news Cold Busting Tips

W

ith winter just around the corner the team at EquestrianClearance.com offer some useful tips and handy hints to help you and your horse through the colder months. • Floating a rubber ball in water troughs can help stop the water from freezing over in water troughs. • Consider adding a heater to your tack room, this will help keep your leatherwork warm and supple and help prevent it from cracking. • If your outdoor school freezes over try harrowing salt into the surface to prevent it from freezing. • Did you know thirty per cent of the body’s heat is lost through the head? Make sure you always wear a hat. • If it’s frosty, de-ice the steps and top surface of your mounting block so you don’t slip and frighten your horse. • Don’t forget your diet. Even though you might not feel like eating something chilled, your body needs help so eat fresh fruit and vegetables regularly to help combat colds and flu. • When travelling to the stables put your riding boots under the passenger side heater. Upon arrival put them on straight away and your feet will remain toasty for longer. • Wear tights or long johns underneath your jodhpurs this will help keep you snug. • Wear a pair of latex gloves under fingerless ones so they stay warm and you can still do fiddly jobs. • Invest in some thermals they have been designed to trap warm air and keep out the cold. • If you work in an office the contrasting conditions from a warm office to the chilly outdoors make you more susceptible to colds and flu’s – so beware. www.equestrianclearance.com.

Improve your seat through your feet

E

very rider loves to have a natural deep seat, but if you struggle to achieve this or have difficulty with your riding position or sometimes experience back problems, the cause is likely to stem from your boots. Whilst in the saddle your seat position is very much dependent on the position of your feet. The stirrup iron should be on the ball of the foot with your heels down. However, almost all short and long riding boots are designed with the point of sole contact that is no different from our everyday shoes. With Equitector riding boots you have no such problems as their boots are perfectly balanced for riding and you will instantly feel the difference. Without applying any pressure your feet will stay with you in the stirrup iron, whatever your leg position and your foot is steady at all times and will no longer slip. As your feet are now correctly balanced you will no longer tip forward in the saddle, thus avoiding back and joint problems. For more information visit www.equitector.com or telephone: 0208 0904029

Felicity pictured at home with Ambella Fizz and Dana Scully

Team Collins Eventing Fourteen-year-old Felicity Collins has set herself a goal, to ride around Badminton on a homebred horse, just like her mother did on the great Welton Molecule. Fiona Rafferty went along to meet Felicity and her mother, Vicky, at their home in Upper Dicker, near Hailsham.

F

elicity Collins has that rare talent of knowing exactly what she wants, setting in place a plan and going for it. At just fourteen years of age, she is focused, determined and successful. Listening to her chat about the ponies and horses she rides, she talks in depth and detail, knowing and understanding each horse as an individual. The daughter of four star event rider, Vicky Collins, it is no surprise that Felicity is such a competent and competitive rider. She first sat on a pony when she was nine-daysold and Vicky would regularly exercise her horses with Felicity snuggled in front of her. Vicky grew up in Kent in a non-horsey family, learning to ride at a Riding School. She was desperate to have her own horse and was always buying bits of tack, in anticipation of when she finally could. By the age of 17, Vicky had her first horse and was training with John Smart. She did freelance teaching, clipping, riding as well as buying and selling horses to finance her equestrian dreams. She rode in her first event when she was 21, on a chestnut mare, who she now admits was awful, but at the time, she thought was lovely.

The Heart of Sussex Sponsored Ride

o

ver 100 horses and riders took part in this year’s British Heart Foundation sponsored ride in mid-Sussex. They came in all shapes, sizes and ages and from as far away as Bexhill and Billingshurst. on a glorious sunny Sunday in September they set off over a 10 mile course around Wivelsfield, Plumpton and Street. it took them along a new route, through woodland and across open farmland with stunning views of the South Downs. This was made possible by the generosity and support of local landowners. The ride raised just under £3,500 to help fund vital research into heart disease, with some sponsorship money still to come in.

RDA National Championship Success Para grade iii rider Jackie lambert and her 14-year-old warmblood x tb bay mare, game Bird, came second with 68.4% at the prestigious rDa Hartpury national Championships. With combinations qualifying throughout the country, the competition was stiff and Jackie was pushed into second place by just one percent. Jackie said: “i know we still have room for improvement and i would love to be there again next year to try and claim the national title.” Jackie trains with iride artist alison Short and supplements her training with iride training downloads. Jackied continued: “i have found iride training downloads invaluable in helping me remain focused. Whilst i have regular training it’s often easy to lose direction and the quality of the work can slip when you’re training alone.” Jackie’s aim for 2013 is to qualify for the Para nationals at Hickstead and of course claim the rDa national grade iii title!

Great Chart Happy Hack Horse riders and countryside lovers took part in the 8th annual great Chart Happy Hack on Sunday 19th august, raising £1,500 for Kent air ambulance. a total of 109 riders enjoyed the eight mile hack at Court lodge Farm, great Chart, owned by The goddard Family. The Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance needs £5 million a year to keep the lifesaving helicopters in the air, and over the years, the happy hack has donated £13,000 to the charity. Diane Hogben, organiser, said: “We chose to raise money for the Kent air ambulance because it caught our attention, as quite possibly we will need their help one day.”

MOT day for horses The North & West Kent BHS were delighted with the results of their first MOT day, held at Mount Mascal stables. The event attracted 27 horses and the feedback was excellent from all the horse owners where they gained valuable advice on the health of their horses. For a small fee of £25, each horse had a dental assessment, thanks to Corrie Brown Bsc (Hons) EQDT IAED, received feed advice, thanks to Isabel Harker from Spillers, had their saddle checked, thanks to Eleanor Halley from SaddleWorld, as well as an overall body check using the Bowen Technique thanks to Martine Weber. Nelly Bachelet (BHSAI) - BHS N&W Welfare Committee said: “All of our partners gave their time free of charge for the benefit of the Horse’s Welfare, the money raised will be used to fund further BHS N&W Kent Welfare events. We are now looking at organising a follow up event in Spring 2013, the dates will be published via our web site www.BHS-KENT.org.uk.”

Training with Charlotte Dujardin

Raising money for the Brooke Lynn Bailey has been raising money for the Brooke, since 1997. With the help of her Basset hounds she has raised £9,935.41 to date. Lyn has raised the money by asking for a donation for people to hug or have their picture taken with her adorable dogs.

Southern ByrDS member Tia Quinn receives regular training from olympic double gold medallist, Charlotte Dujardin. The only complaint Tia has is Charlotte loves her pony Fantasia so much, that she has to always let her have a ride first! Charlotte is currently helping the pair with collected canter, simple changes, shoulder in and leg yield. Tia is a very ambitious young rider and hopes to base herself with Charlotte for some intensive training in between school work!

FEATURE

Have a go at Jump Cross By Jump Cross Instructor and British Horse Society Assistant Instructor, Michaela Huntington

I

am an avid show jumper, and through my teaching, regularly come into contact with people that are interested in Jump Cross. I recently passed a course to become Michaela Huntington, pictured an accredited instructor in the discipline right, is a fan of Jump Cross of Jump Cross, and would like to share some details about it with Localrider readers! Jump Cross is a relatively new equestrian sport, combining cross country with show jumping; the course is set cross country style, with around 25 fences up and down hills, and though water. All the fences can be knocked down like show jumps, so competitors have the excitement of cross country, combined with the accuracy of show jumping. Classes vary in height – see www.jumpcross.com for details.

What are its origins? Jump Cross was the brainchild of Robin Dunlop, of Grange Farm Equestrian Centre in Peterborough. After many years of building and observing cross-country courses and the manner in which they were ridden, Robin felt there must be a better way for both horse and rider to achieve a rhythmical, balanced style whilst developing a clean, accurate jumping technique. Jump Cross aims to provide all riders with a true cross-country sport with knock-down fences. It combines the excitement of cross-country with the accuracy of show jumping. It is not as intimidating as solid fences for horse or rider, yet commands balance, skill and respect, in order to jump them cleanly. How often have you heard the rapping of hooves over cross-country fences? This discipline aims to teach riders to ride in rhythm and balance. By riding in balance with their horses, they are much more likely to jump the fences cleanly.

Esther Amos and On Solo

Geoff Bridges riding Libbys Credit

The RS-tor is approved for use within Jump Cross competitions The RS-tor rider safety aid has been officially approved as a product that can be used at Jump Cross events. “It’s great to know that the RS-tor rider safety aid is ‘legal’ for use in all Jump Cross activities, so all competitors can feel safe and secure when competing. I use and recommend the RS-tor to my clients, as it can definitely aid stability in the saddle and prevent a fall, especially on an unpredictable horse,” says Michaela Huntington. The RS-tor may also be used in affiliated British Show Jumping competitions but may only be used in the warm-up sections of affiliated British Dressage and British Eventing contests. It does not contravene Pony Club equipment rules and may generally be used within BSPS Heritage and Tiny Tots showing classes. Always check with your event’s ground jury if unsure. Tell us about your Jump Cross experiences at http://facebook.com/rstorsafety.

The Jump Cross course The patented design of the Jump Cross course enables the poles to fall away from the horse should he knock them. This vastly reduces the possibility of rider injury should the horse hit the fence, he will merely run through it. The jumps are made from sturdy, shatterproof, weather-proof plastic, and the patented jump cups, with their round edges and unique design, poses less risk to both the horse and rider.

Who can try Jump Cross? Whether a seasoned competitor, nervous rider, someone coming back to jumping after injury, a rider who is bringing on a young horse or someone that is just looking for something more stimulating, Jump Cross could be for you. It is also proving itself as an invaluable training medium, with the benefits spilling over into all aspects of the horses Cassandra Badger work, not just jumping. and Redwings There is a definite Sianny riding style emerging and the successful Jump Cross horse and rider display true ‘togetherness’ in balance, rhythm and with that all important confidence! Jump Cross is proving a huge success within Pony Clubs and riding clubs across the south east, and also the wider UK regions. DECEMBER 2012 / JANUARY 2013 Localrider 27

C

az Duncan arrived at her horse’s field one morning to find he had severely injured one of his front legs. Seeing as the barbed wire fence was also damaged, it is thought that Brax tried to jump out of his field. “We think he jumped out and then jumped back in, due to the position of the fence,” Caz explains. Vet Julie Oswald was called immediately, and treated Brax in the field with painkillers before strapping the wound to stem the bleeding so that he could travel to hospital. “Brax was hospitalised for 10 days,” Caz explains. “At the time the prognosis was unclear, but in time the vets informed me that I would be lucky to ride him again before September 2012. “I’d heard about the ArcEquine Unit from a friend, and decided to give it a go. I used the Unit for six hours a day, every single day, starting on the 13th March, and placed the pads on Brax’s back legs as this seemed to be where they stayed in place best. Within a week the wound showed a 10 per cent improvement and six weeks later, at the end of April, Brax was well enough to ride again.”

How does the ArcEquine Unit work?

Cells in every being’s body communicate with all other cells through minute, cell specific, sequences of electrical current, measured in millionths of an amp. These regulate what goes into and out of every cell, enabling the body to function at its best. If there is disease or damage to a group of cells then, like any conventional electrical system, things fail to work properly. The ArcEquine Unit reintroduces these currents from an external source to mimic the body’s endogenous electrical circuitry and kick-start this metabolic processes. This has been shown to restore full function to badly damaged structures much more quickly than leaving the body to repair itself naturally. The overall process has proved to reduce scar tissue giving the horse a far better outcome for the future.

What can the Unit help with?

There are a number of conditions where the Unit can be of great benefit. These include:

rapidly dispersing swelling, bruising and inflammation reducing and eliminate pain providing relief for sore shins, shin splints and sore backs rapidly dispersing lactic acid preventing tying up reducing or preventing muscle soreness after exercise or a competition re-establishing the equilibrium of all physiological imbalances, e.g. neuro-electrical, neuro-chemical and hormonal imbalances, and immune/auto-immune deficiencies boosting the immune system reducing stress reducing or eliminating many behavioural problems.

The future’s bright

Since then, Brax has made a full recovery and the future is looking bright for Caz and her horse. “He’s competed in four BE events this year and I am delighted with the outcome,” says Caz. “I have my old horse back, and I got him back a lot sooner thanks to ArcEquine.” For more details, visit www.arcequine.com

Thank Christmas for the Victorians! By Lucy Nicholas of The Saddlery Shop

A

s the festive period is upon us we’d like to say a big thank you to the Victorians for bringing us the Christmas we know and love today! They brought us great Christmas traditions such as the tree, the card, the cracker, the decorations, the feast, the carols and some may say, the most important of traditions – the gift! We are currently inundated with orders at our below-RRP website, www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk, which makes December one of our busiest times. And we are not alone – online shopping is the way forward - last year, eight billion pounds was spent in online shopping alone during the run up to Christmas, and research shows that the average family can spend up to £700 during the festive season. But it’s hard to imagine that at the beginning of the 19th century, Christmas was hardly celebrated, and many businesses did not even consider it a holiday – can you imagine working on Christmas Day now?

Six Christmas facts

1

Many people believe that it was Queen Victoria’s marriage to German-born Prince Albert that helped introduce many of the Christmas traditions that are still celebrated today. In 1848, the Illustrated London News published a drawing of the royal family celebrating around a decorated Christmas tree, which Prince Albert often did as a child. British households were then awash with decorated trees.

Last minute Christmas gift ideas from www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk ‘The Barefoot Horse: An Introduction to Barefoot Hoof Care and Hoof Boots’ by Lucy Nicholas. Straightforward, impartial advice on making the transition from shod to barefoot. Barefoot boots are discussed in detail. ISBN: 978-0-85131987-2. Priced £14.99.

Would the 19th century horse have received a fancy dress set for Christmas?

2 3 4 5 6

In 1843 Henry Cole commissioned an artist to design a card for Christmas. During the years that followed, children were soon creating their own cards, and when colour printing took off and the postal service was accessible to the majority, the sending of cards became hugely popular. In 1880, 11.5 million cards were produced. In 1848, British confectioner Tom Smith visited Paris and came up with the Christmas cracker concept. Originally sweets were the prize, but during the late Victorian period, the sweets were replaced with hats and small gifts, which is still the tradition today. Although decorating the house at Christmas was not a new concept, the Victorians certainly made it more elaborate. They encouraged people to decorate their houses with elegance and style. It may have become slightly more tacky now, but it’s fun, none the less! Christmas dinner had been eaten since before the Middle Ages, but the Victorians introduced the turkey and the family values that Christmas held. They believed that Christmas was for the family to share together, so a large dinner was essential to the celebrations. Before the Victorian period, presents had been given at New Year, but with Christmas becoming more popular and celebrated, it was soon traditional for presents to be given on Christmas Day. As Christmas became more prominent, the presents became more extravagant, a tradition that certainly hasn’t diminished today!

hen Fiona Larwood arrived at her yard near Guildford in the summer she noticed her 21 year old mare, Quince, was in distress and before long Fiona was racing against time to save her from a bout of colic. “It was a hot evening and Quince appeared to be in discomfort: sitting up, then lying down and panting. At first I thought it was the heat but it was obviously more serious so I called Liphook Equine Hospital - a vet came within 20 minutes,” explained Fiona. Concerned about a rectal prolapse the vet gave Quince Buscopan and Bute to help get her back on her feet and recommended the mare be taken to Liphook. She was admitted to intensive care and placed on a drip while vets attempted to make a diagnosis. A low white blood cell count indicated infection, so she was placed in an isolation unit. Quince was kept on a drip while more tests were carried out and painkillers administered. Her appetite failed to return and the cause of the colic remained a mystery yet slowly, the veteran IDxTB began to recover, much to Fiona’s relief as she explains: “I couldn’t bear seeing Quince in such discomfort but I was relieved I had insurance. Surgery looked likely and although, I didn’t want her to have to go through that at her age, it was comforting to know that I didn’t have to worry about whether I could afford it. Thanks to Petplan Equine I could afford to say yes to whatever treatment was required.” Fiona had moved her horse insurance policy to Petplan Equine about 18 months prior. Due to Quince’s age, her previous insurer had increased premiums and reduced benefits providing vets fees cover for injury only and not illness. “I automatically renew my insurance, but when I realised that I would be paying more and receiving less, I decided to shop around. A friend at our yard recommended Petplan Equine because it provides cover for illness as well as injury until the horse is 25, as long as they are insured with Petplan Equine before their 20th birthday. Quince was 18 and so, eligible. Judging by her remarkable recovery my money’s on her making it to at least 25” she said with a smile” That was the beginning of August and now, having made a full recovery, the former, show jumper is back enjoying her life as a very happy hacker - a reliable, kind first horse for Fiona’s husband. The total claim for Quince’s treatment was £2853.00. For further information on Horse Insurance visit www. petplanequine.co.uk

Held at top competition venues across the UK these events give riders the chance to compete in top class arenas and experience true championship conditions. Isabella Von Mesterhazy, Petplan Equine’s Head of Marketing said: “This is the 13th year in which Petplan Equine has supported this series and it has certainly been lucky for these accomplished amateur dressage riders! Dressage is UK’s fastest growing equestrian discipline and this trend is likely to continue thanks to the outstanding efforts by members of British Dressage riders in Greenwich who claimed team and individual gold and individual bronze medals. We wish all those who have qualified here at Pachesham Equestrian Centre the very best of luck in the Petplan Equine Area Festivals Championship next April.” Further information about the Area Festivals is available from the Petplan Equine website at www.petplanequine.co.uk/events

Caring for our equine senior citizens By Stephen Biddlecombe of online retailer www.worldwidetack.co.uk

O

ur horses are now having longer functional lives, as nutrition, surgical procedures and awareness of welfare issues mean that equines are generally physically fitter for longer. Because of this, the market for products for senior horses is growing - for example, with awareness of preventative measures increasing, owners are now able to help prevent some joint degeneration in the tissues of a horse with minor joint problems. The supplementary feeding product, Senior Grand Flex from Grand Meadows, offers long-term joint support and utilises scientifically researched ingredients at the correct levels to provide therapeutic solutions for optimal joint function. Various sizes are available, but the 60 dose / 3.75lb tub is currently reduced to just £58.97 EXC VAT, from www.worldwidetack.co.uk.

Digestive health

We can also aid digestive health through feed supplements, helping boost immunity and reducing the risk factors for colic. One of the main nutritional factors for veterans is worn or Grand Flex Senior missing teeth – this can result in the inability to offers long-term joint support for grind down food into small particles, meaning that older horses partially digested food works its way through the digestive system, potentially causing impaction or blockage, which has the potential for colic. Also, as our equines age, it is natural for their digestive function to deteriorate, resulting in digestive disturbances; some older horses also have a compromised immune system. Many experts recommend dietary supplements that Grand Meadows’ aid digestion – as an example, Grand Meadows’ Grand Digest manages Grand Digest, the only supplementary equine all three stages of digestive aid that manages all three stages equine digestion of equine digestion, is ideal for older horses. www.worldwidetack.co.uk has several sized products available, but currently offers 20% off its 25lb tub, now priced at £114.00, EXC VAT.

Factors like malabsorption in the gut or organ disease could affect equine condition – winter is a tricky time for veterans features unique cushions that enable fit and comfort, and ‘Octopus’ style tentacles to aid impact and offer non-slip properties, and help the saddle stay secure. RRP is £36.75 EXC VAT at www.worldwidetack.co.uk. Remember to have your saddle checked and re-flocked regularly as your horse ages, and also to have veterinary investigation of any unexplained weight loss. Factors like malabsorption in the gut or organ disease could affect equine condition.

Left a bit, right a bit...

Another factor for older equines is that their muscle elasticity decreases, while tendons and ligaments can be more prone to muscle pulls and strains. Gentle stretching exercises that increase the stretch tolerance of the muscles as well as the connective tissues may help the older horse to maintain flexibility. An older horse that is feeling the cold a little more than his younger counterparts, and has more aches and pains, will really enjoy a gentle grooming massage with a mitt worn on the owner’s hand. This can help boost lymphatic drainage, release toxins, warm up the horse and also help him relax and bond with you. The Sheepskin Grooming Mitt from www.worldwidetack.co.uk is ideal for this purpose, and retails at just £6.25 EXC VAT.

Saddle fit

A further problem for veterans is saddle fit – as they age, horses’ musculature and physical shape changes, which often goes hand in hand with a reduction in workload, resulting in potentially less coverage along the top-line and over the animal’s back. In addition, as degenerative changes take place, the animal’s posture can change, meaning the saddle fit can be different. Furthermore, if the horse’s training regime declines, the horse will be asked to carry itself in self-carriage less, and will be ridden less frequently in an outline with driving hindquarters and a ‘through’ back. The rider may also choose more slow hacks, less technical competitions and less demanding arena work as the horse ages. Add to this a general loss of condition, which can occur in veterans, and we see that all factors can lead to asymmetry and muscle wastage. A simple solution and one favoured by many owners of veteran horses is the Gel-Eze Super Wither Pad, ideal for high withered horses in general, but also especially good for older horses that are losing condition around the wither area, and have ‘gaps’ at the front of the saddle. What is Colic? C

olic is the name given to the group of symptoms that indicate abdominal pain. The incidence of colic increases dramatically in the spring and autumn periods, this appears to coincide with the changes that we have to make in the horse’s management because of the weather. ‘Medical colics’ are incidents that require a few injections and possibly stomach tubing to cure. Approximately 95% of colics are medical and relatively simple to sort out. The remaining 5% are ‘surgical colics’ that require major abdominal surgery to correct, without this type of procedure the horse would have to be put to sleep.

Surgical colic

Except in some specific instances medical colics rarely go on to become surgical. The prognosis for horses and ponies that have to have colic surgery is improving all the time, there are several reasons for this including the increased number of practices that undertake these operations, so patients are not having to travel long distances before surgery can be done, hence the procedures are carried out sooner in the onset of the problem and the outcome is more favourable. Also the surgical techniques, the anaesthetic methods and the post operative care are improving all the time, often the surgery is the relatively straight forward bit, the management of the patient after the operation, in terms of getting the intestines working properly and dealing with endotoxaemia can be the more challenging. Usually a horse that has had colic surgery in the past has a ventral midline abdominal scar that can be felt in the skin under the belly. Sometimes this has small soft areas in it, where there has been slight breakdown of the muscle scar under the skin. Horses that have had colic surgery may be a little more sensitive to medical colic in the future, as I think they worry about the pain they have experienced before. Also there is a risk that there may have been some adhesions that have formed due to the previous surgery, these are fibrous bands that attach to the bowel and possibly stop it moving and expanding as it needs to, as such the bands pull tight and periodically cause pain. The incidence of abdominal adhesions has decreased over the years, as the surgical techniques have got better.

Bacterial fermentation

The horse’s digestive system relies on bacterial fermentation to breakdown the ingested food. When the management routine has to change abruptly, such as when access to grazing is denied, there is often an imbalance in the types of bacteria present in the bowel. This bacterial imbalance can result in irritation of the bowel and increased gut contraction (spasmodic colic) or excessive gas production (gas or tympanic colic), that stretches the bowel causing pain and thus symptoms that we call colic. Changes in bacterial balance can also result in a reduced ability to digest fibre and the possibility of the bowel becoming blocked at one of its many “S” bends such as at the pelvic flexure, causing an impaction. The management changes are not just dietary but are also associated with the amount of exercise. A reduction in the amount exercise can also reduce gut activity and predispose to impactions, as can horses suddenly coming in onto a straw bed and eating it. Change the bedding to shavings or paper if your horse is a bed eater. If your horse has to have box rest then adjust its diet accordingly, give plenty of bran with the feed, even consider hand picking grass to feed.

Worm problems

Worms are a significant factor with regards to colic, horses and ponies are susceptible to different worms at different stages of life, for example foals and yearlings have more problems with ascarids; however small red worms, cyathostomes, and tapeworms are significant for all ages. We are now seeing an increased incidence of resistance by worms to wormers. Small red worms in large numbers can cause bowel irritation and colic, but they are more likely to cause diarrhoea. Tapeworms are certainly very significant as a cause of recurrent colic in some horses, they can be quite large and if they attach to the wall of the bowel where there is a nerve plexus that stimulates intestinal contraction they can cause spasmodic colic where the bowel cramps or contracts excessively. In young horses these excessive contractions can be so marked they cause the bowel to telescope inside itself causing an intersusception, which requires surgery to fix.

Gastric ulcers

Another significant factor with regards to colic due to management change in some horses may be the development of gastric ulcers. These occur when horses are fed high cereal diets and not allowed access to enough roughage. They are relatively easy to diagnose using a very long video endoscope to visualise the lining of the stomach. Gastric ulcers cause aberrations in the digestive process and the build up of abnormal bacteria and predispose to colic. Treatment is with oral anti-ulcer medication and is very effective. There are several steps that can be taken to reduce the incidence of management associated medical colic that may occur in the spring and autumn: • In the spring and autumn try to make the change from stable to grass and grass to stable as slow as possible, gradually reducing the hours grazing and vice versa in the spring. • Allow access to roughage little and often, horses are supposed to eat for a large proportion of the day. • Consider the use of a probiotic preparation to supplement the diet with normal digestive bacteria. • Make sure the teeth are in good order, poor teeth may predispose to impactions. • Take advice from a nutritionist as to the best diet for your horse’s exercise level, base it on a high fibre diet, low in cereal and then feed by eye the required volume. If you find it difficult to judge your horse’s weight, using a weigh tape can be useful when monitoring. • Cut back the hard feed by half when the horse is not going to be exercised, this will also prevent tying-up. • Make sure that the worming programme for the yard is satisfactory. Take advice from your vet. Using worm egg counts from a dropping sample to monitor the effectiveness of the wormers being used is important, this will check whether you have a resistance problem. Tape worm levels are monitored using a blood sample. Obviously paddock management in terms of dropping picking is important. Don’t be worried about worming, it may be coincident that the colic is occurring around the time of worming as of course this is the time the management is changing also. Autumn is the time when tapeworms should be treated and also small red worms before they encyst in the bowel wall. • Try to allow some exercise on a daily basis, horse walkers are very useful for this. • Try to keep management constant in terms of feeding and exercise routine – rapid changes can result in changes in gut bacterial flora and the build up of gas producing bacteria for example, resulting in tympanic colic.

Feeding the Stabled Horse Words provided by BedSoft/HaySoft

D

uring winter, most horses spend an increased time in the stable, which unavoidably causes additional upkeep costs to owners. A high quality bedding and forage provides a cost effective means of ensuring happy and healthy horses over the winter months. BedSoft bedding is made from excellent quality wheat and rape straw, which is extremely versatile and can be used for traditional bed, deep litter beds or on top of rubber matting. The BedSoft bedding is shredded and chopped through a unique machine - the increased surface area of chopped straw means that the bedding becomes more absorbent and locks in moisture. The chopped BedSoft bedding is then dust extracted using state of the art machinery; this is an important aspect to consider when choosing bedding for winter. A dusty environment can raise a number of issues for stabled horses, including the risk of respiratory problems.

soaking hay the water strips the hay of much of its nutritional value. To combat this, HaySoft have created an excellent quality haylage that is dust free so therefore does not require soaking. The high quality haylage has a higher nutritional value than hay, making it a cost effective feeding solution throughout the winter months. The process of making HaySoft haylage is a carefully considered routine, which seeks to retain as much of the natural goodness of grass as possible. The quality haylage is produced by cutting grass in late May or early June when nutritional values are at optimum levels. Instead of allowing the grass to dry out completely, the grass is baled when the moisture content reaches 30-35%. The haylage is then tightly wrapped and allowed to ferment for 8-10 weeks, which preserves nutrients, proteins and prevents dust spores or mould from forming.

Homegrown Chaff

In addition to their two types of quality bagged halyage – Haysoft Original and HaySoft High Fibre – HaySoft also offer two chaffs. The chaffs are HaySoft Oat Chaff and HaySoft Hay Chaff, which are produced using homegrown grass and oat straw. The HaySoft Hay Chaff can be used as an addition to your horses hard feed to provide additional forage and helps to discourage horses from eating too quickly. The high quality aspect of HaySoft Hay Chaff means that it can be used as a replacement to hay. HaySoft Oat Chaff is a traditional and low calorie feed, which is ideal for good doers while providing all of the essential nutrients. To find out more about HaySoft Haylage and Chaffs please visit www.HaySoft.co.uk

Sweet smelling

Finally, BedSoft bedding is treated with Trus-STEED’s fragrant biosecurity products. A horse’s stabled environment is an area of high activity and the warmth provided makes it a high risk area for the breeding of unpleasant bacteria and viruses. The Trus-STEED treatment helps to protect both horse and owner from harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores. In addition to its protective properties, BedSoft’s Trus-STEED treatment is also insect repellent and the fresh lemon fragrance helps to combat ammonia odours. The Trus-STEED treatment also leaves a bitter taste when eaten in order to discourage bed-eating habits. Not only does the bedding boast a number of beneficial properties for your horse, it is also very manageable and easy to muck out. The biodegradable nature of the bedding means that muck heaps reduce quickly and the waste can be spread straight on to land – thus reducing costs and providing an ideal fertiliser. Our sponsored rider, Andrew Gould says of BedSoft: “The bedding is so easy to muck out and really absorbent, which reduces wastage…and cost! The added bio-security aspect of the bedding means that I know my horses have added protection when they are stabled away from home.” To accommodate the needs of all horses and owners, there are four available products in the BedSoft range: BedSoft Original, BedSoft Bio, BedSoft Bio Plus and BedSoft Blend. Maintaining the nutritional content

The depleted quality and quantity of grass throughout the winter months means that extra measures must be taken to facilitate the health and condition of your horse. Poor quality, dusty hay can cause health problems, allergies and result in a loss of condition for horses. Many owners soak hay to reduce the dust content of hay. However, though this effectively reduces the dust content, by

Winter W Feeding Supplied by Blue Chip Feed

inter time can mean a complete change of routine for many horse owners (and horses) and diets can change dramatically. Often horses that aren’t in work or are in light work spend all summer turned out, with a diet of grass, and then winter arrives and they are stabled for long periods and given ‘hard feed’ and hay or haylage. These major changes in diet and management routines can have a dramatic effect on the equine digestive system and can easily lead to complications such as colic and unwanted stereotypical behaviour. If you are changing your horse’s routine dramatically during winter try to make the changes gradually. Start by bringing him into the stable for short periods and gradually extend these. During autumn and winter, grass starts to lose its nutritional value and will eventually stop growing and become dormant. Supplementing your horse or pony’s diet with hay or haylage is the best way to keep a healthy digestive system and reduce the chances of colic. Introduce hay or haylage gradually, ideally in the field to establish a diet that is largely made up of fibre.

Balancing the diet Horses have evolved to eat a mainly fibre diet, however a diet solely of grass is not always possible in winter and is often lacking in essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients, this is why the diet needs to be supplemented with hay or haylage. Grass also contains natural antioxidants which will be depleted in winter. Feeding a high quality feed balancer such as one from the Blue Chip range will ensure that your horse or pony is getting a nutritionally balanced diet, and because all the Blue Chip balancers are nutrient dense they are fed in small quantities. Blue Chip balancers are whole-cereal and molasses free and include a fruit derived form of vitamin E, which is a powerful natural antioxidant.

Keeping warm takes energy Horses can use up to 80% of their feed energy keeping warm; fibre is the most ‘warming’ feed, as more heat is produced during digestion of fibre than any other nutrient. All of the Blue Chip balancers contain an EU approved probiotic which has been proven to double the digestibility of fibre in the diet, meaning that they will get twice as much ‘warming energy’ out of their hay or haylage. Stabled horses need a well ventilated stable to help prevent dust allergies and spores irritating the airways. All the Blue Chip balancers contain a comprehensive respiratory supplement that includes garlic, menthol and eucalyptus, to promote lung health and integrity. Also included in the balancers are a hoof supplement and a purified form of nucleotides, which are the building blocks of DNA and RNA and aid nutrient absorption, injury recovery and improve the horse’s immune system.

Plenty of water Dehydration can be a major factor in colic cases and this is especially true in winter when horses aren’t inclined to drink as much, particularly when water is colder than normal. The maintenance level of fluid requirements for an adult horse is 50ml/kg of bodyweight per day. Encouraging fluid intake can be done by offering slightly warmed water and if your horse or pony is still not keen to drink, try wetting the feed or using a high water content source of fibre such as un-molassed sugar beet. Providing a high fibre diet that is complemented by a balancer from the Blue Chip range, along with careful management will mean that you can enjoy this winter safe in the knowledge that your horse is getting a nutritionally balanced diet and will be happy and healthy. FEED NEWS

Winter FEEDING

Whether you own a hardy pony who will be living out all winter or a competition horse who will be in work, we have hopefully found some products that may be just right for your horse this winter. ReadyMash Extra

NAF GastriAid

For horses that tend to drop weight over the winter months ReadyMash Extra is an ideal feed to incorporate into the diet, supplying high fibre levels alongside essential oils and milk powders it helps to encourage the necessary condition whilst supplying an excellent source of slow release energy. Ensuring the fibre levels are maintained is crucial not only for maintaining a healthy hindgut but also to help to maintain body temperature. Designed to be fed soaked as a soft textured mash ReadyMash Extra is also extremely palatable for horses that chew and digest less efficiently, by feeding a mash this also helps to maintain ample water intake. Glucose powders are also included to aid reduced recovery time after a hard day’s work and to promote appetite in fussy feeders along with an advanced vitamin and mineral supplement. This helps provide your horse with all the essential nutrients needed for a fully balanced diet.

Latest research is repeatedly highlighting the prevalence of Ulcers in horses, and, that’s not just in racehorses but in your horses. NAF have responded with the research and development of GastriAid, a brand new supplement to maintain your horse’s stomach in healthy, happy condition and support an ulcer free environment. Without a gastroscope it is difficult to detect ulcers in the stomach. However, there are ways of assessing that your horse might be prone, or showing signs of ulcer formation in his stomach. Horses who are kept stabled for long hours, eat a high grain diet, work hard and regularly travel are fairly high risk, especially if they are of a stressy, highly strung nature. There are also characteristic behaviour patterns that may indicate the possibility of a stomach ulcer. These habits include: box walking, wind sucking, crib biting, a ‘cold back’ or displaying irritability when being girthed up, a poor attitude or unwillingness to work, whilst a dull coat or loose droppings can also be tell tale signs. New GastriAid is designed to naturally support the absence of ulcers in the stomach by defending the stomach wall from acid build up and help maintain the pH balance in the gut, and thereby, providing daily protection from stress related gastric problems including ulceration. This advanced formulation has been created by world leading veterinary nutritionists. It contains antacids, pre and pro biotics, together with herbal support to provide daily protection and maintenance of the gut, at an affordable cost per day, and give your horse the stomach lining he deserves to be able to work and perform in comfort and to the best of his ability. Please call the NAF Freephone Advice Line 0800 373 106 for more information.

Saracen Essential Balancer Forage alone will not meet a horse’s vitamin and mineral requirements, and in some cases, will not meet energy requirements for the work being done or to maintain body condition in the winter. Concentrate feeding will be necessary but your choice of feed may be the difference between having a sensible, quiet horse, or one that never has four feet on the ground! Look for feeds that provide the energy in the form of digestible fibre sources and higher oil levels. These both provide slow release energy ideal for stabled horses over the winter. Saracen Cooling Mix plus Herbs is an oat-free, non heating mix formulated with the optimum balance of digestible fibres and oil for sustained energy release. For those that are good doers or in light work feed balancers such as Saracen Essential Balancer ensure a balanced diet, at a cost effective price point. Make sure that you are feeding the manufacturers recommended feeding amounts to ensure optimum nutrient intake. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com

Easy Pack Haylage Easy Pack Meadow Haylage is high in fibre with medium protein and energy levels, ideal winter forage for horses in low to medium work. Easy Pack Rye Haylage provides medium protein levels with high fibre and energy for horses in hard work or competition throughout the winter. Both Easy Pack Meadow and Rye Haylage are perfect for older horses or those who struggle to maintain weight throughout the colder months, and its low dust content means no need for soaking in freezing temperatures! Feeding Easy Pack Haylage comes with so many benefits including; reduces stress to the respiratory system, improves digestion, provides enough nutrients and energy to reduce, or in many cases remove the need for hard feed and with it the associated health risks and behavioural problems, saves you time and money, plus your horse will love it! www.easypackhayalge.com
