Welcome 28 I 30

love this time of year, the outdoor season has started and the countdown is on to the Mistubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. We caught up with Jo Thomas who has qualified her veteran, 23-year-old Kruja Roslyn for the BE90 final of the Mistubishi Motors Cup. Jo has owned Rosie as she is known to her friends since she was two-years-old and it is inspiring to read of their journey to finally achieving Jo’s dream of riding at Badminton. Changes at Localrider We have taken a decision at Localrider to reduce the number of issues we print each year. The December/January issue is already combined and you will see that this issue combines April with May. We will be printing a June issue, a combined July/August issue and two further issues in the autumn, before the Christmas issue. The plan is that by doing a few less issues each year we will have more time to visit shows, interview riders and keep up to date with what is going on locally, and in turn feature more interesting stories and articles in the magazine. In between issues I intend to post news and reports on the website and keep you all informed with the latest equestrian news via social media. There is lots to do, and with the busy summer season approaching it might take a few issues to implement all of our ideas, but these are exciting times and I am looking forward to hearing and sharing more of your stories. Hickstead Tickets The next issue will be on sale on 1st June and will include our Hickstead Derby Preview along with the vouchers for free entry to the Hickstead Derby Meeting, although which days the tickets will be for, hasn’t yet been confirmed. We’ve already reserved our stand for the Royal International Horse Show and hope that many of you will call by to say hello. We like to think it is a friendly stand with lots of competitions to enter and prizes to be won. Remember to keep me posted with all of your news by emailing fiona@localrider.co.uk Good Luck and enjoy the season ahead!

NEWS Equine & Abstract Exhibition

WIN!

S

urrey-based equestrian fine art photographer Carys Jones holds her first solo exhibition - ‘Equine & Abstract’ from 6th to 12th June at the Art Gallery, Denbies, London Road, Dorking, Surrey, RH5 6AA. The free exhibition is open daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm and features a range of beautiful equestrian images captured in Iceland and the French Camargue, along with a handful of more abstract images. The exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to view, buy or just enjoy images of moments spent with horses at rest, at play and in movement in their natural environments. From a black and white image of a lone stallion running on a French shore through to a colour image of a small black Icelandic horse running freely in a field of purple flowers, there’s something for everyone. And every sale supports Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled’s fundraising campaign for new premises, with a percentage of proceeds going to the charity. If you love horses, you will love this exhibition. To coincide with this exhibition Carys is giving readers the chance to win a mounted print of one of her most popular images - one of Icelandic horses running through a fjord in northern Iceland. The image will be printed on a fine art paper and the dimensions (without the mount) are approximately 60cm x 20cm. The mount adds another 2.5cm all the way round. For your chance to win this wonderful print, complete the entry form on page 47. For more examples of Carys’ work please visit her website www.carysjonesphotography.co.uk

Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says: “Watching the fabulous horses competing at Badminton makes you realise what complete, all round athletes they are. With the agility and elegance of dressage, the speed and power of cross country followed by the precision and effort of the show jumping phase these are truly the triathletes of the equestrian world. Human athletes would never consider their training regime complete without several sessions in the gym each week in order to work on specific muscle groups and core strength to enhance their performance on the track or field. Similarly with equine athletes, sports science has made training more effective with less wear and tear from endless distance work. From interval training to gymnastic lunge exercises horses can now be got fit and prepared with less strain.” Dr Hilary Bentley continues: “Many exercises on the lunge increase hind limb strength enabling greater engagement and lifting over the back. This in turn improves lightness of the forehand, strong abdominals and core strength which are all essential for the three phases of eventing. Achieving this is much easier using a good lunge aid such as the EquiAmi which invites and rewards the horse for developing wither lift by softening as soon as they respond. Even at lower levels we ask our horses to do long jump, high jump, sprints, middle and long distance running alongside a mixture of dance and gymnastics so lungeing exercises, as part of your regular fitness training, will get more from your equine athlete at every level.” www.equiami.com

What makes Equitector boots special?

See EquiAmi at Badminton 2016

Equitector produces some of the toughest boots available on the market. The boots are waterproof and rot proof (a problem some boots have) and for your protection they have added a steel toe cap too. For riding there is a stirrup foot balance system built into the boots. This stops that irritating foot slip problem whilst in the saddle, also helping to give you a deeper seat. The unique Equitector Climate Control System will keep your feet warm in winter and in the summer they will keep them cool. www.equitector.com

E-vento boot from Veredus Following extensive research and rigorous testing the E-vento aim to combine maximum protection together with comfort for horses going cross country. The boots are made in micro-perforated neoprene AEROX, together with 3D mesh ducted fabric to guarantee double ventilation.

Fully waterproof the boots don’t absorb or retain water, meaning they stay dry despite weather and going conditions. They are robust and lightweight – allowing greater freedom of movement and flexibility. They boast protective pads in polyurethane foam, which helps reduce the shock felt during high impact. They are also the boots of choice for eventing champions Andrew Nicholson and Oliver Townend. www.zebraproducts.co.uk 8 Localrider APRIL/MAY 2016

NEWS Equisafety sponsor Charlotte Dujardin OBE

E

Davina McCall to feature Shire Horse Race on National TV

lite British Dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin has recently joined Equisafety Limited as a sponsored rider. The UK’s largest specialist in high visibility equine wear, Equisafety Limited is renowned for creating the most innovative and iconic high visibility attire for horse and rider, and the team at Equisafety Ltd is looking forward to working with Charlotte to create a range of high visibility apparel. Nicky Fletcher, MD, said: “I’m thrilled to be able to use my extensive experience to design and manufacture a high visibility collection that will be worn by Charlotte and it is a complete privilege that she has chosen Equisafety to work with on this. She is very passionate about promoting the importance of wearing high visibility wear and I am looking forward to designing some pieces with her.” Said Charlotte: “I am delighted to be working with Equisafety and Nicky, who I liked from the moment I met her. She is so passionate about what she does and with a Degree in Fashion and a Master’s Degree in Technical Performance Sportswear, she brings a whole host of design skills to her products. I cannot stress enough the importance of riders wearing hi-visibility garments when on the roads. I always encourage horses to hack, whatever their level, and want everyone to be safe when they do so. That said, even when we consider ourselves cautious, accidents do happen, so it is really important that high visibility products are worn so that riders can be seen as much as possible. I am really looking forward to working with Equisafety and the team and spreading this message as much as I can.” www.equisafety.com

Sooth-Itch Sooth-Itch helps to relieve itching, soothes and encourages hair to grow back naturally. The product is completely natural and can be applied directly to the skin of horses and ponies. It contains Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Chamomile Oil and Citrepel. www.equine-america.co.uk

Television favourite Davina McCall will be guest of honour at Lingfield Park’s annual award-winning Shire horse race as the event takes on an intriguing twist in its fourth year. The presenter will be featuring the Showerking Flying Feathers Shire Horse Race on a brand new C4 documentary – after challenging a completely novice rider to take part alongside professional jockeys. The programme is an original, exciting and inspirational new health series, which takes extreme examples of some of Britain’s most troublesome health issues and challenges them head on. In one of the case-studies, Davina challenges 28-year-old James to take part in Lingfield Park’s Shire horse race. Davina said: “I can’t wait to see James race at Lingfield. He is the bravest man ever and he’ll be in front of thousands of people. The atmosphere is going to be amazing. He has come so far, I’m so very proud of him.” The ‘Showerking Flying Feathers Shire Horse Grander National’ race, will be held as part of Lingfield Park’s Discover Racing Day on April 9th – the day the Grand National is staged at Aintree. Novice James has been receiving expert tuition in the lead up to the race. He will be joining professional jockeys who will take up the reins and cajole the larger than life equines over a distance of two furlongs in a bid to raise the profile of the threatened breed. The race will be run as a charity race and not under the normal Rules of Racing. Jax Gardiner, owner of Hurst Green Shires, which organises the race every year at the Surrey racecourse, said: “This race is a wonderful opportunity to highlight this amazing breed and show how versatile they are, but the safety of all the riders and the horses is paramount.” www.lingfieldpark.co.uk

Idolo return to Badminton Following a successful year promoting safety products, including their lightweight tether tie, quality lead ropes and handmade pressure halters, Idolo are expanding their brand and product range to offer “Idolo Essentials”, a range of quality, useful products from companies including LeMieux, Haywell Haynets, Equioil, as well as Groomaway & Flyaway to name but a few. Roy and Sue French, proprietors of Idolo, are looking forward to another phenomenal show season, which starts at Badminton Horse Trials in May. FEATURE

RESISTANCE: what does it mean?

Gillian Booth SQP of Westgate Laboratories, discusses the worrying increase of drug resistance in worms.

B

efore worming drugs are first launched on to the market they are rigorously trialled to check that they are effective in killing their target parasites. However, some of the original horse wormers have been around for a long time and are no longer working as well as they used to. This is because the worms are adapting to be able to survive the dose; they are becoming resistant to the drug. It is the worms which are resistant not the horse. Once you have resistant strains of worm on your land they are there forever. The process won’t be reversed by stopping using a particular product for a while.

How does resistance happen?

Every time you worm your horse there are a few worms which don’t succumb. They survive the dose and go on to reproduce making greater numbers of resistant worms for next time, as their babies inherit the resistance gene. If you use the same drug frequently this promotes a whole population of resistant worms. We need to limit the number of times a year that worming drugs are used and be careful which ones we use. This will happen even more quickly by practising ‘dose and move’. If you move the horses to clean pasture immediately after worming only the resistant worm strains will survive and go on to reproduce, so you can see that will greatly speed up the resistance problem on your land. After worming the horses should go back onto the original pasture, diluting the population of resistant worms with those still susceptible to the drug. This may go against all you have been taught in the past and feel wrong, but it will help to slow down worm resistance on your fields.

Refugia

Do some resistance testing to be sure your wormer has worked. This is especially important if you use fenbendazole (Panacur) as there is a huge amount of resistance to this product. Test two weeks after dosing to check efficacy. Keep moxidectin special by only using to treat winter encysted redworm and known wormy horses.

Does resistance matter?

Yes it does! There are no new wormers. If you keep worming your horse and his worms are resistant to that product it will not work. You will still have a wormy horse. If he gets multiple drug resistance there will not be anything left to treat his worms. The solution to this problem for farm animals is to cull the high worm egg shedders. I don’t think we would find that acceptable for our beloved horses.

Resistance testing

Horse owners can check for resistance to a worming drug by completing a resistance test. A worm count is taken to assess the parasite burden in the horse – if necessary a dose is given. Two weeks after the wormer another sample of dung is sent for analysis. If the result has not reduced by between 85% and 95% then the worms are resistant to the chemical used.

Westgate Laboratories POSTAL WORM COUNTS & TESTS

more than just a worm count

Keep some worms in ‘refugia’, that is keep some not treated. Horses with low worm counts do not need worming so their parasites will be in refugia, safe from exposure to the worming drug. Your pasture can also act as refugia as the eggs and larvae already on the pasture when the horses are wormed, will not be exposed to the wormer.

• •

Is there resistance to all worming drugs?

Easy, reliable service for worm counts, pinworm, liver fluke and lungworm tests and the EquiSal saliva test for tapeworm Same day testing and results FREE, friendly, tailored SQP advice

Redworm: Some of the older drugs have a lot of redworm resistance problems, notably fenbendazole (Panacur). There is also some resistance to pyrantel. Even drugs which were thought to have no resistance like ivermectin and moxidectin are showing the first signs. The ERP (egg reappearance period or ‘dosing gap’) for moxidectin is meant to be thirteen weeks but has come down to as low as eight weeks in some studies. This is the first sign of developing resistance.

We can’t prevent resistance in parasites, it’s a natural evolution, but we can slow it down. • Treat only the animals who need it, use test based worm control. • Low numbers of parasites are a good thing. Don’t try to be worm free. • When you do need to dose use the correct dose. Under dosing increases resistance. The parasites may survive. ‘Whatever doesn’t kill me makes me stronger’ applies to worms. • Don’t practise ‘Dose and move’. • Quarantine new horses, test and treat appropriately. • Manage your pasture, poo picking, cross grazing if possible and not overstocking.

LEGAL

How to buy a Horse – The New Law Michael McNally from Warners Solicitors explains the new Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the impact it has had on buying and selling horses.

R

eaders of this magazine who have particularly good memories may recall that the November 2014 issue contained an article by me entitled “How to Buy a Horse”. In that article, I explained the law on breach of contract, misrepresentation and the Sale of Goods Act and explained what rights a purchaser had when they found that the horse they had bought turned out to be not as described. The law has now, to an extent at least, changed.

Consumer Rights Act

Sale of Goods legislation was first introduced at the end of the 19th Century and the most recent version of the Sale of Goods Act was in 1979 (with some subsequent amendments). Now, however, we have the Consumer Rights Act 2015. This applies to all contracts entered into from 1st October 2015. The purpose of the change is to transfer all provisions relating to consumer contracts from the Sale of Goods Act (and all other consumer related legislation) into one single piece of legislation, the Consumer Rights Act. What this means is that, in a contract where a consumer buys from a trader (whether goods, services, or digital content) and something goes wrong, the relevant law and remedies are now to be found in the Consumer Rights Act and not in the Sale of Goods Act (the Sale of Goods Act and other related legislation will continue to apply in business to business contracts). Having said that, much of the old law remains the same. Two of the key provisions of the Sale of Goods Act required that goods (including a horse) had to be of satisfactory quality and fit for any purpose which the purchaser made known to the seller. These provisions are preserved in the Consumer Rights Act 2015 in much the same format and so if, for example, you told the seller that you wanted a very safe horse, but it bucked all the time, then the seller would be in breach of the implied terms under the Consumer Rights Act.

Classed as a Trader

It is important to emphasise again that this only applies in relation to consumer contracts – i.e where you buy as a consumer and the seller sells as a trader. If you are buying a horse purely for your own enjoyment (and not as part of a business you run) then you will be a consumer. If the seller sells in the course of a business then the seller will be a trader. It can, however, be difficult to be certain whether a seller is a trader or not, particularly in the horse world.

Sellers often try to claim that they are not traders, on the basis that they only occasionally sell horses. Even if that is true, the seller would still be a trader if they are running an equestrian business. So, for example, if the seller runs a livery yard and only occasionally sells horses, they will still be considered to be a trader, because they are running an equestrian business. The fact that they only sell the odd horse will generally not matter. On the whole, therefore, the new law is much like the old law – but in some ways it strengthens consumer rights. For example, under an associated piece of legislation, The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, any information concerning the main characteristics of goods is binding on the seller. So, if the seller tells you key information about the horse, then that will amount to a binding contractual term. This is important, because it means that, in bringing a claim against the seller where the horse is defective, the purchaser no longer needs to rely on the Misrepresentation Act 1967 – i.e it is no longer necessary for the purchaser to show that the seller made a representation about the horse’s characteristics which the purchaser relied on when agreeing to buy the horse. From now on, the effect of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 is that key information supplied is binding on the seller as a contractual term. Unless agreed otherwise, the seller must deliver the horse without delay and in any event no more than 30 days after the date of the contract – failing which, you can treat the contract as at an end.

Right to Reject

If a horse turns out to be defective within the first six months after purchase, then it is treated as being defective at the point of sale and remedies include the right to reject, to have a replacement or to claim compensation. Nonetheless, it is important to bear in mind that, under the new law, the right to reject the horse only applies for 30 days from the transfer of ownership or possession. It is, however, important to emphasise again that this new, stronger, legislation still only continues to apply where you buy the horse from a trader. If you buy from a private seller, then the basic position is that “caveat emptor” applies – let the buyer beware. That does not mean that you do not have a claim, but you will not be able to rely on the Consumer Rights Act – you would instead have to show that the seller was in breach of contract or guilty of misrepresentation – i.e the seller said or wrote something before you agreed to buy the horse which turned out not to be true. There are now enhanced powers for public authorities to investigate breaches of the Consumer Rights Act and to take enforcement measures and so, in the case of serious breaches of the law by a horse dealer, you should still contact your local authority who may take action, for example under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968.

5 Stage Vetting

Finally, do not forget to have a 5 stage vetting carried out on the horse before you buy it. While the new law does strengthen the purchaser’s rights, it is much better to avoid getting into legal disputes in the first place. Having the horse checked by a competent vet is likely to find many problems before it is too late. Make sure also that you ask the seller all the right questions. Even if the seller will not sign a contract, at least make your own written notes of what the answers were to your questions. Finally, do check carefully all the horse’s documentation, including the passport and details of breeding. I can assure you from my 30 years’ experience as a litigator that it is not only cars whose identity is sometimes forged. 14 Localrider APRIL/MAY 2016

Dante Range from Black Country Saddles

ew from Black Country Saddles are the Dante Dressage and Dante Jump saddles. Both saddles have been designed for optimum performance and a stylish modern appearance.

For Dressage

The Dante dressage saddle features a sleek look and a close contact design, which allows the rider to feel closer to the horse. This saddle also includes a narrow twist, which is preferable for some riders. The design helps to keep the rider in a forward, upright position to maximise effectiveness when in the dressage arena. extensive research and development was undertaken in the development of the saddle and this has contributed to its ability to optimise the position of the rider. a squared-off cantle provides a slimmer look from the back, which enhances the elegance of the saddle. The saddle flap is also square, as opposed to rounded, which creates a soft angle and sophisticated look. The skirt also features an innovative design, which really catches the eye. in addition, the head nail is square, adding to the unique appearance of this saddle. This saddle features an internal or external knee roll. The exemplary quality of this saddle is shown through the calf covered leather it is made from, giving a soft and supple feel. it is available in black, brown or oxblood in sizes 17 to 18.5 inches, for a price of £2,495.

PUT TO THE TEST

Whicker Hat Liner The Ultimate Riding Hat Liner from Whicker keeps the inside of your hat dry, clean and hygienic. The liner fits inside your hat without needing any glue and the design is so thin it won’t interfere with the fit of your hat. If your hat is already less than pristine inside, that doesn’t matter as the liner will ensure that the smells won’t seep through into your hair. Depending on how often you ride, the liners should be replaced weekly, fortnightly or for some once a month. Each pack contains five liners and costs £9.99. www.whicker.uk.com LR Comment: The Whicker Ultimate Hat Liner is a fantastic idea. It is simple to fit into your riding hat and once there, I soon forgot about it. It was great to take my hat off at the end of the day and not be greeted with the normal horsey smell, just like when you have a new hat.

For Jumping

For jumping, the Dante Jump saddle encompasses similar features to the dressage design. it incorporates a close contact design with a narrow twist, enabling the rider to sit closer to the horse’s back. The squared cantle design gives a stylish finish and really makes the saddle stand out from the crowd. This saddle has been developed with skilled craftsmanship following extensive research to provide the show jumping and event rider with all the technological advances available today. in doing this, the Dante Jump saddle enhances the rider’s position and contributes to maximising their effect. Standard size knee blocks mean the riders are not restricted and are able to adjust their position when necessary. The highspec quality of the saddle is enriched through the use of calf skin covered leather, giving a luxurious feel and appearance. The Dante jump is also available in black, brown or oxblood and comes in sizes 17 to 18.5 inches, at a price of £1,935. Well-Gel! Words by Stephen Biddlecombe

A

s the inventor of original gel wonder-pad, I thought I would share with you my journey to bring it to the equestrian market place. In 1999, scant scientific research had taken place to assess the forces applied to a horse’s back when ridden, and the benefits of saddle pads were poorly understood; yet I was convinced that an innovative gel product had a place in the equestrian marketplace to help protect horses’ backs and offer shock absorption. My research began its development that year, and The Gel-Eze launched three years later after significant research. It is now exported to nearly 40 countries worldwide.

Protecting the horse’s back

Technology has advanced a great deal in recent years, and many studies have been conducted into the pressure distribution achieved from different saddle pads. It is widely acknowledged that products with shock absorbing capabilities can help protect a horse’s back, and our range of saddle pads is widely used by many riders worldwide. Initially, no-one had seen material like my gel product before. Some people mistook its slight sticky feel as a gimmick to ‘stick’ the saddle in place, which isn’t the case at all – the anti-slip properties are achieved through the manufacturing process. Back in the 1990s, I had strong professional links with Italy, where the Gel Eze range has always been manufactured, and came across the gel product with my business associate, Mario Fraticelli. It was being used for racing bicycle seats, yet I knew from my experience as a horse rider, and also as a wholesaler and distributor of equestrian products, that it had a place within our market too. I approached the manufacturers and developed a mould for the first product, an Under Bandage. This was a revolutionary product, in as much that it was the first of its kind to be used in the equine industry in a stable form – previously, all therapeutic gel pads had to be in sealed packaging, due to their liquid form.

Above: Stephen Biddlecombe, who pioneered the use of gel products.

Gel-Eze products are blended with Sheepskin for this pad with ‘comfort cushions’.

A Spanish trail riding company in Sotogrande utilises Gel Eze pads to aid horse health and comfort.

Revolutionary

This fantastic material was non toxic, possessed the shock absorbing characteristics of a liquid, but could be placed directly on the horse’s back and onto the legs. I could see a gap in the market for a product that could be shaped and cut to different thicknesses, retained its temperature very well, and could therefore be used as a protective pad. The Under Bandage was revolutionary, as when placed in a freezer, it absorbs and retains enough of its temperature to be used as an excellent cold compress. No matter what design or thickness is required, within certain parameters, Gel Eze moulds can be manufactured to suit the need. The manufacturing process also allows for perforation of the product The Gel products to encourage airflow and aid body cooling, and may be placed the gel also boasts a UV filter, to protect the directly on the product from sun damage. So, after the Under horse’s back or legs. Bandage had launched successfully in the UK and Italy with the help of some prominent distributors, I launched the Gel Saddle Pad and Wither Pad to the market in 2003. These products are still popular today and are simple, non-slip gel pads that offer shock absorption and also help prevent the saddle from moving. They can be placed directly onto the horse’s back and come in various weights and thicknesses – the thicker and heavier the gel, the more pressure is absorbed. Today’s scientific technology allows us to produce excellent saddles that are more well-fitting than they have ever been – however, not every horse is the perfect shape, and saddle pads allow us to enhance the benefits that a saddle gives. There’s still a misconception by some people, particularly at grass roots level, that using a saddle pad is just ‘covering up’ a badly fitting saddle, or filling the space caused by a saddle that is too big – however, it is time to move on from that point of view. A quality gel pad can enhance a saddle’s fit, particularly with today’s modern saddles that are not all stuffed with wool. APRIL/MAY 2016 Localrider 27

Are you ready for the Season ahead?

Words by Fiona Rafferty BSc Hons ACII

T

here are lots of things to think about at the start of the competition season, with preparation and planning being key. However, evidence suggests that one of the most often overlooked items is insurance cover. For many the new season brings with it new goals, but have you checked to see if your insurance cover is adequate? Each insurance company will have different terms and conditions in their policy, but horse insurance is generally divided by the activities you are undertaking on the basis that the more highpowered the competition you are taking part in the more likelihood there is for injury. For example petplan Equine has seven different Activity Groups. Group 1 covers Horses used for Breeding, Horses at Grass, retired Horses, Group 3 includes riding Club, pony Club and local Shows, while Group 4 includes Dressage below Elementary level, Unaffiliated Eventing, Show Jumping and BE Eventing at BE90 level. Group 5 includes Dressage at Elementary level and above, BE Eventing at BE100 level and above. Groups 6 & 7 include Advanced Eventing, polo, Team Chasing etc.

Are you adequately insured?

For most of the riders we feature in localrider magazine i could foresee movement during the competition season between the groups mentioned above, particularly between Groups 3 and 4, and Groups 4 and 5. The information here only reflects the division in activity by petplan Equine and whilst most other companies will have similar divisions, it is important that you study the documentation provided annually by your insurance company and if you are unsure ring and have a chat to the underwriter or broker who provides your cover. remember if your insurance only covers you to compete at BE90 level and you move up to BE100 level without notifying your insurance company and something happened to your horse while you are competing and he needed expensive veterinary cover, it is unlikely that your insurance would provide the cover and pay for the vet’s bill. We know of at least one reader of localrider to whom this happened.

Great Cover

These days we are regularly reminded to compare the costs of our domestic insurance policies and i have observed this filtering down to equine insurance. However, it is important to remember it isn’t all about the cost, and you need to compare the cover provided. For example, if you don’t have your own transport, the fact that the cover provided by a particular company includes transport to the vets in an emergency, could be viewed as a bonus. Whilst not everyone chooses to have veterinary fees cover on their insurance policy, it is generally the one which gives most of us the greatest peace of mind. insurance is there to help in the event of the unexpected. i am sure many of you will be familiar with the ‘accident prone’ horse. A friend once told me that she turned her new horse out in the same field her other horses had grazed for years, but this one managed to find something, somewhere to cut himself on. His accident-proneness continued for the next few years. in cases like this, the owner was grateful to have Veterinary Fees cover, as it meant her horse could have good treatment quickly and she knew if he had to go to the Vets for further treatment, she was covered (up to a limit, normally £5,000) and just had to pay her excess. This example is why most of us choose to insure our horses, but the best outcome should be regarded as the one where you never have to make a claim.

Rise to the top with an Apprenticeship in Horseracing F

ollowing Apprenticeship Week in march, Careers in racing - the marketing campaign run by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) to promote training and career opportunities in the horseracing industry - is highlighting how apprentices in horseracing can progress to the top of the career ladder. Zoe Elliott, Careers marketing and recruitment manager said: “An apprenticeship is the perfect way to start off in the exciting world of horseracing. it can lead to a rewarding career and is the perfect way to ‘rise to the top’. As the second largest spectator sport in the UK, horseracing is a major, growing industry and we have a lot to offer, including a commitment to welfare, supporting staff and, competitive pay and conditions. many people are unaware of the sheer number of opportunities available, either working directly with horses or in the events and hospitality sector.”

Skills gap

Zoe Elliott continued: “There are some skills gaps in the sector. in particular,

case studies

we have identified a shortage of people working directly with horses - we are addressing this by recruiting apprentices on racehorse care courses, by raising the profile of the sector and by demonstrating the career paths available. The job market is strong at the moment and demand for qualified, experienced and committed staff is high. Taking an apprenticeship can be the perfect first rung on the ladder.” The promotion of apprenticeships is being supported by Seamus mullins, racehorse Trainer and president of the National Trainers Federation. Seamus said: “As a racehorse trainer in Wiltshire with 50 horses in training, i have 20 staff working for me and many of them that have studied racehorse care via the apprenticeship route. i fully support apprenticeship training as a great way to enter the world of racing. There are numerous examples of people who have progressed rapidly in racing following their apprenticeship and i would encourage anyone keen to work outdoors and with horses to look at the training and career opportunities available in horseracing.”

Training is free

For young people aged under 19 working in a racing yard, an apprenticeship is an essential part of their career in horseracing, as employers must offer this route. Specialist training providers across the UK offer horseracing apprenticeship opportunities at a variety of levels – training is free for young people aged 22 or below and open to beginners. The Northern racing College and British racing School offer a work based programme with a period of initial training in their specialist facilities, where young people can learn to care and ride racehorses first hand. Haddon Training offer a work based programme and for those who wish to follow a nonriding route there are non-riding options available - including working on the breeding side of the industry via training at The National Stud. Zoe Elliott at the BHA continued: “Our message is simple. An apprenticeship in the horseracing world is a highly respected, valued route into the industry and can take you anywhere – you can truly rise to the top.”

Apprenticeships in Horseracing offer fantastic opportunities to work in different areas of the sport. Here we discover more about three current apprentices and what the experience gained and training means to them.

Kate Phizacklea Kate Phizacklea is a 22-year-old apprentice from Cumbria, based at Dan Skelton Racing in Alcester, Warwickshire. Kate is taking an apprenticeship in Racehorse Care at the British Racing School. Kate talks about the Cheltenham Festival, how she became interested in racing and her career path so far. “I got into racing from a young age watching the races at my local track Cartmel, and then after discovering the British Racing School I found the opportunity for me to start my career. Between leaving school and starting at The British Racing School, I had three parttime jobs at the same time: I was breaking in horses and ponies at an equestrian centre, working in a tack shop and cleaning at a café, so I was used to a busy lifestyle. I attended the British Racing School in April last year for nine weeks and I’m now on an apprenticeship in Racehorse Care with Dan Skelton Racing. Prior to that I had two week’s work experience at Rebecca Menzies in Yorkshire. My ultimate career goal would to become a Trainer and be good at it! But also, since joining a yard and working in racing, I would love to get my amateurs licence and ride a few winners in point to points. Having a runner in Cheltenham is beyond anything I could have hoped for and I’m lucky enough to have had two entries at the Festival in March. Having watched the festival since I was a young child, it’s an absolute dream to be able to take my horses there and have an experience that not many people can have. I have to thank Dan Skelton for the opportunities I’ve had having only worked for him for such a short time. He’s the best and I honestly don’t think there’s a better person to have as a boss. I’d encourage anyone with an interest in horses and working outdoors to try an apprenticeship. Learning whilst you earn is really helping to improve my future career prospects and I love it.” 42 Localrider April/mAy 2016

Ana Rodriguez Marray Ana Rodriguez Marray is a 23-year-old apprentice Stud Hand, based at Newsells Park Stud in Hertfordshire. Ana is taking an Apprenticeship in Work Based Racehorse Care (Breeding Option) at the National Stud in Newmarket. Ana talks about how rewarding her career in the industry has been so far. “My family own national hunt racehorses and my interest in the industry began there. I heard about the course at the National Stud when I was at the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales with Nigel TwistonDavies, who runs one of the UK’s most successful jumping yards, and through the Careers in Racing website. I started my training at the National Stud, gaining a Level 1 in my course, and started to gain experience. I was then placed at Newsells Park Stud, after I finished the theory-side of my nine-week preapprenticeship course earlier this year. I decided to take an apprenticeship as it is the best way to learn how the industry works. You get experience and gain knowledge from the very bottom. As an apprentice Stud Hand, a typical day involves turning out horses, mucking out, accompanying vets as they do their rounds, farrier work and grooming. I work with mares who are in foal, and mares who have foals. I had the best time at the National Stud: everyone was there to learn and have fun at the same time. It was an amazing experience. My course involved a mixture of practical and theoretical elements. In the mornings we did the practical work including mucking out and leading horses, and in the afternoons we worked on the theory including learning about foaling and grooming. I enjoyed the sale work we did at Tattersalls, the main auctioneer of race horses in the United Kingdom and Ireland. To me, the most rewarding part of the job is getting to know each horse and being able to grow with it, becoming more confident in myself which makes my job much easier. The most challenging part to me was the work with thoroughbreds. I had never handled thoroughbreds before, and having to do so right

from the beginning was a scary prospect, but with people around me that had believed in me meant my confidence grew. I truly believe that the experience I am gaining with Newsells Park Stud will help with my future career. I think the most important skills to have are dedication, to be willing, and to be a team player. You need to have a questioning attitude: always ask questions! Most importantly, people need to remember that this is a lifestyle choice – it isn’t just a career. For now, I’m focusing on finishing my apprenticeship and Level 2 with National Stud. Beyond that, I’d like to do some more yearling work (work with young horses of between one and two-years-old) either at Newsells Park Stud or overseas. I’d also like to get more involved in the bloodstock side. I would encourage anyone with an interest in this world to consider a career in horseracing, even if they have no experience. It’s the best choice I’ve ever made. The one piece of advice I’d give to anyone considering a career in the industry is to be prepared to work as you’ve never worked before: but also be prepared to be very happy with everything that you do. This job is a pleasure, not a chore.”

Sam Burton Sam Burton is a 16-year-old racing groom/work rider at Sally Randell Racing, based in Swindon. Sam is taking an apprenticeship in Racehorse Care and is training with Haddon Training. Sam talks about his apprenticeship and how influential his family has been in his career. “My family has always been involved in racing, so it has always been my ambition to work in the horse racing industry. I started out by working with a trainer when I was 14. My work involved riding work with jockeys and I gained lots of experience – for example, I learnt how to jump out of stalls. It was my mum that encouraged me to take an apprenticeship - I chose this route as I could keep working whilst studying. I’ve been in my current role for just over a year. On a typical day I get up at 7am, and have to make sure the horses are mucked out properly and exercised. I get to ride throughout the day and there’s lots of mucking out involved! I go home at between 12 and 12:30, then come back in the early evening at around 4pm for the evening shift at the stables. I’m taking an apprenticeship in Racehorse Care – my course involves horse care and health and safety and takes between 12 and 18 months to complete. Someone from the Training Provider visits me each month and I have homework to do. For me, the most enjoyable part of the course is researching new and alternative ways of doing things. The most challenging part of the course for me has been the maths section, however I was helped to find a method of learning which suited me. I love my job and find it really rewarding when a horse from the yard wins a race or runs particularly well. To do my job you need a variety of skills – most important is the ability to ride, along with a knowledge of horses. But you also need common sense and to be a good team player I think my job prospects will improve as a result of completing my apprenticeship – the experience of learning whilst working has really helped me. The one piece of advice I’d give to someone thinking of working in the racing industry is work really hard and make the sacrifices: they are worth it. In the future I would like to be a jockey. I want to go conditional, then professional and be the best jockey in the world!”

Improving Horse Problems at Feeding Time Words by Linda Parelli

There is a savvy way to do everything with horses. The more you learn about horse problems, being able to read situations before anything goes wrong and knowing what to do about it—the more safety and success you will have.

F

eeding time can stir up emotional and dominance-based behaviors in horses. In the herd environment some of the biggest pecking order battles occur over who gets to drink or eat first. Even though your horse may not be kept with other horses, this behavior is still a strong part of his instincts. You may find your horse performing these same behaviors with you. Here are some of the most common behaviors: • Ears back • Charging or kicking at you • Pacing, head tossing, pawing and other demonstrations of impatience • Aggressive behavior towards other horses • Anxiety Most of these behaviors are actually caused by people scheduling regular feeding times and allowing horses to rush to their feed before being invited. The following information is meant to teach you how to change these patterns and thus reshape your horse’s behavior… not to mention keep you safe.

General Feeding Principles

place they see you when you come to get them for other reasons. Provide plenty of room between horses if you are feeding a group in one place.

“dominant horse”, you should adopt the same behavior that dominant horses do at feeding time: “Stand back until I give you permission to eat!”

Avoid battles between horses It is natural for horses to play dominance games over things like feed and water. Help avoid wars by feeding the dominant horse first and by allowing lots of space between feed buckets—a minimum of three horse lengths. Make sure a horse is never fed in a corner where he can be trapped.

Don’t cause your horse to get crabby In the early stages of learning the Parelli Method and feeding your horse, don’t mess with your horse after he starts eating. Eating and drinking times are when horses are most inclined to assert their dominance, so you don’t want to invite potential problems right now. Once you allow your horse to come to his feed, smile and leave. It’s important that your horse understands the ritual and to realize that he is not dominant over you, which is especially tested at feeding time. Only then will it be safe to stroke or pet him while he’s eating.

Don’t feed at exactly the same time every day Allow a two-hour window for feeding (for instance, anywhere between 5pm and 7pm). Horses learn habits very quickly. If you are regimented in your feeding times, you will teach horses to become demanding, impatient and emotional if you are late.

Create a conditioned response Establish a call or whistle for every time you arrive to feed or to get your horse to play. This is called a “conditioned response”. You want to program a habit in your horses of having them come when you call. Don’t let horses push on you. Don’t get caught in between two horses involved in a dominance competition at feeding time.

Create a sweet spot Feed at the place you want your horses to draw toward, like the gate. Some people establish feeding places in pastures that are a long way from the gate. You want the gate to be a sweet spot, and not only the

Give horses permission to eat At first you might want to carry a Carrot Stick so you can drive horses away from you. Then ask them to wait until you invite them to feed by smiling and walking away. Because you are aiming to become the

FEATURE Jayne Ross has won four Royal International Horse Show Supreme Championships and numerous other Ridden Championships.

Turnout Tips from the Top with Absorbine The Absorbine Gleam Team of sponsored riders have a wealth of experience in different disciplines and here they give their top tips for a beautiful turnout. Jayne Ross and the team at Carol Charlotte Dujardin Bardo’s Moor Farm are renowned for producing horses across the wide range of showing classes and having repeated successes at the very highest levels of the sport. Jayne has produced no less than five Horse Of The Year Show Supreme title winners, and four Royal International Horse Show Supreme Champions. Charlotte Dujardin always looks immaculate in the dressage arena, reflecting the polished performance that has won her record breaking World, Olympic and European championship titles. Jo Bates and her daughter, Holly, run a small yard producing dressage and show horses. Jo has a wealth of experience having produced HOYS champions and top international dressage horses, and her attention to detail is evident.

Jo Bates

Whichever discipline you are competing in, stunning turnout is always important. There are many, many things you can do to ensure both you and your horse look your best when out competing, whether in the show ring or in any other discipline. Plan ahead

Trim your horse’s ears a few days before the show

Don’t wait until the day before the show to start organising your turnout. Ensure that you have pulled your horse’s mane and tail if applicable and carry out any pre show trimming several days before the show. The ears and under the jaw should be carefully trimmed to give a clean, sharp outline and the feathers on the legs should also be trimmed. If you are showing, you should check the turnout requirements for your class as some types are shown with more hair than others. Make sure you trim your horse a couple of days before the show as this will save a huge amount of time on the day prior to the show, and will also make sure that any trim marks have time to disappear. Also don’t forget your own turnout, check your show riding gear is clean and ready to go.

Wash your horse the day before the show

Applying Absorbine SuperShine Hoof Polish

Bathing your horse

Give your horse a thorough bath the day before a show and take care to make sure the mane and tail are clean. Ensure that you give your horse a good rub with a towel to help dry him and keep him warm after his bath. “I use ShowSheen 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner on all our horses. If the greys and coloureds have any stable stains the ShowSheen Stain Remover and Whitener is a great pre-treatment. Spray it on the stained area and leave it for a few minutes before washing the stain away. Then spray with ShowSheen Original Hair Polish and Detangler to stop the dust and bedding sticking to the coat and tail,” says Jayne.

Hooves

Try and leave five days or so in between the farrier visiting and taking the horse to a show. Charlotte Dujardin says: “It is always important to take your horse to a show with his feet looking at their best. Depending on which discipline you are competing in, dress your horse’s hooves with a good quality hoof oil or hoof polish. We use Absorbine SuperShine clear hoof polish on pale hooves, and black on dark hooves. It dries really quickly and is easy to apply.”

SHINE

Holly applying the Quarter Marks

Stunning Quarter Marks

Top show producer Jo Bates has some top tips to perfect your quarter marks. She explains: “We apply quarter marks using ShowSheen Original hair polish and detangler, a Mitt, a metal mane comb and a body brush. Spray the whole hind quarters with ShowSheen, get a good covering and wipe down with the mitt. Using the metal comb, starting from the top of the quarters down to the point of the hip, do three parallel stripes. These are appropriate for hunters and riding horses, but for hacks or ponies then a checker board pattern is usually used. Then use the body brush for the shark’s teeth. Starting at the centre of the hair whirl, bring the bush up and round towards the rear of the horse, then make a second stoke in a more downward direction. Repeat, moving down the quarters. Four or five “sharks’ teeth” are appropriate dependent on the size of the horse. Don’t use ShowSheen on the saddle area as it will make it slippery!”

Grooming Kit Essentials from Absorbine Absorbine ShowSheen Original Hair Polish & Detangler produces the finest show-ring shine. ShowSheen is enriched with Pro-Vitamins and Silk Proteins to nourish the coat. It makes coats smooth and sleek, and it accentuates body tone and definition.

Absorbine Stain Remover and Whitener contains Oxi-Erasers to lift out stains, simply sprays on and rinses off. For the toughest stains it works as a powerful pre-treatment spray. It is colour safe and does not contain any bleach. Absorbine ShowSheen 2 in 1 Shampoo and Conditioner contains Pro-Vitamins to help nourish the skin and strengthen hair. It deep cleans and conditions in one step to leave hair soft, strong and manageable without stripping natural oils. ShowSheen 2 in 1 Shampoo also revitalizes and brightens the coat and comes in a bottle with a safety lid to prevent any spillages.

Absorbine SuperShine Hoof Polish gives hooves a magnificent mirror-like finish. Its quick-drying formula helps prevent dirt and dust from settling on the show-winning shine of the horse’s hooves. It seals out excess moisture to harden soft hooves, but will not harm feet as the product does not penetrate beyond the surface of the hoof wall. Available in Clear or Black.

FEED NEWS

Why Fibre is so important to the Laminitic As spring arrives, Dr Tom Shurlock reminds us all of the importance of fibre for horses and ponies prone to laminitis…

W

e are being endlessly warned of the danger of spring grass, high starch and sugars, over feeding and obesity, but perhaps we can turn this around for what is right for our horse. For people there is increasing awareness of the problems that the wrong diet, or over eating can cause. Anything from heart disease to diabetes, and the same is true for the horse. Many, but not all, cases of laminitis, can be caused by feeding the wrong nutrients at the wrong amount. For a systemic disorder such as Cushing’s or Insulin Resistance (which has many similarities to diabetes), diet can help reduce the symptoms of laminitis that can occur.

Feeding for energy We feed starch, sugar and oil to our horse for energy, to fuel their metabolism and activity because that is how we feed ourselves. But we are omnivores and have the capacity for digesting a diet with 60% starch and high levels of fat. The horse on the other hand has a different emphasis on digestion and can only really handle 20% starch/sugar, less so if it is a laminitic. So where can horses get the energy to perform at a reasonable level if we have to restrict sugar (starch is a long chain sugar) and oil?

Fibre We know horses eat grass, hay and haylage and this supplies slow release energy that comes from the fibre, but once we know more about this process, we can see how reliance on sugar can be reduced. It cannot be removed as all feed materials have some levels of sugars – as starch, fructans, sucrose etc. – but if we can keep intake low then we reduce the potential for some forms of laminitis.

The equine hindgut is a large fermentation vat. The microbes inhabiting it are specialists in breaking down fibre and release short chain fatty acids (VFA) which we term slow release energy. It isn’t, but it is a useful term to distinguish it from fast release (sugar).

Inflammation in the hooves The VFA are absorbed across the hindgut and enter the biochemical pathway that generates energy. One can be reformed to glucose, bypassing the release of insulin that leads to fat deposition and interactions associated with insulin resistance, one maintains the absorptive function of the gut cells and one is directly reduced for energy. In the absence of sugar in the hindgut (when too much is fed and cannot be absorbed) the local environment is stable and lactic acid producing bacteria from the small intestine cannot thrive. So no acidification of the hindgut occurs and negative products such as amines, lactic acid (inflammatory agents) and nitrite (blood flow constrictors) do not occur. In the presence of lactic acid, the gut wall cells, maintained by the VFA butyric acid, open up absorbing large molecules and the endotoxins get into the bloodstream, pool in the hooves (the nitrites reduce flow by constricting the blood vessels) and cause the inflammation that leads to laminitis.

Benefits of Beet Pulp Fibre, though, is not one nutrient. It consists of different carbohydrates that can be both structural and soluble. Each provides a substrate that different microbes can utilise and so the nature of the fibre can influence the microbial population of the horse’s gut. So a product such as beet pulp will generate a different profile of VFA to grass. One of

the main differences is that the former does not readily produce lactic acid and so can be substituted for grass for the laminitic animal. Likewise high fibre products such as SpeediBeet and Fibre-Beet as fibre providers and Baileys Keep Calm or Light Chaff provide a beneficial fibre profile and reduced sugar levels; these can of course benefit both the laminitic and the non-laminitic horse. Although fibre as an energy supply is always the best option for horses of all types, there will be times when extra energy is needed. Even the laminitic can process small amounts of starch/sugar (usually about half that of a non-laminitic) and so small amounts of hard feed can be used. However, there is a group of feedstuffs, known as super-fibre that can ameliorate the use of hard feeds. With effective degradability in the region of 75 -85% (grass has a value of 50%) beet pulp, alfalfa and soya hulls can provide similar energy to cereals through increased amounts of “slow release” energy. Beet pulp also has been shown to have a prebiotic effect to improve the VFA release of other fibres fed alongside and so can further improve energy intake. With such high fibre products in the market place, sugar does not need to feature as a bar to working a laminitic horse. Spring Feeding Most horses will be heading into spring looking the best they ever have at this time of year, as a result of the mild winter. With this in mind we are featuring a mixture of feed and supplements for the good doer, as well as for those who are in harder work and will probably be starting to require more calories now the competition season has started.

Fibre-Beet Fibre-Beet is a super fibre conditioning feed. it is a formulated blend providing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product, with additional high quality Alfalfa to aid optimum condition and also to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. Alfalfa can help with topline, as well as maintaining weight and a healthy, shiny coat. Fibre-Beet also provides a good range of minerals, trace elements and amino acids and it is high in fibre with a low sugar content. it is ideal for horses prone to digestive upsets and is very palatable, making it perfect for fussy eaters. it has added biotin for hoof quality and is suitable for laminitics. Fibre-Beet can also be used as a forage replacer (up to 60% of the daily forage allowance). it can be soaked and ready to feed in only 45 minutes in cold water, or 15 minutes in warm water. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Smart Condition Muesli Smart Horse Nutrition allows you to take control of your horse’s diet, providing you with the three essential building blocks of a balanced diet – micro nutrients, macro nutrients and fibre, allowing you to tailor a diet to the needs of your individual horse. Smart Condition muesli supplies 14mJ of cool conditioning energy which is low in sugars and starch, providing the energy required for competition, showing and weight gain. designed to be fed alongside Smart Balance which supplies the micro nutrients, Smart Condition muesli can be fed according to work done or weight gain needed, without compromising a balanced diet. www.smarthorsenutrition.com

TopSpec Antilam is a pelleted multi-supplement designed to provide 5-way nutritional support for horses prone to, being treated for, or recovering from laminitis. Antilam is used and recommended by nutritionists, vets and farriers. most overweight ponies, and some overweight horses, are susceptible to laminitis. Antilam is a brilliant formulation combining several supplements with a high-fibre, very low-calorie carrier to make it palatable. The formula is very low in sugar and starch and cereal-grain-free, making it ‘Non-Heating.’ long-term trials at middle park laminitis research Unit have shown that horses and ponies on restricted/poor grazing do not gain any weight when fed Antilam. it can also be used very successfully as part of a calorie-controlled diet when weight loss is required. This unique multi-supplement is so palatable that it can be fed out of the hand to horses and ponies at pasture to provide vital nutritional support. Antilam should be fed on its own with forage. The forage can be in the form of late-cut, low-sugar, hay and/or unmolassed chops e.g. TopChop lite, or controlled grazing, or a combination of these, depending on the individual circumstances. www.topspec.com

TopSpec Lite Feed Balancer TopSpec lite is the ultimate low calorie feed balancer designed for horses and ponies that need their weight controlled. These are usually good-doers that may be overweight and it is very important that this group of horses and ponies receive their full requirement of vitamins and minerals. TopSpec lite provides a generous amount of these micronutrients in a small amount of exceptionally low-calorie feed. The feed balancer will help maintain excellent health and performance whilst improving hoof quality and promoting supple skin and a shiny coat. long-term trials have shown that horses and ponies on restricted or poor grazing do not gain any additional weight when fed TopSpec lite. The unique ‘NoGrain’ formula is low in sugar and starch and is ‘non-heating’. lite can be conveniently fed straight from the hand. To compensate for the limited amount of nutrients well-furnished horses often consume, TopSpec lite has the added benefits of several supplements. These include an effective hoof improvement supplement and a broad spectrum supplement including powerful anti-oxidants to neutralise free-radicals and help maintain a healthy immune system. pure protected yeast has also been added to help maintain a healthy hindgut environment. www.topspec.com

Baileys High Fibre, High Oil Conditioning Mix Baileys’ Slow release Condition & Competition mix is a high fibre, high oil mix designed to deliver highly digestible slow release calories to those looking for a reduced starch conditioning option. Containing Alfalfa Blend and Outshine high oil supplement, so there should be no need to add extra, this new mix is ideal for stressy types and includes yea-Sacc and digest plus to promote digestive efficiency. With performance levels of vitamins, Bioplex minerals and antioxidants, including Sel-plex selenium and vitamin e, Slow release Condition & Competition mix will suit resting or hard-working horses alike. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

Preparing for the season ahead Manufacturers of horse feeds and supplements are passionate about their research and the development of new products to help horses live longer and have more comfortable lives, as well as performing to the best of their abilities. Here we share a mixture of new and old, which you might find of benefit during the season ahead.

Equine America Hemo-Flex To maintain consistent peak performance, horses in competition require strong support for the joints, muscles and circulatory system. To meet these needs in one economic supplement, Hemo-Flex Solution has been developed using a combination of Cortaflex, Tye-Gard and Hemogen, providing assistance to joint flexibility and soundness, whilst helping to reduce muscle stiffness and cramps, whilst supporting the circulation throughout the horse’s body. www.equine-america.co.uk

Equine America Everyday Vitamin & Mineral Supplement Everyday Vitamin & Mineral Supplement is an ideal addition to any feeding regime providing essential vitamins and minerals and trace elements in a pre-biotic base to support good health and condition. This product offers great value while maintaining top product performance, and can be used as an economic vitamin and mineral supplement for horses and ponies in low level work. www.equine-america.co.uk

Equine America Xtra Boost Horses benefit from an extra shot of iron and B vitamins just before competition. Xtra Boost is a handy three dose syringe to be used prior to competition to increase energy and maximise performance. www.equine-america.co.uk

NAF Recover An antioxidant formula for relaxed muscles, recover is ideal after strenuous exercise and competition to support the horse’s natural recovery process. Fed as a five day course, it helps ensure mobility and athletic potential is maintained. www.naf-equine.eu

with regards to the hindgut. The delicate microbial ecosystem provides a substantial energy source for the horse. However, this ecosystem can be easily upset. The result being compromised growth and ultimately death of the beneficial fibre-digesting microbes, leading to the growth of undesirable micro-organisms and gut damage. When horses are asked to perform, there is increased stress on the gut, meaning appropriate diets and feeding management are even more crucial. Lifeforce Elite from Alltech is specially designed for competition horses and those faced with stressful situations. It supports a healthy immune system, increases the availability of antioxidants and creates a healthy digestive environment. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

NAF Five Star Superflex Senior Five Star Superflex Senior is a unique formulation providing NAF’s highest specification of the key joint support nutrients for horses, working in synergy with rich natural sources of Omega 3 fatty acids and naturally sourced antioxidants to support healthy, flexible joints in older horses and ponies still leading active lives. www.naf-equine.eu

NAF Go Sound For total relief when your horse really needs it, Go Sound is the natural way to provide comfort to older horses or those needing additional support. Formulated using natural ingredients known for their comforting qualities, Go Sound is safe to compete on under FEI rules and can be fed to all horses and ponies, including pregnant mares. www.naf-equine.eu

Nettex Electrolytes The Nettex Electrolyte Range has been formulated to replace vital salts that are lost through any form of sweating brought on from strenuous exercise, travelling or stressrelated conditions. Ideal for use all year round, especially during the hotter months and competition season. The Nettex Electrolyte Range will help top up energy levels and are mint flavoured, so are highly palatable. Ensuring horses maintain electrolyte levels during exercise will help reduce trigger factors for muscle related problems. Equine sweat contains a higher concentration of salts than in the actual body fluid, this means that a sweating horse loses proportionately more electrolytes than water. In hot environmental conditions, 10 to 15 litres of fluid can be lost per hour of exercise. www.nettexequine.com

Lifeforce Elite from Alltech A healthy gut equals a healthy horse. When there are disturbances in the gut, problems such as reduced performance, weight and condition loss, increased susceptibility to disease and infection, inflammatory disorders, colic and laminitis are all possibilities. The functioning of the gut has a huge impact on the overall health and well-being of the horse and this is particularly important 74 Localrider April/may 2016

Equine America Ventilator A natural supplement specially formulated using a unique combination of herbs and natural ingredients to support a clear bronchial system and aid all aspects of respiratory health including the airways and lungs. www.equine-america.co.uk

Outstanding Results

Equine America Apple Lytes As horses work and sweat they lose vital electrolytes and mineral salts. At low levels these can be replaced with Sodium Chloride (salt), but if the horse is in medium to hard work and sweating on a daily basis, an electrolyte supplement must be provided. Without electrolytes, the horse will feel lethargic, and a continuation of this loss is highly detrimental to the horse’s health. As the main electrolyte is a salt (sodium chloride) it is important to use a salt based product (not a solution) as it is not possible to suspend enough of the mineral salts needed within a solution. Apple lytes are a salt-based product which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple lytes are also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse - always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise. www.equine-america.co.uk

Equine America Super So-Kalm Horses can experience nervousness and tension before exercise or competition causing them to misbehave or ‘wash out’. Super So-Kalm contains a premium grade magnesium with l-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid associated with the production of serotonin, to calm and focus the horse. Fed daily, this can aid concentration and willingness to work, without removing the edge required for competition. young horses also have a tendency to be highly strung and distracted, leading to training problems in the future. Feed young horses or ponies in their first season Super So-Kalm plus to help them to relax and ensure that their new experiences are good experiences. www.equine-america.co.uk

NAF Five Star Respirator Boost Five Star respirator Boost provides valuable nutritional support to the respiratory mucosal immune system and the delicate capillary blood vessels that surround the lungs. research shows that by supplementing the diet with naturally sourced anti-oxidants, the horse’s lungs can be given valuable support. Clear the respiratory system fast with Five Star respirator Boost and help your horse or pony cope with the pressures of the modern equine lifestyle with this Five Star Formula. www.naf-equine.eu
