t was very rewarding to have been involved in the organisation of the Cranleigh RDA Sponsored Ride on Good Friday. The riders were so appreciative and their enjoyment evident. One rider wrote afterwards: “just wanted to say a huge thank you for a wonderful day. It was such a great event, so well organized and great marshals. Thank you so much and we hope you raised lots of money.” 130 riders with horses of all shapes and sizes, coming from London and all over the South east entered for the 11 mile ride, a marked loop taking them all over the Surrey Hills, across Blackheath, Farley Heath and Winterfold Forest. Despite dreary weather conditions the riders were unfailingly upbeat and positive, out for a good day and happy to ride to support the charity in its mission to bring horse riding to people with special needs. Smiles were seen all along the way, raising the spirits of the chilly marshals who sat patiently all day through, rain spattering their check sheets, to make sure none went astray. Two of the Cranleigh RDA horses, Robbie and Aero, regularly used for session work with special needs riders, also competed the long 11 mile circuit with their riders, Cranleigh RDA volunteers Alice Lee and Sue Keen - a big day out for the RDA boys! Ten young riders also completed the shorter three-mile route for led and accompanied riders. These included three young special needs riders who regularly ride at Casi’s Farm, the group’s base. This was a great achievement for them and they were proud to display the rosettes awarded to mark their success. Local land owners and managers supported the day by allowing their land to be used, and many local businesses and companies sponsored marshal points, swelling the income from the event. The funds raised from this annual ride are crucial to the group’s ability to continue to provide its service. Warmest thanks to all those who rode or supported the event in whatever way.
