here is an air of excitement at Localrider HQ, as we send this issue off to the printers and count down the days to the start of the outdoor season. Studying the listings in the Show Dates Guide it is set to be a busy one. We also have our guide to ‘Where to go Cross Country Schooling’. Turn to page 16 to find out more. We are fortunate in the South East that there are so many amazing shows, events, venues and training facilities, so there is no excuse not to get out and have some fun this summer. This month I met Kent-based event rider Adam Trew, for whom a trip to Badminton as a teenager ignited a spark, which just over ten years later sees him with a string of fantastic young horses and the possibility of riding at his first four-star event in the next couple of years. Turn to page 10 to read his inspiring story. Then on page 12 we share Adam’s Rules of Training, which include pole work exercises to help get you and your horse tuned for the competition season ahead.

Veterans are back… This month we share more of your wonderful veteran stories. There really are some true golden oldies, who are determined to keep going out to parties and enjoying life to the full. There are nine pages of veteran stories, starting on page 38. This issue also has a mix of wonderful show reports, pictures and stories throughout and we are grateful to all of you who have taken the time to send us pictures and tell us about your horses and ponies. We look forward to hearing more of your news over the coming months and remember to keep in touch by email or social media. PONY CLUB • SHOWING • SHOWJUMPING

Going to a show, your schooling sessions or just going for a hack can be so much more relaxed when you understand the basics. Preparing for an event, understanding your horse or ponies behaviour, planned schooling schedules and much more can avoid stress, allowing a relaxed pathway to a great partnership between you and your horse or pony. Alongside her traditional teaching Ali is helping riders to clarify what it is they want to achieve, what is currently going wrong and why this might be happening. The first session often takes place around Ali’s kitchen table in Piltdown. Ali said: “We will sit down and discuss their horse’s routine, what they are feeding him, what work he currently does, as well as what they want to achieve. I then give them homework to do before the next session.” Ali hopes to help riders to become more confident in their riding and ultimately more successful in their goals, whether this is going for wonderful hacks, or improving in the competition arena. Email Ali for more information aliremmen@me.com or telephone 07850 522768.
Ten new Ambassadors for Petplan Equine Petplan Equine, one of the UK’s leading specialist equine insurance providers, has selected ten Ambassadors who will spend 2017 helping to promote the brand. Petplan Equine was looking for riders from its own customer base who are well known in their local equestrian community and compete regularly. Insuring horses and paying claims for over 28 years, Petplan Equine has gained a vast amount of knowledge about the conditions horses can endure. The company also has a strong relationship with the veterinary profession. Petplan Equine asks its Ambassadors to support them in highlighting to the equestrian community the importance of responsible horse ownership and the benefits of horse insurance in keeping horses healthy and happy. All Petplan Equine Ambassadors will be provided with branded kit as well as £500 towards competition entries and training costs. They will also benefit from media training to help further their equestrian careers. “During the selection process it was quite clear that the riders had a deep sense of responsibility in the care of their horses and that they were all well respected members of their local equine community. We can’t wait to start working with our ten new Ambassadors so that we can give something back to our customers and help them achieve their own ambitions in partnership with Petplan Equine,” said Kate Hopkins, Petplan Equine Marketing Executive. The Petplan Equine 2017 Ambassadors are: Amy Tilston - Lancashire, Charlotte Wadley – Gloucester, Jack Stancombe – Wiltshire, Juliette Edmonds – Hertfordshire, Laura Gordon - West Sussex, Lauren Hyde – Dorset, Lyndsey Ryder – Hertfordshire, Nelle Disley – Cambridgeshire, Rachael Jayne Barker – Nottingham, Richard Raffel – Berkshire. www.Petplanequine.Co.Uk/Ambassadors

Lungeing for Enhanced Performance Most horses are lunged during the breaking process, but this is often discontinued once ridden away. People often fail to realise the benefits of lungeing as part of the horse’s regular fitness training and competition preparation.

Twenty minutes whizzing around on the forehand are counterproductive, but correct lungeing with an EquiAmi helps develop core strength whilst allowing the horse to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. By watching your horse on the lunge you learn lots about his movement and weaker areas, which can then guide your ridden work. Lungeing aims to encourage the horse to stretch over his back, engage his hind quarters while lifting his shoulders, working into a soft, accepting contact. The EquiAmi lunge aid encourages softness and stretching whilst enhancing the core and improving balance and paces. Dr. Hilary Bentley says that EquiAmi doesn’t fix or restrain, but encourages engagement of the hindquarters, lightness of the forehand, acceptance and self-carriage. An independent study showed that, over a six-week period, there was a significant increase in stride length and decrease in asymmetry in thoroughbred horses lunged twice a week in the EquiAmi lunge aid. These findings demonstrate that, like a gymnastic workout for athletes, regular lungeing can enhance the results of training and improve performance. With endorsements from Paralympic gold medalist Natasha Baker MBE, event riders Harry Meade and Jonty Evans, EquiAmi is being recognised for its benefits in all areas from dressage, eventing and showing through to rehabilitation from injury or surgery and retraining of racehorses. www.equiami.com

news SEIB Search for a Star 2017
T
he eagerly awaited dates for the 2017 SEIB Search for a Star and SEIB racehorse to riding horse showing series have been announced, and there will be new opportunities for competitors as a result of a revised schedule for 2017. a new Working Show horse/Pony class will be incorporated into the 2017 Search for a Star schedule to replace the former Working hunter, riding club Show horse and Show/Show hunter Pony classes. It is envisaged at this stage that competitors will be asked to negotiate two straight forward fences and complete an individual show instead of horses being ridden by a ride judge. The changes mean that adults and children can complete on horses and ponies of any show type, and traditional coloured horses, ‘coblets’ and mountain and moorland types will be eligible, provided they can jump a small fence. There will be a horse and a pony section at each venue and the winners will earn a coveted place in the prestigious SEIB Search for a Star final at the horse of The Year Show (hOYS). Leading equine Insurance brokers, SEIB Insurance Brokers provide cover for horses, horse boxes, yards and much more. “I am very excited to be able to offer this new class, which will allow more show types to enter Search for a Star and give more amateur riders the chance to achieve their dream of riding at The horse of the Year Show. The standard is exceptional and we are delighted to give so many riders this opportunity, ” said Nicolina macKenzie, marketing manager at SEIB Insurance Brokers. The Search for A Star competition rules, comprehensive information, a downloadable schedule and entry form will be available from www.search4astar.org.uk and for the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship from www.racehorse2ridinghorse.co.uk.
Can you donate a Teddy?
The Teddy Trust has recently sent a shipment of 10,000 teddies from Kingsland in Herefordshire to Kurdistan. Through the power of twitter Localrider Magazine discovered the Teddy Trust and has been able to add in a very small way to the collection of teddies sent. So often we think of helping in practical ways such as clothes and blankets, but for the children who have lost everything having a teddy or soft toy to hold and cuddle at night can change their world. You can pack a large number of teddies in a box and it is amazing how many houses have a stash of teddies which have sat on a shelf and look like new, but brand new teddies are appreciated too. If you can help please send them to: The Teddy Trust, Kingsland Post Office, Kingsland, Leominster, Herefordshire, HR6 9QS

Get Your Paddock Ready with Suregrow Aivly in Ringwood, Hampshire are helping their customers prepare their paddocks for summer grazing. The days are finally getting longer and warmer, and what has seemed like an endless winter is finally coming to an end. Now is a great time to prepare and nourish your paddock before grazing starts, making use a specially designed paddock fertilizer to give your paddock that extra nutrient boost it needs for a summer of grazing. Suregrow is specially designed to be used on horse paddocks and is an excellent choice for a number of reasons. Not only does it stimulate root development, resulting in a denser sward and less weed growth, but there is no need to relocate your horse whist spreading. You only need to spread four bags per acre for maximum results, making this a cost-effective choice. Suregrow fertilizer provides slower release nutrients resulting in a more sustained grass growth over a longer period of time. This specially formulated fertilizer will not scorch or burn grass and will improve palatability and promote a greener field for delicious, natural grazing all summer long. For help and advice on fertilizing your paddock ready for summer grazing, speak to one Aivly’s fully trained and experienced members of staff. You can visit their store at Crow Lane, Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 3EA or shop online at www.aivly.co.uk

news Last ever Frensham Sponsored Ride
E
vent organiser Chris Cook said: “The 2017 Frensham Sponsored Cross Country Horse Ride, will be the last ride that the current committee organises. The ride has raised in excess of £750,000 for local charities over the last forty years. The ride originally started in 1977 under Molly and Helen Clarke as an idea to raise money for charity and provide a fun filled crosscountry ride for horse riders of all capabilities. Money raised back then was approximately £1,000 and the venue was at Priory Equestrian. This proved so successful that over the following 40 years, including a move to a bigger venue, Stockbridge Farm in Tilford, The Frensham Sponsored Ride raised over £750,000 for local charities. The most successful day for fund raising was in April 2003 when the ride attracted 900 horse riders who enjoyed a 10-mile cross-country course with 40 optional jumps raising £28,000 in one day. Fund raising following each year ranged from £15,750, £18,500 and £21,000, just to quote a few figures. Riders came from Kent, Sussex and the Isle of Wight and locally to the show ground at Stockbridge Farm to enjoy the thrills and possible some spills of the event. It was decided to offer a course for children-in-hand to experience a smaller cross-country course with jumps no more than 1’6”in a secure 15 acre field. This was a great success and was also attempted by adult nervous riders hoping to gain confidence. A dog and handler little agility course was also set up so that everyone was included. None of the above would have been possible without the tremendous support over the years of landowners who have allowed participants to ride across their land on the day and the huge number of amazing volunteers. Sadly, the ride has outgrown the committee and they feel it is time to pass on the baton. If anyone is interested in taking on this huge fund raising potential event with a similar event of their own we would be happy to explain what is involved.” For more information contact Chris by email: fsr@live.co.uk, for more information about show see the advert on page 73.
Cranleigh RDA Sponsored Ride 2017 Cranleigh RDA Group is celebrating its 50th birthday this year! It has been offering riding to people with special needs from a wide area around Guildford since 1967 and steadily growing over the years. If you are a horse rider, you will know the joy and value of riding and of contact with horses. In 2016, the group gave this the opportunity to more than 250 adults and children with all kinds of challenges to face, offering them physical therapy as well as an element of freedom, pleasure and confidence and a sense of real achievement. Entirely self-supporting, the Cranleigh RDA raises vital funds annually through its Good Friday Sponsored Ride to help meet its costs. The participation of many able bodied riders is key to the Ride’s success. Liz Harrison, Chair of Cranleigh Riding for Disabled said: “Please do join in on Good Friday 14 April 2017 to help this excellent cause. Rain or shine, those who take part will have the satisfaction of knowing that they will be making a contribution to improving the lives of many people with special needs who, like them, simply love to ride horses.” For more information see the advert on page 64. 8 Localrider march 2017

Historic London Harness Horse Parade The famous London Harness Horse Parade will again take place at the South of England Centre, Ardingly, West Sussex on Easter Monday 17th April 2017. The annual event is an amalgamation of The London Cart Horse Parade (first started in 1885) and the London Van Horse Parade (started in 1904) and depicts transportation through the ages. This makes it one of the oldest and most well-loved carriage driving events in the country. Generations of carriage-driving families make the annual Easter pilgrimage to the Parade and the current President, WA Gilbey, is a direct descendant of the founder of the London Cart Horse Parade, Sir Walter Gilbey Bart. The London Harness Horse Parade has been a popular Easter spectacle for 132 years, and twelve years ago moved from its central London location to the spacious, purpose-built South of England Centre in Ardingly, Sussex RH17 6TL with free parking and easier access. The Parade has since been expanded to include a display of the earliest motor cars to enhance the spectacle of how transport developed over the ages. In addition to the 100 + horse drawn vehicles the Parade will include vintage tractors, historic and classic cars, allowing spectators to experience the changes from horse drawn transport to mechanically propelled vehicles. This annual Easter event is excellent value for a family costing just £8 per adult with children and parking free. The event will also feature stationary engines, trade stands, refreshments and horse drawn wagon rides. The 2017 Parade will take place on Easter Monday 17th April, starting at 10.30 am with the Veterinary and Farriery inspections, followed by judging of the light and heavy horse turnouts. The gates open at 8.30 am for spectators to watch the exhibits being prepared, admire the historic and classic vehicles in attendance and visit the trade stands to do some Easter shopping as well as enjoy refreshments. The Main Parade and presentation of prizes will take place following completion of judging and inspections later in the morning. www. lhhp.co.uk

Adam Trew’s Guide to
The Basics & Rules of Training
Adam’s training ethos is based on simple rules, which rely upon the basics being in place and if something goes wrong you start again, working through the basics until everything goes right. Adam says…
Y
ou have all heard it over and over before, but it is essential that your basics are in place. We are all guilty from time to time of just assuming that they are there, but it will always be the thing that catches you out. This is how I think about and interpret what it actually means. The basics are what will make progression much easier. It’s very simple, if you ask your horse to go it goes, if you ask him to stop he stops even if you are between fences. If you ask him to turn left he goes left and if you ask him to go right, he goes right. The same applies when you want to slow down. I train this basic principle every day and work towards getting the horse to respond to the lightest aid possible. Obviously, that’s not always the case to start with, it takes time, be patient and repeat, repeat, repeat. The improvement in the horse’s response to my aids is what I look for over time.
So how do you achieve this? Consistency is key. I make sure I am very consistent with the way I ask my horse, every day using the same aids to give the horse the best opportunity to understand what I am asking. When they understand the rules that’s when you can start to refine the aid, which allows them to start to focus on the next step, rhythm. You need to be able to feel the rhythm and notice the minute you lose it, but soon it will become an automatic default.
Rhythm & Balance You can’t maintain balance without rhythm and I don’t ever want to be ‘holding’ my horses in balance. For example, I want to be able to trot/canter my horse around on a soft, loose rein without the horse getting faster. To train this I pick the rhythm I want to ride in and then soften the contact and see if they can maintain the same rhythm. At first they probably won’t hold it for long so when they begin to lose balance and get a bit longer in their stride I rebalance them and then repeat the exercise. The same applies if they slow down, I don’t want to be nagging my horses around the arena so if they do slow down I should just be able to touch my leg on and they move forward back up to the pace I set. It’s not a problem if your horse breaks these rules during a ride it just means you get another chance to reinforce the rule. There are no grey areas in my system. I stick to these rules every day and this way everyone knows where they stand. Once these basics are established I start to work on suppleness, before moving onto jumping fences, concentrating on their shape over the fence and their rideability whilst jumping.
Pole Work Adam uses poles in his daily schooling sessions, going over them in both directions in trot and canter. Here you see Adam allowing the horse to balance itself. If the horse falls out of balance Adam would stop let it regain its balance and start again. Only once he is happy that the horse understood about staying in a regular rhythm and balance over the poles would he move on to a cross pole.
Jumping Exercise Adam likes to set up two small fences with five strides in between them. Keeping the fences small means the horse can make a mistake without being punished. The idea of the exercise is to jump the first fence, land and stop, or turn left or right. Most of you will know that unless trained to listen to the rider, horses will land and try and lock onto the next fence (some might still try this). Using this exercise the aim is that the horse will eventually give up trying to continue on to the second fence and only once he has stopped doing this and started listening to the rider should it be incorporated into the exercise. Adam starts his young horses off over two poles, five strides apart and if you are trying this exercise at home, it is best to start with poles on the ground, before you start jumping. Trot and canter over them, asking your horse to stop in between, or turn left or right to make sure he is waiting and listening to you. You can also work on your canter, varying the striding and making sure your horse is in a rhythm. Ask for four strides making sure you are not chasing, then ask for six without holding back.

International Event Rider Adam Trew Powered by Pure Once Adam felt his horse was listening to him and not making decisions for himself, he asked the horse to continue and jump the next fence. Adam said it is important to teach the horse to listen for instructions like this from day one, as once they start going up the grades the cross-country courses get quite technical and some of the fences can involve jumping, landing and turning, even though there might be another fence in the horse’s line of sight.

Be Prepared for the Competition Season We all focus so hard on our riding, having extra lessons before the start of the season, that it is easy to forget the important things, like teeth, backs, feet, tack and equipment and planning is to key to avoid any last-minute disasters. Adam suggests…
1
Have your horse’s teeth checked. Any imbalances or sharp edges will be reflected in the work he produces. If his teeth are comfortable, he should be able to produce the best test possible. Don’t have them checked too close to a show or event as your horse may need a few days to adapt to how they feel to him (just like after we have been to the dentist).
2
Make sure you have all the stud holes that you need and that they are all working properly. There is nothing worse than arriving at an event and finding the stud won’t screw in.
3
Have your saddles checked. This is particularly important if you have a young horse who may have changed shape or grown. When we see our horses on a daily basis we don’t always see quite how much they have changed in a six-month period. If you are an event rider, don’t just have your jumping saddle checked have your dressage one checked too. If you use different saddlecloths and pads at competitions make sure you tell the saddler, as this can make a big difference.

Check all your other equipment. Look for wear and tear or if anything is broken. Also, try it on and make sure it is all still comfortable, both for you and your horse. Remember brand new brushing boots probably feel different to your horse, so if you are replacing key items like this, wear them in at home first, don’t just put them on for the first time, the morning of the show or event.
Good Luck!

bigger, more complex technical questions. It is an ideal venue for introducing young horses to cross-country as well as challenging more experienced ones. The range of fences includes the type of jumps to be found on BE courses such as skinnies, banks, ditches, corners, ditch/pallisades, trakheners and drop fences and includes an excellent water complex. The jumps are professionally built by local firm Sussex Courses, who build at local events such as Chilham and Eridge. As well as adding to the range of fences at 40/50cm, CXC has launched a brand new course of 1.10m jumps designed and built to BE Novice specifications. They have also added to their jumps, a selection of the fences to be found at the Mitsubishi Cup Grassroots Championships, so a visit to Comphurst is a must for anyone who has qualified this year.
CXC has expanded this year to allow access to more fields and many of the jumps have been repositioned. One of the features of CXC is that the owners, Tanya and William Reid, are happy to move jumps around to accommodate specific needs of riders or trainers wishing to work on various elements of cross-country riding. Comphurst Cross Country is an ideal training facility for riders at all levels. Pony Clubs and Riding Clubs are very welcome to use the facilities and run their own clinics and local trainers are invited to contact Tanya to discuss their ideas for offering training. A new online booking system has been added this year so that people can easily book course hire and clinics via the website, www.comphurstfarm.co.uk, there is no booking fee to pay. You can also find a full list of up-coming clinics with both local and not so local event riders and trainers.

omphurst Cross Country (CXC) opened to huge acclaim in the summer of 2016 and has proved to be extremely popular with riders at all levels, from those looking to have a fun day out to professional event riders tuning up for BE 1* events. Set on a 300 acre farm, it has easy access from the A271 at Windmill Hill (between Battle and Hailsham in East Sussex) and enjoys excellent grass cover on Tunbridge Wells sand, ensuring that the going is invariably good. It was designed as a training facility by Olympic Course Builder and BE Platinum Course Designer Scott Brikell, so that there are many versions of the sort of jumps to be found at BE events in a range of sizes from 30cm to 1.10m. Horses and riders can build their confidence and develop their experience by starting at smaller jumps and building up to
Bonfleur Cross Country Course at Linton, near Maidstone, is currently looking amazing. Having not had a wet winter the course is rolled and all ready to open on 1st March.
The courses range from 50cm to 110cm in height, and a number of new jumps are being added, including five new additions to the 50cm course and new skinnies at 80cm and 90cm including a combination of wishing wells. Bonfleur are also rejuvenating the steps at the water and the bank complex, this will give many new challenges at the water complex and even more options than before at the bank complex making it suitable for all levels. There will also be new train and tractor jumps added by the summer.
Portable fences Bonfleur have expanded their own workshop and now have a team making cross-country jumps and show jumps which they individually build to customers’ preferences. They will also deliver and anchor the fences on site throughout the UK. See their full catalogue online at www.bonfleurcrosscountrycourse.co.uk

Reducing our reliance on chemicals for sustainable As spring approaches, it’s a great time to be considering our horse’s parasite control for the year ahead. This means making plans for their field management and a regular testing programme to protect them both now and in the future.
parasite control
W
Words by Claire Shand SQP
e’ve probably all heard the term ‘wormer resistance’ which describes parasites that have evolved so that they are no longer affected by the chosen worming treatment. Much like antibiotics this limits the effective drugs we have to control infection. There are only a limited number of wormers and no new ones in development; if we end up with resistance to all our drugs then we will no longer be able to treat parasites in our horses. A potentially devastating prospect. There are two important steps we can take to slow resistance and safeguard our horses: 1. Protect key medicines 2. Reduce the worm challenge in the environment
hatch and become mobile within seven days at which point they leave the dung piles to re-infect the pasture. The milder and wetter the weather the further and faster the larvae can travel. Collecting droppings twice a week, even through winter is a sound investment in your worm control programme. These additional steps will also help: • Keep horses with the same grazing companions for herd stability. Rest and rotate grazing and don’t overcrowd fields. • Cross graze pasture with other species e.g. sheep where possible. • Keep new horses separate until tested and treated accordingly. • Don’t worm and move; after worming ensure horses stay on the same pasture for a few days to help slow down resistance.
Protect key medicines
Taking simple steps to beat resistance will help us to play the long game, preserving the efficacy of the wormers to give us many happy years of horse owning ahead.
A parasite can only build resistance to a drug when exposed to it. If we only worm when necessary – using worm egg counts and other diagnostic tools wherever possible to reduce the frequency of chemical doses - that on its own will prolong the life of our wormers considerably. Healthy adult horses can follow a very simple annual plan: worm count for redworm and roundworm every three months in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Dose for the possibility of encysted redworm in mid-winter, sometime between December and February, and after the first frost if you are also targeting bots. Wherever possible we should reserve moxidectin (Equest) for this single winter dose and use other wormers through the rest of the seasons to target adult stages of small redworm and other parasite challenges. This will help preserve efficacy of this important chemical. Using it as a blanket wormer at other times of year it is akin to using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. Test for tapeworm every six months, treating only if results indicate. Keep an eye out for pinworm and sellotape test horses if you suspect a problem. Co-ordinate any treatment needed giving sufficient wormer for the horse’s weight. Exposing the worms to a dose of wormer that is not enough to kill them is a sure fire way to build an army of resistant worms. Check for resistant worms; if a positive result is found, treat the horse then sample again in about 10-14 days. If the wormer has been effective the second count should be either ‘no eggs seen’ or very low.

My favourite
dressage legal bits... Horse owners have lots of choice now in terms of precision engineered bits
F
ortunately, horse owners have lots of choice now in terms of bits that are precision engineered, offer targeted bitting solutions, and are precisely designed with a particular equine challenge, conformational issue or sensitivity in mind. And best of all, many are also dressage legal. You can find the latest British Dressage bitting rulings at the website: bit.do/dressage_legal Excitingly, a brand new addition in BD’s ‘dressage legal’ bit range for 2017 is Bombers Equestrian Equipment’s ‘Flexible Mullen’, one of my top four ‘dressage legal’ bits for UK-based riders.
Bombers Flexible Mullen (Fulmer and Loose ring)
Bombers Flexible Mullen
The Flexible Mullen mouthpiece is made from an internal stainless steel chain covered with a non-toxic, UV resistant PVC tube. This bit offers exceptionally soft and evenly distributed pressure over the tongue and bars of the mouth. There is a Loose Ring and Fulmer (or ‘Full Cheek’) option. The Fulmer cheekpiece will have the same effect as the traditional Eggbutt style of bit, e.g. it will prevent pinching on the sides of the mouth; however, the extended pins above and below the bit firstly prevent the bit being pulled through the mouth, and secondly have the effect of guiding the horse’s head, which is great for schooling and training purposes.
Bombers Snaffle (Fulmer and Loose ring)
Bombers’ standard snaffle mouthpiece is popular due to the curved mouthpiece, which distributes pressure more evenly over the tongue and bars. With the offset centre link, it will reduce the ‘nutcracker’ action and pressure points on the tongue. The Fulmer version will again have the Bombers Snaffle same effect as the traditional Eggbutt style, e.g. preventing pinching and guiding the head. There is a Loose Ring option available too (pictured), which allows for immediate release and relief from tongue and bar pressure, due to the way it ‘re-sets’ in the horse’s mouth.
Words by bitting expert Stephen Biddlecombe this bit. As discussed, the Loose Ring (pictured) allows for immediate release and relief from tongue and bar pressure, which will ‘re-set’ the bit in the horses’ mouth. The Fulmer again has the effect of guiding the horse’s head.
Buster Roller (Fulmer and Loose Ring)
The Buster Roller is a great bit for schooling; the link in the middle is shortened to 40mm, increasing bar and tongue pressure, making the bit sharper than conventional link bits. The increased pressure on the bar will lift the head and the roller will increase pressure on the tongue, Buster Roller tucking the chin in. There’s a Fulmer and Loose Ring option, and the latter style is pictured. All Bombers Bits are made from blue sweet iron. Bombers bits are commonly sized 125mm to 145mm, although bespoke options are also available. Just call 01825 841 303 with your requirements or email info@worldwidetack.co.uk. South-East-based SB Bits was recently launched by bitting expert, Stephen Biddlecombe.
SB Bits – Bitting expertise straight from the horse’s mouth
Elliptical (Fulmer and Loose ring)
The Bombers Elliptical has a 45mm central lozenge; the roller is designed to heighten the horse’s awareness of the bit. When the rein is used, this mouthpiece wraps across the tongue, creating tongue pressure and reducing bar pressure. Please note, appearances may be deceiving; this bit joint is stronger than the control plate in the Bombers’ range, due to it having a smaller surface area. A horse using his tongue as a means of pushing against the bit and therefore taking control will draw back and tuck his chin in, Elliptical coming back to a better point of control with

Diagnosing and Monitoring for
Tapeworm
Burdens
Words by Dr Corrine Austin of Austin Davis Biologics Ltd
T
here’s a constant, silent battle going on inside your horse’s intestine. Parasitic worms have become adapted to live inside certain areas of the gut by feeding on nutrients before the horse is able to absorb them. The horse’s immune system does its best to fight them off but it is often fighting a losing battle; worms have become so cleverly adapted, that they can remain unaffected. So it falls to the conscientious horse owner to use correct worm control strategies, including testing for worm burdens, administering wormers when needed and managing pasture to prevent re-infection or the transfer of worm infection from one horse to another.
The most common worms
The most common worms to infect horses in the UK are small redworm (cyathostomins), roundworm (ascarids) and tapeworm (cestodes). Three species of tapeworm are capable of infecting horses. The most common in the UK is Anoplocephala perfoliata. It can grow up to 8 cm long and is made up of a series of segments. The head has four suckers which the tapeworm uses to attach itself to the caecum and to a small region of the intestines called the ileocaecal junction. This localised attachment causes damage to the intestines and the presence of large numbers of tapeworms cause intestinal obstruction and clinical disease, resulting in colic.
Diagnosing Tapeworm
Worm egg counts (WEC), where worm eggs are counted in a dung sample, should be carried out at least three times a year to monitor for small redworm and roundworm, however, WEC are unreliable for detecting tapeworm burdens, as eggs are released intermittently and are not uniformly spread throughout the dung. Tapeworm burdens are more accurately diagnosed by either a blood or a saliva test, both of which detect tapeworm-specific antibodies. In the past, the accepted method to control tapeworms was to treat all horses every six months, regardless of whether they needed treating, but since the availability of accurate tests, this practice is no longer necessary or recommended.
The EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test
The EquiSal saliva test is carried out using the specially designed swab provided in the kit to collect saliva. The sample is sent back to the laboratory for testing in a tube containing preservative solution. It is easy to integrate EquiSal Tapeworm testing into your worm control programme – simply test every six months at a time when you would consider routine worming for tapeworm. The test provides a low, borderline or moderate/high diagnosis and worming is recommended for horses diagnosed as borderline or moderate/high. Diagnostic accuracy has been proven through full validation of the test which has been published in the peer reviewed journal, Veterinary Clinical Pathology.
the dung on the bridleway before moving to the paddock and been inadvertently eaten by Ama. You can read more about this study at www.equisal.co.uk
Testing before treating reduces doses
Routinely testing for tapeworm every six months and only treating horses diagnosed with a burden significantly reduces the doses of wormer being administered to horses as approximately 75% of horses in the UK are diagnosed with a low burden and do not require treatment.
THE SALIVA TEST FOR TAPEWORM By Austin Davis Biologics Ltd.
Scientific validation published by Veterinary Clinical Pathology • Proven accuracy, equivalent to blood testing • Test every 6 months as part of your worm control programme (tapeworms cannot be reliably detected by egg counts)
• Current statistics show that 77% of horses do not need worming for tapeworm
The importance of routine testing
Routinely monitoring your horse for tapeworm burdens is important as, infection can be influenced by factors outside of your control. For example, Ama and Charlie graze separately, in a regularly muck cleared field. Both horses are on a monitoring study and had been diagnosed with low burdens for two years, so it was quite a surprise when Ama’s test results diagnosed her with a moderate/high burden. However, the adjacent bridleway was found to have horse dung left and this was enough to infect Ama, who grazes closest to the bridleway. This can be explained when considering the tapeworm life cycle, in which oribatid mites are intermediate hosts (see life cycle diagram). Oribatid mites living on the pasture would have ingested tapeworm eggs from

Foaling the Mare Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (StudMed) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital
M Mare and new born foal
A sweat alarm will warn you when your mare starts to sweat during the first stage of labour
ost mares foal without complication, however it is important that they are monitored regularly as the foaling becomes imminent. Mares prefer to foal when all is quiet, as such it is important that the checks do not disturb them. The stable can be fitted with a low wattage light bulb that can be left on. Small cameras are available so that foaling mares can be observed from a distance and sweat alarms can be used to indicate an imminent labour. There are alarms that can be stitched into the vulva which call your mobile phone when the water bag is pushed through the vulva at the onset of labour. In high-risk mares with complications, the milk secretions can be monitored to more accurately identify when labour is likely to begin. The mare herself will start to show signs impending foaling. These may occur several weeks before foaling or may start much closer. The signs include development of the udder, swelling in front of the udder, slackening of the pelvic ligaments resulting in hollowing and softening of the quarters, lengthening and relaxation of the vulva, changes in temperament and the production of wax on the teats. The “waxing-up” of the mare is one of the last signs to occur.
Freezing colostrum
During the last month of pregnancy the udder produces the first milk, colostrum, this is rich in antibodies that protect the foal from infection. Prior to foaling some mares drip or run milk and as a result lose the valuable colostrum, once lost it is not replaced. If this occurs 200ml Normal presentation of a foal volumes can be milked from the mare and frozen, this stored colostrum Once the nose is out of the can be thawed in warm water vulva, it is worth clearing the (not microwaved) and bottle-fed membranes from the nostrils to the foal in the first six hours after foaling.
Three stages of labour
Applying traction in direction of hocks
Foal with legs still in birth canal
While a mare is foaling it is better to minimise interference and to only respond when there is a problem. There are three stages of labour. The first stage is when the foal is getting into the correct position to be born, this may take several hours. During this time the mare may become restless, sweat, look at her flanks and get up and down. The second stage of labour begins with the passing and breaking of the white water bag, it ends with the complete birth of the foal. Ideally mares should foal lying down. The second stage of labour involves the forceful uterine and abdominal contractions required to give birth to the foal, typically the mare will be lying on her side. The average length of the second stage is 17 minutes, if after this length of time when forceful expulsive efforts have been made and the foal has not been produced veterinary assistance should be sought. The third stage of labour involves the passing of the placenta. Once the mare stands after foaling the
placenta should be knotted at the level of the hocks to prevent the mare from standing on it. The placenta is usually passed within one hour, if it is not passed within three hours veterinary assistance will be required. The placenta should be kept for your vet to examine.
Let the mare guide you
Most mares will foal without any complications. The normal presentation is that of a diving posture where the two front feet and the head come together, so the first part of the foal to be seen will be a hoof, usually followed by a second hoof a little further back. The soles of these hooves should be facing the ground, if they are facing upwards the foal is either rotated or it is breach and coming back feet first which is very unusual. A rotated foal will end up in the correct orientation as the mare gets up and down, so let her do this. The leg with the foot which is a little further back will have a flexed elbow, the elbow may catch on the brim of the pelvis, if the mare appears to be making little progress getting the foal out, then between the mare’s contractions grip the pastern on the shorter leg and pull the limb to the same length as the more forward hoof, this will extend the elbow and prevent it catching on the pelvis. Once this is corrected often the foal will come away easily. As well as two front legs there should be a nose, this should be at about the level of the foal’s mid canon on the forelimbs. Once the nose is out of the vulva it is worth just clearing the membranes from the nostrils. If little progress is being made by the mare a little traction can be put on the foal to help it out, the direction of pull should be down towards the mares hocks due to the shape of the birth canal and the posture of the foal. Grasp the pastern regions and pull gently, particularly between the mare’s contractions to prevent the foal slipping back into the uterus, let the contractions push the foal out, just help her. Once the foal gets its chest and then pelvis through the mare’s vulva it will come away very easily. Ideally the foals back legs should be left in the birth canal and the mare allowed to lye quietly to regain her strength, in this position the foal will still remain attached to the placenta via the umbilical cord, during the time it lies here blood from the placenta will be retained by the foal. The placenta should break at the natural weak point next to the foal’s abdomen when the mare stands up. As the foal is lying there make sure the nostrils are clean, sit it on its chest with its front legs wide apart in front of it and rub its chest with straw to stimulate breathing. If at any stage in the birth process there are concerns about the foal’s presentation or its viability then seek veterinary assistance immediately.

Feed news
What to feed this
Spring...
As we head into spring it is important to remember that the grass will be beginning to grow. It isn’t always easy to spot how quickly it is growing when it is being grazed, so keep an eye on your lawn. When that starts growing your fields will too. With that in mind we have brought together a range of feed and supplements suitable for spring feeding, including for the good doer and laminitic prone horse or pony.
Mollichaff HoofKind Complete Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is made from a balanced blend of high quality oat straw, dried alfalfa and fibre pellets and is topped with a light dressing of soya oil with added vitamins and minerals, trace elements, including magnesium and natural plant-based antioxidants, as well as added biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals. It provides a low level but high quality protein and restricted calories to give limited, controlled energy from high quality digestible fibre and oil-based ingredients, making it an excellent feed for good doers as well as those prone to laminitis. www.horsehage.co.uk
Horslyx Balancers If your horse suffers from, or is prone to laminitis, then the diet is one of the most important places to start. Horses prone to laminitis will often have to endure a diet which minimises the calories and starch they receive and avoid turnout on pasture. However, it is important not to forget that the laminitis prone equine still require vitamins and minerals. Horslyx Balancers contain a high specification package of vitamins, minerals and trace elements to balance the deficiencies in the diet. The palatable, weatherproof and cost effective lick provides a natural, trickle feed pattern which reduces the chances of sugar peaks. Horslyx Balancers are also very low in starch, which is also important for equines prone to laminitis. They should be introduced gradually and with restricted access, especially for those prone to Laminitis.
Rowen Barbary Forage ‘n’ Fibre For horses in low levels of work and good doers who are often put on restricted grazing Forage ‘n’ Fibre is ideal to use to balance the forage given supplying all the essential vitamins and minerals whilst keeping energy and calories to a minimum. Containing a natural blend of forages and fibres it helps provide the horse with all the necessary nutrients required for overall health and vitality whilst keeping energy levels low. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk
NAF Laminaze Horses and ponies on restricted grass intake require additional support to remain fit and healthy. Laminaze is a unique blend of over 40 ingredients combining with key gut support, bio-available sulphur and targeted nutrients, in a palatable formula to maintain hoof health and improve their diet and lifestyle. Prebiotics and live probiotics are included for their ability to support a stable, healthy gut environment. Naturally sourced antioxidants are present to support the liver. Bioavailable sulphur (MSM) is recommended for supporting healthy hoof growth and strong sulphur bonds within the laminae. Laminaze contains all the key nutrients for optimal dietary support, especially around the time of year when spring and autumn flushes of grass occur. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
Rowen Barbary Solution Mash Solution Mash is a high fibre, high oil feed with under 1% total sugar that is cereal and molasses free. The high levels of oils promote condition and controlled weight gain while helping to provide an excellent source of slow release energy for improved stamina. Ideal for feeding to horses prone to excitable and unpredictable behaviour requiring a non-heating diet along with those that suffer from a starch and sugar intolerance. Fully balanced in essential nutrients and rich in antioxidants, Vitamin E and Yeasacc 1026 along with natural herbs Spearmint, Garlic and Fenugreek. Feed soaked as a soft textured mash. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Allen & Page’s Fast Fibre
▼
Allen & Page’s Fast Fibre is barley and molasses free, making it very low in starch and sugar and suitable for horses and ponies that are good doers, in light work or at risk of laminitis. Fast Fibre contains quality fibre sources as well as soya oil and linseed for essential Omega 3 oils. It is balanced with vitamins and minerals and also contains prebiotics to help maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut.
A Super Fibre conditioning feed, Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product, with added high quality alfalfa for optimum condition and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. This high fibre feed has a high digestibility value providing slow release energy without the ‘fizz’. In turn this also helps generate heat, helping the horse to maintain core body temperature and keep condition. Fibre-Beet also provides a good range of minerals, trace elements and amino acids, and has added biotin for hoof quality. Ideal for horses and ponies susceptible to digestive upsets and very palatable for fussy eaters, Fibre-Beet also has a low sugar and starch content making it suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis. Fibre-Beet can also be used as a forage replacer providing up to 60% of the daily forage allowance and is ideal for veterans even if teeth are poor or missing.

Feed news TopSpec AntiLam TopSpec AntiLam is a pelleted multi-supplement designed to provide 5-way nutritional support for those prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. AntiLam is used and recommended by nutritionists, vets and farriers. AntiLam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high-fibre, very lowcalorie carrier to make it palatable. The formula is very low in sugar and starch and cereal-grain-free, making it ‘Non-Heating.’ Long-term trials at Middle Park Laminitis Research Unit have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed AntiLam. It can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. This unique multi-supplement is so palatable that it can be fed out of the hand to horses and ponies at pasture to provide vital nutritional support. AntiLam should be fed on its own with forage. The forage can be in the form of late-cut, low-sugar, hay and/or unmolassed chops e.g. TopChop Lite, or controlled grazing, or a combination of these, depending on the individual circumstances. www.topspec.com
NAF Superflex Superflex is the right combination; a scientifically balanced ration of readily absorbed Glucosamine and Chondroitin, the highest quality MSM plus the added benefits of a powerful anti-oxidant formula, exclusively designed to address excess free radical build up around the joint. Horses’ joints have to cope with extreme forces and it is commonly the cartilage that is the first part to show wear and tear. The key cartilage nutrients, Glucosamine Sulphate, MSM, Chondroitin Sulphate and Hyaluronic Acid (HA) are well known for their support for the health of both cartilage, and the thick synovial fluid that oils the joint. Research recommends that feeding a combination of the key nutrients allows them to work together more effectively than any one nutrient alone. Superflex contains the right combination of key nutrients in the optimum ratios. Naturally sourced antioxidants are also included to work synergistically with Glucosamine and MSM to support joint health. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes are formulated to be highly sympathetic to the equine digestive system, even when it is compromised by extreme acidity. The formula is very low in starch (UltraLowStarchAnalysis) and sugar and high in fibre but still has a conditioning index of 12MJ/kg making these cubes both ‘Non-Heating’ and conditioning. TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes are ideal in those circumstances where the internal surface of the stomach has been eroded, because they contain very high levels of ß-glucans which form a gel and coat the stomach lining with a protective film. The gel-like stomach contents are less likely to splash the upper squamous epithelium in the stomach. These ß-glucans also slow the rate of passage of feed through the stomach and intestines because of the sticky, gel-like consistency of the feed. In the stomach this means that the periods of time when the stomach is empty and therefore highly acidic, are reduced. It also means that the small intestine has more time to absorb nutrients, reducing the levels of carbohydrate reaching the hindgut and potentially leading to excess lactic acid production. TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes are also highly suitable for any horses or ponies requiring a low-starch/highfibre diet for other reasons e.g. those prone to, being treated for or recovering from laminitis, those that are ‘fizzy’ on high- starch feeds, those susceptible to muscle dysfunction when on high-starch feeds, those needing support for correct limb development, those intolerant to high-starch feeds for other reasons. www.topspec.com
Lifeforce Formula from Alltech Lifeforce Formula from Alltech is specially designed for breeding horses and horses in moderate activity by supporting their immune function. Additionally, the supplement helps support the reproductive system of mares and stallions, while supporting fermentation of feeds and forages in the caecum, enabling your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all feed sources. A 5kg tub of Lifeforce Formula generally provides a three month supply. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk
Baileys Lo-Cal Balancer Baileys Lo-Cal balancer has been providing nutritional support for gooddoers and the laminitis-prone for over 15 years and has consistently provided top quality ingredients at an affordable price. With the complete spectrum of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants required to promote healthy hoof growth, well-being and recovery, Lo-Cal balancer can be fed as the sole concentrate, alongside forage, or with reduced amounts of hard feed, where appropriate. For those who like to feed a low sugar, low calorie chaff with their Lo-Cal, to encourage chewing and provide bulk, Baileys Light Chaff is the perfect accompaniment. This blend of UK-grown alfalfa and oat straw contains no added molasses or sugar and smells delicious, with its addition of dried mint and sprinkling of soya oil. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk
NAF Mare Foal & Youngstock Mare, Foal & Youngstock, is a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement, which provides Calcium and Phosphorous in the correct ration for bone development, with Zinc and Iron present to ensure absorption of those nutrients into the bone. Copper is added for healthy cartilage formation, along with Vitamin E which supports healthy muscle development. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in the equine diet, and helps to ensure protein is properly utilised. Feeding Mare, Foal & Youngstock as directed to the mare and the foal, will ensure the correct micro-nutrient, vitamin and mineral levels are provided for optimum development of the foal. Providing the mare with this nutritional support prior to foaling will enable her to pass on the necessary nutrient levels to her foal. NAF recommend that Mare, Foal & Youngstock is fed daily to the mare from three months before foaling through to weaning, and to the foal up until four years of age. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
NAF M Power M Power is a leading edge nutritional formula to support the natural, healthy development of muscle. A unique natural formula, M Power is rich in amino acids – which, as the building block of protein, are vitally important for muscle tissue growth – and naturally sourced antioxidants which work together with select herbal ingredients to ensure, smooth, healthy muscle function. These primary ingredients are supported by the necessary vitamins and trace elements needed for performance, plus target nutrients, including live yeasts, to optimise the digestive process, enabling efficient utilisation of the key muscle building ingredients. M Power is designed to naturally support muscle development in young, growing horses, or any horse following time off work or showing signs of muscle wastage. Fed as part of the daily diet, M Power will help to maintain optimum muscle strength, power and stamina in fit competition horses. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
