An article printed in Horse & Hound last year regarding Veterinary research in the Netherlands stated, that a study on a Chondroitin & Glucosamine supplement when fed to horses was no more effective than Placebo, in other words it did not work! CORTAFLEX® was subjected to a rigorous double blind study at Michigan State University Veterinary Medicine Research Dept, and it was shown to improve joint mobility. *For results of the study see website www.jointsupplementresearch.com Since the double blind study has been carried out, CORTAFLEX® has been reformulated with the addition of Hyaluronic acid, ASU and now Super Fenn. *CORTAFLEX® for people is a special formulation manufactured in a pharmaceutical plant.

always look forward to Badminton, firstly because it is such a wonderful event, and since the addition of the Grassroots Championship we have so many locals competing there, but secondly because for me it marks the start of the outdoor season. I know that once Badminton is over there is a show to be found pretty much every day, until everything moves back Pippa Funnell inside for the Horse of the Year Show in October. and Redesigned This year’s Badminton was great to watch and I was particularly proud to see Badminton first-timers Rose Carnegie (this month’s cover star) and Nana Dalton complete and I look forward to seeing more of them in the future. There wasn’t space for this wonderful picture of Pippa Funnell and Redesigned on the Badminton report on page 13 so I decided to squeeze it in here. Pippa’s wonderful faith in the stunning Redesigned was rewarded and she finished best of the locals in twelfth place. There were some amazing stories from the Grassroots Championships page 17 too. 12-year-old Morgann Bloquet, the youngest rider in the competition finished fourth in the BE90 Championship and Kate Beier finished tenth. Just out of the placings in the BE100 Championship, Louise Weir collected the ‘Keep Kicking On’ trophy for the highest placed rider over 40 years of age. All these riders started somewhere and in contrast we have a wonderful spread of pictures from the Crawley & Horsham Hunt South ). Equally determined riders, but not quite such big jumps. Pony Club Hunter Trial (see page 55). I know many of you enjoy entering our competitions and there are some fantastic prizes this month including Tickets to Brighton Races (see page 6), a copy of Roy Gill’s ‘From Epsom to Tralee’ (see page 7), as well as lots more goodies on page 31. This month we also have two free tickets for every reader to the Hickstead Derby Meeting. Each ticket allows two people entry on either Thursday 25th or Friday 26th June. See page 47 to find out more. Plus look out next month when we have free entry tickets for the Royal International Horse Show. Swift Bedding sponsor Team Crisp Eventing Swift Horse Bedding Pellets has recently announced their sponsorship of Team Crisp for the 2015 season. Team Crisp is a family team comprising Tom and Sophie – both fantastically experienced competitors who have taken part in CC14* events at home and internationally. Having used Swift Bedding Pellets for the past six months Tom has nothing but praise for them commenting: “They are easy to handle, use and store (a 15kg of pellets is only a quarter of the size of a bag of woodchips). They are highly absorbent and eliminate odour brilliantly plus they are environmentally friendly. Along with all of this they work out at great value for money – we will definitely be using them from now on.” Barry Nutley from Swift Bedding commented: “It’s a great synergy for us. Team Crisp is a flourishing eventing team with a promising future, exactly the type of business that Swift Bedding wanted to partner and a team that is as ambitious for their future as we are for ours. Having used the pellets Team Crisp is confident that it provides the best bedding solution. We’re looking forward to working together through the rest of the 2015 season.” Left to right: Tom Crisp and Barry Nutley from Swift Bedding

Carl Hester honoured with Queen’s Award Carl Hester received the prestigious British Horse Society Queen’s Award for Equestrianism from Her Majesty The Queen at Royal Windsor Horse Show on Saturday 16th May.

Carl Hester receiving his award from Her Majesty The Queen

The Award, which is made on the recommendation of the Trustees of The British Horse Society, is ‘For Outstanding Services to Equestrianism’. As the most successful British dressage rider in history, Carl’s achievements speak for themselves. However, his contribution to the sport, and to equestrianism as a whole, goes far deeper than his many titles and medals. Carl is a wonderful ambassador for horse sport, bringing an enthusiasm and accessibility to dressage that has undoubtedly helped to widen its appeal. He continues to promote the very best standards of welfare, horse care and training and, above all else, helps an ever-increasing audience to appreciate the joy that horses bring. Quite simply, British Dressage would not have enjoyed the same level of success on the international stage without Carl’s expertise, knowledge and guidance. But most of all, it is his generous nature that the panel felt marked him out as an exceptional sportsman and a most deserving recipient of the Queen’s Award. On receiving his award, Carl said: “Working with horses is my life. It is an amazing privilege to receive this recognition for doing something I love… and to receive this award from The Queen is incredibly special.”

The Chairman of The British Horse Society, Claire Aldridge, accompanied Carl to the presentation. Commenting on the award she said: “We are delighted to be able to bestow this honour to Carl on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen. There could be no greater recipient for this award than Carl, who has dedicated so much of his life to his sport. Not only has he made his country so proud with his own achievements, but he has so generously put such passion into developing the success of others – all the time keeping the welfare of the horse at heart.” Jason Brautigam, Chief Executive of British Dressage, said that Carl was one of those individuals who transcended the sport. “Carl’s role within the sport goes far beyond being an ambassador and mentor. He has fostered a team spirit within the dressage community that hasn’t previously existed. Carl’s contribution has been immense – his commitment is selfless, as is his generosity of spirit. He is not just concerned with his personal results but about the long term development of the sport.”

Gatehouse HS1 Jockey Skull Gatehouse is reassuring customers that its HS1 Jockey Skull is suitable for use under equestrian sports rules beyond the end of the year. Helen Riley, Technical & Safety Manager for the brand, said: “Since the withdrawal of the European standard, EN1384, there has been some confusion concerning the HS1, which is tested to the American Snell E2001 standard. We can confirm that the various equestrian sports bodies are accepting Snell helmets for those riding under rules in 2016. The helmet also carries the CE Mark required to market and sell safety wear in the UK and Europe. The Snell label can be located under the padding inside the helmet.” Snell E2001 is the most demanding helmet standard currently in manufacture for equestrians and includes a test that simulates a rider falling into a fence rail or having a secondary hit by a horse’s hoof. Carbon fibre reinforcement on the lower edge of the HS1 helps strengthen and balance the helmet.

F

rom Epsom to Tralee – a journey round the racecourses of the British Isles, this wonderful book by Roy Gill is both inspiring and entertaining. Our editor said: “As soon as I started turning the pages I wanted to stop what I was doing and go racing. There are so many different and wonderful racecourses around the British Isles and I definitely need to see a few more of them.” In 1955, Reg Gill – milkman and part-time illegal bookie – took his 12-year-old son Roy to the Spring meeting at Epsom Downs Racecourse. It was a trip that started a life-long passion for racing. In the half-century since, Roy Gill has visited every racecourse in UK, Eire and Northern Ireland at least twice. Many courses have been closed down, some have moved their location: but every existing racecourse he visited is vividly recalled in this very personal and highly readable account. The book is beautifully illustrated with contemporary and archive photographs (many never previously published). Told with humour and passion, this entertaining and informative work is essential reading for all lovers of the Turf. WIN: We have two copies of From Epsom to Tralee to give away. For your chance to win turn to page 31 and complete the entry form.

Lungeing for enhanced performance Most horses are lunged during the breaking process, but this is often discontinued once they are ridden away. People often fail to realise the benefits of lungeing as part of the horse’s regular training. Correct lungeing with EquiAmi helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. By watching your horse on the lunge you learn lots about his movement and any weaker areas. Lungeing aims to encourage the horse to stretch over his back, engage his hind quarters while lifting his shoulders, working into a soft, accepting contact. The EquiAmi lunge aid encourages softness and stretching, whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. Dr. Hilary Bentley of EquiAmi says that EquiAmi doesn’t fix or restrain, but encourages engagement of the hindquarters, lightness of the forehand, acceptance and self-carriage. An independent study showed that, over a six week period, there was a significant increase in stride length and decrease in asymmetry in thoroughbred horses lunged twice a week in the EquiAmi lunge aid. These findings demonstrate that, like a gymnastic workout for athletes, regular lungeing can enhance the results of training and improve performance.

Brilliant boots Words by Lucy Nicholas of retailer The Saddlery Shop

M

When moving to barefoot, hoof boots with pads allow the horse to continue to work, while improving the hoof.

any people now manage their horses barefoot - the South east in general is a very ‘barefoot-friendly’ region, Hoof boots allow the hoof to work effectively, with some notable hoofcare increasing circulation professionals, and even some and boosting the barefoot-specific livery yards. digital cushion. Today, i’d like to talk about hoof boots. These are just one tool in the barefoot horse’s management tool kit. it’s important to clarify that hoof boots are not a substitute for a bad diet or a poor trim. even with the foundations of a good diet and exercise, a poor trim will leave the hoof in a weakened and unnatural shape.

Do I need boots?

People ask me, why do i need to use hoof boots at all? Well, in an ideal world, horses would not need to use hoof boots; but many factors affect hoof quality, and the reality for most horse owners wanting to keep their horse barefoot is that there will be compromises somewhere in the management of their horse. The most common problem is not being able to exercise the horse enough to fully condition the hooves. in order to condition a horse to be able to travel across a surface, you need to be able to consistently work him on that type of ground. a lot of horse owners are not able to work their horses for increasing amounts of time every day across a multitude of surfaces, gradually building up the hoof’s ability to cope with any surface. as hooves are reactionary, riding a few times a week will in a lot of cases never be enough to condition the hoof to be 100% on rough and stony ground. another problem is you may not have rough surfaces near you where you ride or train, but wish to attend and event further afield, where the ground conditions are rougher than your horse is conditioned to, or are unknown. in either case, boots will give you the solution to enable your horse to do whatever you want to do with him without concern.

Hooves are reactionary; riding minimally may never condition the hooves on rough ground. Boots can help.

Popular boots The Easyboot Transition. Is this the industry’s ultimate hoof boot? The technologically-advanced Transition fits many hoof shapes and sizes, including round, slightly longer than wide, and even slightly wider than long. It is the ideal hoofboot to provide shock absorption to hoof structures / limbs. The Easyboot Glove Back Country. This is a lightweight, breathable, form-fitting and durable boot for barefoot horses. It takes its design from two existing boots from American manufacturer Easycare – the Easyboot Glove, and the Easyboot Trail. The Back Country includes a ‘Comfort Cup’ gaiter, a section of strapping that provides stabilisation and a close fit to reduce rubbing.

Key points

The fixings on hoof boots are usually such that the boot is able to flex or move, or the fixing is able to flex and move with the horse’s hoof capsule as it expands and contracts, thus allowing the hoof to work naturally. Booted horses will usually land heel first almost immediately, even if they did not in a metal shoe, immediately allowing the hoof to work more effectively, increasing circulation and building up the digital cushion more rapidly. When moving from shod to barefoot, boots with the correct ‘comfort pads’ will allow the horse to continue to work to the same level in most cases as they were when shod, whilst exercising and improving the hoof.

When selecting hoof boots

• Measure the weight-bearing length and width of the foot at the widest point. • if a reputable trimmer is not fitting the boot, contact a knowledgeable supplier with your measurements to ascertain which boot model would be suitable. • if your horse needs boots constantly, his dietary requirements may need to be addressed. june 2015 Localrider 29

A girthy issue

Have you ever thought about how your horse’s girth could affect his comfort and way of going? It may seem like a simple task, but with so many girth options now on the market, we talk to David Kempsell from WOW Saddles to address some of the pressing questions…

A

poorly designed or ill-fitting girth can cause problems such as girth sores or galls, pinching, rubbing and hair loss – all of which will result in pain, discomfort and potential long-term girthing issues. In addition, in recent years equine scientists have been focusing on the impact the girth can have on the overall comfort of the horse dynamically (when moving), assessing whether certain designs of girth constrict or can further compliment equine movement and thus increase stride length, power and willingness to work.

A split girth may suit your horse The girth should be tight enough to hold your saddle in place, but not so tight that it restricts the horse’s breathing or movement. Remember a girth needs to be only tight enough to provide a secure platform for riding. Cranking the girth up an extra hole just because you have the muscle power is unnecessary and can damage the horse’s pectoral muscles. Likewise if it’s too loose, the girth is liable to rub or pinch.

There is no single girth that works for every horse!

The way a girth is cut and the material it is made from can, alongside impacting on health and wellbeing, have a significant effect on your horse’s movement. The pectoral muscles, which lie directly under where a girth is placed, can be impacted directly by a poorly fitting girth. If the posterior pectoral muscle is tight the musculature cannot release the leg forward easily, so forward motion is compromised. When the pectoral muscles are not working well, surrounding muscles of the forelimb apparatus are likely to also be disrupted with problems potentially impacting on the cervical (neck) and thoracic (trunk) portions of the rhomboid, serratus and trapezius muscles.

The right girth is vital

Spending hours debating which saddle to purchase is commonplace, however the same cannot be said for girthing. However, selecting an incorrect girth can result in a host of physical and physiological issues. The basic principles of girthing are… • Where possible the pressure exerted from a girth over the horse’s back must be spread over as much of the tree as possible. • Where a girth groove is forward the girthing must be moved forward to keep the saddle back. • Where a girth groove is back from the norm the girthing has to be moved backward to keep the saddle forward.

37-wow2-lrjune15.indd 2

Curved girths may dig in at the back on some horses and cause discomfort

WOW saddle girth straps distribute pressure widely

What to look for?

What you should be looking for is not just being able to get your fingers under the girth (once done up to riding tightness) at the sternum but most importantly right the way across the whole of the girth’s width. The area you should be most concerned with is the tissue either side of the sternum not getting squeezed or pinched. Insurance, Not Just a Luxury, a Necessity

Words by Nicolina Mackenzie, Marketing Manager for SEIB

T

he laws have changed regarding liability claims following the Jackson Reforms in 2013. The perceived easy option of ’no win no fee’ is now not really available. However, this is no reason to be complacent about insurance, as according to the Department of Work and Pensions, Public Liability claims have remained static and there has been a 16% increase in Employer’s Liability claims. Following the reforms, the general consensus of opinion is that we are likely to see a reduction in more complex claims, as solicitors will focus on more straight forward incidents, as they are more likely to be successful with their actions. Under the new regime, if a claimant is successful, they are able to recover their costs from the defendant in accordance with the scales of costs detailed within the new rules. However, if the defendant is successful they will be unable to recover their costs from the claimant.

Implications for horse owners

This means that if you let your friend ride your horse and they fall off and then sue, saying that your horse was dangerous, even if you can prove it wasn’t and the courts agree with you, you will not be able to recover any of your defence costs legally from the unseated rider. For these reasons, it is important to have appropriate insurance that gives access to legal experts, who can navigate the ever changing legislative landscape. Remember, good horse insurance is not a fashion accessory. It is there to protect you and yours from the demands of modern, everyday life and it is crucial that before agreeing to a policy you do the appropriate research and ask the right questions.

Look at the quality of cover provided

In your own interests, compare the quality of cover and not just the price before you choose a policy. The quickest and easiest way to get the right cover is to find an independent broker well versed in equine insurance and let the company do the work for you. Brokers with equestrian expertise will know the right questions to ask and will choose your insurer with care. SEIB only recommend using UK based insurers, so that clients are protected by the FCA should the insurance company fail. Before taking out a policy ask who will handle any claims, it is much easier to deal direct with an in-house claims team than try to keep in touch with a third party. Especially for horse and pony veterinary fee claims which can continue over a protracted

period of time and are often very stressful because of the animal involved.

Before You Start

Do you want cover for loss of use of your horse, for example following an accident and do you need to insure your tack, in case it is stolen? Some people find it repugnant, but do you want to insure against disposal costs if your horse has to be put down or dies? Does anyone else ride your horse for you? Do you want cover for injuries to yourself or anyone else? How do you want to pay your premiums? These are all important and very relevant questions. It is all very well looking for a quote on-line, but nothing beats picking up the phone and talking to an expert, however, find out if you are talking to an insurance company, a broker or an agent. An insurance company can only offer insurance underwritten by themselves, a broker will be placing business with a number of insurance companies, and in the main an agent will be representing just one company and perhaps one you have already spoken to.

Horse and Pony Insurance

Important questions to ask are: is full cover available from the payment of the first premium or is there is a delay (often two weeks)? Is a veterinary certificate or are x-rays required? What is the age limit for the horse, and what happens when it reaches or passes that age?

Personal Liability

This cover is very important, ensure protection is in place if someone else rides your horse or if you pay for it to be exercised. Membership of some disciplines such as British Showjumping or organisations such as World Horse Welfare, the British Horse Society or Arab Horse Society often includes liability cover within their memberships. Terms, conditions and territorial limits will apply and the cover is unlikely to offer protection for business use.

Veterinary Fee Cover

In this day and age it is imperative to have good insurance, no one wants to make the heartbreaking decision to put a horse or pony to sleep because treatment is too expensive, veterinary charges soon mount up. There are ways to reduce costs, you could choose to limit the cover by only insuring for external, accidental injury which will significantly reduce premiums but the horse will not be covered for colic or other illness and disease. Another option is to increase the amount of excess paid following a claim which can significantly reduce the premium.

Be honest about any pre-existing conditions, it is important to understand what cover is in place. If something comes up during a claim that the insurer didn’t know about it may not be paid.

Loss of Use

This can have its pitfalls. Basically, it means that if, for example, you insure an event horse and it has an injury so that it cannot jump, you may have the basis for a claim. The insurer will not pay out for loss of use until all veterinary treatment options have been explored and the horse would need to be freeze marked before payment would be made. Remember, Loss of Use can become more expensive as the horse ages so keep an eye on the premiums for this cover.

Tack

If the horse policy covers tack, check if it is insured while at the yard and if it is covered in an unlocked tack room. Most policies will have security requirements, some will demand that all tack must be kept in a locked room and the insurer may stipulate what locks are required. There will be security requirements and you will have to comply with the terms of the policy for a tack theft claim to be successful. It is worth checking if the tack and saddlery is covered in a horsebox or car at a horse show. You may be covered under a household policy and your broker should be able to advise you.

Personal Accident

This cover is often optional but could turn out to be very valuable following an accident. Some policies pay a lump sum, others will contribute towards medical and dental treatment. Personal Accident cover is included within the membership of some equestrian organisations and disciplines. Personal Accident policies are available that will pay a proportion of your weekly wage should you not be able to work due to a riding injury. This is called ‘temporary disablement’ and could be a valuable option should you have a nasty fall.

Complications with Castration Words by Ed Lyall Vet Med Cert EM (Stud Med) MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

C

astration is a very commonly performed procedure, that we all take for granted is simple and straight forward, however it is not without risks. Some horses under the age of four are castrated standing, they are given a sedative, painkillers and antibiotics before starting the procedure. Local anaesthetic is then injected into the testicle and the scrotal skin is incised to reveal the tunic of the testicle and the testicle within it. The tunic is actually the lining of the abdomen that has been pushed down through the inguinal canal as the testicle descends into the scrotum. The tunic is incised and the testicle is exposed, the blood vessels are then separated from the vas deferens and the nerves supplying the testicle. The vet will clamp the blood vessels with a bowel clamp and then apply an emasculator, which cuts the blood vessels and crushes the tissues closest to the abdomen. It is the clamping and crushing that prevents any bleeding from the testicular blood vessels. The vet will then leave the bowel clamps on overnight and remove them the next day, so that there is little chance of any severe haemorrhage. The testicle is then removed by emasculating as much of the tunic as possible, the vas deferens and the nerve supply to the testicle. The tunic and the scrotal wounds are then left open to drain. This image shows a horse being castrated while standing

Risk of infection

Horse with prolapsed Infection of the castration wounds is omentum after possible, however I prescribe broad castration spectrum antibiotics at the time of castration. Swelling of the scrotum and sheath is not uncommon, this in itself is painful, the horse then does not want to move and stands still, exacerbating the swelling. As such for the first five days after castration I prescribe pain killers and suggest as much exercise as possible. One of the biggest causes of swelling several days after castration is the development of a seroma or haematoma, this happens because the castration wounds have healed up too soon and the fluid that would normally drip from the tunic and abdomen gets trapped in the scrotum. As discussed previously blood and serum is very caustic and causes swelling of the soft tissues, ideally as soon as swelling is noted at the site of castration veterinary intervention should be sought, as it is often a case of simply opening up the castration wounds again under a little sedation. If left longer the sheath and scrotum can swell massively and it is much harder to deal with as pain killers, antibiotics and sometimes steroids are required to get the swelling under control. It is normal for the sheath to swell a little after castration as this is the most dependent area and the swelling falls from the castration site. Another unusual swelling that can occur in the scrotum, several months after castration, is due to the development of a hydrocele, which is where a significant amount of the tunic has been left in the scrotum, the edges of which heal together and form a pouch that peritoneal fluid can collect in. The amount of fluid in the hydrocele varies hence the size of the swelling varies. In most instances no action is taken, but sometimes people want this surgically corrected.

Meg is currently enrolled in Boot Camp with Laura!

Laura Powell writes...

Wow what a Badminton! I still cannot stop thinking about it. I love how Pippa and Bettina rode with true grit and determination when maybe some had said they’d lost ‘it’ a few years ago. Fox-Pitt never really seems to do much wrong and is always the nice guy, but I can’t help rooting for Andrew Nicholson. He always says it how it is and I can imagine him working every hour to make sure it happens, plus he has natural talent and a cool attitude. I just couldn’t believe it when he was set up for the win and he lost ‘it’ in the show jumping. However, it was refreshing as it showed me even the very best can make a stupid inexcusable mistake under pressure. The other revelation was that Ben Hobday’s ride was half Cylesdale - unbelievable at this level and a true credit to him for conditioning the horse. I had numerous texts about this while he was going cross-country as my five-year-old Whoopi is also half cart horse (Shire).

Alf feels amazing

I’ve been really busy and not really achieved an awful lot recently. Alf has finally beaten his virus and is back on the path to fitness. He had a trip out to Pyecombe British Showjumping, where he produced a lovely double clear and felt amazing. Sadly Nessa has been on the back burner due to an inflamed, but not damaged check ligament. It is very frustrating as she consequently missed her run at Munstead, which she was just ready for. She has spent the last three weeks walking round the roads and has only just started school work again.

A mind of her own

And then there is Meg! I was asked to ride Meg a couple of months ago whilst her owner was off, with the view to possibly eventing her. All was going well and we headed to Munstead Unaffiliated to compete in the BE80 class. I knew she was an opinionated mare, who at seven-years-old had been allowed to have a little bit too much of an opinion, but I felt I had really clicked with her. She went exceptionally well in the dressage and despite being marked harshly I was pleased. The show jumping seemed fairly easy and I thought we may have a problem in the cross-country warm-up, but no that was all fine.

We ground to a halt

So we set out on the course full of confidence jumped fence one with a little look and then grinded to a halt! After much kicking and flapping I found the go button and she jumped the rest of course clear. This is not something I am used to. So Meg has now come to me for boot camp! I’ve already seen a massive transformation in just four days. Yes there has been a few very stroppy brat attacks - particularly when being bathed, but I’m really excited about her. She also went to Pyecombe and jumped her first British Showjumping course exceptionally well. Now the above three (Alf, Nessa & Meg) head to one of my favourite events - Mattingley!

such as riding, I would recommend these. For me the best part is the prescription Inzert, which can be quickly added. I was impressed with the efficient turnaround. Having emailed my prescription the glasses and insert, which is easy to click into place, arrived just over a week later, in a beautiful presentation box, with lots of cleaning cloths.

This is an extremely thin and lightweight fleece, yet it provides a warm layer and protection against wind chill on cooler days. I particularly like the full length zip, which means it can be quickly taken off or worn with the zip open.

Idolo Tether Tie

Gubbins Bag

LR Comment: If you need a pair of sunglasses, suitable for sporting activities,

The Idolo Tether Tie is a unique knotless safety release system and a safe replacement to baler twine. Designed by Roy French, the Tether Tie is made in Axminster, Devon from high grade industrial nylon. It is based on pressure and release with a choice of two pressures, achieved by simply turning the Tether Tie over. If your horse or pony should panic or spook the Tether Tie allows the rope to pass over/under the friction bar, still holding pressure but eliminating the panic your horse would otherwise experience. Using the Idolo Tether Tie could not be simpler, simply make a loop, thread through the tether tie, loop over the top, clip to a tie ring or fixed point. It is easy to use and suitable to use with most lead ropes. RRP: £12.95 www.idolotethertie.com LR Comment: The Tether Tie needs to be fixed by a hook or carabiner to a fixed point, but after that all you need do is wrap the rope around it. It is great for working with young horses, or those which are constantly pulling back. However, from a safety point of view, it comes into its own. Even the best horses sometimes pull back and if they do and you are using baler twine, how long does it take to get the rope undone. Have a look at the video online to see how quick and simple the Tether Tie is to use. Roy said a lot of his sales come from people who have seen his product, then have an incident and realise what a benefit it would have been to have been using a Tether Tie at that time.

Perfect for grooming kits, garden tools in fact any kind of ‘gubbins’. Heather Jobbins made the original version of the Gubbins Bag for her husband to take up the mast of his boat and since then people have asked her to make then a ‘Gubbins’ Bag for many different purposes. The bag is 10” high and 8” wide, made from tough waterproof canvas, it has three exterior pockets and adjustable webbing strap. RRP: £18.00 For more information contact Heather on 01425 616737 or 07778 103335 Email: twiggyj@hotmail.co.uk LR Comment: The Gubbins Bag is perfect for keeping all your grooming kit together. It is hard wearing and can quickly be washed and dried if it becomes grubby. I found it great for carrying things around the yard, as it can easily be hooked over a fence post or hung on a hook. It would also be ideal for taking to shows to carry brushes, studs, sprays etc to the collecting ring.

Equine America Silky Tail Un-Tangler Equine America Silky Tail Un-Tangler is 100% natural for a silky mane and tail and a show ring sheen. It is a nongreasy mane and tail conditioner that detangles and leaves a silky sheen. It contains Hydrolysed Silk, Lemongrass, and Coconut oils for healthy, beautiful mane and tail. It contains no silicon. The added essential oils have many beneficial properties, including being anti-microbial, antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungicidal. They are also known for their fly repellent properties. RRP: £10.99 www.equine-america.co.uk LR Comment: I found the Silky Tail Un-Tangler very effective, particularly in the spring, when it was still a bit cold to wash my horse’s tail unnecessarily, yet it was in a desperate state from the mud in the field. A little spray went a long way. A tip, which is on the bottle, spray it on and leave for a minute. It quickly penetrates the tail and I found that after a few brushes her tail was lovely and soft and straight again.

Absorbine BotanicalsTM Body Rinse Absorbine BotanicalsTM Body Rinse gently cools sore muscles and tendons when added to water for an after workout wash. The natural formula leaves the skin and coat conditioned with a healthy shine. It is super concentrated; just one 251ml bottle of Absorbine BotanicalsTM Body Rinse makes over 100 litres of the soothing wash. As with all Absorbine products, the Botanicals Body Rinse comes in sturdy easy-to-use packaging with a non-drip cap and handy hook to hang the bottle up easily. The bottle is even calibrated to indicate how much to use.

LR Comment: This is a lovely refreshing wash, which is perfect for rinsing off your horse after exercise. A little goes a long way and one has to imagine the horse appreciates its gorgeous scent as much as I did.

2 Once the water has been absorbed the pellets swell

3 Once laid the pellets make a soft, yet very absorbent bed

Swift Horse Bedding Wood pellets make excellent bedding for horse stables as they can help reduce cleaning times, compared with other beddings. Swift Horse Bedding pellets are dust free and highly absorbent. www.swiftenergyuk.com I have been using this pellet bedding for a number of months and I am pleased to report the bed is still easy to maintain with very little waste, thus my usual bedding costs have gone down considerably. I have used other brands in the past that have gone dusty in the drier months, but so far these pellets are not dusty at all. Another benefit is the removed bedding is rotting quickly, therefore keeping my muck heap to a minimum.

Absorbine BotanicalsTM Massage Foam Absorbine BotanicalsTM Massage Foam gently soothes muscles and tendons after exercise. Simply massage the foam onto tired legs and muscles to soothe, relax and relieve soreness. A soothing, relaxing massage can also help you develop a bond with your horse. The light foam is drip free for easy application and can be used under all types of wraps and bandages. It is available in a 473ml pump action bottle for easy dispensing. RRP: £15.95 www.absorbine.co.uk LR Comment: With each pump the blue liquid turns to foam, which can easily be massaged into the horse. I found it very addictive and easy to use. The biggest problem was staying awake and my horse was no help as she was already snoring away. Would suggest using after exercise when you can leave your horse to rest.

Emu Balm Emu Balm is a natural remedy to ease pain and aches, specifically assisting Arthritis, Back Pain, Sciatica, Frozen Shoulder and RSI. It contains anti-inflammatory properties, it is excellent for helping relieve inflammation and is proven to be a natural safe product to use even for hypo-allergenic skin types. The natural healing properties of Emu balm have been used by Aborigines for thousands of years. The balm is made with essential oils drawn from plant leaves and herbs, it is fast acting and non-greasy when massaged into the skin. If you would like to know more about the balm please call 0845 62 56736 or visit www.loremcare.co.uk

LR Comment: I was amazed by how quickly the Emu Balm appeared to work on my stiff and sore neck. Following an injury, my neck is fairly permanently stiff and sore. After rubbing the balm around the area, I found I had more range of movement and my neck was less creaky. The effect was almost immediate too.

feature Left: Some horses are naturally tidier than others! – but presentation is key, for showing. Below: Groom with elbow grease – it promotes circulation and creates coat shine, for a picture of health.

Product watch There are products around that enhance shine, but I am perhaps old-fashioned – I like to achieve it through hard work. A grooming mitt like Stephens’ ‘Sheepskin Grooming Mitt’ helps promote circulation and polishes the coat, which can enhance the animal’s natural colour. When bathing to prepare for a show, I find it better to bath my horse a few days before the show itself, to allow time for the natural coat oils to return, and make him naturally shiny. I like Cowboy Magic’s ‘Rosewater Shampoo’, which contains silk conditioners. If you haven’t got time to bath your horse, you can cheat with a shine-enhancing coat spray. Absorbine’s ‘Miracle Groom’ conditions, deodorises, detangles and shines in one spray-based application. There are various products around that intensify coat colour. One is Quic’s ‘Black Shampoo’; this product reduces ‘redness’ or sun-bleached coats, and brings out the ‘true black’ colour in a very dark horse. The company also produces ‘Quic Silver Shampoo’, which creates incredible silver and golden highlights.

Perfect

Presentation

Grey horses are undoubtedly the most difficult horses to keep clean as their coats and tails can look ‘yellowy’. Choose a bathing product or stain remover specifically for this problem. Cowboy Magic’s ‘Shine In, Yellow Out’ neutralises yellow stains and brightens hair colour.

G

rooming is such an important part of horse care – it helps us bond with our horse, is a pleasurable experience for him, helps aid equine health due to the removal of dead hair and skin cells, promotes circulation, and also helps us spot wounds and sore areas on our animals. But of course, if you enjoy showing, you will know that presentation is also a key part of the judging process for show horses. Much can be done to enhance your horse’s appearance and show him off to his best advantage.

Here are our top five tips for achieving the well-groomed look this season:

1

It is often better to bath a horse a few days before a show, to allow time for the natural coat oils to return, and make him naturally shiny. If you use a shine-enhancing coat spray, avoid using it excessively on the saddle area, if you are planning to compete in a ridden class.

2

Your horse’s mane and tail need to be presented according to the animal’s breed society rules, or the class you are entering. If your are leaving the mane ‘au naturel’, thin the mane and forelock to show off a refined head and fine neck, as a thick mane will be a distraction.

3

Plait according to your horse’s need (and breed society rulebook) – eg, with a very thick neck, plaits should be smaller and in higher numbers to make the neck appear finer. Thicker, rounder plaits that sit ‘high up’ on the crest can add definition to a ‘weedy’ neck. Some people stick to the ‘old’ rules about having an odd number of plaits along the neck, with the forelock plait making it even, but this is rarely adhered to today, in the show ring. It is generally easier to plait a mane that isn’t freshly washed.

4 5

The night before the show, cover your horse with a rug or sheet that covers his whole body, or utilise a tail cover and a head and neck cover with your rug. Take to the show any finishing touches like hoof oil for the feet, baby oil to bring out shine on the muzzle, and any whitening products for white areas like socks. But remember that these are designed to emphasise areas, so only use them areas you want to draw attention to. june 2015 Localrider 49

FEATURE Sarah Millis training on Day Equestrian’s waxed surface in Millstones Dressage Competition Yard, West Sussex

Building your dream arena With increasing daylight and dry summer weather around the corner, it’s the perfect time of year to start building or refurbishing your riding arena. We spoke to Day Equestrian, one of the largest arena material suppliers in the South East, who gave us some arena building tips. Choosing the location One of the most important decisions is choosing the ideal location for your new arena. It’s important to choose a site that takes into consideration: • Planning Permission – will you be overlooked by neighbours or footpaths? • Privacy – Will your horse be spooked by roads, footpaths, heavily used farm tracks and other noisy places nearby? • Access – You will need hard-standing access to and from your arena - otherwise your arena surface may become contaminated with mud (either walked in or from tractors or construction equipment). • Flood Risk - Has the area ever been known to flood? • Exposure – Building your arena in a sheltered spot will help during wet and windy weather conditions.

Choosing the arena surface It can be tricky deciding which arena surface to buy as there are

a huge number of choices available. Riding on a sand and rubber arena can feel distinctly different to riding on a waxed surface, so we recommend trying out the surface before investing. Here are just a few of the popular options available:

Wax coated surfaces As they do not require water, these surfaces are a popular choice for riders looking for a low maintenance option. equestrian centres and racecourses usually install wax coated surfaces as they can withstand heavy wear and perform well in all weather conditions. Pros • Long lasting • Low maintenance • Able to withstand heavy use • All-weather surface • No watering required • Dust free • Easy installation

Cons • May cost more than other surfaces

Day Equestrian supplies rubber chips and silica sands to arenas around the country Day Equestrian manufactures wax coated surfaces installed in many busy equestrian centres, including Millstones Dressage Competition Yard (West Sussex), Duckhurst Equestrian Centre (Kent) Rooting Street Equestrian Centre (Kent) and Belmoredean Dressage (West Sussex).

Sand and fibre premixed surfaces These surfaces are quick and easy to install. As with any non-waxed sand based surface, these surfaces require watering to stay at optimum performance. Pros • Easy installation • More fibre in the surface (compared to surfaces mixed on site) • Mixed evenly throughout

Cons • Requires watering • Can be more expensive than mixing on site

Day Equestrian’s waxed surface in the indoor arena at Patchetts Equestrian Centre, Hertfordshire

Day equestrian manufactures wax coated surfaces installed in many busy equestrian centres, including Millstones Dressage Competition Yard (West Sussex), Duckhurst equestrian Centre (Kent) Rooting Street equestrian Centre (Kent) and Belmoredean Dressage (West Sussex).

Sand and fibre surfaces (non-premixed) A popular, low cost option is mixing sand and fibre together on site. The fibres, usually packaged in bales, are mixed into the sand using a power harrow. Be very careful when selecting the sand for your arena - cheap sand that’s not designed for equestrian use may create a deep arena that does not drain effectively. Pros • Low cost

Cons • Requires watering • Fibre needs to be mixed in by a skilled operator using specialist equipment • May damage arena membrane when mixing fibres in (unless mixed by a skilled operator)

Sand and rubber surfaces One of the most economical options available is sand and rubber. Arena rubber chips are usually created from recycled tyres so it’s important to check the rubber for wire and metal as these can badly injure your horse. Pros • Low cost • Rubber does not freeze in cold weather • Easy installation

Cons • Requires watering • Cheap rubber from unreliable suppliers can contain lots of wire

Don’t forget to consider drainage

Poor drainage can be expensive and difficult to correct. When building an outdoor arena, it’s very important to collect and divert away surface water and any water that is likely to run into your arena from surrounding arenas, otherwise you may end up with a swimming pool rather than a riding arena. FEED NEWS

Dodson and Horrell Brand Ambassador Yazmin Pinchen competing at the Longines Global Champions Tour in London

What is Topline? You may often hear a horse owner referring to their horse’s topline, but what does this mean? Topline in horses is used to describe the muscle coverage over the top of the horse’s neck, back and hindquarters. The predominant ‘topline’ muscles are the rhomboideus, splenius, trapezius, longissimus dorsi and gluteal muscles, which enable the horse to collect and extend the neck, lift the shoulder and forehand, flex the back and engage the hind legs. It is important that the difference between fat and muscle within the neck is clear, therefore owners should feel their horse’s neck and use body fat scoring.

So how do you build muscle? The only way to build muscle is through an appropriate exercise regime and by providing essential dietary support together; neither method will work alone. A common myth is that fat can be turned to muscle, however this is unfortunately not the case. Muscle has a tremendous capacity to respond to training, with muscle fibres needing to stretch and lay down new cells in order to grow. Single bouts of exercise have very little effect on a horse’s fitness, therefore we need to train the muscles through repeated bouts of exercise to improve fitness. Although it can be tempting to get cracking with your horse’s new fitness regime it is important to get the balance right between fitness and injury. Ensure you give your horse time to rest and recover between training sessions to allow muscle recovery and do not increase the intensity of the exercise suddenly.

What exercises will help? To encourage muscle development a strength training programme should be initiated, with specific exercises to target the key muscle groups and engage the muscles correctly. Ensure that your horse is working actively and correctly even when out for a short hack to promote correct muscle development. One of the most effective ways to develop the hindquarters is through the use of hill work. Encouraging your horse to walk actively uphill (no jogging allowed) approximately seven times, twice a week to engage the gluteal muscles. Don’t worry if you do not live in a hilly area, cavaletti poles 70 Localrider JUNE 2015

Words by Dr Chloe Bristow MA(Cantab) VetMB MRCVS (Dodson & Horrell Nutritional Team Manager and Veterinary Surgeon)

encourage the gluteals to work through lifting of the hind leg so can be utilised instead. To develop the longissimus dorsi muscle core strength exercises can be used that will improve tone and flexibility such as ‘carrot stretches’. These stretches must be done whilst the muscles are warm to avoid damage so ensure you warm-up first. Take a piece of carrot and encourage your horse to stretch to each side and to the chest, repeating several times and ensuring you are performing the exercise evenly on both sides. Ask for your vet or physiotherapist’s advice if you are unsure.

So what should I feed? The main component of muscle and body tissue is protein, which is supplied in limited amounts by forage (grass, hay and haylage). However, working horses will require supplementation in the form of a fully balanced compound feed or balancer. Some riders can be afraid of feeding protein in the belief that it will cause excitable behaviour - it won’t. Fizziness and excitability may be the result of a horse having excess energy through being fed too many calories, but not too much protein. It is not just the level of protein in a feed we need to consider, but more importantly the quality, determined by the amino acid ‘building blocks’ from which it is made up. The horse’s body can produce some amino acids, however there are a number of essential amino acids such as lysine, which when limited will limit muscle development. The most common problem that we see is a horse being fed less than the recommended amount of hard feed, as extra calories aren’t needed, without ‘topping-up’ with a balancer to supply essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals. Dodson & Horrell recommend either feeding the full recommended amount of a performance feed that contains lysine or, if your horse does not need the calories, use a high quality balancer that contains lysine. If you feed a chaff alongside your feeds consider using alfalfa, a natural source of high quality protein. Changing your horse onto a high quality protein diet, alongside an appropriate exercise regime should be sufficient to enable topline development within six weeks, however if no improvement is made a protein supplement could be considered.

Mollichaff HoofKind Mollichaff HoofKind is ideal for good doers as well as laminitics, as it is a complete low energy, low starch, low sugar, high fibre feed in a bag. It contains a balanced blend of oat straw, alfalfa, fibre pellets, soya oil, vitamins, minerals, biotin, trace elements and antioxidants. It can be fed in conjunction with a high quality forage such as High Fibre or Timothy HorseHage to horses and ponies that are in moderate to light work, resting or laminitic. For those horses and ponies in harder work, with increased energy requirements it can be fed with additional concentrates. Each bag carries the ‘Hoof Kind’ symbol to denote that the forage is low in sugar and starch and is suitable for all horses and ponies including laminitics. For further information and advice on feeding, please contact the HorseHage Helpline on 01803 527 257 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk

Speedi-Beet Speedi-Beet, from British Horse Feeds, is a highly nutritious beet pulp feed perfect for good doers when fed in small amounts (with a vitamin and mineral supplement or low calorie balancer). This unique beet pulp feed Speedibeet can be soaked in warm water before and and ready to feed in less than after soaking ten minutes and has approval from the Laminitis Trust. For further information contact British Horse Feeds on 01765 680300 or visit www.britishhorsefeeds.com

NAF Five Star Laminaze Horses and ponies on restricted grass intake require additional support to remain fit and healthy. Laminaze is a unique blend of over 40 ingredients combining with key gut support, bio-available sulphur and targeted nutrients, in a palatable formula to maintain hoof health and improve their diet and lifestyle. Prebiotics and live probiotics are included for their ability to a stable, healthy gut environment. Naturally sourced antioxidants are present to support the liver. Bio-available sulphur (MSM) is recommended for supporting healthy hoof growth and strong sulphur bonds within the laminae. Laminaze contains all the key nutrients for dietary support of prone individuals, especially around the time of year when spring and autumn flushes of grass occur. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

NAF Slim New Slim is a highly palatable weight management supplement, designed to provide essential micronutrients to those individuals on a restricted diet. When feed intake is reduced, there is a risk of vitamin and mineral deficiency, which is where Slim comes into its own. The unique blend of ingredients work in synergy with naturally occurring metabolism boosters to provide all those on a restricted diet need for health and vitality. With essential vitamins and naturally sourced antioxidants, Slim works to naturally promote wellbeing for good do’ers, whilst supporting healthy weight loss. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Horslyx Horses which are prone to weight gain and laminitis will often have to endure a diet, which minimises the calories they receive and avoids turnout onrich pasture. However, it is important not to forget that these horses still require vital vitamins and minerals in the diet and when feed and turnout is simply reduced, they often do not receive the nutrients they require to maintain health and well-being. Horslyx offers an ideal method of controlling calorie intake without compromising on valuable vitamins and minerals. The carefully chosen ingredients offer a balanced and palatable method of feeding the required nutrients to help support hooves, coat and skin and general well-being. The rate of consumption of food is the key to safe feeding for overweight horses and those suffering from or prone to laminitis, and Horslyx is perfect, as licking takes time and patience. Allowing a horse restricted access to Horslyx gives you peace of mind that your horse is receiving a balanced diet without the risk of adding extra calories through concentrate feed. For more information visit www.horslyx.co.uk or telephone 01697 332 592.

These ingredients, together with herbal support, work to provide optimum gut condition. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Vetrogard Intense Animalife, the creators of Vetrofen and Vetroflex, have launched a dual action, nutritional formulation that has been designed to support gastric health and comfort. Studies have shown that horses fed Vetrogard have improved appetite, condition and faecal quality scores after using the product. Suitable for all equines from foals to senior horses, Vetrogard Intense supports the natural defences of the epithelium. Call 0845 365 0050 to find your local Animalife Accredited Retailer or order online at www.animalife.co.uk

Lifeforce Range from Alltech The Lifeforce Range from Alltech has been tailored to meet the needs of horses at every stage of life from the early developmental stages as a foal, through the demands of competition, and well into retirement. Lifeforce Focus is specially designed for leisure and companion horses or those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimize digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies. Lifeforce Formula is a supplement specially designed for breeding horses and horses in moderate activity by supporting their immune function. Additionally the supplement helps support the reproductive system of mares and stallions, while supporting fermentation of feeds and forages in the caecum, enabling your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all feed sources. Lifeforce Elite is specially designed for competition horses and those faced with stressful situations. It supports a healthy immune system, increases the availability of antioxidants and creates a healthy digestive environment. TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes TopSpec UlsaKind cubes are formulated to be highly sympathetic to the equine digestive system, even when it is compromised by extreme acidity. The formula is very low in starch (UltraLowStarchAnalysis) and sugar and high in fibre, but still has a conditioning index of 12MJ/kg making these cubes both ‘Non-Heating’ and conditioning. TopSpec UlsaKind Cubes are ideal in those circumstances where the internal surface of the stomach has been eroded, because they contain very high levels of Beta-glucans which form a gel and coat the stomach lining with a protective film. The gel-like stomach contents are less likely to splash the upper squamous epithelium in the stomach. These Beta-glucans also slow the rate of passage of feed through the stomach and intestines because of the sticky, gel-like consistency of the feed. In the stomach this means that the periods of time when the stomach is empty and therefore highly acidic, are reduced. It also means that the small intestine has more time to absorb nutrients, reducing the levels of carbohydrate reaching the hindgut and potentially leading to excess lactic acid production. This effect is augmented by the addition of a source of pectin to the formula. Pectin thickens to a viscous mucus in the acidic conditions of the stomach. The highly digestible fibre in these cubes helps to promote the beneficial bacteria in the hindgut therefore further helping to maintain a healthy hindgut environment. Sodium, calcium and magnesium salts are added to the blend to provide the correct level of these major minerals. The calcium and magnesium sources also have a mild, short-term, buffering effect against stomach acid. For further information contact the Multiple Award-Winning Helpline on 01845 565030 or visit www.topspec.com

other feed news Spillers Balancers While grass can usually supply plenty of calories for most of the year it’s important to be aware that it may not provide all the nutrients your horse needs for good health. This is when a Balancer can be useful, making up for the shortfall, but without adding unnecessary extra calories. Regardless of discipline, horses that maintain a healthy bodyweight are receiving the right amount of energy for their workload. For horses maintaining weight well on less than their recommended ration of feed, the addition of balancer will help to ensure that vitamin, mineral and protein requirements are met, without feeding excess calories. Horses rely on a balance of nutrients to maintain overall health and well-being. These include antioxidants, such as selenium and vitamin E, to maintain a strong immune system. Methionine, calcium, zinc and biotin are particularly important for strong hooves and a healthy coat and skin and amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, help to support tissue repair and muscle tone alongside many other important roles. Balancers are very concentrated feeds designed to supply these important daily vitamins and minerals, together with the quality protein that horses on forage-only diets or low levels of feed need. They are fed small quantities, usually by the cupful, so that there are no additional unwanted calories. Balancers often also contain functional ingredients such as live yeast to support digestive health or glucosamine to support healthy joints for extra peace of mind. A balancer can also be useful to provide additional nutrients to support performance in harder working horses that maintain condition well on forage only or on low energy feeds designed for horses in lighter work. For advice on feeding Balancers ring the SPILLERS® Care-Line on 01908 226626 or visit www.spillers-feeds.com june 2015 Localrider 73
