s a fabulous summer draws to a close we reflect on a sensational season of shows and competitions. I am certain that there has been something to do with your horse or pony every day of the week from June to September, whether it be a clinic, camp, show or other competition. This issue is bursting with pictures from a varied array of events including driving, endurance, eventing, show jumping, Pony Club, polo, fun rides, beach rides and adult camps too. Over the summer we have also seen the British Showjumping Championships at Stoneleigh, where South East based riders excelled in both the Horse and Pony finals. Turn to page 27 to find just who was in the ribbons. The Magic Millions Festival of British Eventing which is held at Gatcombe Park sees some of the country’s finest event horses and leading riders come together to compete. The new British Open Champion, Christopher Burton, currently the fastest rider across country, might be Australian, but he is definitely ‘local’. You can read all about his win and the other local champions on page 32. Since the last issue we have been to Hickstead twice. The Derby Meeting had a fairy tale ending when William Funnell equalled the Derby greats, such as Eddie Macken and John and Michael Whitaker, when he won the Al Shira’ aa Hickstead Derby for a fourth time, riding a homebred horse, Billy Buckingham. (See page 10) Another homebred horse caught our attention at the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup of Great Britain at Hickstead. Ben and Graham Dalton’s EFS Top Contender jumped clear in the second round of the Nations Cup in a round which was later to be described as crucial to Ireland’s win. Ridden by Michael Duffy for the last 12 months, EFS Top Contender has led the jet set life of an international showjumper, but we discover he is never happier than when he is at home being adored by Ben and his partner Charlotte Packham and their children. You can read all about the horse ‘with a heart of gold’ on page 14. Autumn is always a wonderful time of year to be riding. Whether you are out competing, heading to HOYs or hacking at home, have fun and remember to let us know if you have a good result or story.

NEWS Mountain Horse celebrates its 30th Anniversary

I

nternational clothing and footwear brand Mountain Horse is celebrating its 30th anniversary in style with the launch of its new autumn winter range in September, which includes a 100 per cent British made jacket, and a continuing pledge to increase the work it does to reduce its impact on the environment. Sustainability plays a huge part in the ethos of Mountain Horse, and at its head office in Valda, Sweden, the team works hard to source environmentally friendly materials, and to reduce water, energy and chemicals while maintaining a strong stance against animal cruelty. Founded in Sweden in1988 by Lars Sjosward, Mountain Horse is renowned for its high quality, technical riding gear. The company remains in family ownership with Lars’ daughter Catherina Brolund head of international marketing and his son Rolf supervising all footwear development, bringing the latest innovations and technology to an ever-growing and demanding equestrian marketplace while paying careful consideration to the environment and its sourcing of animal-derived products. The new collection includes a 100 per cent British-made oilskin jacket, the Oilskin Oak, it’s cut in a feminine shape and oozes style and class, but its practical too, with pockets and zips in all the right places. Catherina said: “It’s a revival product that was really popular several years ago and it’s now made in the UK as we believe it is the most experienced at manufacturing oilskin products.”

WIN! To coincide with the celebrations Mountain Horse are going to dress one reader in style. The prize includes an Oilskin Oak Ladies Jacket, Tara Hat, Tara Socks and Ayla Tech Top. For your chance to win simply complete the entry form on page 40.

SEIB Insurance Brokers to give £100K in 2019 Following the success of the launch of SEIB Giving in 2018, SEIB Insurance Brokers will grant £100,000 to good causes in 2019. The winning charity will receive a grant of £50,000 and another £50,000 will be split between other good causes. SEIB are asking the general public to put forward their nominations for the charity they would like to see win the £50K. Nominations are now open and will close on the 30th November. Once a shortlist of charities has been drawn up, SEIB clients will have the final vote for their favourite project. The winning charity and runners-up will be announced at the SEIB Charity Awards Luncheon on the 22nd March 2019. SEIB Chief Executive Officer Barry Fehler explained: “We were delighted to be able to hold our first Charity Awards in 2018 and owing to their success the total amount we have for charity has doubled to £100,000 for 2019. SEIB is so successful because we are totally customer focussed and this is another way that our clients can have their say.” Always known for ‘putting something back’, SEIB is a commercial business with a charitable purpose. The company insures numerous charities and not for profit organisations. SEIB is an independent broker but is ultimately owned by a charity called the Allchurches Trust Limited and profits are used for good causes. SEIB’s immediate owner, the Ecclesiastical Insurance Office Plc, aims to give £100million for good causes through the Allchurches Trust by 2020. No charity is too small to be in the running for the 2019 SEIB charity giving, but turnover is capped at £15m. The grant will have to be used for a specific project which will make a true difference to the cause it is aimed at. All charities will need to be UK registered and projects are to be UK based but past winners will not be eligible.

Introducing AKC Veterinary Ltd Owned and run by Dr Annika Carraher MRCVS, an experienced vet, chiropractor and acupuncturist, with a knowledge of competitive equine and canine sporting activities, as well as rehabilitation. Treating National and International competition eventers and show horses through to Crufts champions and pets. Annika works throughout Surrey, Sussex, Kent and Hampshire (visits further a field can be arranged).

Mr Fehler continued: “SEIB believe that some of their company profits should be used to contribute to the common good. Our company really wants to make a difference — for example, £50,000 could fund a new sensory room at a children’s hospice, a kennel or stable block for an animal charity or for a homeless charity to purchase more facilities. The choices are endless.” Giving is embedded in the culture of SEIB. From supporting grass roots competition that gives opportunities to amateur riders that they could only otherwise dream about, right through to the company’s long-term commitment to the Animal Health Trust who are developing a vaccine for Grass Sickness. Shires Equestrian Celebrates 50th Anniversary

StrideFree Saddles in the UK KM Elite Products are delighted to announce that they have been appointed as exclusive distributors for Peter Horobin Saddles (PHS) in the UK. StrideFree by PHS has taken performance saddles to a whole new level by taking saddle fitting back to basics, by creating convenience for the customer and focusing on equine back health. PHS have developed an extensive saddle range for racing, dressage, jumping and endurance disciplines with the StrideFree racing tree winning the BETA Innovation Award in 2014. The StrideFree technology provides a saddle design that is extremely flexible but incredibly strong, allowing the saddle to mould to the horse’s back, giving freedom in the shoulder for further extension of more movement in stride. Instead of having tree points which dig into the horse’s scapula/trapezius muscle, the StrideFree tree has a more even load bearing surface providing ultimate comfort for both horse and rider. The new performance range saddles are fully adjustable by a qualified and trained KM Elite saddle fitter. This caters for extra wide to narrow fitting horses. The tree comes with a lifetime warranty – subject to terms and conditions. KM Elite Products have carefully selected a network of expert Master Saddlers throughout the UK who have been personally trained by Peter and can custom fit the saddles to your horse. To be referred to your nearest saddle fitter please call the KM Elite office on 01403 759659 or visit www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

Shires Equestrian turns 50 this September. From humble beginnings, the company has evolved into a trusted household brand. Malcolm Ainge, founder of Shires Equestrian, started the company in 1968 with only a small loan of stock to sell at cattle markets and racecourse auctions. Now the company has approximately 1800 stockists worldwide and recently won BETA’s award for Trade Supplier of the Year for the second year in a row. Originally based in Pershore, it was Malcolm’s dedication to his customers that set the company on its way. Listening to feedback about the poor fit of some of the products currently in the market, Malcolm and his father-in-law, Phil White, realised that by diversifying they could produce a better quality of product for their customers. Using profits from sales, they purchased a sewing machine and designed a pattern for saddlecloths, before moving on to rugs. The rugs proved so popular they were soon selling all around the UK and Europe. From making rugs on a single sewing machine, in 1976 Shires made the move to a bigger factory in Bromyard. The company grew to a staff of 40 and began employing machinists to produce large quantities of Jute, New Zealand, Wool and Cotton Rugs. Today, Shires has a team of in-house designers and employs up to 400 people in their factory in China to keep up with demand. With complete control over the design, raw materials and manufacture, Shires can make quality products that are accessible to all horse riders. The company is also incredibly proud of its Royal Warrant, granted by HM The Queen in 2009 after supplying the Royal Stables for five years.

NEWS

Petplan Equine Top Five Every year Petplan Equine, one of the leading UK horse insurance providers publishes information on the top five conditions for insurance claims. The data from 2017 indicates that the number of claims for gastric ulcers is climbing year on year. Arthritis, which was at the top of the table in 2016, has maintained its position for another year, Laminitis, which was lying in fourth place in 2016, has seen a claims reduction of over 19% compared to 2016 and has fallen to number five in the ranking. This reflects the ever-growing awareness amongst horse owners and vets of the two hormonal diseases responsible for the majority of Laminitis cases, Cushing’s and Equine Metabolic Syndrome. As a result, these conditions are tested for more regularly and if present, preventative treatment and management changes are put in place to try and prevent the condition from occurring. Desmitis, which is when there is inflammation of the ligaments in the leg and is most common in competition horses, has seen a small increase in claims, meaning the condition has moved from fifth to fourth place. Gastric Ulcer claims saw the greatest change, with an increase in the number of claims to Petplan Equine of more than 28% year on year. This would suggest that increased awareness and knowledge amongst horse owners, as well as more accessible veterinary tests being available has contributed towards the increase of claims.

Laura Gordon & Ransom’s story

Laura Gordon and Ransom

Petplan Equine Ambassador Laura Gordon and her horse Ransom have been a partnership for over 17 years. In 2011 when Ransom was 13-years-old, he started to buck and display a shorter stride when being ridden, Laura knew something was wrong. It wasn’t long before Ransom was diagnosed with Arthritis. “Ransom had always had a very positive work ethic,” said Laura. “This behaviour was completely out of character so, at this point I knew something was wrong. Previously Ransom had damaged his Sacroiliac joint, when he was a four-year-old out in the field, but after initial treatment, had come back into work feeling well, so his erratic behaviour was very unlike him. After a few days off he developed a Sacroiliac swelling, and it was at this time we decided to get our vet involved. Ransom was unhappy having full flexion and extension tests performed on his left hind leg, and therefore needed to go for a full investigation at Liphook Equine Hospital.” The results after the x-rays, scans, and blocks revealed that Ransom had Arthropathy of the left hip; as well as other arthritic changes to his joints. After a lengthy discussion with her vet, Laura opted to medicate the hip and support this treatment with physiotherapy and joint supplements. Laura’s chiropractor had been treating Ransom since he was four and over the next five months, Ransom had regular veterinary and chiropractic treatment which also included H-wave therapy. He went from restricted box rest to long reining and finally gradual ridden work in walk and trot. Laura continued: “Ransom’s recovery was an emotional rollercoaster with a few steps forward, and multiple steps back, and we didn’t know if he would ever compete again. But the time finally came where we were able to enter our first dressage competition. From that moment, we have not looked back. Seven years on he is competing successfully at Prix St George; a level I never thought we would achieve, something only dreams are made of. Petplan Equine was fantastic from the moment I knew Ransom would be needing treatment. They were incredibly efficient with settling his claims, and covered everything from the diagnosis, treatment and complimentary therapy. Early detection of the arthritis has meant Ransom has had a happy and comfortable seven years – with the hope of many more to come.”

atie Forrest from Chiddingfold in Surrey won the Magnolia Cup (presented by Swarovski in support of Cancer Research UK) at the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Thursday 2nd August riding Hurricane Harry. The winner, who is trained near Chiddingfold by George Baker, tracked Harrodian Knight through the first few furlongs and then eased past before recording a comfortable success. The Ian Williamstrained Harrodian Knight, the mount of Sarah Cook who works on the Daily Mirror’s sports desk, took second ahead of the Camilla Swift-ridden Boots And Spurs from Scott Dixon’s stable. Katie’s win in a race which has raised more than £1.2m for charity since its inception eight years ago, was most appropriate, for her father, Tim, has been suffering from cancer and is undergoing treatment. Fortunately, he and his wife Susie were at Goodwood today to witness their daughter’s triumph. Talking after her win Katie said: “I can’t even put my feelings into words. I think it was Mick Fitzgerald who said winning [the Grand National] was better than sex, and it really is - it is the most insane feeling. I owe it all to George Baker and his team, who are the most fantastic group of people. I’ve gained a family in the last six months - oh my God, I’m going to cry! My dad has cancer, but this will be a big boost for him, and I’ve raised £10,000 to do this, so to win it as well is insane. I’ve got so many people to be grateful to, and the horse, Harry Hurricane literally carried me home - I didn’t have a clue what I was doing half the time. I begged to do this race in March, but the riders had already been selected. Then one dropped out in May and I got my chance to take part. Since then it has been a whirlwind to get ready for this, but it’s been worth it. I got a good start, but the Bakers drilled it into me, ‘Nail the start and you will be half way there. I sat behind a grey horse [Harrodian Knight] who pulled me along for two furlongs and apart from that it is a blur. I got to about a furlong out and thought ‘I don’t know where everyone else is, but I’m going to try and keep going’. By then my legs had gone and I was wobbling, but the horse kept going and is a legend. I’ve never done anything like this - just a bit of showjumping but everyone at the yard has given me great advice.”

r Corrine Austin looks after her horses using ‘best practice’ methods that are core to basic horse care/health. After years of carrying out worm egg counts to determine whether her horses needed worming for redworm or roundworm, and conducting expensive blood testing for tapeworm, she set out to find a way to test for tapeworm that is easy to carry out and not costly. As an experienced scientist she set up the Austin Davis Biologics laboratory and researched diagnostic methods to test for tapeworm. Out of this research, Corrine and her team discovered that you could detect tapeworm infections by measuring anti-tapeworm antibodies in saliva. The method proved to be very accurate and reliable, diagnosing all pathogenic tapeworm infections (validation published in Veterinary Clinical Pathology journal1). The test is similar to a blood test but uses saliva instead, which can easily be collected by horse owners and returned to the EquiSal laboratory in Northamptonshire for testing. Corrine’s own horses are routinely tested and since developing the test in 2013, they have only been given praziquantel (antitapeworm wormer) when EquiSal saliva testing has shown they are infected with tapeworm. Worms are becoming increasingly resistant to wormers as a result of the drugs being over used, or used routinely without proof that they are required. The best way to prevent worm resistance is to reduce the number of wormers your horse receives.

Impressive results

International show jumper, Tim Stockdale, has been very successful in reducing the number of wormers used on his yard. Prior to using EquiSal Tapeworm testing, the horses were receiving the recommended twice a year treatment for tapeworm. During the last four years they have conducted EquiSal Tapeworm testing, only eight horses have needed tapeworm treatment, meaning just eight doses of praziquantel have been used on Tim’s yard instead of 160 doses if they had continued with routine treatment. Tim said: “I take my horses’ welfare very seriously and this professional scientific approach to diagnosing worm burdens is the way forward.” The yard has a much lower risk of resistant tapeworm, so when a horse is confirmed as having an infection, Tim can be confident that the wormer will be effective.

Best practice worm control

Using the EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test, it is possible to repeat the test 2-3 months after worming to determine if treatment has been effective and whether an additional dose is required. This has been invaluable for Corrine, as after many years of having low diagnoses, one of her horses, Ama’s saliva score increased, indicating she had become infected with tapeworm. Ama received praziquantelbased wormer and her saliva score reduced over a period of several weeks. However, before reducing to ‘low’, her saliva score increased significantly suggesting reinfection. An additional praziquantel dose was administered and the saliva score reduced to below the treatment cut-off and remained so. If follow up testing not been conducted, Ama would have maintained the tapeworm infection until the next routine testing and the cycle would continue. Corrine is often asked about tapeworm control by horse owners, and a common theme after the first test is surprise that their horse has an infection, despite carrying out regular worming. In these cases, once or twice a year treatment has not been effective at maintaining a healthy balance and horses end up with constant infection, broken briefly by the worming dose, only to become reinfected at a later date. In these cases, it is important to know what you are dealing with and whether to target doses more often to break the tapeworm life cycle and therefore reduce the horse’s risk of reinfection. This strategy, together with good pasture management, can help to prevent constant infection and enable the horse owner to better manage tapeworm infections. The company’s vison for EquiSal Tapeworm is to provide the test to horse owners as cheaply as possible. To do this, the small family run company invested in robotic systems which have transformed the laboratory to a high throughput operation and keeps overhead costs to a minimum. The cost of the test includes a saliva collection kit, return postage of the sample and laboratory testing.

Continued research

Corrine’s team are also heavily involved with research into horse worm infections including tapeworm life cycle and diagnostic tests

Use of EquiSal Tapeworm saliva testing for best practice worm control straight from the horse’s mouth! for other important horse worms, including an encysted redworm test in collaboration with the Moredun Institute. Collaborator Professor Jacqui Matthews emphasises “Frequent (including unnecessary) drug use has been shown to speed wormer resistance, which decreases the effectiveness of the few chemicals that we have to treat serious worm burdens in horses. We must ensure that use of wormers is carefully considered and, preferably, administered after a positive diagnostic test.” EquiSal Tapeworm testing is easily incorporated into your horse’s worm control programme. Simply test every six months at a time when you would normally consider treating for tapeworm. Saliva collection kits are available from veterinary practices and SQPs. Words by Dr Judith Maxwell, Dodson & Horrell International Vet & Technical advisor Equine Cushing’s disease occurs when a tumour called a pituitary adenoma develops in the pituitary gland. As this tumour grows it sends inappropriate signals to the rest of the body to secrete excessive hormones, which can affect the horse’s body in a number of ways. Predominantly affecting older horses, here we take a look at the clinical signs of Cushing’s, how to treat it and what to feed the horse or pony suffering with Cushing’s.

C

ushing’s or (PPID) is a disease that affects horses all year round. Hormone levels peak during the time of year where the daylight becomes reduced, so testing of Cushing’s is most effective from autumn time to the end of the year. It is good practice to ask your vet to routinely test horses over the age of 16 for Cushing’s, especially if you are also seeing any of the following symptoms: 1. Laminitis or pain in the feet. 2. Hypertrichosis…. A very fancy word for a change in the hair on your horse’s body. 3. Abnormal fat pockets these form over the tops of the horse’s eyes, you can see these bulging fat pads sticking out. 4. Sweaty Betty normally this will not be noticed until you really look at the skin and see the salt crystals dried on there. 5. Increased Drinking and peeing Not many of us will recognise that our horses are drinking excessively as they are normally out in fields with automatic drinkers, however, when they do come in; in the autumn, this is when we can begin to notice that there is a wetter than normal bed, or that you are getting through more bedding.

6. Poor performance or generally they have lost their sparkle. Some riders are much more aware of this than others; as horses, just like people can have variable energy levels. 7. Infections that they can’t seem to shift.

Testing

Testing for Cushing’s is by process of a simple blood test taken by your vet, the results of which are normally received a few days later. Depending on the result it will then be time to decide if you need to start treatment or not. Sometimes you are in the grey zone, and it may be worthwhile waiting and seeing what the result is like in six months’ time, rather than jumping straight in with treating.

Treatment

Thankfully there is treatment available for this disease, it is called Pergolide or its trade name is Prascend. Most horses will eat the small tablet in their feed, or sometime if they are picky you might have to resort to a treat. Once treatment has started you should ask your vet to retest in about 4-6 weeks. Once the dose is settled and the hormones have come down, you should start to see a big improvement in all the symptoms mentioned above.

Feeding

Dodson & Horrell’s Cushcare Conditioning feed has been designed to support your horse through their older years. It is high in oil with good quality protein to assist the horse in gaining weight and as much muscle and topline as possible too. With the view that the disease is under control with pharmaceutical intervention, Dodson & Horrell help support the horse’s specific nutritional requirements with this feed. Most horses with Cushing’s have a characteristic

pot-belly, poor topline, diminishing muscle quality and poor skin/coat condition. They suffer more from infections, such as dental, hoof and eye infections, as their immune systems is not as strong. Cushcare is a crumble of delicious conditioning feed, specifically produced in this way to allow older horses with missing teeth or limited chewing action to get the best out of their feed. It can be fed dry or soaked into a mash or slurry. Various herbs and supplements are included in Cushcare Condition, including cinnamon and chaste tree berries which are believed to be beneficial in supporting older horses. There are also added antioxidants to help with the increased oxidative stresses that Cushing’s disease places on the horse; ingredients such as QLC (Quality for Life Care antioxidant package), and great quality anti-oxidants in the form of vitamin A, D and K, and Vitamin C will help to keep the status quo. Older horses generally will also need some assistance with their joints, so Glucosamine has been added to aid the joint integrity and to keep mobility; the Cushing’s horse generally has an increased incidence of osteoarthritis. Plus, optimal levels of biotin are included to assist with good quality hoof growth. Finally, Actisaf yeast and prebiotics promote a healthy digestive system and the normal function of the hindgut. Further information on the disease can be found at https://www.talkaboutlaminitis. co.uk/ and if you have any queries regarding your own horse contact your vet. Best Practice Update:

Positive progress as specials manufacturer steps up to produce single chemical tapeworm option for use under the cascade system

E

arlier this summer horse health experts raised concerns over the implications of tapeworm treatment options following the news that Equitape is to be withdrawn from sale in October 2018. In a turn of fortune for horse health, a specials manufacturer dedicated to the veterinary industry has stepped up to fill this gap. A new praziquantel-only equine product will be available to vets from August 2018. Consultant vet to Westgate Labs, Carolyn Cummins MVB PhD MRCVS commented: “Retaining a species-targeted treatment option is a fantastic outcome for sustainable worming practice and will go a long way in helping us to tackle the major welfare threat of wormer resistance. Evidence based control combining regular testing and targeted treatment is the best chance we have of protecting our horses from endemic disease caused by parasite infection both now and in the future.”

Horse Worm Treatment Prescribing Options with the availability of a praziquantel-only worming product Where it has been confirmed that treatment for tapeworm is needed following a positive tapeworm test then the approach to other parasites (most usually redworm and roundworm) should also be considered by conducting a worm egg count. If treatment for just tapeworm is indicated then a praziquantel only wormer would be one of the preferred choices of your vet. Alternatively, a double dose of pyrantel can be recommended for administration if; • ascarids are also present (more likely in foals or yearlings) or • the redworm population in question is known to not be resistant to pyrantel. Where treatment for redworm is indicated at the same time as tapeworm treatment, then an ivermectin + praziquantel combination wormer would be the recommended selection through spring, summer and autumn. In winter when a proactive treatment for the possibility of encysted redworm is advised then a moxidectin + praziquantel would be preferred treatment or alternatively a praziquantel only wormer followed two weeks later by a moxidectin only wormer or 5-day fenbendazole where there is no resistance known.

Evidence based control Regular testing should form the centre of any programme to determine whether or not a worming treatment is required to keep drug exposure to a minimum. Worm egg counts should be conducted every two to three months (with frequency depending on risk) and tapeworm tests performed every six months to monitor infection levels in healthy adult horses. Lester & Matthews (2013) identified that: “Faecal egg counts can

be used to identify the likely 15-20% of horses that need worming to reduce worm egg shedding and can reduce wormer use by up to 82%”. EquiSal Tapeworm test data shows that fewer than 27% of horses tested require treatment for tapeworm (Austin Davis Biologics) and Lightbody et al (2017) demonstrated that using EquiSal Tapeworm in a targeted worm control programme reduced the use of tapeworm wormers by 86%. armth is a priority with winter clothing, but this doesn’t have to mean wearing thick bulky layers in an attempt to keep cosy. With the enormous advances in fabric technology, it’s no longer necessary to pile on dense layers, which will not only slow you down, but make riding (or even mounting your horse) cumbersome. choose the wrong clothing, and when you do exercise and perspire, the fabric won’t wick away the moisture, and you will end up feeling even colder as you cool down. For the perfect transition to autumn, the Equetech Kingsley Gilet is styled in wind resistant shell with a water-repellent finish and features a cosy oversized pillow collar to help keep your neck and face protected from the elements. For really cold weather the Rowant Quilted Coat with its longer length and detachable faux fur hood is ideal for teaching, yard duties, and when you need to ride, there’s a long functional zip to the back so you can unzip the jacket and feel warm when you ride too. this season, technical clothing is the buzz term for keeping warm. our Winter Riding Tights will be a wardrobe staple for many riders this year, styled in a technical pro-stretch knit they have a toasty brushed fleece lining. they are easy to slip on and feature silicone grip knee patches for security in the saddle. this time of year, it’s hard to predict from day to day, let alone hour to hour, what the temperature will be doing and the Equetech Trilogy Jacket, with its removable inner coat makes an excellent choice for riders on a budget or those who want a warm winter coat that stands up to the variable weather conditions. the Apollo Quilted Soft-Shell Jacket is also ideal for wearing now and throughout the season ahead. Wear it as an extra layer under your heavier winter jacket when the really cold weather arrives or team with a base layer for wearing now and in the spring next year. It is sporty and stylish, and insulated with our exclusive micro-Down filling. the equetech range of headbands also add a touch of glamour and warmth for when you are doing all those yard duties and are the perfect cover up for helmet hair too. We even do a riding hat thermal liner, which will keep your lower face and ears and neck warm, ideal for winter hacking. our cosy FoxHunter Shirt is aimed at those riders who hate the cold. styled in a luxurious, soft cotton interlock fabric to keep the warmth in and the cold out. Introducing the DC Morgan: a bitting innovation

Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

I

t is great to see that manufacturers of bits are working towards reducing mouth pressure for the horse or pony, and making the riding experience more comfortable for the equine.

Bombers Bits is a good example, with the South African manufacturer having launched a range of brand new bits under the banner of ‘DC Morgan’. DC Morgan refers to the innovative cheekpiece, which was designed to remove as many pressure points as possible, creating a safer, more comfortable communication between horse and rider. The key feature of the cheekpiece is the loose ring, which attaches to the bridle (which can also rotate), ensuring that the poll and cheek area is relieved from any rein engagement. The reins are attached to a large ‘dee’, which swings open independently of the cheekpiece. The mouthpiece is fixed to the cheekpiece, with a solid surface area to encourage flexion. Bombers’ philosophy on bitting is based on the premise that Pressure = Resistance, and Resistance = Lack of Control. It’s simple but true. The DC Morgan is available in its country of manufacture, South Africa, with many mouthpieces, not just ported; although here at SB Bits, we recommend the DC Morgan with a ported Bombers mouthpiece, in the two styles (detailed below). The reason behind this is that (with the right port), the horse experiences maximum tongue relief; so a ported DC Morgan is probably the ultimate bit, for reducing mouth pressure. The majority of pressure from a bit should be spread over the bars of the mouth, and a good fit is essential to limit any sideways movement, so the horse’s tongue can benefit from the port. The swivel element of the DC Morgan bits allows the mouthpiece to naturally adjust with the horse’s movements, maintaining a comfortable position in the equine’s mouth.

Bits exert pressure on some or all of the following internal parts of the horse’s mouth: the bars (the ‘gummy’ sections between the incisor and molar teeth); the roof of the mouth (palate); the tongue, particularly the sensitive edges - and the lips and corners of the mouth.

There are two DC Morgan bits from the range that I especially like:

DC Morgan Happy Tongue

DC Morgan Bomber Blue

The Bomber Blue again has a ported mouthpiece for improved tongue relief. However, instead of being metal, the material used, a strong, rubber-nylon compound, allows the bit to remain light in the mouth. The outer material promotes salivation and as a result potentially gives the horse a softer mouth. The Bomber Blue material is moulded around a stainless steel core so it is very strong. This bit is ideal for horses with sensitive tongues, those that are prone to headshaking, or horses that are sensitive to metal bits. Please note both bits are not British Dressage-legal. Cakeham Stables’ Showing Show West Wittering, West Sussex Saturday 4th August 2018 Words by Sally Gee and photos by Luke R Gee of LRG Photography

akeham Stables is set in the most fabulous position in a quiet spot adjacent to West Wittering beach, with great backdrops of the sea on one side and Cakeham Castle on the other. It has a timeless quality with an unhurried and relaxed feeling even on a show day. This showing show was organised by Shannon Flower for the liveries, students and friends of Cakeham Stables, with in-hand showing in the morning and ridden in the afternoon, all judged by Alison Parsons. The show got underway with a first place in Child Handler for Lily Cox and Glenmuir Myrtle a seven-year-old pony who came off the Highlands at the beginning of May. This was the pony’s first show and although both pony and handler are inexperienced they looked after each other very well to take the red rosette in a strong class. Nicola Johnson and 29-year-old Whiskey took top spot in the Veteran class, with Whiskey impressing us all with his youthful looks and movement. Whiskey is apparently still full of spirit and loves a canter on the beach. Isabel Oliver and Bumble headed the In-hand Championship and went on to win the Ridden Mountain & Moorland class later in the

afternoon. Isabel and Brumble are also regular competitors in the show jumping at Coombelands Equestrian where they have had some good results, showing how versatile this pair are becoming. New Combination, Hannah Snelling and the very polite Coombestone Rise performed a lovely individual display to win the Ridden Novice class against some good competition. This is the family’s first horse, and definitely a pairing to look out for in the future! Another new pairing, who looked good in the ring was Kia Clarke and Evie. The combination won the In-hand Mountain & Moorland class and had some good placings in the ridden classes. Kia has only had Evie a couple of weeks, but already it is evident a good bond is becoming established. Grace Cutting and Endless Dream (Winnie) produced a lovely show to take top honours in the Best Rider class. Taught at the stables by Deborah Basley for twelve years since she was four, Grace certainly rides beautifully and the gets the best from Winnie. The show concluded with the Ridden Championship, which went to Isla Cross and Owen, who had earlier taken top spot in the Lead Rein class.

FEED NEWS

Feeding the Veteran

T

here are many factors to consider when feeding a veteran horse or pony, for example his activity level, the environmental conditions, and certain health issues including: 1 Reduced dental function: Over time the grinding surface of the teeth wear down and horses and ponies may suffer from fractured or missing teeth, diastema (gaps between the teeth) and periodontal disease. A six-monthly visit from a qualified Equine Dental Technician or vet is essential. However, hay replacers will inevitably become necessary. 2 Musculoskeletal problems: A culmination of wear and tear can result in problems such as arthritis. Reduced activity, muscle wastage and stiffness can be seen as a result. Regular, gentle exercise and plenty of turnout can help. Supplementation with the scientifically recommended level of glucosamine (10g/500kg horse/day), as well as MSM, can also be beneficial. 3 Hormonal disease: Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (Cushing’s) is a common hormonal disorder of veteran horses and ponies. Insulin dysregulation is often associated with PPID and increases the risk of laminitis. Therefore, total diets should be low (<10 - 12%) in NonStructural Carbohydrates (NSC) i.e. sugar and starch. Muscle breakdown can also develop as PPID progresses, so high quality protein is essential. 4 Respiratory disease: Veteran horses and ponies may suffer from respiratory issues, such as Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO). The key to management is reducing exposure to dust. Turnout should be maintained as much as possible and steamed or soaked hay, or haylage, used when necessary.

5 Immune system compromise: Age, as well as PPID, can affect immune function. To provide nutritional support for the immune system, diets should contain optimum levels of certain micronutrients particularly antioxidants such as vitamin A, E and selenium. Mannan Oligosaccharides (MOS) have also been found to be beneficial, whilst vitamin C has a role to play in lung health.

Diet recommendations: Forage Forage is the foundation of any horse or pony’s diet and veterans are no exception. A constant supply of fibre is essential to maintain a healthy digestive system, with optimal gut motility and balanced hindgut microflora. As dental function declines, it becomes increasingly important to provide fibre sources in a pre-ground form. Haylage can be easier for a veteran to manage, when compared to a mature, coarse hay. Straw-based chops should be avoided but soft, short chopped grass can be used as a hay/haylage replacer for a period of time. However, fibre in a pre-ground form rapidly becomes essential. A mash that is high in fibre, soaked fibre cubes and alfalfa/grass cubes, plus, to a lesser extent, unmolassed sugar beet pulp are all possible alternatives to long fibre.

Hard Feeds • Healthy veteran in good condition: Horses and ponies that can maintain their level of work, without any significant health concerns, may be able to continue on their previous diet providing it is fully-balanced. The addition of a supplement including glucosamine and MSM may be sensible at this stage. Alternatively, there are top specification feed balancers available that include the recommended level of

glucosamine and provide a very economical solution. • Overweight veteran: With age, workload will usually reduce eventually leading to retirement. This means that if they remain healthy, certain older horses and ponies can be prone to weight gain. Feeding a top specification ‘lite’ feed balancer or multi-supplement is ideal. The best contain both general purpose and specialised supplements, including those for hooves, bone, muscle, blood, joints, the immune-system and the digestive tract. • Underweight veteran: As health issues develop, many veterans are likely to experience weight loss. Hard feeds should be nutrient-dense and not exceed the horse’s maximum meal size e.g. 2kg (dry weight) for a 500kg horse. A top specification, conditioning feed balancer will supply amino acids, vitamins, minerals and yeast products, which improve the utilisation of the rest of the diet. Most top specification, conditioning feed balancers contain high quality protein sources. Protein promotes muscle development and topline, which frequently wastes away in older horses. In view of the fact that older horses are gradually able to eat less fibre, and therefore may suffer from disturbances in the hindgut microbial balance, cereal-based products that are high in sugar and starch should be avoided. Adding a low starch, conditioning blend to a top specification feed balancer will provide a very successful solution for a veteran horse or pony. This high protein, high calorie feed, can be fed during the autumn months as a way of preventing loss of condition over the winter period. www.dodsonandhorrell.com

NAF In the Pink Senior In the Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and pony. Designed to give them all the support they need to stay active and feeling forever young. In the Pink Senior contains pre and probiotics to encourage a healthy and stable gut environment, this is particularly important in older horses and ponies, enabling them to maximise the value of their feed intake. In the Pink Senior also contains specifically selected herbs known for their anti-aging properties which supports a bright, active mind. It supplies essential, high quality, vitamins, minerals and micronutrients, which occurs at optimal levels for the older horse or pony. In the Pink Senior also contains glucosamine and MSM to provide basic joint support with a combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system. It is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not, providing complete value added condition with a youthful spark.

NAF Five Star Laminaze is formulated for horses and ponies on restricted grass intake requiring additional support. Laminaze is a unique synergistic blend of natural ingredients working together to offer key gut support and maintain hoof health, improving their diet for health. Prebiotics and live probiotics are included for their ability to support a stable, gut microbiome. Bio-available sulphur (MSM) and targeted nutrients are added for healthy hoof growth and strong sulphur bonds within the laminae. Naturally sourced antioxidants are also present supporting the liver to maintain optimal general health. Laminaze contains all the key nutrients for targeted dietary support, especially around the time of year when autumn flushes of grass occur. www.naf-equine/uk

Lamigard TRT Lamigard TRT is a highly effective supplement for horses and ponies and can be used at high levels in the short term, and at a maintenance level for long term health. Mollichaff HoofKind Complete

â–ź

Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is made from a balanced blend of high quality oat straw, dried alfalfa and fibre pellets and is topped with a light dressing of soya oil with added vitamins and minerals, trace elements, including magnesium and natural plant-based antioxidants, as well as added biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals. It provides a low level but high quality protein and restricted calories and so provides limited, controlled energy from high quality digestible fibre and oilbased ingredients, making it an excellent feed for good doers as well as those prone to laminitis.

TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted multi-supplement designed to provide nutritional support for those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. AntiLam is used and recommended by nutritionists, vets and farriers. Most overweight ponies, and some overweight horses, are susceptible to laminitis, as are horses and ponies diagnosed with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), Insulin Dysregulation (ID) and/or Cushings (PPID). AntiLam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high fibre, very low-calorie carrier to make it palatable. Long term trials at Middle Park Laminitis Research Unit showed that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed AntiLam. It can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. This unique multi-supplement is so palatable that it can be fed out of the hand to horses and ponies at pasture to provide vital nutritional support.

Other Feed News Rowen Barbary Solution Mash Cereal free and molasses free, with just 0.9% sugar Solution Mash is ideal for feeding to horses and ponies prone to laminitis who require more than fibre alone to maintain condition. With 150gm of oil in every 1kg, backed up by key antioxidants, this is designed to help promote excellent overall condition, encouraging weight gain and an improvement in top line. The high fibre levels help encourage better digestion within the hindgut, being particularly valuable for horses that require a diet that is sympathetic on the digestive system. Yeasacc 2016 is also added for improved fibre and mineral digestion and gut health. Natural herbs spearmint, garlic and fenugreek are also added along with optimum vitamins and minerals to help support overall health and vitality. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Dodson & Horrell Classic Fibre Cubes Dodson & Horrell’s Classic Fibre Cubes are an ideal supplementary feed for all horses and ponies. They are fully balanced and will provide a horse with all the vitamins and minerals they require. A good addition when pasture is generally lacking in some essential minerals and vitamins. Classic Fibre Cubes are a great source of fibre and include digestible fibre sources such as wheatfeed, oatfeed, soya hulls and unmolassed beet pulp, commonly referred to as “super-fibres”. Super fibres are more digestible than traditional fibre sources and are ideal to provide additional fibre when forage intake may be reduced, especially during winter. www.dodsonandhorrell.com

British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet A super-fibre conditioning feed, FibreBeet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product, with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. Fibre-Beet has been carefully designed to help keep the digestive system healthy with a blend of fibre sources that provide gut fill and are easily digested when compared to forage fibre. Fibre-Beet can improve energy intake whilst keeping dietary fibre levels at an optimum providing slow release energy without ‘fizz’. Suitable for all horses when fed appropriately, including those prone to digestive upsets and fussy eaters, Fibre-Beet has added biotin for hoof quality and is an ideal fibre source for horse and ponies prone to laminitis. Fibre-Beet also provides a good range of minerals, trace elements and amino acids and it has a low sugar content. It can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance) when turnout is limited. Soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water – ideal for adding extra warmth in winter. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

NAF Five Star Superflex Senior Five Star Superflex Senior is a unique formulation supporting healthy joint flexibility, specifically designed for older horses and ponies still leading active lives. This product is also suitable to provide added support for horses and ponies performing at high and demanding levels. Superflex Senior uses a powerful synergistic blend of naturally sourced antioxidant rich ingredients and optimal levels of readily absorbed Glucosamine, Chondroitin and the highest quality MSM to support the health of the cartilage, thick synovial fluid that oils the joint, tendons and ligaments. www.naf-equine/uk

Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer This summer our paddocks went rapidly from lush to desert and are now turning green again but, while the lack of grass prompted the need for additional forage, in the form of hay or haylage, whether parched or lush, pasture cannot be relied on to supply sufficient supporting nutrition. Baileys’ own extensive forage and pasture analyses show that grass is often deficient in nutrients, especially protein and certain minerals, yet many rely on it as their horse’s only nutrient source through the summer months. Baileys Lo-Cal balancer is specially formulated to supply those nutrients often lacking in grass and forage, without additional calories. This makes it ideal for good-doers, as they can benefit from a balanced diet, while grass intake can be controlled if the waistline needs watching. It contains quality protein, which is important for muscle tone and build, as well as healthy hair, skin and hoof growth. The full spectrum of vitamins and minerals include biotin and antioxidants and its combination of Yea-Sacc and Digest Plus support a healthy digestive system. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

Equerry Cool Mash New Equerry Cool Mash is an efficient quicksoaking mash for horses that need a low energy feed. Designed for horses and ponies in light to medium work Equerry Cool Mash is cereal-grainfree. It has low levels of starch and benefits from a ‘Non-Heating’ formula. Equerry Cool Mash contains highly digestible fibre sources including sugar beet, to benefit your horse or pony. The mash also includes yeast to support a healthy digestive system and added vitamins and minerals including magnesium. www.equerryhorsefeeds.com

BEDMAX Shavings BEDMAX is made specifically for bedding stabled horses. It is easy-to-use, contains no preservatives and benefits from the antiseptic properties associated with pine. Jeneen Schive proved anything is possible with the right attitude and a great horse, when she won the Mature Riders Championship at the National Side Saddle Show. What is most amazing is Jeneen, who classes herself as a ‘happy hacker’ only started riding her daughter Morgan’s horse, Night Watchman aka Smurf two weeks before the show. Regular readers will be more used to seeing Morgan and Night Watchman in the pages of Localrider, even making the cover back in July 2015. Twenty-three-year-old Morgan is a BHS AI and Side Saddle A instructor and works full time coaching riders and riding horses. Morgan said: “It all started back in February, after I gave my mum the challenge to compete at the National Side Saddle Show in the Mature Ladies Riding class on my horse, Smurf. We have owned Smurf for 10 years now and he is our pride and joy, taking me from Junior Side Saddle Rider of the Year to Open Adult Rider of the Year back in 2014. Now this might not sound a big challenge to some, but to someone who had never sat on a side saddle in her life or set foot in even a showing ring in her life, it was a huge ask.” The challenging extremes in weather, the wet spring followed by a heat wave, combined with ‘life getting in the way’, meant that two weeks before the show Jeneen still hadn’t ridden side saddle. In the end Jeneen said: “If I don’t start today, I am not doing it.” Morgan continued: “So she ended up having a bit of a crash course in side saddle and showing in those two weeks. The first few sessions were hard for her, as side saddle requires you to use very different muscles to those you use to riding astride. We had to stop every half a lap of the school to rest her cramping right leg! However, the closer we were to the Nationals, the quicker my mum was improving. Stamina was building in her posture and she was able to comfortably maintain good posture in the trot for quite a few laps in the school. Our aim was to go there and maybe get a placing in the top six, which we thought was still a little bit like wishful thinking as she would be up against some fantastic riders who have been doing it for many years.” Morgan could barely watch as her mother and Smurf entered the ring. She had little to worry about, adding: “Smurf was a complete gentleman and my FREE TICKETS! To the Hickstead RIHS mum remembered all the little things I’d told her and had clearly absorbed more than I thought after all these years of watching me! LOCAL RIDERS When the judge pointed to her as number one, we both cried SHINE AT THE Heathfield tears of joy. If that wasn’t surreal enough she was then through Show to the Mature Riders Championship, where she was now up against the top two riders from the three sections of the class. To Surrey our absolute amazement the judge once again pulled her in as County number one which made her Overall Champion of the class. I still Show 7 PAGE REPORT don’t think she has quite woken up from the dream as of yet. Bridie’s I’m just so proud with how she pushed herself beyond many 30th Birthday Bash of her comfort zones, to now have an achievement that will stay PLUS lots more summer with her forever. At the age of 52 if my mum can do it, then show reports inside! COVERING KENT, SUSSEX, SURREY, HAMPSHIRE, BERKSHIRE & THE ISLE of WIGHT anyone can!” Above: Morgan and If you would like to feature as Reader of The Month, please Night Watchman on the contact Fiona on 01892 863062 or email: fiona@localrider.co.uk cover of Localrider July 2015 • VOLUME XV NUMBER 6
