Welcome 42 I 28

love this time of year, the show season is in full swing and there is so much to celebrate, whether it is attending your first show or qualifying for a national championship. This month we feature readers who have done just that, plus lots more. There are 25 pages of show reports, eight pages of Regional Roundup, plus lots of other pages dedicated to local achievements. The Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May is a busy one, but an enjoyable one. I had a lovely (if slightly damp) day at the Heathfield Show on Saturday followed by a beautiful day at Surrey County on Bank Holiday Monday. It was wonderful to see many of the riders at both shows and I marvelled at the work that must go into preparing both themselves and their horses to show ring standard twice in one weekend.

Lots to celebrate Our regular reporter, Alex Kelly had a very successful weekend at both shows. Her broodmare, Middlemarch II stood Sports Horse Breeding Champion at both shows and her foal by Up With The Lark, Sandlings Wait Until Dark won on both occasions. We thought you might like to see a picture. As soon as this issue is finished I will be visiting for foal cuddles!

European Dreams

One young rider who is looking to make her dreams come true this summer is Olivia Moriano. Based in Surrey she rides for Italy and is currently on the short-list for the Junior European Dressage Championships, being held in Holland later this year. You can find out more about this inspiring young lady on page 8.

Royal International At this time of year our thoughts turn to the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. It is one of our favourite shows, not only because it offers five days of top equestrian competition, but because we love meeting so many of you who visit our stand. We are back in the same spot, with lots of competitions and giveaways. We will also be having a special subscription offer, so if you buy Localrider Magazine regularly and haven’t subscribed yet, it is worth considering. Simply Classic Fairfax Saddles The Fairfax Classic GP is a new two-flap GP offering supreme luxury to the discerning rider. Made from sumptuous leather, it has highlycushioned knee rolls add to the comfort factor and features the SimaTree gullet, which can be adjusted as your horse changes shape, plus British wool flocking which means that fine-tuning adjustments can be made on-site by a saddle fitter. The Fairfax Classic Jump is a new and supremely comfortable two-flap show jumping saddle for the competition rider who appreciates a little luxury. Carefully placed blocks are covered with highly-cushioned full-grain hide knee rolls to offer optimum leg support. It features an adjustable gullet plus English wool flocking and Prolite-lined panels for pressure distribution.

Future Star gets Back on Track

The Fairfax Classic Dressage is a traditional two-flap dressage saddle, made from first-selection full-grain hide for the seat and knee rolls, with super soft, double-oiled butt leather on the flaps. The addition of deep cushioning over the knee blocks means the support is softer and more accommodating for the leg than a monoflap design. The panels are lined with Prolite and flocked with British wool.

laire Penfold’s talented event horse, Dantastic suffered a terrible experience as a young horse that has left him with long-term physical and mental issues. Lots of time and patience from Claire and Jake Tarrant of Little Bentley Eventing alongside some help from Back on Track’s infrared technology have ensured that this athletic grey is now out competing and climbing the levels. Dantastic came over from Ireland as a young horse. After Claire bought him, she quickly discovered that all was not well with him. It was discovered that Dantastic had three broken ribs and so Claire successfully began the long road to rehabilitating the horse. Sadly, Claire then suffered an injury herself and so sent Dantastic to Jake’s yard to continue the horse’s journey to recovery. Jake who is a qualified BHSAI Riding instructor has a reputation for taking on problem horses and treating them with kindness and patience. He said: “When the saddle was put on Dantastic he would get very tense under it and not want to go forward.” It has taken plenty of time to get Dantastic both physically and mentally well again. Veterinary and physio work has been supplemented by the use of Back on Track products which reflect back a naturally Jake and Dantastic are now occurring far infrared competing successfully wave emitted by the at BE events body, which increases circulation bringing health and wellbeing benefits. Jake has noticed a big difference in Dantastic’s behaviour since using Back on Track. Jake said: “The Back on Track Mesh Rug significantly cuts down the time it takes me to get Dantastic to relax each day when I get on him. If Dantastic doesn’t have the rug on prior to exercise, I need to spend a good 20-25 minutes doing bending and stretching exercises before he is relaxed and ready to really start work. Following wearing his Back on Track Mesh Rug, after five minutes in walk, he is calm, relaxed and supple. It is fascinating how the company have created their Welltex fabric containing millions of ceramic particles to reflect the far infrared wave back into the body.” The energy that is generated brings nutrients to the muscles and helps remove toxins through the lymphatic system, allowing the muscles to relax and work more efficiently. The horse becomes more supple and ready to work sooner during warm-up, and it is also brilliant during the cool-down period, encouraging the horse to relax and stay calm.

With a stand booked for the Royal International at Hickstead, the team at Equivation are looking forward to showing their products to visitors. As well as their traditional array of metalwork and Equestrian yard solutions, they have several new additions to their range, including coloured stable hardware, supplied in conjunction with Perry’s Equestrian. These products are available in pink, red, green, black and blue, so expect to see stable yards all over Sussex suddenly become awash with colour. To celebrate this new partnership, Equivation and Perry’s are giving away free coloured tie rings to the first 100 people that present them with the voucher which can be found on page 48 at Hickstead. www.equivation.com

New Pro Mesh Boots KM Elite Products have recently launched their new Pro Mesh Boot Collection. The range has something for every discipline including: The Event boot, a Tendon boot for show jumping and the all-round, low profile Hybrid which can be used for most disciplines, including dressage and racing and also as a work boot. These innovative Pro Mesh boots are believed to be the most breathable on the market. They have an integrated layer that offers superior airflow to cool the leg, but stops sand and dirt passing through the outer layer avoiding rubbing and grazing of the leg. They provide excellent impact and abrasion protection and are designed to stretch slightly to allow movement in the joints, offering outstanding comfort. The Pro Mesh shell and comfort lining do not absorb water which can increase weight and may contribute to boots slipping. The unique hexagonal holes reduce the weight of the boot – in fact the medium Hybrid only weighs approximately 130g per boot. The manufacturing process used means no adhesives are used during production, which increases the strength and durability, without compromising on protection and comfort. These boots offer a glove-like fit due to the naturally hypoallergenic polyolefin closed cell foam which is perforated to increase air flow. This material resists mould and bacterial growth and is perfect for horses with sensitive skin. The anatomically shaped, lightweight Pebax strike guard offers exceptional protection as part of a multi-layer protective design. The strike guard is rigid where needed, but flexible enough to conform to the horse’s legs and will not shatter on impact. Holes in the strike guard allow heat to escape from the flexor tendon area.

news Looking for new homes Pussy Cat Lodge have a number of cats looking for new homes. Ivy, was living rough in a pub garden. She survived from titbits given to her by the customers. When she arrived at Pussycat Lodge, she had a sore nose and leg. This was put down to a bad diet and surviving outside. Now she is fit and healthy and well after having rested. She is now looking for a lap to curl up on and dream away. Cynthia is about nine-months-old. She was found heavily pregnant walking the streets at night by a busy road. She must have been owned at one time as she is the friendliest of cats. She is a beauty, so dainty and has a lovely nature. All her kittens have now been rehomed. Cynthia would make an ideal family pet. Wilma is a beautiful tortoise shell and white female, who is approximately a year old, and her black 12-week-old son Shadow, just love each other. She has been a fantastic mum to her five kittens who have all been rehomed now. All of the cats at Pussycat Lodge have been vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and neutered. From endurance horses and eventers to carriage horses, as well as Olga the Ardenne, Maggie demonstrated the importance of fitness to suit each horse’s demands, before heading back to the horsebox park to learn about the importance of cooling-off and the use of electrolytes. The horses were all weighed on the practice’s portable weigh bridge before and after exercise, with some horses showing significant weight loss of up to 14 kilos. Maggie also shared some of her amazing experiences as official coach and trainer for the Mongol Derby entrants (a race across 1000km of Mongolian Steppe which draws riders from across the world).

he most important piece of safety gear you can purchase is your riding hat/helmet. Accidents can happen at any time and having the A cross section correctly fitted hat can help of a Champion prevent or lessen injuries Riding Hat both in the saddle and when handling horses. Your riding hat/helmet must meet current safety standards and it is advisable to buy from a shop with a qualified hat fitter.

Daily testing

There are four main areas of testing for riding hats/skulls to ensure they meet the performance criteria laid down in the current standards. As well as this, hat manufacturers are able to obtain a credited British Kitemark through regular batch testing. A Champion hat is tested every day of the year by The British Standards Institute. Once you have purchased your riding hat, it is very important that you take good care of it to ensure it can offer you the maximum level of protection over it’s lifetime. Dropping your hat, allowing it to roll around in the car etc can cause damage to the shock absorbing polystyrene liner.

ÂŽ

A REPUTATION BUILT ON SAFETY

Keep your hat cool

Your riding hat should be stored in a cool environment and not be exposed to direct heat for drying or placed in direct sunlight under glass such as the back shelf of the car. This is because heating your hat to 70 degrees centigrade and above will break down the protective materials used in construction of your riding hat, especially the polystyrene liner, and this will gradually reduce the level of protection it offers. A protective hat bag is the ideal way to store your hat when not being used to ensure the right conditions are maintained and to provide cushioned protection. If you have an accident in your hat it is important that you always replace your hat and if you have any concerns that your hat might be damaged, replace it. There should be no compromise where head safety is concerned.

Exciting Year Ahead for

The Arundel Equine Hospital

M

Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (Stud Med) MRCVS

any years ago we recognized that we need to expand our hospital and the quest began to find a new site to relocate to. It took a long time to find a suitable location, but we were very fortunate to be able to buy a farm and get permission to demolish the existing buildings allowing us to invest in the building of a brand new, purpose built hospital. This large investment in the practice will allow us to provide our clients and patients an even better level of care.

Why are we building a new hospital? The Arundel Equine Hospital is one of the oldest dedicated equine practices in the country, it was founded in 1951 by Mike Ashton. The current hospital was developed on the existing site, because for years one of the biggest clients for the practice was the racehorse trainer based at Arundel Castle. Due to the number of horses and the limitations of diagnostic technology at that time, the clinic needed to be close to the racing stables for horses to be dealt with. Time has moved on, there is no longer a trainer at the Castle and with the progression of diagnostic and therapeutic technology it now means that we can do so much with horses in an ambulatory fashion, in their home stables. As such we feel that we can now move the hospital to a new location, one that is a little more central to the area covered by the practice and one with a much better road network for horse box access. Not only do we want to move due to geographic concerns, we have reached a point where the current site is too small for the existing numbers of staff. It is also too small for us to develop the new services that we want to provide to our patients and clients.

Where is the new hospital located? The new hospital will be located on the B2133, just half a mile off the A24 outside Ashington.

What services will be provided in the new hospital? We currently provide a huge number of specialist equine veterinary services, but with the new hospital it will mean that we will be able to have the space to put in an MRI and a CT scanner. The MRI scanner will be the first new diagnostic unit to go in, this will allow us to perform standing MRI images. The next phase of the development will be the CT scanner. As well as the new services, we will also have more stables, a smart new surfaced arena and purpose built lameness examination areas. There will be a pleasant client waiting area and meeting rooms where the clinicians can sit quietly and go through the cases that come in with owners. The office space will be massively expanded, as will the lab and the pharmacy that we currently have. There will be a conference room where we plan to hold a series of client information evenings.

What will it mean to clients who find themselves further away from the hospital as a consequence of the move? The ambulatory care of the equine patients in the practice will not change when we move. The vets will still attend yards as they do now and we will still have our van buzzing around from yard to yard with all the digital diagnostic equipment such as x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy. The only difference will be a box journey of a different length in the unfortunate circumstance when a patient needs to come into the hospital, however getting to the new clinic will be so much easier due to accessibility.

What will the new hospital be called? A decision has been made to change the name of the practice to The Sussex Equine Hospital, we will have a smart new logo too.

When will the project be completed? The building work is well on track, Rob van Pelt has been driving things forward at a rapid rate and we are moving into the new hospital so that it will be functional on 24th July.

The Arundel Equine Hospital (RCVS Accredited) located in the picturesque South Downs National Park is one of oldest dedicated equine practices within the UK.

OUR SERVICES • Providing equine veterinary care throughout East and West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire • Routine vaccinations & nutritional advice • Pre-purchase examinations • Lameness and sport horse performance assessments • Mobile digital radiography, endoscopy & ultrasonography • Hospital based radiography, nuclear scintigraphy and full surgery facilities • Dedicated team of 4 experienced stud vets for routine and emergency work • AI and embryo transfer • In-house laboratory – HBLB CEM accredited • Further team of 15 experience equine vets providing a 24/7 ambulatory service and multiple board registered surgeons overseeing hospital care.

Fancy a dip?

Tom Dascombe’s Travelling Head Groom, Christopher Ely, swimming horses in Dubai

Words by Michelle Douglas of the British Horseracing Authority

S

wimming racehorses has many benefits and is becoming increasingly popular in horseracing. Not only does it add variety to a horse’s training regime, many find it an enjoyable experience especially in this hot weather. The water provides buoyancy, which relieves pressure on joints, bones and ligaments. It also provides enough resistance to ensure a thorough workout. This means that swimming can aid both muscular development and maintains cardiovascular fitness. We spoke to Colin Gorman, Assistant Trainer, who works for racehorse trainer Tom Dascombe based at Manor House Stables in Malpas, Cheshire. Their Equine Swimming Pool was built in 2011 and has made a big difference to their training regime. Colin said: “Every horse in our yard swims regularly. We teach horses to swim when they are yearlings and so it becomes part of their daily routine. They would be warmed up on the horse walker and then bought to the swimming pool to swim around five laps each way. Most of them find it relaxing and enjoyable especially if they have small injuries or are recovering from an injury. It helps maintain their fitness without putting pressure on their joints and back and is a beneficial alternative to being ridden. The horses are led down a ramp which gradually gets deeper until they reach around three meters and they can start to swim. We have a member of staff on each side of the horse’s head to guide it round the pool. It is a horse’s basic instinct to swim and the swimming pool is concaved so they don’t bang their legs on the sides. We train all our Head Grooms to swim horses and so it becomes part of their daily job role. They find it interesting and it is another skill to add to their CV.” Many racehorse trainers are adding swimming pools to their training facilities because of the benefits they bring. Both circular and straight swimming pools designs are seen both in the UK and overseas.

Canny Coat Colour Words by Stephen Biddlecombe, Retailer

Every horse has a black, bay or red (chestnut) base colour, although greys are a result of a grey gene.

H

ave you ever given your horse’s coat colour a second thought? According to Animal Genetics UK, who offer DNA typing, every horse has a black, bay or red (chestnut or brown) base colour. This is controlled by genes called ‘Extension’ and ‘Agouti’ genes. The Extension gene controls the production of black or red pigment throughout the coat, and the Agouti gene can modify black pigment; this can include creating black ‘points’ (mane, tail, lower legs, ear rims), for example, a bay, or altering black colour uniformly over the body. The effects of approximately 10 other genes may modify these pigments to provide an array of colours. ‘Colour’ genes act as modifiers on the base coat of the horse, ‘diluting’ the colour, while ‘pattern’ genes modify the coat colour by effectively ‘deleting’ colour. The website animalgenetics.com has a colour calculator, whereby you can input sire and dam coat colour, to see a probability (in percentage) of the offspring’s coat.

Brilliant products to boost coat colour

We all dread training sessions or competition days, when we know our horses will have taken the opportunity to cultivate an interesting ‘look’ consisting of mud and urine stains. Exhibitor Labs Quic Silver colour-intensifying Shampoo, available from £14.80, is a very versatile product and especially useful for white-to-medium greys, albinos, creams and palominos, as it creates startling silver and golden highlights and platinum white markings. It intensifies all natural light colours within the coat and also works as a stain remover. Cowboy Magic Shine in Yellowout, available from £11.28, neutralises yellow stains and brightens equine hair of all colours. While it takes non-permanent yellow stains out of any colour hair, it is of course ideal for greys or coloured / patterned horses, and gives dull hair a lovely sheen. It leaves hair silky, shiny and smelling good. Mane ‘n Tail Spray ‘n White, available from £27.20, is a great, deep cleaning, colour-enhancing shampoo and conditioner with optical brighteners that adds incredible intensity to coats of white or light coloured horses - it cleverly highlights and intensifies white, grey and gold tones, and also helps with the removal of tough stains. All of these products and more are available at www.worldwidetack.com

Any breed, any colour

In a recent feature by the College of Veterinary Medicine at America’s University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, equine surgeon Dr. Annette McCoy, says that in theory, any breed can be any colour. She states that the grey gene ‘trumps’ everything else, so a horse can be born any colour, but if one or both parents pass on a dominant grey gene, the horse will turn grey by adulthood. Therefore, completely grey animals are a result of the grey gene, while ‘greying’ due to age is just representative of the ageing process. Interestingly, the PRE studbook, which covers Purebred Spanish Horses, even has a relatively new clause including all colours of horse, meaning that previously ‘outlawed’ chestnuts are now admitted. The magazine ‘Nature Genetics’ reported recently that modern horses have seemingly ‘lost’ the camouflage which pre-historic horses had; nearly 1,800 horses were studied, more than half of which were Icelandic. (Available at nature.com). Icelandic scientist, Freyja Imsland, described that, (although black, bay or red-bases are the base colours), colouring of early horses was probably dominated by the dun-gene, e.g. producing a grey-gold or tan coat hue, with a dorsal stripe and a darker mane and tail, and a darker face and legs. “Other equine colour variations are believed to have emerged only after humans tamed horses,” she stated. july/august 2017 Localrider 27

Ian Davies announces the launch of his new farriery business

I

an Davies has recently set up his new farriery business in Marlborough. Ian is a registered farrier with over 25 years’ practical experience. During this time he has worked as the chief farrier to the Saudi Royal family, Northern Farm in Japan and the Sultan of Oman. Ian has worked with thoroughbred and Arab racing businesses, studs and bloodstock producers, working with foals, yearlings and youngsters, mares and stallions. Ian says: “I was also lucky enough to hold the post of farrier to the Saudi National showjumping team during my time abroad and worked with an amazing team.” He added: “As chief farrier at Northern Farm, Japan, I managed over 2,000 horses, including those in and out of training, 18 stallions and a team of 16 farriers, so I can comfortably say my experience has been extensive. Each role gave me unique opportunities to experiment with techniques and work with renowned remedial and repair products, including Dr Coles, Redden, Akita and Eustace.”

X-raying the hoof

He has seen the incredible results gained from taking x-rays of horses before and after any acts of farriery, which whilst he appreciates is not common practice in many yards, he has benefited from this unique learning opportunity.

Barefoot techniques

Ian has also studied and qualified in barefoot trimming techniques and explored the holistic approach behind this practice. He says: “Studying barefoot techniques gave me a new view on farriery. I absolutely adhere to the need to give the best care for each individual horse, its workload and its environment. I remain openminded and I believe I can come up with the most favourable outcome for each horse, whether shod or barefoot.” Now back in the UK, Ian is starting up in business again and is ready to work with new clients. His services encompass both traditional and barefoot farrier services. He will be covering the Wiltshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire areas predominately but is happy to travel! Find Ian on his website www.farriery.co or like his Facebook page @IanDaviesandCoFarrier. His numbers are 0778 6503849 or 01672 515247. 16.1hh / 2013 / Liver chestnut / British Sports Horse This elegant young premium graded stallion (SHB[GB]) has impeccable bloodlines for eventing, being a son of the extraordinary Headley Britannia, winner of Badminton, Burghley, Kentucky and an Olympic team silver medal, by the Oldenburg stallion Royaldik whose dam is full sister to Heraldik, the outstanding sire of international eventers. Britannia Royal is a short-coupled uphill horse with excellent conformation and a quick athletic jump. He has a tremendously calm, trainable temperament and has been a pleasure to handle from birth. He has also made an excellent start to his stud career with 100% fertility, from a single covering, on a small number of mares. We are eagerly awaiting his first foals this summer.

She A grand-daughter of the was at the Ascot sales, but not in the sale, as great Headley Britannia, she was there for some polo people to look out of a winning flat horse at, but was too tall for them. and by Britannia Royal A friend told me to go and look at the horse, “why I asked as I’m not interested in buying anything as I have plenty at home!” The owner didn’t want to take her home and the alternative was unthinkable. She trotted up well and a £100 loan from my friend meant she came home with me. I had no idea what I had taken on. Chance as we call her is the nicest kindest mare you could have, we have had her under saddle and she is safe and sane and has a great pop too.” Jane got to know Britannia Royal well during the course of 2016, as he was based at her yard to be shown in the BEF classes and the Young Horse Championships at Osberton, where he was graded with SHBGB. Jane said: “Britannia Royal has a great brain, an interesting pedigree and is an all-round lovely chap so using him was a no brainer. I have already used him again this year.” The filly along with some of Jane’s other foals will be available to purchase at weaning.

Insurance: Are you covered when riding other people’s horses? R iding accidents don’t just happen to horse owners. So if you ride, but don’t own or permanently loan a horse which is insured you could benefit from Rider Insurance. Petplan Equine, one of the UK’s leading insurance providers, recommends taking out its’ Rider Plan which includes cover as follows:

• A choice of personal accident cover for riders aged 5 to 75 years old. • Payment of up to £50 for every 24 hours you stay in hospital. • Tuition fees for riders aged under 18 years if they cannot attend classes because of a riding injury. • Emergency vets fees up to £1,500 for the horse being ridden. • Cover for your riding equipment if it is lost or damaged. • Third Party Liability insurance. (Terms, conditions and excesses apply.) If you have decided to buy a horse and are going to try one for purchase, you should also consider your insurance requirements. You may be covered to ride the horse you are interested in with the owner’s permission, but unless you ask the seller about their insurance beforehand you will not know if this is the case. Some owners may not have insurance or may not know if other riders are covered by their policy so you should consider taking out your own Rider Insurance policy so you know you have cover in place in case anything unforeseen should happen. Petplan Equine’s Rider Plan policy can be taken out in advance and can be cancelled at any time once you have bought your new horse. Insurance is often the last thing we think about as we enjoy riding with friends or in the excitement of trying a new horse, but it is a responsible consideration to keep horse and rider safe. O

ur horses have carefully targeted worming programmes; we poo pick our paddocks; quarantine new horses and rotate our grazing, yet one of the biggest influencers of parasite burdens is unfortunately something we can do nothing about. The weather, most noticeably temperatures and rainfall, have a massive impact on the worms in our horses. It’s so influential that the National Animal Disease Information Service issues a monthly Parasite Forecast for farmers based on detailed Met Office data. The forecast tracks weather variations to highlight potential risks for sheep and cattle. Generally the milder and wetter the better for parasites; warm weather is convivial for activities like feeding and breeding and the damp weather keeps everything motile and ticking along. Spring and Autumn are naturally times of the year when parasites thrive. Ideally what we need our weather to deliver is extremes either side of this - cold, hard winters and hot, dry summers to stop parasites in their tracks.

A worm egg count gives an indication of the redworm (bottom left) and roundworm (top right) parasite burden a horse is carrying

Rainfall and moisture levels

In optimal conditions the most numerous of horse parasites, the redworm, can develop from an egg laid in a dung pile to its infective larval stage in as little as five days. In this time the tiny worm larvae, so small it’s barely visible to the naked eye, can travel about one metre. Impressive enough until we get some rainfall and this multiplies to up to three metres of getaway potential in wet conditions. This is important for survival; most horses won’t choose to graze near droppings so the further away a larvae can wriggle to a tempting blade of grass, the more likely its chance of being eaten by a potential host to continue its life cycle. In contrast hot, arid conditions, of the sort we get very little of here in the UK, spell disaster. Moisture deficit will slow, or even halt, development of the worm larvae and desiccate dung piles, exposing eggs to lethal rays of UV light. This makes harrowing a useful method of parasite control, but only in these conditions. Where there is any moisture present, it will merely serve to spread worm eggs around the pasture, allowing the larvae to penetrate into the protective vegetative layer.

Temperature

Worm eggs are generally made of pretty tough stuff, non-more so than roundworm eggs. The thick, sticky shell of the ascarid helps it to survive temperature extremes in the UK environment for up to 10 years. A portion of redworm eggs will also overwinter, enduring hard frosts to hatch in spring when the warmer weather comes along. Frost is effective at killing off tapeworm eggs but this doesn’t mean one good winter will eradicate them. Tapeworm have an intermediate host – tiny orabatid mites which are adept at wintering in British climes. There will be plenty of these infected grassland mites to see the species through the colder months. Temperature also affects the worms themselves. Redworm activity slows considerably below 6°C and development from egg into an infective larval stage could take several weeks in winter weather. Some however, will find a way to ride out the winter chill until ingested by a horse, where the warm internal temperatures spark them into action and perpetuate the lifecycle.

Protecting our horses

Given normal UK weather a healthy adult horse can follow a very simple plan of testing and dosing, worm egg counting Spring, Summer and Autumn, tapeworm testing every six months and giving a proactive winter dose for the possibility of encysted redworm. However, an unseasonably mild winter and a wet summer can significantly increase the risk of dangerous parasite burdens. in these sustained warm, wet conditions we need to be extra careful about monitoring our horses and consider reducing the time between worm counts to eight weeks, particularly with young, old or vulnerable horses. We should also be aiming to break the lifecycle of the worms mechanically as much as possible with pasture management and be ready to step in with the right chemical at the right time if necessary to ensure parasite levels don’t rise to a level where they might prove damaging to horse health.

It has strong fittings, the front of the rug is padded to stop rubbing and there is fabric along the line of the top of the neck, to prevent the mane from rubbing. It has a belly pad for extra protection and a generous tail flap. It fitted really well, despite plenty of rolling and charging around the field.

Colours: White, Mélange Coral Sizes: 8 – 18 RRP: £44.95 www.equetech.com

LR Comment: This is a very pretty, fun, technical top. It has mesh panels and is made from Aerocool fabric, which is lovely and soft. The fabric is very stretchy, so it allows plenty of movement when riding. Perfect for summer riding.

LR Comment: The Zenith is perfect for wearing for competitions. It is made from a very soft fabric, which moulds to the body, making it extremely comfortable to ride in. The great thing about wicking shirts is, as you warm up the moisture is wicked away, meaning whichever discipline you are competing in you should feel cool and comfortable.

Nettex Electrolyte Range The Nettex Electrolyte Range has been formulated to help replace vital salts that are lost through any form of sweating brought on from strenuous exercise, travelling or stress-related conditions. Ideal for use all year round, especially during the hotter months and competition season, electrolyte supplementation is equally important in the winter months when horses sweat after hunting and during and after travelling. www.nettexequine.com LR Comment: If your horse is performing in the heat, it is quite likely that he should be having some form of electrolytes. The powder is perfect for maintaining your horse on a daily basis, but it is also handy to have some syringes at home and on the lorry. If you compete in particularly hot weather you might find you need to use one of these to replace any salts lost through sweating (remember to provide fresh water as well).

A square halt from Katie Razdik on Whisper

he sun shone brightly for the Riding for the Disabled’s South East Region’s Dressage Qualifier which was held at Hickstead on Wednesday 24th May. During a fabulous day, riders from groups across Kent, Surrey and East & West Sussex converged on Hickstead to show off their accuracy skills in dressage riding. And while the results were being collated, the numerous entries to the annual Arts & Crafts competition were judged by local artists Bob and Pip Sampson. There were 13 classes held across three arenas in all, of which seven were qualifying classes for the RDA National Championships at Hartpury, Gloucestershire in July. Joanna Sale of RDA Regional sponsors, Cowan Architects, presented the prizes. “Each year, the standard and passion that these riders show is exemplary. I’m amazed by what they have achieved and how much enthusiasm they have for their horses and the sport,” she said. Katie Radzik of Cobbes Meadow, Kent was a big winner, managing to qualify twice by winning two classes while brothers, Jon and Matthew Sullivan of Epsom RDA were happy to both qualify in the same class and on the same horse. There were a couple of annual trophies presented where Hope in the Valley riders, Daisy Murray won the Rose Bowl for the Highest Led score and Lottie Mayo won the Cup for the Highest Junior Qualifying Score. Cornillo’s Sharon Kelsall was delighted to win the Astor of Hever horse trophy for the highest score in the nonqualifier classes while Matthew Sullivan, from Epsom RDA, won the tankard for having the Highest Qualifying Score. Annabelle Groombridge from Bradbourne RDA in Kent won the individual class in the Arts & Crafts competition for her Magical Unicorn while Court Meadow (West Sussex) and East Park (East Sussex), were both winners in the group entries. All these Arts & Crafts winners will now go to the Nationals Competition in Hartpury in July. Michelle Charman of Forelock Books, which specialises in pony story collectables for young pony mad readers, donated prizes this year for the highest place junior in each class. She was joined by actress Sue Jamieson (When the Boat Comes In, New Tricks, Grandpa in My Pocket), who is one of her authors and a supporter of RDA.

Do horses get hay fever, and is it the same in horses as it is in humans? Yes they do, says VioVet vet Sophie Wilkinson, and usually it presents in a similar way.

A

lthough Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) is most often seen in horses during the winter months as an allergy to dust in their stables, it can present in some horses during the summer in a similar way to asthma in people. This form is known as Summer Pasture Associated RAO.

What are the signs?

The condition is characterized by airway narrowing and inflammation, as well as mucus production in response to allergens usually pollens or moulds inhaled whilst horses are out in the field. It can occur at any age but is usually seen in horses over nine-years-old. Clinical signs include a cough, increased respiratory rate and effort, nasal discharge, exercise intolerance and flared nostrils. Your vet may be able to hear crackles and wheezes on auscultation of the lungs with a stethoscope. Owners may also notice a ‘heave line’ caused by the increased effort of breathing.

“VioVet have never let me down, they give excellent service at extremely reasonable prices” -Deborah, customer since 2014

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually based on clinical signs but a tracheal wash or bronchoalveolar lavage can be done to confirm the diagnosis. This involves passing a scope through the horse’s nose into the windpipe. Sterile saline is flushed into the airways and collected again. The presence of a type of white blood cell in the sample confirms lower airway inflammation.

Treatment and prevention:

Good management is essential in the treatment and prevention of RAO. Affected horses should be kept in their stable during the spring and summer months or when the pollen count is high. Hay should be soaked to reduce dust and feeding from the floor can help to expel excess mucus. In more severe cases your vet may prescribe medication to open up the airways or steroids to reduce inflammation. These drugs are given orally but in recurrent cases of SPA-RAO, maintaining the horse on inhalers is effective. This ensures the drug is delivered directly into the respiratory tract where it is needed, rather than systemically. It is not uncommon for a horse to develop a secondary bacterial infection, for which your vet will prescribe antibiotics. Having a horse with a recurrent or long-term condition can be very expensive, which is why many people are now choosing to look online for their medication and supplies. It is often more convenient to do so as well, saving time and energy. VioVet stocks a range of prescription medications – visit us online at www.viovet.co.uk or contact us at support@viovet.co.uk for more information.

Whether you own a leisure horse or a competition horse, we’ve selected a range of feeds and supplements to help them feel good this summer

Baileys Performance Balancer Baileys Performance Balancer is the first feed balancer to be awarded BETA’s coveted accreditation as being suitable for horses prone to gastric ulcers. Following in the footsteps of its stable mate, Baileys Ease & Excel, which was launched to great acclaim, last summer, Performance Balancer is targeted at those horses who require a low starch diet but who don’t need all the calories provided by a high specification mix. The launch of Ease & Excel drew a huge amount of interest from horse owners who either know their horses are prone to gastric ulcers or who are simply seeking the benefits of a low starch diet. Many, however, found their horses just don’t need the elevated calorie levels it supplies so Baileys recommended Performance Balancer as a low calorie alternative. Now it has its own BETA recognition as a low starch, low sugar option for horses prone to gastric ulcers yet who are also, essentially, good-doers. Working Horse Who Hold Weight Easily Many riders know that, as workload increases, so do their horses’ nutritional requirements but many also find that a competition mix or cube provides too many additional calories for their “working good-doer”. This is where new improved Performance Balancer comes in as it provided appropriate levels of essential nutrients, without unwanted calories and can be fed as the sole concentrate or added to reduced amounts of mixes or cubes. New Improved Based on Baileys’ own forage and pasture analyses, the formula has been improved to provide increased levels of those minerals found to be lacking in forage, as well as a boosted biotin content and live Actisaf yeast, for a healthy gut. It is also now more concentrated so that feeding rates are reduced and a bag will last longer. New improved Performance Balancer is the perfect option for any working or competition horse who holds weight easily - from the grassroots eventer to the Grand Prix dressage horse supplying quality protein, vitamins and minerals to support top line, performance and recovery to the highest levels. www.performancebalancer.co.uk

Rowen Barbary Leisure Plus Containing a blend of high quality ingredients Leisure Plus is the ultimate high fibre feed for horses and ponies in light to moderate work. Low energy levels are obtained through a balance of highly digestible fibre sources and cooked flaked cereals, ideal for horses and ponies requiring a non-heating diet. Natural herbs Chamomile Flower, Spearmint and Nettle are included to help promote overall health and well-being with dehydrated Carrots also added to help create an extremely appetizing feed. Linseed and Soya Oil are also added to help ensure excellent overall skin and coat condition, along with Calcareous Marine Algae for gut health. Leisure Plus is well balanced in essential vitamins, minerals and trace element to help keep your horse in peak condition. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

HorseHage When HorseHage is fed as the main forage source it can enable you to reduce your horse’s hard feed by up to a third. It contains no chemical additives, mould inhibitors, flavourings, molasses or inoculants and due to its fermentation process, the sugar in HorseHage is considerably lower than in other forages. It is more digestible than other forages too and allows more efficient utilisation of the available nutrients and retains much of the value of fresh grass. www.horsehage.co.uk

Supplements The Lifeforce Range from Alltech The Lifeforce Range from Alltech has been tailored to meet the needs of horses at every stage of life from the early developmental stages as a foal, through the demands of competition, and well into retirement. The Range consists of three all natural, daily nutritional supplements backed by more than 30 years of Alltech’s scientifically proven, fully traceable technologies, containing cutting edge ingredients that fully comply with competition standards, where consistency and safety are a top priority. Each specialized supplement delivers the right balance of natural ingredients to optimize digestive health for horses of a specific lifestyle, providing an effective way of maintaining a healthy horse. Lifeforce Focus is specially designed for leisure and companion horses or those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimise digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies. Lifeforce Formula is a supplement specially designed for breeding horses and horses in moderate activity by supporting their immune function. Additionally the supplement helps support the reproductive systems of mares and stallions, while supporting fermentation of feeds and forages in the caecum, enabling your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all feed sources. Lifeforce Elite is specially designed for competition horses and those faced with stressful situations. It supports a healthy immune system, increases the availability of antioxidants and creates a healthy digestive environment. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

Nettex So Sound Nettex So Sound is the next generation of joint supplements. Its V.I.P. formula works synergistically to provide highly bioavailable joint and muscle support to maximise mobility and help maintain soundness. Glucosamine and chondroitin have long been known to be beneficial as building blocks of joints, however the inclusion of five isolates in So Sound means that less of the parent compound is required to gain the same effect. The synergy of joint support, bone structuring compounds, L-Arginine AKG for lean muscle growth support and herbal extracts for comfort will help your horse stay So Sound. It is a highly palatable, sugar free formula. Regular exercise creates ‘use trauma’ which can trigger arthritis. Research has shown that a lack of key nutrients during periods of wear and tear can reduce the ability for cartilage to repair. So Sound cares for your horse’s joints, maximising comfort to maintain mobility and flexibility. www.nettexequine.com

TopSpec Calmer

Cortaflex HA Super Fenn is specially formulated for competition horses or those in high workloads with excessive wear and tear to their joints. It is currently used by the City of London Police for their horses.

TopSpec Calmer is designed to be fed to horses and ponies with anxious temperaments, particularly those that cannot cope with stressful situations such as showing, travelling and competing. Not all horses are anxious for the same reason so TopSpec Calmer has been developed with much more than a ‘single ingredient’ approach. It contains a pure protected yeast, MOS, B vitamins, magnesium, tryptophan and sepiolite clay, which all act in different ways to help calm and relax responsive horses. TopSpec Calmer is a palatable, caramel-flavoured, additive to be mixed into the feed. It can be fed daily to stressed or anxious horses or occasionally to help horses cope with stressful situations eg, competitions, travelling and fireworks. It can help to improve performance by improving focus and reducing the effects of stress. Some ingredients start to work within two hours, but maximum effect will be seen within three weeks.

For high level competition and endurance horses at events, Apple Lytes is also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support contains an excellent specification of nutrients to help the development and maintenance of healthy joints. Synovial joints are stabilised by a complex network of tendons, ligaments and muscles in and around the joint, and by the joint capsule itself. In ideal circumstances this enables joints to function smoothly and comfortably. It is designed to help support joints subject to excess trauma and/ or repeated wear and tear and is particularly suitable for horses working hard and elderly horses. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support can be fed at a maintenance rate (half the recommended) to support healthy joints. TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support contains a generous combination of Glucosamine (10g/500Kg horse/day) and MSM (10g/500Kg horse/ day). It also contains an antioxidant blend of vitamins C, E, betacarotene and natural tocopherols which help combat excess free radicals around the joint. www.topspec.com

TopSpec Healthy Hoof TopSpec Healthy Hoof is designed to be added to any horse feed to greatly improve hoof quality. It not only includes optimum levels of all the micronutrients that promote hoof quality, but also a broad range of micronutrients that improve the efficiency of the hoof supplement whilst also supporting light work. Healthy Hoof also produces a shiny coat and supple skin. It contains the levels of Biotin (15mg/500kg horse per day), and associated nutrients, scientifically proven to improve hoof quality, including chelated zinc, methionine, MSM, copper, iodine, calcium and Vitamin A, which all improve the effect of Biotin alone.

Magic is a magnesium calmer with a difference. It’s a five star formula that contains a unique combination of herbs and nutrients known to help relax muscle tissue and support concentration. The unique blend of magnesium and herbal support of Magic enables the horse to tackle all that is asked of it, calmly and confidently. Magic Liquid has the advantage of extracting the active ingredients from the herbs, making them more readily available for absorption by the horse. The calming effects can be seen fast. Instant Magic uses bioavailable magnesium combined with a fast acting herbal base for an effective instant calming effect. Instant Magic is recommended for horses who only require the use of a calmer on an immediate, short term basis for specific potentially stressful situations; such as competition, clipping, travelling or a visit from the farrier or dentist. In addition, it can be used to top up the calming effect of a daily Magic supplement as and when needed. www.naf-equine.eu/uk
