Team Relay & Gate Jumping Brendon Stud, Pyecombe, West Sussex • Sunday 19th March 2017 Words and pictures by Spidge Photography
T
welve-year-old Isabelle Cook had a very successful day at Brendon Stud’s Team Relay and Gate Jumping Show. Along with friends, Briony Martin riding Golden Liberty and Yazmin Cutts riding Betty, Isabelle and her New Forest pony Parsley formed the winning ‘Girl Power’ team, which won the Breen Equestrian Junior Team Relay competition. Isabelle went on to win the Baker Family Junior Gate Jumping class, clearing an impressive 1.40m on her other pony, 14.2hh Clover. The gate started at 60cm, going up to 75cm, 95cm and 1.05m before going up in 5cm increments. Isabelle was the only rider to clear 1.40m. There was a practice fence in the ring, which riders were allowed to jump once during each round. Isabelle’s mother is the medal winning British event rider, Tina Cook. Tina unfortunately couldn’t go with Isabelle, as she was watching Harry, her 10-yearold son, play rugby, he plays for Worthing Rugby Club. However, Isabelle had the full support of her grandmother, Althea Gifford, who as a former international show jumper would have had lots of good advice on how to clear a 1.40m gate. Isabelle loves hunting and her team mates, Briony Martin and Yazmin Cutts, are fellow field members of the Crawley & Horsham Hunt. Clover was originally bought as a hunting pony, he was found by Fred Ford hunting up country. Tina said that during the season she drops Isabelle off in the morning and picks her up six hours later, after she has spent a fabulous day chatting and charging around the countryside with her friends. Isabelle has grown up doing a bit of everything, rallies, camp and competitions with the Crawley & Horsham Pony Club, but
her passion is eventing and she is counting down the days to her first British Eventing competition, the BE90 at Portman. She also hopes to represent her branch of the Pony Club at the Area competitions too. Chatting to Tina, after Isabelle’s win, it is clear she is very proud of what Isabelle has achieved, particularly with a pony who was originally bought to hunt. Tina said: “He turned out to be better than we thought and has a lot of scope, but Isabelle has put the time in training him and improving his flatwork. Of course I am always there to help, but she does the work herself. She gets up at 6.30am to muck out and as soon as she is home from school she is riding. If she had her way she would stay out all night riding!”
Three Little Pigs
The Three Little Pigs Team of Laura Walker on Calvados Queen, Ellie Pargeter on Dreamaway and Poppy Barr on Billy Waffle won the Arundel Equine Hospital Open Team Relay class in a time of 72.06 seconds. Hot on their heels were Howes Hopefuls, who finished in 73.57 seconds.
Leaping Leo
Cath Fowdrey and seven-year-old Leo cleared an impressive 1.65m to win the Grant Laing Farriery Open Gate Jumping class. You can see from the picture, that the gate was almost as tall as Cath. Cath who is a human and horse physiotherapist has owned Leo since he was three. She said: “I bought him from his breeder, a friend, Anne McCoubrey, in Ireland. He was an accident his mum was only a yearling when a naughty brown and white pony colt had his wicked way. So Leo
was totally unexpected. I also had his mum to produce and she was quite a character. Leo has been and still can be a bit tricky. He gets what I think is stage fright every so often, but when he’s good he’s very good.” Leo is currently competing at Foxhunter and already has his double clears. Cath is hoping to take him and one of her other horses abroad to do the veterans show jumping series this year.
Flying like Pegasus Second place in the Grant Laing Farriery Open Gate Jumping class went to Emma Hinkley and Heritage Silver who cleared 1.60m, it is not surprising his stable name is Pegasus. The 14-year-old takes careful management, but Emma describes him as her horse of a lifetime. Emma said: “I lost a good horse in May 2015 and that September was looking for a horse to replace him with, which proved difficult. One day driving back from viewing a horse in Essex, James Brizzell phoned to say ‘I have the horse for you Emma’. I drove to his yard the following day and bought him. He was no oil painting, but he could jump. He is by Heritage Fortunus out of full draught mare. The first few months he was very strong and I had a good few white-knuckle rides, but he could jump, so I persevered. It took me a year to get to the bottom of him. He lives out and we manage him carefully, as he can be strong. He has the heart of a lion and an engine like a Ferrari.” Emma and Heritage Silver are aiming to do the Speed Derby qualifier at Hickstead this year. We look forward to seeing all the winners out in flying form this season.
