here is so much success and achievement to celebrate in this issue of Localrider. Whilst qualifying for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) in itself is a huge achievement, winning for most is the incredible dream. Something the East Kent Hunt branch of the Pony Alex & Dixie Club did on three occasions this year, winning the Virbac 3D Worming Cup, the Stable Cup and the most highly coveted Prince Philip Cup. Turn to page 40 to read more about their amazing result. After a night dancing with the stars of the show jumping world at the British Showjumping Awards Ball (page 48), I was up early and over to the NEC to watch the classes in the TopSpec Arena. I felt so proud watching Alex Kelly, who produces many pages for us in each issue, showing Jane Townshend’s broodmare Raritat in the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand of the Year exceeding 148cm. Watching the classes at HOYS requires nerves of steel, as nearly almost always the horses are called forward in reverse order and to add to the excitement they always have a few extra left in the line, so no one knows for certain who the winner will be. I was delighted for Jane, Alex and the whole Classictop Stud team when Raritat (Dixie) was pulled forward in fourth place. We thought you might enjoy this picture of Alex and Dixie (see above).

Sunshine Tour Championships I have been out and about with my camera over the over the past month and I particularly enjoyed two days at Hickstead for the Sunshine Tour Championships. Despite dedicating fourteen pages in this issue to the event, we only feature a small number of the winners and in fact there were whole rings I didn’t even get to watch. It was good to see lots of familiar faces as well as some new. One of my favourites was three-year-old Ella Freeman with her pony Bella, winners of the Super Supreme of the Show on Saturday. You can find out more about Bella, our cover star Beatrice Allaway and all the other competitors featured this month by turning to page 14.
Best of the Rest Despite the terrible thought that we really are heading towards winter, this issue is packed full of show reports, news and stories. There is eventing from the South of England Horse Trials as well as Littleton Manor. A round-up of local triumphs from the Berkeley Group Pony Club Championships at Cholmondeley Castle, as well as the Pony Club Land Rover Regional Championships at Keysoe in Bedfordshire. We’ve driving action from Bradbourne, showing from the Balanced Horse Feeds Championships, as well as gorgeous pictures from the Chiddingfold, Leconfield & Cowdray Hunt Hunter Trials. There is also news from across the Solent, as we catch up with Kingates Equestrian Dressage and Show Jumping Champions. Plus, we wish all those heading to Aintree for the Dodson & Horrell National Amateur Championships the very best of luck. You can discover some of the locals who have qualified on page 46. Work is already underway on the Christmas edition and as always we will be looking to bring you the very best local news, as well as our celebrated ‘Bumper Giveaways’. In the meantime keep in touch via the website, email or social media.

and international showjumping - plus a host of sporting and musical entertainment - will take centre stage at the Ex-Cel London at Royal Victoria Docks from April 12-17. Billed as “a celebration of the horse,” almost a week of thrilling action is guaranteed, with headline names topping the bill from at home and abroad across morning, afternoon and evening sessions. Some of equestrian sport’s greatest spectacles will be paraded - from the serenity of dressage to dramatic showjumping action, including a grand prix finale and the puissance - while showstopping performances can be expected from The Gaga Experience and Pierre Fleury and his amazing horses. British Olympian Richard Davison will conduct his highlyacclaimed master-class, offering a fascinating insight into the sport of dressage, one that has never been more popular in Great Britain following golden successes for the likes of Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester. Dressage will take centre-stage on the opening two days, showcasing competitions like Grand Prix Freestyle, Grand Prix Special and Prix St George, with showjumping beginning on Good Friday and running throughout the Easter weekend. An extensive shopping village will keep visitors occupied, before watching the performances and warm-up arenas where top riders demonstrate their outstanding skills, all of which can be done with a relaxing drink in the most comfortable of surroundings, which will include VIP hospitality. Show director and international dressage rider and trainer Daniel Watson, who is based in Kent, said: “These are exciting times for equestrian sport in Great Britain, and we cannot wait to unveil the London Spring International Horse Show, an event that will illustrate the very best of world-class sport and entertainment.”
The Racecourse Association (RCA), in association with Pitchcare, Watt Fences and Fornells recently announced the winners of the 2016 Racecourse Groundstaff Awards, which celebrate the hard work and dedication of groundstaff across the country who consistently ensure the highest quality racing surfaces. Brighton Racecourse came away with Winning the Groundstaff of the Year in the Flat category for 2016. Other winners included Cartmel (in the Jump category) and Ascot in the Dual purpose category. “This win is great kudos for us as a local small track and being up against the big racecourses” said Sam Windridge, Executive Director. “The small team of four managed to come away with top honours for their improvements to the racing surface, management of vehicle movement on the track, enhancements to road crossings, and innovative turf management practices. We are so very proud of the work they have achieved!” George Hill, Clerk of the Course “The team are delighted to win this award and although this is my first season in my new role, I have had great support from everyone at the racecourse, especially from head groundsman Richard and the groundstaff in Marcus and Justin. We have all worked hard throughout the season so we are looking forward to celebrating this achievement. We will continue to work hard throughout the winter to ensure we are ready for racing again in April.”
Tickets are now on sale, together with hospitality packages, and further information is available at the show website www.londonspringinternational.com

He has used his position to develop programmes across the Equine Sector and has provided much needed dispassionate and effective leadership.” Roly Owers receiving his award Roly joined World from BEVA President, Mark Bowen Horse Welfare as Chief Executive in January 2008, having previously led the charity’s fundraising and communication teams from 1999 to 2003. Chichester RDA plea for rosettes Chichester RDA are in desperate need of rosettes that are in a presentable condition, which can be reused at their centre. The rosettes can be any placing, award or category. If you can help, please message Vicky or Natalie via the group’s new Facebook page which can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/ChichesterRDA
Do you need a stable cat? When you hear the words “Feral Cats” what springs to mind? A risky, scruffy looking rabble? Think again! PussyCat Lodge in Essex (registered charity 1148883) regularly rescues colonies of shy feral cats, has them neutered and vet-checked then homes them to stables or farms. They need security, but not much human company. They won’t steal your sofa spot or sit on the newspaper you’re trying to read. They just need somewhere safe, warm and reliable. Horses often form friendships with feral cats and farmers can manage their rodent populations without cruel poisons. You can find out more about adopting a feral cat here www.pussycatlodge.co.uk

The headliners include the world-renowned equestrian artist, Santi Serra who is set to wow the 90,000 visitors with his Spanish flair and unique performance. Joining him on the centre stage will be the elegant Portuguese Lusitanos, often referred to as ‘The Pride of Portugal’, who will be showcasing their beautiful skills of horsemanship and harmony. Swift Bedding Over the last few years pellet bedding has become increasingly popular and one of the popular premium local brands is Swift Bedding. The white pellet is made using 100% uncontaminated sawdust and wood chips in a mill and are heat treated making them bacteria free, ideal for equine hospitals or studs. The pellets are supplied in 15kg bags, about the quarter of the size of a bale of Swift Bedding pictured before shavings, making and after expansion them easier to transport and store. Approximately half a bucket of water needs to be added to the bag to activate the pellet, which can expand to four times its original size. After 15-20 minutes, what is left is a combination of dry, fluffy pellets and some whole ones remaining. Local event rider Tom Crisp uses the pellets and he said: “The bed is so absorbent. The wet forms a tiny little patch, which you can scoop out daily, thus adding less to the muck heap. The stable staff now finish the yard more quickly, allowing more time for the horses to be exercised.”
Spain comes to Surrey Dominique Parsons O’Sullivan was originally a Surrey girl, but now lives in Andalusia riding and producing Iberian horses at all levels up to Grand Prix. This winter Dominique has a number of clinics taking place in Godalming in Surrey and is currently taking bookings for November and December. Dominique said: “I am Classically trained and offer Spanish horses for sale to meet a client’s criteria and budget - be it weanlings to advanced horses (mares, geldings or stallions). I recently sourced an unusually coloured yearling, which has just gone to the UK to a delighted new owner. Training is exclusively managed by me which enables me to continually assess and develop each horse’s potential. Recognising the importance of building a positive partnership in the first few weeks following the purchase of a new horse I offer a post- sales support package. Arrangements are bespoke and based on individual needs. Living and working with Spanish horses each day I have a wealth of experience to offer and I would be delighted to help guide you on your journey to own an Iberian horse.” To speak to Dominique about any of the above or to find out more about the forthcoming clinics Tel: 07519020261 or email: spanishhorsesales110@gmail.com

Winter workouts for your horse or pony As winter approaches think about making the best use of your time. Did you know that you can give a horse the equivalent work of 40 minutes under saddle with a well-planned 20 minute session on the lunge. Five minutes of warm-up at the start and cool-down at the end leaves ten minutes for real gymnastic work in-between. Making use of poles, lots of transitions, rein changes and spiralling will get your horse working over his back, with engagement and wither-lift. It is important that your horse is really stepping through from behind and working into a soft, light contact and a good lunge aid such as the EquiAmi will ensure this. It is pointless if he’s hurtling around on his forehand or escaping through the shoulder, says Dr Hilary Bentley. He needs to be working in balance and carrying himself which is what the aid achieves. DR Hilary Bentley continued: “We always suggest changing the menu regularly – starting on a different rein each time, varying the order of activities during the session and keeping the horse interested. A square of poles at about fifteen metres is great to lunge around, spiral into the centre and then move into a corner, shorten the rein, so you are lungeing over two of the poles before going large again. Clearly these exercises are for fit horses but a lot can be achieved doing these exercises mostly in walk for others.” Get the best out of what you have and be rewarded but a supple, wellbalanced and happy horse. www.equiami.com
The Charlotte Dujardin Collection by Equisafety Juan-Carlos Capelli, Longines Vice President and Head of International Marketing (right) presenting Ascot’s Chairman Johnny Weatherby with a Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Racing Horses 1911 in rose gold.
Longines celebrates its 10-year partnership with Ascot Longines the Swiss watch brand and Ascot recently celebrated their successful partnership which has spanned the last decade. The association with Ascot, which started in 2006 and saw the brand become the Official Partner, Timekeeper and Watch of the British racecourse, marked for Longines a significant milestone in its involvement in horse racing in Europe. The brand has nurtured a passion for equestrian sports since 1878 and is now a partner of some of the major equestrian events all across the globe. To mark this celebration, Longines was proud to donate a cheque to The Injured Jockeys Fund, a charity dear to Ascot, which aims at improving the lives of injured jockeys and their families by providing appropriate assistance, financial or otherwise, in a prompt and sympathetic manner. The Injured Jockeys Fund is also supported by the 2016 Longines Ladies Award’s recipient HRH The Princess Royal, as Patron of the charity. In addition, a Longines Equestrian Pocket Watch Racing Horses 1911 in rose gold was presented to Ascot’s Chairman Johnny Weatherby as a gift for this special anniversary. Ascot in turn presented to Juan-Carlos Capelli, Longines Vice President and Head of International Marketing, a miniature of Yeats – the only horse to have won the Ascot Gold Cup four times – by the equine sculptor Charlie Langton.
Constantly pushing the possibilities of high visibility design, the Charlotte Dujardin Collection is impressive, complex and meticulous in its detail and stands out in the market by using technically advanced laser cutting, intuitive design and unique garment construction. A profound understanding of equines, plus an instinctive desire to create what does not yet exist, drives Equisafety to further evolve and offer unrivalled performance apparel to its customers. The Renver Quilted Jacket is a lightweight, breathable quilted jacket, which uses Equilux™ insulation quilt and black 4-way stretch softshell fabric for ease of movement. It has a 2-way front zip, 2 hidden pockets with waterproof zip garages plus, as an added bonus, the sleeves are removable thus creating a stunning gilet. Artistically designed reflective piping adds credence to its visibility. To find out more about the Renver and other items in the collection visit www.equisafety.com

Demi Howard-Cartwright excels at Petplan Equine Area Festival
E
ight-year-old Demi Howard-Cartwright and her horse Arad Sapphire, known as Saffy, competed at their second Petplan Equine Area Festival at Crofton Manor in Hampshire in October. Demi had set herself the target of making it into the top ten in her competition – and she made it, finishing tenth, with a score of 64% in the Preliminary 19 class. Demi was delighted with her pony Saffy and now has her sights set on even higher pIacings and qualification for the Petplan Equine Area Festival Final at Hartpury College one day. “I have such a brilliant pony, commented Demi. “Saffy was very calm today and really tried to do her very best, she can sometimes be a bit spooky, but we put a lot of hard work in, riding in the evening after school and at weekends. It must have paid off as she was focussed and it showed in her marks. Getting tenth place was a real bonus. I can’t wait for our next competition.” Kate Hopkins, Marketing Executive for Petplan Equine commented: “We are so very pleased for Demi and Saffy, what a result, and to achieve her target at her second Area Festival is worthy of a future star. We will be keeping an eye on her and wish her the best of luck for the winter competition season.” To find out more about the Petplan Equine Area Festival series please visit: www.petplanequine.co.uk/dressage Demi and Saffy, tenth Petplan Equine Area Festival at Crofton Manor

S
eptember saw representatives from Tunbridge Wells twin town, Wiesbaden, along with other towns, Chemnitz also in Germany and Ljubljana in Slovenia, descend on the town of Tunbridge Wells for the annual Twin Town riding Competition. mayor Dave neve welcomed the teams and supporters to Tunbridge Wells Town Hall on their arrival and wished them all good luck in the competition, which took place at Chelwood Gate equestrian Centre, the base of the Swedish equestrian Team during the olympics. The competition requires exceptional equestrian skills. The competitors have to ride a dressage test and a jump a course of fences after having just five minutes to familiarise themselves with unknown horses. Chemnitz won the team competition with Wiesbaden 2, the runners-up. Josephine nord from Wiesbaden earned the HSbC sponsored Top rider Cup. The mayor presented the prizes to the riders at an evening of celebration at The Warren restaurant in the High Street, Tunbridge Wells. Tunbridge Wells Twinning and friendship Association Chairman Julian Stanyer also presented a special award donated by the association. The competition held its inaugural event back in 1984 and it has been held annually since with each town taking it in turn to host the competition.
Isabelle Sheehy and Dymock Ice Dancer won the British Dressage Regional Myquest Intro Test and was third in the Prelim at Pachesham Equestrian Centre, qualifying at both levels for the Myquest National finals at Bury Farm on 28th October. Bursary for Abi Abigail Vaughan Smith and her pony Memphis claimed The Kellythorpe Stud Junior Bursary Award at the Coloured Horse and Pony Summer 2016 Championship. At the three day show, Abi was one of eight junior riders selected by a talent spotter to come forward for an hour long master class with one of the UK’s top showing producers, Julie Templeton. “The instruction by Julie Templeton was invaluable, and I had no expectation that Abi would take any of the top three prizes, so I was completely overwhelmed when she took the Junior Bursary Championship winning £250 prize money which can redeemed against training,” said her mother, Jane. Jane continued: “Competitively 2016 has been a quiet year for Abi, who is a Claremont School pupil focused on Common Entrance exams. So it has been fantastic to end the showing season on such a high, particularly as Abi and Memphis claimed a multitude of top prizes throughout the three days.” Right: Abi and Memphis claimed The Kellythorpe Stud Junior Bursary Award at the Coloured Horse and Pony Summer 2016 Championship.

Perfect boots for winter The unique Climate Control System in all Equitector boots has saved many riders from cold feet and chilblains during winter. Temperatures do not have to drop that low for riders and yard staff to feel the cold and once the feet become cold, the rest of the body follows. Once your foot is inside the boot, the unique insulative system works like a thermos vacuum flask and your feet should feel they are at room temperature, even if it is -20 degrees celcius outside. www.equitector.com

Effective management of tapeworm burdens in horses Words by Dr Corrine Austin, scientist and director of Austin Davis Biologics
What do we know about the horse tapeworm? Three species of tapeworm are capable of infecting horses; the most common in the UK is Anoplocephala perfoliata. It can grow up to 8 cm long and is made up of a series of segments. The head has four suckers which the tapeworm uses to attach itself to a small region of the intestines called the ileocaecal junction. This localised colonisation causes damage to the intestines and the presence of large numbers causes intestinal obstruction and clinical disease, resulting in colic.
scientists at Austin Davis Biologics to reliably diagnose tapeworm burdens. It works like a blood test, but instead, uses saliva that you collect yourself. The test is scientifically proven to diagnose tapeworm burdens with high accuracy, so it tells you if your horse has a burden and whether you need to worm or not.
How do you introduce EquiSal Tapeworm testing into your worm control programme? It is easy to integrate an EquiSal Tapeworm test into your worm control programme – simply test every six months at a time when you would consider routine worming for tapeworm. Your programme should also include regular worm egg counts for redworm and roundworm, and a winter worming dose for encysted redworm. Tim Stockdale, leading international showjumper, tests all of his horses every six months using EquiSal Tapeworm testing. He only worms horses at his yard when they are diagnosed with a burden and the last time they were all tested, none required worming.
What is involved with doing the test? To test for tapeworm, all you need to do is collect saliva from your horse using the specially designed EquiSal swab and then return it to the lab using the freepost bag included with the test kit. Results are emailed with a worming recommendation. Test kits are available through veterinary practices and SQP stockists and online at www.equisal.com For more information contact: enquiries@equisal.com The tapeworm life cycle is different from other horse worms as it requires an intermediate host. Infected horses pass tapeworm eggs onto the pasture where they are consumed by free-living oribatid mites. The eggs develop into larvae within the mite until the mite is ingested by a grazing horse, allowing the larvae to be released into the intestines. The larvae complete their life cycle by attaching to the lining of the intestines where they develop into adult tapeworms capable of releasing eggs. Oribatid mites live within the grass and soil of our grasslands, but the number of infected mites depends on the number of infected horses grazing the paddocks and their level of infection. It is essential to manage tapeworm burdens in horses and this also minimises the number of infected mites present. Most importantly, good management of tapeworm infections, by testing before resorting to the use of wormers, reduces the risk of resistant tapeworms developing.
Routine testing not routine worming, how can you test for tapeworm in horses?
Although tapeworm eggs can sometimes be seen in worm egg counts, this method is unreliable for tapeworm detection as the eggs are released in specialised packets, rather than spread throughout the faeces. Tapeworm burdens are more accurately diagnosed using either a blood or a saliva test, which both detect tapeworm-specific antibodies present in the sample.
The EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test The EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test has been developed by
THE SALIVA TEST FOR TAPEWORM By Austin Davis Biologics Ltd.
Scientific validation published by Veterinary Clinical Pathology • Proven accuracy, equivalent to blood testing • Test every 6 months as part of your worm control programme (tapeworms cannot be reliably detected by egg counts)
• Current statistics show that 77% of horses do not need worming for tapeworm

Smarten up this winter
M
any of us struggle to look our collective best at events in winter. There’s the dreaded ‘mane rubs’; mud stains; yellowy tails; thick coats, dry and coarse mane hair; and the fact that bathing is trickier with the cold weather. But while summer events have tailed off, there’s still a raft of things to do in winter. Fun rides, the TREC winter series, hunting, Jumping and Style Indoor Eventing, as well as lots of show jumping and dressage events held at local indoor arenas. Much can be done to enhance the horse’s appearance and show him off to his best advantage, even if you are struggling with the mud and interchangeable weather.
Words by Stephen Biddlecombe
Here are our top tips for winter grooming: •
If you are clipping ahead of an event, clip a week before the show itself, so it doesn’t look too ‘fresh’. Any mistakes in the clip will also start to disappear.
•
If you’re leaving the mane ‘au naturel’, thin the mane and forelock to show off a refined head and fine neck, as a thick mane will be a distraction. To tidy the mane or tail without pulling, try Smart Grooming’s Smart Tails Thinning Comb, to give the pulled look without discomfort. Coarse blades are good for thick, full tails and manes which haven’t been tidied before, or are very coarse. Fine blades are mostly used on hair which has already been tidied or is quite fine, while Medium blades are ideal for ‘average’ thickness.
•
If you like to trim the whiskers for a smart look, try Smart Grooming’s Equi-Shave, for accident free whisker trimming. It is effectively a horsey disposable razor!
•
For stains, try Cowboy Magic’s ‘Shine In Yellowout’ - a shower in a
Many of us struggle with mucky winter horses. This pic was taken on a sunny October day before a dressage event. Perhaps a rug would have been a good idea!
bottle! It takes yellow stains out of manes, coats and tails, and gives dull looking hair more sheen. It also leaves horses’ hair looking shiny and smelling good. •
Plait according to the horse’s need - with a very thick neck, plaits should be smaller and in higher numbers, to make the neck appear finer. Thicker, rounder plaits that sit ‘high up’ on the crest can add definition to a ‘weedy’ neck.
•
Quarter markings define the horse or pony’s rump area; use either a quarter marking sheet, or a body brush and a steady hand.
It’s clipping time!
Photography by Jules
Here are our top clipping tips, courtesy of Clippersharp: 1.
Always check the ‘tension set’ on the clippers - the spring affects the way the blades work and will sometimes give a chewed affect, or leave very noticeable tram lines, if the tension is wrong.
2.
Oil regularly, at least every 10 minutes, this will ensure that the blades will stay as cool as possible and help to prolong the sharpness of the blades.
3.
If your horse has sensitive skin, you may find there is a reaction to certain clipper oils. Try a product that’s effective on very sensitive skins; some boast essential oils to soothe the skin, as well as lubricating the blades.
4.
Keep a spare set of blades – don’t rely on one set. There is nothing more frustrating than having a set of blades go blunt half way through a clip, and then having to make do with a half clipped horse whilst blades are being sharpened.
5.
Plan when you are going to clip – If you keep your horse on a yard with other horses, make sure you don’t start clipping at feed time or turning out time. A quiet, calm horse is so much easier to deal with than one that is itching to get out into the field or waiting for feed time.
6.
If you are not used to clipping yourself, you might prefer to start along the horse’s neck or shoulder, so that you get the feel of the clippers.
7.
Start by just resting the clippers against the horse before turning them on, then move them over his body so that he gets used to the look of them and the cable. Next take them some way away from him and switch them on. Even a horse that has previously been calm may need reassurance after a year or so without being clipped!
For yellowy stains, try Cowboy Magic’s ‘Shine In Yellowout’ - a shower in a bottle.
If your horse is in hard work he will need clipping around this time. NOVEMBER 2016 Localrider 61

Carriage Driving
one-day-event
Bradbourne Carriage Driving Centre, Sevenoaks, Kent Photographs by Paul Tester
C
ompetitors from Kent and surrounding area all enjoyed a fun and friendly one-day-event at the Bradbourne Carriage Driving Centre in Sevenoaks. This competition has been successfully running for over twenty years and is very much aimed at novice drivers or those bringing out youngsters for the first time. It is renowned for being a show to enter if you need a bit of friendly encouragement and support before taking the step up to two day events. Sara Howe is always on hand to help and really enjoys seeing newcomers progress. Of course there were still a few old faces around and this year was no exception as Anna Grayson (World Pony Pairs Champion) drove her new pony Syd gently around the course to build up his confidence and experience. Meanwhile she very charitably allowed her back stepper Kerry Whiteman to soundly beat her in the Open Pony class driving one of the ponies Anna took to the world championships. The one day event saw over 30 entries this year which was pleasing as it unfortunately clashed with Goodwood. There were two dressage arenas feeding into the tricky cones course that Sara had built in the sandschool. This is what happens when the course designer gets ideas from her own team training with Boyd Exell.
This was then followed by Sec B only which included six hazards. There was a shorter course for those who wanted the option, while others drove through the beautiful Bradbourne wild fowl reserve. This year Sara introduced a veteran’s class at the request of one of her more senior clients! So anyone who considered themselves eligible was entered. The class was won by Sue Cox – a very long standing member of the club - who drove one of Sara’s ponies from the team - Harry. Another introduction this year, which proved very popular, was a team challenge. This class was kindly sponsored by Cathy White and winners each received a sash and bottle of fizz. Drivers were paired together from the novice and open classes by picking names out of a hat and each pair were encouraged to support their team members throughout the event. The team challenge was won by Kerry Whiteman and Charlotte Drew. Three generations from one family were also competing making it a real family occasion. Cathy White in the veteran’s class, Anna Brunner in the multiples class and Izzy Brunner in the short course class while grandad, dad and son cheered them all on through the obstacles. From the very oldest to the very youngest driver all had great fun and the event was deemed another success.

Feed news
Additional fibre can be provided by feeding Speedi-Beet or Fibre-Beet
Forage, Fibre, Feed
In this issue Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds gives some advice for winter and what to consider when planning a feeding regime.
O
ver the past few years we have had winters ranging from endless wind and rain (2006) through intense cold, ice and snow (2009) and back to intense wind and rain (2015). We cannot predict the conditions, but can be certain of a few things. Days are short and the grass isn’t growing. There is less time to eat, horses are diurnal - active during daylight, and preserved forage tends to be lower in nutrients, as drying or ensiling will result in some loss of nutrients.
Maintaining body heat
Beyond this there is less certainty but it will be cold for much of the season and the temperature will be below the horse’s zone of thermo-neutrality. This is the range of environmental temperature where the horse can maintain its own body heat without resorting to physiological changes such as sweating or shivering. As owners we can offset this by providing stabling when the weather dictates and blankets when we turn out on those bright frosty days. So we can keep them moderately warm and comfortable but we need to address the limited feeding time and less nutrient dense feed. We’ve taken steps to stop them losing body heat and now we need to maintain energy intake. All this talk of conservation and generation may seem obvious, but bear in mind that, when the weather is mild, 80% of feed goes for heat generation in the resting horse and for every 1°C drop in the environment an average horse needs to generate an extra 2 MJ of energy. That’s up to 50MJ of energy, or the equivalent of an extra 6kg of hay, when there may well be six hours less eating time.
What are the options
We could give a high energy hard feed, but unless you are maintaining exercise some of that fast release energy will store as glycogen or fat. Better to have extra slow release energy sources - fibre fermenting in the hindgut - to maintain a constant flow and, at the same time, generating heat to help maintain core body temperature. By paying attention to forage quality we can utilise forage to its maximum and then supply additional nutrients through supplemental feed to meet the animal’s requirement. This is where beet products can come to the fore. Not only does beet have a high energy level, it has been shown to have a prebiotic effect. Fermentation of dietary fibre can be increased – due to the stimulation of hemicellulytic microbes - improving the energy release from other dietary components such as hay; it has also been shown that feeding beet pulp increases the digestibility of alfalfa
fibre by 25%. The generation of extra slow release energy that will help overcome the two major problems of winter feeding. The approach of feeding a beet based product like Speedi-Beet or Fibre-Beet to a base ration of preserved forage makes winter feeding simple. If temperatures tumble an extra helping of SpeediBeet can be given, and it’s not going to disrupt the gut microbes, or it can be reduced if your horse’s condition is increasing. This application of forage plus fibre keeps energy intake and heat generation high, maintains gut fill and so aids good digestive function. It also provides activity during stabling and, with a little imagination in spatial presentation, can help fulfil the horse’s behavioural response to foraging. The third string to winter feeding is to supply sufficient micronutrients. Preservation of forages can affect levels of vitamins, some trace elements and phytochemicals and protein/oil quality; it is sensible to provide a supplement. It may not be necessary on good quality grazing, but over winter it could be needed. As such it is worth considering a feed balancer.
Forage, fibre, feed
British Horse Feeds have long held to the philosophy of forage, fibre, feed. That is, supplement the forage as much as possible with additional fibre (best a super-fibre, such as Speedi-Beet/Fibre-Beet) and complete with a hard feed designed for a particular purpose. This concept covers the entire spectrum of breed, size and activity and winter can be regarded as an activity in nutritional terms. So winter can be planned into your feeding regime, keeping it simple: Forage: hay, a little bit of grazing or haylage. Fibre: Speedi-Beet or Fibre-Beet, levels adjusted to weather conditions. Feed: A supplement or balancer, such as Baileys Performance Balancer, or Outshine oil supplement, to “round off the edges”. That way your horse will come out of winter – whenever that will be – in prime condition.

What to Feed this Winter
As we head into winter the likelihood is that our horses will spend longer periods of time in their stables, so it is a good time to take a look at any supplements you may need to feed this the winter. Remember to adjust your horse’s feed depending upon his workload and if you need any advice all of the companies mentioned have wonderful helplines.
Complete Feeds from Mollichaff The Mollichaff Complete range offers three fibre-based complete feeds: Mollichaff HoofKind Complete for horses and ponies prone to laminitis; Mollichaff Calmer Complete for nervous or excitable horses and ponies; and Mollichaff Condition Complete for encouraging weight gain and condition. When fed at the recommended amounts, these complete feeds can be used as the sole bucket feed as they each contain a broad spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement and only require good quality forage to be fed alongside. Being fibre-based feeds rather than cereal-based, they are a much more natural way of feeding. A fibre-based feed will weigh a lot less than cereal and so the recommended feeding amounts may seem like a lot, but it’s important to ensure your horse or pony is getting the correct amount in order for him to get all the vitamins and minerals he requires. Because the feed is fibre-based it takes longer to eat and more chewing is required, which is good as the horse is a natural ‘trickle’ feeder. By stimulating the production of saliva and slowing down the passage of food throughout the gut, Mollichaff can help to promote good digestion and will satisfy a stabled horse’s psychological need to chew, requiring up to 8,000 chews per kilo to eat compared to as few as 1,200 for concentrates. www.horsehage.co.uk
SUPPLEMENTS FOR WINTER Horslyx Balancers Horslyx are thrilled to announce the re-launch of their hugely successful Horslyx Balancer range, featuring new improved formulations for your horse. The updated product formulations now include Linseed Oil, which can improve skin and coat conditions, plus a host of other benefits of Omega-3 oils. A horse’s natural diet can be low in Omega-3 so your equine may need an additional source to provide these essential fatty acids for optimum health. Horslyx have also increased the level of Biotin to 12 mg/kg for even better hoof health across all ranges and the Horslyx Garlic and Original Balancer’s also have an increase of Vitamin E for improved immune support. Therefore, by using a Horslyx Balancer your equine will get even better nutritional support than before. Used and trusted by horse owners around the world, Horslyx has been making its mark on the equestrian scene since 1997. As a balancer, it is supplied in a palatable lick, containing an optimum level of vitamins, minerals and trace elements all in one tub. The free access lick promotes a natural trickle feeding pattern that allows the horse to self-regulate and consume Horslyx as and when it is needed. This leads to better digestion, less stress and a happier, healthier horse, as well as being a cost effective feed for owners. Alongside the updated formulations the packaging has also been given an original fresh look putting more focus onto the ‘balancer’ element of the product. By re-launching the product Horslyx are able to educate people on how it performs as a balancer, ensuring their horses are getting everything they need to perform at their best. Horslyx are also pleased to reveal a new mobile friendly website, which launched on the 1st September and with the new packaging there will also be an exciting ‘golden ticket’ competition for customers to take part in. Look out for more information on the website. www.horslyx.com

KM Elite Ultimate Oil Ultimate Oil is the next generation in oil supplementation. Ultimate Oil is a blend of high quality oils providing more than 190 bioactive nutrients including healthy ratios of Omegas 3, 6, 9 and rare Omega 7 - nourishing the body with essential fatty acids, minerals, plant sterols, antioxidants, amino acids, anti-viral and antibacterial nutrients and vitamins including Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, B15, C, E, K. All the oils in KM Elite Ultimate Oils are of the highest quality, easily biologically absorbed by your horse and are included at specific levels for specific reasons, so they work together, creating a synergetic effect for the total health and well-being of your horse. One of these effects is the balance and ratios of essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. It is important to remember that horses need a balance of both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids for optimal health and performance. It isn’t necessarily so that one is better than the other - they simply have different roles in the body and must be in balance with each other for optimal health and body function. www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

horsey other half The Horsey Other Half - Keith Bassi Keith Bassi was well aware of his wife Marnie’s equestrian interests – everyone in the Tunbridge Wells area knows Marnie after all! In between his many support roles within the team (including waste disposal manager, photographer and chairman of the support club) he helps lighten the load for Marnie and family. Name: Keith Bassi Home-town: Brenchley, Kent
Rohan Cadney-Moon jumping Diba
Occupation: Utility Warehouse
Distributor
Wife’s name: Marnie Off-spring: Step-father to Marnie’s three
children, Callum, Khia and Rohan
When and where did you meet? In 2009, we had known each other for a while through friends (I wasn’t horsey so didn’t see each other that often). Then we bumped into each other at Davinchi’s night club when we were both very merry! When did you realise your wife liked horses? I knew. Everyone knows Marnie.
And when I was a part time firefighter we rescued one of her horses from a hedge!
Do You Ride Yourself? No
Khia CadneyMoon jumping Cooley Legaland
Keith Bassi pictured with Diba
Khia CadneyMoon travelled around the world grooming for Mark Todd
Favourite Horse? Dibba How do you support your wife with her horses? I’ve tried to make
Marnie’s life easier and simpler by doing maintenance, shuffling the proverbial and getting the proverbial removed, so she has more time for us.
Callum Cadney-Moon with Diba
What’s the best thing about horses?
They keep Marnie busy so I can play lots of golf.
What’s the worst thing about horses?
They produce a lot of the proverbial!
Do you go to shows or competitions and if you do what sustains you through the day? Yes, I like to support
Marnie and the girls (Rohan and Khia Cadney-Moon). I keep out the way going on a walkabout to find where the food and the bar are. I take pictures and videos too while I talk to other sufferers!
Marnie Bassi with her daughter Rohan Cadney-Moon and Diba
Diba ridden by Rohan Cadney Moon
Do you have any hobbies? Golf, home
life and my business.
Most confusing thing you’ve ever heard her say about a horse? How
Marnie treats them better than humans has caused some confusion.
What advice would you offer to anyone about to marry a woman who owns a horse? Good Luck! It’s
great as long as you have plenty of your own interests (take up golf!) and watch out a horsey woman can turn every conversation into one about the donkey’s… Sorry I mean horses!
Each issue we will be featuring a ‘Horsey Other Half’, if you know the perfect person email alex@localrider.co.uk

Equestrian Country Home Insurance ◆
Bespoke insurance that covers the extras. The right cover at the right price from SEIB. SEIB know about horses and we know about keeping them at home. High net worth or a cottage with a little paddock we can help and exceptional levels of cover included with no extra to pay. We understand the risks, the liabilities and the costs and have put together the complete package for anyone that keeps their horses at home. The policy covers the buildings, contents and that includes the yard with all the equipment required for keeping horses, tack saddlery and feed. The liability cover is comprehensive as you would expect from SEIB, cover for up to 10 of your own horses and a few liveries can also be accommodated. Employer’s liability is available for any grooms or other employees. Many yards now have a few other resident animals such as pigs, llamas and chickens so liability cover can be included.
Cover is automatically included for trailers, including horse trailers up to £5K and quad bikes up to £10K, higher values can be added if required. House sitters will be covered while looking after pets and yards while the owner is away or on holiday.
We have worked hard to put together a superior package with a very good insurer and superb new terms so if you have a home with stables and want to save money please give us a call.
