Welcome

t has been wonderful to see so many of you out and about at spring shows and competitions. And for those we haven’t been able to attend in person we have been able to keep up to date with results as they happen through social media technology, which is almost as good as being there. Even though the last month has flown by, it seems ages since I was sitting at my desk writing my letter for the April issue. I have had a wonderful time since then. I have visited Laura Bechtolsheimer at her yard in Cirencester, where I had the opportunity to watch her ride Mistral Hojris (Alf), her 2011 European Team Gold and Individual Bronze, winning horse. We have also had two office outings to the races. The first was to Lingfield on 24th March, where the team horse (the one we chose), Premio Loco ridden by George Baker, stretched for the line to take the Blue Square Winter Derby. We chose him as he looked so similar to Frank, the horse I ride at LMEQ. It may sound a strange way to pick a winner, but it has been our most successful choice in a while. Unfortunately we weren’t quite so successful at Ascot, when we were invited to the Countryside Family Raceday. However, we had enormous fun, particularly cheering on Surrey Union Master, Alice Dunsdon, who was taking part in the Countryside Alliance Charity Race. She was riding Princely Hero, trained by Chris Gordon, formerly of Mark Cross, who is now based in Winchester. There have been so many wonderful events to include in this issue and I hope you enjoy reading about them, as much as I have whilst working on this issue. As we look forward to May, things get busier. There are definite trips to Badminton, Royal Windsor Horse Show, Golden Cross Derby Show, plus lots of other shows and events. Whatever you are doing with your horse this summer Good Luck and have fun! Premio Loco and George Baker, pictured after winning the Blue Square Winter Derby

Visit Nick Skelton’s yard and meet his horses! Would you like to visit Nick Skelton’s yard and meet his top horses? Saddle Up for Spinal Research are inviting riders to run a fundraising event for them, so you can do just that. The event can include anything from a showing show or dressage competition to an equine car boot sale or sponsored ride. The event organiser that raises the most awareness for the charity or is the most creative with their fundraising will be invited (with a friend) to visit Nick Skelton’s yard and have a professional photograph taken with his two top potential Olympic horses Carlo and Big Star. The Saddle Up campaign for Spinal Research is a charity that Nick is very passionate about following his horrific fall in 2000, which resulted in him breaking his neck. Nick was forced to retire from show jumping after being told he would never be able to ride again. However in 2002 following a scan of the ligaments in his neck, he was incredibly fortunate to be told that he could ride again, but not fall off! Nick is appealing to riders on behalf of Saddle Up for Spinal Research to raise money for the charity’s excellent work. They are funding projects to restore movement and sensation to people who are paralysed – by giving them the life changing ability to breathe again or to use their hands; and one day they may even be able to ride again. To be in with a chance of being chosen to be photographed by B72 Imaging in Coventry, with Big Star and Carlo you will need to run your event and send in the money raised by 29th June 2012. To request a fundraising pack and entry form please telephone Isabel Long on 01483 898786 or email Isabel@spinalresearch.org.”

Equilibrium Products sponsors Jonathan Paget Equilibrium Products has sponsored New Zealand event rider and Olympic hopeful Jonathan Paget. 28-year-old Jonathan ‘Jock’ Paget has qualified two horses for London 2012 and hopes to add a third. Originally a bricklayer, Jonathan didn’t start riding until he was 18. From the age of 20, Jonathan spent three years working for Kevin McNab in Queensland, Australia and quickly progressed to competing at three-star eventing. After returning to Sydney for a year to set up his own business producing and competing horses, Jonathan was then offered a job to ride for Frances Stead at the Clifton Eventers based in Muriwai, New Zealand. In September 2007 he became their principal rider for three years and went on to compete in the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010 finishing in seventh place on Clifton Promise. Jonathan then moved to the UK to Joe Giannamore’s yard in Dunsfold, Surrey to prepare for the Olympics. Jonathan says, “Event horses train hard and compete hard! I believe it’s important to give them the best leg protection possible which is why we use TriZone Airlite boots for ultimate protection in a lightweight breathable boot”. www.EquilibrimProducts.com

Sefton Passes onto Greener Pastures at The Horse Trust The Horse Trust is very sad to report that ex Household Cavalry, Sefton was quietly put to sleep at the sanctuary on Tuesday 27th March. Sefton, who was retired from the Household Cavalry, Knightsbridge to the charity’s Home of Rest for Horses based in Speen, Buckinghamshire in 2005 will be missed by all the staff and visitors to the sanctuary. Sefton was proud to bear the name of his famous predecessor, the horse so badly injured in the Hyde Park Bombing on 20th July 1982 who lived at The Home of Rest for Horses for ten years until his death in 1993. Sefton suffered 37 wounds from flying metal when he was caught within yards of the explosion, cheating the terrorist bomb which claimed the lives of four soldiers and seven horses of The Household Cavalry. He will be sadly missed by everyone but particularly his groom, Kate Cutler, and his girlfriend, 15.1hh bay mare, Ruby Tuesday. Kate said, “Sefton had 2 sides to his personality. He wouldn’t harm a fly, was really placid and you could do anything with him, but when he saw Ruby he would shoot off at speed to be by her side again.” She continued, “Towards the end when he became very poorly he was certainly not the Sefton I had come to know and love so well. He had lost that special twinkle in his eye.” www.horsetrust.org.uk april 2012 Localrider 7

British built affordable Horseboxes Based in kent Equi-Star Horseboxes is a family run business, producing quality 3.5t horseboxes at affordable prices. The most amazing thing about these horseboxes is they can be driven by anyone with a standard UK Car Licence. Karen Chaplin of Equi-Star horseboxes said: They are very popular with parents with teenage children, who have passed their driving test, as they allow the young driver to drive to events by themselves.” Everything has been thought of and with the new lighter to lift ramp they are perfect for the lady driver, travelling to events on her own. The Hermes is built to accommodate the odd over-night stay away. It has a sink and hob and can sleep two people comfortably. With so many opportunities for the amateur rider to stay away at events and championship competitions, this is a great little lorry, which is easy to drive, yet allows the flexibility to cater for oneself, whilst staying away. www.kenthorseboxes.co.uk

Equestrian Torch Bearers

S

ister Mary-Joy langdon, founder of london’s Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, is to carry the Olympic Torch on one of the final stages of its journey to the Olympic Park. The torch will be in safe hands since Sister Mary-Joy first hit the headlines when she became Britain’s first female fire-fighter in 1976. Today however, Sister Mary-Joy is renowned for her creation of the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, an inner-city community riding centre founded in 1989, particularly devoted to vulnerable children and young people, many of whom have physical, mental, social and/ or financial difficulties. Jane Holderness-Roddam also to carry the flame Jane Holderness-roddam, British Eventing’s president and former Chairman has been announced as an official Olympic Torchbearer through her local area of Shurdington on the 23rd of May 2012. as the first ever female member of the Eventing team to represent Britain at an Olympic Games at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, Jane (nee Bullen) and her ride ‘Our Nobby’ came home with Olympic Team Gold. Jane remembers her medal winning experience: “it seems incredible that it was 44 years ago that i rode at the Olympic Games in Mexico on the tiny, barely 15hh, thoroughbred Our Nobby, as the first British girl to participate in the three day event. “Nicknamed the Galloping Nurse, as i was training as a nurse at The Middlesex Hospital at the time, i joined team mates richard Meade, Derek allhusen and Ben Jones on what was undoubtedly the trip of a lifetime when we managed to bring home Team Gold and Derek’s individual Silver in 1968. Full information on the torch bearers can be found on the London 2012 website www.london2012.com

Food Crisis in the Gambia The UN Food and agriculture Organisation have declared the need for urgent support in areas of West africa, including The Gambia, due to a severe food shortage. One of the poorest countries in the world, The Gambia ranks 160th out of 179 countries in the 2007/8 UNDP Human Development report. The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in africa, surrounded on three sides by Senegal, and poverty is widespread. The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust is a small UK based charity working in The Gambia to reduce rural poverty through improving the health and welfare of working equines. This is done through a combination of veterinary services and education of animal owners and their children. a spokeswoman from the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust said: “The farming communities of The Gambia are facing real difficulties, and of course when the people suffer the animals suffer too. in order to prevent the crisis from worsening it is essential that we keep the animals healthy, so that they’re ready and able to work when hopefully the rains start again this year. if the present situation continues, the animals that survive will be in such poor condition from starvation that they will be unable to work, thus creating a downward spiral. The animals are essential to the livelihoods of Gambian farmers – without them the farmers are unable to carry out their farming duties. Malnutrition increases the risk of infection and infectious diseases, which are common in The Gambia, and is a major risk factor to humans and animals alike.”

ll roads should lead to Golden Cross Equestrian Centre for the weekend of 5th & 6th May 2012 for the ever popular Affiliated ‘Derby Show’. The show now boasts a prize fund approaching £4,000 and should attract riders from all over the South East. This is now one of the first shows of the season to run on grass as opposed to the now fashionable all weather surfaces and will give competitors an opportunity to get out before the county show circuit and Hickstead. Sunday’s classes include the Clip Clop Traders Eventers Challenge. This class is very similar to the Hickstead version in which, competitors jump a mixture of cross country fences and show jumps, with five seconds added for a fence down. Now in its fifteenth year this class has only produced nine clear rounds. As a special incentive this year in a bid to improve entries and BS membership the BS Tickets to ride will be available at no charge to competitors instead of the normal £6 per class. This will give unregistered combinations an opportunity to compete alongside registered members and give them a taster of the affiliated circuit. The show is open to the public, refreshments and tradestands are available and the full schedule and online entry facility can be found on www.goldencrossec.co.uk

A look in the lab In the last few years the way we control worms in our horses has changed. Good programmes are now based on worm counts, only adding wormers for treating encysted redworm, tapeworm and for any known wormy horses. So what happens to the sample when it arrives at the lab? There are a few different techniques for faecal egg counting. Westgate Labs use the standard ‘modified McMaster method’ using a centrifuge to recover more worm eggs. Once the post sacks arrive, the important first job is to carefully sort out and set out the samples for testing. Next they are prepared for the centrifuge by mixing with a measured amount of water, known as a ‘poo smoothie’! After a good spin the water is poured off, leaving the worm eggs and sediment in the test tube. A saturated salt solution is added so that the worm eggs float to the top and the sample can then be run out onto a double microscope slide. Once under the microscope, two counts are taken for accuracy and an average made to arrive at the final count. A quick bit of maths leads to the ‘eggs per gram’ result you receive in your report. Of course an accurate test is only the beginning of the service provided at Westgate. Four qualified advisors are available to make sure you understand the results, to talk to you about your horse and how best to control his worms, advising on wormers if need be. Changes at HOYS New Forest ponies will have stand alone HOYS qualifiers and new M&M working hunter divisions announced for 2013. After extensive research and consideration, Horse of the Year Show, the ‘World’s Most Famous Horse Show’, will be running eight stand alone qualifiers for New Forest Ponies, split away from the Connemaras, against who they usually compete. In addition, new height divisions for Mountain and Moorland Working Hunter Classes will be introduced. Both of these important changes will be implemented in 2013. Historically, New Forest Ponies have only been able to qualify for Horse of the Year Show in classes which also include Connemaras. During the past two years, there has been a significant increase in the amount of New Forest Ponies coming forward in these qualifiers, coupled with a marked rise in the number of top-quality animals. Grandstand Media Ltd, organiser of Horse of the Year Show, believes that these positive trends should be reflected in the number of New Forest Ponies being represented at the show. Therefore, from next year, there will be eight qualifiers for New Forest Ponies only, in addition to a number of qualifiers combined with Connemaras. For more information on Horse of the Year Show qualifiers, visit http://www.hoys.co.uk/competitor/competitions.php. Final details and venues for 2013 qualifiers will not be available until after this year’s show.

Eventing – the triple whammy Training the event horse is geared to produce an equine athlete that achieves high standards in three very different disciplines at the same time - what a challenge! Building up muscular strength, speed and power has to be coupled with developing balance, suppleness and agility, producing a horse who calmly meets all the challenges whilst maintaining the ability to be forward and quick-thinking. Thoroughbred horses have many of the natural characteristics required and it’s good to see more people competing retrained racehorses now. One example is Victoria Bax who events a team of ex-racehorses at several levels. Victoria now uses and endorses EquiAmi training aids as she finds they help develop the attributes that ex-racehorses lack on arrival. Getting these horses to step under from behind, come into a contact, developing balance, lift and lightness are fundamental and form the basis for progression. Victoria has found the aids beneficial for all three phases of eventing, at all levels, as the horses develop topline, engagement and strength with balance. The basics have to be right says Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi; without this progress is limited. Encouraging by suggestion and reward helps Victoria achieve results, co-operation and relaxation in her lovely horses. For more information please visit www.vbeventing.co.uk or www.equiami.com

Hector BEFORE Molly Mouse BEFORE

Two neglected laminitic ponies helped by Blue Chip and the ISPCA. “Molly Mouse hobbled into the National Animal Centre on appalling overgrown hooves. This tiny little girl was left for many years enduring the agony of laminitis and deformed hooves. Our farrier and vet recommended a diet rich in biotin but low in calories to help Molly Mouse recover from her ordeal. Blue Chip Lamilight was fed along with hay and gradually her hooves returned to normal. Molly Mouse now lives with her foster mum who continues to feed her on Blue Chip Lami-light and is delighted with the condition of her hooves and her shiny glossy coat. Laminitis has become a distant memory for this little pony as she kicks up her heels and gallops across her paddock every day.” “Hector was taken into the care of the National Animal Centre as he was suffering from acute laminitis and neglected hooves. Allowed to roam over 40 acres of fertilised grass Hector became obese and developed laminitis.

Unfortunately Hector did not receive the veterinary attention he urgently needed, nor were his hooves trimmed by a farrier for almost two years. As a result this lovely little pony endured much pain and suffering and on arrival it was feared help had come too late for him. Hector however had other ideas. He was immediately examined by our equine vet and started on a course of pain relief and anti inflammatory medication. Of course we also gradually introduced him to Blue Chip Lamilight, which he loves! Less than two weeks later Hector was off medication and sound. Our vet was astonished by the difference in him and our farrier cannot believe how quickly Hector’s neglected hooves are improving. One month later and Hector has been transformed from a crippled overweight sad little pony into a lively, fun loving chap who causes no end of mischief.” Cathy Griffin, Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA)

REGIONAL ROUNDUP

Warlingham & District Horse Club Mock Hunt Last Meet of the Season • 18th March 2012

Amanda Skinner

Words by Amanda Skinner and pictures by Sadie Whitfield Photography

or those who don’t know me, I am Amanda Skinner and I was on the very large, very excited, black horse called Sebastian. He was excited for very good reason. Last year Sebastian tore his tendon out hunting and this was his first hunt in over a year. Let me start by saying what a great morning for a hunt. The sun was out and it was lovely and warm. The turnout was fabulous with around 55 mounted riders. Mike Potts was our Field Master for this hunt and he knows his way round Warren Barn like the back of his hand. Our fox for the day was Debbie Cunningham, with her horse Honey, who is a nice quick mare. Michaela Blackburn was our Hunt Master for the hounds, with her horse Jack who is a pro at hunting. We had a further three hunt masters to keep the field in tow and help with any problems as they came up. On this occasion Michaela thought I would be better off being a hound and I was joined by four others. I always think she worries I may wipe out a few children. We set off by jumping the tyres at the bottom of the hill and then letting them have a good blast up the hill. We had a few fallers at the first jump and one grey pony appeared at the end of the line, minus his rider. We always have two vehicles following our beginners mock hunt, one with

the paramedic and one with the photographer. After the girl was checked over by our paramedic she was driven up the hill to be reunited with her pony. Once every one had had a rest, all apart from Sebastian who was still dancing, we set of into the valley, and then swept round and up the hill, chasing our fox, who was very quick. At the top of Warren Barn there is a very nice big hedge jump for the brave, we waited there and watched a few jump it. After a few minutes rest we set off again at high speed chasing our fox along the flat, which was very cleverly captured by Megan Bruces’s helmet cam, all the time we were barking like hounds. We all flew the hedge and carried on. Our next line we couldn’t do as the cows and Mr. Bull were waiting for us to try, so we came back along the flat and back over the hedge. We then made our way back to the valley where the brave could jump the drop hedge and we carried on to the water. We ended our last mock hunt of the season by chasing Debbie and Honey barking like hounds for the kill. This was our last Meet of the season, but we shall be back and we look forward to seeing you next season.

FEATURE If your saddle has uneven wool flocking, this could cause pressure points that may seriously damage the horse’s back

A saddle’s bearing surface should be even and flexible, without pressure points, in order for the horse to move comfortably and freely

Under pressure By Society of Master Saddlers qualified saddle fitter, David Kempsell, of www.wowsaddles.com

O

ne of the most interesting developments in saddle fitting in recent years is the use of pressure testing equipment. Until its development, assessment of the interaction between the horse, the saddle and the rider was done with the eye and the expertise of a saddle fitter – and in most cases, this is still the ‘norm’. However, the technology is now available to measure the dynamic pressure distribution between the saddle and the horse, and pinpoint areas of pressure that arise from poor saddle fit , which can then be corrected. Pressure testing equipment utilises a thin elastic sensor mat beneath the saddle – this sends data to recorder software operated on the computer’s Windows application, and displays synchronized video pictures that are interpreted by the user, who is always trained in the system’s use.

Objectively assessing a saddle’s fit

Showing success Susie Gillott chose a WOW as she wanted the best start for her youngster Boysie, a nowseven-year-old purebred Arabian, 16.1hh gelding. “I didn’t want to go through the hassle of numerous saddle changes in a short period of time as he matured and grew in strength and muscle. This way, I knew that my boy was comfortable and happy, and I could get on with backing then producing him with the confidence that he would never be in pain from his saddle,” she explains.

Susie Gillott wanted to produce her young Arab without impeding his development or comfort

In the UK, the Society of Master Saddlers and the British Equestrian Federation jointly own a system, while the Saddle Research Trust has a system on loan. First Thought Equine, Canterbury-based manufacturer of WOW saddles, is (to our knowledge) the only saddle manufacturer in the UK to have invested in a system of their own, and offers a saddle testing service in association with a local veterinary clinic, the Lady Dane Veterinary Centre in Kent. (Contact 01227 831614 for details.) When we introduced the Flair system in 1999, an air-bag system of flocking that is currently used in all WOW saddles, it could be described as a gamble. However, even then we knew it was important to be able to assess the amount of pressure put on a horse’s back by the saddle and rider combined. We worked with a pressure tester in Wales to design our air flocking system, and spent four years researching the project, testing the system and learning about saddle fit. The Flair system won a British Equestrian Trade Association New Product Innovation award at the trade show in 1999, and we have continued to refine and develop it. We believe that a saddle’s bearing surface should be even and flexible, without pressure points. So does the Society of Master Saddlers, stating: “Irregular, uneven or lumpy flocking can cause pressure points that may seriously damage the horse’s back. Severe irregularity in the flocking can cause the saddle to sit to one side. Over stuffed, the saddle will be hard, will not adapt to the horse’s back and may cause pressure sores or sensitivity”. We have used pressure testing to show that our flexible layer of shock absorbing air ‘flocking’ removes pressure points, and provides shock absorption for the horse when jumping or engaged in sitting trot. When it launched, the system was independently pressure tested by a Master Saddler with almost three decades’ experience, and it consistently showed that Flair demonstrated a lower average pressure on the animal’s back. In particular, with the air-flocked saddle, the amount of the time it takes for the pressure to reduce behind the horse’s shoulder after landing from a jump is reduced. We are dedicated to helping owners make their horses more comfortable, and ultimately extend their animals’ competitive lives, and look forward to the use of pressure testing equipment becoming even more commonplace in the field of saddle development. Tendon Injuries Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM(StudMed) MRCVS of The Arundel Equine Hospital

T

endons are found throughout the horse’s body, their function is to attach the muscle that is responsible for motion, to bone so that when the muscle contracts the horse moves. It is the tendons that are at the back of fore and hind limbs, below the knee and hock that we are usually referring to when we talk about tendon injuries, most people are referring to injuries involving the superficial digital flexor tendon in the forelimb, however injuries can occur to the deep digital flexor tendon, the suspensory ligament and the inferior check ligament of the fore limb and these with the exception of the inferior check ligament can all occur in the hind limb too. There are also a series of complicated tendons and ligaments below the pastern on both fore and hind limbs that can be injured. Tendon Scan in a yard

Foot balance

The predisposing factors may be poor foot conformation and balance. The balance of the foot is very important, a heel that is too high causes injury to the suspensory ligaments and the superficial digital flexor tendon, a heel that is too low causes damage to the deep digital flexor tendon. The speed the horse travels at can predispose the horse to injury of the tendons as will the height of the fences the horse jumps. These factors increase the load on the tendons hence increasing the strain. Also the surface on which the horse works can affect injury rate, hard ground seems to result in more tendon injuries, but this may be due to the increased speed the horse can achieve. Dressage horses do not move at great speed nor do they jump big fences but they still get tendon and suspensory ligament injuries. It would appear that the long slow hyper-flexion of the fetlock during advanced dressage movements damages the tendons. This may be due to the fact that the blood supply to the tendons is shut off when the tendon is under maximal stretch, this is for a longer period of time than would be normal, hence the injury occurs possibly due to periods of hypoxia.

Heating up

As the tendon cycles, loads and unloads, it gets hot due to not all the stored energy from stretch being released back in forward motion. This increase in temperature damages the tendon matrix and the tenocytes. This is why it is so important after a period of intense exercise the limbs are cooled for about 20 minutes, no more or the limb tissue will reheat due to increased blood flow. Another interesting predisposing factor for tendonitis may be the keeping of young animals too much in stables and barns in their growing and developing period before adulthood. The tendons develop in response to loading and this stops as the animal reaches maturity. Many breeding establishments barn house youngstock for long periods over the winter, this may make them miss the window of opportunity to develop good strong tendons.

Early warnings

Discipline specific injuries

Horses used for different disciplines tend to develop injuries in common places, for example dressage horses often injure their hind suspensories either at its origin below the hock (high suspensory) or one of the branches above the fetlock joint, race horses usually injure their superficial digital flexor tendon in the fore limbs, polo ponies usually injure a structure in the hind limb. Obviously any horse can injure any one of the structures mentioned as a one off incident. The tendon tissue comprises fascicles of collagen fibres and fibrils produced by the tendon cells, the tenocytes. The fibres are linked together in a crimped formation and allow the tendon the stretch allowing it to act as a shock absorber and to store energy to help propel the horse forward. As the limb is loaded the fetlock joint is hyper-extended stretching the tendons, the tendon stores the energy then recoils hence the horse effectively bounces along. This allows horses to travel at such fast speeds. Tendonitis occurs when the fibrils fail within the tendon, usually the fibrils within the middle of the tendon fail first as there appears to be a differential strain across the tendon, hence the development of a core lesion. More severe damage causes rupture of more fibrils and eventually rupture of the whole tendon. As with elastic bands repeated stretching and loading of the tendon causes cumulative damage which weakens the tendon and eventually it fails.

The signs of a mild tendonitis may be a little heat in the limb in the region of the affected tendon. The structure may be sore to palpate and there may be some swelling under the skin. More severe injuries result in obvious visual thickening of the affected tendon and lameness. The best way to diagnose tendon injuries is with an ultrasound scan. This is usually performed 7-10 after the observation of a problem, this allows time for the lesion to mature, during the acute inflammatory phase of the tendon injury the tendon damage continues. The scan looks for changes in size, cross sectional area, and changes in fibre architecture. The scanners we have now can pick up quite early subtle changes in the fibres within the tendons. Treatment is aimed at minimising the inflammation, this is best achieved with cold therapy applied several times per day for about 20 minutes. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids are essential as is rest in the initial acute phase. Once the scan has been performed and the extent of the damage has been investigated a treatment plan can be made. If the injury occurs while at a competition, then seek assistance from the show vet, who will strap up the limb appropriately for transport home, after applying some cold therapy and administering the correct anti-inflammatory drugs. Looking to the future

Treatment of tendon injuries should be geared towards achieving a good quality repair that will be functional in the future and will not result in Diffuse tenonitis re-injury in the future. The plan may be a simple ascending exercise program for a mild diffuse tendonitis or it may involve a more complex stem cell procedure. Stem cell therapy gets a lot of press at the moment as it is the buzz in the medical world for treating disease and injury and has been used a lot in horses with tendon injuries. Basically SDFT Core lesion the tendon is injected with stem cells that are harvest from the horse and cultured in a lab, they have the ability to change into tendon cells once in the tendon. The idea being that a better quality of repair is achieved. Cheaper and less involved procedures may involve tendon splitting or fenestration. The use of injectable growth factors such as insulin like growth factor and platelet rich plasma, substances responsible for tissue repair, is becoming very popular as they are cheap and easy to use and the results have been excellent. One of the keys to successful tendon repair is controlled exercise after the acute inflammatory phase. Loading of the tendon stimulates the correct alignment of the fibres within the tendon that then allows the tendon to function in an elastic way. Scar tissue following injury often is strong but not elastic enough, hence the area of tendon next to the original injury has to stretch more and is then predisposed to injury. The prognosis for a horse with tendon injuries depends on the severity of the injury and the job the horse does. Many horses will return to their original level of competition and not be re injured with the correct management. Sometimes people decide to retire their horse from competition as they do not want to take a risk.

Fitting the Gatehouse HS1 Jockey Skull at Speedgate Regular readers will know that Laura Powell (Laura’s Diary) is heading to Badminton for the Grassroots Championships. When the opportunity came up to have a Gatehouse HS1 Jockey Skull fitted at Speedgate Saddlery we asked Laura to come along and be fitted by one of their qualified hat fitters.

1 To find out what size hat is needed, measure all the way around the head, a finger’s width above the eyebrows.

2 Place the hat on from the front of the head and roll back down. This should give a good idea of where it is fitting and where it is not.

3 Foam padding can be used to make the hat a perfect fit.

4 Check the circumference of the hat fits snugly, with no gaps anywhere. Check the hat fits securely and comfortably.

“The most important piece of equipment is a tape measure.”

5 Take a look at how the hat fits. Different brands suit different types of head shape. Some hats will sit too shallow and therefore not cover the right bits. Do the harness up and tie the lace at the back of the hat to complete the fitting of the hat. It is a common fault to wear the chin strap too loosely. It should be tight enough that there is room to run your little finger underneath.

Left to right: Nicola Barnes and Jenny Cook of Speedgate, Laura Powell and Bill Vero, designer of the Gatehouse HS1

Gatehouse HS1 Jockey Skull Worn by the likes of Mary King, William Fox-Pitt and Mark Todd, this top of the range jockey skull is approved to Snell E2001 and carries the BSI Kitemark. Snell is the highest manufactured equestrian helmet safety standard in the world and includes a test that simulates a rider falling into a fence rail, or having a secondary hit by a horse’s hoof. Carbon fibre reinforcement on the lower edge of the HS1 helps strengthen and balance the helmet, with riders reporting reduced stress on the neck during fast work or competition. Colours: Black or Silver Prices vary according to size and colour but start at £112 www.gatehouserange.co.uk 34 Localrider may 2012

Hell for leather

By Stephen Biddlecombe of www.worldwidetack.com

I

am a real fan of quality, handmade English leather – it will last a lifetime, if looked after. Leather products are a definite investment and could last for your horse’s lifetime. Foreign leather imports are still flooding the UK, and although they seem may seem like a cheap alternative, they can in some cases be of vastly inferior quality. Poor quality leather can end up being dangerous to both rider and horse. It may also need replacing more frequently, rendering any initial savings useless!

So how do you keep your leather tack looking like new? Unfortunately, tack cleaning is one of those jobs we just have to do. It might seem like a chore, but it keeps your horse’s leather accessories and equipment supple and hygienic. Giving your tack a thorough clean will also give you a chance to spot any weak points in the stitching or leather before they give way and cause an accident. If you don’t regularly clean your horse’s tack and accessories, the leather will dry out, becoming brittle and uncomfortable for your horse to wear. A regular cleaning regime is far better than letting your tack deteriorate to a point where it is nearly impossible to restore, or poses a risk to you for safety reasons. The last thing you want is to be out riding when your reins or martingale disintegrate or break, after a long period of neglect!

Top tips for caring for leather • Never use alcohol to clean mould on leather tack. • Beware - dust can collect in the smallest of cracks; it is microscopically sharp and can easily degrade leather. • Tack should be wiped down after every use. I cannot stress this enough – it is extremely important and a very simple thing that can prolong the life of the leather and protect it from excessive wear. • Unused tack should be cleaned at least once a month. • Always dry your tack well. Moisture can damage leather. • Not only should your tack be cleaned after every ride, it should also be stored correctly. • Try to keep leather products away from severe weathers, such as heavy rain or direct sunlight. Most leather has the potential to change colour, but keeping it out of sunlight will help to slow the process. Try to store your tack in a dark area. • Keep air moving in your tack room during the summer months by opening windows and doors when you are present. Stagnant air can attract mould growth. • Always remember to store your wet tack away from your dry tack. Moisture can have damaging effects on leather. • Try to keep your tack off the ground. Vermin can also help to destroy leather!

Yes, tack should be wiped down after every use! If you are buying quality, English leather like this, it makes sense to keep it clean and optimise its longevity

Above: If you are buying a bridle produced overseas, choose one that is made from good quality leather – if it looks too good to be true cost-wise, it probably is! Quality tack has strong buckles and firm stitching Purchasing and looking after good quality leather products is a definite investment for you and your horse’s future

Showcasing a popular leather tack accessory I sell a range of quality English leatherwear, and the bib martingale is becoming a firm favourite with customers - after apparently going out of fashion, it seems to be having a resurgence! It is similar to a running martingale, but has a solid, triangular piece of leather between the running straps to stop the horse from raising its head too high and help keep the reins closer together. Showjumper and young horse producer, Derek Morton, of Beech House Stud, always uses one on his young horses, especially for the first time they ever have a martingale on. “It stops them from grabbing hold of the martingale with their teeth and panicking,” he says. “It also holds the reins together, which for a youngster is important to help get a consistent rein contact. I also use it on the older horses,” Derek adds. “I find it gives a little more balance than a normal running martingale. It is a useful piece of equipment across the levels and I even use it on some of the Grade A’s, in international competition.” Stephens’ leather bib martingale with brass fittings is available at www.worldwidetack.com for £58.04 (exc VAT) in black or chestnut, one size. A bib converter for a breastplate is also available for £30.08 (exc VAT), black or chestnut, one size. may 2012 Localrider 35

WHATEVER Laura jumping Sooty, who is now sadly for sale

COVER

Laura Powell writes...

YOU NEED...

We are well on the way to Badminton – it’s only three weeks away now. I’ve already got two events under my belt. The first was Munstead in Godalming, Surrey. A lovely event and the perfect first run of the season. Spud and Alf were both entered into the BE100. Alf was tense in the dressage but rideable and scored 36 and Spud was very fresh – unusual! He’s fitter than ever this year and seems to have finally grown out of his ‘puppy fat’ and turned into a ‘sports horse’ – about time! He scored 38. Munstead had upgraded their usual show jumps to a full set of brand new bright plastic spooky jumps. It made interesting viewing, with a couple of not so easy turns, quite a few people came a cropper. Mine benefited from show jumping on grass at Pachesham a few days before and both jumped clear and then proceeded to jump clear on the cross country. Spud picked up a 10th place rosette, whereas Alf picked up a few time faults from me practising ‘going on and coming back’ on the course, he was just outside the placings.

...it’s all under thE SEIB umbrella.

Super-charged Spud

A week later we headed to Goring Heath just outside Reading. I haven’t been to Goring for two years and reminded myself not to leave it that long again! Another lovely event, with challenging courses over hilly terrain. This time we just had Spud on board. After a much better test in my eyes, not in the judge’s (37), Spud continued his new ‘sports horse’ image by jumping double clear. I couldn’t believe it when I looked at the scoreboard and found I’d been given three time faults for going too fast! Spud and fast are not normally put together! Plus he wasn’t even blowing when he came through the finish. Unfortunately our score wasn’t good enough for a placing but I was still chuffed with him.

Time to go show jumping

Show jumping wise it was time to bite the bullet and do a Newcomers (1.10m) class on Alf. I took Sooty along for moral support knowing he will jump any course no matter how high – he’s a bit simple like that! I had to pre-enter the classes, so no chance of backing out! I did my best show jumper impression – although I was the only one in beige breeches and jumped a double clear in the 1m and just had a fence in the Newcomers. Sooty also had a fence in each. No money won, but I didn’t falloff or stack it – win! I’ve taken the tough decision to sell Sooty as I need to fund the other horses’ careers and it’s just not viable to run three horses. So if anyone fancies a big black man who’s got a massive jump, but is a bit simple (in a good way!) please get in touch. Badminton prep continues to be at the forefront of my mind. I’ve been trotting a lot of circles on the 20m square of flat land in the paddock at home – I’m thanking my lucky stars that there are no ‘give and retake’ in the test. I’m also very lucky in that Westgate have supplied me with new Mark Todd competition breeches as well as jackets and fleeces so we will go looking smart and Gatehouse have supplied me with a custom fit HS1 skull cap – thank you very much.

Angelic Performance Team Eilberg - “We are very fortunate to have some fabulous mares. Luckily most are not typically ‘mareish’ but we are aware they do have to deal with their oestrus cycle and the upset this can cause. So, we find Oestress very useful. The mares are affected in different ways, from simply being a little tight through the back, to having an ‘opinion’ about not wanting to work today! Oestress works naturally to help regulate the oestrus cycle. Therefore the mare remains more comfortable, more even tempered, and more able to work happily. We recommend Oestress to all mare riders… its great news for the mare and for the person sat on top!”

From Darley to Dressage

FEATURE

For the next few months Sussex-based, Emma Clarke, will be writing a diary of life with her ex-racehorse, Lexcen, who she bought from Darley Rehoming (www.darleyrehoming.co.uk) in 2010.

I

am delighted to be writing a monthly column for Localrider from the point of view of a ‘grassroots’ dressage rider. I have been incredibly lucky to receive support from AVTrinity, a Tunbridge Wells based Independent Financial Adviser, without which I would not be able to make the transition from unaffiliated to affiliated dressage in June. A splash of showing will be thrown in for good measure. I’ve owned my current ride, Lexcen, since 2010. Lexcen is a six-year-old ex-racehorse who I purchased through the Darley rehoming programme. We tried our hand at showing last year with some success and have since been competing at Prelim and have recently moved up to Novice. To say I’ve had to do a lot of groundwork to bring Lex and myself up to scratch is an understatement, although we are getting there now, just! I took Lex to Stilebridge (run by the lovely Vanessa, who always kindly reads for me) over the Easter bank holiday weekend to attempt two novice tests. We produced a reasonable first test and were rewarded with third place, which I was very pleased with. The second test seemed to flow a lot better and I am pleased to say that we came away with a red rosette. The cherry on top was a ticket to the unaffiliated championship at Hickstead, a very good start for us at this level. We’ve quite a few shows planned for April and May with our next outing being at Speedgate, for the first show this season. Oldencraig and Hickstead are also on my list of ‘new’ places to visit. I hope to do well for AVTrinity this season and you 16/02/2012 12:59:56 can followadvert1_186x132_bleeds3mm_outlined.pdf my progress on www.avtrinity.com. Good luck to everyone this season, I hope to see you out and about.

t is very pleasing that more and more horse owners are considering the barefoot hoofcare option – as distributors of barefoot hoof boots, we have seen an increase in retailers asking for details of our products, and also a general increase among horse owners that want to know more about keeping horses without shoes. So, how do you choose your hoofcare practitioner, and what should you expect from their visits? Naturally, we support the work of forward-thinking farriers that give performance trims for working barefoot horses, but we are also well aware that a successful outcome where de-shoeing a horse and transitioning to barefoot is concerned depends on the skillset of the individual practitioner. Trimming the high performing barefoot horse, diet and management of the horse are not currently taught as part of a farrier’s syllabus, so it is important if you are working with a farrier to select one that has developed their own knowledge-base in these key areas. Make sure you seek recommendation from someone whose farrier has successfully managed their working barefoot horses, if you take this route! If you choose to work instead with a barefoot trimmer, again seek recommendation from a horse owner that has used their services, and choose a trimmer that demonstrates the criteria outlined in the NOS (National Occupational Standard) set out for this industry. Kent-based Lucy Priory of Barefoot South originally gained Certification with the AANHCP – the Association for the Advancement of Natural Horsecare Practices, which follows’ Jaime Jackson’s hoofcare ethos. She offers barefoot trimming services in the South-East and beyond. “I can’t emphasise enough the importance of a horse owner doing their research before considering the barefoot option, as it is important to arm yourself with the facts, and be prepared for what will be a rewarding and exciting journey with your horse,” she says. “I would say that there are very few horses that do not thrive on a barefoot regime – however some owners find the additional responsibility and management required of them when owning a barefoot horse a challenge to their lifestyle. With barefoot there is nowhere to hide, your ability as a horseman is on show to all.”

What to expect when your

barefoot horse

is trimmed By Lucy Nicholas of www.trelawneequine.co.uk, distributors of barefoot hoof boots

Trimming the high performing barefoot horse; with thanks to DLT photography.

Lucy Priory, http://www.barefoot-south.com / http://barefoothorseblog.blogspot.co.uk /0845 094 3391.

Lucy shares her tips for what to expect of your hoofcare practitioner when they visit your horse for a trim:

1

As Lucy Nicholas wrote in the April issue of LocalRider, hoof trimming rarely involves anything more than a small rasp – the equivalent to the filing of human finger nails. Only the hoof material that would wear away naturally, or needs to be removed to strengthen or prevent pathology, should be filed away.

2

Your practitioner should discuss with you how the hoof works, what common issues might appear and why in the barefoot horse, and prepare you for a potentially bumpy transition process. Your first few visits may include lots of information – take a notebook, and don’t worry if you feel a bit overwhelmed. A good trimmer will be happy to explain things a dozen times over and more if necessary.

3

Your practitioner should discuss your horse’s nutrition with you, as this is fundamental to a successful transition from horse shoes to barefoot. Hooves are a window to your horse’s health, and if the diet is not right then the hooves won’t be either. Basic guidelines include low sugar, low starch and appropriate minerals. Your trimmer should be able to advise you on how to obtain a forage analysis for example and what to do with the results.

4

Your practitioner should not ‘take your money and run’, in terms of what they see at your yard, or the property that your horse is kept at. It is their duty to comment on any issues of care that may affect your horse’s barefoot journey, whether it be the type of grazing you have, or the amount of turnout your horse gets. So expect them to be up front and honest about your facilities, and offer solutions to problems you are facing.

5

A good practitioner recognises pain issues and works within the horse’s comfort levels, so a very poorly horse may only be able to receive low levels of treatment. Rough handling, anger and unnecessary restraint should not have a place in their practice. But a good horseman or woman is usually assertive and assured around horses.

6

It is usual for the practitioner to ask to see the horse moving, so they can perform a dynamic assessment. MAY 2012 Localrider 67

Feeding the Competition Horse: The Importance of Fibre Provision

Words by Kate Coles BSc (Hons)

W

ith horses being produced to perform at higher levels than ever before, it is easy to forget that they are still fundamentally a grazing animal designed to digest small frequent meals of high fibre grass and forage. Providing the correct amounts of quality forage must be the basis for any feeding regime; neglecting it could lead to bad behaviour, health problems and substandard performance.

How much to feed? Your competition horse must have the correct balance of nutrients, energy and fluids to be able to perform, provided in a volume of food that satisfies appetite. Calculating appetite is easy; your horse will need to consume between 2 – 2.5% of his own body weigh in dry matter per day to feel satisfied and to maintain a healthy digestive system. This amount will then be divided between forage and concentrates, the percentage of which determined by energy requirements.

Feed according to work done! You must remember this statement when dividing your horses ration into forage and concentrates. All too often people over estimate work load or ‘feed up’ prior to work resulting in weight gain, behavioural problems or digestive stress. The table below will help categories your horses work load and feed percentages. Remember to always check manufacture guidelines as work load requirements can vary greatly. Work Done

Providing the right Energy Energy, which is measured in MJ/DE, can be fast or slow release depending on the type of feed and form of Carbohydrate. All horses will need a combination of both but work done will determine the amounts of each. Haylage contains digestible fibre which is broken down in the hind gut over a long period of time into carbohydrate for slow release energy. Haylage also contains indigestible fibre, essential for keeping a horse warm, settled and satisfied. Concentrate feeds contain sugar and starch which is broken down in the small intestine producing quick release energy. The speed at which food passes through the small intestine limits the quantities of sugars and starches that can be digested at any one time. Any sugar and starch which is not broken down and absorbed in the small intestine will pass through to the hind gut which is disastrous for the horse. To avoid this, always feed concentrates in small amounts throughout the day. This will also help to control the highs and lows associated with feeding high sugary starchy feeds.

Haylage for competition horses Meeting the nutritional and energy requirements of the competition horse with hay would require large amounts or an increase in concentrates. Fit horses often have a smaller appetite and are easily ‘put off’ with large amounts of hay. Increasing concentrates comes with its own negatives such as a higher risk of colic, gastric ulcers, laminitis and behavioural problems. As the grass in Haylage is not dried it keeps its nutritional value and moisture content for a lower percentage of dry matter, so dietary requirements can be easily met without exceeding appetite. The high water content also greatly improves palatability and means no dust, moulds or spores which can stress the respiratory system. When selecting Haylage for your competition horse make sure it’s produced using grasses specially selected for horses such as Meadow or Rye grasses. Avoid Haylage that is not specifically grown and produced for horses at all costs, poor grass choice and fermentation control can be very dangerous. As Haylage is higher in water content you will need to weight it according to dietary requirements. Your horse may also consume it quicker due to its fresh smell and great taste. To avoid this feed in small holed haynets spreading total ration throughout the day or hanging several nets around the stable in different positions to encourage grazing. Feeding Haylage can greatly reduce concentrate feed cost, many horses also experience a positive change in attitude when they are no longer experiencing the highs, lows and digestive upsets associated with high concentrate diets. 68 Localrider may 2012
