ESSERE AND AVERE: THE PRESENT INDICATIVE
È la “rossa d’Italia”. Ha stile, Ha classe, Ha potenza. È semplicemente meravigliosa!
Che cos'È? Essere (to be) is the infinitive. The present indicative of essere:
(io) (tu) (lui, lei) (noi) (voi) (loro)
sono sei è siamo siete sono
Avere (to have) is the infinitive.
Sharif e Khaled sono tunisini. (Sharif and Khaled are Tunisian.)
The present indicative of avere: (io) (tu) (lui, lei) (noi) (voi) (loro)
ho hai ha abbiamo avete hanno
Sonia e io abbiamo un bambino: Alessandro. (Sonia and I have a son, Alessandro.)
C’è/Ci sono We use c’è and ci sono to refer to the existence of someone or something. C’è + singular = C’è una penna. (There is a pen.) In questa classe ci sono tre banchi, c’è un quaderno, ci sono tre sedie e c’è una penna. (In this classroom there are three desks, there’s an exercise book, there are three chairs and there’s a pen.)
Ci sono + plural = Ci sono tre sedie. (There are three chairs.)

We don’t pronounce the h in ho, hai, ha and hanno (▸ Appendixes 1 and 2).
