows horses to utilise far more nutrients from the forage and straights in their diet, which usually means that their hard feed intake can be reduced with many resulting benefits. Comprehensive Feed Balancer is a very flexible, nutrient-rich feed designed to balance the rations of most horses and ponies simply by adjusting the rate at which it is fed and the products it is fed with. When Comprehensive Feed Balancer is fed there is therefore often no need to add any further supplements, other than salt and/ or electrolytes for sweating horses. www.topspec.com

NAF GastriVet Pellets GastriVet is a totally natural, nutritional formula recommended by vets to promote a healthy gastric environment. Specifically, selected herbs support the horse’s own anti-inflammatory process, di calcium phosphate to soothe stomach walls and probiotic yeasts to balance the pH levels in the gut. Developed by world leading veterinary scientists and nutritionists, GastriVet is a proven formula ideal for competition and performance horses or ponies, GastriVet can also support the benefits of veterinary treatment when used as part of an aftercare regime. NAF recommend GastriVet alongside or post veterinary treatment, when gastric upset is evident and proven and when stereotypic behaviour is witnessed. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Lifeforce Range from Alltech Live strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are commonly used in equine nutrition to enhance fibre digestion in horses. The overall effect of adding yeast to the diet is the stimulation of fibredigestion, as well as stabilisation, of the hindgut environment and microbial ecosystem. The Lifeforce Range from Alltech has been tailored to meet the needs of horses at every stage of life from the early developmental stages as a foal, through the demands of competition, and well into retirement. The range consists of three all natural, daily nutritional supplements backed by more than 30 years of Alltech’s scientifically proven, fully traceable technologies. Each specialised supplement delivers the right balance of natural ingredients to optimise digestive health for horses. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

tried&tested Aubiose Aubiose is a completely different type of bedding and should provide you with savings in time and labour if it is managed properly. The bedding works by soaking up liquids in a small area, at the base of the bed. The capped layer that forms over this saturated material reduces the chance of wet bedding being mixed in with the dry. The top layer of the bed remains warm, soft and dry for the horse. Aubiose is a 100% natural material, which composts readily without the need for added composting agents. Furthermore, Aubiose is an annually renewable resource, which can be traced back to the field in which it was grown. Most importantly Aubiose is good for your horse, providing a clean, natural and healthy stable environment giving extended nights for him and extended days for you. www.aubiose.co.uk LR Comment: Aubiose makes a supportive, firm bed. They suggest that you only need to remove the wet from the bed every 5 - 10 days. I did this once a week and was amazed that I only removed less than a wheelbarrow of wet each week. Although it is a little more expensive than the shavings I have used previously, I topped up the bed less frequently, making it surprisingly cost effective. Not having to put the bed up every day was very time saving and the bed maintained its tidy, clean appearance. The bed is quite firm, so the droppings generally sit on the top and are easy to remove. Generally, it felt low maintenance and there was less added to the muck heap. It also appeals that it is a plant by product that apparently will rot down very quickly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Bedding Tried & Tested

With winter approaching our horses will start to spend longer in their stables and with this in mind we have been trialling a variety of different beddings over the last six weeks. The horses trialling the bedding have ranged from super clean to downright messy! Here are our findings… PelletCo Quality Wood Pellets PelletCo Ltd supply quality 100% sustainable wood pellets made from 100% virgin wood. Available in 15g bags the benefits include: 1 You need less storage space than some other types of bedding 2 The smaller bags are easier to handle than big bales. 3 It is easy to see the wet patches, which saves time when mucking out. 4 Once the bed is down, you only have to top up with small amounts of pellets at a time. 5 The pellet bed contains minimal amounts of dust and absorbs odours. 6 It is easy to dispose of, as there is less volume than other beddings, and it biodegrades quickly when spread on land.

www.pelletco.co.uk LR Comment: The bags are easy to handle and convenient to store as they are less than half the size of a conventional shavings bale. When you add the water the absorbency is impressive and the pellets quickly grow to over twice the volume, but oddly they don’t feel wet. The bed has a soft “crumbled custard cream” texture with a fresh smell. Maintenance was straight forward, the droppings sit on the top and are therefore easy to separate from the bed. The wet is super absorbed into the bedding and it is easy to scrape away the clean and remove the wet which stays contained in a small patch making it unnecessary to put the whole bed up each day. However, I found that once a week it is a good idea to lift the bed and turn it as areas can get packed down a bit like sand. So, if you like a fluffier bed turning will achieve this. I would definitely recommend it. It is compact to store and handle and relatively low maintenance to achieve a clean attractive bed.

Don’t let the cost of your bedding give you sleepless nights

Autumn Offer! Investing in affordable luxury Once you have set your Aubiose bed, it will only need topping up every five to fourteen days (depending on the horse/pony). Liquids are soaked up in a small area and are retained there, so there is less chance of wet material mixing with the rest of the bed. The top layer remains warm, soft and dry. Aubiose is an excellent compost material which breaks down rapidly and keeps the muck heap to a minimum. Managed correctly, Aubiose will save you both time and money.

“Since feeding TopSpec Cool Balancer, my horse Dundee is in wonderful condition. She is a sharp mare and TopSpec Cool Balancer makes her feel great without the fizz.” Shona Edwards *Available from participating retailers throughout October and November and whilst promotional stocks last. Normal RRP £23.95.

A bag will last a 500kg horse for 30 days. A 500kg horse gets 500g per day which equals two measures a day.

Bedding Tried & Tested Continued.... BEDMAX

beDmAX is made specifically for bedding all stabled horses, it is easy-to-use, contains no preservatives and benefits from the antiseptic properties associated with pine. The flakes are designed to produce a deeper, more aerated bed and are made in strictly controlled conditions. New investment and development ensures beDmAX provides a healthy, dust-free, stable environment, maximises cushioning for joints, controls moisture, and provides maximum comfort and support. LR Comment: These large flake pine shavings produce a lovely deep bed and large dense banks. My horse is fairly messy in his stable, yet I found it easy to muck out and there was minimal waste of the bedding. According to the company’s website Bedmax has a very low level of dust and spores, which is reassuring

www.bedmaxshavings.com

LITTLEMAX

LITTLemAX is designed for those horse owners who prefer a small flake shaving. Containing no preservatives, LITTLemAX is dust free, absorbent, economical and easy-to-use. This is a bedding which provides a healthy, dust-free, stable environment which maximises cushioning for joints, controls moisture, and provides maximum comfort and support. LR Comment: I really like Littlemax, it produces a deep cushioning bed, which looks clean and bright. I have a particularly clean and tidy horse and found it was easy to muck out and keep the stable clean. After the first couple of weeks I also tried it as a deep litter bed and it worked very well.

www.bedmaxshavings.com

FIBREMAX FIbremAX is made using recycled wood fibre and is specifically designed to offer horse owners sustainable, affordable bedding that provides high levels of comfort and absorbency in the stable. It comes with all the assurance of consistent quality associated with all other beDmAX products; it is dried at sterilising temperatures, dust extracted and can be easily composted after use. LR Comment: The Fibremax formed a good solid base to the bed. I found it very easy to muck out and it worked wonderfully as a deep littered bed. The bales were slightly smaller than some, so I found them easy to lift and move around, which could be a bonus if someone struggles to move larger bales.
