think this is my favourite time of year, the outdoor season has started, the sun is shining and there is a buzz in the air about Badminton. This year 31 local riders are heading to the Grassroots Championships and we have been able to feature most of them in our Badminton Preview starting on page 34. We also talked with Human Performance Coach and coach This is me on Frank to the Australian equestrian team, Jon Pitts. Jon works (twitter followers will know him as behind the scenes with many of the world’s top athletes and #supergingerninja). he shared some good advice to help the riders heading to He is kindly loaned Badminton prepare so that they can stay focused on their to me by Kate Lukas performance in all three phases of the competition. As editor and Hannah Scott of LMEQ for the Jon Pitts I remain unbiased at competitions, but after working with Fit to Ride Clinics. her for so many years I have to say a special mention to our regular columnist Laura Powell, of whom we are all very proud and wish the best of luck at the Badminton Championships. After Badminton the outdoor season always seems to be in full swing and it is only a few weeks later that the big County shows get under way. Whether you compete at village shows or on the national circuit, turnout is everything and we have a couple of features this month to help you achieve the winning look. Turn to page 56 to see some of our favourite products to help you Sparkle in the Ring. And if you are looking to add that finishing touch to your riding outfit this season, then turn to page 58, for our guide to What to Wear in the Ring. Have you always wondered what it might be like to ride Side Saddle? With the help of Belinda Wilkins and Sara-Louise Wood, Emma Haines decided to find out for herself and reading her feature on page 50 it sounds quite easy to get started. If you do have a go at side saddle or try something new with your horse this summer then email fiona@localrider.co.uk I love hearing your stories.

Oli’s Diary – due to study commitments (which includes field trips to the remote Isles of Scotland), and lack of equestrian adventures there is not an Oli’s Diary this month. The good news is that he has managed to take Sox to Poplar for his first run out and despite Sox being mildly insulted by the size of fence, he was impeccably behaved. Congratulations, we understand, are due to Oli and his Cambridge team on their, hopefully now, undisputed narrow win over Oxford. (Oli celebrated by holding an exploding bottle of fizzy wine!) Oli has a busy competition schedule, plus young rider’s training days planned and we look forward to receiving further news.

Guy Williams joins Team HAYGAIN HAYGAIN hay steamers are a range of scientifically-proven hay steamers that produce palatable, dust-free hay, helping maintain a healthy respiratory system to enhance performance. Talking of joining the team Guy said: “HAYGAIN has proved revolutionary to my top horses feeding habits and condition. My European horse for example struggles to keep in condition over the winter months but HAYGAIN is encouraging him to eat more forage and keeps him healthy and bright. This is one of the top accessories on my yard and now something I cannot live without!”

Remarkable recovery for Miners Frolic It was hit-and-miss last year as to whether Miners Frolic would recover from severe complications following an insect bite, let alone qualify for the 2012 Olympics! Miners Frolic, more commonly known as Henry, was withdrawn before the dressage at Badminton 2011 due to a lump that appeared on his withers as a result of an insect bite. The months that followed saw Henry fighting to survive, after he reacted badly to antibiotics being used to treat the infection caused by the insect bite. He suffered from colitis, poisoning of the gut, and was at risk of developing chronic laminitis. Henry fought and pulled through, and was fed Blue Chip Pro throughout his recovery. Pro contains generous levels of an EU approved probiotic, alongside MOS prebiotic, which aid gut health and fibre digestion. Kristina says: “I have been feeding Henry Blue Chip Pro and I believe it has helped his recovery. His gut is now healthy, and he is in amazing condition.” Henry is now back in full work and fighting fit, proving he deserves a place on the 2012 team when he finished third at Ballindenisk (Ireland) in the International Advanced*** section. The Blue Chip team would like to congratulate Tina and Henry, and wish them every success in being selected for the 2012 Olympics.

NEWS Ant and Dec Official Patrons of the Ascot Colts & Fillies Club!

A

nt and Dec, two of the biggest names in TV and presenters of the hit shows I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, Saturday Night Takeaway and Britain’s Got Talent, have become the first patrons of the Colts & Fillies Club at Ascot Racecourse. The Colts & Fillies Club, which currently has over 14,000 members and celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year, aims to bring horseracing to the next generation of racing enthusiasts by making the sport more accessible, educational and fun. The Club is free to join for all children aged 16 and under and five dedicated family days form an integral part of the racing calendar at Ascot. There are specifically tailored activities for the Colts & Fillies Club members to take part in, including organised stable trips, competitions and various raceday initiatives. In 2012, the Club will own Yurituni, a racehorse trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, and the young members will be able to experience the thrill of racehorse ownership by visiting the horse throughout the year and following her performance on the track. Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, who met at the age of 13 on the set of the hit BBC children’s drama, Byker Grove, also have more than a passing interest in racing now that they own the horse, Primaeval, with a group of friends. In 2011, Primaeval ran three times at Ascot and it was here that they became aware of the Colts & Fillies Club. “We had a lot of fun with horseracing last year, it’s a great sport and a day at the races is really exciting. We’re thrilled to be involved in the Colts & Fillies Club as it offers children the opportunity to learn all about horses and racing whilst at the same time having a great deal of fun! I’m particularly keen to see how their horse runs during 2012,” said Dec. For more information about the Colts & Fillies club visit the Colts and Fillies section at: www.ascot.co.uk

TopSpec Win Nutritional Helpline of the Year Award for Sixth Year Running Six fabulous years of outstanding personalised customer service were recognised at the BETA Business Awards as TopSpec once again scooped the HAYGAIN Nutritional Helpline of the Year Award. One nominator said: “The advice I was given was very detailed, with suggestions for a feeding regime fully explained.” An incognito judge added: “The diet recommended was explained step by step, they also went through all the ingredients and I was given a time-frame for improvements.”

KM Elite Products are delighted to announce the launch of their new Flexi-Cool Combination Bandage. This innovative bandage offers maximum support and protection to the horse when being ridden. Half of the bandage which is put directly onto the horse’s leg is a supportive cooling liner which helps to reduce heat build up by wicking away moisture from the skin. It also has an important four way stretch eliminating any pressure areas on the leg. The second half of the bandage is an open weave stretch fabric which goes over the liner to offer additional cushioning and protection without bulking or irritation. The bandages are secured with double locking Velcro to ensure maximum safety. The clever design in these bandages means there is no need to use under pads yet offer the maximum support and protection for your horse. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

He looks like he has been around the block a few times, but this is all part of his charm! He has been at Pussycat Lodge for quite a while now and would love to have the chance of a permanent home. British Showjumping News Localrider Supports Club Showjumping

L

ocalrider are supporting the exciting new Club initiative which British Showjumping launched last year to give competitors jumping between 70cm – 1.00m the chance to compete for minimal cost. The Club Leagues for the South Eastern region will now be known as the Localrider British Showjumping South Eastern Leagues and will be posted on the British Showjumping website in addition to featuring in each issue of Localrider Magazine. Club membership provides plenty of perks and benefits whilst also being good on your pocket by offering an annual membership for both yourself and your horse/pony for just £30 with entry fees being capped at just £10. Club membership offers fantastic opportunities to any horse, pony and rider combination who have no registered results at National Amateur 90cm, British Novice, Stepping Stones, Pony British Novice or above over the past three years. So even though your horse or pony may have some winnings on his/her record, if you are a new rider it doesn’t stop you joining as a club member.

With the horse/rider combination being the key factor you can see how Club membership offers an exciting opportunity. The other big change is that there is no age limit on riders competing ponies so the days of someone having to register their pony as a horse once they were seventeen are long gone! Localrider’s Fiona Rafferty commented: “We are delighted to support our region’s Club Leagues and we look forward to seeing some of those rising through the leagues feature in forthcoming issues. Our alignment with British Showjumping has been both a long standing and successful one and I am extremely pleased to be continuing our relationship with this alignment” You may ask why you should consider joining up as a Club member? • For a start, you don’t have to worry about clocking up prize money and jumping out of affiliated classes before you’re ready to upgrade. • Your horse and pony’s full performance record will be posted on the British Showjumping website for you to visit at any time.

• In addition to collating and uploading your horse or pony’s full grading information online, Club members will be eligible for regional leagues and championships. • Club members are eligible for all training programmes, have access to a bi-monthly online Showjumping magazine and receive their own friendly easy-to-read handbook. • Members also have peace of mind in the knowledge that the £30m public liability insurance is included in their value-formoney Club membership fee. If you enjoy jumping 70cm and above why not find out more...

Jumping unaffiliated? Then why not try our Club Shows allow you to compete for League Points and not prize money. With membership only £30 per combination and entry fees capped at £10 this is an afforable way to jump affiliated. Hector BEFORE Molly Mouse BEFORE

Hector AFTER

Two neglected laminitic ponies helped by Blue Chip and the ISPCA. “Molly Mouse hobbled into the National Animal Centre on appalling overgrown hooves. This tiny little girl was left for many years enduring the agony of laminitis and deformed hooves. Our farrier and vet recommended a diet rich in biotin but low in calories to help Molly Mouse recover from her ordeal. Blue Chip Lamilight was fed along with hay and gradually her hooves returned to normal. Molly Mouse now lives with her foster mum who continues to feed her on Blue Chip Lami-light and is delighted with the condition of her hooves and her shiny glossy coat. Laminitis has become a distant memory for this little pony as she kicks up her heels and gallops across her paddock every day.” “Hector was taken into the care of the National Animal Centre as he was suffering from acute laminitis and neglected hooves. Allowed to roam over 40 acres of fertilised grass Hector became obese and developed laminitis.

Unfortunately Hector did not receive the veterinary attention he urgently needed, nor were his hooves trimmed by a farrier for almost two years. As a result this lovely little pony endured much pain and suffering and on arrival it was feared help had come too late for him. Hector however had other ideas. He was immediately examined by our equine vet and started on a course of pain relief and anti inflammatory medication. Of course we also gradually introduced him to Blue Chip Lamilight, which he loves! Less than two weeks later Hector was off medication and sound. Our vet was astonished by the difference in him and our farrier cannot believe how quickly Hector’s neglected hooves are improving. One month later and Hector has been transformed from a crippled overweight sad little pony into a lively, fun loving chap who causes no end of mischief.” Cathy Griffin, Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA)

Does a barefoot trim involve invasive hoof horn removal? By Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine, distributors of barefoot hoof boots

B

arefoot hoof care is becoming increasingly popular with horse owners keen to promote long term equine health. But what does a trim involve – is it the actual invasive removal, or just trimming, of excess hoof? Despite its name, hoof trimming rarely involves anything more than a small rasp – the equivalent to the filing of human finger nails. good barefoot practitioners agree that less is More; eg. only the hoof material that would wear away naturally, or needs to be removed to strengthen or prevent pathology, should be filed away. This means not taking away pieces of the foot for cosmetic reasons. This may go against what we have been taught to appreciate through photographs promoting hoof products that show perfectly symmetrical and manicured hooves. Filing away part of the hoof to make it match its pair is not a good idea – every horse is different and it is rare to find a horse with perfect conformation; so it follows that the hooves will not necessarily be a ‘perfect’ shape. Barefoot advocates tend to prefer listening to and learning from the individual horse, which to me, means letting the horse grow the hoof it needs. The barefoot trimmer is simply maintaining the feet (to make up for the lack of variety of wear, or any pathology such as stretching of the white line), to provide a hard-working hoof that stands up to ridden work. Trimming should be non-invasive, and most trimmers follow the ethos of not removing more than they need to. if the horse is being trimmed regularly enough, hoof nippers should never be needed; if they are, it can be a sign the trim interval is too long and should be reduced - we are aiming for only ever needing the rasp. By allowing excess growth, this can cause the hoof to slow its rate of growth, and even change the angle of growth to compensate. Meanwhile, only ever trimming tiny amounts promotes a strong, steady, even growth of horn. Bare horses where possible naturally wear this excess hoof away, while shod horses of course do not – hence there is no reason to actually ‘cut away’ or remove sections of bare hoof.

Hard working hooves

The trim for a working barefoot horse aims to produce the strongest, soundest hooves for ridden horses. This is slightly different to the ‘pasture trim’ that is often given to resting or retired horses by a farrier – so if you are engaging the services of a farrier for your barefoot horse, make sure he or she is encouraging a hoof shape that will help the ridden horse thrive. The natural trim that ‘trimmers’ perform ensures the foot is properly balanced for the whole horse, flare is addressed (in most cases), hoof wall is maintained around 1/16th above sole level, and the mustang roll is applied. The trimmer should want to see the horse move before and after a trim, to ensure the hooves work for a horse in motion. Barefoot practitioners should also discuss diet and environment at each visit, and discuss how the horse’s diet affects his foot health – after all, hoof health starts on the inside. april 2012 Localrider 19

Jump to it!

By George Gorman, inventor of the RS-tor rider safety aid

Many of us are preparing for the showjumping season, putting in the groundwork at home and planning our goals for 2012. With so many great rising establishments in the South East available for hire and training, as well as competition, we are certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to showjumping venues! Susi Rogers Hartley says if flatwork is ignored, problems on a jumping course inevitably occur To get you in the mood for this discipline, we asked two of our favourite jumping riders to share their training tips: Introduce stride adjustment: by para-show jumper, Susi Rogers Hartley

Kit Houghton

This exercise works on adapting rhythm within the different ‘gears’ (ie the horse’s length of stride) in canter - an essential skill when jumping. it is also very good for improving the rider, as it teaches them to sit still while they adjust the stride. For me, as a paraplegic rider, balance is everything. Canter is so important for showjumpers – i’d estimate that around 80% of a showjumping competition is performed on the flat! if flatwork is ignored, then problems on a jumping course will inevitably occur in one form or another, for example with run outs, the horse losing confidence, or even with falls. My top tip is to sit as still as you can and do

not change your seat pressure the whole way through the exercise. Keep the rhythm by counting to yourself. remember to breathe!

1

place three ground poles in the middle of the riding area, so you can work evenly on both reins. Work on four average horse strides (55ft/16.8m) between the poles.

2

Work on getting a nice canter before you start; without a good rhythm, real control and accuracy are impossible. rhythm is the foundation of the canter stride!

3

ride a straight line in canter through the three poles, with four strides of the same length, balance and rhythm. aim for four strides between the first and second pole, and four between the second and third pole. We will call this a ‘four:four’. now try a ‘five:five’ - five strides between the first and second pole, and five between the

second and third pole - shorten your horse through the poles.

4

now start mixing up the number of strides - ask for a ‘five:four’, then a ‘four:five’ – you are working on changing the length of stride while maintaining the rhythm. apply both legs to make the stride bigger and longer, while retaining the rhythm.

5

after riding the exercise in this way, you can put the work into context by tackling individual fences.

OK – so we may not all be ready to jump a puissance wall like Ben Maher! But principles such as rhythm and balance apply whatever the fence height

Top tips for showjumping riders, Michaela Huntington from Michaela says your mind is your Huntington, double most powerful tool Champion at the 2011 National Amateur Show Jumping Finals.

1

Concentrate when you are in the ring - your mind is your most powerful tool. Be forward thinking, think and do what you know can be successful. Get into the right mindset when you compete.

2 3

Develop your fitness – you need to be really agile and fit to compete in showjumping competitions, and you need to have the body balance to help your horse jump safely. To improve your horse’s fitness, put in the hours – this means dedicated schooling, flat work, pole work and jumping, interspersed with gentle hacks and roadwork to relax and reward your horse’s concentration.

4

Ride with an RS-tor safety aid, whether schooling or competing (you can use it in affiliated competitions). It attaches to the stirrup bars via a webbing harness and gives an arm’s length of security. Visit www.rstor.co.uk for info. No matter how ‘safe’ you think your horse is, there just isn’t a horse born that you can guarantee 100% - it all depends on the circumstances! april 2012 Localrider 23

“I just put my hand up!” Regular contributor Alex Kelly thought she would have a day out at the Ascot Blood Horse Sales. Having promised her father, that she really could come back with her money in her pocket, he was a little shocked to receive a phone call a few hours later to bring the lorry to collect Figaro Flyer. Over the coming months we shall be recording Figaro Flyer’s transformation from race horse to show horse. For now Alex shares her story with you.

Figaro Flyer straight after the Ascot Blood Horse Sales

21st February 2012 On leaving for Ascot Blood Horse Sales I promised my long suffering father that Mum and I “were just looking”. Jane Townshend, was coming with us and she promised she “was just looking too”. I could tell he wasn’t convinced. The day began with a coffee and a civilised bit of window-shopping, Jane had marked some mares she might be interested in. I was rather pleased I’d not seen anything that made me want to put my hand up and bid, I would keep my promise and prove to Dad I could be trusted not to buy at every sale I went to.

I spotted Lot 19 Years ago I was told to look for a horse with a calm out look and a kind eye when at an auction, and glancing down the line of stables was when I spotted Lot 19. As a wild card entry he wasn’t in the catalogue (I was so unserious about buying that I hadn’t picked up the late entries list) so I had no idea what he was. Jane had spotted him

too, and before I knew it had his rugs off for inspection. Lovely and four square I thought, massive front, deep bodied, plenty of heart room, excellent bone, clean limbs and a strong hind quarter. Jane, Mum and I walked round trying to find a fault and watched him trot-up even on the uneven camber of the tarmac, he was as sound as a pound. I couldn’t find a glaring fault, much to my disappointment! We pressed on to look at some other lots, honestly thinking no more about it. Jane told me “you’d be crazy to not have a bid on that horse”. “No” I said “I don’t need another project”, I looked to my Mother for back up. “No she doesn’t” she backed me up “let’s get a coffee”. We got a coffee and watched the lots in the pre-sale ring.

Let the bidding commence Lot 19’s attendants saw us leaning over the rail, “are you going to bid on Figgie?” they asked. “Sorry, I don’t need a project and Jane

was looking for a mare” I said resolutely, but thinking that is a very nice horse. “Mum” I asked “would you kill me?” She didn’t exactly say no, she just didn’t answer. By this time Jane had acquired a late entries list and we found out Figgie, was actually Figaro Flyer. From the brief description given, the bay was nine-years-old and was owned and trained by Paul Howling, with twelve wins on the flat under his belt, thirty three placing’s and total winnings of £75,791. “He’ll go for a fortune!” thinking that would end the madness. “No he won’t, they said he’s ready to do something else” Jane reassured (Mum was saying nothing) “bet the handicapper has caught up with him, first bid will get him”. Jane was right, first bid did get him and it was my bid. I dared not look Mum in the eye as I put my hand up and held my breath, before I new it the hammer was down. The rush of excitement you get from bidding soon past, within the second actually, I looked at mum, she looked at me, “Oops” I said, “I’ve bought a race horse”.

Oh dear… we’ve bought another horse Silence, more silence and then “what have you done!” was all Mum said for about twenty minutes, until the next coffee kicked in. Jane did a remarkable job of talking her round and before long she was on side. Well, i felt she was enough on side for me to brave calling my Dad and try to get my new purchase home! as the dutiful long suffering father that he is, he arrived with the lorry, a look of shock on his face and the one and only 6’ 3” rug in the yard. While waiting for the transport we spent some time getting to know the new acquisition, he seemed kind, a bit grumpy, but that issue was solved when Brightwells staff found us some hay for him. i was reassured he must be a nice

one as the stable lass came back to say good-bye and give him a polo! The drive home made me feel sixteen again and just like the time Dad picked me up from london Bridge station because i’d missed the last train home, we sat in a disappointed silence then too! Dad can never stay mad for long, so eventually he asked “what were you thinking?” “i wasn’t” “Clearly! What are you going to do with him?” “re-train him, there’s a class now you know”. “really?” We returned to silence.

his charms. For a race horse out of training he is remarkably calm and a very kind horse. Under advice we have let him down (he was still on the gallops in early February) and has spent his whole life at the peak of fitness. i plan to take the next few months how i would take it with any new horse and that’s slowly. While i have trained young horses and sat on the odd ex-race horse, this is the first time i’ve taken one on from scratch. Whether this is madness, well i know it’s madness really, i’m up for the challenge and i hope that next month i’ll be able to let you know how Figgie is getting along!

9th March 2012 its now three weeks on since Figgie came to live with us and we have completely fallen for

Spring Pasture Care: Tips and Recommendations from Suregrow Fertiliser

It’s that time of year again. Spring is just around the corner, summer coats are visible, but pastures are still looking the worse for winter wear and need some attention to bring them back into good condition. As grass is the most natural feed available for horses and ponies and certainly the cheapest, it makes sense to ensure your grazing is as good as possible, so we asked Suregrow Fertiliser for advice on how to restore paddocks at this time of year and manage them correctly over the coming months...

T

he good news is that restoring neglected pastures doesn’t always have to mean ploughing and re-seeding, which will make a big difference to the timescale before grazing by horses can sensibly resume. Although ploughing and re-seeding any badly damaged pasture will produce a good end result, new grass realistically takes a full season to establish a strong root system and top growth, so trying to use the pasture for grazing heavy animals, like horses or cattle, will cause significant damage to your new grass, leaving you no better off!

Soil type

The type of soil you have, even if it’s heavy like clay - doesn’t have to make the restoration any more difficult, as provided the root system is still healthy underneath the remaining grass, then it is possible to improve the remaining pasture significantly. We would suggest that as soon as weather conditions allow, applying the right kind of fertiliser will ensure that the grass has the nutrients it requires to start growing steadily and evenly, which will be a key step in restoring your pasture.

Out with the weeds

If there are weeds, you could consider spot spraying but topping, even this early in the season, will reduce the challenge to the grass from weed growth. Harrowing and rolling is normal spring maintenance for grassland; the harrow will aerate the surface of the sward by removing dead grasses and the roller will encourage the grass to tiller (spread sideways with new shoots) into bare areas. It will also help the grass sward to re-establish more quickly, as by cutting weeds before they flower and tidying any areas of rough grasses, the grass plants have more opportunity to grow well when the warmer spring weather arrives. Before topping however, dig out and burn all ragwort you find, along with any other poisonous weeds. If you need help to recognise which plants are poisonous, use the internet and do a bit of research.

For more information about Suregrow fertiliser and free advice on pasture management, contact the technical support line on 05601 126627 or visit www.suregrowuk.com.

Keep it safe

Check that the fertiliser you choose is safe to handle and spread without the use of agricultural-scale machinery, is easy to apply and that you don’t have to keep your horses off the paddocks during and after spreading. That said, your grass will recover and re-establish more quickly if you can keep the horses off it in the early stages of new spring growth. You may want to consider strip grazing, perhaps with electric fencing, and move the horses regularly to achieve this. Ongoing improvements to your pastures should be planned from now so that your horses have every opportunity to enjoy quality turnout time. Horses evolved to eat a natural forage diet and as feed prices continue to rise, it is essential to ensure your valuable grazing is kept in the best possible condition, because it also offers important psychological benefits to help manage ‘the happy athlete’.

Make the most of your

fertiliser specifically formulated for horse and pony grassland

grazing... Burghley winner Lenamore enjoys his Suregrow paddock

Make the right choice

When choosing your fertiliser, don’t use a formulation intended for high yielding agricultural pastures. Like any living organism, grass needs the correct balance of trace elements and minerals for strong, healthy growth and when used for horses and ponies, making the right choice of fertiliser can help ensure appropriately nutritious pasture. Using a formulation designed specifically for horse and pony paddocks, like Suregrow, with its slower release form of nutrients, will help to produce sustained, better quality grass growth over a longer period and to facilitate uptake of nutrients essential to equine wellbeing. The correct choice of fertiliser will also stimulate the development of strong, healthy roots in grasses, resulting in a denser sward that helps to suppress future weed growth and reduces any incidence of moss, which has become a problem in many areas over this winter. Cutting back overhanging and overgrown hedges is another effective way to help eliminate moss and checking the pH (acidity) of your soil, spreading lime if necessary, can also help, as moss tends to prefer a more acid soil, along with buttercups!

Spring cleaning! By Callum Blair BVMS MRCVS, Senior Veterinary Advisor, Virbac Animal Health

With spring approaching, many horse owners are starting to plan their worming programme for the forthcoming grazing season. More owners are looking to use Faecal Egg Counts (FEC) to reduce their dependence on wormers. Here we discuss why it is important not to forget about Tapeworm. Equine Tapeworms

There are three species of equine tapeworm: • Anoplocephala perfoliata • Anoplochephala magna • Anoplocephaloides mamillana Anoplocephala perfoliata The most common species, and the one mainly associated with health problems, is Anoplocephala perfoliata. These tapeworms tend to cluster around the narrow junction between the small and the large intestine (the ileo-caecal junction). This can result in blockages which prevent the passage of food through Tapeworms clustered around the intestines resulting in the ileo-caecal junction an impaction. Work carried out by Prof Chris Proudman at Liverpool Vet School demonstrated that this tapeworm was responsible for 80% of ileal impaction colic cases seen.

The Tapeworm Lifecycle

The tapeworm life cycle differs from most of the other equine parasites as it needs forage mites to act as an intermediate host in order to complete its lifecycle (see diagram). The tapeworm eggs are ingested by the forage mites where they develop to the infective stage. Horses become infected with the tapeworm larvae by ingesting these forage mites. Forage mites are present on pasture over the summer but also in hay, bedding and other feedstuffs over the winter. This means that horses can pick up infection from the stable environment, even if they are not grazing during the winter. With this in mind, it is important to target tapeworms in the spring, to ensure that early pasture contamination is kept to a minimum when horses are turned out to grass. A second specific treatment can then be given in the autumn at the end of the grazing season.

The Detection of Tapeworm Infections

Tapeworms are some of the most common equine parasites; in studies conducted in the UK and Ireland between 30% and 70% of horses had evidence of tapeworm infection. Often horses show no outward signs of tapeworm infection until the levels are extremely high, by which time they may have caused severe damage. Recurrent colic (even if it is very mild) can be an indication of tapeworm infection as they have been implicated in almost a quarter of cases of spasmodic colic. It is possible to detect tapeworms using a specialised FEC technique but this test is not readily available, is not very sensitive and does not provide any indication of the level of infection. A better option is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies produced by the horse against the main tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata. This can be used to investigate cases of colic or to determine whether a horse is at low or high risk for tapeworm and requires either one or two treatments a year respectively.

Tapeworm Treatment

Whichever treatment you use make sure you are weight aware. It can be tempting to try to make the weight of your horse fit in with what “one syringe of wormer will treat” (or “half a syringe” in the case of ponies) even though “a syringe” or “a tube” is not a standard size. There are some products that only contain enough to treat a horse weighing up to 575 kg whilst others, such as Equimax and Eraquell, can treat a 700 kg horse with a single syringe (or even 800 kg with Equimax and Eraquell Tabs). Using a single syringe can be a case of false economy as, in a recent survey of leisure horses, a high proportion measuring between 14.2 hh and 16 hh weighed more than most syringes are able to treat. Combination products containing ivermectin and praziquantel, such as Equimax, provide an ideal Spring treatment as they will treat both roundworms and tapeworms in a single dose, as well as any bots that may have persisted as a result of the mild weather in the late Autumn and early Winter. Alternatively a double dose of pyrantel will treat tapeworms and adult roundworms.

Conclusion

Whatever you plan to do this summer, make sure you don’t forget about tapeworm. Include a treatment for tapeworm this Spring and ensure you avoid the problems that can be associated with this elusive parasite.

Laura giving Spud a warm-up run before the start of the season

Laura Powell writes... Well the eventing season is finally here! I’ve been late in getting started this year and my first event is Munstead at the end of March, hopefully by then I shall be fully prepared. I’ve been cross country schooling three times now and both Alf and Spud are feeling on form. Alf is a lot calmer and really concentrating as well as letting me ride him. Spud is on fire! He has really benefited from hunting and at eight-years-old I think he may have grown up – at last!

insure both and saVe money

Schooling for a purpose

We went to LMEQ, Bonfleur and Coombelands, all very different venues with separate aims at each. The first I mainly ‘hopped and popped’ to get back into the swing of things nothing too demanding; just let the horses enjoy themselves without losing the discipline. At Bonfleur I really worked on getting the forward canter in between the fences and tried to ‘keep travelling’. This worked well as all the fences are round the edge of fields. Then at Coombelands we kept the canter, added more lines, turns and then jumped the big stuff as well! Now the plan is for some more show jumping and a session of dressage drilling in the grass arena before the event.

Be prepared

It’s been a good preparation month, dentist, jab, saddler and chiropractor all paid visits to make sure everyone’s feeling well and no one’s got any excuses! I’ve also had another lesson with Jon Pitts, all was going well until I demonstrated the problem I can sometimes have going from working to medium canter. Queue Alf lifted his back and humped with me whilst running-off up the school! Jon has given me some tips on how to slow him when this happens rather than cling on for dear life. I explained that I can normally avoid this happening, but it costs me marks in the dressage arena for being ‘modest’ so hopefully this is a step in the right direction now Jon knows what I’m up against! One outing I did bail out of was Munstead’s pre season combined training. Normally an excellent opportunity to dressage and jump on grass before the season starts. The weather forecast wasn’t great, so we waited until the morning to decide if we would go. With gale force winds and torrential rain we didn’t. I didn’t think those conditions would have ‘settled’ Alf to my benefit! Word has it that it was bottomless from the lorry park to the arenas.

Feral ponies

One Sunday I was required to watch my youngsters who are now two-years-old! The Kent and Surrey bloodhounds were meeting where they are turned out and the first line included cantering through the field next door to where they were. I was very nervous praying that they wouldn’t hop the fence (as they have done in the past) to join the field. They were absolutely fascinated – Whoopi especially, I think she is destined for the hunting field! They currently stand at just under 16hh and this time next year will be home to be broken – hopefully I’ll be able to catch them by then as currently they are completely feral!

How long have you had your horse? Four years What do you do with your horse? We compete in BE events and for the Surrey Union pony Club. Our aim last season was to qualify for the Badminton Championships, which i have never done before. The whole experience has been made extra special due to the fact that we nearly lost Bob to colic in March 2010 and we have achieved all of this after he underwent surgery and had seven foot of gut removed! What does your training programme involve? Training wise our main priority has been Bobby’s fitness. He has been hunted all season by both myself and my dad, which not only does he love, but it has helped considerably. This has been alongside regular trips to the gallops, again mainly with my dad, whilst i am at University. Of course, all of this could not have been achieved without the help of my dressage trainer Jenny Watson and jumping trainers Theresa White and Ernest Dillon. Jenny has known Bobby since he was a four-year-old, which was a great help when i first got him and has since played a large part in the fact that we didn’t score above 30 in the dressage phase last season. alongside all the training, Gill Maybury equine chiropractor has been a huge help and support for Bob’s wellbeing and it is through Simple systems that we have found a suitable diet for Bobby, post operation. in the run up to Badminton i have been coming home most weekends from University to keep our fitness up and so i can have regular lessons and to avoid ring rustiness! During my Easter holidays i will be competing at Munstead and Twesledown, which will be my last run before the Championships! What do you do? i am currently in my second year of studying Geography at loughborough University. The fact that i am away during term time has made everything slightly more difficult and i am very appreciative of all the hard work and effort both my parents are putting in to keep Bob’s fitness up and to both Theresa and Jenny who have been helping school Bob while i am away. The whole experience would have been impossible without mum and dad. Who will go to Badminton with you? My mum and dad, my brother and Jenny is coming to warm me up for my test!

Embryo Transfer Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM(StudMed) MRCVS of The Arundel Equine Hospital

E

mbryo transfer (ET) is gaining popularity rapidly in the sport horse world now. People are becoming more aware of the process. Due to the increased numbers of mares undergoing embryo transfer the techniques are improving all the time and for the same reason the costs are reducing making it more accessible to mare owners. Primarily ET is a way of obtaining a foal from a mare (donor mare – whose genetic material you want to use) that can remain in competition. It can be used in some situations where the donor mare has a fertility problem associated with her uterus that prevents an embryo implanting and being carried to term. Embryo transfer is also a way of obtaining more than one foal from a mare each year; sometimes we can take three or four embryos all from the same mare by different stallions in a single year. Scanning the Mare

Check for fertility

donor mare will be monitored daily or every other day by scanning the uterus and ovaries to access when the best time to inseminate or cover is going to be. At the same time the recipient mares are examined to get the best match with the donor mare. Once a decision has been made as to when insemination is going to be performed ovulation induction Embryo Rinsing filter agents such as ovuplant are given to the donor mare to guarantee she ovulates at the required time. The recipient mare that is closest to the donor mare in her cycle will be given the same injection approximately 24hours after the donor. Insemination will take place and the following day the donor mare will be examined to check she has ovulated and that there are no problems with her uterus after insemination. Once the date of ovulation has been identified the date of the embryo flush can be scheduled, this usually takes place seven or eight days after ovulation, depending on the time of year and whether or not frozen semen was used.

Under the microscope

The actual flushing procedure involves placing a catheter into the uterus and then washing the uterus with between two and six litres of sterile flushing medium. The fluid is then harvested through a very fine filter that collects any embryo present in the fluid that has been flushed through the uterus. The contents of the filter are poured into a Petri dish and the embryo is searched for under a microscope. Once the embryo has been found it is washed by passing it through several droplets of holding medium. The embryo is then loaded into a straw, similar to the straws that frozen semen comes in. The chosen recipient mare is prepared and the straw containing the embryo is emptied into the body of her uterus. This is a very brief summary of what happens, there is a lot of fine detail that must be paid attention to particularly the hygienic methods of working and accuracy of the techniques used, small details make a huge difference to the outcome of an ET program. Once the transfer has been done the recipient mare will be scanned in a weeks time to see if she has held the embryo, the pregnancy will be monitored to check all is well up to 42 days of age.

The first step is to have the donor mare examined to make sure there are no problems evident that may affect the outcome of the ET process, this may include various swabs and tests as your vet feels are required. Once this done the stallion should be chosen, it is essential that some research is done into his fertility as this will significantly affect the likelihood of obtaining an embryo. The donor mare can be covered naturally or be inseminated with either chilled or frozen semen, imported from all over the world. Once an embryo has been produced this is transferred into a recipient mare. The recipient mares (usually leased from the ET facility) are often between the age of three and ten, of good temperament, slightly larger in size than the donor mare and with no history of fertility problems themselves. Ideally the recipient mare should be about 24 hours behind the donor mare in her cycle, hence their cycles must be synchronised. This can be difficult to achieve, that is why we generally try to synchronise between three and five recipients per donor mare to allow us to then pick the most appropriate recipient on the day of transfer. Often donor mare owners want to transfer embryos into another mare they own, this can be done but the likelihood of success is greatly increased with a larger number of recipients to choose from.

Synchronisation

The donor and recipient mares are synchronised by inducing them to come into season using prostaglandin injections. Regumate can be used, but this is expensive and not usually necessary. The

Planning ahead

The best time to start an ET program is in the spring when the mares are cycling well due to increased day length and also when they are on a rising plane of nutrition due to spring grass. Using artificial lighting to increase day length you could start as early Scanning twins as mid February. The success rate of any ET program is influenced by many factors, but now the chance of obtaining an embryo is very good. The costs that should be budgeted for include the cost of the stallion nomination, cost of inseminating the donor, cost of synchronising the recipient mares, cost of flush and transfer and cost of leasing the recipient mare until weaning. The prices are best obtained from your ET program provider, but it should be around ÂŁ2000 to ÂŁ2500 plus the cost of the stallion nomination, which varies depending on which stallion is chosen. The biggest cost is leasing the mare, which obviously you only do if you are successful in achieving an embryo. A new development that we have tried this year involves us flushing the donor mare at our facility and then the embryo being sent same day delivery to a large recipient herd in the Midlands. This has the advantage of allowing our donor mare owners to keep their mares at home and in work rather than sending them away for the ET. We also have access to their large herd of specifically selected recipient mares and transferring expertise.

The

Morgan Schive 2011 Side Saddle Junior Open Rider of the Year, Morgan Schive from Kent, began to ride side saddle eight years ago. Morgan, now aged 16, has experienced great success: firstly on her pony 13-yearold Henry Hoofer and subsequently on her horse seven-year-old Nightwatchman. Morgan explains: “When I was younger I competed in some veteran showing classes on my cob; this is when I saw a lady winning a class side saddle and from then on I became hooked.”

Gleam Team

Competing with Welsh cross Henry Hoofer, the pair won the Pony Rider Stakes at the National Side Saddle Show in 2006, 2007, and 2008, as well as winning the Preliminary Dressage Championship at Eaglesfield Equestrian Centre in 2011.

Earlier this year Morgan and Nightwatchman took part in the 2012 London Parade riding side saddle: “It was such a brilliant experience riding down Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square, past Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament. It was a day I will always remember!” For 2012 Morgan’s goals include to compete successfully in adult side saddle classes, to continue with affiliated dressage and to compete Nightwatchman in Working Hunter Classes.

Sophie Lawes Eleven-year-old Sophie Lawes from Petworth, West Sussex, is an upcoming young rider with great enthusiasm for riding side saddle. Sophie started learning to ride side saddle two years ago, also teaching her pony nine-year-old Make A Splash to start side saddle so they could learn together. When asked what attracted her to side saddle riding, Sophie explained: “The main attraction was seeing Caroline Wilkins out hunting side saddle. I said ‘Wow I want to do that!’’ Caroline is now Sophie’s instructor and is helping her achieve her goals. Her future goals are to qualify for the Royal International Horse Show, Royal Windsor and Horse of the Year Show. Sophie says: “My third goal is to do a full days hunting to make my dream come true!” Sophie is hoping to get a new pony soon, who she will also teach to go side saddle. It took approximately two lessons for Sophie to feel confident using a side saddle; she says at first she felt as though she might fall off as she felt very lop sided, but she knew the saddle was very secure and her confidence grew. She would like to thank Caroline and Belinda Wilkins “because they have been very supportive, lending me a side saddle and teaching me from the very beginning.”

FEATURE Here are my favourite, ‘must have’ products for 2012:

C

Quic Screen 8 day UVB Sunscreen screens the horse’s coat from the effects of the sun

oat bleaching from the sun can be a big issue for horse owners that like to show their animals, or in fact for any dark coloured horses. Much of the problems are caused by ultraviolet (UV) light, which causes chemical reactions in a form of radiation. The UV light can alter chemical bonds in molecules, which results in sunburn in people. In horses, the effects can be a dull, uneven coat – for example, dark bays may take on a light brown or ‘orangey’ tinge. A great new product exhibited at BETA is Quic Screen 8 day UVB Sunscreen. This clever product completely screens the horse’s coat from the effects of the sun, including dry hair, faded colour, damaged cuticles and coat fade, for eight days. Simply spray Quic Screen all over the mane, tail and coat of a freshly shampooed, damp horse and let it dry. The active ingredient will bind to the hair and protect it from the sun’s UVB rays for eight or more days, or until shampooed. Quic Screen even contains wonderful new skin and coat rehydrating ingredients for maximum dermal health; lab tests show that hair will remain virtually ‘virgin’ when applied. Dry skin is a problem for many ‘outdoorsy’ people, such as horse owners. Many topical creams just sit on the skin’s surface, however those that include silk protein tend to provide genuine care for skin. Silk protein comes from the centre of the silk worm yarn, and it is absorbed directly by human skin. It is probably the most advanced nutritive material for skin and hair products in the beauty market, currently. That’s why I like Outdoor Skin Daily Moisturizing Lotion by Cowboy Magic. This new lotion has been specially designed for people with hard Outdoor Skin Daily Moisturizing Lotion working, dry skin. It is perfect for those who contains Silk Protein can sometimes punish their skin by exposing it to the sun, wind and rain. Benefits: • It is concentrated - a little goes a long way. • It absorbs into the skin quickly. • It is a deep conditioner and especially boosts rough, dry skin on hands. • It is long lasting and contains Aloe Vera, Apricot Kernel Oil and Silk Protein. • It is a total face and body lotion. Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine is an effective detangler for horses; however the product is also rumoured to be loved by celebs including Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston. It detangles all types of hair knots, tangles and dreadlocks instantly, no matter how difficult hair is to manage. Again, it contains silk protein, which results in a high reflecting shine after brushing, whether the hair is human or equine! Benefits: Detangler and Shine • Contains no water or detangles all types of hair alcohol, does not dry knots, tangles and dreadlocks hair. instantly; human or equine! • Penetrates below the surface and restores moisture while strengthening hair, resulting in a natural shine with a soft texture. • Repels dirt, dust, and sand, resulting in a shine that lasts longer.

What was new at BETA?

BETA 2012 was a great showcase for manufacturers

By Stephen Biddlecombe of www.worldwidetack.com

BETA International 2012, the UK’s equestrian trade fair, saw some great innovations, and gave manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers the chance to meet up and look at new lines. Trade shows are a great way to view the products that will be hitting the shelves in six months’ time – or sooner, in many cases! Like everything, Trade shows showcase trends in equestrianism usually products that horse owners come around in cycles, and will soon see on their tack room shelves there’s often only a limited amount of new innovations that are possible. However, where we are seeing the most exciting products seems to be in the field of manufacture. For example, gelbased products incorporated into leather goods; technical fabrics for rider clothing; and active ingredients in liquid-based products that perform a particular action, whether it be repair or protection. I am quite a traditionalist, but at the same time can’t fail to be excited about new products that really fulfil a specific need!

10 Things

FEATURE

HAYGAIN have teamed up with Equine Exercise Physiologist, Scientist & Author, Dr David Marlin to tell us 10 things about a horse’s respiratory system we didn’t know.

1

The horse does not breathe through its mouth and nose like we do. The horse only breathes through its nostrils. The nasal passages in the horse are separated from the oral (mouth) cavity. They do not breathe through their mouths unless they have some injury or abnormality to the soft palate (the structure that separates the mouth from the nasal passages).

2

At canter and gallop normal horses take one breath perfectly in time with one stride. This is referred to as respiratory-locomotory coupling. A normal horse may swallow 1-2 times during each minute of exercise, but no more. The amount of time taken to inhale is the same as the time taken to exhale.

3 4

The amount of air moved in and out of the lungs increases in direct proportion to how fast the horse is running. If a horse runs twice as fast it must move twice as much air in and out. During exercise, when horses inhale, around 90% of the resistance (obstruction) to air movement is in the airways that are in the head, namely, the nostrils, the nasal passages and the larynx. But when horses are exhaling the majority of resistance to air movement (55%) is in the airways within the lung.

5

If you tighten a horse’s girth too much, then it will affect its performance not because of constricting the chest and preventing the lungs from expanding, but because it decreases the effectiveness of the muscles around the front of the chest and shoulder that move the forelegs.

6

Horses do not breathe by expanding and contracting their chest during canter and gallop. They expand and contract the chest when breathing at rest, when breathing at walk and trot, and perhaps most noticeably when blowing hard after exercise. But during canter and gallop, the air moves in and out along the lines of a syringe with the stiff wall of the syringe representing the chest and the plunger the diaphragm i.e. all air movement during canter gallop comes from movement of the diaphragm.

7 8

you might not know about the horse’s

respiratory system

We all know a healthy respiratory system is vital for a horse to have good performance. One of the biggest causes of respiratory problems is from hay dust. Said Dr David Marlin: “Even good quality hay contains dust, comprising of bacterial endotoxins, mould and fungal spores, forage mites, pollen and other ‘organic dust’. It is crucial to reduce or eliminate these potential allergens to ensure a healthy respiratory system. Steaming hay has been proven as an effective treatment for eliminating allergens that can be inhaled from hay. However, if you do not steam the hay properly you risk increased mould and bacterial growth in both the hay and the steaming chamber. HAYGAIN is the only method of steaming where I am confident the hay is steamed thoroughly and reaches the required temperatures to improve the hygiene quality of hay with no detrimental effects.” HAYGAIN is currently available in three models: the HG-1000, HG-600 and HG-GO. With all the HAYGAIN’s steaming hay in around 50 minutes depending on the model. Complete nutritional value and goodness are maintained with improved palatability and digestibility. For further information please contact HAYGAIN hay steamers on (0333) 200 5233 or visit www.haygain.co.uk

Improve Hay Improve Health

Horses hold their breath over jumps and do not breathe again until they land, starting with breathing out.

hay steamers

You cannot train the respiratory system of the horse. Plenty of books will tell you that you can. A number of scientific studies show the reverse. The amount of air moved in and out by an unfit horse at a fixed speed will be the same six months later when that horse is fully fit.

9

The blood pressure in the blood vessels within the horse’s lung (referred to as pulmonary blood vessels) during galloping increases around 4-5 times above that at rest. This is one of the factors that puts stress on the very thin walls of the blood vessels and leads to some of them rupturing.

HG-1000

Balanced Horse Feeds N-Hance This exciting product is from the recently launched Balanced Specialist range of feeds. N-Hance has been specially formulated to provide condition and topline for horses and ponies. N-Hance is blended from high levels of fibre and oil providing horses and ponies with slow release energy. a unique blend of antioxidants has been included to provide immune system support and to aid performance and recovery. MSM & Glucosamine are added for the nutritional support of healthy joints, and high levels of biotin are included to enhance coat bloom and to aid hoof quality and condition. N-Hance contains added magnesium and a pre-biotic to optimise digestion. www.balancedhorsefeeds.co.uk

Horslyx Horslyx provides a comprehensive nutritional package to combat summer health worries, including optimum levels of natural anti-oxidants to help boost the immune system, a high oil content to promote a shiny, healthy coat and a unique healthy hooves package containing biotin, methionine and chelated zinc to maintain horn quality throughout the year. www.horslyx.com

Blue Chip Original Whilst it is important for your horse to be in perfect condition for the show ring, you must always be aware of them putting on too much condition and the associated links with laminitis and being overweight. Weight can be assessed accurately on a weigh-bridge, but if this is not possible then a weigh tape can be used. Weigh tapes are a good way to monitor any changes in your horse’s weight but are not totally accurate and have been found to be inaccurate by as much as fifty kilograms. Blue Chip Original is the perfect feed balancer for show horses and ponies and contains optimum levels of vitamins and minerals, to meet the daily requirement of your horse or pony. With a comprehensive hoof supplement, SoundHoof, that includes biotin, lysine and organic zinc, and a respiratory supplement with garlic, menthol and eucalyptus to maintain lung health and integrity, you will not need to feed any additional supplements. Original is enhanced with generous levels of oils, for fantastic skin and a glossy coat. Blue Chip Original, like all the balancers in the Blue Chip range is whole-cereal and molasses free, making it very low in sugar and starch and contains the revolutionary ingredients Nucleotides, which are the building block of dNa and rNa and are essential for cell replication. www.bluechipfeed.com

Equine America More Muscle More Muscle Solution is a powerful extract of rice Bran supplement that helps to increase muscle capacity and condition, transforming your horse’s ‘top line’ in a month. More Muscle should be used in preparation for the show or dressage season, to prepare a youngster for sale, or to provide daily strength to the show jumper, eventer or racer with optimum muscle capacity for maximum power. www.equine-america.co.uk

NAF Pink Powder in The pink powder is a unique concentrated feed balancer, formulated using live yeasts and probiotics designed to optimise gut function and the natural digestive process by helping to create an ideal environment for the break down and assimilation of the horse’s food intake. in The pink powder not only optimises digestion, enabling your horse to fully utilize his diet and maintain perfect condition, it also contains high quality vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients to help support perfect health, vitality and performance. www.naf-uk.com

Stay Slim and Sound this Summer with Outstanding Results “I have been delighted with the way both my daughter’s ponies are looking and performing since moving them onto TopSpec Lite Feed Balancer last year. Taking part, as they do, in a whole range of activities - from Pony Club Games and Eventing, to top class affiliated showing - my requirements are that they look fantastic whilst maintaining a necessary level of fitness and controlled energy. TopSpec has delivered on all levels. I have also been pleased with the very positive feedback I have received from clients who have changed to TopSpec following advice from both myself and the extremely informative TopSpec Helpline. I would be happy to recommend TopSpec to any conscientious horse owner, both on a professional level, but also as a fellow grass roots equestrienne.” Rebecca Hamilton-Fletcher MRCVS BVSc (Hons)

Rosie Thomas British Event Rider “I use Instant Magic to help Barry’s Best deal with all his competitions which, these days, tend to be big occasions where the atmosphere is highly charged. Equally it’s great for the young, less experienced horses just starting out at their lower level competitions, it helps them focus and concentrate, which helps them learn and gives them real confidence. I truly believe Instant Magic helps me to ride my horses to achieve their best. The result? We all have a great time!”

LET’S GO EVENTING!

Reader of the Month Name: Rosie White Age: 14

Rosie jumping Milly at Crofton Manor

Occupation: Pupil at Cowplain School Horse: Milly, 13 years-old How long have you had your horse? Five years

Christopher Brick of ccbphotogrpahy

What do you do with your horse? I enjoy jumping, cross country, hacking, Gymkhana and competing. Future goals and ambitions: To compete at Olympia and eventually event. Favourite equestrian Product: Ifor Williams trailer, because if I didn’t have it I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere.

Bitting the event horse Feeding & Insuring the competition horse

Favourite food for your horse: Ride and relax Allen and Page Equestrian Idol: Pippa Funnel Where do you buy your Localrider: WHSmith Favourite Tack shop: Shedfield equestrian Favourite Horse Feed Shop: Shedfield Equestrian I have been riding for nine years and started at a local rescue yard where only a select few rode and helped out. I then went on to have a little Welsh A on loan, who taught me a lot. After him I had a few others on loan, but none of which I got on with. After that my parents decided to get me a horse on full loan. I started trying Milly out then and decided to take her on trial for three months. Still on loan we had many battles with her as she was originally rescued from France where she had been mistreated, she fought us over everything. After two-and-a-half years Milly finally found trust in me and I trusted her, ever since she has been a dream and in my eyes taught me how to ride properly. She never lets me down and always gives me 100%. Although she will never be a top winning pony she gives everything her all and is amazing.

However, along with my successes with Milly I have also had some show successes with a Fell that I show for his owner. George a 24-year-old Fell has also taught me a lot in the show ring, both ridden and inhand and occasionally driven. I have competed George at local shows, country shows and for the past two years I have competed at Royal London. During 2010 I qualified for the Royal London Horse Show where I was to compete against other veterans from around the country. My first class was inhand where we competed against other veterans from 20-24 years old, after a strong individual display it was time for our placing, and George took first place, which meant we were through into the evening performance under the spotlight. After a long day it was time to get ready for the championship in the main arena. The electric atmosphere stunned both me and George as we entered the ring with a spotlight upon us, but George knew what he had to do. With me holding on, he performed an amazing entrance. George later took the Veteran In hand Champion of Great Britain title and qualified for the Supreme Veteran, where we competed against the Ridden Champion and Reserves. Yet again George took it all in and performed well to take home both Champion and Supreme Veteran Champion of Great Britain. This year we are aiming to qualify for Olympia.
