fter the wettest April on record, events and competitions have been cancelled up and down the country including Badminton Horse Trials. If you missed the pictures of Badminton under water, I highly recommend taking a peep at their website. Equestrian Centres with indoor arenas benefitted massively during this period and whilst not ideal Ian Bareham of Golden Cross was still able to run his two day Derby Show in early May. Localrider Magazine sponsored the 95cm class and it was a delight to see some familiar faces as well as meeting some less familiar competitors (full report next issue). We also had a chance to browse the wonderful stock in Debbie Vincent’s new tack shop upstairs in the indoor arena at Golden Cross. The sun shone on 8th May as Claire Lomas completed her London Marathon in aid of Spinal Research. There was a raw emotion as she completed her 16 day journey and broke the finish line to be the first person ever to complete the Marathon in a robotic suit. More picture on page 10. Andrew Gould Lecture Demonstration at Merrist Wood Top International dressage rider and trainer Andrew Gould is set to visit merrist Wood College in Guildford, Surrey to hold a lecture demonstration. The evening event will take place on Wednesday 11th july 2012 starting at 7.30pm. Andrew will ride a selection of his top competition horses to show different training methods and exercises he uses to produce a dressage horse and progress them through the levels. Perfect posture

As a rider, your posture when riding is vital. The ability to hold an upright and balanced rider posture at all times is critical for control and influence over the horse. It also sums up the difference between being a rider and simply someone who is along for the ride! Why is posture important?

Firstly, when you get on your horse you have immediately lost all sense of gravity and support. The stability of the ground has gone and now you are at the mercy of your horse’s movement. Your horse also weighs around ten times more than you so complete body control is imperative. The smallest shift in the rider’s centre of gravity may result in a loss of proper alignment and will compromise the rider’s control of the horse. Take the sport dressage for example; here, it is essential for the rider to allow the horse its own self carriage. To gain influence over your horse, a strong and correct posture is key; this helps to maintain the core strength that is needed to control your horse and communicate cues to the horse.

Modern life conspires against good posture

Assessing weak postural areas In the discipline of yoga, it is possible to concentrate on a certain area that needs improving. The Yoga Journal provides a simple technique to assess your weak postural areas as follows: You can assess your spinal curves by standing against a door frame. When you stand with your heels very near the frame, you should have contact at your sacrum (the upside-down triangularshape bone a few inches above your tailbone), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the back of your head. With normal spinal curves, your lower back and neck won’t touch— there should be about an inch of space between the door frame and the vertebrae of your lower back. Once you have identified any areas of weakness, yoga can help to re-build your posture with certain exercises and techniques. Yoga helps to create a healthy alignment that is right for you. It will help you feel simultaneously strong and at ease, which can then be transferred to your horse. Read more about the benefits of yoga by visiting www.yogajournal.com.

Ideally, you should maintain good proper posture at all times. In an ideal world, if your posture is correct when you are sitting at your desk, out walking or during everyday activities, you wouldn’t have to constantly think about your posture when riding – you could concentrate solely on your discipline. However, maintaining a good posture for non-professional riders can be hard, because we don’t enforce it into our ‘normal’ jobs, or everyday lives. Modern life conspires against good posture. Riding is all about symmetry, so unless you are a truly gifted ambidextrous person, you will have a left or right sided strength, which will mean you will naturally lean to one side when riding. The best thing to do is develop a good posture from targeted exercises. Yoga is a great discipline to take up if you want to develop good core strength and a flexible back and pelvis. Yoga helps create a good posture that you can incorporate in to your everyday life. To function efficiently, your skeletal structure needs to be aligned vertically; when you are standing, your ears should be over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips, and your hips over your knees and ankles. When any body part falls out of this vertical line, other muscles will try to pick up the slack and therefore feel unnecessary strain. This is such a common problem for many of us! You may be wondering, why all this interest in postural techniques like yoga? Well, as the inventor of the RS-tor rider safety aid, I am passionate about preventing falls. A case study for a happy barefoot horse By Lucy Nicholas of Trelawne Equine, distributors of barefoot boots

n May’s issue of Localrider, we looked at what to expect when your barefoot horse is trimmed; we advised that only the hoof material that would wear away naturally, or needs to be removed to strengthen or prevent pathology, should be filed away; we also discussed the fact that your hoofcare practitioner should discuss with you how the hoof works, what common ailments might appear and why, in the barefoot horse. Hopefully it was useful, and a few readers will have started researching the barefoot option in more detail! There’s no denying that the transitional stage from shod to bare is a potentially bumpy process, so it pays to research the management of barefoot horses thoroughly first. One of the nicest things about working within the field of natural horsecare is the feedback we get from horse owners that have made the change from having their horses shod, to going barefoot. We do make a special effort to support to help people making the change, even if it is just answering emails with queries about hoof boots, which are often used during the transitional process – so it is nice to hear really positive success stories, like the one below. Hopefully it will inspire others to consider the barefoot option.

Case study “I have owned Bapsford for nine years – he has been barefoot for a year, at the time of writing. He has been fairly accident prone since I have had him; on two occasions he damaged the medial suspensory ligament of his left hind leg, and required lengthy periods of box rest. Each time, it has then triggered lameness problems relating to his hips and sacro-iliac joint.

I read an article about going barefoot; it seemed that this could be something that could help him. At first I thought it would not be possible, as surely his feet would not be able to cope with the amount of roadwork I needed to do; we have very little off-road hacking? But the more I started to research, the more I realised that I had nothing to lose by trying it; he was not sound enough to ride properly with shoes on anyway. I am a vet in small animal practice and am shocked about how little I knew about the proper function of the hoof and how horse shoes prevent this. When I told my farrier (of 20 years) what I was planning, he said, ‘Well of course it is better for their feet if you don’t shoe them, but I’d be surprised if you can do that much road work’; however he is used to me trying to prove him wrong and has remained supportive! When I told my equine vet why he’d not seen us for lameness issues for some time since going barefoot, he was pleased, and said he knew of more people that were not shoeing now. Bapsford and I do mostly hacking, and since last summer we have started doing horse agility. Last month we did our first Trec training session, where he excelled himself. Since going barefoot, I have also gone bitless, and have found the confidence to start a bit of jumping again. Bapsford’s typical, flat Thoroughbred feet have transformed into nice, neat upright feet with improved grip – so no more slipping on the roads. I am also no longer paranoid about the hard ground knowing that he has proper, natural shock absorbers protecting his legs now. Obviously it is cheaper than being shod which is a bonus. Overall, I have a much happier horse.” Bapsford’s Mum.

Solution for bit evasion? By Stephen Biddlecombe of www.bombersbits.co.uk

As a retailer of Bombers sweet iron bits, we often get asked advice regarding bitting options for horses. Here we share a recent email query from a local horse owner:

My 18-year-old loan mare sometimes shakes her head when schooling. She’s had her back and teeth checked and her tack fits. i ride her in a loose ring French link snaffle and my dressage instructor says the horse is simply evading. What bit may suit her? M Ellis, Uxbridge

Your horse may just have a sensitive tongue, as headshaking is a classic symptom, and is a way of avoiding pressure; horses with sensitive tongues may also put the tongue out, or over the bit. Because horses are flight animals, they do not yield to pressure or pain, but instead move away from it. You are right to work with relevant experts to help solve your mare’s problem – presumably neurological issues have also been ruled out. You could try her in a sweet iron bit, as they oxidise easily, encouraging salivation and acceptance. one potential bit is the elliptical loose ring, pictured above right, from Bombers equestrian equipment Bits. The bit features a 45 mm lozenge in the centre; it has a small surface area, so a horse that uses its tongue as a means of pushing against the bit will draw back to a better point of control. This bit retails for £55.26. Bombers Equestrian Equipment Bits were launched to the UK via distributor Equine Management Ltd in 2011, when they launched the world’s first ‘design a bit’ service online. Customers can specify one of seven mouth piece sizes and one of twelve cheek piece styles on an enquiry form, and after its submission, will be contacted via email with a price for the bit and turnaround time for its hand-made production. If there is a requirement for a size not detailed on the website, customers can write this information in the description box, for a completely bespoke service. Darley to Dressage

ince i last wrote, the heavens seem to have opened and haven’t let up! This has put paid to several showing qualifiers i’d hoped to go to at the beginning of May but i did manage to get to Speedgate and oldencraig in april to attempt a couple of novice tests. Speedgate is a new venue for me and due to its position it can be quite windy. Coupled with the rain, this was something that lex as a thin-skinned thoroughbred wasn’t too keen on. However, weather aside, we still received sixth place in the first class which i was pleased with, although i felt tension spoiled the test and was confirmed in the judge’s comments. i was unfortunate enough to have a hail storm during my second test and with tension prevailing once again the second test was somewhat disappointing. My next outing to oldencraig was quite different as i was blessed with the only sunny day in april. lex was in better form on this occasion and we warmed up with lots of very talented horse and rider combinations. our test was in the international arena and despite a calm and forward warm-up the tension bug bit once again. This affected our scores in both tests, although pleasingly, the second test was an improvement on the first. it was good for lex to experience two new venues and i hope next time he will feel more relaxed. i’ll be spending most of May schooling and hacking and will try and cram in as many lessons as the British weather will allow. it’s also that time of year for lex to have a check-up with the chiropractor, saddler and dentist – i’m leaving nothing to chance! our next show will be the Hickstead unaffiliated Dressage Championship at the end of May where we will be campaigning at both Prelim and novice. good luck to those competing, let’s hope the rain relents! emma and lexcen are sponsored by aVTrinity, a Tunbridge Wells based, independent Financial adviser. Francesca Sternberg Tops NRBC Intermediate Non Pro on Smart Like Valentino F Francesca and Smart like Valentino pictured with their prize haul

rancesca went on to win a further three classes, including the prestigious NRBC Non Pro Challenge aboard her sister’s horse Shiners Chic. This seven-year-old gelding had previously been successful when ridden by Francesca’s niece Jessica Sternberg. The ride became available as Jessica is currently taking her finals exams at The Royal Holloway University, and Francesca was delighted to be able to compete the horse in the interim period. Francesca has now won more than $250,000 in Reining competitions worldwide, making her the highest earning British Reining rider to date. She is part of the Sterling Quarter Horse team based at Bodiam, and has represented Great Britain at the last

three World Equestrian Games. Francesca joked that she has had to improve her performance recently to keep up with her Husband Doug Allen, last year’s Intermediate Open Reserve Word Champion and daughter Tabitha, last year’s AQHA International Rookie of the Year. Said Sternberg “the Heat is on!’ Francesca and Just Like Valentino can be seen in action this summer at the Garden of England Festival of Western Riding held at the Bodiam International Arena in East Sussex. The show takes place from July 18th - 22nd and will include the FEI CRI Reining class, used as a selection for the British Team competing at the FEI World Championships to be held in Italy in October. hree pony races were held at the East Sussex and Romney Marsh Hunt’s Point-to-Point Race Meeting at Catsfield on Sunday 15th April. The Marshall family from Brightling had an extremely successful day, securing a first, a second, a third and a fifth over the three races. Izzie (12) took second place in Race 2 (for Racing ponies 138cms & under), closely followed by her brother Alfie (11) in third place. Izzie then went on to finish fifth in Race 3 (for Racing ponies 148cms & under) behind her older brother Charlie (14) who won the race. Both Izzie and Alfie are pupils at Claremont Preparatory School in St. Leonards on Sea and are keen members of the school’s equestrian team.

The diary of

RACEHORSE TO RIDING HORSE On 21st February, Localrider columnist, Alex Kelly, found herself at Ascot Blood Horse Sales, with her hand in the air and the new owner of former racehorse Figaro Flyer. This diary plots Figgie’s transformation from racehorse to riding horse. May 2012 Progress? Yes, there has been progress, but it’s slow progress! Figgie has also let us know that he has another passion in his life besides Polo’s, and that’s mud. Thanks to the wettest spring on record our resident mud lark has plenty to keep him happy. I have explained to him that as he takes part in a monthly magazine column he really should try and stay pristine at all times – he’s having none of it! In between brushing the mud off him he has also had a full MOT. His back has been checked and after one physiotherapy session he is finding it easier to step through from behind. The difference is very noticeable when you ride him, he no longer feels as inflexible as a piece of 2x4 MDF. We also had his teeth looked at by equine dentist, Nick Coles, which has also been a massive

help. The day after Nick’s visit Figgie was much happier with the bit and was mouthing correctly for the first time. The next furlong in Figgie’s retraining is hacking out. Racing yards tend to exercise in groups, I have to hack on my own the majority of the time, but on the plus side all my riding is off the road. Having my mum in ear shot as it pays to be cautious, I take him out of the yard, Figgie is as cool as ever on the track that leads to the fields. I wonder if open fields might be a bit of a test for him, but when his hooves hit the grass he stops. I wasn’t expecting this reaction, he stares for a moment taking in the sights before I nudge him back into a walk and from then on we don’t look back. I’ll admit to a slightly hair raising moment when a deer jumped out and I think Figgie thought he ought to follow, but a scratch on the neck

reassured him that he didn’t need to beat it to the winning post. It’s very much baby steps, I was under no illusion that this would be a quick turn around when I took Figgie on. With the show horses and ponies I feel it takes me a year to have them on song for a show class and I’m sure retraining a racehorse will be no different. As most county show entries close in March and April he does hold some entries at a couple of them. You just never know when a horse will be ready and it’s good to have the option, but I think it might have been a bit premature on my part and we will need to wait a while.

RoR news William Fox-Pitt won the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event (USA) with Parklane Hawk, an ex-race horse from New Zealand, who is proving to be a talented and consistent partner for William, “He’s adapted to Eventing very quickly from racing – he’s an amazing horse.” After last year’s Burghley win Hawks had taken William one step closer to winning the $350,000 Rolex Grand Slam, but sadly with the cancellation of Badminton he has to wait to 2013 to

attempt winning the final leg. With early showing qualifiers kicking off in April, local riders with retrained race horses have wasted no time in qualifying for Hickstead. Racing history: Ran on the flat as a threeyear-old and trained with Lady Herries he then went onto Laurence Wells to run over hurdles. Billy ran a total of twenty five times under rules - flat, hurdles and chase - and completed two point to points. His best result was at Huntingdon when he finished second in a two and a half mile furlong selling handicap hurdle. Beaten by just half a length on good to firm ground after leading from the start and was subsequently claimed by David Pipe.

Any advice for anyone wanting to retrain a race horse: Take your time, retraining doesn’t happen overnight. Feed your horse a low energy balanced high fibre diet to start with and give your horse plenty of turnout. Take your horse right back to basics as if he were just broken. Nip any bad habits in the bud before they flourish. Would you do it again? Yes I would definately do it again, it’s so rewarding.

Riding Arena

Most riders dream of keeping their horses at home and once they have purchased the stables and land they dream of building the perfect arena, which will allow them to school virtually all year round. There is lots to consider when installing an arena, not least planning permission and we asked Mark Scott of Mark Scott Equestrian Arenas to remind us all of the process involved prior to the first digger arriving on site.

Be cautious

Building an arena is a big investment for most people and it is tempting to go for the cheaper option. Mark said: “Often people know a man up the road with a digger, someone who can get sand, stone , fencing, and ‘he is so much cheaper than other quotes’, who will also do it for cash. These contractors are commonly good machine operators, who have an understanding of soil conditions. Unfortunately their understanding of equine sand, drainage systems and the aggregate that surrounds the drains, along with membrane quality and specifications leaves a lot to be desired. The likelihood of minimal quantities being used at the construction stage can compound with the poor materials and invariably within two to three years or less can lead to disappointment. Usually the surface will ride deep as a result of poor quality sand leading to all the inherent problems that it brings in terms of additional stress on horse’s limbs and feet, together with membrane damage and possible integration of the sand and sub surface. This may also be coupled with poor drainage.” Often the cost of correcting a badly constructed arena can exceed the cost the contractor quoted to build the arena from scratch.

Planning Permission

You will normally require planning permission for change of use of the land and this can be obtained from your local authority. It is at this stage you may discover your land is still classed as agricultural and may need to be transferred to equine use, which can normally be done as a formality. However, planning permission on the whole seems to be taking longer and costing more. Councils are still giving planning decisions to construct within the eight week specified timescale, however it appears that in most cases conditions are stipulated. Each of these conditions has to be addressed and signed off before works can commence. Councils have another three weeks to respond to these condition replies. Some councils are charging a one off fee of £85.00 to discharge, while others are charging £35.00 per condition, all on top of the recent planning fee increase from £265.00 to £330.00. It is wise to allow at least three months for the planning process, when considering building an arena. lanning the installation of a new riding arena is an exciting prospect for most equine enthusiasts. Whether you are building it for personal use, so that you have a dedicated area to school your own horse or whether you are expanding an existing equine business, the initial research both before and at the quotation stage should be the same. The practical realities of getting a professional riding surface installed are far from straight forward. Cost is invariably the big question on most people’s minds. The simple answer to this is you get what you pay for, in terms of both size and quality of surface, not to mention drainage and fencing. It is always a good policy to obtain two or three quotes when you are at this preliminary stage, this should involve site visits from the contractors you have invited to quote. This will give you an opportunity to get a feel for the person who you will eventually be negotiating and working with and ask questions about any areas of the work you are unsure about. The contractor should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the products he is selling, in terms of quality of equine sand, drainage bed, timber, and methodology. The contractor should also be able to provide you with a list of existing customers who have had the same surface, as you would like. A phone call or a visit to one or two of these customers is recommended in order to gain feedback, both on how the surface rides and also to ask about the project itself from start to finish. Ask if there is anything they would have done differently.

ndoor school owners could save thousands of pounds in electricity by installing an innovative see-through wall (see advert on p41). While many riding schools rely on plastic rooflights and fluorescent lighting, they can now opt for a more natural, and cheaper, alternative. Highlight - a perforated metal wall sheeting creates a light and airy environment with excellent ventilation and natural daylight, without allowing in wind and rain. “Roof lights often give uneven lighting across a building, with the creation of shadowy areas and strong light beams,” says Ali Dominy, recreational rider and managing director at United Roofing Products in Devon. “Electrical lighting can also create shadows, and is expensive to run, while glass or plastic windows often result in a stuffy atmosphere in the summer.” Highlight’s perforations allow light and air through 25% of the clad area in an even spread, so the building is always light and well ventilated. “However, it doesn’t allow in wind and rain – it is like standing outside but without the weather.” Originally developed to improve health and welfare in livestock buildings, it is now in great demand for equestrian use, including as walling on indoor schools and equine pools.

Other yards need to have lights on eight hours a day, so that’s a saving for us of over £1400 a year. The panels were very easy and relatively cheap to install – and also curried favour with the local planning department. At a cost of about £2000 installed, I think it is probably cheaper than timber cladding. It’s light and easy to put up – you can just pick it up with one hand so we literally put it up with a ladder and a few hand tools. It is performing very well and the horses seem to like it – it’s nice and airy inside in the summer, and doesn’t get hot like some indoor schools do,” says Scott. Laura Powell writes... Gutted, absolutely gutted about Badminton being cancelled. To make matters worse I can’t even attempt to qualify for it for the next five years as I’ve previously ridden round an Intermediate course. I had the lorry packed, been out and bought all the supplies for the week, and then had to spend all day Monday unpacking. With the majority of events cancelling, or due to cancel and more rain on the way I made the most of my ‘Badminton’ week and went to find four days of sun! The yard was organised, I didn’t have any lessons booked and the horses would survive four days on the walker. Debbie (who was due to groom for me) and I made a mad dash to the shops to buy bikinis and summer wear and boarded a plane to Majorca. We only went Wednesday to Sunday, but it was a great way to get over the disappointment. However, as soon as we landed in grey England the rain, hail and wind continued. Before ‘the rain’ we had a trip to South of England horse trials. A local event, which attracts loads of big names and you can usually find yourself sharing the practice fence with one the greats! I had Spud and Alf entered for the BE100. Spud finally produced a better test of 33.5 and then went on to produce a lovely double clear, to finish sixth. I was especially pleased with him as the cross country had been beefed up and there was a serious lack of Christmas trees at the edge of all the skinnies. Alf meanwhile warmed up beautifully, until we went into our dressage arena, which was in the furthest corner right next to the main road. We had juggernauts, people walking their dogs and all sorts come past in the six minutes that we were in the arena. We held it together, but it wasn’t pretty - 40 was a generous score! In the show jumping he didn’t even acknowledge the second fence until we went through it. Despite jumping the rest clear we decided not to run him cross country as he was meant to be heading to Badminton and we didn’t want to take our chances! So other than that it’s been pretty quiet. Sooty has gone to a lovely new home in Essex where he will become a professional dressage horse and also jump affiliated. Spud and Alf are entered for Borde Hill which will hopefully be dry enough to run and then we might move up to novice. Until then there are more show jumping shows - on all weather arenas! And the old witch (Daisy) has started her fitness campaign (again). I’ve taken it really slow with her as she tied up again in January. This is my last attempt at bringing her back to competition. I’ve got her turned out at night on a bank to keep her moving and she’s just started cantering. Hopefully by next month we may have been out and terrorised everyone at a show!

Assisted Breeding

provide information with regards to their competition history. When purchasing semen from abroad I would advocate the use of an agent such as Elite Stallions to buy the semen on your behalf. To import semen into the UK, the semen must comply with certain health criteria for example the stallion from which the semen has been collected must be free of Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA) at the time of collection. It is much easier to allow an agent to make sure all the paperwork certifying the health status of the stallion, the “health papers”, arrives properly with the semen. The agents will also sort out the shipping of the semen to the required location. Communication between vets, owners and semen agents is essential. Many of the problems encountered with the AI routines are due to mares being examined too late in the day to order semen and breakdowns in the lines of communication.

here are many reasons why people breed horses, some people do it for fun just to enjoy having a foal, some people want to breed from a mare they have enjoyed owning and is retired from ridden work or is having a career break, some people are wanting to breed a serious competition horse for dressage, show jumping or eventing. The assisted breeding technique of artificial insemination allows the use of stallions from all over the world and embryo transfer allows mares to continue in competition and to produce foals without having a career break. This massively widens the gene pool available to breeders. That is not to say the stallions in the UK are of poor quality, it is just that there may be a more appropriate stallion for a particular mare in another country such as Germany or Holland. Many of the modern techniques used by skilled vets are successful and relatively inexpensive. Quite simple routines make breeding for novice mare owners less daunting. Scanning the mare

Semen is either available in chilled or frozen form. There are advantages of both types; chilled semen is ordered the day before the mare is due to ovulate. It is collected to order, chilled to about 5°C and shipped to arrive with the mare within 24 hours of collection. Chilled semen is shipped all over the UK and Europe easily. It is possible to get chilled semen from the USA but is much more tricky. The disadvantage of chilled semen is that semen is only available on the days that the courier will reliably deliver i.e. Tuesday to Friday and possibly Saturday. One of the main advantages of chilled semen is the timing of insemination needs to be less precise and the techniques used for insemination process are less skilled, however I now use a deep intrauterine insemination technique to inseminate mares that have had small volumes of chilled semen delivered from the continent. Also some stallions have better fertility with chilled semen than with frozen semen. The success with frozen semen seems to be stallion dependent. Some stallions are more fertile after the semen has been frozen and thawed than others. However with modern freezing techniques the majority of stallions now have very good fertility when frozen semen is used. The main advantage of using frozen semen is that it is ordered well in advance of when it is required. It is stored at the facility where the mare is to be inseminated and it is available seven days a week. The disadvantages of using frozen semen is the timing of insemination is much more crucial and the insemination techniques, usually deep intra uterine insemination are far more skilled. We aim to inseminate with frozen semen within 4 to 6 hours of ovulation, we use ovulation induction agents that relatively accurately stimulate ovulation approximately 36 to 48 hours after administration, however to get the timing correct still requires 3 or 4 examinations on the day of insemination.

Managing your mare

One of the key aspects to getting mares in foal with chilled or frozen semen is the management of the mare after she has been inseminated. Many mares, particularly older mares, develop a post inseminating endometritis, or inflammatory response within the uterus. Identifying this by ultrasound scanning the uterus 6 to 24 hours after service and dealing with it with sterile saline lavages and

The aim of this article is not to discuss in details routines used for frozen and chilled semen but to show that using AI is a simple option. As the vet goes through the AI process, of actually getting the mare in foal, the owner of the mare will go through a steep learning curve. Artificial insemination by experienced vets is a very successful and simple way of obtaining a foal. The mare stays at home or locally at a specialist AI centre and the owners are involved in what is happening. In my experience we have experienced higher conception rates with both chilled and frozen semen than with natural service.

Choosing a stallion

The starting point when planning a breeding program for a mare is to choose the stallion. Looking in magazines where stallion owners advertise is a good way of starting to look at which stallions are available. The internet has also made selecting stallions much easier, there is so much information available on the net, many of the stud’s websites have video clips of the stallions and the breed societies will 56 Localrider june 2012

intra-uterine antibiotics is essential. An exciting area of assisted breeding that is developing rapidly is embryo transfer (ET). This is where a donor mare, of value to the owner either for sport or for some other reason, produces a foal without having to carry the foal and have a break in her career. ET can also allow mares with fertility problems such as a damaged uterus or orthopaedic problems such as a damaged pelvis, that cannot carry a foal, to produce a foal that is carried by a surrogate mother. One of the other advantages is that several foals can be produced from one high value mare in a season potentially by different stallions.

Looking for embryos

The mare is inseminated or mated with a desired stallion following the usual process. The uterus is flushed at 7 or 8 days after ovulation, the recovered fluid is filtered and searched through under a microscope for 14 d embryo an embryo. The embryo is loaded into a straw and transferred into a recipient (surrogate mare), whose cycle has been closely synchronised with the donor mareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cycle. In experienced hands ET can be very successful. The biggest problem is having a big enough group of recipient mares to accurately synchronise 28d embryo with the donor mare. The routine that we have developed in our practice is to flush the donor mare and ship the embryo within four hours to a stud in the midlands, where there is a large herd of recipient mares. The beauty of this routine is that the mare can stay at home and continue with its training and competition, she is just taken away to a facility where we can do the embryo flush for a couple of hours.

Embryos can also be flushed from mares and frozen for transfer into a recipient at a much later date in the future. Embryos do get sold like this and they get sold in recipient mares. The expected success rates with AI and embryo transfer do depend on the experience of the stud vet. The fertility rates with frozen and chilled semen can be as high as 80% per cycle, with a total in foal rate of 95% by the end of the season, however, this will Clearing the be influenced by the fertility membranes from the nose of the mare and the stallion. We aim to achieve an embryo flush rate that is comparable with the expected in foal rate following AI, we usually achieve a flush rate of approximately 80% and a transfer rate of approximately 80% of those embryos taking in the recipient mare. Following freezing the transfer rate can be as low as 45%. As to the costs, most vets do fixed price packages so that you can see what you are likely to pay for both AI and ET. For future improvement of British Sport Horse Breeding assisted breeding techniques are essential. There are many factors that go into producing a successful sport horse such as the training and rider selection, but the starting point has to be the combination of the genes from quality successful mares and stallions by breeding. Using AI, a stallionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gene pool can be available while he remains in competition. The genes from top quality mares used only to become available when the mare is retired or has a career break. Many people are reluctant to give mares career breaks as they often do not come back into competition as successfully as they did before, this is where embryo transfer becomes so important. We need to promote the breeding from successful mares in competition by embryo transfer to produce the best horses for the highest levels of sport.

Julie Padmore’s, Petley Wood Equestrian Centre is home to some 48 horses and ponies. With only 50 acres of turnout, and the recent hay and straw shortages and rocketing hard feed prices, Julie was keen to look for a reliable and cost effective alternative that would also be better for the horses. “We could not rely on the quality of the hay and it’s often the same with the hard feed. Feeding for Weight Control & Laminitis

Whilst most of us welcome the arrival of spring and are only too happy to say goodbye to dark winter nights and cold weather, many owners are also worried about the risk of laminitis and weight gain. So what can we do to keep our horses safe and in shape as the spring grass arrives? What is laminitis? Put simply, laminitis is an inflammation of the laminae (the soft tissue that attaches the pedal bone to hoof wall), causing pain and lameness. This can range from mild discomfort to in more severe cases, the horse being unable to stand. If you suspect your horse or pony has laminitis call the vet immediately, as early diagnosis and treatment is key to recovery.

Who is at risk? Prevention is always better than cure so it’s important to remember that laminitis can affect any horse or pony at any time; regardless of their breed, age, condition, workload or the time of year. Whilst laminitis is definitely not just a condition that affects fat ponies in spring, the following groups may be considered to be at higher risk: • Ponies and native breeds • Overweight horses and ponies, particularly those with a condition score of 7 or above • Those with a cresty neck (particularly if they also have a condition of 7 or above) • Cushingoid horses and ponies • Previous sufferers Laminitis continues to be the subject of much research and the reason why some horses get laminitis and others do not, is still not fully understood. Despite the many myths and speculation, there is no single measure that can guarantee safety and managing the risk factors associated with diet and weight gain is the best known prevention.

Feeds and Supplements Horses and ponies prone to laminitis need a high in fibre, low in starch (cereals are high in starch) and low sugar diet, which includes the water soluble carbohydrate (WSC ~ sugar plus fructan) found in forage. Choose cubes over mixes and select feeds that contain a maximum of 10% starch unless advised by a nutritionist. You can be assured that feeds approved by the Laminitis Trust are safe, but take care to look for the genuine approval mark. For overweight horses and good-doers, a feed balancer is the ideal way to ensure optimum nutrition without excess calories, sugar or starch. Whilst supplements can help to improve hoof health, it’s

important to be realistic about what they can achieve. Supplements cannot prevent laminitis nor can they make grazing safe!

Forage Forage accounts for the largest portion of the horse’s diet and consequently is the largest contributor of calories and sugar. Recent studies have shown that horses can easily consume 5% of their bodyweight per day living out at grass; far more than the 1.5% needed by most good-doers and overweight horses. Grass can contain up to 7.5% sugar and 50% WSC which means the average 500 kg horse could consume up to 1.9 kg of sugar and 12.5 kg of WSC from grass alone. Grazing muzzles have proven to be very effective and can reduce grass intake by up to 80%. Alternatively, strip grazing or reduced turn out can also help but beware; horses can quickly learn to eat large amounts if only turned out for short periods un-muzzled (close to 1% of their bodyweight in 3 hours). For known laminitics, it may be necessary to consider no grazing during peak growth (typically spring and autumn) and instead provide turnout in a bark paddock or ménage if possible. Hay can be deceptively high in WSC so think about having your hay analysed (less than 10% WSC is recommended). Whilst soaking for 12-16 hours can help, forage analysis is the only way to guarantee safety for known laminitics. Alternatively, consider a low calorie hay replacer approved by the Laminitis Trust.

Weight Watching We are surrounded by messages about human obesity and the benefits of eating less and moving more. Equally, a calorie controlled diet and increased exercise is the best way to keep your horses figure in check, so make the most of the better weather and get riding! Condition score you horse regularly, aiming for a score of 5 out of 9. This is the ideal way to monitor if and where he is carrying excess fat. As summer draws to an end and winter sets in, don’t be tempted to overfeed. Allowing your horse lose excess weight over winter helps to prevent obesity in the following spring. Feeding for weight control and laminitis With the wettest April on record, most horse owners are experiencing unprecedented levels of grass growth in the horse’s fields. Depending on the level of work your horse is in, you can hopefully manage your horse’s grass intake and keep him in good shape throughout the summer. However, if your horse’s waistline is expanding and you are worried about laminitis or your horse’s health in general do speak to your vet. Most of the products here are aimed at feeding the good doer, to ensure his optimum intake of fibre combined with vitamin and minerals, however, a few are also aimed at ponies who have previously suffered with and are prone to laminitis.

You can’t open a page in a magazine today without reading about the benefits of body condition scoring (BCS) and the importance of using a weigh tape to monitor weight fluctuations. The most poignant message however is prevention is better than cure! We are not going to talk about the links between equine obesity and laminitis – but what we are going to touch on is the lesser known, but most common form of Laminitis ‘Endocrinopathic Laminitis’ which is developed from hormonal influences (Johnson et al. 2004) and is not just confined to ponies – all equines are susceptible with poor dietary management and exercise programs. Commonly linked to this crippling condition are: Cushing’s Syndrome; Insulin Resistance or Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS). Common to all of these conditions is disturbed glucose & insulin regulation, and, most importantly, the development of insulin resistance. What is EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome)

Signs of a horse suffering with ulcers include crib biting

and should it concern you?...

n recent years there has been an explosion of interest in equine stomach ulcers, also known as EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome). This has been driven, at least in part, by the development of longer scopes which physically allow vets to reach the equine stomach and see what is going on. What they’ve found is that ulcers are a larger problem than any of us ever thought. There is now a body of scientific evidence behind them, with some papers finding ulcers present in over 90% of horses tested.

What causes horses to have stomach ulcers?

Essentially they’re a by-product of the modern equine lifestyle. Horses evolved to trickle graze and so always have something fibrous in their stomach. This constant supply of fibre would sit like a mat on top of the natural stomach acid, so preventing it sloshing around! Without the protective layer of fibre, the harder the horse works the more the stomach acid will splash around and can splash onto the upper section of the stomach, which doesn’t have the natural protection found at the lower level. It is in this unprotected area of the stomach where we typically see ‘splash ulcers’ forming. Competition horses are those most at risk due to their relatively high concentrate and low fibre diet, their hard work regime, and traditionally a limited access to turnout and grazing. So those of us with working and competition horses should be particularly vigilant for the signs.

What are the signs to look for?

The signs of gastric ulcers vary, but often include those that historically we may have put down to a generally moody temperament that we just have to deal with! Signs of a horse suffering with ulcers include difficulty retaining weight and condition, stereotypic behaviour such as crib biting, box walking or weaving, an untidy messy stable bed. When being ridden signs may be a reluctance to work, an objection to the girth being tightened or hyper reactive behaviour.

What measures should you take to avoid the occurrence of ulcers?

Importantly adjust your horse’s diet and management routine accordingly -feed a high fibre, low concentrate diet, splitting the concentrate element into as many meals as practical. Turn out as much as possible, as grazing stimulates a continuous flow of saliva and food which buffers the acidic nature of the stomach. Try to

ensure that your horse always has something in his stomach when working. This is an interesting measure, but while we would obviously not recommend a large feed is given before work, it is a good idea to give a few of handful of chaff to help provide the mat of fibre required in the stomach. Targeted nutritional support is also recommended. Natural antacids can help to soothe the stomach, and maintain the balance of pH within the gut. However, antacids alone are unlikely to be as effective as especially formulated products. These will combine antacids with antioxidants to flush toxins out from the system and key herbal support for stomach health.

What do you do if you suspect your horse already has ulcers?

If you believe your horse might already be troubled by gastric stress consult your vet. If ulcers are subsequently found to be present follow your vet’s advice.
