An article printed in Horse & Hound last year regarding Veterinary research in the Netherlands stated, that a study on a Chondroitin & Glucosamine supplement when fed to horses was no more effective than Placebo, in other words it did not work! CORTAFLEX® was subjected to a rigorous double blind study at Michigan State University Veterinary Medicine Research Dept, and it was shown to improve joint mobility. *For results of the study see website www.jointsupplementresearch.com Since the double blind study has been carried out, CORTAFLEX® has been reformulated with the addition of Hyaluronic acid, ASU and now Super Fenn. *CORTAFLEX® for people is a special formulation manufactured in a pharmaceutical plant.

Welcome 35 I

66

have had a brilliant month visiting several shows, including Heathfield and Surrey County. These one day country shows offer the spectator so much. As well as spectacular horses, there are cows, pigs and sheep as well as lots of wonderful trade stands selling a mix of products you don’t often find elsewhere. I came home from Surrey with some amazing bread flour grown and ground at Imbhams Farm Granary in Haslemere. Most of you will know that my own horse, Emily, is aging, she is 24 now, and whilst we haven’t competed for a long time we enjoy schooling, and hacking around the fields together. I hadn’t thought much about buying another horse, but at Surrey County, I felt like a child in a sweet shop. I was fascinated by Jane Townshend’s Champion three-year-old, Laurianta, as we have his full brother at the yard where I keep my horse. Lurianta is currently for sale, but realistically it would be hard for me to have a youngster at the moment, as they need consistency and I am often away with work. Pippa Funnell looked to be having amazing fun in the jump-off of the Area Trial and couldn’t stop beaming after she came through the finish. It reminded me of the fun times I had on some brilliant jumpers in the past. Maybe it is time I left the ground again. But then I watched the Riding Horse classes. Immaculately turned out, wonderfully elegant and they looked to me as if they were the right stamp of horse to go eventing too. Putting this issue together I’ve also been inspired to discover more about riding side saddle. It is definitely gaining in competitors and at both Heathfield and Surrey County the side saddle classes fielded some of the biggest class entries of the day. The next few weeks will fly by as we finish the August issue (make sure you send me all your news and reports) and prepare for the Longines Royal International at Hickstead. We are on stand 31A half way along the open side of the International Arena. There will be the normal mix of competitions and prizes, so please do stop by and say hello and remember to use your free entry tickets, see page 51. Have Fun! FREE TICKETS! To the Hickstead RIHS

Stable yards sought for rescued semi-feral cats A local animal charity - The Celia Hammond Animal Trust is seeking suitable outdoor homes for pairs and families of homeless semi-feral cats throughout South East England. Fantastic as a rodent patrol, these cats soon earn their keep in return for daily food and access to shelter – e.g. hay barn or tack room. The cats are neutered and micro-chipped and the Trust provides lots of support – loaning an initial relocation cage to settle the cats in and also lifelong advice and assistance should it be required. To enquire further please email sanctuary@celiahammond.org or telephone 01424 882198.

We have: 1 pair of tickets for Saturday, 5 pairs of tickets for Friday and 5 pairs of tickets for Sunday. To be in with a chance of winning a ticket to the event, find the answer to the following question: Who won the championship title for the Longines Global Champions Tour in 2014? Entries close 13th July, turn to page 32 to enter. www.globalchampionstour.com

Unable to meet demand Mountain Horse’s new Sovereign boot has taken the UK riding boot market by storm and, just a couple of months after its launch, supplies have just about sold out leaving consumers facing a frustrating wait. The Sovereign is already the must-have long leather boot for competitors, professionals and everyday riders. The lucky ones who got their orders in early are already enjoying this beautifully soft and smart leather boot that customers are describing as the “most comfortable leather boot ever”. But those who have missed out on the preliminary deliveries to UK stockists now find themselves on a long waiting list. “People might have to hang on a while until we can catch up,” explains a Mountain Horse UK spokesperson, “We knew this boot would be popular but the demand has blown us away. We simply can’t get them made fast enough.” For up-to-date information about the stock situation, go to the Mountain Horse UK website www.mountainhorse.co.uk, contact customer services info@horsemasters.co.uk or call 01462 432596

Lungeing for veterans Is there any point in lungeing an older horse? Horses, like humans generally become stiffer and less mobile as they age. Reducing the workload coupled with a change to the type of work can keep a horse happy and healthy for longer. Veteran horses don’t really thrive on being retired after an active life and, in a similar way to humans, benefit greatly from gentle exercise. Regular light exercise helps with joint mobility and stiffness issues that affect veterans. Encouraging stretching, bending, stepping under, swinging through the back are simple exercises that can be done in fifteen minutes on the lunge a couple of times a week and are more effective done using a lunge as such as the EquiAmi which gently persuades rather than forces the issue. Many of these exercises are just as beneficial when done in a forward walk. The warm up and cool down phases are even more important to the veteran as the muscles and joints will take longer to fully mobilize and need to cool down gently afterwards. The upside is that your veteran enjoys an improved quality of life and your guilt at seeing him bored in the field is lessened. Providing your vet is happy that your veteran can undertake some light physical, exercise there is a lot of pleasure to be had in improving his mobility. www.equiami.com

What boots are best for summer?

The heat reflective lining inside Equitector Boots

Equitector riding and yard boots with Climate Control Technology offer a solution for if you are on your feet all day during hot weather. These unique boots have space blanket technology in the interior. This reflects and disperses body heat. It has a cooling effect which when it is very hot outside prevents horrible sweaty feet. But they are not just perfect for the heat of summer. These climate control boots protect the wearer against the cold too. In winter, even if it is minus 25 C with regular socks on you will not get cold feet. The boots are made out of waterproof leather which is still waterproof after six hours of being submerged in water. They have rot proof soles and uppers, meaning you can walk through deep litter beds as much as you like. They are also Hoof Proof. The steel toe cap cannot be seen or felt, but be assured you will really will appreciate them when the unforeseen happens. www.equitector.com

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) enjoyed a day of celebrations in the company of Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, marking 40 years of RDA Carriage Driving. The Princess enjoyed driving displays from RDA groups and a demonstration of para driving. Colin Pawson of the British Driving Society took Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal guests on a nostalgic talk presents a rosette to Para-Driver Mick Ward through the last 40 years of driving at RDA, while carriages from then and now paraded the arena. Mark Broadbent of Fenix Carriages demonstrated the very latest addition to RDA Driving – a new purpose-built carriage for wheelchair users.

RDA Carriage Driving Chairman, Margaret Brockie, received a special award from The Princess Royal for her dedication to driving and for successfully encouraging the growth of the sport within RDA. “It was a great day of recognising how far Carriage Driving has come,” said Margaret. “We celebrated those pioneers who could see the potential of driving for people with disabilities, and showed how their vision has been realised in the vibrant and dynamic activity that so many benefit from today.” RDA Carriage Driving at 40 – a brief history and background to a week of celebrations Early in 1974, the Sandhurst Group of RDA approached the driving section of the Donkey Breed Society to see if they would co-operate with the group to experiment and try out ideas for teaching adults with disabilities to drive a pony or a donkey. After several sessions it was proved that driving for the disabled could be a success and all those involved were convinced that the scheme must become permanent. On the 12th June 1975, it was carried by the Council of the Riding for the Disabled Association that the constitution be amended to include driving. The Council for RDA appointed Phoebe Stewart as the first Chairman of RDA Carriage Driving and she had great support from Nancy Pethick, nominated by the British Driving Society, to develop the discipline and rules within the Association. The first driving group set up under the auspices of RDA was Windsor and Ascot and this group continues to thrive. RDA now has 66 groups providing sessions to 1026 drivers. The event at the Unicorn Trust Equestrian Centre forms just part of the celebrations going on across the country during this anniversary week. Many groups are holding events to mark the occasion; picnic drives, fun days and parties.

Loving home wanted for Snow White Snow White, a beautiful young cat, aged approximately two to three years was rescued by the daughter of one of the Pussy Cat Lodge’s volunteers. She found it, suffering from a large, infected wound and persuaded the owner to let her have the cat and provide veterinary treatment. Snow White has been found to be a cat with allergies, which flare up from time to time. In the right home, (as a single cat), with regular flea treatment and the correct diet, her allergies may settle down over time. Her allergy problem is likely to be stress related so this is the reason for her perhaps needing to be a single cat or one of no more than two, as she does appear to like other cats. She hasn’t had any allergy outbreaks for many weeks now. She is a very loving cat, slightly nervous at first, but once she knows you is keen to be fussed. Anyone taking her on must be aware of the fact that she may need regular trips to the vet for antibiotic and or steroid injections, initially at least. If you feel yours is the right home for this lovely girl, please contact Andrea on 07940913082 who is currently fostering her.

Exciting New Show The British Showjumping National Championships and Stoneleigh Horse Show will be coming to Warwickshire for the first time in 2015. The show will take place on the 11th – 16th of August at the National Agricultural and Exhibition Centre (NAEC), Stoneleigh. This exciting new show will feature World Class Show Jumping and is the summer highlight in the British Showjumping calendar. The prestigious International Stairway League final will take place on Sunday 16th August, culminating in a spectacular finale where the British Showjumping National Champion will be crowned. The new addition of Stoneleigh Horse Show will run in conjunction with the championships and is set to make a big impression on the showing scene. Uniquely, at Stoneleigh Horse Show, there will be no membership stipulations for any showing classes, including all HOYS qualifiers. This opens up the classes to competitors who previously may have been deterred from aiming for a HOYS qualification. However, it is not only competitors who are guaranteed a fabulous day out. The show also offers a great family day of exciting competition, indoor performances, hospitality and a retail shopping village. Entry for spectators wishing to take advantage of this fantastic show is free! For more information please visit www.bsnationalchampionships.co.uk

Sewing group help Air Ambulance A retired nurse from Wartling, who almost lost her leg in a horse carriage riding accident has helped make a quilt to raise funds for the charity helicopter that flew her to hospital. Sandra Pochin, 69, suffered a badly broken leg and six broken ribs when the horse suddenly bolted through a gate and she and the cart collided with a fence post. She has since made a good recovery and helped sew a patchwork quilt to raise funds for Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance which relies almost entirely on public donations. Sandra said: “It’s our way of trying to help the air ambulance in the hope that they can make some money out of it. I couldn’t have been treated any better by them and I can’t praise them enough. I owe it to them that I’ve still got my leg.” Sandra was training the horse for Carriage Driving for the Disabled when the accident happened in August, 2012. The horse’s owner raised the alarm, the air ambulance was called and the helicopter landed in a nearby field. The helicopter’s doctor and paramedic gave Sandra treatment at the scene before flying her to the regional Major Trauma Centre - the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. She spent three weeks in hospital before she was allowed home and recently visited the helicopter base at Marden to present the quilt which took four months to complete. Each square including one featuring the helicopter was crafted by Needleart members Maureen Wadhurst, Pam Britton, Pauline McFee, Barbara Willis, Marianne Gunther, Ruth Willcox, Pat Norman, and Sandra. he newly-founded Surrey Modern Pentathlon Club has been taken over by a committee of four enthusiastic parents. Initially established by Pentathlon GB, the parents have now taken over full control of the Club and are looking to take it to the next level by attracting new members and introducing all five of the disciplines in-house (fencing, running, swimming, shooting and horse riding). The intention is for the children to learn the technicalities of each discipline whilst working towards the different levels and certification required in an enjoyable atmosphere. The club currently run sessions every Monday during term time at St Teresa’s in Effingham from 6pm to 8.30pm. Classes are open to boys and girls aged 11-18 regardless of ability or experience. Although St Teresa’s hosts the Club, the aim is to attract children from all over Surrey and introduce them to the sport. There will be holding a taster session on 7th September 2015 where there will be coaches from each discipline and where parents and children can learn more about what is involved. Children may be especially keen or talented at just one of the disciplines - they do not have to be good at all five to be a successful pentathlete. Horsey holidays FEATURE

If you are planning a summer riding trip, here are Jenny Richardson’s top tips: ● Be honest about your experience. If you are going on a trek-style trip, don’t exaggerate your level of riding skills, you will either hold the other riders back, or put yourself in danger – either scenario could spoil someone’s holiday. Some travel operators specifically match riders with other guests of similar levels of experience. ● Get riding fit. For longer holidays or ‘base to base’ rides, this is probably the biggest issue that riding holiday guests face - a lack of fitness appropriate to their trip. If you can find time, try and get in some general fitness work before you leave home. ● Pick a trip that meets your needs. Truly adventurous rides may actually be very slow, due to difficult terrain, while beach rides can be fast and furious. Consider a training break, if you need to brush up on your riding skills - the UK and Ireland has many options that are close to home - why not make a long weekend of it? You can find training breaks for all of the main disciplines, including side saddle. If you want to take a non horsey partner, look for a dual-activity trip, like the ‘Anglers’ and Horse Riders’ Paradise’ holiday, detailed below. ● Pack according to your trip. A longer, trek-style ride will be informal, and you won’t need much luggage - in any case, you may be carrying it yourself every night to a new location. You can roll your clothing to save space, and store small items on your riding hat. Don’t forget several pairs of jodhpurs, gloves, shirts with collars (for protection from the sun) and a waterproof coat, and comfy shoes; especially if you may have to get off and lead, if you are heading somewhere with challenging terrain. Additions like sun cream, camera and sunglasses are also important, plus a bumbag or rucksack to store them in while you ride.

Words by Jenny Richardson BHSAI Hotels with an equestrian base are ideal if you don’t want to spend all day in the saddle

Training breaks will help you brush up on specific riding skills

● If you are heading to somewhere more luxurious, such as a hotel with an equestrian base, like Castle Leslie Estate, you will need some non-horsey clothes for the evening - a lightweight dress and sandals plus a wrap or scarf will be very lightweight to pack, for ladies. This type of trip is ideal if you don’t want to spend all day in the saddle, and like to explore new locations, as well as try other activities. ● Prioritise tacking your own helmet, so you know it is a good fit, and up-to-standard. Training venues tend to provide body protectors, but you may still like to take your own. Seat savers are ideal for trek-style rides!

Unique ‘Anglers’ and Horse Riders’ Paradise’ trip launches Many couples want to travel together, but have different sporting and leisure interests - this is notably common when it comes to horsey females and their partners. However, Ireland’s Castle Leslie Estate has solved the dilemma with several packages designed to offer couples different activities during their stay. The latest package is the three night ‘Anglers’ and Horse Riders’ Paradise’ trip. For the riding partner, this trip includes five hours of horse riding spread over two days. Guests can choose the type of lessons they want, based on their individual needs, from practise on the centre’s mechanical horse, to lunge lessons, flatwork, hacking and jumping. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy angling in one of Ireland’s best-preserved lakes. The beautiful Glaslough or Green Lake is synonymous with monster pike, and Estate records show impressive catches year on year, of 18-30lbs fish. The trip includes two full days’ angling. The trip includes three nights’ accommodation, a two course dinner in Conor’s Bar each evening, and a hearty full Irish breakfast each morning. Priced at £395 per person sharing. Please visit www.castleleslie.com for more information on breaks at Castle Leslie Estate, where Jenny Richardson is Equestrian Centre Business Manager. Riding holidays provide the chance to unwind, while indulging in your favourite past time Choose a dual activity break if you have a non horsey partner

W

e recently helped a customer whose horse can be very fussy around the head, and doesn’t settle very well when being ridden. He doesn’t like his ears being touched and wasn’t very comfortable in his single jointed snaffle and conventional bridle; here’s what I advised, to help him settle. Young and sensitive horses and ponies can often be reactive to the pressure created by the bridle or the bit, creating a common issue for horse owners. This sensitivity can be innate, a natural part of the horse’s personality, or it could have been created by previous owners or trainers. However, the initial thing to rule out is a physical problem. Firstly for a query such as this, I would ask whether the horse has received sufficient equine dental treatment. The bridle and the bit place pressure on the tongue, the bars of the mouth and the poll, so the first thing I would want to rule out is a dental problem! If you have a sensitive horse that hasn’t had his wolf teeth removed, this issue could may be the culprit, as the bit can interfere with the wolf teeth, causing pain. Ask a qualified vet or equine dental technician dentist to come and assess your horse’s teeth if you haven’t done so already, and keep up regular assessments and treatment to rasp any sharp teeth or hooks, and assess for unhealthy tooth matter.

The Micklem

Providing that all bases are covered in terms of dental care for sensitive horses, and that there are no further veterinary complications such as ear mites or pain in the poll region, in terms of a bridle, I like the Micklem. The Micklem has been specifically designed for those horses that don’t conform well to regular tack. Designed by trainer The headpiece of the Rambo William Micklem, Micklem has been widened the innovation is and padded; available in four based on increasing sizes, brown/black. £126 comfort in a range at thesaddleryshop.co.uk of different avenues, as it is designed from the inside out, following the shape of the skull itself instead of the outward appearance of the head. In particular, the Rambo Micklem Multi-Bridle avoids pressure on the facial nerves, the projecting cheek bones and the upper jaw molar teeth. This prevents the potential pressure put on facial nerves and the sensitive tissues lining the cheeks inside the mouth by tight fitting cavesson or flash nosebands. The Rambo Micklem provides a great solution for the many horses that resist because of pain around the bars of the mouth, hate significant pressure on the tongue and as a result fight the contact or get their tongue over the bit. The headpiece of the Micklem has been widened and padded to reduce pressure and is ideal for a horse that is difficult to settle, particularly if changing the bit has not worked.

Bridling the sensitive horse Words by Lucy Nicholas of The Saddlery Shop

Trouble-shooting: could your sensitive horse have ear mites? Because we rarely encounter problems with our horses’ ears, we often take them for granted. However, discomfort, headshaking or resistance to the bridle can in some instances be caused by ear mites. These cankerous little parasites are small insects, white in colour, and less than 1mm in size, so are only just visible to the naked eye. Ear mites can produce a waxy plug in the ear canal, reducing hearing and irritation. If ear mites are bothering your horse, the vet may need to use sedation in order to examine the deep ear canal, and recommend relevant medication and treatment.

Ear mites can cause irritation

Myler Comfort Snaffle

In terms of bitting, I also suggested a Myler Comfort Snaffle. There are various versions available - pictured is the Wide Barrel Eggbutt. These bits do not pinch like conventional bits can, and wrap around without the conventional nutcracker action, allowing independent side movement. Many of the mouthpieces in the range limit poll pressure, ideal for a sensitive horses, or those with a large or fleshy tongue. Ask an expert which version would suit your horse - if your horse likes a loose ring style, the Loose Ring Myler Comfort Snaffle is also very nice, and has a The Myler Comfort Snaffle sweet iron mouthpiece and copper inserts. limits poll pressure JULY 2015 Localrider 33

s n a r e t e V Still Going

Strong

Did you know that horses over the age of 16 are generally considered to be veterans? Nowadays thanks to improvements in veterinary science, welfare and equine nutrition, fit and active older horses are no longer being ‘pensioned off. Charlotte Collyer, senior marketing executive for one of the UK’s leading specialist equine insurers; Petplan Equine, explains what owners should consider for managing and insuring their veteran horse.

O

n average, one year of a horse’s life is equivalent to three of a human’s, so a 16-year-old horse is comparable to a 48-year-old human – hardly a pensioner by modern standards, especially when you consider that horses retiring from top-level competition often go on to enjoy a second career as a schoolmaster or reliable first horse. However, many insurance companies will only insure horses aged 16 and over for injury and not illness, so check this with your insurer, especially as one of the most common causes of equine fatality in the older horse is colic. And remember that because older horses have history, your insurer will need to know about your horse’s previous veterinary background. Horses which are well cared for should be able to enjoy an active life well into their mid-twenties. With this in mind, Petplan Equine became the first equine insurer to provide cover for illness as well as injury in horses up to the age of 25 if insured before their 20th birthday. However, adopting a ‘prevention is better than cure’ management programme should be paramount to your horse’s well-being, says Petplan Equine’s veterinary expert Gil Riley MVB Cert EP MRCVS, who advises: •

Keeping your horse active with regular exercise to ensure a healthy heart and that the rate of loss of muscle mass is reduced.

Making sure your horse is fit for the work you are asking of him.

Allowing your horse to live out as much as possible to keep him mobile, which is turn maintains flexible joints, increases circulation and improves digestion and respiration.

Ensuring your horse’s stable is well ventilated to avoid respiratory problems.

Having your horse’s teeth checked regularly.

Feeding plenty of dust-free forage as this stimulates activity of the gut and promotes good digestion.

Choosing feed designed for older horses, and possibly considering a supplement for joint or digestive health

Putting an effective worm control programme in place.

If you own or are thinking of buying an older horse you no longer have the worry of vets’ fees now that insurers like Petplan Equine offer full cover for horses up to 25 years. So there is no reason why you shouldn’t give a mature horse a great home and enjoy the benefits that come with that experience. When considering insuring your older horse, think about: is there is an age limit when the insurer stops offering full illness as well as injury cover? Are there any special terms and conditions like needing to ensure your horse is insured with the company before he reaches a certain age (with Petplan Equine it is age 20) so that full cover can be carried on into later years? Also talk to your insurer and be open about any preexisting conditions or previous illnesses and make sure you insure him for the activity you are wanting to do together. Then kick on and have fun!” For further information on insuring an older horse visit www.petplanequine.co.uk

The show jumper has short stirrups, as the ankle is an ‘anchor’.

A step ahead Words by Stephen Biddlecombe of World Wide Tack

D

id you know that the humble stirrup iron is believed to have been originally designed as early as 1000 BC, as a simple tool used to allow safe and practical mounting, and to ensure the rider remains balanced? Today, while those principles still apply, as horse-sport has become more and more advanced the simple stirrup now offers so much more. Most of us will have learnt to ride with standard Fillis stirrup irons. This traditional type is slightly heavier than some other stirrups, and offers a larger and thicker foot pad - ideal for beginners. An advantage to this type of stirrup is that if the rider’s foot falls out of the stirrup, it is easier for them to get their foot back in, because of the extra weight. However, as riders become more advanced and ask more from their own bodies, as well as their horses’, the need to optimise tack and equipment becomes more important. Standard Fillis stirrup irons offer a large and thick foot pad The choice of stirrup should depend on the discipline being undertaken. Pleasure riders or endurance riders often like wider stirrups, partly because they may ride in wider boots, but also as they often ride with a longer leg length. Dressage riders also generally have a longer, straighter leg position and tend to place more weight into the balls of the feet. The show jumper or cross country enthusiast sits further back in the saddle with shorter stirrups, as the ankle is an ‘anchor’, with a more ‘closed’ angle than you’d see in flatwork. Let’s take a look at the various innovations in technology that we have seen in recent years:

FEATURE Product picks World Wide Tack prides ourselves on offering the most technologicallyadvanced products and equine innovations on the market, including some of the best stirrups around. Our favourites are the Royal Rider range of stirrups. Royal Rider stirrups are manufactured in Italy using the highest quality materials, they offer lightweight stirrups with a wider foot bed, giving riders improved balance and control in the saddle. They’re composed of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer with a stainless steel ‘cheese-grater style’ tread, for optimum grip. The five top sellers are the advanced Royal Rider Offset Stirrups, the design of which ensures the stirrup leather hangs straight; the super lightweight Evo 80 Lightweight Stirrups, which also hang straight but are made from polymer; the Jump 25 Evo Action Stirrups, which have progressive springs at the top for shock absorption; the exceptionally lightweight Carbon Fibre Sports Stirrups, which also offer maximum shock absorption; and Carbon Fibre Sports Flex stirrups, which boast integrated cushioning in the body of the stirrup, allowing a structural level of flexibility and elasticity. To find out more about the Royal Rider Stirrup range visit www.worldwidetack.com

Evo 80 Lightweight Stirrups are made from Polymer

The Jump 25 Evo Action Stirrups have progressive springs at the top for shock absorption

The Carbon Fibre Sports Stirrups are composed from reinforced polymer used in the aerospace industry

Flexibility stirrups

Flexibility stirrups, known as ‘flexi stirrups’, offer greater control, and help riders to improve their position by allowing more weight into the heels. The flexibility provided also reduces pressure on the rider’s joints from the hip to the ankles, and softens the impact on the rider’s cartilage and ligaments. This in turn allows the rider to sit in a more still and balanced position, which is obviously better for the horse.

Off-set stirrups

The off-set stirrup design ensures the stirrup leather hangs straight, offering complete foot stability and improved lower leg position when riding. It aims to improve foot security while riding and intends to offer a quicker, safer release from the stirrup, should a fall occur.

Lightweight stirrups

For riders that jump, particularly those that undertake show jumping, lightweight stirrups are becoming more fashionable, allowing jumpers to move with ease and flexibility in the saddle and offering maximum comfort whilst doing so. Unlike in dressage where you want a still leg, the lightweight, often plastic stirrups as opposed to traditional iron - offer the advantage of using your body positioning for that millisecond-time-advantage, when it matters most! Adding Sparkle

Ride and shine “This summer, we are seeing more and more riders looking to give their own competition outfits that individual touch: From contemporary jacket designs in technical fabrics through to the trend towards safety hats and the opportunity for designer bespoke headwear, it seems top riders want to set trends, not follow them. The days of traditional tailoring in the dressage arena are certainly changing. Over the past 12 months, we have seen a real shift, with designs incorporating more technical fabrics, especially those with easy care labels – making life with horses just that bit easier. Riders are also changing their attitudes towards their shirts and whilst we still offer plain white competition shirts, we have also searched extensively to offer something more unusual. Many riders love our collection of striped shirts or those with crystal buttons, because as temperatures rise, you want to look as good on the horse as you do walking around the show ground.

Riders are also really embracing safety hats, choosing to wear the new style safety helmets even at PSG. With so much variety you can choose bling or plain, with a wide range in between. Our gorgeous delicate pearl and crystal bun nets, crystal embellished belts, stunning semi-precious stone stock-pins and limited edition vintage stocks are the perfect way to add sparkle to an outfit. Crystal Hair Net

We stock two great brands of boots, Petrie and Konigs. Some styles of the Petrie boots are narrower at the ankle, making them ideal for those who find dressage boots uncomfortable, where the leather creases. Something unique to Petrie is that they offer a complete patent finish, from toe through to shaft, which really does add a glamorous finish to the rider’s attire. When it comes to your underwear, our range of Knix seamless knickers are proving really popular, they have moisture wicking properties, with an antimicrobial cotton section. They also eliminate the dreaded VPL, so are perfect for underneath those white competition breeches this summer.

The perfect clothes horse Not only are riders becoming more and more style conscious they are looking to style their horses to ensure they capture the latest trends too. We are still selling lots of Swarovski crystal embellished rider and horse wear: from bling bandages for the warm-up, through to ‘bling’ browbands. We have some fantastic styles in stock including these Otto Schumacher crystal versions – beautiful and bling. Saddlecloths have also been Crystal Rocks given a makeover with many Browband featuring sparkle or detail, and the move towards more flashy turnout means that much more attention to detail is being spent on ‘hair and make-up’ from bespoke quarter markers through to designer plait styles.”

Our personal shopping service offers you the opportunity for a free style makeover online and all you need to do is drop an email to personalshopper@dressagedeluxe.co.uk Include a brief outline of what you are struggling to find, your body measurements and full length photograph of yourself dressed in fairly body hugging clothing and I will help you find the perfect jacket or breeches to suit your shape and build. Show Ring Preparation

Wahl share their top tips on producing a winning shine this season in the show ring… ➤ Give your horse a home massage. Before bathing or grooming spend some time with a rubber curry comb to loosen dirt that has settled deep within the coat. Not only will this clean the coat, but it also gives your horse a well-earned scratch and stimulates circulation. This is particularly enjoyable for your horse if they are feeling itchy from the heat, dust and dry summer weather. Once you have used the rubber curry comb in circular motions across the body you can either brush away the grime or give your horse a refreshing bath to leave a shiny, healthy looking coat and a comfortable equine. ➤ Detangle carefully! Manes and tails are fragile and if brushed excessively, using the wrong tools, can break and become thin. The secret to retaining a full and glossy tail is to spray a silicone-free detangler on the hair, such as Wahl’s Easy Groom Detangler, leave for a few moments and then slowly untangle knots with a suitable brush designed for manes and tails. Using a product that is silicone free means you won’t be left with a slippery or sticky finish.

➤ Bath smart. When bathing your horse or pony choose an equine specific shampoo in order to protect your equine’s skin. Horses have notoriously sensitive skin, which can be susceptible to irritation so using a shampoo, which is specifically designed for equines, reduces the risk of a regular shampoo stripping away natural oils and causing hair shaft damage. Choose a shampoo that suits your horses colouring to enhance the natural pigment in their coat such as Wahl’s Copper Tones or Diamond White. ➤ It’s all in the detail. Use a hand held trimmer, such as the Wahl Adelar, to neaten up the edges and finish the look. Think about using different blade lengths, with or without spacers, depending on the area you are tidying up. For example you will not want as close a finish down the legs as you may do down the jawline. Add finishing touches such as hoof oil just before you go in the ring for a top to toe immaculate look! t is great to see the Amlin plus Eventers’ Challenge returning to Hickstead. The competition will see invited event riders jumping around a course of cross country style fences and show jumps, with the goal being to jump a clear round as quickly as possible. The Localrider stand is set half way down the open side of the International Arena (stand 31A) and makes a wonderful place to view all of the main ring action. There will be the normal mix of competitions, giveaways and goodies on sale. We shall also have some good subscription offers available, so why not call in say hello and maybe leave the stand with a few prizes too! And remember to use your free entry tickets (see opposite). As one of the biggest outdoor shows in the country, the Longines Royal International Horse Show sees the elite of many equestrian disciplines compete side by side: it has everything from the thrills and spills of international show jumping to the elegance and glamour of champion showing horses and ponies, to the exhilarating buzz of the country’s best scurry ponies to event riders galloping across-country. Friday’s feature class is the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, where teams of four riders will be competing to qualify for the series final in Barcelona. It is the only chance British fans will have to see their team compete on home soil. Saturday’s Templant Events Queen Elizabeth II Cup is one of the most coveted titles in the national show jumping circuit, while Sunday’s finale is the Longines King George V Gold Cup, one of the oldest and most prestigious classes in the world. Ladies’ day is held on the Saturday of the Longines Royal International Horse Show, held in aid of the Mark Davies Injured Riders’ Fund. Show visitors are encouraged to dress to impress, with a host of prizes on offer to the most elegantly attired ladies. Last year Beezie Madden was the first lady to win the Longines King George V Gold Cup, seen here being presented with her prize by Katrina Jones, Brand Director for Longines. The importance of Blood Testing Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (Stud Med) MRCVS of Arundel Equine Hospital

A

n important tool in the management of performance in sport horses is the laboratory. A simple blood test can give an indication as to the well being of the horse prior to competition. As we know there are occasions when we just feel a little under the weather, possibly we have no other clinical symptoms associated with this feeling such as a runny nose or a cough, but it can go on for several days and we just don’t feel on top of our game. Many horses are the same, however they can’t tell us how they feel, there are no clinical symptoms to give us an indication that there is a problem; an astute rider may feel that the horse is a little flat. Obviously in this state the horse is not going to perform to the best of its ability. The most common cause of such a situation is one of the respiratory viruses, as it is in people.

horse with a virus or it may be low in a horse with a severe acute bacterial infection, such as peritonitis. The band or immature white cell count will be elevated in severe infection in response to the demand for infection fighting cells. More often than not the total white cell count is within normal limits, but the ratios of the types of white cells may be reversed when there is a low grade subclinical infection such as a virus present. The proportion of neutrophils should be roughly 60% and the proportion of lymphocytes should be 35-40%, a change in this ratio is known as a reverse differential and is typical of viral challenges. Also with a virus there may be an increased presence of monocytes. Raised eosinophils may indicate parasitism such as intestinal worms.

Monitoring the performance horse

Also as part of our profile we look at the fibrinogen level in the blood. Fibrinogen is a protein that becomes elevated in the presence of infection, it rises relatively slowly and returns to normal relatively slowly also. It is useful to give an indication that there has been a problem that possibly has passed. Serum amyloid A, SAA, is an acute phase protein that comes up in the blood quickly in response to infection and falls quickly once infection has been brought under control. This is very useful as it tells you what is happening to the horse now. Often the white cell parameters may not have changed yet in response to infection, but the SAA will have started to rise. Conversely after infection has passed the white cell parameters may still look a little abnormal and the fibrinogen can still be elevated, but the SAA is normal, indicating the horse is going the right way. Albumin and globulins are also evaluated as part of our profile. The globulins are the antibodies present in the blood stream, they will rise in response to infection. Albumin is important as it assists in maintaining the water level in the blood stream, it falls due to poor nutrition or due to conditions such as diarrhoea causing protein loss in the bowel.

For some owners and trainers of performance sport horses or racehorses at the start of the season we will collect a couple of blood samples from the horse a few weeks apart and try to work out what the normal parameters are in the blood for that horse. It may be the horse is not right at the time of the initial test, which is why we usually do more than one test. Once we have an idea what is normal for the horse we can routinely test prior to an important competition or when the rider or trainer is not happy with the horse, this allows a decision to be made as to whether the horse is in top form for competition.

The parameters that are looked at in the blood sample are broken down into two groups, the haematology and the biochemistry. The Vital organs haematology profile The biochemistry profile part of the blood sample really looks at the looks at the red and enzymes present in the blood associated with the internal organs white cell levels in the blood. The red cell content of the blood is such as the liver and kidneys. These are important to monitor as important as this gives an indication of the ability of the blood to inflammation of these vital organs can make the horse feel unwell carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles where it is needed for exertion. However, liver problems can be quite common for Different types of horse have a different expected level of red cells, example horses being fed hay or haylage that is contaminated with for example thoroughbreds will have a higher red cell count than ragwort or micotoxins can suffer from liver inflammation. A high red cell count can indicate that the horse is Evaluation of the muscle enzymes CK and AST is also important a little dehydrated and not drinking enough for some reason, and as they give an indication of the muscle function. Some horses as we all know not drinking enough can make you feel rough. Care are prone to tying-up and may have higher muscle enzymes than has to be taken when interpreting red cell parameters, as a horse that is not relaxed at the time of sampling can have a higher red cell normal. Are you sitting comfortably?

Lesley Peyton Gilbert competing Woodcroft Garuda K

Rider comfort is a very important part of the saddle fitting equation – however it is often overlooked – specifically the ‘taboo’ subject of comfort in the seat. First Thought Equine, the creators of WOW and Classique Saddles, have come up with a solution as David Kempsell explains… A painful problem…

It is a well known fact that riders have technically a three point seat with female riders sitting on their seat bones and using the pubic arch as a third point of reference, while male riders use the coccyx as the balance point reference. Hence why some saddle’s seats are said to be more suitable for a male or female rider. Many riders, women in particularly, suffer the problem of rubbing to the point of excessive soreness, especially in deep-seated dressage saddles, however it is a taboo subject. The coccyx is made up of three loosely fused bones and is designed to be weight bearing when sitting. Whilst many people think this is a problem mainly for men it is also a fact that women are five times more likely to suffer from coccydynia than men due to the shape of their pelvis and the after effect of childbirth.

Equitana with Extra Deep Anatomique Seat

A solution

A channel has been offered for many years by WOW saddles, but the latest enhancements to improve rider comfort and pressure relief are a big step forward. Furthermore the channel can be used under and in front of the rider‘s seat or further back to offer coccyx relief for those riders whom find sitting on these bones creates pain due to injury or other conditions. The Anatomique seat has been heralded as “life changing” by riders using it. In the Anatomique seat, a channel is created that is virtually invisible to the eye, to offer a dramatically different surface to sit on, allowing for pressure relief and enhanced comfort levels.

FEED NEWS

g n i d e e F r e m Sum NAF EnerG

As performance increases, so too does the requirement for specific nutrients. Horses lose minerals such as iron during exercise and this can result in lethargy and a reduction in performance. EnerG Liquid is rich not only in iron, but also in copper and zinc, both of which are required by the horse to maximise the benefits of supplementary iron, which therefore optimises energy metabolism. EnerG Liquid is recommended for competing, hard working or lethargic horses and ponies to really help maximise their energy metabolism. EnerG shot is designed for use as and when needed, so is ideal for competition or training. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

KM Elite Liquid Garlic KM Elite Liquid Garlic is perfectly blended for the optimum health, appearance and well-being of your horse. ✔ Super concentrated, it is 10 times more effective at repelling flies and biting insects than other garlic products. ✔ Stimulates the appetite, supports respiratory health, maintains healthy blood pressure, contains antioxidants and assists the immune system. ✔ One litre of KM Elite Liquid Garlic is equal to over 3kg of garlic granules. ✔ 100% natural. ✔ As a liquid, it offers maximum bio-availability, which means it is absorbed more easily into the bloodstream and then moves quickly throughout the body to benefit to your horse.

Speedi-Beet for Rapid Rehydration Speedi-Beet from British Horse Feeds is a unique beet pulp feed soaked and ready to use in under ten minutes. It is extremely palatable, high in fibre and unmolassed, making it 95% sugar free. The non-heating feed provides rapid rehydration for performance horses, whilst optimising energy release rate. This is due to the soluble fibre in Speedi-Beet, which has a high water holding capacity, increasing the amount of fluid in the horse’s hindgut. This reservoir can then be drawn upon during prolonged exercise to help replace water lost through sweating. Adding small amounts of Speedi-Beet to water may also encourage difficult horses to drink during events. www.britishhorsefeeds.com

Feeding the Veteran NAF In The Pink Senior In The Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay active and feeling forever young. In The Pink Senior helps balance the diet and the digestive system, which enables the horse to maximise the value of his feed intake. It provides pre and probiotics for optimum support of the gut, and supplies all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. In The Pink Senior also supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system, as well as providing nutrients to support joint health. Recommended for older horses, whether the signs of age are obvious or not. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

W

ith summer approaching and spring grass already through, many horses will be enjoying this tasty forage source that they haven’t seen much of over the winter months. However, for horses stabled part of the time either to restrict the amount of grazing time or those competing, feeding Haygain steamed hay is still an important part of the diet. Haygain are manufacturers of scientifically proven hay steamers, which eliminate respirable dust particles and bacteria from forage. This revolutionary concept means that horses can be fed clean hay/haylage which is highly palatable.

Steaming Hay through the Summer Months

Reduce respiratory problems

Regardless of whether you are feeding ‘good’ hay or haylage, there will still be some mould, bacteria and fungal spores (often referred to as ‘dust’) present in it, which can cause respiratory problems. Long fibre (hay or haylage) is such a large, important component of the horse’s diet and as a result the horse spends much of its time with its nose in the forage so the hygienic quality is crucial. Treating the forage with Haygain is an effective way to dramatically reduce the risk of respiratory problems associated with forage allergies and other respiratory problems. The alternative is soaking hay, which is laborious, reduces the nutritional value of the hay and the post-soak water is classed as an environmental pollutant so should not be put down storm drains. Hannah Biggs, International Dressage Rider, who uses Haygain steamers on her yard said: “I have complete peace of mind that my competition horses are getting the full nutritional value of their hay with no detrimental respiratory problems.” Indeed there are a whole host of professional riders who endorse the use of Haygain, including William Fox-Pitt, Tim Stockdale and Laura Tomlinson, they too have seen the huge health benefits and cost savings.

Happy customer

It’s not just professional riders who have seen the benefits, leisure rider Paulette Barker, from Devon has been thrilled with her HAYGAIN steamer, saying: “I’ve had my HG600 for three years now and it has cut the waste down by two thirds. It’s paid for itself within the first year.” The HAYGAIN hay steamer kills the respirable dust by thoroughly steaming from the centre outwards at 100 degrees Celsius. This is hugely beneficial to the health of the horse as it is this ‘dust’ that is inhaled deep into the lungs and challenges the respiratory system. Whilst some horses don’t show any clinical symptoms, in fact, 80% of horse’s stabled part of the time, have some airway inflammation without showing any symptoms. Research has shown that stabled horses may lose 30% of their maximum lung capacity, which will have detrimental effects on their health and performance. The Haygain system is very straightforward to use and many riders comment on how easy and time saving it is. The forage is simply placed into the insulated, double skinned chest and pushed firmly down onto spiked manifolds. It takes 50-60 minutes to steam and can be fed straight away. Another advantage is the freshly steamed hay has an appealing sweet smell so is ideal for encouraging fussy eaters. The HAYGAIN hay steamer is available in four different sized models, ranging from the HG1000 which is suitable for feeding four horses, down to the HG-GO which can accommodate a large hay net and is ideal to take to competitions. So with the competition season in full swing, make the Haygainsteamer an essential part of your kit.

father figure

The behind the scenes hero… David Foster

Any successful equestrian will tell you that the key to success is a great back up team, be it a trainer, sponsor or family member there are just some people we cannot be without. In this continuing series we meet ‘the dads’, so important and so supportive, but very rarely known. Four-year-old Sam Foster has a Shetland named Smurf and a best buddy called Billy, who also has a Shetland named Pancake. His father, David, is a famer, who has a fair few tractors (awesome) and also makes a lot of hay!

The boys love fancy dress competitions

Name: David Foster Home-town: Tonbridge Occupation: Farmer

David Foster

Off-spring: Sam, aged four

Sam on Smurf with Billy and Pancake

How did you become involved with horses? Horses have always been part of the farm. My sister, Jane, used to have ponies and compete in mounted games, she introduced me to my wife, Ronnie, who used to be on the same team. Do you ride yourself? Not if I can help it! I can go from A to B and maybe round up some sheep. I’m happiest when it comes to horses if they stay in the right field and don’t go lame.

All boys like to splash around in the water

Favourite horse or pony and why? The one that stays in the right field. What area of the sport are you involved with? When Ronnie and Jane were out competing it was mounted games mainly, and Ronnie also showed native ponies for Kathleen James. Sam is a little bit young to be into anything like that, but he does pretty well at fancy dress with his cousin Billy. I suppose we can also claim to be involved in eventing now as Rose Carnegie’s (June Localrider cover star), who rode round Badminton 4* for the first time in 2015 is moving into the top yard, but that’s by proxy, really Rose does all the hard work. How do you support your family with their sport? I make a lot of hay! I will also drive them to events and mend fences.

Sir Sam

Sam, Smurf and Ronnie Foster

What’s the best thing about competing? It’s the farm’s busiest time of the year in the summer so I don’t get out and about as much as I’d like. Although I do like an ice cream when I do. What’s the worst thing about competing? That there’s never enough hours in the day.

Ronnie Foster showing Highland Jolie for Kathleen James

What was your proudest moment when watching your child compete? Have you seen those fancy dress costumes? Favourite show ground snack? Ice Cream! Favourite show ground and why? Is it bad to say my own fields? Oh Good, Judd Wood Farm. What do your friends think about what you and your family do? We live in the countryside, it’s a way of life. For more information on Judd Wood Farm please visit www.juddwoodfarm.co.uk
