Welcome 28 W 36
hat an incredible year 2016 has been for equestrian sport. There have been so many fantastic competitions that sometimes it is difficult to give them the recognition that they deserve, as we are always moving on to the next great event, but as the New Year approaches I encourage you to take time to reflect on what you did and what you achieved with your horse this year. Setting goals is a great way to start the New Year, whether this is something competitive like qualifying for a competition or simply riding on the beach with your friends. The best advice I can give here is to write everything down and keep referring back to your list throughout the year. It can often be surprising just how much you have achieved without even realising.
Young riders

Keeping with the ‘new’ theme, it was wonderful to see so many young riders competing at the Children In Need Show at Brendon Stud (see page 36). One of the best parts of my job is following the young riders as they progress through the ranks and with the children of at least three international show jumpers (Louise & David Simpson, Georgie Crumley and Ben Dalton) winning at the show, I am looking forward to some exciting years ahead.
Celebrate at Olympia There is still lots to look forward to in 2016, particularly the World’s Greatest Equestrian Christmas Party at Olympia. Some of you will be fortunate to have tickets for Wednesday night’s performance and what is set to be an emotional celebration of the most incredible dressage horse in the world, Valegro. The programme is packed with seven full days of action including the BSPS Ridden Mountain & Moorland Championships, which will see several local combinations competing for the ultimate title for native ponies. Turn to page 14 to see which local riders have qualified for the final. Whilst Olympia is undoubtedly a brilliant place for last minute Christmas shopping, it is probably wise to start planning early. We have a comprehensive Christmas Gift Guide on page 16 and hope you will find that there is something for everyone, including your horse too. If you are a regular reader, then why not add a subscription to Localrider Magazine to your wish list. We have a special promotion running currently. For just £20.00 you will receive eight issues a year and this fantastic gift box delivered to your door. Turn to page 21 to find out more.

NEWS Don’t Miss Great Charity Raffle
S
urrey-based young rider, Caitlin Fahy has organised a Christmas Raffle with brilliant prizes set to appeal to equestrian and animal lovers. Caitlin is raising money for the Brooke and Camps International. Caitlin said: “Brooke is an Caitlin Fahy international animal welfare charity working to improve the lives of working horses, donkeys, mules and the people who depend on them. I want to support this charity after finding out about its work from reading and watching videos posted by Charlotte Dujardin, who is my idol and I have been lucky enough to meet a couple of times. My second charity is Camps International. I am volunteering on an expedition to Kenya next July where I’ll get the unique chance to live and work as part of the community, helping local adults and children improve their standard of living in a sustainable way and supporting various conservation efforts to safeguard the future of some pretty impressive wildlife including elephants. I have done numerous events this past year including cake sales, car boots, selling items on social media and getting myself a job in a local cafe. So far I have raised over £1,000.” Caitlin hopes that the raffle which will be held at Whipley Manor Farm, Bramley GU5 0LL on Sunday 18th December, will add to her total raised so far. Prizes include a pair of jump wings, indoor school hire at Parwood Equestrian including a lesson with Sam Osborn, various NAF products, plus lots of other goodies for all the family including a Christmas cake and cuddly toy.
There were regular clinics with Emma Jayne Dujardin at Equi-Kids HQ Team Equi-Kids
Equi-Kids go Showing with Dujardin This summer has seen Team Equi-Kids up and down the country selling their incredibly fashionable equestrian clothing for Tots to Teens, in their new pop up shop. You may have seen them at Hickstead, Edenbridge, Hop Farm or somewhere else. If this wasn’t enough the Equi-Kids team also decided to hold a series of Summer Showing Clinics with Brilliant Emma Jayne Dujardin. The clinics were a sell out from the day one, with ponies and horses of all shapes and sizes traveling from far and wide to participate. The clinics were held at Equi-Kids Headquarters, with Emma Jayne giving her wise words of advice from over 15 years of experience as a showing producer. She helped not just with the riding, but also answered questions regarding rules, correct attire, as well as turning out of horses correctly. She even pulled some manes and tails in-between lessons.
Tickets cost £5.00 each and can be bought via Paypal in advance by contacting lisamfahy@yahoo.co.uk

Save the Date for London Show The London Spring International Horse Show, a sixday extravaganza of world class dressage, national and international showjumping, plus a host of sporting and musical entertainment, will take centre stage at the Ex-Cel London at Royal Victoria Docks from 12th to 17th April 2017.
Currently celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Emile Faurie Foundation has been selected as this year’s supported charity at Olympia. The charity has helped in excess of 9,000 children learn to ride since it was founded in 2006. The benefits go far beyond simply learning to ride an Emile is frequently hearing from teachers that they also observe changes in the children’s behaviour: their attendance goes up, they concentrate more, they are more respectful and in general their behaviour is better. Each year a large amount of money is raised through the much loved ‘Strictly Come Dressage’ Show at Oldencraig Equestrian Centre. It is hoped that the show will run again in spring 2017.
The Fishing Fly collection The Royal Warrant holding store and iconic establishment Farlows of Pall Mall is currently selling Lai’s limited collection of ladies’ couture felt hats entitled ‘Fishing Fly’, such as the Green Highlander pictured here. Each design is unique and was inspired and named after a fishing fly with all the romance, beauty and craftsmanship the tying of traditional Scottish salmon flies evokes. Farlows supports bespoke craftsmanship and individual appointments can be made with Lai in store for advice or a personalised bespoke fitting of the hats. Lai Symes trained in London with Rose Cory who was milliner by Appointment to the Queen Mother. In 2000 she was awarded The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship to study couture millinery. Lai, whose daughters are all keen horse riders, runs her business in Eastbourne on the south coast of England making finest couture hats to order using traditional millinery techniques. Since each hat is made by hand the result is an exquisitely finished, individual and beautiful looking hat. Materials can be hand dyed to achieve an exact match with a customer’s outfit. Lai’s great skill and passion is in working with the customer to design their unique hat for whatever the occasion. www.laihats.co.uk
Billed as “a celebration of the horse,” almost a week of thrilling action is guaranteed, with headline names topping the bill from home and abroad, across the morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Tickets are now on sale, together with hospitality packages, and further information is available at the show website: www.londonspringinternational.com

NEWS Unique Design Based near Sevenoaks, Kent Horseboxes are known for their easy to drive and uniquely designed horseboxes. Proprietor, Karen Chaplin said: “Our horseboxes have been designed so they are very easy to use, drive and handle, even if the driver is travelling alone. Because the boxes are designed and built in house they can be adapted them to reflect the specific needs of a client.” Karen continued: “Being horse owners ourselves and regularly travelling our horses, we understand the needs of the horse owner and a lot of ‘extras’ come as standard on our horseboxes. We are always happy to offer advice and discuss the client’s requirements, so that they can make an informed choice.” The horseboxes are constructed using modern composite materials, which are lightweight but incredibly strong. They have a fibreglass finish inside and out, which can be wiped clean in the horse area. They all come with a reinforced bulkhead, which is double lined between the horse and the cab. There are internal extra large tack lockers, which are designed to fit a dressage saddle, even with wide knee blocks. LED internal lighting in the horse and groom’s areas, help to keep it light, bright and airy for your horse. External LED lighting is also fitted as standard, making you more visible in the dark. There is CCTV in the horse area, which is viewable form the cab. There is also a reversing camera, plenty of storage, under the bench seating in the groom’s area and over the cab. Kent Horseboxes have some exciting new models coming in 2017, so keep an eye on their Facebook page and visit www.kenthorseboxes.co.uk
Lunging for youngsters Lunging as part of the basic training of a youngster, whether for sale or for a discipline, is valuable in many ways. Most horses are lunged during breaking yet this is often discontinued once they are ridden away. People often fail to realise the benefits of lunging as part of the horse’s progressive training. Training aids can encourage softness and stretching, whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. Dr Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that good aids, like the EquiAmi lunge aid, don’t fix or restrain but encourage engagement of the hindquarters and lightness of the forehand. In particular for youngsters, lunging with a training aid really helps with balance, encouraging the inside hind leg to step under which in turn frees up the shoulder and lightens the forehand and starts the development of core strength. The use of poles in lunging is a really good way to encourage the young horse to become adept with his feet and makes them familiar with poles. A 15m square of four poles with gaps at the corners is a great way to keep the horse from coming in on the circle. You can then introduce smaller circles which ask them to work over two at right angles then go large again. Two poles with a 1.2 m gap can be trotted over or used as a channel through which the horse passes or halts. These ‘games’ keep their interest and attention whilst laying the foundations for more complex exercises later. It’s important not to overwork young, developing muscles, but 15-20 minutes of gymnastic exercise on the lunge once or twice a week can give greater benefits than longer sessions under saddle. This can be a considerable time saver for those producing several youngsters each year and helps reduce the wear and tear on the horse’s joints and muscles. For more information visit www.equiami.com

GastriAid for a winning constitution
GastriAid is an advanced formula containing a unique blend of key ingredients to maintain gastric health, soothe the stomach wall and support the balance of pH levels within the gut.
GastriAid supports and maintains the digestive system naturally and encourages a healthy gut environment in those horses with compromised gastric health, giving them the stomach to perform. Emile Faurie “My horses feel so much more comfortable and have become much easier and more pleasurable to ride since being fed GastriAid!
Ella-Grace Richardson "Just wanted to say how much change I have noticed in my mare since feeding GastriAid. She is much happier and relaxed when competing and overall seems far more settled,"
"Within days of feeding GastriAid the results were brilliant; less worry, good droppings and a happier pony!" Susan Skeggs
"I wanted to tell you how impressed I am with GastriAid. I have tried a few things but nothing really seemed to work until I found GastriAid. It works like a dream and I will never be without it!" Jasmine Beal

ver 120 Riding for the Disabled members, representing 26 groups from across the South East, converged on the Haven Centre in Crawley Down in late October for the region’s Annual Conference, sponsored by East Grinstead’s Cowan Architects. This year, the theme was Gold and delegates were treated to meeting Rio’s triple equestrian Paralympic gold medallist, Sophie Christiansen and current carriage driving world champion, Anna Grayston, who thrilled them with their journeys to success. The day also included presentations from RDA UK Chief Executive, Ed Bracher on the future direction and growth of the RDA movement and the need to work together with other likeminded organisations for the benefit of giving disabled participants the experience they deserve. Chair of the RDA Participation Committee, Emma Wells also talked about the need for groups to
listen hard to their participants to understand what they really need and want from the groups while Natalie O’Rourke gave an insight into the trials and tribulations of setting up her new group at Park Lane Stables in Greater London. Sophie Christiansen described her experiences in Rio as truly remarkable. She said: “We were all united in one vision; to throw off our disability and perform in front of the world.” In her praise of the RDA she laid down her commitment to speaking out about disabled rights and accessibility issues admitting: “It’s amazing what you can achieve with a few gold medals! But none of this would have been possible without the start that the RDA gave me. Thank you – all of you – from the bottom of my heart.” “This is the beginning of new conversations,” said Regional Chairman, Lindsay Correa. “We need to set up Participants’ Pow Wows

Awards
Sophie Christiansen and Ed Bracher were happy to present Long Service Awards for 35 years to Judith Melstrom of Stella Hancock Driving Group (Worplesdon, Surrey), 30 years to Rosemary Harrison who is also retiring as Surrey County Instructor, Brenda Tolhurst of Chalkdown Group (Staplehurst, Kent) and Shirley Price of Heron’s Ghyll Carriage Driving Group (Whitesmith, East Sussex) and 25 years to Hiliary Hill of Heron’s Ghyll. The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Sue Turok, Chair of Samber Group, Chobham, Surrey. Her citation listed her as an ‘exceptional volunteer’ and the Group firmly believes, “that without Sue’s dedication, loyalty and hard work the group may have closed this year, but with her caring nature, positive attitude and dogged determination and belief in preserving the great work that we do, Samber is now successfully settled into new premises.” Gilly Roper from Bradbourne RDA (Sevenoaks, Kent) was awarded the coveted Tora Bray Perpetual Trophy for her tireless support of RDA in the South East and nationally. Chichester RDA Driving Group was awarded the Buchan Bobby Trophy for their amazing use of social media. On a sadder note, the Region said “Goodbye” to Retiring Officers, Janie Lawson, County Chair of West Sussex and Lesley Morrill, East Sussex County Instructor.

In the November issue we reported that the ‘Girls on Top’ team of Isabelle Sheehy, Bonnie Bourne and Katie Keogh had qualified for the BYRDS Team Quest finals at Bury Farm on 28th October. The team were delighted to finish in sixth place overall, particularly as they were the only team out of 22 in total to not have four riders, all the other teams were able to drop their lowest score. Following the great result Bonnie Bourne announced the official retirement of her 25-year-old pony, Haven Justin. Isabelle Sheehy had more to celebrate when she finished second in the My Quest BYRDS Intro National Final with a score of 72.9%, winning a silver medal. Isabelle and her pony, Dymock Ice Dancer, also finished second in their section on both the Saturday and the Sunday in the Team Quest competition, scoring over 70% on both days and they finished tenth in the BYRDS Prelim competition.

fantastic weekend was had by all at brendon Stud in Pyecombe for their annual children In need weekend show which included fun pony classes, arena eventing and show jumping. Over 200 riders attended the show with fantastic costumes including Pudsey, batman, Superman and a whole host of other superheroes. This year also included a visit from daisy The mule to help with the fundraising. Lucky dips, cakes and a table top sale all helped to raise a whopping total of £2,200 for children In need. Saturday’s competitors were definitely starting young with the youngest rosie crumley having just celebrated her first birthday! classes were extremely well supported with lots of winners including champion of the day two-year-old Superwoman, Isla moisey-Parr, on her pony bobbin, ably led by her sixyear-old sister, Sophia. another popular winning combination was six-year-old Lexi Hayday and Lily who won two classes. In the dog classes, mj the super terrier kept his dog agility title for the second year running, with a change of leader this year, emily morris. On Sunday, the adults turned out in fancy dress to support the cause too, with bottles of champagne to the best dressed in each class. Hannah ‘bananawoman’ Wright took one of the prizes, as well as second place in her arena eventing, just behind Karen Harnden and johnny. The jumping classes were well supported with ruth corbett and nikki Swannack winning rosettes, as well as prizes for their Fancy dress.

Revealin with Blo g all od Test s
n important tool in the management of performance in sport horses is the laboratory. A simple blood test can give an indication as to the well-being of the horse prior to competition. As we know there are occasions when we just feel a little under the weather, possibly we have no other clinical symptoms associated with this feeling such as a runny Words b y Ed Lya nose or a cough, but it can go on for several days and we just don’t feel on top of our game. Many horses of the Ar ll BVetMed CertE undel Eq M MRCV are the same, however they can’t tell us how they feel, uine Hos S there are no clinical symptoms to give us an indication that there is a pital problem; an astute rider may feel that the horse is a little flat. Obviously in this state the horse is not going to perform to the best of it’s ability. The biochemistry profile part of the blood sample really looks at the The most common cause of such a situation is one of the respiratory enzymes present in the blood associated with the internal organs, such viruses, as it is in people. as the liver and kidneys. These are important to monitor as inflammation of these vital organs can make the horse feel unwell and not perform to the best of their ability. It is unusual to have kidney problems. However For some owners and trainers of performance sport horses or racehorses, liver problems can be quite common, for example horses being fed hay at the start of the season, we will collect a couple of blood samples or haylage that is contaminated with ragwort or micotoxins can suffer from the horse a few weeks apart and try to work out what the normal from liver inflammation. parameters are in the blood for that horse, it may be the horse is not right at the time of the initial test, that is why we usually do more than one test. Once we have an idea what is normal for the horse we Evaluation of the muscle enzymes CK and AST is also important as they can routinely test prior to important competitions or when the rider or give an indication of the muscle function. The being pushed well in it’s fitness program. haematology profile looks at the red and white cell levels in the blood. The red cell content of the blood is important as this gives an indication of the ability of the blood to carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles where it is needed for exertion. A low red cell count can indicate that Other laboratory work that can be useful for managing sport horses the horse is anaemic; however different types of horse have a different would obviously include the faecal worm egg count to assess the expected level of red cells, for example thoroughbreds will have a higher effectiveness of the worming programme in the yard. White cell count
The Arundel Equine Hospital
The white cells in the blood stream are the cells that are responsible for combating infection and the levels of the different types of white cells give an indication of the likelihood of the presence of infection. We look at the total white cell count, this may be elevated in a horse with a virus or it may be low in a horse with a severe acute bacterial infection, such as peritonitis. The band or immature white cell count will be elevated in severe infection in response to the demand for infection fighting cells. More often, than not, the total white cell count is within normal limits, but the ratios of the types of white cells may be reversed, when there is a low grade subclinical infection such as a virus present. The proportion of neutrophils should be roughly 60% and the proportion of lymphocytes should be 35-40%. A change in this ratio is known as a reverse differential and is typical of viral challenges. Also with a virus there may be an increased presence of monocytes. Raised eosinophils may indicate parasitism such as intestinal worms.
Level of Fibrinogen
Also as part of our profile we look at the fibrinogen level in the blood. Fibrinogen is a protein that becomes elevated in the presence of infection, it rises relatively slowly and returns to normal relatively slowly also. It is useful to give an indication that there has been a problem that possibly has passed. Serum amyloid A, SAA, is an acute phase protein that comes up in the blood quickly in response to infection and falls quickly once infection has been brought under control. This is very useful, as it tells you what is happening to the horse now, as often the white cell parameters may not have changed yet in response to infection to detect on the sample, but the SAA will have started to rise. Conversley after infection has passed the white cell parameters may still look a little abnormal and the fibrinogen can still be elevated, but the SAA is normal, indicating the horse is going the right way. Albumin and globulins are also evaluated as part of our profile. The globulins are the antibodies present in the blood stream, they will rise in response to infection. Albumin is important as it assists in maintaining the water level in the blood stream, it falls due to poor nutrition or due to conditions such as diarrhoea causing protein loss in the bowel.

Targeted Winter Worming from Westgate R
esponsible horse owners try to minimise the wormers they give their horses, basing their parasite control on the evidence of worms being present rather than treating routinely. This helps to slow down the process of worms becoming resistant to the medication we have available. Targeted worming programmes are based on regular worm counts for redworm and roundworm and the EquiSal saliva test for tapeworm. There is however one dangerous parasitic stage of the small redworm that we can’t test for (yet!). Vets and SQPs therefore advise putting one proactive dose per year into your worm control programme as a preventative treatment against the possibility of encysted redworm (cyathastome) larvae. This is best done in the winter months between December and February. Many wormers treat adult redworm but only two, moxidectin (Equest) and five day courses of fenbendazole (Panacur Equine Guard, are licenced for the treatment of encysted stages of small redworm. However, just like in antibiotics, resistance to wormers is a growing problem. There is now documented cyathastome resistance to fenbendazole (Panacur) and pyrantel (Strongid P) wormers. Egg reappearance times for other chemicals is also reducing in places which is the first sign of resistance developing to these drugs too.
Does your horse have resistant worms? Many wormers treat adult redworm but only two, moxidectin (Equest) and five day courses of fenbendazole (Panacur Equine Guard, are licenced for the treatment of encysted stages of small redworm.

Killing two birds (or redworm!) with one stone, winter is the ideal time to include a resistance test in an annual programme. This is a worm count taken 10 -14 days after treatment to measure efficacy and ensure that worming programmes are working effectively. Results from previous winter resistance testing revealed that 40% of horses wormed for encysted redworm with fenbendazole and 2.8% of horses wormed with moxidectin had parasites that were showing some resistance to the wormer. Tests also showed 50% of horses with a positive redworm count that had been treated with moxidectin had been under-dosed, leaving those horses more susceptible to developing resistant strains of redworm. Vet Carolyn Cummins commented: “It’s imperative that we get worming right for the health of our horses. This simple treat and test can help to pinpoint potential problems and offer peace of mind that these important issues are under control. Resistance and the challenge to keep horses disease free from parasites is a very real problem and one that we should all be vigilant for. “Speak to your vet or SQP about which wormer to choose for your horse, know your horse’s weight and dose accordingly this winter. A worm count two weeks later is a very cost effective way to check efficacy and that your worm control programme is working. ”

The majority of small redworm species go through a lifecycle stage that is uniquely dangerous to horse health. Larval stages of the worm burrow into the gut wall of the large intestine; some continue their development here, re-emerging soon after to become adult, egg laying worms residing in the large intestine. Other larvae stay encapsulated for months or years within the horse’s gut wall, lying in a dormant state known as inhibited encysted larvae. Tens of thousands of these encysted larvae can line the intestine, where they impair absorption of nutrients. Here they wait until conditions, such as a change in season from winter to spring, triggers a ‘mass emergence’ from the gut wall. This activity can cause life-threatening bowel inflammation, known as colitis (larval cyathostominosis) in the horse.

A Westgate Labs winter resistance test costs just £5 (more details online). To take advantage of the special offer simply send the box end of the wormer (with the batch code) from either Equest, Equest Pramox or Panacur Guard from your treatments with the faecal sample. Take the sample 2-4 weeks after worming. Note: for a true result the egg count must be positive at the time of treatment. Special offer valid 1 December 2016 to 29 February 2017 inclusive. BITTING
Is head shaking an evasion or a bitting issue for this veteran pony?
q&a
Stephen Biddlecombe of SB Bits shares two customer enquiries on bitting
q
I do riding club jumping events with my 16.3hh ID X TB gelding. I am using a big-brand bit with a curved mouthpiece and a barrel joint. He sometimes raises his head in transitions and can lead on the forehand - my instructor suggested something with a stronger action to help lighten him, but we want a bit that would accommodate the horse’s big tongue. Any suggestions? Sarah Eden, Sevenoaks
a
A common issue is a large horse ridden by a lady rider who struggles to keep the horse between hand and leg, or off the forehand. It is often simply a matter of the rider’s core strength and size. Battling through with a ‘kind’ bit can have the unfortunate effect of heavy handed riding or niggling, as the rider struggles to keep the horse light in her hands. I advocate the Bombers Bits range, which is handmade in South Africa and is widely used by professional riders that need well-engineered bitting solutions with different mouth and cheek pieces. The range is renowned for its blue sweet The McHardy allows for comfort iron metal, which encourages of the horse’s tongue salivation. Bombers has a lovely bit called the McHardy. This 2.5 ring bit is a combination of a Jointed Happy Tongue with a Buster Roller centre link. It is an excellent bit when more control or lightness is required, allowing comfort for the horse’s tongue. The McHardy is often suitable for horses with a low head carriage that tend to lean on the bit; it offers increased pressure on the bars of the mouth, which act to lift the head, while the ‘buster roller’ central piece increases pressure on the tongue, bringing the chin in and encouraging the horse to soften as he plays with the roller. Although some may consider this bit to have a strong action, I would say it is an exceptionally kind bit, as it is anatomically designed for comfort, and creates a still, quiet line of communication between horse and rider. The McHardy has a medium port to create space for the tongue, relieving tongue pressure. For any dressage events, you could compete in a dressage legal bit such as the Buster Roller Loose Ring from Bombers, which has the 40mm roller link in the centre to increase tongue and bar pressure, with a loose ring cheek piece. The McHardy is a 2.5 ring bit combining a Jointed Happy Tongue with a Buster Roller centre link
q
My 18-year-old loan pony sometimes shakes his head when schooling. Back, teeth and tack checks are all clear. I ride him in a hanging cheek French link snaffle and my peers at my yard say the horse is simply evading. What bit may suit him? M Ellis, Uxbridge
a
The pony may just have a sensitive tongue, as headshaking is a classic symptom, and is a way of avoiding pressure; horses with sensitive tongues may also put the tongue out, or over the bit. Because horses are flight animals, they do not yield to pressure or pain, but instead move away from it. You could try him in a sweet iron bit, as they oxidise easily, encouraging acceptance. One potential bit is the Elliptical Loose Ring from Bombers Equestrian Equipment Bits. The bit features a 45 mm lozenge in the centre; it has a small surface area, so a horse or pony that uses its tongue as a means of pushing against the bit will draw back to a better point of control.
Shaking the head can evade tongue pressure; the Elliptical Loose Ring’s central lozenge helps combat this
Bombers Bits has hundreds of off the shelf bitting solutions at www.worldwidetack.com. Bespoke bits are also available - email info@equineman.com with enquiries, or if you have a bitting question for Stephen. DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 2017 Localrider 31

With the sudden drop in temperature you may be looking to buy your horse a new rug this winter. We have been testing a range of different styles of rugs for both the stable and field.
This warm turnout is perfect for keeping your horse snug in the cold winter weather. With an integral neck cover, this smart rug has a 1200 denier, ripstop, waterproof and breathable outer fabric, 350g insulation layer (the neck section has 150g fill) and a cotton lining. I like the combination design as I know there are no gaps for water to seep in, when the weather is particularly nasty. A great value winter turnout.
Equi-Thème Colorado Stable Rug
Equi-Thème Tyrex 600 D Combo Turnout Rug This waterproof and breathable turnout rug is made from 600 denier ripstop polyester with tapered seams, and is the perfect rug to have this winter. Featuring a nylon-lined neck that fastens with two adjustable straps that are secured with self-gripping flaps, this rug will help keep your horse warm and cosy out in the field. Synthetic sheepskin padding at the withers, aids to avoid rubbing and provide optimum comfort. Other features include low-cross surcingles, an adjustable rear strap and quick release fastenings at chest. Colour: Navy/Grey Sizes 4’6” to 7’0” RRP: £76.90. www.equi-theme.com LR Comment: My pony really was as snug as a bug in this rug. It is quite hard to find good pony rugs and I was impressed by this one. It was a generous fit all round with a substantial tail flap. A lot of thought has gone into the fittings to make them simple to use and secure.
The Equi-Thème Colorado Rug with checked design is brand new to the Equi-Thème range. Warmth is guaranteed with this stable rug due to its padding and polycotton lining, which also assists in improving extraction of moisture. This hard-wearing rug’s outer is made from 1200 denier polypropylene fabric and is available in a smart shade of Blue with Light Grey checkers. Features include shoulder gusset for ease of movement, adjustable and removable thigh straps, tail cord, and quick release chest straps with easy double strap adjustment and dual hook attachments. Colour: Blue with Light Grey check Sizes 5’9” to 6’9” RRP: £79.90 www.equi-theme.com LR Comment: This well cut simple stable rug fitted well. Despite the 400g fill, I found it light and easy to lift onto my horse. I liked the 1200 denier polypropylene outer as it isn’t absorbent like some fabrics, which can be a problem if your horse is messy.

Handmade from rich, sumptuous suede, the elegantly, tailored design provides a sleek and most flattering silhouette for any leg. Going flat for maximum comfort, the Regina features a low, block heel, a padded, interior leather lining and elasticated panelling for a flexible and better fit. The Regina design is further elevated by the signature interchangeable tassels treating you to a unique and personalised option for your boots. They arrive beautifully packaged and the moment I opened the box I was hit with the most beautiful smell of new leather. The boots fitted perfectly immediately and didn’t really require any wearing in. They have quickly become my favourite boots and I am looking forward to browsing the other colours and boots in the range at Olympia!
Extremely warm yet lightweight, this jacket is a good practical casual or yard jacket. It has a foldaway hood and I liked the zipped pockets as well as the twoway zip at the front, which is a bonus when riding. Can also be used as a layer under a longer coat as winter progresses.
Harry Hall Hi Viz down-like Gilet Quilted gilet with zipped rear double vents and pockets. Never look like a high vis frump again! Be safe and stylish. Sizes: 8 to 18 RRP: £50 www.harryhall.co.uk LR Comment: I tried the yellow version of the Harry Hall quilted Hi Viz gilet. I ordered my normal clothes size, but found the gilet a little on the tight size even when wearing just a T shirt beneath it, so would next time buy one size larger. Luckily this gilet has zipped rear vents which when opened made the gilet more roomy and also gave it a more flattering shaped look. The zipped pockets were very good for storing keys and phones when hacking out, and the reflective trims and strip around the middle of the gilet made me very visible. This gilet will be very useful in the chilly autumn evenings and on dull days when riding out.
Musto Snug Primaloft Jacket When you are active in the cold, pull on this super lightweight, snug jacket. The breathable, water resistant PrimaLoft® Black Insulation Eco will keep you warm without overheating, and is made from recycled materials so you can know you have helped preserve the outdoors you enjoy. The contrast colour zips give a pop of colour to this jacket too. Enjoy adventure protected from the cold in this warm layer, the Snug PrimaLoft® Jacket. Colours: Black, Blue Sizes: S – XXL RRP: £150.00 www.musto.com LR Comment: This jacket is so warm yet so light in weight and it can be folded down to fit inside a large handbag, so perfect for taking with you, if you are not quite sure of the weather. It is a great every day casual jacket, but also perfect for the stables as it is so warm. I used it under a larger waterproof coat on extremely nasty days.
Tottie’s Queenswood Breeches Tonal blue triangle print is set over a charcoal base colour to make you stand out from the crowd. Subtle, silicone knee grips ensure your leg stays in position, with extra support. Contrast, close contact cuffs in magenta provides a streamlined look and feel, whilst the breeches are finished with a zip fly and hook and bar fastening. RRP: £59.99 www.tottie.co.uk LR Comment: These breeches are bright and jazzy, which is great on grey winter mornings. They are comfortable and I liked the silicone knee grips which made me feel secure in the saddle.

Muck Boot Tremont Wellie This all-new boot delivers a stylish look that is exceptionally easy to maintain and clean off mud, salt, or snow. The interior uses 4mm CR Flex-Foam combined with a fleece lining to keep your toes cozy all winter long. The lining shock absorbing footbed uses a Dual-density EVA insole with Gel insert for additional comfort. The reduced heel makes these boots easy to walk on uneven streets and sidewalks while providing slip resistance with every step. Colours: Black, Navy, Forest Green Sizes: 3 – 9 RRP: £90.00 www.muckbootcompany.co.uk LR Comment: The first thing I noticed was the good solid sole and cushioned foot bed, which made my foot feel comfortable and supported. The boots are fleece lined and very warm. They are a tough durable boot, great for the stables, wearing in the garden or going on walks.
Harry Hall’s high viz Quarter Sheet A smart silver quarter sheet with tail flap. Designed to sit neatly behind the saddle and attach to the girth straps. Fully mesh lined and fillet string for added security. Sizes: Pony, Cob, Full, XFull RRP: £50 www.harryhall.co.uk LR Comment: This is the first time we’ve tried a quarter sheet and I loved it! Our other ride-on rugs have been fold back under the saddle types so this sheet was an interesting design to try. It fitted very simply with two adjustable webbing loops which fitted onto our girth straps and then a fillet string to stop the sheet flapping about. The integral tail flap was shaped to ensure it didn’t lift too much either and therefore moulded very nicely to my horse. The reflective material is very intense and shimmered even under the dark trees on hacks. The material and liner is very light so my horse didn’t get too hot even when we rode in it in the last few days of our hot September weather. We tried this sheet in all paces including over jumps and it neither blew about or moved backwards as many sheets tend to do. Finally, it’s machine washable at a low temperature.

Women’s Padded Jacket
Harry Hall Hi Viz Top The Women’s Hi Viz L/S Zip Top provides a bold and reflective outer layer, with wicking and air mesh material designed to maintain temperatures. With additional full stretch reflective arm, hem and zip piping, along with a three quarter-length zip with locking puller, the item is further embellished with thumb loops and contrast flatlock stitching for an item that is eye catching and reliable. Colour: Pink Size: 8 – 16 RRP: £29.99 www.gooutdoors.co.uk LR Comment: This top is much brighter than in the picture and it has reflective piping around the neck, hem and on the arms, which really dazzles in the dark. Whilst a bit thin for for winter, it would make a great Christmas present and really is a great idea for spring/summer. It’s light and cool to wear.
SealSkinz Chester Riding Gloves Waterproof, breathable and windproof, the gloves are aided by a performance synthetic suede palm with engineered reinforcement to provide durability on the reins. Pre-curved fingers add a further grip and dexterity, whilst anti-slip technology keeps your hands steady and eliminates pull out. A glove for a comfortable, firm grip, for year-round use. Colour: Black Sizes: Small, Medium, Large RRP: £36.00 www.gooutdoors.co.uk
THE ENVY OF MANY
LR Comment: Totally waterproof, these gloves are great for wearing all day on the yard. No more soggy gloves and cold wet hands when you hose off a muddy horse. They are lovely and warm too. Great for hacking, lunging etc, I found them a bit thick for schooling, but not everyone would.

SURVIVING
Winter Words courtesy of NAF
We hope this article, full of useful advice, will help you and your horse have a stress-free and enjoyable winter…
W
inter is a difficult time as horse owners. Short days, endless nights and the cold, wet weather can make us long for the summer, not that our horses would realise, tucked up in their lovely warm rugs. Whether your horse is stabled or turned out over the winter months, both scenarios present their own challenges. One problem is that the grass available declines in quality and quantity over winter, and whilst preserved forages like hay and haylage can make up that shortfall, and are great for gut health, they do tend to be vitamin and mineral deficient. Thankfully this is easily rectified by the simple addition of a balancer into the diet. These replace the important micronutrients your horse may be lacking and come in different forms, such as powder and pellet, to ensure even the fussiest feeder is catered for. If you know your horse is one to struggle with the dietary change over to his winter diet or is one who struggles to maintain condition, then make sure you look for products offering added condition and gut support. Gut support ensures they are maximising the potential of the diet as well as optimising their digestive transit. For example, NAF Optimum offers five star gut support in a highly palatable pelleted formula. Furthermore its flavour is sugar free, making it suitable for almost every horse or pony.
Stable Cough
It’s not uncommon to find that stabled horses can develop the dreaded ‘stable cough’. Dust and spores are more common in the stabled environment and with the enclosed space can combine to irritate the respiratory system. If you find this is the case for your horse, offering him a supplement formulated to support the respiratory
mucosal immune system may be of particular benefit. Look for products such as Respirator Boost, which contains Echinacea, a traditional herb with long standing use in herbal medicine, offering immune support, alongside valuable natural antioxidants, working to flush the system and maintain a clearway. Furthermore essential oils are fantastic for really encouraging opening of the airways, so look for a product which offers these in the formulation, when added to a warm feed these oils are intensified and smell great too.
Think about joints
If your equine friend is heading toward their twilight years or has been prone to stiffness, now may be a good time to look at inclusion of a joint support product. Joints are a complex area, with many components so make sure any product you feed is taking care of the joint as a whole. Glucosamine is a commonly used product, but look for the sulphate form as research has shown this to be more readily available for the horse. In addition look for other key joint nutrients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Chondroitin Sulphate as well as MSM for soft tissue support. Look for products, such as NAF Five Star Superflex, which contains natural antioxidants to synergistically with these nutrients to flush the area and maintain a healthy joint. If you feel your horse needs additional support look for products formulated for older joints, with higher inclusion of key nutrients as well as benefitting from Omega 3 and marine extracts, to really target supple joints.
terms of water content so we often hear of problems as we head toward winter. Being turned out onto wet pasture then standing on dry bedding can disrupt this balance and strip the hoof of moisture, which is when we start to see splits, cracks and flaking. Not only unsightly this can be potentially uncomfortable to your horse, so make sure you are feeding for hoof integrity from the start. For example, NAF PROFEET, which contains Biotin and MSM working in conjunction with ingredients such as Milk thistle, which offers invaluable support to the liver, an often underappreciated powerhouse in the horse, to support quality horn growth. Sulphur complexes, including MSM are important for the hoof due to its keratin base, which relies on sulphur for strength. By ensuring these sulphur bonds are strong you will be working to ensure the hoof can cope with the challenge of winter.
No Hoof No Horse
Another potential area for problems is the hoof and as we all know, no hoof, no horse. The hoof wall is in a delicate balance in

Coping with Mud Your horse’s skin can also face challenges at this time of year, from those tricky lumps and bumps to the wet itself. Mud is the biggest problem to contend with and can seem almost unavoidable, so we must learn how to combat it effectively.
Magic Mud Formula Wet and muddy conditions can cause the hooves and legs of your horse or pony to be vulnerable to bacteria and fungus. Magic Mud is a safe and soothing antifungal and anti-bacterial cream than can be applied regularly to the skin for healthy hooves and legs.

RenaSan’s EASY 1, 2, 3 Mud Fever and Thrush Prevention Routine RenaSan can be easily used to deal with bacteria infection like mud fever for thrush. Simply spray onto the infected area and leave to dry naturally. We all know that prevention is always better than cure, but when it comes to mud fever or thrush it doesn’t have to become a chore. With a simple 1, 2, 3 process you can add this into your winter routine, save time and keep your hands from getting cold from endless washing.
NAF Love the SKIN he’s in Mud Gard NAF Love the SKIN he’s in Mud Gard barrier cream is a great tool to have against the onslaught, this thick cream creates a physical barrier between the skin and the elements, supporting skin integrity. This can be used in conjunction with the Mud Gard supplement, working to support skin from the inside. Washing horses off after a canter across the fields can not only clean them off, but also help to soothe skin in cold weather so why not try NAF Warming Wash to make them feel pampered after a long day.
www.naf-equine.eu/uk
Fungatrol Shampoo and Cream Washing with water and soap or water alone can strip the skin of its natural protective oils. Fungatrol Shampoo from Equine America can be used to wash the whole horse or individual areas, protecting the skin from bacteria and fungus. This powerful lathering shampoo is a great start to the Fungatrol programme. Once the legs have been washed with Fungatrol Shampoo and any scabs have been removed, dry thoroughly and smear on Fungatrol Cream, which will condition and protect the skin from bacteria and fungus.

Make it easy with the use of RenaSan, a natural, yet clinically proven biocide hypochlorous spray. 1. When you bring your horse in from the field or you’re back from a hack simply wash off their legs, ideally from the knee down, make sure to remove all mud, dirt and grim. 2. A quick towel dry removes excess water 3. Then, simply spray on RenaSan the hypochlorous antiseptic first aid spray. Be sure to cover all areas that may be effected, heel, frog, sole and get in under the feathers. Make sure to soak the skin. And you’re done! RenaSan hypochlorous is a natural biocide, so can be left to dry on the skin. However you must read the label of the product you are using! Only UK and EU compliant hypochlorous products like RenaSan can be left on your horse’s skin, hypochlorite based products must be washed off with soap and water, so makes sure you are not using hypochrite (which is a form of bleach). RenaSan Hypochlorous First Aid sprays are highly effective, killing 99.9999% of the bacteria that causes mud fever, thrush and other germs.

nce again this popular annual show organised by Colette’s Horse Shows and held at the Faversham Show Ground (just off the A2/M2) included a varied programme of classes ranging from a fun, family dog show (with its own shopping village), in hand showing, ridden showing, jumping, numerous qualifiers and the prestigious TSR Regional championships. Due to the lack of rain, the ground was a little harder than usual and this did affect the higher jumping classes which were not as busy as last year. However, the showing entries were up on 2015 with the in-hand arena being particularly popular and most classes being split two or three times to accommodate the quantity and diversity of the entries. Jamie Sheehy judged the in-hand ring all day and commented on the quality of the exhibits saying: “It has been the highest standard I have seen this year and was extremely difficult to judge.” The arena started with Youngstock which was split into two sections. Vicki Blanchard won section A with her coloured pony Queensdown’s Washford Apache. Section B was won by Amy Knibbs and Gus. The Show Ring Experience class was also popular, being won by Tazmin Pearson and Kadira (who received a goody bag sponsored by White Witch Remedies). This year a Shetland/mini pony class was added and this proved very popular with a good number of ponies being entered. In the show jumping arena it was the morning classes that drew the largest number of riders. Mia Dwyer won the 40-50cm class which was sponsored by Marshide Riding Club. Kathryn Pullen won the largest class of the day (60cm) with Around the Twist, finishing a whole 1.5 seconds ahead of second placed Tegan Wallis in the jump-off. Aimee Cooper won the £50 cash prize in the 70cm class riding Desperate Dan beating Chelsea Pearce by only one tenth of a second! Once again the event included a whole ring of TSR Regional Championship classes which riders had qualified for throughout the year. Louise Eyres on Glebedale Sidelined won the M&M Championship (one of the more popular finals) and Millie Bowles and Cottrell Riverdance took the Members Championship and the Reserve TSR Supreme title. Sarah Chapman ran the TSR ring and lovely rosettes were awarded in all the classes with goody bags and other prizes on offer to the winners.

hen Albert Poucher bought Lodge Farm over 100 years ago, you can be sure he didn’t foresee that his great grandsons, David, Peter and Mark and great great grandsons, Howard and Ian, would be running a successful horse feed business as well as the family farm. Once a dairy and mixed livestock farm, Lodge Farm, still resides in the hamlet of Bardney Dairies and now with the cows long gone the farm is entirely arable with the additional enterprise of green crop drying. Long before any of the current generation of the family were born, the installation of the first drier took place in 1945. This side of the business has grown significantly over the years and with new equipment and drying and harvesting methods developed it is far more efficient than those early days.
The history of
Feed news
Emerald Green Feeds
Family Brand
In 2012 cousins, David, Peter and Mark, the current partners in the farm, decided to develop their own brand of horse feed, Emerald Green Feeds. As a new brand in the market, everyone worked hard to get Emerald Green Feeds out there and establish a desire for it. As with all family businesses it was all hands to the deck to do this. So while the men were farming it was down to the women and children to get out there and promote the products. They started out at Lincolnshire Horse Trials with a borrowed exhibition unit and some quickly designed leaflets, with the attitude of just wanting to get to the show and tell people about what they had to offer. Things have come a long way during the last four years, the immediate and extended family has worked around the clock to not only continue the arable side of the farm, but develop and grow the Emerald Green Feeds brand.
One site process
Emerald Green Feeds is fairly unique in the feed business, probably in any business sector; in the fact that the whole process the feed goes through is dealt with on one site. Growing the crops, harvesting them, and then returning them to the drying plant where they are dried for either pelleting or chop, following that it is bagged or baled
and the feed is ready to be delivered to the customers. Sarah Poucher said: “At Emerald Green Feeds we are lucky enough to be able to say that once tried our feeds sell themselves, we attend several of the larger horse trials and a few smaller shows and events each year and we give away samples of feed in our goodie bags. People love this and often return to the stand to find out more information about where they can get Emerald Green Feeds products from. As a relatively new brand in the equine feed sector we are trying to develop a network of stockists across the UK and Europe so that at every show we attend we can point our customers in the direction of feed merchant or tack shop near them. Because we are a family business and it is our name on the bags we feel it is even more important to be able to offer a consistent and quality product to people.” For more information on our feeds call 01526 398236 or visit www.emeraldgreenfeeds.co.uk
Emerald Green Feeds 100% Natural Grass and Alfalfa Feeds, see our website for details of the full product range.
“I use Emerald Green Feeds’ pellets for all of my horses because they are so versatile and provide a totally natural feed. My horses look and feel in great condition with gleaming coats ready to perform to their best.” Sarah Bullimore, 4* Event Rider

What to feed this winter... Feed news
As winter approaches it is important to remember that your horse may need its calorie intake supplemented with additional food and fibre, but in doing so consider the amount of work your horse will be doing during the week, to ensure you are giving the right sort of calories. For more advice, we highly recommend picking up the phone and seeking advice from the Feed company helplines.
Allen & Page Veteran Light new to allen & Page’s hugely popular barley & molasses Free range, is an excellent new feed, Veteran Light, which has been specifically formulated for older horses and ponies that are good doers. Providing all the nutritional requirements for optimum health (when fed at recommended levels) as horses get older, it still achieves a low calorie/energy level which is ideal for those who hold weight too well. being high in fibre and low in both starch and sugar (less than 10% combined starch/sugar), it is also suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis. made using only the finest non-Gm, Vegetarian Society approved ingredients, Veteran Light also includes prebiotics and probiotics to help maintain a healthy digestive system and linseed is added as a source of Omega 3. It also contains a carefully selected blend of herbs with added vitamin c and a high level of vitamin e. In addition, Veteran Light is also suitable for horses and ponies with intolerances to barley, molasses, alfalfa and/or soya. Veteran Light is highly palatable, even to fussy feeders and is perfectly suited to those at rest or in light work. For older horses that may struggle to chew and would therefore benefit from a soaked feed, Veteran Light is quick soaking in just 30-60 seconds. Veteran Light is beTa nOPS approved, as is the whole of the barley & molasses Free range. beTa nOPS is a scheme designed to reduce the risk of naturally occurring prohibited substances in equine feed. Allen & Page has produced a free factsheet on Feeding Veterans which is available from stockists, and as a download via the website at www.veteranhorsefeeds.co.uk
Rowen Barbary Leisure Plus Containing a blend of high quality ingredients Leisure Plus is the ultimate high fibre feed for horses and ponies in light to moderate work. Low energy levels are obtained through a balance of highly digestible fibre sources and cooked flaked cereals and Linseed and Soya Oil help ensure excellent overall skin and coat condition.
Rowen Barbary Condition & Performance containing a blend of Linseed and Soya Oil, supported by key antioxidants, condition & Performance helps to provide an extremely beneficial source of slow release energy to help improve stamina and condition in horses and ponies requiring a higher calorie feed. calcareous marine algae is designed to act as a buffer to help reduce acidity, benefiting gut health. Supplying a natural source of b Vitamins and amino acids brewers yeast is also added along with Seaweed, Spearmint and Garlic to help promote overall well-being. Fully balanced in essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements to help keep your horse in peak condition. www. rowenbarbary.co.uk
Baileys Barley-Free, Low Starch Keep Calm Baileys Keep Calm is a high fibre nonheating feed formulated to maintain condition whilst helping encourage a calm temperament. Containing Speedi-Beet, and fully balanced with vitamins and minerals, including calcium and magnesium, it is low in starch (7%) and sugar (4.5%) and designed to soak to a tasty mash in just 10 minutes. Baileys Keep Calm is barley-free, with linseed for a shiny coat, while extracts of flavours of essential oils give it an irresistible aroma. It is ideal for horses in up to medium work and even older horses with moderate calorie requirements, who need to control starch intake yet maintain condition, especially if they are also dentally challenged. www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk
Complete Feeds from Mollichaff
Calcareous Marine Algae is added to ensure good gut health and it is also fully balanced in essential nutrients. Natural herbs Chamomile Flower, Spearmint and Nettle help promote overall health and well-being with dehydrated Carrots added to help create an extremely appetizing feed that is equally delicious fed dry or soaked.
The mollichaff complete range offers three fibre-based complete feeds: mollichaff HoofKind complete for horses and ponies prone to laminitis; mollichaff calmer complete for nervous or excitable horses and ponies; and mollichaff condition complete for encouraging weight gain and condition. because the feed is fibre-based it takes longer to eat and more chewing is required, which is good as the horse is a natural ‘trickle’ feeder. by stimulating the production of saliva and slowing down the passage of food throughout the gut, mollichaff can help to promote good digestion and will satisfy a stabled horse’s psychological need to chew, requiring up to 8,000 chews per kilo to eat compared to as few as 1,200 for concentrates.

Feed news Controlled Condition with Saracen Horse Feeds
TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer
In order to assess your horse’s condition successfully it is important to regularly condition score or take measurements using a weigh tape. This enables changes in condition to be picked up on far more quickly than by the eye alone, and allows the necessary changes and dietary adjustments to be made before a horse becomes too thin. To help support weight management this winter, customers calling the Saracen Horse Feeds nutrition helpline will be offered a free of charge ‘Winter Conditioning Pack’, including a weigh tape, feed scoop and nutrition fact sheet.
TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer combines the benefit of a top specification conditioning feed balancer (TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer) and a joint supplement.
Initially Saracen Horse Feeds always recommend offering ad-lib forage to horses requiring extra condition. Not only does forage satisfy the horse’s natural desire to trickle feed and chew but it is essential to maintain a healthy digestive system. However, when forage alone is not sufficient to maintain body condition given the level of work being done or the type of horse, you may need to consider introducing a calorie dense ration. Conditioning feeds are specifically formulated to promote weight gain and consequently, they have a higher digestible energy value to support body condition. Saracen Conditioning Mix & Conditioning Cubes also uniquely include EQUI-JEWEL®, a high fat stabilised rice bran, highly effective at muscle and topline development when fed in conjunction with a suitable exercise regime. While the highly digestible ‘Super-Fibres’ and oil within the rations offer slow release energy and support digestive health and a trainable temperament. For further information on the Saracen conditioning range or a personalised nutritional advice feeding plan for your horse that requires more condition, call 01622 718 487.
It is a superb product for a wide variety of horses, from those working very hard to those on box-rest. Joint Feed Balancer is a very palatable ‘Non-Heating’ feed which can be fed on its own or with additional feed where extra condition is required. Joint Feed Balancer is formulated without cereal grains and provides only low levels of sugar and starch. The superb specification of Joint Feed Balancer allows horses to utilise far more nutrients from the forage and straights in their diet, which usually means that their hard feed intake can be reduced with many resulting benefits. www.topspec.com
NAF Five Star Optimum Feed Balancer NAF Five Star Optimum will help restore and maintain five star condition and health, maximise the nutritional value of the daily feed ration, and optimise the health and efficiency of the digestive system. Concentrated and easy to feed, Optimum comes in a highly palatable pellet form. It is of the highest supplement specification and has a great sugar free flavour. Optimum is formulated to complement either a high fibre low concentrate, or performance diet. When a daily feed is not necessary, the great news is that Optimum can be simply given on its own, directly from your hand. It is designed to optimise every horse’s diet from family pony to performance athlete. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet
Nedz Bed
A Super Fibre conditioning feed, Fibre-Beet is a formulated blend containing all the benefits of the original Speedi-Beet product, with added high quality Alfalfa for optimum condition and to provide quality protein for muscle tone and function. This high fibre feed has a high digestibility value providing slow release energy without the ‘fizz’. In turn this also helps generate heat helping your equine to maintain his core body temperature and keep condition. Fibre-Beet also provides a good range of minerals, trace elements and amino acids, and has added biotin for hoof quality. Ideal for horses and ponies prone to digestive upsets and very palatable for fussy eaters, Fibre-Beet also has a low sugar content making it suitable for horses and ponies susceptible to laminitis. Fibre-Beet can also be used as a forage replacer providing up to 60% of the daily forage allowance and is ideal for veterans even if teeth are poor or missing. Soaked and ready to feed in only 15 minutes in warm water – ideal when it is cold in winter - or 45 minutes in cold water.
Nedz offers enhanced hygiene and cleanliness for stabled horses, thanks to the addition of silver to its chopped straw products – a unique element to Nedz. Silver is widely renowned for its powerful antibacterial properties, making Nedz a smarter choice than ever for horse owners.
www.britishhorsefeeds.com
Silver has been recognised for its health benefits for centuries - it was even used to treat wounded soldiers because of its ability to help prevent disease by inhibiting bacterial growth. The addition to Nedz bedding is an important one, helping to protect horses from infection and illness. Nedz Original and Nedz Pro both benefit from being sterilised and dust extracted, which already gives horses a head start in maintaining respiratory health and promoting wellbeing. Each product is treated with Natural Nedz, which contains an organic blend of manuka honey, aloe vera, cade oil and now silver to provide unrivalled protection. This unique formula collectively provides anti-bacterial, antiseptic, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties – a comprehensive approach to maintaining good health in stabled horses. Nedz products offer easy to muck out, cost effective beds with exceptional hygiene. These combined benefits ensure Nedz is a comfortable choice for both horse and owner. www.nedz.co.uk
LR Comment: We will be trialling Nedz Bed over the coming months, but so far are delighted with the quality of the bedding. It makes a good firm bed and the wet soaks below the surface, so it is easy to clean out and stays looking good all week.

horsey other half The Horsey Other Half - Adrian Langan Come rain or shine, in good times or bad, Adrian Langan is out helping his wife, Dawn, and his two children, Niamh and Aodan, with their horses. He is such a helpful other half that the team at Localrider think it’s about time they clubbed together to buy him a waterproof coat. Name: Adrian Langan Home-town: Hastings, East Sussex Occupation: Carer Wife’s name: Dawn When and where did you meet? We met on the internet in 1999 and were married in 2000. When did you first realise your wife liked horses? When she got a horse on loan for the
kids in 2008. Then another for herself in 2010. Oh, then another in 2014. Suddenly we had three horses!
Do you ride yourself? I did once, on a beach
on holiday, aged seven.
Dawn pictured with her children, Niamh on Jubilee and Aodan on Nova. Niamh with Cleo and Nova
Favourite horse? Dawn’s horse, Nova, because
she did for her what I could not, after my wife’s brother died in a road accident.
Adrian Langan Dawn and Adrian with Nova
How do you support your wife with her horses? Where shall I start? I muck out, troop
through muddy fields to find them in, rain, snow and storms, carry bales of straw and hay, spend ridiculous amounts on rugs rather than a coat for myself! I’ve allowed my car to become another tack room. I supervise when the vet, dentist or farrier visits. I’ve even been sent out while Christmas dinner was on to catch an escaped pony! I’ve become a photographer, groom, trailer tower, sat in A&E and even, sadly stayed with the old pony during his last moments of life.
Niamh and Cleo
What’s the best thing about horses? I
get the telly to myself every weekend to watch football.
What’s the worst thing about horses? All of
it! The cold, wet, mud, snow, ice, the smell and the cost.
Do you go to shows or competitions, and if you do what sustains you through the day? Other blokes looking just as miserable as
me sustains me.
Do you have any hobbies? I get to watch
Dawn on Nova with Niamh on Cleo
Adrian with Nova
football at weekends whilst they’re out, but only if there is nothing to fetch, carry, lift, fix or a show to go to. I don’t have time for anything else really.
Most confusing thing you’ve ever heard her say about a horse? Well, I tend to switch
off and not listen as soon as the word horse is spoken. I find this saves any confusion.
What advice would you offer to anyone about to marry a woman who owns a horse? Get a warm waterproof coat before she
spends the money on rugs. You need steel toe cap wellies, because you will be needing them no matter what she tells you.
Each issue we will be featuring a ‘Horsey Other Half’, if you know the perfect person email alex@localrider.co.uk
