Welcome 30 I

always say the busy season starts at Badminton and ends with the Horse of the Year Show, but this year has been even busier than ever. For that I am grateful as it has meant that I have been able to share more of your wonderful stories and results. The Regional Roundup section is bursting at the seams with a cross section of equestrian news and the Readers’ Gallery has a fabulous selection of fun and inspiring images. Two-year-old Sofia Fuller is clearly a determined young rider and I am sure we will be seeing more of her in Localrider in the coming years. Another young lady with big plans for the future is Sienna Burnett Shrubb, I met her last month at the Horse of the Year Show, where she was watching her cousin Ella Dalton in the Working Hunter classes. Both of these young riders can be found on page 30. We have managed to secure almost £6,000 worth of prizes for the annual Christmas Giveaways, even more than last year! I know lots of you enter and it is always exciting to hear who has won what during the year, when I meet you at shows and events. There are 194 individual prizes and all you have to do to enter is tick the boxes (the more you tick the better chance you have of winning) of the prizes you would like to win and post the entry form to Localrider HQ. And because this is a double issue you have until the end of January to post your entries in. I can’t sign off without mentioning Christmas and our wonderful Gift Guide on page 31. We have only selected our favourite items and with presents starting from just £1.50 we hope you will find the pages helpful if you still have your Christmas shopping to do. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a fantastically successful 2016, when hopefully all of your horsey dreams and goals will come true.

NEWS Stock up for winter at Aivly

Nicolina MacKenzie receives Outstanding Achievement Award It was role-reversal for Nicolina MacKenzie on Saturday 24th October when she was presented with the Spillers Showing World Outstanding Achievement Award at the Showing Council Showing World Awards Dinner. Nicolina (Nicky) is frequently pictured attending equestrian events presenting prizes on behalf of SEIB, but it was her turn in the spotlight as she collected the accolade in recognition of her considerable contribution to showing. Nicky has worked as Marketing Manager for SEIB Insurance Brokers for over 21 years and during this time she has been responsible for instigating and supporting numerous equestrian activities. The first SEIB Search for a Star competition was held 19 years ago, and Nicky has been the driving force behind the series ever since.

Aivly in Ringwood, Hampshire has everything you need to help you keep your yard running smoothly this winter. Top products recommended for winter include: Agrifence, grass ring mats, stable mats, as well as haynets and other stable essentials. When it comes to bedding, Bliss Basic is always a popular choice. This premium quality bedding is made from chopped rape straw, which has been dust extracted, ideal for those who are prone to or suffer from respiratory issues. Bliss Basic is also treated with Trus-STEED Stable Guard disinfectant so will help to keep your stable fresher for longer. For friendly and helpful advice on bedding or to take advantage of their free delivery service (T&Cs apply) visit www.aivly.co.uk

Magic Mud Formula

Over the years, approximately 9,000 horse and rider combinations have passed through SEIB Search for a Star, trying for that elusive ticket to Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). The series is strictly for amateur riders and their horses providing a unique opportunity to compete at HOYS for those that might not otherwise have the chance to compete at this level. Nicky is robust in upholding the rules and spirit of the competition and the series remains true to its origins, nurturing grass roots competitors and encouraging them to go on to further success in the show ring.

Magic Mud Formula for itchy, flakey, scabby, cracked skin. Wet and muddy conditions can cause the hooves and legs of your horse or pony to be vulnerable to bacteria and fungus. Magic Mud is a safe and soothing anti-fungal and anti-bacterial cream than can be applied regularly to the skin for healthy hooves and legs.

Nicky was also responsible for instigating the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship 10 years ago and it is still very close to her heart, providing a platform to show how a correctly re-schooled racehorse can become a top class show horse. Nicky has four horses and rides for pleasure. Her kind heart has led her to take on horses that are less than sound, but in her care they thrive and live out their old age. She is also passionate about rehoming rescue dogs including those from Romania and frequently extolls their virtues encouraging others to take on these deserving dogs. The entertaining exploits of her two dogs, Perry and Jane, are often the topic of Nicky’s facebook posts. “I am in shock, but I really want to thank the team, all those who help run Search for a Star and the Racehorse to Riding Horse series, particularly Robert Oliver and the late Anne Pritchard who were there at the outset, the Ramseys and the Bartrams who have given me so much support over the years and more recently David Ingle and Katie Jerram. We have had the greatest names in showing involved and it is the team that make it all happen. They are wonderful and willingly give up their time to support and help the true amateur”, said Nicky after the award ceremony.

Handcrafted Horseboxes Based near Sevenoaks in Kent, Equi-Star horseboxes are built and designed by horse owners for horse owners. Constantly introducing new ideas the horseboxes which are stalled for two are handmade in strong, lightweight composite body panels, keeping things as light as possible, without compromising on strength. The innovative designs of the Apollo and Athena make transporting horses simple, yet stylish and because the horseboxes are made on site it is possible to influence the overall finish, just like when one buys a new build house. This is particularly so in the living area, as one can choose the colours used both internally and externally. And best of all these horseboxes can be driven on a UK car licence. www.kenthorseboxes.co.uk

Says Mary: “I believe that the key to being a successful rider is having a good everyday routine in place. It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional event rider or competing as a hobby, solid foundations will set you up to achieve the best from yourself and your horse. You must be prepared to keep learning and improving – I still am!” Mary King: My Way - how I train for success is available from www.acanthuspress.co.uk price £25 plus £4.95. Worming, keeping it simple Gillian Booth SQP of Westgate Labs says: “Wormers, plans, advice, it can all get very confusing indeed. Here at Westgate Labs we have been helping owners to sort out their worming problems since 1999. Our friendly experienced team deal with every worming situation you can possibly think of on a daily basis. Advice is tailored to your horse, his age, condition and how he is kept, all with a solid base of test results. Best of all this advice and support is freely available to our customers who only have to ask. The best worm control is based on tests, only adding essential worming doses. Our plans take into account cover for encysted redworm in winter and help is available to deal with pinworm problems, and tapeworm testing too with the excellent and well validated Equisal saliva test. It is really important to stop random and blanket dosing before the worms become resistant to every wormer available. Base your worm control on our simple yearly plan. Some horses, especially the young and the old will need more frequent tests and more worming doses which is why it’s important to tailor the programme to your needs so please do get in touch.” www.westgatelabs.co.uk The team at Westgate Labs

Verdo Horse Bedding Tried & Tested: SolarHub Lighting Solution The SolarHub range is a very efficient and easy-to-fit lighting system for stables, field shelters, workshops, washrooms, agricultural buildings and stores. It can be fixed to a wall, roof or just propped up on the ground and connects directly to the back of the hub. The hub has a long-life lithium battery pack that is constantly charged by the solar panel, so there is always power available when it’s needed. The LED light strip is connected to the hub by a 5m cable – all done in minutes. In addition, the hub has two USB power outputs for charging smartphones and tablets, for example, and an auto socket for powering 12v devices such as fans, pumps, clippers, 12v TVs and laptops. The SolarHub 16 (retailing at £99.99) provides 16 sq m of mains-quality lighting, which can be doubled with the addition of an expansion pack (£39.99), while the SolarHub 64 (£199.99) covers a space of 64 sq m (or four small rooms), with a 32 sq m expansion pack available (£59.99).

Verdo Horse Bedding, the innovative wood pellet brand is manufactured 364 days a year, so there is always a constant supply available. Verdo Horse Bedding is highly absorbent and virtually dust free, so it’s the ideal choice not just for winter, but all year around. Verdo absorbs three times its weight in liquid, so it helps soak up any urine quickly and hygienically yet in its pellet form weighs very little. Verdo suggest that Investing in rubber matting not only saves on the amount of bedding used, but also creates a comfortable cushioned layer for your horse. However choose your bedding wisely, so that the wet doesn’t sit on the rubber matting and create foot health issues and make sure you lay the rubber matting snuggly together, so you don’t end up catching your fork and pulling up the matting every day. www.verdohorsebedding.co.uk

Both are simple to fit and offer a complete lighting and power kit in one box – a high-efficiency solar panel with wall bracket, an advanced lithium battery hub and a super-bright LED strip, plus cables. The solar panel, which collects enough energy during daylight to provide up to six hours of light every day of the year at the flick of a switch, has a fantastic 20-year warranty while the battery is covered for two years. There is also a horsebox fitting kit (£29.99) enabling light and power when travelling for competition.

LR Comment: The SolarHub is quick and easy to install, although you may need some assistance, as it is best to fix fairly high up. For the last twenty years I have done evening stable duties aided by a multitude of torches. My world has changed, I now have light in my stables as well as the feed room. Ideal for the shed etc too.

‘Lungeing and LongReining’ by Jennie LoristonClarke MBE FBHS is a stepby-step guide to training, exercising and suppling horses from the ground. Advice is given on training foals and young horses through to advanced long reining, which includes travers, canter pirouettes, piaffe, passage and flying changes. Inspiring exercises to keep you going through winter.

Former Chairman of World Horse Welfare, Christopher Hall’s book ‘Horse Welfare, Use Not Abuse’ is a wonderful collection of stories and pictures of the charity’s work around the globe. HRH Princess Anne writes at the beginning of the book: “The sadness is that a book like ‘Horse Welfare, Use Not Abuse’ should still need to be written after so many years of campaigning by charities such as World Horse Welfare.” With all the profits from the book going to World Horse Welfare, why not purchase a copy for your horsey friends and family.

When Lucy Johnson struggled to find good equestrian fiction for her son, she decided to write a story herself. ‘Pony Racer’ is the tale of a young boy, Tom, who feels alone in the world and his relationship with a horse called Leo. Somehow the young pony knows exactly how to get through to this lonely and unhappy boy. Tom learns to ride and the pair become inseperable, but Tom faces many challenges before he and Leo finally discover their true home on a racecourse.

‘Cartoons from the Horse’s Mouth’ by Spencer Hill and Vicky Oakey is a hilarious collection of cartoons, which any horse lover will enjoy. There are over 100 cartoons featuring horses and ponies with their views on everything from rugs to hay bags, grooming to jumping and lots more. Highly recommended by Localrider HQ.

Don’t forget your fourlegged friend at Christmas time…

Primrose with Lucy

Words by Primrose Hill, www.thesaddleryshop.co.uk’s equine ambassador

W

e horse know that our humans get very excited about the festive period and about night-time visits from Santa Claus; even though the thought of a dimly-lit sleigh appearing over the horizon at midnight would be enough to send most of us scurrying for the nearest hedge to hide in. However all we really want for Christmas is to be warm, happy and healthy, and to feel the love and care from our humans. Here’s the definitive horsey festive wish list, as compiled by me, Primrose Hill, the Barefoot Beauty Queen: The festive period brings a much looked-forward-to time of frivolity and parties for my human counterparts, not to mention plenty of food and presents. However this exciting time often means they have less time to spend at the yard with us, their fourlegged friends. My main Christmas wish is that my human ensures, even though the month of December can be hectic, that they still make plenty of time for me. Try not to reduce our exercise levels Try not to too much, as not only will this mean we reduce our have to ‘watch our waistlines’ but also exercise levels we can become bored and frustrated too much in and sometimes, dare I admit it…badly winter. Get behaved. Even more importantly, a out and about sudden decrease in exercise can mean as much as you can. we are more at risk of equine illness and conditions such as colic and laminitis. If you are short on time, why not swap your lengthy schooling sessions for a quick lunge or loose jump in the school, that is if your four-legged friend is the ‘jumping variety’. (Personally I like to keep all four hooves on terra firma). In terms of turn-out, most equines would rather be allowed out in the field to play and stretch our legs. We understand that humans much prefer snuggling under a duvet in winter time, but as grazing animals we have evolved to tolerate the wet, windy and muddy weather much better. If turn out options are reduced in the depths of the winter, remember to supply us with ample forage in our stables. Our natural habits would involve grazing on low quality pasture for up to sixteen hours per day. Honestly, we are not just being greedy. Every equine requires an absolute minimum of 1-2% of their own bodyweight in forage per day to maintain a healthy digestive tract. If you are still managing to maintain plenty of time in the field for your horses and ponies, just be sure to keep a close eye on their skin, as mud fever is a common condition which can affect us, causing scabs and sores to develop on the skin on our legs. Whilst most of us would rather be charging around in the countryside getting muddy, we still need your help to keep clean, I suppose…. sometimes. (My human loves ‘Barrier Animal Health Heel to Hoof Soothing Cream’ - it loosens scabs, waterproofs and protects our limbs, and doesn’t seal the skin. Heel to Hoof is a

We like to stretch our legs, even in what our humans would consider ‘bad weather’! wonderful soothing product to help protect and soothe inflamed areas, and allows gross, itchy scabs to fall away. No human picking required; we all know you love to do that.) Whilst we are on the subject of keeping us clean, I would like to let you know that pampering is highly welcome, so if the darker nights are getting in the way of riding routines, why not spend some time grooming your equine friend? Grooming stimulates our blood circulation, helping to keep us healthy, and also means you can keep an eye out for any lumps, bumps or scrapes we may have incurred. If your horse is clipped, a warm, cosy and waterproof rug is essential, but don’t let us get to hot as when horse’s sweat, as well as losing water, we also loose vital minerals! The past few Decembers have been mild, so I know it is time consuming, but regular re-evaluation of rug choices will keep us happy and comfortable. Merry Christmas!

The sweetest thing

ave you heard of Bombers Bits? These blue-coloured sweet iron bits are widely used by the upper echelon of equestrianism in Europe, notably within show jumping, and are extremely popular and widely regarded. With these bits, loriner Bomber Nel developed a unique, proven technology for bitting Words by Regular dental checks ensure horses that offers a wide the horse is comfortable range of bitting solutions. Stephen Biddlecombe Bombers’ unique style of handcrafted production and hands-on development means there’s a range that suits horses of all mouth confirmations, and within all How do bits work? disciplines. Each Bombers bit is made from blue sweet iron, because Bits are just part of the communication process between rider and it oxidises easily, encourages salivation, helps bit acceptance and is horse, and exert pressure on some or all of the following parts of warm and sweet. (The blue colour fades over time.) a horse’s mouth, internally: Sweet iron metal is actually an extruded wrought iron. It is a • The bars (the gummy sections between the incisor and molar good modern choice for a horse bit, as it has a comfortable feeling teeth) and a slightly sweet taste within the mouth. Trainer Monty Roberts • Roof of the mouth is a fan of sweet iron bits. “I always use sweet iron snaffles on my young horses, they seem to enjoy the taste and the design • Tongue – especially the sensitive edges encourages them to take the bit and carry it correctly,” he’s been • Lips and corners of the mouth quoted as saying. Externally, bits put pressure on the following parts of the horse’s Show jumper William Funnell has said that in his experience, mouth: horses ‘mouth up’ better and become more responsive in sweet iron bits, saying: “The horses do seem to enjoy them more. I haven’t • Poll areas beneath the headpiece of the bridle found a horse who doesn’t go well in a sweet iron bit.” • The curb groove which is the ‘hollow’ just above the chin

A rounded mouthpiece shape

Bombers bits have a special, rounded mouthpiece shape. Loriner Bomber Nel’s philosophy is that pressure leads to resistance, and resistance leads to lack of control. So, to get control, you must remove resistance and pressure; if you cannot remove the pressure, you have to distribute the pressure over a bigger surface area. Bombers bits therefore distribute the pressure exceptionally well in the mouth of the horse by having a specially rounded shape of mouthpiece.

A ‘dressage legal’ bit, the Bombers Elliptical Loose Ring has a 45 mm lozenge and is ideal for a horse that pushes against the bit with the tongue.

Always make sure you maintain regular equine dental checks. Dental checks by an equine dental technician or vet are recommended at least once a year, to ensure the horse is comfortable, and to avoid longer-term mouthing and bitting problems.

The Bombers McHardy is a hybrid of a jointed Happy Tongue bit and a ‘Buster Roller’. It provides ‘extra’ control, plus comfort for the horse’s tongue.

Five years and counting

Bombers Equestrian Equipment Bits were brought to the UK in 2011 by distributor Equine Management. The company, the original distributor, still supplies UK tack shops with Bombers Bits as well as via online sales at www.bombersbits.co.uk and www.worldwidetack. co.uk. Equine Management also offers a bespoke bit service. The revolutionary ‘design your own bit’ service means that shoppers can choose whatever mouth piece, cheek piece and size they require and customise each Bombers bit with personal instruction. On receiving an order, distributor Stephen Biddlecbombe, the author of this article, will respond with a quote and estimated turnaround time. Call 01825 841303 to discuss your bespoke requirements.

Testimonial “I just wanted to write and say a big thank you to Stephen Biddlecombe. I was having trouble with my daughter’s 13hh putting his tongue over the bit; it didn’t appear to be an evasion, more a discomfort. After chatting to Stephen, he recommended the Bombers Weymouth Set, and he managed to find one for me in a small size. The bit seems to have relieved the pressure on our pony’s tongue, and he has stopped putting his tongue over. The pony went onto contest HOYS Search for a Star, and goes beautifully in this bit. Thank you so much for your advice and superfast dispatch of your amazing bits.” From Serena. december 2015 / january 2016 Localrider 29

tried&tested Toggi Keddington

Musto Suffolk BR1 Coat

For active equestrians, the waterproof and breathable Keddington jacket is expertly designed by riders for riders. Packed full of features, Keddington’s articulated sleeves, action back, shaped hem and back vents offer superb comfort and movement whilst in and out of the saddle. Waterproof and breathable with a ripstop fabric and durable water repellent finish for added durability, this hard working jacket features an engineered hood which packs away neatly in to the collar to ensure you stay dry and comfortable when you need it most. With padding throughout and fleece lined pockets, Keddington provides the added warmth essential to get you through the long, British winters.

Cut extra long for additional warmth and comfort outdoors, the Suffolk BR1 Coat is waterproof, windproof and breathable. It has been treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating to ensure water beads on the fabric’s surface and doesn’t penetrate into the weave. A high collar, removable, fully adjustable storm hood and self fabric cape provide additional weather protection and comfort for the wearer, while large bellow pockets and a rear riding vent ensure practicality in the saddle.

Colour: Black Sizes: 8-20 RRP: £140.00 www.toggi.com LR Comment: You can tell this jacket has been designed by riders as it combines all the best bits of my favourite jackets. There is a two-way zip with a fixable flap over the top and the jacket can be zipped right up to your nose. The cuffs have Velcro straps to allow you to tighten them up. There are fleece lined zipped pockets, which are perfect for warming your hands. The jacket has been designed to allow for plenty of movement, so it is great for riding, including fast work.

Colour: Evening Forest Sizes: 8 – 18 RRP: £295.00 www.musto.com LR Comment: This is the ultimate wet weather coat. Everything has been taken into consideration in the detail of the design, in order to keep the wearer warm and dry from head to toe. A huge added benefit compared to other long coats is the small layer of padding in the body of the coat, which really helps to keep the warmth in. Perfect for spectating, walking the dog and generally being outside on wet and windy days, but for anyone who stands outside teaching in all weathers it has to be one of the most technical coats available.

RRP: £12.99 www.aldi.co.uk LR Comment: These fitted me perfectly around the waist and in leg length. If you do a lot of schooling or jumping they might not be for you, but if you enjoy hacking and wear your breeches around the yard when doing jobs they are perfect. A bit thinner than some, so will be good for spring too.

Collecting Ring Nerves Each issue the South East Parelli Team answer your questions on Natural Horsemanship, this month they focus on helping a reader whose horse is struggling to relax in the collecting ring.

Building your horse’s confidence will help him to relax in the collecting ring.

The South East Parelli Team is a group of Parelli Professionals based throughout the region who teach the Parelli Programme to individuals in the area, either with one to one tuition or group lessons. For more information email terri_martinus@1withyourhorse.com

Question:

In the collecting ring my horse gets easily threatened by other horses amongst other things. Can you provide advice on how to deal with this kind of issue?

Answer:

Horses need to develop confidence in five areas: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Self confidence. Confidence in their leader (you) Confidence as a learner Confidence in new environments Confidence with other horses.

So when a horse has trouble with other horses around him or coming towards him, this exposes a lack of confidence in three areas - self confidence, leadership and other horses. (New environments may also be a area which will intensify the others!).

How to improve your horse’s confidence in the collecting ring: First of all, it starts at home. You have to learn how to develop your horse’s self confidence which is best done on the ground. In the Parelli approach we build the relationship and develop communication and confidence on the ground first, playing

the Seven Games and then progressing level by level. At first it is very basic, but quickly you can advance to more challenging requests such as sending the horse out on longer lines towards targets or in specific patterns. Pretty soon the horse feels different about you as his leader and his self confidence grows. Once these have improved, he will already be better, but you still need to help him in the area concerning other horses. When your horse is afraid of other horses around him this is usually because he’s afraid of being dominated and attacked by another horse. Confident, dominant horses don’t usually feel this way, it’s the unconfident, fearful and submissive horse that does. Additionally, if you are riding your horse on the bit and his head is down or low, his vision is limited and that can increase his fears.

Some ideas to develop here... 1. Practice at home. Get some friends to ride with you and simulate the situation, but have them be stationary and ride your horse in and around them. Once your horse relaxes into that, ask them to walk around the arena to the right or left and stay like that. Then do the same, starting with following and passing, and then going around, and finally towards. If your horse has trouble, don’t force him. Simply turn the other way and come up behind again, or let him go wide. Pretty soon it won’t be a problem, but if you force him, it will.

Gradually you’ll be able to do this at trot and canter while they are walking, and then they can increase their speed too. The most important thing is to not do it all at once, pass each test one at a time and don’t proceed until then. This may be accomplished in one session, but it might take several. You can have the objective, but allow the horse to be in charge of the time line. 2. When at the event, walk your horse in the collecting ring on a loose rein. Don’t have his head down or tucked, especially at first, because it does limit his range of vision to an extent and this can increase fear. And if you can’t walk him on a loose rein, take him outside of the arena and do it there. There is no sense in forcing a horse through his fear because it doesn’t really work. You might get him to move around, but his fear will intensify and it will be worse the next time or some time after that, like an unexploded bomb! Another strategy is to follow another horse for a while, preferably one that is going slowly! Slow and right beats fast and wrong, but getting it right beats everything. Your horse depends on you as his leader to keep him safe and to build his confidence, and that needs to happen way in advance of getting him to the event. TRIED&TESTED

Winter Rugs

This month we have been testing winter rugs, stable and turnout, as well as liners and travel rugs. We think we have selected the perfect mix of rugs with both fixed and detachable hoods to help you survive this winter.

Mark Todd Deluxe Combo Stable Rug This heavyweight rug is generously cut with extra fabric inset at the withers for top to tail warmth, even when the horse’s head is lowered. Featuring a tough, 1200 denier outer fabric, warm 420g insulation and a nylon anti-rub lining that leaves the coat shiny, the rug offers excellent protection from the cold. Colour: Navy Sizes: 5’6” to 7’0” RRP: £124.99 www.wefi.co.uk LR Comment: This is an extremely warm heavyweight stable rug. It fits well and I liked the combination neck, which isn’t so common in stable rugs. The rug fits well and is generous in its design.

John Whitaker 350g Combo Rug

JHL Heavyweight Turnout Rug

The John Whitaker Full Neck Combo rug has a 350g fibre fill and Teflon coated outer to help keep your horse warm in cold winter conditions. The Combo Rug is made with a fully detachable hood. The pleated Union Jack gussets, fully adjustable double surcingle straps and d-ring clasps across the chest help to make this rug a comfortable fit for your horse.

This warm turnout represents excellent value, with a robust 1200 denier waterproof and breathable ripstop outer, nylon anti-rub lining and 350g insulation layer. Features include shoulder pleats for freedom of movement, adjustable quick release front fastenings, low cross surcingles, adjustable leg straps, reflective piping and a pleated tail flap to keep out the winter chills. A matching neck cover is also available. Colour: Navy/Burgundy Sizes: 5’6” to 7’0” RRP: £99.99 (neck cover £40.99) www.wefi.co.uk LR Comment: The detachable hood gives this rug added flexibility as to how it is used. On cold wet days the hood can be attached, but on warmer days, it is simple to unclip. This style of rug is definitely something to consider if your horse tends to rub their mane under a fixed hood, particularly if they are wearing a hood at night too.

Colour: Navy RRP: £140.00 www.johnwhitaker.com LR Comment: This is a very smart looking heavyweight turnout. It is generously made for the larger horse and I like the way that the hood zips on to the rug. It has a small flap on the inside of the rug and a larger one on the outside to cover the zip. The hood also has a wide Velcro flap to go over the straps that keep it around the horse’s neck.

LeMieux Four Seasons Rug The LeMieux Four Seasons Rug is one of the most useful rugs to have around the stables or at shows with its thermal wicking properties. It can function as a top layer, whilst the fleece lining allows airflow to keep your horse warm and dry. Deep rolled back collar for maximum comfort and security of the rug. Fully adjustable twin front straps allow for freedom and movement in the chest and shoulders. Colours: Benetton Blue, Burgundy, Black, Brown, Navy, Grey Sizes: Medium, Large, Extra Large RRP: £74.95 www.horsehealth.co.uk LR Comment: A very smart and stylish rug that can be worn at shows or every day. The rolled back collar and twin adjustable straps ensure the perfect fit. The thermal and wicking qualities, plus the fact that this rug is machine washable make this the perfect all round rug.

Horseware Amigo Vari-Layer Stable Rug Made from durable 600 denier polyester, with 450g layered fibrefill inside and a polyester lining. This classic cut rug features the Horseware Vari-Layer technology giving you more warmth with less weight, plus the rug has a shine enhancing polyester lining. Colours: Navy, Blue with Strong Blue, Black Sizes: 5’6” to 7’0” RRP: £108.00 www.horseware.com LR Comment: This is a beautifully made stable rug, which offers flexibility of use, as the hood is easy to remove if preferred. Although the rug is 450g and extremely warm, it is possible to add extra liners if your horse feels the cold.

WeatherBeeta Channel Quilt 420D Combo Neck Heavy Made from a strong 420 Denier outer shell, with 360g of fill for maximum warmth on the coldest winter nights. There is also a 210T Nylon lining to help keep your horse’s coat clean and shiny. The added side gusset allows for movement. Colours: Black Teal Plaid and Navy/Grey/ White Sizes: 5’0” to 7’0” in Black/Teal Plaid and 5’0” 7’3” in Navy/Grey/White RRP: £79.99 www.weatherbeeta.com LR Comment: We tested the rug in the new black teal plaid, which is certainly eye catching and looks very smart. The rug is well made and the outer material is strong and durable, perfect for using all winter.

The detachable hood is securely fitted and the lining of the hood is made from a light nylon, which tends to be better for manes. I liked the large tail flap and addition of fluorescent patches, which can be useful on dark nights.

The Bibs are designed to protect the shoulders, chest and withers, while the ManeGuards will help prevent the mane being rubbed out by full neck rugs, as well as protecting the shoulders, chest and withers. ost riders are aware of air jackets and how they work, but did you know you can swap your air bag into different garments, depending on what you want to do? If you thought air jackets were just for event riders or those who want peace of mind out hacking and during lessons, that’s no longer the case. Helite’s flattering Air Shell range, distributed by Treehouse Sporting Colours, has an air jacket for every occasion, whether you’re competing in eventing, dressage or showjumping, out on the hunting field or schooling at home. The best bit about the range is that the outer shells are interchangeable. This means you only need to buy one garment with an air bag, which you can swap into other items of clothing depending on what you are doing on the day. Here’s what’s available in the range… • The Air Shell Blouson. A popular choice with competition and leisure riders, the Blouson is permitted for British Showjumping competitions and the showjumping phase of British eventing. In colours black/blue, black/grey and blue/red, prices start at £395 (outer shells from £130).

Q. Spot the Air Jacket?

• The Air Shell Gilet. This lightweight Gilet is permitted by British Dressage and British Showjumping and can be worn in the dressage and showjumping phases of British Eventing. It’s available in blue, blue/red, black, black/blue and black/grey and prices start at £375 (outer shells from £110). • The Air Show. A new milestone in the equestrian airbag sector, the Air Show is the first showjumping jacket to accommodate a zip-in airbag. It comes in dark grey or dark grey with a beige colour and is priced from £495 (outer shells from £185).

Safety matters

There’s no getting away from the fact that riding is a dangerous sport, but with the right equipment we can greatly reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. Air jackets have undoubtedly saved many riders’ lives over the years and they work by inflating when horse and rider part company. Helite Air Jackets offer protection to the full length of the back and chest, as well as the sides and back of the neck. This helps to reduce the likelihood of impact and whiplash injuries. Due to the fact Helite Air Jackets have the quickest inflation speed on the market (of just 0.1 seconds) riders have peace of mind that they are better protected if they suffer a rotational fall, where they may part company with their horse closer to the ground. Vital seconds count!

Enhancing Sport Horse Performance

Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed CertEM MRCVS of The Arundel Equine Hospital

I

t is more common place for us as vets to be asked to look at horses that are lame or obviously not well. The limp, that is the lameness or the poor appetite alerts the owner or rider to the fact that there is something wrong with the horse. However, increasingly now I am asked to look at horses that are fundamentally sound and healthy to see if there is anything that is limiting the performance of the horse, that could be corrected or managed in a different way to enhance how well the horse performs. This may be from an orthopaedic or medical point of view. Often horses work and perform to an acceptable level with various injuries or medical problems; however if they were in perfect health and totally pain free they may be able to perform to a higher level. When a sportsperson is in pain they visit their doctor or physiotherapist and discuss exactly how they feel, unfortunately horses can only communicate by showing lameness or another symptom. A dip in performance can indicate a problem, but many horse’s performance does not reduce it just never quite reaches its potential. It has to be said that the biggest cause of poor performance is lack of ability, not every horse can be an Olympic contender, but there are some that could be if performance limiting issues were corrected. Performance enhancement is not all about injecting illegal drugs, rather it is about enabling a horse to reach its natural potential.

Routine examinations

Many riders ask for their horses to be routinely examined every three or four months, some ask for them to be examined prior to important competitions and some ask for the examination to be carried out due to the observed dip in performance. I initially ask what level the horse is working at and what its anticipated level is. I then ask if there have been any observed problems such as intermittent lameness, swelling of a joint, change in the technique over a fence, a change in the horses eating habits, etc; I basically get a detailed history looking for any clues as to potential problems. The horse is then examined in the stable, I look at the general health indicated by demeanour, body weight and coat condition. I look at symmetry and degree of muscular development and general relaxed stance of the horse. Sometimes a blood sample is collected prior to exercise and submitted for routine biochemistry and haematology. The eyes, heart and lungs are examined. I then palpate the horse all over feeling the back, neck and limbs for obvious swellings, heat and pain. I check the normal range of motion of the joints.

Full assessment

Out of the stable the horse is stood up squarely and its conformation is checked. I then like to see the horse walked and trotted in a straight line on a firm flat surface. The way the feet are placed and the character of the gait are noted, for example whether it is short and choppy in front or behind or whether it lands toe or heel first. Flexion tests are performed on all four limbs including the upper and lower limbs. An assessment of the ability to rein back and cross the hind limbs when turned short over the forelimbs is made, this can demonstrate problems such as hock pain or sacroiliac instability. Lunging on a soft surface at walk, trot and canter is then performed. During this stage of the examination I listen to the horses wind as well as look at the gait. I like to see lots of up and down transitions to see how well the horse is balanced. The heart is examined again at the end of the exercise test. A comparison of the gait is made at trot on the lunge on a hard surface also. Following this the horse is saddled and the rider demonstrates how the horse

works, this may involve complex dressage movements to look at symmetry of step or jumping fences to demonstrate the horse’s technique. One thing I do like to see is the horse walk in a straight line on a soft surface as this allows for an assessment of the horses postural muscle tone. Sometimes I will even ride a horse, if the owner permits, to see how it feels.

Old injuries may be discovered

Following this detailed clinical examination I make suggestions of further diagnostic modalities that could be made use of to further evaluate the horses well being. Usually a radiographic survey is carried out to look at foot balance and general joint health, particularly of the feet, hocks, stifles and fetlocks, but also the back and increasingly the neck. In some instances a bone scan is performed particularly if a back, sacroiliac or neck problem is suspected. Ultrasonography can be used to assess the tendons and ligaments of the distal limbs if an injury here is suspected. Endoscopy of the airway and the stomach can also be carried out. In some instances I will suggest an MRI scan, particularly if I suspect a complex forelimb problem associated with the distal limb. One of the main techniques at our disposal is the nerve or joint block. By anaesthetising regions of the limb or particular joints and then seeing how the horse moves afterwards is like asking a horse if it hurts and where. Nerve and joint blocks are used also to assess the significance of clinical findings such as a swollen joint or a radiographic abnormality associated with a joint. Often what is actually observed in older performance horses is a complex multilimb lameness; here blocks are invaluable for working out what is significant. One thing that must be remembered is that during this examination evidence of old injuries may be found, but they may not be causing performance limiting pain, they may actually be settled and insignificant. Unfortunately it is not possible to fix all ailments that are performance limiting, however it is still worth looking to see what problems are present and to then work out a treatment plan. This may include medication of gastric ulcers, liaising with farriers over foot balance, medicating joints, shock waving high suspensory injuries or involving physiotherapists in dealing with muscular stiffness.

he first ever Newlands Corner RC ‘Riding Club Horse of the Year Show’ was held this summer, offering perhaps the most prestigious prize in riding club history – a saddle, sponsored by Greenwich Olympian Saddles. There was friendly rivalry and hot competition from riding club members to win this beautiful bespoke, made-to-measure saddle. Other prizes included a bridle sponsored by Equessentials plus rugs and various goodies sponsored by Mayes & Scrine Equine Veterinary Practice. Judges were looking for an outstanding example of a riding club horse - an athletic, well moving horse with a good jumping technique and attitude, who has undergone correct training to perform a good dressage test and who has developed physically and mentally into an ideal riding club horse. The horse and rider partnership was also taken into consideration. The championship show consisted of a three-phase competition. In the first phase the horse was judged on conformation, suitability and temperament, shown in-hand. The second phase consisted of a dressage test, following Riding Club rules. The third phase consisted of a course of show jumps and examples of cross country jumps, style, attitude and harmony between horse and rider were all given marks out of ten.

There were two classes – the Riding Club Horse of the Future 2015 and the Riding Club Horse of the Year 2015.

Woody wins the judges’ respect

The winner of the Greenwich Olympian saddle for the Riding Club Horse of the Year was Lisa Smith with her horse, Ringfort Respect (Woody). Lisa has been a member of NCRC for 31 years, and has owned Woody for nine years, having bought him aged four. Together they have represented the club at all disciplines over the years, winning at the nationals in the Intermediate Horse Trials team, and qualifying in Open Horse Trials and Open Show jumping going to Aston le Walls and Lincoln. Lisa and Woody also took part in the Badminton Grassroots BE100 in 2010. “We love being part of a team and representing the club. We had a nasty fall cross-country schooling in 2010, resulting in Woody breaking two vertebrae in his neck and me being a lovely shade of purple in more places than I care to remember. It was a long road back to fitness following three months’ box rest and a further three months quiet rehabilitation. With neither to us having jumped for six months, it took time for us (well, me mostly) to get our confidence back, but Woody was up for it almost immediately. I have to say that Woody has been my ‘Horse of a Lifetime’ and taken me further than I ever thought I’d go, pushing me out of my comfort zone and probably coming 20 years too late for me to fulfill his potential! I am so thrilled to have won this amazing saddle, and might add that with 45 years riding under my belt this will be only my second saddle owned from new.”

Chester proves he has much more to give

The Riding Club Horse of the Future was won by Wiscombe Chester with Christine Lister. Christine said: “My horse Wiscombe Chester is now 17-years-old. We bought him 12 years ago, for my youngest daughter to do Pony Club and they went to on do British Eventing. However, he was quite a handful as a youngster. Five years ago my daughter had a baby and didn’t have time to ride, so I had him all to myself. He is not brave - nor am I - and I have fallen lots of times and even once had an air ambulance out to treat me. Helped by the clinics at Newlands Corner Riding Club, with fabulous Jackie Selway lessons, competing at their jumpcross and particularly taking part in the two-day camp this summer, both our confidence has grown so much. So, winning the Riding Club Horse of the Future has inspired me and made me face my fears of jumping and look forward to next year. Who knows what that will bring? Thank you to everyone at Newlands Corner Riding Club for helping me and my lovely Chester to achieved that very special win.“

Smashing youngster

Wendy Caller was fourth in the Riding Club Horse of the Future with her seven-year-old horse, Smash. She said: “I came to the NCRC Horse of the Year Show and absolutely loved it. I entered the Future Horse of the Year with my Welsh Section D, Smash. Everyone was so friendly, both competitors and judges. It was a super day and such fun and really well organised, the sunshine even made an appearance! I’ll definitely be coming along next year, thank you.” Chris Hinton of Greenwich Olympian Saddles said: “We are excited to be sponsoring this new initiative with Newlands Corner Riding Club in a ground-breaking competition which promotes good training and all-round exceptional horsemanship.”

FEED NEWS

Feeding the Right Amount of Energy for the Level of Activity Words by Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds

“F

eeding the right amount of energy for the level of activity” sounds a little daunting “get it exactly right” is the implication, with the added imposition of knowing exactly what you will be doing tomorrow and therefore calculating what is required and how to fulfil this requirement. Now this is exactly what a commercial nutritionist does for production animals. We can calculate to the nearest unit how to balance grass or silage to optimise milk yield in a dairy cow, or how best to feed a piglet to put it on a higher plane of nutrition, but when it comes to the horse there are so many variables as to make the job less of a science and more of an art.

Level of energy required

Having said that we do know what the horse’s requirements are, not only for maintenance but also a whole series of activities. These activities can be subdivided into low, moderate or intense – or variations – but we do have more information than this. It’s just that getting too accurate with an individual can be counter-productive as there are so many variables involved. For example riding a 500kg horse out on a one hour walk expends 10MJ of energy; combine the walking with trotting and he is using 20MJ of energy and including cantering 30MJ. Extend that over two hours (probably less cantering and more walking) and the value is 45MJ. Hard and fast figures but my first reaction to this is: How many combinations of walking, trotting and cantering can you fit into one or two hours, so will you ever have the right answer. Even if you do it means that you would have to plan, in detail, your day’s activity and calculate your horse’s needs. Now this is perfectly do-able – after all it’s how we feed the dairy cow – but the horses requirements may then change from day to day. There are other factors involved. For example in winter, when the temperature drops the horse needs an extra 2MJ per degree Celsius to maintain body heat,

so we are now calculating the effect of tomorrow’s weather (and we know how accurate that is!) and adding that to the mix. Add wind chill, the effect of providing a rug, the temperature in the stable and suddenly it’s like a very hard mathematical calculation. When you look at tables of energy requirements or feeding recommendations on websites, this level of intricacy is hidden under broad definitions of activity – hacking, endurance, eventing etc. and suddenly it’s a lot easier. For the 500kg horse daily requirements are 102, 122 & 142 MJ per day. These will be average values and are based on research led equations. That is they are indications rather than absolutes for your horse.

What are you feeding? Another confusion is the actual energy level of feeds, whether straights or compounded, hard feeds. There is not a standardised framework for calculating energy levels of feeds and some hard feeds don’t declare values when you are researching these products. For example, beet pulp energy can be calculated at 12 to15MJ/kg depending on whose system you use. Interestingly the NRC in America actually gives the higher energy value as they take into account the proven prebiotic effect of beet pulp. So far I’ve been rather negative on the topic of feeding the right amount of energy, and so will change tack slightly by pointing out that the source of that energy is also important. Energy is the result of metabolic reactions which “extracts & stores” it in a range of products, such as nucleotides, reserves (fats and glycogen) and structure (proteins etc.). For fast twitch muscle activity (power), active absorption of nutrients and blood brain function glucose – derived from starch – is essential as it can release energy in the absence of oxygen, otherwise other nutrients, especially the hindgut fermentation products of fibre, are prime energy sources.

Forage, Fibre, Feed

Now matching energy to activity is really quite easy, and it’s based on the philosophy of Forage, Fibre, Feed. Forage supplies the base line, feed gives us the top up nutrients, starch, minerals, vitamins and preferred nutraceuticals, and fibre gives you the flexibility to feed for daily variance. For example, using Speedi-Beet or Fibre-Beet, whose presence will help maintain the right microbial activity in the hindgut, you can maintain your hard feed at a sensible level and increase/decrease your energy intake on a daily (or longer) basis. As an example a 500kg horse: Light Exercise (2 hours walking) Energy needed = 102MJ per day 2kg Compound, for example Baileys No. 2 Working Horse , 500g Speedi-Beet or 1kg Fibre-Beet (dry weights, soaked as recommended) and free access forage. Moderate Exercise (as above but with ½ hour cantering/trotting) Energy needed = 118MJ per day 2kg Compound, for example Baileys No. 2 Working Horse , 1kg Speedi-Beet or 2kg Fibre-Beet (dry weights, soaked as recommended) and free access forage. And the way to make sure this is right for the level of activity? Watch your horse and his condition because this is the best indicator there is. For more information on Fibre-Beet or Speedi-Beet please contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Feed news

Winter Feeding Now that the temperature has dropped it is important to consider what you are feeding your horse in relation to his workload. Your horse will burn more calories because of the drop in temperature, but unless he is in heavy work, this increase in calories should mainly be made up of a fibre based feed. All the major feed companies can provide advice via email or phone and we recommend you contact them if you need more

Rowen Barbary ReadyFibre Mash With the lower nutritional value of grazing and colder temperatures it is important to keep fibre at the forefront of any horse’s diet, whether stabled or living out this winter. ReadyFibre Mash is made out of 100% high digestible fibre and is ideal to use to help maintain the fibre levels in the diet. Taking just five minutes to soak to form a healthy soft textured mash it is extremely palatable for horses who have trouble chewing long stem fibre and it can be used as a complete fibre replacer. With a very low starch and sugar content and no cereals ReadyFibre Mash is a very versatile product that is suitable for feeding to horses that suffer from laminitis and Cushing’s. www.rowenbarbary.co.uk

Mollichaff Extra Forget your shopping list of mineral and vitamin supplements and save on your spending at the same time. By carefully choosing a feed or chaff that is fortified with a full range of vitamins and minerals relevant to your horse’s requirements, you may find you have no need for expensive supplements to add to your horse’s diet. Mollichaff Extra is a high quality, dust-free chaff combining wheat straw with a unique low sugar dressing and a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals. It contains limestone and a specially formulated mineral and vitamin supplement. The added minerals and trace elements are selenium, copper, magnesium, manganese, iodine and iron. The vitamins are A, B1, B2, B6, B12, D3, E, niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid and biotin. Together these benefit the condition of all horses and ponies especially those on a low concentrate/high forage diet and breeding and young stock. www.horsehage.co.uk

Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes New improved Baileys Top Line Conditioning Cubes contain an enhanced antioxidant package with natural grapeseed extract, vitamins C and E and Sel-Plex® organic selenium, to provide support for the immune system should the underweight horse be feeling run-down. Help for the digestive system has also been added in the form of probiotic yeast and Digest Plus prebiotic, supporting and stimulating beneficial gut bacteria and improving digestive efficiency. “New Improved” Top Line Conditioning Cubes are available from mid-November, look out for the bright new packaging! www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

New Baileys High Fibre, High Oil Conditioning Mix Baileys’ new Slow Release Condition & Competition Mix is a high fibre, high oil mix designed to deliver highly digestible slow release calories to those looking for a reduced starch conditioning option. Containing Alfalfa Blend and Outshine high oil supplement, so there should be no need to add extra, this new mix is ideal for stressy types and includes Yea-Sacc® and Digest Plus to promote digestive efficiency. With performance levels of vitamins, Bioplex minerals and antioxidants, including SelPlex selenium and vitamin E, Slow Release Condition & Competition Mix will suit resting or hard-working horses alike. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

New TopSpec 14% Mix New TopSpec 14% Mix is a very palatable mix which is perfect for fussy feeders that reject low starch cubes, but need additional feed alongside a feed balancer. 14% Mix is formulated utilising highly digestible fibre sources and cooked cereals to improve digestibility. 14% Mix is designed to be added to a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement and therefore contains no added vitamins or trace-elements and is a blend of straight raw materials rather than a complete feed. One of the ways in which blends are superior to most straights however, is that they have been supplemented with the major minerals calcium, sodium and magnesium. For example, feeding 14% Mix instead of cooked barley/sugar beet/oats/alfalfa to working horses, reduces or eliminates the need to add salt. 14% Mix has a high energy (calorie) level of 13MJ/kg, which, together with the protein, will promote condition and topline, and provide the energy for hard work. The formula maximises the use of highly digestible fibre sources and contains a good level of oil to help promote a shiny coat. When to use 14% Mix:• Fussy feeders that need additional energy for work and/or to promote condition and topline. • Competition horses and show horses when fed with a TopSpec feed balancer e.g. TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer. • Racehorses when fed with a TopSpec feed balancer e.g. TopSpec Racing Feed Balancer (see Racing and Stud Feed Balancer). • Youngstock, Broodmares and Stallions fed with a TopSpec feed balancer e.g. TopSpec Stud Feed Balancer. www.topspec.com

NAF Haylage Balancer NAF Haylage Balancer is formulated to supplement the haylage rich diet by working to slow down the rate of passage of partially digested food through the hind gut, and therefore allowing your horse or pony time to fully optimise their roughage intake. Maximising the digestion enables each horse and pony to gain the most nutritional value from their forage, and the vitamins and minerals supplied by Haylage Balancer means the horse or pony is receiving all the nutrients they require. A naturally balanced formulation to help maximise your horse and pony’s roughage intake while working towards maintaining a healthy and comfortable gut environment. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Equine America PROGEST™ Pro-Biotic Weight Gain Supplement The horse’s hind gut is full of bacteria which aids the breakdown and digestion of fibre. Stress from training, competition, a change in management, yard or food, can have a negative effect on this, reducing the horse’s ability to digest and absorb food correctly. Progest contains yeast products which aid the bacteria in the hind gut, optimising digestion and, therefore, increasing the nutrients gained from the food. Progest should also be given after any treatment with antibiotics as these will affect the population of hind gut bacteria. www.equine-america.co.uk

Lifeforce Range from Alltech Not only does the digestive system generate warmth it also plays an essential role in bolstering the immune system. The immune system is the horse’s very own natural defence mechanism, which is constantly under attack. If the immune system is adequately supported by good nutrition it is better placed to fight off infection and help the horse to thrive through the harsh winter months. By supplementing the diet with yeast cultures, like those found in Lifeforce, you can help reduce hind gut acidity, creating optimum conditions for the beneficial bacteria to flourish, thereby improving digestion, as well as nutrient absorption and buffering against digestive upset. The Lifeforce Range from Alltech has been designed to optimise the digestive health of horses at every stage of life, from breeding stock to leisure and performance horses. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

Nettex Arthri-Flex Nettex Arthri-Flex is an advanced joint care supplement that delivers long-lasting results. TRIED & TESTED... Bedmax bedmax is the uK’s largest producer of bespoke dust free bedding for horses. Tailor-made specifically for horses, and offering real value for money, bedmax is an easy-to-use bedding containing no preservatives, which benefits from the antiseptic properties associated with pine. The flakes are designed to produce a deeper, more aerated bed and are made in strictly controlled conditions to ensure the same high quality in every bag. This bedding provides a healthy, dust-free, stable environment. It maximises cushioning for joints, minimises moisture that can damage hooves, and provides maximum comfort and support. “The bedding that you choose for your horse is just as important as the feed that you choose for your horse, as bedding can affect a horse’s health in the stable in a number of ways.” This is the message from bedmax shavings who have completed research into health issues which can be affected or improved as a result of choosing and appropriate bedding.

Dust in bedding allergic reaction to airborne dust resulting in respiratory problems or disease is probably the main health risk. bedding is likely to be the single biggest source of dust in the stable. at very least, dust can compromise health and performance; at worst it causes cOPd resulting in severe and sometimes chronic damage. It is therefore critical to be sure that the bedding used is as free of dust as possible. Other health issues to consider in choosing bedding area: • Hoofcare: The correct moisture level is important as very dry and absorbent bedding dries and cracks hooves. • Support - Bedding must provide support under the hoof and under the weight of a resting horse.

• Joints: Resilient, ‘springy’ bedding helps cushion joints when horses are lying down or rolling. • Sleep: Horses need to lie down to gain rem sleep. comfort, support and cushioning encourage this. • Ammonia: Recent research confirms that ammonia can cause respiratory disease as well as damaging hooves. How the bedding manages ammonia could be a key factor in safeguarding the horse’s health. • Hygiene: Good bedding and good management play a key role in maintaining fundamentally important hygienic conditions in the stable. www.bedmaxshavings.com LR Comment: Bedmax created a very clean, deep bed, which smelt fresh. The horse who is tabled on Bedmax is generally quite clean and I just had to remove the droppings and a wet patch, which is always in the same place in his stable. I was impressed by the Bedmax and found the banks remained clean and dense and just needed turning each day. I think the secret to using Bedmax is to make sure you have a deep cushioning bed, which will soak up any wet, making it easier to manage and keep clean. december 2015 / january 2016 Localrider 77
