Welcome

here has been so much fantastic news, results and pictures to squeeze into this issue, including our feature show report, Surrey County. This compact one day show is held at Stoke Park in Guildford, where the three rings of equestrian events are all quite close together, so it is easy to keep an eye on most of the day’s events. Turn to page 32 to find out more. A few days before we went to print I caught up with Sussex-based Camilla Kruger, who in just under a month will be heading to Brazil with her stunning young horse, Biarritz II, to compete in the Olympic Games. Representing her home country of Zimbabwe, Camilla will be the first ever equestrian athlete to represent the nation. Her heart might still be in Zimbabwe, but Camilla has grown up in Sussex since she was sixyears-old, in fact not far from Localrider HQ. One of our local favourites we wish There are lots of pictures of our regular contributor her and Sam The Man, as Biarritz is Alex Kelly throughout the magazine, but we more affectionately known lots and lots particularly like this one of her showing Jane Townshend’s Classictop Stud Raritat at the South of of luck. See page 10 to read more.

England Show, where she stood Cuddy Champion.

Lots of Prizes We have some fantastic prizes to be won in this issue, including an Arc Equine Kit, courtesy of Camilla’s sponsors. Other goodies include Breyer models of Valegro, Mollichaff Calmer, SSG Hybrid Gloves, Equerry High Fibre Cubes, Equisafety Air Waistcoats, as well as copies of Johanna Sharpe’s fun book, ‘The Perils and Pitfalls of Horse Ownership.” All of these competitions can be entered by completing the entry form on page 48. There will be more competitions, gifts and goodies to be won on the Localrider stand at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead. Our stand has moved slightly to the other side of the large screen, but we are still approximately half way down the open side of the International Arena, so please come and say hello if you are visiting. There are even more opportunities for you to call by and say hello this year, as the tickets on page 41 are valid for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Each ticket allows two people entry on one day. This summer we will be sharing more of our show reports online at www.localrider.co.uk, so keep an eye on the website, as we aim to keep it fresh and up to date with local news and useful information. And remember to keep us posted with what you are up to this summer. Have fun!

alegro and rider Charlotte Dujardin are the only pair in history to hold concurrent championship titles at the Olympics (london 2012), World (Normandy 2014), European (Denmark 2013 and aachen 2015) and be World Cup champions (lyon 2014 and las Vegas 2015) - they are the most dominant competitors in dressage history! Valegro’s gold medal rush at london 2012 enraptured millions and spawned a new name for dressage - horse dancing. Valegro is a 13-year-old 16.2hh Dutch Warmblood gelding, sired by Negro. Nicknamed Blueberry, he is owned by Carl Hester in partnership with Roly luard. Breyer’s Valegro is shown performing the elegant pirouette, and comes with a small base. We have three models to give away. For your chance to win one, complete the entry form on page 48. www.dkl.co.uk

Clicker Foundation Course Would you like to improve communication, connection, performance, rapport and motivation with your horse? you can discover all this and more at the Clicker Foundation Course being run by Becky Chapman at Russells Equestrian Centre in Southampton (SO34 3HQ) on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th august. Becky’s training is based on Jaak Panksepp’s book, “The archaeology of the Mind”, which is based on the seven emotional systems found in most mammalian brains. The course runs over two days and participants are provided with extensive handouts as part of their course fee. To find out more call 023 8047 3693 or visit www.russellsec.com

Natural goodness Aloeride is a naturally organic 100% aloe vera equine supplement, which uses not only human grade aloe vera, but aloe vera from the most nutrient-dense species grown under optimal, organic conditions and with strict unrivalled quality controls. Each daily sachet offers the equivalent of 440mL, which is a generous dosage for an adult horse. Aloeride has also been tested by an accredited Newmarket laboratory and is proven not to contain any synthetic compounds. www.aloeride.com

Lungeing the leisure horse lungeing helps to coordinate your horse’s body, allowing him to find his natural balance without the weight and pressure of a rider. lungeing aims to encourage the horse to stretch across the back and engage his hind quarters whilst moving freely. Training aids can encourage softness and stretching whilst enhancing the outline and improving balance and paces. good aids, like the Equiami lunge aid, don’t fix or restrain but encourage engagement of the hindquarters, lightness of the forehand and core strength. a busy summer can be the opportunity you needed to try lungeing once or twice a week. If you make it a regular part of your routine you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements you can make and the time you can save. www.equiami.com

Heroes of a different kind July the 1st marks 100 years since the Battle of the Somme, one of World War One’s most significant events, in which more than one million men were wounded or killed. as we pause this summer to remember those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice on the Somme battlefields, a new book takes a look at how it wasn’t just soldiers who ‘fought’ in the First World War and why animals also played an important role. Most people are familiar with the use of horses and their often heroic actions in the First World War, but what about camels, monkeys, canaries and even the mighty elephant? From mascots to messengers, animals played a hugely important role in almost every aspect of wartime life and in this wonderfully illustrated book you learn about how they were trained and used and hear some of their incredible individual stories. The book also goes beyond the battlefield and explores the role pets played in the war, and the plight of animals on farms, zoos and in the street. The result is a wonderful collection of stories that will shock, delight and move you in equal measure. Animals in the First World War, by Peter Street, is available from The Royal British Legion’s online store, The Poppy Shop, at www.poppyshop.org.uk for just £6, where you’ll also find a host of other products commemorating the Battle of the Somme. all proceeds raised from the sale of products on The Poppy Shop go directly to The Royal British legion and the important work they do in providing care and support to all members of the British armed Forces and their families. Localrider says: This is a great little book full of interesting information and rare photos.

Friendly Practical Feed Advice Baileys Horse Feeds have always prided themselves on giving sound practical feeding advice to all kinds of horse owners, either via their telephone helpline or through their team of Regional Feed Advisors. Sometimes, no matter how much internet research you do or how many leaflets you pick up in the feed store, it can be hard to decide just which feed is best for your horse. That’s when a trained eye and an understanding approach can really help so you can talk through your options with someone who understands equine nutrition, is knowledgeable about their own and other feeds in the marketplace and also appreciates what it’s like to juggle horse ownership with the rest of your busy life. Helen Gordon is Baileys’ Feed Advisor for the Localrider region. Point-to-point jockey turned amateur event rider and working mum, Helen can chat through your feeding queries on the phone or come and visit you to discuss your horse in person. She won’t advocate change for the sake of it but she will help you find a practical way to provide your horse with optimum nutrition, whatever your requirements. Call Helen direct, on 07710 306929, Baileys nutritionists, on 01371 850247 or visit www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk for information, advice and details of Regional Feed Advisors throughout the country.

The book is written and beautifully illustrated by Johanna Sharpe, owner of the Rein and Shine Equestrian Centre in Braydon. It is currently the number one bestseller on amazon in all its categories. How Hoof Proof are your feet? Has your horse made a good impression you? If not, you are one of the lucky ones. Of all accidents at the stables foot injuries are by far the most common. It all happens in a flash of a second, often resulting in, at best a bruise and at worst, broken toes. yet wearing properly constructed boots with toe protection would eliminate most of these risks. Boots made to the correct safety standards can withstand a compression in excess of 1000 kilo which is more than the weight of any horse. Feel safe and comfortable too with Equitector boots, fitted with steel toe caps as standard. www.equitector.com

Dame Judi Dench at East Park RDA In between her hectic filming engagements, Dame Judi Dench found time to visit the local, young riders of East Park Riding for the Disabled Group and open their recently completed building extension at Little Brook Equestrian, Whitechapel. She was also joined by East Grinstead’s new Mayor, Cllr Bob Mainstone. The sun shone brightly for the event and after watching the children enjoying their lesson, Dame Judi cut a ribbon that officially opened the much needed block of new stables, disabled toilet facilities and classrooms which will allow the RDA participants to learn more about horse management during their visits. “We’re so fortunate to have Dame Judi as our patron,” said Sally Anne O’Neill who runs the group. “She’s always so generous with her precious time and it means such a lot to the children and volunteers to meet her.” During her visit, Dame Judi also took the opportunity to see her beloved ex-racehorse, Smokey Oakey, which is being re-trained as a possible Paralympic mount.

Veteran Dazzle is Blooming with Condition Shelly Smart’s grey gelding, Dazzle, looks a picture of health at the grand old age of 27. Based in Berkshire, Shelly has owned Daz for four years and they share a very special bond. Daz was also the guest of honour at Shelly’s wedding back in 2013 and they have enjoyed dressage, show jumping and cross country in their time together. Shelly Said: “Daz is now semi-retired and only lightly ridden in the school and he still enjoys hacking out. I have been feeding TopSpec since the day I bought Daz. Now, well into his veteran years, every six months the vet gives Daz the all clear and always comments on his condition. Daz is also barefoot and has been for the past two and a half years. His feet are as hard as rock and he has never had a day’s problem! In September he was diagnosed with Cushing’s and over the winter he lost a lot of weight. at 27 years of age we couldn’t afford for him to lose any more weight so we changed Daz from his regular TopSpec lite Feed Balancer to TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer. again I have seen a great change in him with the weight creeping back on. Daz is an amazing pony and means the world to me. He jogs to and from the field every day and often thinks he’s still a stallion. He definitely looks and feels good and to be praised on his condition makes me so proud. Thank you TopSpec, there really isn’t any compromise when it comes to my boy.” www.topspec.com

What Does a Herdbound Horse Value? Words by Pat Parelli

W

e’ve all encountered herdbound horses from time to time, and it can be a frustrating experience. As humans, we tend to take it a little personally when a horse decides he’d rather stay with his herd than hang out with us. Anger can creep in – “Why is that horse so darn stubborn?” – and sometimes even selfdoubt, as in, “What am I doing wrong? Does my horse not trust me?” Sound familiar? I imagine there are plenty of you reading this and nodding your heads in agreement. Before we get into strategies for overcoming herdbound tendencies, it’s important to understand why horses can become herdbound. Let’s never forget that, in addition to being prey animals, horses are herd animals. They value safety above all else (more on that in a bit). This is part of their DNA; they seek safety, and to them, the herd equals safety. Horses are also a precocial species, meaning that they are full-faculty learners at birth. One of the first things they learn to do is identify not only their mother, but the herd as well. It’s for this reason that proper foal imprinting can be so effective. If we imprint correctly, it can lead a young horse to perceive us as part of the herd as well.

Horse Values

When we talk about a horse “valuing” safety, what does that mean? Well, simply put, it means that if a horse doesn’t feel safe, he’s not going to be interested in doing much with you. Here are the four main things that horses value: ➤ ➤ ➤ ➤

Safety Comfort Play Food & Procreation

The values tend to follow that order as well. Now, that doesn’t mean that some horses don’t have stronger play drives than others, or that food motivation can vary from horse to horse. Think of it this way: Until a horse feels safe, he isn’t likely to do anything – relax, sleep, eat, etc. If he’s in the pasture and he senses danger, you can be sure that that’s going to be his focus until he’s sure it’s gone. Once he feels safe, he can begin to feel comfortable. Only when he’s safe and comfortable will he play. This means both frolicking and herd dominance games, which dictate… food! When he gets to eat, how much he gets to eat, and who needs to eat before it’s his turn. What does this have to do with herdbound horses? A horse is herdbound when he equates the herd with safety so

strongly that the idea of leaving the herd makes him uncomfortable. Put yourself in your horse’s shoes, so to speak. Let’s say you want to go out for a nice, leisurely trail ride. To you, that’s not stressful at all. But to a herdbound horse, he’s being taken away from his herd (his safety zone), loaded into a metal cage on wheels, and unloaded in a foreign environment. It’s no surprise that he’d rather be with his herd.

So how do we overcome this tendency?

First, we need to demonstrate to the horse that you – yes, you – are the leader, and that you will keep him safe. Think of it in terms of bond. It’s in the horse’s nature to bond and synchronize mentally, emotionally and physically with his herd. Specifically with the herd leader. It’s up to you to prove that you’re the herd leader. That’s where playing, and winning, the Seven Games comes in. A leader shows that they have a plan. When you’re playing the Seven Games, don’t just play them for the sake of playing them. Demonstrate your leadership qualities by being progressive and preparing your horse. If you’re playing the same version of the Friendly Game that you were playing five months ago, you aren’t being progressive, and you aren’t proving to your horse that you have a plan. Incorporating patterns is a great way to demonstrate your skill, your creativity, and your leadership capabilities. You learn to be particular and purposeful – like a true leader. Horses respond to that. Whenever you’re playing with your horse, both on the ground and in the saddle, focus on getting your horse to synchronize with you. The more he bonds with you as he would his herd leader, the more he will overcome his innate selfpreservation tendencies (as in, “I’m only safe

when I’m surrounded by my mother and my herd. I need to go there now.”), which is the first step to overcoming herdbound behaviour. Think of it this way: you need to become such a good leader that your horse chooses to leave the herd for you.

Try not to get frustrated

Finally, try not to get frustrated when your horse would rather huddle with his herd. Although it may not seem like it, a horse with herdbound tendencies can actually be a big positive for you. Yes, really. After all, if your horse seems to place a lot of importance on bond and safety, it just presents you with a great opportunity to develop and hone your leadership skills. Plenty of horses can get along just fine without the herd, and while that makes herdbound behaviour a non-issue, it can also indicate that it’ll take much, much more work on your part to convince that horse to bond with you. Herdbound horses can be a blessing in disguise if you know how to truly bring out the best in them. You’ve often heard me say that “there’s nothing you can’t do when your horse becomes a part of you.” This is a prime example of that philosophy. With a herdbound horse, it’s up to us to win the Seven Games, become a leader, and encourage the horse to develop a strong bond – true unity – with us. Once that happens, he truly will be a part of you. For further information contact the Parelli UK team on 0800 0234 813 or visit http://landing.parelli.com/savvy/

he location of your arena is important. You need somewhere with good access for your horses, i.e. near the stables, and also for the wagons to deliver the materials, it will be more economical if you can take artic vehicles on to your property. However, before you do anything you need to obtain planning permission to build an arena and I suggest you contact your local planning department to discuss this with them. Ideally the arena will be built on naturally well-draining land, however this isn’t always an option, Installation of so if your land is very wet and We asked Jocelyn Riley, Managing Director of Equestrian Turfloat™ fibres poor draining, you will need more to an existing Direct Surfaces, for her views on arena construction extensive drainage, something to sand arena and maintenance. Ground Rules for Construction

Maintaining Arena Performance

The after-care and maintenance of your equine arena is extremely important to ensure a level, compact and even surface and to enhance the performance and longevity of your investment. It will also lower the risk of bone and joint related injuries in horses. The correct maintenance for your arena surface will vary depending on the material used, weather, type and amount of use along with budget for maintenance. How often an arena surface is used determines the frequency of its maintenance, but irrespective of whether you use it once a month or twice a day, it is a vital task. Over time, surfaces can become uneven and loose, or even hard and compact, and this has the potential for major health implications for your horse, if arena maintenance is not carried out.

Synthetic surfaces

For quick and easy maintenance you can simply use a Junior Harrow pulled by small tractor or a quad bike to level your arena. How often this needs doing will depend on how much the arena is used. A harrow which has passive tines on one side and aggressive tines on the other allows for maintenance to be varied depending on the needs of the surface. If you don’t have the budget to buy fancy equipment and machinery a simple hand rake will do the job. This will help to level any tracks or holes and can be used to rake the surface away from the sides of the arena where it is most likely to build up. However, there is a down side to doing the job by hand, you spend more time raking the surface than you actually spend riding on it.

Surface Fibres

Maintaining your arena may also mean that you need to rejuvenate the existing surface. Over time surfaces can become compact and hard and will start to hold more water, using a rotivator can help break up the compaction and aerate the surface. On the other hand surfaces which are deep and loose would benefit

Sand and Rubber Surfaces

Although the market place for equestrian surfaces has advanced from traditional sand and rubber arenas many people still use these kinds of surfaces and maintenance is still a must. For these types of surfaces a simple flat back leveller which can be pulled around the arena similar to a harrow will suit. Again if you choose, a large rake can be used to carry out the same job. Surfaces will need levelling over time especially around the edges where tracks start to form, some more often than others depending on how much it is used. All surfaces should regularly have droppings removed and any weeds pulled; the sooner you can do it the easier it is to stay on top of it. Tried&Tested

Swat that fly...

With fly season in full swing we have been testing a range of rugs, masks and fly repellents, which will hopefully help keep your horse feeling more comfortable this summer.

WeatherBeeta Ripshield Plus Combo Mark Todd Showerproof Multi-Purpose Rug This handy lightweight sheet is manufactured in 600 denier showerproof and breathable fabric along the back, with mesh sides and lining. The rug can be used for turnout on those unpredictable summer days as well as being ideal for use at shows and events. Matching neck cover is sold separately. Colour: Navy Sizes: 5’6” to 7’0” RRP: £62.99 (neck cover £26.50) www.wefi.co.uk

Made from soft, durable Ripstop polyester mesh, which has a cross hatch weave to help control and limit tears. Perfect if you have a rug wrecker. It has a combo neck and full wrap tail flap, with traditional side gusset for ease of movement. Plus adjustable front twin chest straps, low cross surcingles and adjustable removable web/elastic leg straps. Colours: Blue/Pink and White/Navy/Grey Sizes: 4’0” to 7’3” RRP: £69.99 www.weatherbeeta.co.uk LR Comment:

LR Comment: I like this rug as it is extremely lightweight, versatile and a great fit. It has been perfect this summer when the weather has been so changeable.

Made from an amazing fabric, at first it looks like it is a solid fabric, but it is a robust mesh. It is the one of the most sturdy fly rugs I have ever seen. We tested the blue/pink colourway which is fun and attractive too.

Pessoa Rain & Fly Sheet

KM Elite Fleece Fly Mask

New for Summer 2016. the Pessoa Rain and Fly Rug has a fully integrated full neck. Perfect for those showery spring and summer days, it combines the benefits of a 600 denier lightweight turnout with a fly rug. This rug will keep your horse cool, dry and free from flies.

KM Elite Fleece Fly Mask comes with a detachable nose. This smart black fly mask has black fleece lining and softer mesh over the poll, under the chin, and over the nose for extra comfort. Recent research has shown that black material keeps your body cooler in heat as it absorbs the heat from the body - rather than white which insulates and reflects heat back onto yourself. The mesh provides 50% UV Protection and unrestricted visibility. It has a double locking, robust velcro strap for security.

Colour: Navy and white Sizes: 5’6 to 7’0 RRP: £69.00 www.gfsriding.co.uk

Sizes: Small to XLarge RRP: £16.99 www.kmeliteproducts.co.uk

LR Comment: This has been a brilliant rug to use this year, as on cooler days and those when it has rained I know the areas along my horse’s back, where chills can set in have been protected. The 600 denier outer has a nylon lining, meaning it doesn’t rub the horse’s mane or withers.

WeatherBeeta Softmesh Fly Mask

LR Comment: This is a brilliant fly mask, which is designed to prevent the mask from pulling or touching the sensitive areas of the face. It is great that it has a detachable nose flap, as some horses get really irritated by the flies around their nose. It also means added UV protection for white noses.

Absorbine UltraShield

Colours: Smoke/Lavender and Silver/Navy/White Sizes: Pony to Full RRP: £12.99 www.weatherbeeta.co.uk

UltraShield is the ultimate insecticide for use around horses to protect against irritating and biting insects. It contains active ingredients Permethrin and Pyrethrin, providing instant “knock-down” when insects come into contact with it, as well as a long lasting protective “shield”. The product offers all-round protection in equestrian premises, stables and barns, and also in dog sleeping quarters.

LR Comment:

RRP: £24.85 www.absorbine.co.uk

It has a soft lightweight mesh outer, with adjustable touch tape closures.

The fly mask is made from a really soft yet durable fabric. It has one large Velcro strap, which is easy to adjust and very secure. The mesh provides 60% UV block.

LR Comment: I have used Absorbine Ultrashield for a number of years and it does what it says. It is particularly good if you have a sudden infestation. It is the product we keep handy all summer.

NAF DEET Power Performance Fly Spray and Gel NAF Off Deet provides powerful, long lasting defence against flies, horse flies and insect menace for all day protection. A high specification equine solution based on DEET, probably the best known and most widely tested insect repellent in the world. NAF OFF Deet Power Performance is the serious choice for insect control around horses and ponies this summer. RRP: Gel - £15.99 / Spray - £16.99 www.naf-equine.eu/uk LR Comment: NAF Off Deet is a really powerful fly repellent, which appears to remain effective all day. The gel is useful for applying to the face and areas you want to make sure are well covered.

Equine America Fly-Repel Gel and Spray This natural spray is specially formulated for horses, ponies and camelids (camels). It provides superior natural protection from troublesome biting flies and so can help to prevent the diseases they carry. Fly-Repel is an essential horse care product for long lasting fly deterrence. For use only as an insect repellent. RRP: 750ml spray £12.99 and 500ml gel £12.60 www.equine-america.co.uk LR Comment: We tested the gel, which is perfect for applying to areas you really want to make sure are covered and is especially good if you have a horse who dislikes being sprayed. I also like using the gel when I am riding, because if there are areas the flies are still landing once I am tacked up, I can put a bit more on.

Nettex Fly Repellent Nettex Fly Repellent Standard: This D.E.E.T based spray contains added moisturisers and conditioners to reduce evaporation and therefore provide longer-lasting protection from flies, and one application can last up to 24 hours. RRP: £11.25 for 500ml Nettex Fly Repellent Advanced: Is particularly useful for horses and ponies that are kept near ponds, streams and waterways, where fly populations are much higher. This D.E.E.T based high strength formula contains added moisturisers and conditioners which reduce evaporation and because of this, just one application can give your horse complete fly protection for up to 72 hours. RRP: £14.99 for 500ml Nettex Fly Repellent Wipes: The wipes are perfect for horses and ponies that object to being sprayed. What’s more, they can be used around sensitive areas, such as the eyes, nose, ears, muzzle, dock, sheath and teats, and are perfect for carrying in the lorry for use at shows. RRP: £7.50 for a pack of 50 wipes www.nettexequine.com LR Comment: I have always found Nettex Fly Repellent to be extremely effective, particularly in years when the flies are being particularly determined. The wipes are great for any occasion, we always have some in the groom’s basket for shows.

Time to travel

FEATURE

Equestrian vacations offer many benefits, from improving your riding skills and making new friends, to developing fitness and challenging your own boundaries. If you are planning a trip this year, you may like to check out our frequently asked questions.

Can my non-horsey partner come?

There are now lots of horsey venues that cater to couples or friends, whereby one partner rides, and one doesn’t. Chose a single-base trip, as opposed to a base-to-base ride where your luggage is taken to different locations. Unless you are on a long trek-based holiday, it is likely that you will only ride for up to three hours a day - plenty of time for your partner to explore the area or just rest and read, while you ride. Castle Leslie Estate’s one night, Sparkling Summer Special is a very nice overnight trip for couples - it includes Sparkling Pink Prosecco, Summer Inspired Chocolates, the venue’s self professed Best Breakfast in Ireland, and a €25 estate voucher to use on Afternoon Tea for two, or the Table D’Hote Dinner for two at the Snaffles Restaurant. The cost is from £67 per adult for the overnight stay. Guests can then add on riding tuition as required, with a 45 minute private lesson costing £40, and a one hour hack costing £32.

Words by Jenny Richardson of Castle Leslie Estate

You could learn a new skill on a riding trip.

What do I pack?

This very much depends on whether you’re on a single-base trip, e.g. a hotel with a training centre, or a base-to-base ride, where you ride to different locations each night and your luggage is transferred. For the latter, pack very lightly. It is imperative to check the projected weather forecast, and pack accordingly. For a week in a warm location, you will probably just need two pairs of jodhpurs, three tops with collars to protect from the sun, a waterproof coat, your riding hat and any other pieces of equipment like a seat saver and body protector. Ladies: remember your sports bra. Additions like sun cream, camera and sunglasses are also useful if the weather will be warm. For a single-base trip, such as those offered at Ireland’s Castle Leslie Estate, you can take more luggage, and include something for smarter evening meals. Generally for footwear, short boots with gaiters work well on riding trips, as they can double up as your travelling footwear, and will hopefully be comfortable. You can then pack a pair of smart flip flops or light shoes for evenings.

The Sparkling Summer Special is a nice treat for couples.

How do I choose a trip?

Choose a trip that matches your riding experience. If you exaggerate your level of riding skills, you will either hold the other riders back, or put yourself in danger. Work out what appeals to you. Truly adventurous rides may actually be very slow, due to difficult terrain, while beach rides can be fast and furious.

What if I am not good enough?

There’s no such thing. There’s a riding holiday for every level including complete beginners - so it is all about doing your research. If you lack experience, join a holiday with lots of tuition. If you are an experienced rider who needs a confidence boost, look for a training venue that specialises in this area, so you’re not over-faced. Castle Leslie Estate’s ‘Get Back Your Confidence’ package - see www.castleleslie.com - is a five day holiday featuring three hours of daily lessons, culminating in a two hour estate ride, from £1,089 per person sharing. (Available from August onwards). Dublin and Belfast airports are very well served by all of the South East’s airports.

Managing Performance: The Team Approach

Words by Ed Lyall BVetMed, CertEM (Stud Med), MRCVS of the Arundel Equine Hospital

I

n previous articles I have talked about some of the things that we as vets do to manage horses for sport and improve their performance, but there is a team of people behind a successful sport horse and rider. The members of the equine management team are detailed below, and communication between all the team members is key to success. There will be a separate team dealing with the rider comprising of doctors, physios, nutritionists and even sports psychologists.

important as the horse wears that for longer. Saddles should be checked regularly throughout the season as horses change shape depending on the level of work they are in. It is not uncommon for saddles to cause back pain, when not fitted properly.

The Nutritionist

Horse owners are used to seeing their farrier every four or five weeks to re-shoe their horse. The input that the farrier has in the team is massive, there is an old adage “no foot, no horse” and this is quite right. Nowadays it is not just a case of shoeing the horse and putting stud holes in where applicable, vets and farriers work closely often discussing options for ways of shoeing horses based on the radiographic appearance of the feet. For example, the knowledge that a horse has a negative plantar sole plane in the back feet that needs adjusting, can only be accurately identified by radiography. With modern technology communication between vets and farriers is so much easier and quicker, with digital images of feet being e-mailed as soon as they have been taken. There are also so many options for types of shoes that a farrier has in the armoury to apply to the feet of problem horses.

Feeding horses nowadays is easier due to all the feed companies producing prescription diets that are complete and come in a bag, all we have to do is feed the right volume depending on the level of work the horse is doing, i.e. feeding by eye as the horse looses weight feed more or less if it is gaining weight. However, I don’t think it is quite that simple particularly when feeding top level competition horses. It is worth having a nutritionist to advise on diet, many of the feed companies have informative help lines or they may even send out a nutritionist to talk to you and see your requirements. What we need to remember is the basis of a good diet is the forage, having hay or haylage analysed is invaluable. Once this has been done the diet can be tailored to the specific requirements of the horse depending on it’s type and what it’s discipline is. The nutritionist will also give advice on the correct levels of supplementation, many horses are over supplemented which is not only costly but can also have disastrous consequences on the diet causing a loss of nutritional balance.

The Physiotherapist

The Trainer

The Farrier

The role of the physiotherapist is to keep the soft tissue structures of the horse loose and supple, removing muscle tension and reduction in range of movement thus allowing the horse to remain soft and pain free, to work to it’s maximum potential. Many riders will have the physio look at their horses as a routine every couple of weeks, sometimes horses are examined and treated prior to competition and again after competition. Horses do develop muscle tension in their necks and backs, very similar to the way we do, when there is a problem to do with the limbs. It is invaluable for the physio to work in conjunction with the vet when treating cases, there are many conditions that vets treat that result in issues in the muscles that the physios need to deal with to optimise performance. Horses left untreated can end up with stiffness due to reduction in the range of movement of muscle. There are many techniques applied by physiotherapists involving manipulation, massage, ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, electrostimulation, etc as well as giving advice on exercise programs for the rider to deal with specific problem areas.

The feedback that the trainer gives to the members of the equine management team is important. The trainer sees how the horse is moving and performing, often not every day which can be an advantage as any subtle changes the rider has not spotted due to their insidious onset may then be seen by the trainer.

The Arundel Equine Hospital

The Chiropractor

The role of the chiropractor is similar to that of the physiotherapist in that they can have a routine management role or deal with specific problems when they arise. The chiropractor tends to deal with the spine, so the neck and back, by manipulation. Again it is important that the chiropractor is informed as to the conditions the vet is dealing with and vice versa.

The Osteopath

The chiropractor and the osteopath have very similar modes of action, both basing therapy on manipulation, however the osteopath has a wider brief in that the therapeutic techniques are not limited to just the back and neck, as they are with the chiropractor, but to the limbs also where applicable.

The Sports Masseur

There has been a growing number of sports massage practitioners over the last few years. This technique can be invaluable for helping to maintain the wellbeing of the horse, again by attempting to relieve muscle spasm secondary to orthopaedic conditions. Many riders find that the massaging therapy has a very relaxing and calming affect on some horses, this can be of benefit for example with eventers that get highly strung prior to the dressage phase of competition.

The Saddler

It goes without saying that the fit of the various saddles used for competition is of paramount importance. It is not just however the competition saddles, the ones used for training are probably more

FEATURE Laura Renwick and Bintang II jumping at the Longines Global Champions Tour of London

If you hadn’t got into horse riding what job would you have done? I actually tried quite a few careers before I finally got serious about show jumping, including being an air hostess! My other dream job was to be a professional tennis player, although I don’t really get to play it very often.

Have you ever tried any other equine sports? I did when I was younger but not since being an adult. I wouldn’t dream of jumping the cross country fences the event riders jump – they are huge and uncompromising. At least show jumps fall down.

Which horse, past or present, would you have most liked to ride on? Based upon the horses I think would suit me and that I’d most enjoy riding, I’d have to say ‘Fit for Fun’ ridden by Luciana Deniz, or ‘Hickstead’ ridden by Eric Lamaze.

Which is your favourite show? I love Madrid as it is very traditional and the atmosphere there is incredible. It’s a very special occasion because of the huge public support and the footing is always excellent.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? ‘Never give up’ or to put it another way ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again’. My Nan always told me that and it has stuck; I think it is so useful in all areas of your life, not just when it comes to horses.

nI terview with Laura Renwick

What is your top tip for jumping a clear round? If only I knew I would have clear rounds all the time! Sometimes you do everything right and you still have a fence down.

Which young horse should we be keeping an eye out for?

Laura with Utrillo De Breve

Laura Renwick needs no introduction; she is the highest ranked GBR lady rider in the World FEI show jumping rankings and has amassed a number of championship wins. As of recently, she is also proudly sponsored by VioVet, one of the UK’s leading online equine retailers.

With a 40-strong yard of competition horses, youngsters and broodmares, it is essential that Laura has all the resources she needs to keep her top class horses in peak condition. For over a year now, Laura has relied on VioVet for all her important supplies, from wormers and supplements, to yard kit and even medication when needed. With the Longines Global Champions Tour at Cannes now behind her, VioVet caught up with Laura to find out a bit more about her amazing career…

I am super excited about my own young horses, which we have bred ourselves: Five-year-old Arkuga by Arko, out of my mare Beluga, Four-year-old Maverick by Diamant De Semilly, Five-year-old Burj by Billy Congo, and Shiraz by Vagabond.

What are your favourite bloodlines for a showjumper? I love French horses, in particular the Selle Francais breed and of course the stallions I have used to breed my horses, Arko, Diamant De Similly, Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve (sire of Bintang) and Vagabond.

Who has been the most influential person in your career? My husband John, as he is very supportive, which makes it all so much easier – not everyone’s husband would put up with this lifestyle. He is also my trainer and trains our apprentices and grooms. At shows he is the first person I look to for help and advice.

What has been your biggest win(s) to date? Winning the Queens Cup in 2009, the Foxhunter Final twice in 2010 and 2012, the Grand Prix in Madrid in 2013 and then London in 2015.

Where is the most unusual place you’ve ever competed? Miami, where the arena was set up on the beach only metres from the Atlantic Ocean. It was amazing and quite surreal.

What are you goals for 2016? I am currently ranked 38th in the world and I would love to be in the top 30.

he Pony Club team from Silvermere Equestrian Centre in Cobham, Surrey has won the Pony Club National Quiz. They qualified for the first time this year for the finals of the NFU Mutual Pony Club Quiz. 120 members from 19 Pony Club Branches and 11 Pony Club Centres from around the country gathered to compete against each other on Saturday 2nd April at Addington Equestrian Centre. The quiz consisted of eight rounds of questions based on the following topics: Round 1 – The Pony Club Round 2 – R ider, Tack & Turnout for Rallies, Competitions and Hunting Round 3 – Well Known Equestrian Venues in the United Kingdom Round 4 – The Numbers Game & Missing Words Round 5 – Practical Round Round 6 – P oints of the Horse (Juniors), & Know your Horse’s Ailments (Seniors) Round 7 – Picture Round Round 8 – All the Queen’s Horses Having been thrilled to qualify for the finals, winning was the icing on the cake for the Silvermere team of: Cadence Webley, 12, Kayleigh Lubin, 13, Maddie Skeldon, 14 and Georgia Stanton, 18. Silvermere Equestrian Centre’s Team Manager, Lara Lubin, said: “The effort the members put into this was out of this world; they studied morning, noon and night for weeks on end and their hard work has certainly paid off. It meant so much for our riding school just to qualify for the finals, and to then go and win it was so, so rewarding for us all.” Lara went on to thank her Yard Manager, Beth Hardy, for encouraging her to join the Pony Club Centre scheme and helping with the training of the quiz team. Lara continued: “The Pony Club Centre scheme has been fantastic for us and I would like to thank all of our members, even those who weren’t part of the team, as they provided much needed support.”

Choosing a cheekpiece! C

hoosing a bit can seem like a minefield - so it is best to bear in mind that the bit mouthpiece and the cheekpieces are separate entities, in that one mouthpiece will come in several cheekpiece styles. Once you have established the mouthpiece of the bit, then you have to establish which cheek piece would be suitable. This is dictated to by various things including the rider’s riding and competition discipline and their skill; many riders have several bridles utilising different bits, for the differing riding disciplines. To generalise, cheekpieces predominantly fall into two categories: snaffles and curbs. A snaffle bit is a non-leverage bit whereby the rein attaches directly to the mouthpiece, while a curb bit provides leverage with the rein attached to a lower shank; this is the piece of the bit that sits below the bit ring itself. Here, we showcase some of the best sellers at www.worldwidetack.com: The Loose ring cheekpiece allows the bit to move laterally through holes in the mouthpiece. The Loose Ring allows the bit to move It can help discourage the laterally through holes in the mouthpiece horse or pony from leaning on the bit. We have pictured the Bombers Equestrian Snaffle Loose Ring - this is perennially popular. (The mouthpiece is curved to distribute pressure more evenly over tongue and bars while the offset centre link reduces the nutcracker action and pressure points on the tongue.) The Eggbutt snaffle cheekpiece is attached solidly to the mouthpiece, and has swivel joints to minimise pinching. It gives The Eggbutt cheekpiece is attached a slightly more solid feel solidly to the mouthpiece against the side of the horse or pony’s face. We have pictured the Bombers Equestrian Happy Tongue Eggbutt, which prevents the bit being pulled through the mouth; the release is slower, and also introduces some poll pressure. (The Happy Tongue mouthpiece is curved and ported to give tongue relief.) The Pelham is a hybrid of a snaffle and curb cheekpiece - it has curb shanks, and works as a double bridle would, while eliminating the need for two bits. Curb chains are used The Pelham is a hybrid of a with these bits to put a limit snaffle and curb cheekpiece to the amount of pressure that will be placed on the horse or pony’s poll. We have pictured the Bombers Equestrian Buster Roller Polo Pelham, which has a 75mm shank, and is aimed at polo players. (The ‘Buster Roller’ mouthpiece pictured has a link in the middle shortened to 40mm, increasing bar and tongue pressure - this particular bit has a larger bit ring to allow for the polo running rein. This bit also comes with a 55mm shank). The Kimblewick has a D shaped ring attached to the mouthpiece, with two openings for rein attachment on the curved portion of the D. The two The Kimblewick has two openings rein openings allow for for rein attachment options on the amount of leverage put in place when the rein aids are used. We have pictured the Bombers Equestrian Blue Kimblewick; the mouthpiece pictured is ported, for tongue relief. Gags have a round ring with a small hole in the top and bottom, through which an over-cheek rein passes. The leverage action lifts the horse’s head upwards. We have pictured the Bombers Equestrian T Bar Buster Roller Gag, which has the same effect as the traditional Full Cheek or Fulmer (see below), in that it will prevent pinching

on the sides of the horse or pony’s mouth; however the shortened and extended pins above and below the bit are designed to avoid the tack Gags have a round cheekpiece ring with a being caught up during the small hole in the top and bottom, through game of polo. The T-Bar has which an over-cheek rein passes a Loose Ring fitting. (This bit is used exclusively for polo.) Other cheekpieces include the D-Ring, pictured at the top of the page, which provides a small amount of leverage; the Fulmer or Full Cheek, which has an arm extending above and below the ring that applies pressure laterally to the horse’s mouth for a stronger turning aid; and the Hanging Cheek, which uses pressure on the poll. Furthermore, individual bitting manufacturers are always creating their own hybrid bits that may ‘cross over’ or include two types of cheekpiece.

WORMING Targeted Worm Control Equine parasites to test or treat for; a veterinary approved programme for healthy adult horses

Working as a first opinion equine vet I see a wide and varied caseload. Every year this includes horses that are suffering from a severe worm burden. In some this is due to neglect or other underlying illnesses. More worryingly in others, these are horses with owners who believe that they are worming their horses appropriately and have measures in place to prevent worm related issues. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation and contradictory advice out there which can lead to confusion for the horse owner. That is a problem for the horse world in general but it is even more important at the individual horse level. Problems can arise from worming at the wrong times of year, not using the appropriate wormer, under-dosing, or overuse of a particular wormer leading to resistance so that the drugs we have are no longer effective against the parasites that are a threat to horse health.

How does parasite control fit into the bigger picture of a healthy horse? Parasite control should be high up on the list along with vaccinations, dental and hoof care when it comes to routine care of your horses. It can be easy to forget worming as it is generally a hidden issue until it becomes a problem. A horse suffering with a severe worm burden can go from an apparently healthy horse to a severely ill one in a very short space of time, hence the importance of a regular testing regime using worm egg counts and the saliva test for tapeworm.

What are the biggest challenges that horse owners face in managing worm control? The challenges are two fold; all the information that’s out there that can make the subject seem very confusing. What can you test for? How often to treat? Which chemical to choose? How about a combination wormer? What time of year is it? Which worms are you targeting? Worming regularly may make some people feel that they are safe and can’t possibly have a worm issue, however they are setting themselves up for a resistance problem and if their horse does become ill with worms, they will have limited treatment options in the future.

Worm egg counts Test every 3 months to target your horses red and roundworm control. £9.50 per test. Discounts for multiple horses, commercial rate for yards of +10 horses - ask for our FREE info pack!

What does worming responsibly mean and why is it important? Worming responsibly means only using a wormer when really necessary and at the appropriate time of year for the worms you are treating, using the right test at the appropriate time of year to check if your horse needs a wormer. Use routine worm egg counts to test for redworm and roundworm every three months and the tapeworm saliva test every six months to see if your horse is carrying worms. If the test results are low he doesn’t need a wormer. The one treatment he will need regardless is the winter dose to cover the possibility of encysted redworms which will not show up on a worm egg count. Worm once per year for these in the winter months with a moxidectin or five day course of fenbendazole (if you know you don’t have resistant worms).

Record Turnout for RDA’S South East Region’s

Dressage Qualifier at Hickstead Tuesday 24th May 2016 • Pictures by Zecora

T

he sun shone brightly for the Riding for the Disabled’s South East Region’s Dressage Qualifier which was held at Hickstead. During a fabulous day, nearly 80 RDA riders of all ages from 11 RDA groups across Kent, Surrey and East & West Sussex converged on Hickstead to show off their accuracy skills in dressage riding. And while the results were being collated, the numerous entries to the annual Arts & Crafts competition were judged by RDA enthusiasts Bob and Pip Sampson from Pyecombe’s Mid Sussex Group. There were 16 classes held across three arenas in all, of which eight were qualifying classes for the RDA National Championships at Hurtpury, Gloucestershire in July. Joanna Sale of RDA Regional sponsors, Cowan Architects, presented the prizes. Joanna said: “I watched these riders in a number of the classes and I really take my hat off to them as they all have such empathy with the horses. They’re all winners in my book.” A couple of annual trophies were presented to: Kerstin Paul of Cranleigh RDA, who won the cup for the Highest Senior Newcomer, and to 10-year-old Beanie Drew, who was delighted to win the

horse trophy for the highest score in the non-qualifier classes. Beanie, who was from Canterbury’s Cobbes Meadow Group, also won a book pack for being the highest scoring junior, which was kindly donated by Forelock Books which publishes ‘Horsey A Winning Arts & Crafts entry from Books for Horsey Children’. children at Sandhurst Group Cobbes Meadow RDA Group continued its winning streak with Gareth Bitchell and Timmy Leng both winning trophies for being the highest led senior. Leonora Hussey from Epsom RDA won a pewter tankard for being the highest qualifier. Sandhurst RDA group and Lorraine Mercer of Heron’s Ghyll (Whitesmith) RDA Driving Group were both winners in the Arts and Crafts Competition and their entries will now go to the Nationals Competition in Hartpury in July.

Summer Sizzlers! Celebrate summer in style with our top tips from Alison NyeWarden, MD of premium retailer Dressage Deluxe and style guru as she chats fashion for this season and her favourite pieces.

Alison says: “Summer is all about sunshine isn’t it? Well for those of us that live and ride in the UK, you need to be prepared for sudden showers and I just love this Pikeur Premium Oletta Waterproof Jacket (left). It’s the perfect lightweight cover-up for riding in wet weather this season and I love the little functional style details. The hood folds away neatly into the collar when not in use and with tapped seams it’s prepared for anything our great summer weather decides to throw at us. For when the sun does shine, I’m looking for technical properties in my clothing and the Equiline Melany Shirt (above right) combines style with comfort. This close fitting shirt is extremely comfortable and has been made from complex technical fabric to take away moisture from the skin, keeping you dry whilst you ride. Perfect as temperatures soar. My riding wardrobe always has a gilet or two in there and this season the Pikeur Olina Quilted Waistcoat (right) is great as a cover up for wearing in the warm-up or as a stylish layer for training. Also for ladies with a bust it is far more flattering than just wearing a T-shirt. Underwear is also a big consideration and I wouldn’t be out my Knix! These are lightweight, breathable and seamless knickers and they really do revolutionise your riding experience! No more VPL under your White competition breeches either. When it comes to breeches, I won’t wear anything else, but breeches with ‘Grip’ seats and the Equiline Amanda Full Grip Breeches (right) in the White version of these are one of my favourite styles of breeches. They have a four-way stretch silicon seat which offers great stickability in the saddle, without loss of freedom of movement. So, I can feel and look great in and out of the saddle at shows. The Samshield helmets are great for keeping cool, as they have an airflow system, which helps keep your head cool on the move. Genius! They also come with a range of bespoke options and one of my current favourites is the Samshield Shimmer Top Shadowmatt (right). Just imagine how gorgeous that looks in the sunshine! On the boot front, Petrie and DeNiro offer style in a huge variety of different colours and prints and with the revised British Dressage rule enabling dressage riders to wear bling on their boots, we are going to see plenty more requests from customers! I love these DeNiro Raffaello Brushed Black Boots (right), perfect for those riders who like a classic feel with a contemporary twist. Have a fantastic summer and enjoy looking and feeling great whatever the weather.” For more information visit www.dressagedeluxe.co.uk

Designed with comfort in mind, the Molly’s Aerocool fabric technology transports moisture away from the skin to the outer layers of the fabric where it dries faster, keeping you cool and comfortable.

Harpley Equestrian Cool Leg Wraps The original Cool Leg Wraps, used by professionals. Immerse in cold water for only 40 minutes and the internal crystals turn into a cooling gel which moulds to the leg giving comfortable, safe cool therapy and gentle compression and support. The Cool Leg Wraps are ideal to be used in the stable or when away from home after any competition, event or hunting. Apply to hot and tired legs or where cool treatment is needed for sprains, strains, swelling and to reduce heat. Easy to fasten with comfortable elasticated velcro straps. For best use, leave on for 20 minutes, remove and hang up. The evaporation process cools them and they can be reapplied for another 20 minutes, as desired. For extra cold treatment they can be soaked in iced water or placed in a plastic bag in the fridge. Where heat treatment is required they can be soaked in warm water and applied the same.

This 3 in 1 product provides optimum skin care whichever way you choose to use it on your horse. Either as a cold wash for a refreshing cleanse to lift sweat, a hot towel wash following clipping or for a deep clean, grease and dust from the coat, or applied directly to the skin in a concentrated form to address specific areas requiring attention. Every 1litre bottle of love the SKIN he’s in Skin Wash comes with a free NAF Deep Cleansing Towel. www.naf-equine.eu/uk LR Comment: This wash is brilliant, particularly if your horse has sensitive skin. I use it after exercise with cold water and on cooler days, just add hot water. Because my horse does have very sensitive skin I always give her a final rinse with Love the SKIN he’s in Skin Wash after I have given her a good shampoo, it just feels to me like it lifts any shampoo residue which is remaining.

What to feed this Summer FEED NEWS

The warm wet weather has ensured the grass has kept growing, so keep an eye on your horse’s waistline and if you are in any doubt seek advice. Depending on the amount of work your horse is doing, he may need a variety of additional feed and supplements. The temperature can make a big difference too and we hope the following information may be of use this summer.

Mollichaff HoofKind Complete Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is ideal for the good doer as it is a complete low energy, low starch, low sugar, high fibre feed in a bag. It contains a balanced blend of oat straw, alfalfa, fibre pellets, soya oil, vitamins, minerals, biotin, trace elements and antioxidants and when fed at the recommended levels, can be used as the sole bucket feed. Look out for the ‘Hoof Kind’ symbol on their products, this denotes they are low in sugar and starch and are suitable for all horses and ponies including laminitics. www.horsehage.co.uk

HorseHage High Fibre If your horses are out grazing during the day, additional forage, such as HorseHage High Fibre or Timothy can be given when they are brought in for the night. HorseHage is a dust free, high fibre forage and has a lower sugar compared to hay. www.horsehage.co.uk

Blue Chip Garliq Blue Chip Garliq is a superior form of concentrated Garlic which is well known for being a natural fly repellent, powerful antioxidant and respiratory supplement. It is in a liquid form which is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and encourages efficient feeding as every drop can be obtained from the easy to use, twin neck, one litre bottle which lasts over two months. www.bluechipfeed.com

British Horse Feeds Fibre-Beet or Speedi-Beet Dr Tom Shurlock of British Horse Feeds said: “Forage, whether grazed, or preserved, is still the best source of the majority of nutrients for the horse. What we have to do is recognise that it will change over the growing season and we should provide extra feed that both complements the fermentative pattern of grass, and evens out the variations in nutrients over the summer. Both Speedi-Beet and Fibre-Beet have such patterns. Both can be offered as a supplement to forage in variable amounts to offset changes in nutrient composition of the grass and still maintain the benefit of providing a high fibre diet. And when the moisture content of the grass drops over summer, both can be used to hydrate the diets. By planning to use a quality fibre source as a supplement, summer variation in grass quality can be overcome and the horse’s condition maintained.” www.britishhorsefeeds.com

TopSpec 14% Mix Looking to find a feed for your fussy feeder, struggling with maintaining weight? TopSpec 14% Mix is a very palatable mix, which is perfect for fussy eaters that reject low starch cubes but need additional feed alongside a feed balancer. 14% Mix is formulated utilising highly digestible fibre sources and cooked cereals to improve digestibility. It is designed to be added to a TopSpec feed balancer or supplement and therefore contains no added vitamins or trace-elements and is a blend of straight raw materials rather than a complete feed. 14% Mix has a high energy (calorie) level of 13MJ/kg, which, together with the protein, will promote condition and topline, and provide the energy for hard work. The formula maximises the use of highly digestible fibre sources and contains a good level of oil to help promote a shiny coat. www.topspec.com

Blue Chip Lami-light Blue Chip Lami-light is the low sugar, low starch Diet feed balancer perfect for horses and ponies prone to weight gain or laminitis in the summer. Lami-light contains all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients and oils required on a daily basis to maintain health, well-being and a glossy, gleaming coat as well as probiotics and complete hoof and respiratory supplements to ensure health from the inside out www.bluechipfeed.com

Alltech Lifeforce Focus Leisure and companion horses and ponies often spend the summer months happily grazing enjoying the freedom of living out 24/7, with little need for hard feed, as the grass will be more than meeting their energy requirements, but not necessarily providing essential vitamins and minerals. Lifeforce Focus from Alltech is specially designed for leisure and companion horses, or those that may spend more time grazing, helping to create a healthy digestive environment. Studies have shown that Lifeforce contains yeast products that optimise digestive health and address challenges related to body condition, a common problem among veteran horses and ponies. www.lifeforcehorse.co.uk

NAF PROCell NAF’s veterinary and nutritional specialists have developed PROCell as an appropriate and effective nutritional solution to help optimise horses’ performance levels. PROCell is iron rich and fortified with vitamins and minerals to maximise training and performance potential and has the added immune system support of yucca and echinacea. Feed NAF Five Star PROCell to maintain peak performance. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

FEED NEWS NAF In the Pink Senior

Cortaflex Ha Super Fenn Super Strength

NAF In the Pink Senior is specially formulated to meet all the nutritional requirements of the older horse and is designed to give him all the support he needs to stay active and feeling forever young. In the Pink Senior helps balance the diet and the digestive system, which enables the horse to maximise the value of his feed intake. It provides pre and probiotics for optimum support of the gut, and supplies all the vitamins and minerals required by the older horse for all round health. In the Pink Senior also supplies a unique combination of naturally sourced antioxidant ingredients to flush excess free radicals from the system, as well as providing nutrients to support joint health. Specially chosen herbs support a youthful spark. In the Pink Senior is recommended for all older horses and ponies, whether signs of age are obvious or not.

Cortaflex HA Super Strength is now available with the addition of Super Fenn a natural anti-inflammatory that contains Bromelain and Yucca. Specially formulated for competition horses or those with a high work load and for those with excessive wear and tear to their joints.

NAF Liquid Electro Lytes When horses work, or during hot weather, they regulate their body temperature by sweating. Sweating not only loses fluid as it evaporates, but also essential body salts, particularly sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Failure to replace these body salts (known as electrolytes) can result in fatigue. Electro Lytes is an easy to use liquid designed to replace the four essential body salts which may be lost through exercise, sweating or during hot weather. Simply add to feed or dissolve in drinking water. For horses in heavy work or during periods of extreme heat, feed the more concentrated Electro Salts. Always ensure a supply of clean fresh water is readily available. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

www.equine-america.co.uk

TOPSPEC Calmer TOPSPEC Calmer is designed to be fed to horses and ponies with anxious temperaments, particularly those that cannot cope with stressful situations such as showing, travelling and competing. Not all horses are anxious for the same reason so TopSpec Calmer has been developed with much more than a ‘single ingredient’ approach. It contains a pure protected yeast, MOS, B vitamins, magnesium, tryptophan and sepiolite clay, which all act in different ways to help calm and relax responsive horses. TopSpec Calmer is a palatable, caramel-flavoured, additive to be mixed into the feed. It can be fed daily to stressed or anxious horses or occasionally to help horses cope with stressful situations, for example, competitions, travelling and fireworks. www.topspec.com

Blue Chip Super Concentrated ULSA-COOL Balancer

As horses work and sweat they lose vital electrolytes and mineral salts. At low levels these can be replaced with Sodium Chloride (salt) but, if the horse is in medium to hard work and sweating on a daily basis, an electrolyte supplement must be provided. Without electrolytes, the horse will feel lethargic, and a continuation of this loss is highly detrimental to the horse’s health. Apple Lytes is a salt-based product which can be added to the feed on a daily basis. For high level competition and endurance events, Apple Lytes is also available in a handy syringe for instant replenishment of electrolytes. Electrolytes should not be fed to a dehydrated horse - always ensure water has been ingested first, and that the horse has recovered from exercise.

Always at the forefront of modern equine nutrition, Blue Chip has developed The Super Concentrated ULSACOOL Balancer to add to their new range of Calming, Senior and Daily Health Super Concentrated Balancers. These revolutionary feed balancers have proved extremely popular due to their highly specific formula which is easy to feed and also proving to be highly cost effective. The Super Concentrated ULSA-COOL Balancer has been specifically formulated to assist with maintenance of acid balance in the gut and the 100% natural, whole-cereal, molasses free formula incorporates AcidBal, an acid buffering agent comprised of Lithothamnion, which is derived from marine minerals and can help the natural pH balance of the gut by slowly releasing calcium, magnesium and silicon, over a prolonged period, enhancing the buffering effect it has on stomach acids. Also included is mint which has been used for centuries to aid digestion, and Beta-Glucans, natural polysaccharides that support the immune response and coat the lining of the stomach with a protective barrier, whilst slowing the passage of feed to keep the stomach fuller for longer. Like all the Blue Chip Super Concentrated Balancers, ULSA-COOL contains specifically tailored levels of all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your horse requires daily to maintain health and well-being, as well as pre and probiotics for efficient digestion and the dedicated hoof and respiratory supplements, SoundHoof and PrimoVento. Also, Blue Chip is the only company in the UK to include Nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, in their feed balancers, which are integral in immune support and maintaining a healthy digestive system.

Equine America Super So-Kalm Horses can experience nervousness and tension before exercise or competition causing them to misbehave or ‘wash out’. Super So-Kalm contains a premium grade Magnesium with L-Tryptophan, an essential amino acid associated with the production of serotonin, to calm and focus the horse. Fed daily, this can aid concentration and willingness to work, without removing the edge required for competition. Young horses also have a tendency to be highly strung and distracted, leading to training problems in the future. Feed young horses or ponies in their first season Super So-Kalm Plus to help them to relax and ensure that their new experiences are good experiences. Super So-Kalm Paste is a concentrated form for more rapid support. www.equine-america.co.uk

Supplements: What, why and when By Anna Welch BVSc, BSc, MRCVS. Veterinary Nutrition Director, TopSpec.

A

supplement is a product that is added to a horse’s feed in order to enhance the diet or balance deficiencies. It can be extremely challenging to formulate your own well-balanced ration from a variety of different supplements. Using an appropriate top specification multi-supplement, such as TopSpec All-in-One, will avoid the risk of oversupplementation and ensure the diet is balanced by supplying the optimal levels of micronutrients required, including a hoof supplement, vitamin E plus selenium for muscle-function and other antioxidant properties, a blood tonic, a bone supplement, digestive aids and an immunesystem booster. All of these micronutrients and specialised supplements can also be supplied by using an appropriate TopSpec Feed Balancer, e.g. TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer. More recently, there are feed balancers available which include substances previously only available in supplement form. For example, TopSpec Joint Feed Balancer, TopSpec Senior Feed Balancer and TopSpec Senior Lite Feed Balancer all contain the scientifically-recommended level of glucosamine (10g/500kg horse/day), providing a simple, yet well-balanced diet, which is very cost-effective for horses with compromised mobility. There are times however, when additional specific supplements/additives may be required:

Joint Supplements A separate supplement may be necessary when the appropriate specification of joint support cannot be achieved by using a pelleted balancer. High levels of MSM cannot be pelleted, therefore, in horses that require higher levels (and it is useful in some cases as a natural anti-inflammatory), an additive like TopSpec 10:10 Joint Support

(containing 10g glucosamine and 10g MSM per 500kg horse per day) should be used.

Hoof Supplements Biotin is a vitamin well known for its association with hoof quality. Research has found that a level of 3mg biotin per 100kg bodyweight should be given daily for a period of 9 to 12 months to improve hoof quality. Biotin is not the whole story as many other nutrients should be included in the diet to optimise hoof quality, including methionine or cysteine, zinc, copper, iodine, calcium and vitamin A. A supplement such as TopSpec Healthy Hoof can be used as an addition to any diet that does not include sufficient micronutrients to provide full support for hoof formation.

Digestive Aids Although, many top specification feed balancers and some compound feeds already include digestive supplements, there are times when the sensitive microflora of the hindgut need exceptionally high levels of support. At times like these, specific supplements added to the daily feed can make all the difference. Probiotics such as pure, protected yeast, promote the fibre-digesting (‘good’) bacteria in the hindgut. Prebiotics, in the form of Mannan Oligosaccharides (MOS), mop up pathogenic (‘bad’) bacteria, thereby boosting the population of cellulolytic (fibre-digesting) bacteria. MOS also support immune function. With the changes occurring within a horse’s digestive system as a consequence of stress, appetite can be reduced. Vitamin B12 is known to stimulate appetite and flavourings like molasses, apple sauce, mint and peppermint oil can be used to improve consumption of feeds. The addition of

sugary products like molasses should be kept to a minimum in most cases, as it may add to any sugar overload in the hindgut. Products without added sugar but including vitamin B12, such as TopSpec Digestive Aid, would be more appropriate.

Calming Supplements Calming Supplements such as TopSpec Calmer are in high demand and the right product can be invaluable for horses that suffer from stress and anxiety. One of the key ingredients to look out for is Tryptophan, an amino acid which is a precursor (i.e. a building block) of serotonin (5HT). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which acts in the brain to reduce anxiety and promote a mood of happiness, concentration and relaxation. It is thought when the hindgut environment becomes more acidic as a consequence of stress horses can become grumpy and ‘fizzy’ due to the feeling of ‘acid guts.’ Digestive aids, including yeast probiotics and MOS prebiotics are therefore, very useful to include in calmers. Magnesium is a much-discussed ingredient in calmers and the justification for its inclusion lies in its role in the transmission of nervous impulses. Experience would show that not all horses respond to magnesium-only calmers, especially if they receive a well-balanced diet. Conversely, other horses may not metabolise magnesium efficiently and therefore, have an increased demand, so it is wise to include it as an ingredient in a calmer.
