Welcome T

he last month has flown-by, with weather that has been impossible to predict. The weekend of 22nd and 23rd September we were at Great Bookham for the Sunshine Tour Championships see page 58. Saturday was extremely hot and sunny, while on Sunday it rained so much even my wet weather gear leaked. The weather didn’t dampen the competitors’ spirits and I think I can say it was one of the best Sunshine Tour Championships I have been to. While we were surviving the rain in Surrey the sad news, that the South of England Horse Trials had abandoned all but their international classes, came through via the mighty twitter. For Alice Kent’s lovely report turn to page 48. The other main highlight of my month was spending several days at the Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham. There was an impressive list of riders from the South East who had qualified and I tried to watch as many of them in action as I could. There were a few favourite moments, so turn to page 22 to read more. Sadly I have to tell you that on 17th September, Cyril Light passed away. Cyril and his wife Valerie founded the Brendon Stud, which over the years has produced many top horses, including Warrior who jumped at the Olympics and Don VHP Z, who was more recently sold to an overseas rider preparing for Rio. Stephanie DeWitt has written a wonderful account of Cyril’s life in Sussex and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did, page 18. There is no escaping the fact that winter is approaching and it feels like it is doing so fast. With this in mind we have looked at winter feeding, bedding and worming as well as testing some gorgeous stable and turnout rugs, see page 50. And if you feel like a little treat turn to page 32 and see what Santa’s stocking this year. Next month we will be celebrating ten years of Localrider Magazine. I can’t wait to start on the Anniversary Issue and to look back at all the amazing horses and riders we have featured over the last ten years. Until then, wrap up warm and have fun!

utumn is here – you could have some time on your hands during the dark evenings or wet weekends. Take the opportunity to study for and bag some new qualifications? You could be looking forward to a whole new career opportunity in 2013. Well trained and qualified Instructors or Professional Grooms are in short supply. Get some internationally recognised qualifications for a full or part time job to fit in with other commitments such as your own competition horses or even young school age children. Coldblow equestrian Centre has just launched its Autumn/Winter series of equi-courses. Primarily aimed at students wishing to gain professional career qualifications they are equally suitable for those wanting to improve their riding or broaden their knowledge as an owner. bHS (british Horse Society) qualifications have been updated and now known as Certificates and Diplomas to bring them into line with school and college exams. Stage one is Level one Certificate in riding & Horse Care. Stage Two is Level Two Diploma (GCSe), Stage Three is Level Three Diploma (A Level). Stage 4 and the Intermediate Teaching Test are considered on a par with a Degree. Coldblow has a wide range of course options: daytime, evenings or Sundays. bHS exams can now be studied in units, so if you have a hiccup on exam day you can go back and just retake that one unit. This also gives students the opportunity to join in a course at anytime. Tuition Fees – not as expensive as you might think. Fees start from £36 per two hour Level one or Two session, £45 for Level 3 and above. See Coldblow’s website www.coldblowridingschool.co.uk for their Course Handbook and info on the ladder of qualifications leading to internationally recognised qualifications.

...We look back at our favourite moments from the last 10 years Tried & Tested: EquiCloth Grooming to Perfection Following 15 months of research, design and trials, EquiCloth products have been developed to offer horse owners an improved way of cleaning their horse. Born from a desire to find a more superior material than normal cotton towels or sponges, EquiCloth can be used to keep your horses coat looking immaculate. Made from high quality microfibre EquiCloth products have been manufactured to provide the ultimate combination of softness, absorption, cleaning power and durability. www.equicloth.com LR Comment: Having used various cheap cloths and sponges to bath the horses over the years it was a pleasure to be asked to Test the EquiCloth. The Cloths are of a soft feel to both hand and horse and thus making a pleasure to use and also leave an outstanding shine on the coat. The cloths are dual purpose and can also be used around the yard or for whatever other job you have in mind! I actually used the small one on my dog whilst washing and was pleased with the overall result. I will definitely use both items again!

news Digestive Health from Dengie

H

ealthy Tummy is a new complete fibre feed from Dengie, created from the finest home-grown alfalfa and then blended with ingredients to promote optimal digestive health. Alfalfa has long been recognised as a natural buffer to acidity in the horse’s gut and should form the foundation of the feed ration for those that are suffering from ulcers or have had them in the past, or as a preventative for others whose owners are concerned about the possible occurrence of ulcers. In addition to alfalfa, Healthy Tummy includes oregano, cinnamon and ginger, which are believed to be powerful antioxidants, as well as improving palatability. Protexin In-Feed Formula, with prebiotics and live yeast, have been included to aid fibre digestion further, along with a high specification of vitamins and minerals – including biotin – and a light coating of soya oil for slow-release energy and coat shine. Dengie senior nutritionist Katie Williams, MSc (Dist), further explains the thoughts behind the development of this product: “There is a lot of evidence to show that low-fibre diets contribute to gastric ulcers, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that the stresses of many horses’ lifestyles, even those in light work, are also contributing to the problem. Healthy Tummy has been designed so that you can enjoy spending time with your horse doing fun and exciting things, without worrying that you could be compromising their health.” Research shows that about 40 per cent of leisure horses, 60 per cent of competition horses and 90 per cent of racehorses could be affected by Equine Gastric Ulcer s. For further information on the role of a high-fibre diet in helping to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers or to contact the Dengie Feedline, log on to www.dengie.com, email feeds@dengie.com or telephone 0845 345 5115.

Video to show how to fit the RS-tor The RS-tor rider safety aid helps prevent falls and also aids riding confidence – it fulfils a similar purpose to a neck strap, but is many more times safer. A new video has been produced by the team, presented by leading dressage trainer Sarah Millis, which explains how to fit the product to the saddle – it is available to view at www.rstor.co.uk “Although it is a very simple product, we do get queries from customers wanting to know how to correctly fit the RS-tor, hence we produced the film to give a step by step instructions,” says the product’s inventor, George Gorman. The RS-tor is held unobtrusively in the hand like a riding whip, and comes into effect in the event of a spook, rear, trip, buck or cat leap. Priced £44.99: Child’s, S & M/L sizes. RDA receive £130k from Countrywide The fundraising efforts of staff and customers at Countrywide have resulted in a donation of over £130,000 to Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). The money was gratefully received on behalf of the charity by RDA President, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal. The money has been raised through various means, including golf and shooting days, a silent auction and via Countrywide’s specialist in store equine, pet, smallholder and farmer events. An extra effort was made by countrywide employee Charles Delf, who completed a 1,125 mile bike ride raising nearly £20k. This courageous challenge undertaken by Charles, National Alternative Feeds Manager for Countrywide, saw him cycling an average of nearly 100 miles on 12 consecutive days. Pony Racing Finals here were a handful of South east based riders racing at newmarket racecourse on Saturday 6th october for the 2012 Charles owen Pony racing Finals. The day saw 24 budding jockeys take to the track, having qualified throughout the Series at 27 British racecourses between april and october. The Jockeys and many others involved in the initiative, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the 100+ graduates from Pony racing that have already progressed and hold a BHa Jockeys’ licence, in addition to many more that now work within the horseracing industry. The finals were held over distances of 6f and 8f with the winners crowned the 2012 Charles owen Pony racing Champions. Former Pony racing rider Harry Derham said: “i am so thankful to Pony racing for the experience

is it that

it gave me before i turned professional. i learnt so much from it, from race riding tactics and technique to general fitness requirements, etiquette and procedures in racing. i had some great days Pony racing and hope i can be as successful as a professional jockey now! i rode in The Finals a few times but sadly never won them.” rebecca Davies, Chief executive of the Pony racing authority, said: “The 2012 Charles owen Pony racing Finals are the culmination of the best part of a year’s hard work for many riders. Charles owen’s investment and support of Pony racing is significant. not only have they backed the initiative since 2005, they have recently committed to a further two year’s sponsorship until 2014. all riders will receive a Charles owen helmet (worth over £1,500 in total) thanks to the continued generosity of our sponsor.”

Could a saddle combat rider back pain? By saddler David Kempsell of First Thought Equine

R

ider back pain is extremely common and debilitating. There’s no single cause for it – although the fact that riding is a repetitive, concussive action undoubtedly causes ongoing strains on the tissues and joints. Riders commonly cite pain in the lumbar region (or by association higher up the body), and muscle stiffness is especially common.

Below: Riding is a repetitive, concussive action that undoubtedly causes back strains

Here are some common causes of back pain in humans – • Twisting or pulling of a muscle. • Compression of the spinal cord and nerves. • Disc damage. • Degeneration of joint cartilage. Now, surely if the rider was to ride in a saddle that was flocked with air that reduced concussion to nerves and spinal processes, they would experience less concussive forces? And if they rode in a saddle that featured a narrow waist, the narrowest part of the saddle seat, they would experience greater pelvic comfort? And if their saddle had a laterally flexible carbon fibre tree, this would allow the rider‘s hips, lumbar region and pelvis to mobilise with each step? Lizzie Pollard from West Sussex shares her experiences of back pain: “I own several equines, and previously had a career working with horses. I Lizzie Pollard uses a WOW worked in various yards and saddle with an H girth, pictured, am a qualified BHSAI. on her mare Woodfield Lass However getting to this stage wasn’t easy. I have dyspraxia, a chronic neurological disorder that affects movement and co-ordination. In addition, I also had a calcium deficiency as a child, which leads to brittle bones; I hurt myself very easily and carry a lot of old injuries. Despite my conditions, I learned to ride as a child, as my Mum said I couldn’t do much more to hurt myself! My dyspraxia made it quite hard, but I persevered and proudly passed my BHSAI as an adult. However, all through my riding career, when I had ridden whatever horse I was given, in whatever saddle, I had suffered with back and hip pain on every occasion. I eventually came out of working with horses full time, as my body couldn’t take the pain, and I took an office job – I felt it was the best for my body, as the cold wet winters did not help. I went on to buy Logan, a five-year-old Irish Sports Horse, who was just great; but he kept changing shape, and after a few saddlers and nine saddles later, I was introduced to WOW Saddles. Louise from Surrey-based Shere Saddlery came out and let me ride in a WOW demo saddle; I told her about my hip and back pain, and she said that because the WOW has a narrow waist, the narrowest part of the saddle seat; a narrow twist, the section that sits beneath the waist, within the saddle tree; and a laterally flexible carbon fibre tree, it could help with my back pain. She explained that the WOW saddles allow the rider’s back, pelvis and hips to mobilise gently in time with the horse, while in perfect body alignment. In addition, the Flair air-bag flocking is supercomfortable in terms of shock absorption on the rider’s back. When I got off from this saddle, I had no pain for the first time ever after riding. So I bought a WOW for Logan because he changed shape so much, and it made him feel much freer when he moved. When I got my second horse, Asti, it was the logical thing to go back to Louise and get another WOW, this time a secondhand model. This saddle has since passed from Asti (who I sadly lost

Around 85 percent of people experience back pain at some point in their lives last year) to my new mare Woodfield Lass, who had previously had a bad back herself. She loves the saddle with the “H” girth from First Thought Equine, as she is very sensitive in the girth area, and the special, anatomically-designed girth helps with cold backed or horses that are sensitive when girthed. Logan also wears the “H” girth to help when he canters or jumps, as it stops the saddle from moving, even when he does a flying leap! I would recommend them to any rider and any horse at whatever level; I only go as far as riding club one day events, but it has changed my riding and wellness forever.” Visit www.wowsaddles.com

British Showjumping News Coombelands Equestrian to run Club Shows W e are delighted to announce that Coombelands Equestrian in Sussex will be running regular Club Shows. The first two competitions are booked in for 18th November and 9th December. To find out more visit www.coombelands-equestrian.co.uk.

Club Show Dates 29th October – Hall Place, Berkshire 3rd November – Grove Farm, Oxfordshire 18th November – Coombelands Equestrian, Sussex 9th December – Coombelands Equestrian, Sussex 16th December – Hall Place, Berkshire

What are Club Shows?

British Showjumping Club Shows are aimed at combinations who are new to affiliated competition and wish to use it as a stepping stone to full British Showjumping membership, although at no time does this become required (full rules and regulations should be viewed). The classes range from 70cm to 1m and so far those who have taken part have found them fun and encouraging. What is also a bit different is it allows adults to compete on ponies and children to compete on horses. It also allows for families to share horses. As long as the horse is still within the guidelines for eligibility it allows one member of the family to compete in Club shows and another member to compete in full British Showjumping Affiliated competitions. Membership for horse and rider is £30 per year, but you don’t even have to be a member to have a go. Come along to one of the shows and see if you think the Club Leagues are for you. If they are, sign up within two weeks and any points you won at the show will count towards your total. At the end of the season the points in the eight different sections will be added up and those at the top of the leader board will be invited to the Localrider Magazine sponsored Championship Show at Wellington Riding. For more information visit www.britishshowjumping.co.uk or call 02476 698812 This combination were pictured competing at the 2012 Championship Show held at Wellington Riding in September. ADVERTORIAL The new 60m x 30m outdoor school complete with a full set of affiliated Jump for Joy jumps

Petley Wood Equestrian Centre W

ith the recent addition of a 30m x 60m outdoor school, complete with a full set of Jump for Joy jumps, Petely Wood Equestrian Centre is looking forward to a winter of clinics and competitions as well as allowing riders to hire their facilities for training and schooling. Petely Wood Equestrian Centre is a friendly, family-run Equestrian Centre, located in the heart of the East Sussex countryside, yet only minutes away from the historic town of Battle.

The indoor school has had a new waxed surface and is available to hire for training and events

Facilities for hire

The new 30m x 60m school has a wax surface specifically mixed by Peter Miller to appeal to both show jumpers and dressage riders and there are dates in place for both show jumping and dressage shows over the winter with Championship Shows for both disciplines in April. The range of jumps also includes Jump for Joy cross country fences and the arena with the full set of fences is available to hire privately by the hour. There are also clear round show jumping classes every other Monday. Traditionally run as a riding school, the family has invested in the centre, also adding a new waxed surface to the already fabulous indoor school, which is also available to hire.

The Riding School

The riding School caters for all ages and abilities from the age of three upwards. There are opportunities to hack around 200 acres of ancient woodland, learn to jump as well as take part in competitions. Petley Wood is an approved Pony Club Centre and BHS approved exam centre, with an impressive 100% success rate.

Learn to ride side saddle

Proprietor, Julie Padmore and her daughters, Danielle and Nicole are looking to the future and have put the foundations in place for a wonderful competition centre, with a wide range of clinics and events with trainers such as Muriel Amble, Penny Sangster, Lynn Russell and Katie Jerram. They are also offering the opportunity for already established riders to learn to ride side saddle on trained schoolmasters, with tuition from Anna Levy.

Livery

Petley Wood offers both Working and Full/Competition livery. Facilities are ideal with three schools (one indoor), Monarch horse walker, 200 acres of ancient woodland, with hills for fittening work as well as cross country fences. The wonderful thing about Petley Wood is the family and their regular trainers provide a wealth of experience across all disciplines. Nicole has produced show cobs to Horse of the Year Show level, Danielle show jumps and event rider Penny Sangster is at Petley Wood at least once a week. Unique packages can be provided for livery owners who require their horses to be schooled and trained in specific disciplines.

Many people are now considering having their horses’ shoes removed

Hoof boots may be used during the transition process from shod to bare

B

arefoot hoofcare as a management regime is definitely on the increase – you only have to look at the liveries at your yard, browse the equestrian discussion forums, or ask your hoofcare professional for their opinion, to see that many more people are now considering having their horses’ shoes removed. Obviously this is something that as barefoot hoofcare advocates, we are delighted about. What’s great is that this now isn’t a practice considered as ‘alternative’, as it was perhaps five years ago in the UK – it is a realistic, practical, welfare-focussed method of managing equines’ health and welfare that works for almost all horses. In the few cases where it isn’t deemed a success, the failure can usually be attributed to a factor on the owner’s part, usually related to the time required to help the horse rehabiliate and make the transition, or factors relating to diet or management (for example, excess periods spent in stable confinement on soiled bedding, or a diet too high in sugars and starches.)

Beautiful bare - Barefoot hoofcare works for almost all horses

National Barefoot Hoofcare Survey!

We have launched The Barefoot Hoofcare Survey, and would be delighted if you could complete the survey – it takes just a few minutes, and we invite owners of both shod and unshod horses to take part. You have until 31st Dec 2012 to complete the survey and one lucky recipient will be drawn from EACH survey to win a £50 voucher to spend at online equestrian store, www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk. For owners of barefoot horses: visit: surveymonkey. com/s/LV9HW5F For owners of shod horses: visit: surveymonkey.com/s/LDDSH56 We are confident the results of our survey will give us a greater understanding of the issues concerning barefoot hoof care in the UK.

FAQs

There’s no easy answer to many of the questions fielded to barefoot advocates about having their horses’ shoes removed. For example, ‘How long will it take before my horse performs as well barefoot as he did in horse shoes?’ The answer is that he may exceed his performance in metal shoes immediately, or it may take as much as a year for him to rehabilitate and grow strong, functional bare hooves; of course, it may take even longer – it depends entirely on the duration of time the horse was shod for previously, the condition of his feet, his dietary health, his workload, his breed and conformation, and the owner’s available resources. Another common question is, ‘Will my horse be able to cope with roadwork without horse shoes?’ The answer is again dependant on the aforementioned factors – although of course, hoof boots can be used during the transitionary phase, and also in the long term if required, to offer shock absorption and protection from excess wear. Here are some of the benefits that we believe are afforded by ‘going bare’: • A more sure-footed horse that slips less on tarmac, and has natural grip on surfaces including grass. • Fewer lameness issues. Barefoot horses are said to experience less issues associated with poor circulation and concussive forces, for example. • The hoof can perform as nature intended, with its natural shock absorption properties and circulation-boosting benefits. • There are none of the issues related to horse shoes that arise from metal being nailed into a living, breathing structure. Headshaking in horses: the latest theories By Stephen Biddlecombe of Equine Management Headshaking is one of the most complex and least understood equine conditions seen by horse owners. A variety of causes are often cited – here are the industry’s latest theories:

A neurological cause

Prof Derek Knottenbelt MRCVS says headshaking is a neurological disease, as opposed to a behavioural issue. He states that damage to part of a major sensory nerve to the skin of the face (including the muzzle and ears), the eyes, teeth, sinuses and nasal cavity is the most likely cause of headshaking. He states that many headshakers show the signs only during a particular time of year; seasonality can be explained by the occurrence of trigger factors such as pollen, insects, dust, warmth, cold, rain or wind. Light has also been suggested as a cause, but this is now largely discredited, according to Derek – however other experts still cite photic-headshaking, whereby light stimulates the fifth cranial nerve, the trigeminal nerve, as a cause. Derek advocates veterinary assessment and medical treatment.

A new bitting solution for headshakers? The new Bomber Blue range from Bombers Bits has gone through extensive research and development, resulting in a NEW type of mouthpiece that is completely unique, offering a brand new alternative to vulcanite bits. The range is popular with owners of horses that are prone to headshaking,

Blood vessel damage

A UK-based company called Equiwinner believes that blood vessel damage is linked to headshaking – the company maintains that blood vessel damage in the skin, at the level where both nerves and blood vessels surround the hair bulb, can trigger equine headshaking. They state that the first action to be taken is to return the blood pressure to normal, and Damage to believe that a supplementary product that nerves linked promotes normal circulation is the key. Next, to the face is they advocate management and training by associated with the owner that allows damaged blood vessels headshaking and nerves around the hair bulbs of the head and neck to heal, and allows the horse to work comfortably.

Other factors

Other experts believe that headshaking can be caused by physical issues such as uncomfortable tack, a resistance to training, stress, learned ‘bad’ behaviour, allergies and even reactions to vaccinations. Headshaking has also been described as a learned stereotypic behaviour, in the same way that crib biting triggers the release of endorphins in the animal’s brain – headshaking is said by some theorists to have a similar effect. Some horse owners believe that headshaking is linked to resistance to certain bit materials, particularly metal bits, or the type of pressure put on the tongue and parts of the mouth.

Which is true?

So, what is the right answer – what is the cause of headshaking? As with many multifactorial equine conditions, it is likely there are multiple causes. Work with your instructor, and vet if required, to help identify the cause. Make sure you have eliminated factors such as ill fitting tack or a bit that is not suited to your horse’s mouth conformation. See if the horse displays the headshaking when lunged without a bridle, saddle or bit, to help identify trigger factors or causes.

The outer material used in Bomber Blue bits was discovered while searching for an alternative to vulcanite bits; it promotes salivation and as a result gives the horse a softer mouth. The material is made from a strong, rubber-nylon compound. The Bomber Blue material is moulded around a stainless steel core, which serves a number of purposes. It increases the strength of the mouthpiece and removes the possible weak points created where the cheek pieces attach. Extensive laboratory testing reveals the superior longevity and strength of this mouthpiece. The shape of the mouthpiece is based on the Bombers Bits popular Happy Tongue bit – the range of bits is ported for tongue relief, and is available with your choice of cheek piece. Prices from £78.95 for a loose ring. Call 01825 840002 for regional stockists or visit http://bombersbits.co.uk to order. The Bomber Blue range is ported for tongue relief.

The rubbernylon compound in these bits is moulded around a stainless steel core.

Leading UK specialist equine insurer, Petplan Equine has teamed up with problem horse trainer and behaviourist Michael Peace to help horse owners across the UK understand their horse’s unique personality so they can get the best out of the relationship.

M

ichael, who top jockey Frankie Dettori once called ‘the curer’, is renowned for his exceptional training methods which quickly teach problem horses that there is a better path. Michael works with every type of horse, from native ponies to thoroughbreds and warmbloods. Over the years he has learnt that just like people, horses have different temperaments and personalities, and this can determine how they respond to certain situations. to help owners discover more about their own horse, Michael alongside Petplan equine, has devised a horse personality test, which is a selection of multiple choice questions that help you work out your horse’s character and how to train him accordingly. the test is now available on the Petplan equine Facebook page. Petplan equine welcomes this association as the specialist insurer’s Head of Marketing, isabella von Mesterhazy explains: “At Petplan equine we know that much of the enjoyment of horse ownership is derived from a harmonious relationship between an owner and their horse. By joining forces with Michael Peace, one of the most exceptional horsemen in Britain, we hope this will give horse owners more knowledge about their horse’s specific personality. While the quiz is meant to be fun, the underlying message is serious - all horses are individuals and it’s important to understand them to enable a safe and effective relationship.” Michael is passionate about creating a better harmony between horses and their handlers through greater understanding. “the first thing i do, is work out where the horse is in life and then i can adapt my training techniques to suit each individual horse,” Michael explains. “Like us, horses are products of their genetic heritage and their cumulative life experiences which determine their characters and how they interact with other horses and people alike.” So, if you want to find out if your horse is more of a worrier than a cocky sort, or perhaps he’s lacking inspiration, take part in Michael Peace’s Horse personality test, by visiting the Petplan equine Facebook page www.facebook.com/PetplanequineUK

FEATURE

Full circle

By showjumper and riding instructor Michaela Huntington

Lunging the young or inexperienced horse is a great way to help develop his balance, confidence and paces. Here, we go through the basics of lunging. Equipment

There is a wide range of lunging equipment – it’s good to know what is available and what your best options are for the particular horse you will be schooling. You can use your own snaffle bridle, minus the reins and martingale, or the other alternative to lunging without a bit is to use a lunging cavesson. A lunging rein (approx 7 metres) and correct whip is also essential, together with gloves to avoid friction to your hands. A point of extreme importance is that you should never attempt any lunging exercises without wearing a well-fitting riding hat and correct footwear, i.e jodhpur or riding boots. A roller and a saddle will have their time and place as you progress. If your horse accepts the bit with no problems, a snaffle bridle is ideal for use when lunging. There are three ways that you can attach your lunge line to the bit: 1. Attach the rein to the inside ring of the bit on the direction you are going. 2. Feed your lunge line through the inside ring of the bit and attach the rein to the outside ring, thus the lunge rein will act like a curb chain. 3. Feed your lunge line through the inside ring of the bit and over the top of the horse’s head attaching the rein to the outside ring giving you some poll pressure.

Be safe with the RS-tor Top: There are various training gadgets available for the established horse, but young or inexperienced horses need only the equipment described here. Above: Riding instructor Michaela Huntington, pictured right, is a fan of lunge work for inexperienced horses On all of the above, the equipment has to be reversed when you change the rein. On a young, inexperienced horse it would be wise to select the first option. Prevention being better than cure, it would be advisable to use brushing boots fore and rear, and a pair of over-reach boots.

Getting started

When you begin lunging, your young horse should be good to lead, so begin by leading him from his left as usual, around your lunging area on the circle that he will be following. Your best tool is your voice and train him to understand your voice commands to stand and walk on, always praising him when he gets it right. When he is happy and relaxed, start to distance yourself a little from him, face him and step sideways to begin with, walking within your own smaller circle; a triangle will form with you at the apex, your left hand with the rein, your right guiding the whip behind him. Your aim is to be at the centre of his circle whilst on your own very small one. Once walk is well established, ask for halt using your voice and a little extra pressure on the rein contact. The transitions of walkhalt-walk must be the first command to be fully established on both reins. Your horse must be trained to stand on the lunge and

If you are lunging a horse with a rider, consider putting an RS-tor rider safety aid onto the saddle. The young or inexperienced horse in particular may be unpredictable, and the product will provide added security for the rider. The RS-tor attaches to the saddle bars and is held in the hand unobtrusively. For more established horse and rider combinations, or if you want to work on the rider’s position on a safe horse, the RS-tor is great if the rider is working without reins, as it provides a balancing strap. The rider can hold the RS-tor without utilising the reins, or interfering with the horse’s way of going. Visit www.rstor.co.uk wait for his next command. It is NOT good practise to allow him to walk towards you at any time. Even when the session is over, he must remain standing on his circle, and you will walk to him to praise and lead out. Once your walk and halt transitions are well-established, you can confidently ask for trot, using your voice and whip to encourage, praising each time he learns and responds correctly.

Maintaining the Skin over Winter he horse’s skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body, providing a barrier between the horse and its environment and providing protection from physical, chemical and microbiologic injury. A multi-functional organ, life would not be possible without skin, and therefore its maintenance is vital, especially over the winter months. The Main Functions of the Skin: • A barrier to the external environment • To maintain an internal environment • To provide shape and form and to allow movement • To produce glands and keratinized structures e.g. hair, hoof • Temperature regulation • To act as a reservoir for electrolytes, water, vitamins, protein etc. • An indicator of general health or illness/disease • Sensory perception, e.g. heat, cold, pain, pressure, touch etc. • Vitamin D production • Facilitate secretion from sweat and sebaceous glands • Defence from physical, chemical and microbial invasion Pigmentation. In a practical sense the skin function of most relevance to horse owners is its ability to indicate general health and to alert us to possible disease or illness. If the skins function of acting as a physical barrier is compromised (e.g. by a cut) then this allows chemical or microbial invasion which could lead to health problems. This is how the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis causes mud fever; by invading the underlying tissue which is usually protected by the skin barrier. To maintain a healthy skin there are lots of things that need careful consideration, below is a list of basic factors effecting skin health in the winter: • Weather Exposure – In the winter provide adequate shelter and protection for horses when they are turned out. For horses that are prone to mud fever, limit exposure to muddy or wet conditions if possible, if not then use a barrier cream or fit protective leg wear. • Hygiene – Keep the skin and hair as clean and dry as possible, a dirty damp coat provides the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Horses prone to mud fever may benefit from regular treatments with an anti-bacterial cleansing wash such as Activ Wash®. • Washing – continually washing and bathing horses can weaken the skin structure removing essential oils. This can lead to the skin becoming chapped and sore and irritated by external factors (e.g. particles of soil or rugs), leaving it more susceptible to infection. Avoid excessive bathing during winter; grooming will remove dirt and scurf without stripping the coat of its natural oils. • Nutritional Support – poor diets, especially those lacking in essential vitamins and minerals, can have dire effects on skin health making horses more susceptible to bacterial invasion. Consult an equine nutritionist if you suspect current dietary intake is not aiding a healthy skin and coat. • Vigilance – check horses daily for signs that skin conditions may be imminent. Any trauma to the skin (e.g. a small cut) will provide an easy route for bacteria to enter putting horses at a greater risk. • Clipping and Trimming – Clipping or trimming excessive hair (e.g. feathers on the legs) may help to prevent a build up of mud around areas susceptible to skin conditions. However it is not advisable to clip legs out completely as there will be no hair to provide protection.

Over winter it is important to check the skin carefully on a regular basis. The most common components of equine skin disease to look out for are: pruritus (itching dermatoses), hair loss (alopecic dermatoses), scaling and crusting (dry/flaking dermatoses), weeping and seeping (moist dermatoses), alterations in pigmentation and nodular lesions (skin-thickening dermatoses). Adopting the philosophy of ‘prevention is better than cure’ together with being prepared to deal with common winter skin ailments should ensure you get through the worst of the winter weather with a healthy horse. Contact your veterinary surgeon if a skin problem has appeared for the first time so that a correct diagnosis can be given. Treatment will not be effective without a confirmed diagnosis. Robinson Animal Healthcare has a wide range of quality products suitable for treating skin problems, including the antibacterial Activ Wash® and Animalintex®. Puncture Wounds

Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM MRCVS of The Arundel Equine Hospital

E

veryone knows when to call the vet for large severe looking wounds, making a judgment as to whether veterinary attention is needed for smaller seemingly innocuous wounds can be a little bit more challenging. It is often the small deep puncture wounds that can be the most injurious and life threatening. Foreign material in fetlock joint Often puncture wounds are caused by bits of fencing or hedging material and in some instances fragments of foreign material can be left within the soft tissues.

Wounds in the lower limbs

Puncture wounds involving the lower limbs from the carpus and hock down are most worrying. The primary reason for this is that the anatomy of the limb is such that there are multiple joints and tendon sheaths that are very close to the skin surface. The lower limb comprises bone, tendons and ligaments with very little muscle tissue to act as a protective barrier, this means that often wounds lower down on the limb can involve a joint or sheath. The significance of this is that such penetrations can introduce infection into these very sensitive structures. Often bits of mud and plant material are

introduced into the joint or sheath, without the surgical removal of such foreign material any infection and subsequent inflammation will never be controlled with antibiotics alone.

To clip or not to clip?

Often we are presented with an acutely lame horse that does not appear to have sustained a wound, however it has had a black thorn penetration into a joint or tendon sheath. This Arthroscopy is a common occurrence in the to treat a carpal wound winter months when riders are jumping blackthorn hedges. For this reason it is important at the end of a day’s hunting, or following a cross country schooling session the horse’s limbs are carefully checked for evidence of blackthorn penetration. There is a debate about whether hunters should have their legs fully clipped, some say the hair can act as a form of protection, others say it makes it harder to see where the thorn pricks have been. Wire wounds at the back of the pastern where horses have struck out with their foot through wire are a serious risk as well. The flexor tendon sheath runs down the back of the fetlock from about two thirds of the way down the canon bone to just above the heal bulbs. At the back of the pastern the tendon sheath is very superficial below the skin and is easily penetrated. This is sheath is often injured when riding through mud or over stony ground. Both the carpus and hock not only comprise several joints they also have a complex arrangement of tendon sheaths around them. It is not uncommon for one of these sheaths to be punctured. Jumping hedges exposes the horse’s carpal joints to penetration more as the joints flex to jump the hedge they are opened up increasing the chance of puncture.

Standing on a nail

Puncture wounds can also occur to the hoof itself, usually from the solar surface upwards by standing on a sharp object such as a nail. These penetrations can be severely damaging in that they can enter either the coffin joint or the navicular bursar within the hoof. When deciding whether to call the vet to attend a small puncture wound think about where the lesion is in relation to the joints and tendon sheaths, it is never worth taking a chance as prompt intervention can save a horse’s life. First aid measures should include carefully clipping the hair from around the wound and then vigorously hosing the wound in an attempt to wash any foreign material out as well as any bacterial contamination. Then apply an antibiotic cream or spray of some sort and where possible apply a dressing to prevent further contamination.

Checking the joint fluid

Veterinary assessment will involve a careful evaluation of the wound in relation to the anatomy of the limb, where appropriate samples from joints or sheaths may be obtained by placing a needle in an aseptic manner into the structure and harvesting some of the synovial fluid from within. Often a visual assessment of the fluid can reveal that there is significant inflammation, if in doubt the sample is submitted to a laboratory to see what the white cell counts and protein levels are. If there is a chance that the wound has contaminated a joint or sheath, then the patient will be hospitalised and undergo keyhole surgery, arthroscopy or tenoscopy. This allows the inside of the joint or sheath to be visualised and any foreign material removed, the structure is then lavaged with copious amounts of sterile saline antibiotics. Often puncture wounds are left open to drain rather than being stitched. Dressings are applied and antibiotics prescribed, to prevent infection. The Checking the joint fluid – the sample tetanus vaccination status on the right is from infected joint should also be checked.

First Aid Essentials

The trouble with accidents is you never know what is going to happen. That is why it is essential you regularly check your first aid kit, to ensure you have all the vital pieces of kit and everything is in date and freshly replenished. Here are a few extra things you might like to consider keeping in your first aid box. Heel to Hoof

Magnetic Leg Wraps

The Harpley equestrian magnetic Leg Wraps are made in england, from a high quality knitted Warmwick fabric which wicks moisture away and keeps the body at an even temperature. The velcro straps keep the leg wraps firmly in place and the wraps are shaped to sit comfortably and snugly under the fetlock where protection and drying is needed. There are six ‘rare earth’ neodymium magnets encapsulated in the fabric. These high strength magnets will increase localised blood circulation, warming the area and widening the blood vessels. This helps the absorption of oxygen into the blood which brings nutrients, removes toxins and stimulates the body to heal itself by its own natural healing ability. This superb product has all the benefits of magnetic therapy as well as wicking properties which helps dry the legs and prevent mud fever. £55.50 per pair Call 0115 9611537 or visit www.harpleyequestrian.co.uk AFTER BOX REST Anything other than minor injury is likely to require box rest. Having changed the horse’s diet and care routine the next step is to think ahead. Moving from box rest to full work requires careful planning and orchestration. The likelihood is that some muscle wastage and stiffness will result from the inactivity. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says: “Walking out is a sensible starting point then lunging can be built into the régime. It is surprising how much can be achieved lunging in walk initially. By making use of the long sides of the arena and incorporating bending and stretching most horses can be rehabilitated easily. A good lunge aid like the EquiAmi encourages horses to track up and stretch over their backs. This increases flexibility and tightens the abdominal muscles whilst promoting wither lift. Always following veterinary advice you can work the horse once or twice a day gradually increasing the amount and intensity of work until full mobility and suppleness return. In order to increase the activity of the hind limbs some pole work can be included which also helps to prevent boredom.

Feed news

Wave goodbye to

winter feeding worries By Clare Barfoot RNutr, SPILLERS® Nutritionist

W

inter can present horse owners with many challenges from lack of turnout to reduced riding opportunities, however being prepared with your winter feed can at least reduce the stress of having an underweight horse or one that is bouncing off the walls!

Managing weight loss

Weight loss is most common at this time of year; usually it’s caused by an increase in energy requirements due to the drop in temperature and a decline in the grass quality. Energy requirements can increase by up to 30% during the winter months so your horse’s diet has to be adapted to take this into account. Any sudden unexplained weight loss should be investigated by your vet; though there are some checks you can do yourself. Make sure your worming programme is up to date and your horse’s teeth are regularly checked. If he is elderly or clipped make sure he is warm enough; a cold horse will use significantly more energy trying to keep warm. The next thing to check is the quality and quantity of forage you are feeding. Good quality forage should be provided ad lib if you are trying to put weight on your horse. Remember to feed a greater weight of haylage than hay; up to 1.5 times as much haylage may be necessary to ensure that your horse gets enough fibre. If your horse or pony is a shy forage feeder try adding a chopped fibre, such as dried grass or a hay replacer. If you are feeding less than the recommended weight of a low energy mix or cube try increasing this up to the recommended level. If this doesn’t improve condition in a few weeks the next step is to move up to a conditioning feed. Conditioning feeds are higher in energy and therefore calories, higher in protein

to help build muscle mass and topline and usually have a higher level of micronutrients to support optimum condition and health. Adding in a conditioning chopped fibre will also increase calorie and protein intake.

warm. Only clipped ponies should need rugging well. In fact some natives can even be belly clipped without being rugged up tough love I know but it will be beneficial in the long run.

Keeping them sane!

Laminitics

If you have a horse with a sharp temperament, try to reduce the starch level in the diet. Starch from cereals is known as a “quick release” energy source whereas oil and fibre are often described as “slow release” energy sources that help to reduce the risk of excitability. Oil is particularly useful when trying to build condition as it contains approx. 2.5 times the energy of cereals. Therefore, look for medium energy feeds based on fibre and oil, but note they may not always say conditioning on the bag!

Good doers

Winter is a great opportunity to slim down your good doer. Ponies, particularly, have evolved to put on condition in the summer months and live off these reserves during the winter. This natural fluctuation in condition may also help maintain a healthy metabolism, reducing the risk of laminitis in the spring. Many native ponies and cobs can winter out quite happily and in mild winters may not even need extra forage. However, whatever the winter conditions bring, it is very important to provide a balanced diet and in the case of good doers this is best supplied with a low calorie balancer. Balancers are packed full of nutrients that will balance a forage only diet without providing unnecessary calories. Many also incorporate other beneficial functional ingredients such as glucosamine. Don’t be tempted to pile on the rugs for overweight ponies as this will only stop them from burning as many calories to keep themselves

For horses and ponies prone to laminitis the aim is to keep them on the slim side. Make sure you have your forage source analysed for WSC (water soluble carbohydrates) and choose hay or haylage of ideally less than 10% WSC. Soaking hay for 16 hours (overnight) in tepid water will help maximise the leaching of WSC but there is no guarantee that this can make all hays safe, so in very sensitive animals it is best to get an analysis done.

Stabled horses

Stabling horses especially for long periods, comes with its own challenges. To help keep your horse’s respiratory system healthy always use good quality forage, soak your hay for 10-20 minutes or use haylage. A good quality respiratory supplement may also help. Make sure where appropriate that ad lib forage is provided as this will reduce the risk of gastric ulcers, colic and tying up and will also help reduce stress. Daily turnout even if in a manège should be provided as this will help keep your horse calm when ridden and also help keep the digestive system healthy by expelling any excess gas! Whatever type of horse or pony you have it pays to be prepared. If you need any help with your winter feeding queries please call the SPILLERS Care-line on 01908 226626.

Winter Feeding

By keeping your horse warm and dry you will be helping to maintain condition over the cold winter months. Depending on the type of horse you own and the work you do with him, you may need to adjust his diet accordingly. Over the following pages we look at some of the feed options available to keep your horse in peak condition this winter. Specialist Diet with Solution Mash Containing under 1% total sugar but with 150gm of oil in every 1kg Solution Mash is designed for poor doers that suffer from a starch and sugar intolerance such as Laminitis, Cushing’s, Insulin Resistance and EPSM. The high levels of oils backed up with additional nutrients including super high levels of Vitamin E help ensure efficient oil utilisation, encouraging conditioning and controlled weight gain. This combined with a 26% fibre level and added Yeasacc 1026 helps support slow rates of digestion throughout the hind gut, for optimum fibre and mineral digestion. Fully balanced in essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements and with added herbs spearmint, garlic and fenugreek Solution Mash is ideal to feed this winter to help keep your horse in good condition. For more information contact Rowen Barbary Horse Feeds on 01948 880598 or visit www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Saracen Winter Feeds Forage alone will not meet a horse’s vitamin and mineral requirements, and in some cases, will not meet energy requirements for the work being done or to maintain body condition in the winter. Concentrate feeding will be necessary but your choice of feed may be the difference between having a sensible, quiet horse, or one that never has four feet on the ground! Look for feeds that provide the energy in the form of digestible fibre sources and higher oil levels. These both provide slow release energy ideal for stabled horses over the winter. Saracen Cooling Mix plus Herbs is an oat-free, non heating mix formulated with the optimum balance of digestible fibres and oil for sustained energy release. For those that are good doers or in light work feed balancers such as Saracen Essential Balancer ensure a balanced diet, at a cost effective price point. Make sure that you are feeding the manufacturers recommended feeding amounts to ensure optimum nutrient intake. www.saracenhorsefeeds.com

TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes TOPSPEC Super Conditioning Flakes are full of naturally oil-rich ingredients and are very palatable. ‘Naturally oil-rich ingredients’ contain intracellular oil which is oil that occurs with the cells of a plant. Feeding intracellular oil in a very palatable and highly-available way of providing oil in the diet. These calories are balanced with high quality soya as a protein source and with available sources of calcium and salt added. TopSpec Super Conditioning Flakes improve condition, provide balanced calories and protein for performance, provide a balance of fast-releasing energy with oil for stamina and reduce the weight of current hard feed intake without reducing performance or condition.

They are particularly beneficial for show horses and ponies, bloodstock being prepared for sales, hard working horses that need high levels of calories without excessively large feeds and elderly horses that struggle to maintain condition, particularly in winter. For free nutritional advice please contact the Multiple Award-Winning Helpline on (01845) 565030 or visit www.topspec.com

The HAYGAIN Hay Steamer Hay is undoubtedly the most ideal forage for your horse this winter. Its only flaw is the dust spores which can cause respiratory problems. So remove the spores and you have the perfect forage for any horse, even those with allergies or intolerances! All HAYGAIN hay steamers are scientifically proven to clean hay by killing all spores. It is a fully insulated unit with a unique function enabling steam to penetrate the centre of the bale, releasing steam which defuses outwards, ensuring the entire bale is steamed at the critically necessary temperatures (in excess of 100°C throughout). The unit is specifically designed to take an entire strung hay bale, but if required can also be used with hay nets or wedges of hay. It is very robust and easy to maintain. The steamed hay is ready to feed in approximately 50 minutes and retains its complete nutritional value and goodness. HAYGAIN steamed hay is warm, sweet smelling and palatable. Research indicates it is effective at encouraging fussy eaters. For further information please contact HAYGAIN hay steamers on (0333) 200 5233 or visit www.haygain.co.uk

The Hay Bar Remedy Hay Bar has proved itself in many different ways. Feeding from the floor has long been the ideal method as it helps to maintain horses in the natural way. This helps to ensure that there are less respiratory, dental and physio problems. All of which can prove to be costly. Running costs for any yard large or small are becoming a serious problem. Forage prices are rising higher and higher and we all have to try to find ways of becoming more efficient and more economical. Waste forage and bedding is another unwanted expense. Hay Bar helps to ensure that forage and bedding are not mixed and this helps the horse to get full benefit from what he is fed. Labour costs are rising all the time and so it is important that time is well spent. Filling hay nets is no-one’s favourite occupation and it is incredibly time consuming. Both hay and haylage fed from either a wheelbarrow or a sheet into a Hay Bar is much quicker and so much easier. It is also much safer as there is not the worry of horses getting hung up in nets. For more information call Tel: 01723 882 434 or visit www.haybar.co.uk

The key to condition

“I started using Original in May this year and my horse looks fantastic. “I feed Blue Chip Original to ensure that my ponies are having all the nutrition they need to keep them in top condition. Healthy from the inside, shows on the outside; they have strong feet, glossy coats, a healthy gut and an all-round air of vitality and well-being.”

“I have used many balancers over the years with horses and I’ve never found one which ticks all the boxes until I purchased Blue Chip Original for my TB dressage mare. Her coat is shinier and she is calmer in the arena. I would never use another feed balancer.”

Vetted Clear The 4count season pack, four tests pre-paid for in a handy zipped wallet, order now and be ready for 2013.

Clear to take on the competition. Naturally Guaranteed.

Winter Worming As winter approaches it’s time to think about worming your horse. You may have done very little actual worming if your regular worm count results have been consistently good. It’s great to know that your horse has a low parasite status and that all your efforts in poo picking are worthwhile! However, winter is the time of year when we must face up to the limitations of worm counting and be sure to worm for encysted redworm and tapeworm.

Respirator Boost is not a medicinal product. It is powerful natural formula.

Most important is the hidden stage of redworm when this parasite can remain dormant in the gut wall. The worms are not mature, not laying eggs. These can be present in any horse but are particularly likely to affect the newcomer with an unknown worming history or in any horse or pony who has ever had a significant worm burden. Redworm can remain encysted for months or even years and can cause problems in the spring if they suddenly emerge en masse. Don’t be too worried though because your well cared for horse, with a good worm count record is very unlikely to carry such a large burden.

If you need a product to help maintain your horse's breathing

The winter worming dose should be targeted at treating this parasite. There are only two drugs licenced to do this job, moxidectin (Equest) or five days of fenbendazole (Panacur). The combined product Equest Pramox will also treat tapeworm at the same time MW you 0101will Hunter ad v3:Vis 16/10/2012 Page and be ready to return to worm15:10 counts next1time.

If you need a breathing product legal under competition rules

www.westgatelabs.co.uk

If your horse's stable gets dusty If you feed regular quantities of dry forage If your hay is of poor quality

The solution is Respirator Boost

Respirator Boost is a unique solution to naturally support healthy breathing. It’s so good it comes with a 48 hour full money back guarantee*.
