Valentina Pepe has worked as a journalist and interior designer after graduating in Modern Literature and Conservation of Cultural Heritage. A Masters in design and furnishing has led her to pursue interior architecture with great passion and sensitivity, like all those with cross-cultural backgrounds. She has worked with the main Italian publications and sector-based blogs, creating the design section for the fanpage.it website.

She currently works as a regular contributor to the Panorama weekly magazine published by the Mondadori group and Artribune. She is also the writer and face behind the contemporary on-trend programme airing on Sky. She loves his three daughters, yellow and the scent of gardenias.

Giornalista e interior designer dopo la laurea in Lettere Moderne e Conservazione dei Beni Culturali, un master in design e arredamento si avvicina ai temi dell’architettura d’interni con grande passione e sensibilità, come tutti coloro che vantano profili trasversali. Ha collaborato con le principali testate italiane e blog di settore ed ha creato la sezione design per il portale fanpage.it. Attualmente lavora come regular contributor presso il settimanale Panorama edito dal gruppo Mondadori e Artribune, è inoltre autore e volto televisivo di un rotocalco di tendenze contemporanee in onda su Sky. Ama le sue tre figlie, il giallo e il profumo di gardenia.

A new graphic layout accompanies issue number seven of our magazine, which introduces the Bathroom Collection, composed of many wallpapers conceived by designers for the bathroom and presented at the Cersaie in Bologna. Dedicated to the bathroom and water in its various forms, but not only that, by browsing it you will find from the most beautiful infinity pools in the world (page 23) to the art of Ray Bartkus, passing through an article about plastic and the future; continuing on this line, there are interviews to learn more about Andrea Lupi, art director of antoniolupi (who talks about how and how much the concept of the bathroom has changed), and chef Michele Casadei Massari with his New York adventure. And then fashion, itineraries, and food with superpowers (page 50). But – as always – we love to exaggerate, so inside this issue you will also be able to admire two new subjects signed by the Marcel Wanders studio that expand the Wanderlust collection: Mondrian Dhoa and Atlantis, two magnificent and imaginary journeys in the surreal hemisphere of the Dutch team.

Una nuova veste grafica accompagna il numero sette del nostro magazine che introduce la Bathroom Collection, composta da tanti wallpaper pensati dai designer per la sala da bagno e presentata in occasione del Cersaie di Bologna. Dedicato al bagno e all’acqua nelle sue svariate forme, ma non solo, sfogliandolo troverete dalle infinitypool più belle del mondo (pag. 23) all’arte di Ray Bartkus passando per un punto sulla plastica e il futuro; proseguendo su questa linea non potevano mancare le interviste per conoscere meglio Andrea Lupi Art director di antoniolupi (che ci parla di come e quanto sia cambiato il concetto di bagno) e lo chef Michele Casadei Massari con la sua avventura newyorkese. E poi moda, itinerari e cibi con i superpoteri (pag. 50). Ma come sempre amiamo esagerare, così all’interno di questo numero potrete ammirare anche due nuovi soggetti firmati dallo studio Marcel Wanders che vanno ad ampliare la collezione Wanderlust, Mondrian Dhoa e Atlantis, due viaggi magnifici e immaginari nell’emisfero surreale del team olandese.

Andrea Lupi is the frontman of the company, the one who takes responsibility for everything. Extrovert but also thoughtful, creative but competent even in the most technical aspects. Today he is in charge of the design, research, and communication of antoniolupi.

His school career (accounting!) was just an unfortunate digression, sooner or later his creative nature had to come out, and if you can combine it with a good dose of courage, it can give life to great things. ‘The idea and the drawing are at the base of everything. I have never done a market research; you don’t need big operations to understand whether the project is the right one; I just carried out the projects I liked, the ones that moved me. Oftentimes the product is there looking at you, it just needs to be discovered!’ Andrea Lupi He holds the dual role of art director and managing director of the company, he deals with the research and development of the product as a whole, the study and planning of fairs, and the image of the company. Andrea Lupi was born and has grown in the family business covering all the roles, to learn in depth the problems and needs for the management of a company. antoniolupi is managed by the four Lupi siblings: Andrea, Patrizia, Nello, and Sergio, each one in roles of responsibility and different areas.

Andrea Lupi è il frontman dell’azienda, è quello che “ci mette sempre la faccia”, nel senso più letterale del termine. Estroverso per carattere ma anche riflessivo, creativo ma competente anche negli aspetti più tecnici. Oggi si occupa della progettazione, della ricerca e della comunicazione di antoniolupi. Quella della scuola (ragioneria!) è stata solo una sfortunata parentesi, prima o poi l’indole creativa doveva venire fuori e se la si riesce ad unire a una buona dose di coraggio, può dar vita a cose grandi. “L’idea e il segno stanno alla base di tutto. Non ho mai fatto una ricerca di mercato, non servono grandi operazioni per capire se il progetto è quello giusto, ho portato avanti solo i progetti che mi piacevano, mi emozionavano. Spesso il prodotto è lì che ti guarda, va solo scoperto!” Andrea Lupi.

Riveste il doppio ruolo di art director e amministratore delegato dell’azienda, si occupa della ricerca e dello sviluppo del prodotto nella sua globalità, studio e progettazione delle fiere e immagine dell’azienda. Andrea Lupi nasce e cresce nell’azienda di famiglia coprendo tutti i ruoli per apprendere a fondo le problematiche e le necessità per la gestione di un’impresa. La gestione della antoniolupi è curata dai quattro fratelli Lupi: Andrea, Patrizia, Nello e Sergio ciascuno in ruoli di responsabilità ed aree differenti.

How has the concept of the bathroom evolved over the years?

It was not centuries, but just a few decades ago when the bathroom in the house was still a space shared by several families. The bathroom was strictly intended as a service space. Today this environment has completely changed its destination; it has become a space of well-being, a place to rediscover yourself and be able to spend some time in tranquillity, which is sometimes difficult to find elsewhere. A true refuge where you can pamper yourself in the tub or take a shower with chromotherapy.

From minimalistic lines to the concept of a new bourgeois style, what changed? antoniolupi has always had a strong design-oriented aesthetic recognizability that embraces tastes in a range that varies from the most extreme minimalism to the elegant bourgeois. The new emerging markets also show a demand for products characterized by stylistic canons linked to memory and classic taste. In the catalogue we have over a thousand products that can meet different tastes. The secret is to offer the market products that can combine with others, customized with different colours and materials to be able to perfectly fit into houses characterized by strong design and those that are more bourgeois or even classic.

So the bathroom is a living space and no longer just a service environment?

The bathroom reflects more and more the personality of the people living in the house, especially in the last decade, becoming a highly representative place for oneself as much as a demonstrative one for the guests.

The subconscious message is precisely the one that relates us to others: if we don’t take care of ourselves, we certainly won’t have time for others. Thus, the bathroom also shows our predisposition towards others.

A place that is no longer solely functional but introspective. Here we stop, even if only for a moment, to think of ourselves, in an almost liturgical space, a space of worship, silent, harmonizing, safe, energizing, natural. So absolutely a living space and never just a service one.

Tradition and innovation, what do you bring of the history of your company into the new collections?

When my father Antonio founded the company in 1950, he had some extremely interesting models in the catalogue that today could not go into production as they were, but it is from there that I started when I began designing the products, and it is from there that sometimes I still draw inspiration. Today, cutting-edge technology and new materials offer to creativity endless opportunities that a designer and an enlightened entrepreneur must know how to seize to create unique and wonderful objects. Past and present integrate each other to create objects for the future.

You said that with antoniolupi one can create the bathroom of their dreams, in what sense?

In antoniolupi we are more and more inclined toward the poetry of a project; we value people greatly, creating objects that are able to make the customers’ dreams come true. There is no desire we cannot satisfy, every order is made to measure for the customer who placed it and for this reason we are able to create and customize each commission.

So, despite the industrial dimension, you are still able to create ‘bespoke’ items?

We are industrialists but at the same time still artisans, which is why we still manage to produce tailormade products; the craftsmanship and artisan knowledge is essential in order to create unique objects.

How are projects born?

I have always dealt with the art direction of antoniolupi. We’ve been working with numerous internationally renowned designers since the nineties, maintaining and developing a research and Study Centre within the company AL STUDIO, made up of several people researching innovation. This year for the first time I signed two products in my name together with my friend Carlo Colombo. I would like to underline the fact that antoniolupi always works with numerous designers, but you don’t notice it, as everything seems to be designed only by one hand. This is what distinguishes our company in the market. Today we talk about antoniolupi style, elegance, which is characterized by attention to design and consistency in the final product.

What are the products you are most fond of?

It was 2002 when at Cersaie I presented for the first time a total look bathroom in Corian. It was an extraordinary success, no one had ever had the courage to make such products. Later I worked on projects in marble, stone, etc. My overall favourite is BARREL, the first monolithic stone sink in the shape of a barrel… extraordinary. In the following years I created many other fantastic products, such as the first recessed concealed wall-mounted sink STRAPPO; on the same concept the showerhead METEO; the project of the fireplace CANTO DEL FUOCO... these are some examples. I am sure that the latest projects created with Paolo Ulian INTROVERSO, CONTROVERSO, PIXEL, and INTRECCIO will remain ICONS in the history of design.

Can you tell us about the pursuit of excellence in materials?

We are making many products and projects of the highest quality; we want to surprise the market with objects that are even more beautiful compared to those made until now. All this is made possible by the new generation materials we have created in the last few years: Flumood in 2015, Quarzomood, and lastly Cristalmood. These materials allow us to produce innovative shapes, thicknesses, and dimensions that the market can only appreciate.

And Cristalmood?

Cristalmood is a new mass-coloured resin of our own creation, result of antoniolupi research. Its characteristics of transparency and shininess and hardness like marble make this material suitable for making any object, not only for the bathroom but also for the home.

Come si è evoluto il concetto del bagno nel tempo?

Non sono trascorsi secoli, ma solo alcuni decenni quando ancora nelle case il bagno era uno spazio comune a più famiglie. La funzione del bagno era strettamente intesa come spazio di servizio.

Oggi questo ambiente ha cambiato completamente la sua destinazione, è diventato una spazio di benessere, un luogo per ritrovare se stessi e poter trascorrere un po’ di tempo in tranquillità che a volte è difficile avere altrove. Un vero e proprio rifugio nel quale potersi coccolare in vasca o fare una doccia con la cromoterapia.

Dalle linee essenziali al concetto di nuovo stile borghese, cosa è cambiato? antoniolupi ha da sempre una forte riconoscibilità estetica orientata al design che abbraccia gusti in un range che varia dal minimale più spinto fino al borghese elegante. I nuovi mercati emergenti dimostrano altresì la ricerca di prodotti connotati da canoni stilistici anche legati alla memoria e se vogliamo al gusto classico. In catalogo noi abbiamo oltre mille prodotti che possono incontrare diversi gusti. Il segreto è quello di offrire al mercato prodotti che possano essere combinati ad altri, personalizzati con colori e materiali differenti per poter amalgamarsi perfettamente in case connotate dal forte design a quelle più borghesi o addirittura classiche.

Quindi il bagno è uno spazio da vivere e non più solo un ambiente di passaggio?

Il bagno riflette, soprattutto nell’ultimo decennio, sempre più la personalità di chi vi abita, diventando un luogo fortemente rappresentativo per se stessi quanto dimostrativo per i propri ospiti. Il messaggio inconscio è proprio quello che relaziona noi con gli altri: se non ci prendiamo cura di noi stessi certamente non avremo il tempo per gli altri. Il bagno così racconta anche la propria predisposizione verso gli altri.

Luogo non più unicamente funzionale ma di parentesi introspettiva. Qui ci fermiamo, anche solo un attimo, per pensare a noi stessi in uno spazio quasi liturgico, di culto, silenzioso, armonizzante, sicuro, energizzante, naturale. Quindi assolutamente un luogo da vivere e mai di passaggio.

Tradizione e innovazione, cosa porti della storia della tua azienda nelle nuove collezioni?

Quando mio padre Antonio fondò l’azienda nel 1950 aveva in catalogo alcuni modelli estremamente interessanti, che oggi non potrebbero entrare in produzione così com’erano, ma è da li che io sono partito quando ho iniziato a disegnare i prodotti ed è da li che talvolta traggo ancora ispirazione.

Oggi la tecnologia all’avanguardia e i nuovi materiali offrono alla creatività infinite opportunità che un designer e un imprenditore illuminato debbono saper cogliere per creare oggetti unici e meravigliosi. Il passato ed il presente si integrano per creare oggetti per il futuro.

Hai affermato che con antoniolupi si può creare il bagno dei desideri, in che senso?

In antoniolupi siamo sempre più propensi alla poesia di un progetto, diamo molto valore alle persone, creando oggetti che riescono a realizzare i sogni dei clienti. Non esiste desiderio che non possiamo soddisfare, ogni ordine è realizzato a misura del cliente che lo ha fatto e per questo riusciamo a creare e personalizzare ogni commessa.

Quindi nonostante la dimensione industriale riuscite a realizzare ancora il “su misura”?

Siamo industriali ma allo stesso tempo ancora artigiani, per questo ancor oggi riusciamo a produrre prodotti sumisura , l’impiego manuale e la sapienza artigianale sono essenziali al fine di realizzare oggetti unici.

Come nascono i progetti?

Mi occupo da sempre della direzione artistica di antoniolupi. Fino dagli anni Novanta collaboriamo con numerosi designer di fama internazionale, mantenendo e sviluppando anche un Centro Studi e ricerche interno all’azienda AL STUDIO, formato da più persone, che ricercano innovazione.

Quest’anno per la prima volta ho firmato due prodotti anche a mio nome in abbinata all’amico Carlo Colombo. Tengo molto a sottolineare che antoniolupi lavora sempre con numerosi designer, ma questo non si nota in quanto tutto sembra disegnato da una sola mano. Questo è ciò che caratterizza la nostra azienda nel mercato. Oggi si parla di stile, eleganza antoniolupi, che viene caratterizzato da attenzione progettuale e coerenza nella proposta.

Quali sono i prodotti ai quali sei più legato?

Era il 2002 quando al Cersaie presentai per la prima volta un bagno total look in Corian. Fu uno straordinario successo, mai nessuno aveva avuto il coraggio di far simili proposte. Successivamente mi sono confrontato con progetti in marmo, pietra, ecc...

Su tutti il mio preferito è BARREL, il primo lavabo monolitico in pietra dalla forma di una botte..... straordinario. Negli anni successivi ho realizzato molti altri prodotti fantastici, come ad esempio il primo lavabo incassato a scomparsa a parete STRAPPO, sullo stesso concetto soffione come il METEO, il progetto del camino CANTO DEL FUOCO .....questi sono alcuni esempi. Sono sicuro che gli ultimi progetti fatti nati con Paolo Ulian INTROVERSO, CONTROVERSO, PIXEL e INTRECCIO resteranno ICONE nella storia del design.

Ci parli della ricerca dell’eccellenza nei materiali?

Stiamo realizzando molti prodotti e progetti di altissima qualità, vogliamo sorprendere il mercato con oggetti ancora più belli di rispetto a tutti quelli realizzati fino ad oggi. Tutto ciò ci è permesso grazie ai materiali di nuova generazione che abbiamo realizzato negli ultimi anni il Flumood nel 2015, il Quarzomood e per ultimo il Cristalmood.

Questi materiali premettono di produrre forme, spessori e dimensioni innovativi che possono solo essere apprezzati dal mercato.

E Cristalmood?

Il Cristalmood è una nuova resina di nostra creazione colorata in massa, frutto della ricerca antoniolupi. Le sue caratteristiche di trasparenza e lucentezza, durezza come il marmo rendono questo materiale adatto per realizzare qualsiasi oggetti non solo da bagno ma anche oggetti per la casa.

Nell’ultima edizione del Salone del Mobile il vostro stand era la galleria espositiva di installazioni in cui l’oggetto era interpretato come un’opera d’arte, perché questa scelta?

Abbiamo scelto una modalità di presentarsi totalmente inedita per noi, siamo un’Azienda di caratura internazionale e punto di riferimento per il mondo del design. Ci siamo quindi spostati dal riferimento commerciale ad uno più culturale. L’allestimento, curato da Calvi Brambilla, aveva un approccio immersivo dello spazio e degli oggetti esposti; una esposizione scenografica e decontestualizzata di alcuni oggetti ‘iconici’ della produzione di antoniolupi, nonché musica e suoni. Una scelta coraggiosa, un traguardo impegnativo per il quale la antoniolupi è ormai pronta.

A quale mercato vi rivolgete?

Designer, architetti, progettista, decoratori ecc… Queste sono le sono le categorie con cui vogliamo confrontarci quotidianamente. Categorie che apprezzano il lavoro di antoniolupi perché possono risolvere i loro problemi con i nostri prodotti.

Le aziende che ce l’hanno fatta sono quelle che hanno puntato sulla qualità e dunque sulla fascia più alta del mercato?

La qualità, design, ricerca, impegno, passione sono le cose importanti affinché ogni azienda possa avere successo.

Perché gli italiani sono bravi nel lusso e nello stile?

Fa parte della nostra tradizione. Viviamo in paese circondati da eccellenza, cibo, design, stile... per questo riusciamo a fare cose che altri non riescono neppure a pensare.

In the latest edition of Salone del Mobile your stand was the exhibition gallery of installations in which the object was interpreted as a work of art. Why this choice?

We chose a way to present ourselves that was completely new for us. We are an international company and a point of reference for the world of design; we therefore moved from a commercial reference to a more cultural one. The set-up, curated by Calvi Brambilla, had an immersive approach to the space and objects on display; a scenographic and decontextualized exhibition of some ‘iconic’ objects of the antoniolupi production, as well as music and sounds. A brave choice, a challenging goal for which antoniolupi is now ready.

Which market do you target?

Designers, architects, planners, decorators, etc. These are the categories we want to deal with on a daily basis. Categories that appreciate the work of antoniolupi because they can solve their problems with our products.

The companies that made it are those that have focused on quality and therefore on the high end of the market?

Quality, design, research, commitment, passion are the important things for any company to become successful.

Why are Italians good at luxury and style?

It is part of our tradition. We live in a country surrounded by excellence, food, design, style... this is why we are able to do things that others cannot even think of.

Design solutions to amplify spaces and, why not, satisfy vanity. Mirror paintings for Pistoletto, a magical consciousness to consult for the Grimm brothers, reflective surfaces have always fascinated and seduced.

La Plus Belle by Flos A magical object halfway between a lamp and a piece of furniture: Philippe Starck creates La Plus Belle for Flos, a new ironic and surreal chapter in the long collaboration between the historic Italian brand and the French designer. So Flos turned on a light around the mirror and Snow White appeared! The Plus Belle is an oval wall mirror, two-metre high, with the light source integrated on the edge.

Beneath its silicone optical diffuser there are hidden special LEDs that increase the uniformity of the diffusion, to create a soft light that can be adjusted with the dimmer with sensor integrated in the mirror. The wall fixing system allows you to hang the mirror like a picture. The back of the mirror is fixed to the wall by a magnetic system.

Così Flos ha acceso una luce intorno allo specchio ed è apparsa Biancaneve’. La Plus Belle è uno specchio ovale da parete, dall’altezza di due metri, con la fonte luminosa integrata sul bordo.

Sotto il suo diffusore in silicone ottico si nascondono LED speciali che aumentano l’uniformità di diffusione della luce morbida e gestibile dal dimmer a sensore integrato nello specchio. Il sistema di fissaggio a parete permette di appendere lo specchio come un quadro. Il retro dello specchio è fissato al muro tramite un sistema magnetico.

The Iride mirrors by Vito Nesta for EXTO Vito Nesta designed for the EXTO brand backlit mirrors presented during the latest Milan Design Week. The Iride mirror collection comes from vintage, out-ofproduction, and low-availability materials, coming from glassworks closing their activity. Ancient materials become the core of modern designs: the Desag glass, now out of production, is an example of this, used for the petals that make up the corolla in the central mirror. The curved and concave elements are the fulcrum of the project, born from laboratory experimentation on the curvature of glass.

La collezione di specchi Iride nasce da materiali vintage, fuori produzione e in esaurimento, provenienti da vetrerie che cessano l’attività. Materiali antichi diventano anima di disegni moderni: ne sono esempio i vetri Desag ormai fuori produzione utilizzati per i petali che costituiscono la corolla allo specchio centrale. Gli elementi curvilinei e concavi sono il fulcro del progetto, nato dalla sperimentazione in laboratorio sulla curvatura del vetro.

Fan by Ghidini 1961 Fan is a mirror inspired by the iconic shape of the classic Japanese fan in its semi-circular opening. An object that in Japanese tradition is not only used to cool down, but also to create a screen between two people, to hide shyness but at the same time, in this case, to be reflected. The structure is entirely made of polished die-cast brass, while in the central part it has a generous mirrored surface.

Fan è uno specchio ispirato alla forma iconica del classico ventaglio giapponese nella sua apertura semicircolare. Un oggetto che nella tradizione giapponese non viene utilizzato solo per fare aria, ma anche per creare un diaframma tra due persone, nascondere la timidezza ma che allo stesso tempo in questo caso permette di riflettersi. La struttura è totalmente realizzata in ottone lucido pressofuso, nella parte centrale invece presenta una generosa superficie specchiata per riflettersi.

Shelf / Authentics.

A minimalistic and clean metal mirror with a rectangular shape in which the shelf is not a separate element placed on the mirror, but on the contrary, it is an integral part. The shelf, which protrudes a few centimetres, coincides with the lower edges with rounded corners. The mirror is the work of a Taiwanese designer, Yun Li. Uno specchio in metallo essenziale e pulito dalla forma rettangolare in cui la mensola non è un elemento a parte inserito sulla specchiera, ma al contrario è parte integrante. La mensola, che sporge di qualche centimetro, coincide con i bordi inferiori dagli spigoli arrotondati. Lo specchio è opera di un designer giapponese, Yun Li.

Killa by Ames Signed by designer Pauline Deltour for ames, the killa mirror collection furnishes and decorates every room of the house. Round or oval, killa is characterized by the frame made by hand, in the province of Narino, obtained from the fibres of the Iraca palm, known for its use in the construction of the Panama cottages. The processing is rather complex: the Iraca fibres obtained from the stems of the leaves are chopped, boiled, washed, and bleached, then dyed with natural dyes obtained from seeds, leaves, nuts, and roots. The exclusive detail of this mirror is its characteristic stitching.

Firmata dalla designer Pauline Deltour per Ames, la collezione di specchi Killa arredano e decorano tutti gli ambienti della casa. Tondo o ovale, Killa si caratterizza per la cornice realizzata a mano, nella provincia di Narino, ricavata dalle fibre della palma Iraca, nota per il suo impiego nella costruzione dei cottage di Panama. La lavorazione è piuttosto complessa: le fibre di Iraca ottenute dagli steli delle foglie vengono sminuzzate, bollite, lavate e sbiancate, poi vengono tinte con coloranti naturali ottenuti da semi, foglie, noci e radici. Il dettaglio esclusivo di questo specchio è la sua caratteristica cucitura.

Let’s start with history. Born in ancient Egypt, the hat, from Latin ‘cappellus’, a small cowl designed to repair the head, passes from Greece, through Asia, to finally reach Europe. Curious is the use of this accessory, which initially serves as a protecting tool, but soon becomes a strong cultural symbol, which places anyone wearing it above the rest. It thusly becomes an expression of creativity and originality, of belonging to an elite social class, for the precious materials from which it was made. From wool felt to the beaver hair of King Charles VII, from feathers to ribbons to buckles, from teased wigs to the sixteenth-century threepointed hat of Louis XIV. The nineteenth century is the century of the male cylinder hat and of the female Tuscan straw hat, but soon it is Alessandria with Giuseppe Borsalino to move the epicentre of hat manufacturing, with the fedora. The art of the hat spreads like wildfire throughout Europe and in the early twentieth century the production of hats is an important branch of the economy that frames the most disparate faces, a symbol of elegance and social prestige. Even today, although the hat market is a niche one, its charm has not been lost. Time ago, ‘never go out without a hat’ was a rule of style of every lady worthy of her name; although those days are long gone, today, (in addition to the straw hats seen on the beaches) the runways of autumn winter 2019 and also those for spring summer 2020, have brought it back in vogue.

È curioso l’utilizzo di questo accessorio, che inizialmente funge da strumento riparatore, ma ben presto diventa un forte simbolo culturale, che colloca al di sopra chiunque lo indossi. L’800 è il secolo del cilindro maschile e della paglia toscana femminile, ma ben presto è Alessandria con Giuseppe Borsalino a spostare l’epicentro della produzione manifatturiera del cappello. L’arte del copricapo si diffonde a macchia d’olio in tutta l’Europa e nei primi anni del XX secolo la produzione di cappelli rappresenta un ramo importante dell’economia che incornicia i volti più disparati, simbolo di eleganza e prestigio sociale. Ancora oggi, sebbene il mercato del cappello rappresenti una fascia di nicchia, non si è perso il suo fascino. Anticamente “non uscire mai senza il cappello” era una regola di stile di ogni signora che si rispettasse; nonostante quei giorni siano lontani, oggi, (oltre ai cappelli di paglia visti sulle spiagge) le passerelle autunno inverno 2019 e anche quelle per la primavera estate 2020, lo hanno visto tornare in auge. Così il cappello, soprattutto quello a falda larga, torna a completare e a definire il look di ogni fashionista. “ F L O AT I N G W O R L D ” AND THE ART OF RAY BARTKUS Valentina Pepe

His installations have been exhibited in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Salzburg, Wroclaw (Poland), Kiev (Ukraine), just to name a few cities; but his latest work is the one that aroused social media interest and fame. The artist Ray Bartkus, Lithuanian but New Yorker by adoption, created a beautiful mural along the outer wall of a house overlooking the Šešupė river, in the city of Marijampolė.

The reason? The mural, designed to use the surface of the water as an additional canvas, was deliberately made upside down so that swimmers, rowers, swans, and the top of a submarine would be reflected on the bed of the waterway in the right direction for those looking from afar, generating a unique optical effect. ‘Floating World’, the upside-down graffiti portrays subjects related to the world of water: some row on a canoe, some swim, some dive into the water, but also swans that let themselves be carried away by the current, and even a cruise ship. The artist said he was immediately inspired by the old mill lying along the river. The project was recently conceived in the context of the Malonny Art Festival, which was attended by street artists from all over the world. In

L’artista Ray Bartkus, lituano ma newyorkese di adozione, ha creato un bel murales lungo la parete esterna di una abitazione affacciata sul fiume Šešupė, nella città di Marijampolė. Il motivo? Il murale, progettato per sfruttare la superficie dell’acqua come tela supplementare, è stato appositamente realizzato al contrario in modo che nuotatori, vogatori, cigni e la parte superiore di un sottomarino venissero riflessi sul letto del corso d’acqua nella giusta direzione per chi osserva da lontano, generando un effetto ottico unico.

L’artista ha dichiarato di essere stato subito ispirato dal vecchio mulino adagiato lungo il fiume. L’intervento è stato concepito di recente nell’ambito del Malonny Art Festival, al quale hanno preso parte street artist provenienti da tutto il mondo. Oltre alla street art, Ray Bartkus impiega e sperimenta media differenti, dal disegno alla pittura, passando per il video, l’installazione e l’illustrazione. Per quanto riguarda le installazioni luminose, alcune di esse sono state realizzate per specifici eventi tra cui concerti, festival ecc. e poi smontate per essere riposte all’interno dei magazzini. Altre, come l’opera “Gardens”, per esempio, sono state acquistate dal MO Museum, un museo di arte contemporanea di Vilnius, e fa parte della sua collezione. L’installazione intitolata “100” è ancora visibile ad Harmony Park in Lituania. È stata realizzata in occasione del centenario della Lituania che cadeva nel 2018. Ho acceso cento alberi nel bosco, ma solo le radici e i rami, mentre i tronchi sono rimasti al buio per raccontare la tragedia dell’occupazione sovietica che è durata per circa mezzo secolo. A proposito dell’installazione “Landing Strip”, infine, quando devo prendere un aereo di notte sono affascinato dalle luci delle città sottostanti, ma purtroppo la vista dura solo pochi minuti, solo per il tempo in cui l’aereo atterra o decolla. Così ho creato quest’opera su una montagna con una finta prospettiva, utilizzando 5 km di fili di luci così che chiunque ora può godere della vista magica della città dall’alto tutto il tempo che lo desidera.

As food I recommend the crostini or taglieri thanks to the selection of local products tested by them.

Do not be fooled by the location in the middle of the university area: L’Ortica is not the usual venue ‘for a drink and go’. The selection of natural wines (purchasable in the shop next door) and craft beers is amazing. Check their Facebook page for the events they organize.

Locale un po’ più defilato dal centro rispetto agli altri ma in cui vale la pena fare un aperitivo. Troverete pochi tavoli ma una buona scelta di cocktail o birre artigianali prodotte da loro, non abbiate paura nel chiedere consigli ai gestori. Shop, enoteca, and above all a (tiny) meeting point where to have an aperitif with cold cuts, cheeses, and some cooked dishes like the Salama da sugo with mashed potatoes with clarified butter. But be careful: go early or reserve, there are only two tables.

The keyword here is veg. In this pleasant little venue you can get lost in the selection of focaccias, mixed cereal dishes like spelt and couscous, vegetables and vegan pies, all with strictly organic beers and wines.

La parola d’ordine, qui, è veg. In questo piacevolissimo posticino potete sbizzarrirvi a ordinare focacce, piatti di cereali misti come farro e cous cous, verdure e torte salate vegane, il tutto insieme a birre e vini rigorosamente bio.

Un gioiellino incastonato fra i portici di Bologna. Very cheap buffet aperitif; I recommend beer and cocktails.

Located in the Archiginnasio building, it is a historical landmark for the Bolognese.

Everyone still considers it to be the Bologna salon par excellence; prominent Bolognese personalities have frequented this bar. This is the ideal place for a luxury aperitif with various tastings and the finest wines. Also, being able to sit at the tables in the Piazza is really special and makes the experience even more flavourful.

Situato nel palazzo dell’Archiginnasio è un punto di riferimento storico per i bolognesi. È ancora per tutti il salotto di Bologna per eccellenza, personaggi di spicco bolognesi hanno frequentato questo bar.

To accompany the drinks, during the aperitif they serve: taglieri (cutting-boards with a selection of cold cuts, cheeses, etc.), crostini, and pinzimonio (Italian-style dipping sauce mainly for crudités). Definitely try one of the cocktails featured in George’s Favourite, a cocktail list created by one of the barmen who works there who was born in New York. Super service!

Ci parli di te?

Con piacere; per tanto tempo ho fatto molta fatica a parlare di me, non ero a mio agio, ultimamente lo sono e lo faccio volentieri perché mi sento finalmente nei miei panni. Sono arrivato a NY nel 2009 armato di molti capelli in più, molto chili in più e pessimi occhiali, di tante speranze e sogni e animato dalla mia proverbiale voglia di fare e dalle mie idee vulcaniche e di espressione, eccomi, al mio giorno zero, per strada nel allora “Piccolo, Piccolissimo Cafe” un banchetto e poco più a Union Square. Oggi ho 86 dipendenti, 5 locali, un’unità di catering, collaborazioni nella moda, musica, cinema ed editoria, Executive Chef dei miei locali e delle più prestigiose aziende Italiane e non solo, dicono affermato Executive Chef, sorrido, penso a mio nonno Gigi e ringrazio tutti i lupini cotti assieme.

Ci racconti come è iniziata la tua avventura newyorchese?

Per caso, per gioco e con quella voglia tutta romagnola di sfida e viaggio, ero in spiaggia e dissi alla madre di mia figlia voglio andare a NY a far caffè, cappuccini e dar da mangiare per strada e se funziona rimaniamo e costruirò un’azienda.

Locali, catering, collaborazioni importanti, quanti dei tuoi sogni hai realizzato; e cosa hai mente per il futuro?

Ho realizzato tanto di quello che ho sognato, il sogno più grande è sentirmi sereno in quello che faccio, questo mi permette di sognare altro e ancora e di vincere quel senso di paura che ho sempre, che hanno tutti e maggiormente chi osa e rilancia.

Il prossimo obiettivo è quello di portare il Piccolo Cafe in tutta America! Ci sto già lavorando, aspetto la sensazione da inseguire.

Fisica, genetica, medicina, nella tua cucina cosa porti di questa visione scientifica?

Il metodo, l’approccio e la sintesi. Tutto e sempre, da quando mi lavo le mani a quando scelgo una ceramica a quando prendo la pentola a quando mi incanto nella lama di un coltello fino al momento del lavaggio dei piatti. Non ho mai pensato la cucina potesse esistere senza la premessa e la coscienza scientifica.

Come ti immagini il cibo del futuro?

Pochi ingredienti e molta tecnica in pochi gesti naturali, accorti e candidi, lo immagino come una grande produzione in atto semplice, lo Chef è un produttore, l’executive Chef è un grandissimo produttore esecutivo, tra cinema e cucina non c’è differenza.

Come si coniuga l’innovazione con la tradizione?

Nel mio caso vanno di pari passo, diciamo che l’innovazione è, come lo sono i miei occhiali, la lente per rivedere e godersi la vera tradizione.

Cos’è il talento?

Gli ingredienti di cui non potresti fare a meno?

Ride (ndr.) non mi sembra di esagerare, se non lo facessi imploderei, ho costante e naturale bisogno di esprimermi e detonarmi e non mi costa fatica anzi l’opposto.

Il tuo mantra?

Da sempre: “Volli, e volli sempre, e fortissimamente volli!”

Ci parli di Lucciola, il tuo nuovo progetto?

Lucciola è il mio nuovo ristorante, il mio primo film da produttore esecutivo! Lucciola è un tributo nell’atmosfera e arredo a “Festa di Laurea” di Pupi Avati e dedica a Nik Novecento. Tributo all’ospitale Emilia Romagna, al cinema che amo, ai protagonisti della mia crescita e del mio mondo artistico, fotografico e culinario. Lucciola ospita tanti ricordi e una collaborazione artistica per una parete e il logo con l’artista pluripremiato Marco Gallotta; proprio in questi giorni dalle nostre idee è nata una linea di calze per Gatti a Pois, due modelli per ora, Lucciola & Lucciola NYC. Lucciola è il prodotto di tanti amici che mi hanno fisicamente aiutato da lontano e in loco a costruirla, a realizzarla, è la mia nave, invoca tutta la mia vulnerabilità e confida nell’equilibrio.

#STOPUSEPLASTIC Valentina Pepe Reducing and then eliminating plastic from our daily lives is a good goal. It can be done; it must be done. All together.

Ridurre e poi eliminare dal nostro quotidiano la plastica è un buon obiettivo. Si può fare, si deve fare. Tutti insieme.

The battle to eliminate plastic and reduce waste has begun, so artists and brands marry the campaign that seeks to clean up beaches, seas, and the planet. We can probably preserve some hope for a future, against the most catastrophic forecasts that had already predicted our doom, provided we start immediately, join forces and change habits. Plastic has changed our world, allowing the production of low-cost, light, colourful, unbreakable goods, with unique technical characteristics that have allowed their diffusion. Its great fame has however become a problem, since it comes from oil and it can pollute after use. It is also used for packaging and objects that are used only for a few minutes and then, in most cases, remain in the environment for centuries, degrading slowly, entering directly into our food chain. The masses of plastic fragments that float in the oceans and the beaches covered with old bottles and pieces of fishing nets are images we all have in mind when we talk about plastic pollution. Some important measures have been taken to reduce these phenomena. Unlike what the name may evoke, the Plastic Free Challenge is not one of those challenges that spread on social media with videos and hashtags. This time the challenge starts from above and comes from a realization and a stance taken by the institutions; in particular, the use of disposable plastic objects is no longer sustainable and, in reality, never was, in terms of resources used for production, disposal, and recycling. The measures gradually adopted are in line with the EU directive which, starting from 2021, will prohibit the production and sale of disposable plastics in all the member countries of the European Union. But not just that. Because with the SalvAmare law, approved 4 April 2019, even the collection of plastic at sea will become a simple and natural action. In fact, fishermen will finally be able to recover the plastic that gets caught in their nets from the sea and bring it to land for disposal centres, instead of throwing it back into the water as they were forced to do

by law before this law was approved. These political initiatives are joined by the increasing number of anti-waste movements, such as zero wasters, i.e. people who try not to produce waste and who have renounced plastic forever in their daily lives, but also people who buy used items without contributing to a new production through days dedicated to the barter of goods in good condition; groups dedicated to plogging, the sport in which, while you run, you also collect the waste found along the way to throw it away.

And also company offices and universities, who give aluminium water bottles for free to counteract the purchase of disposable plastic bottles; beaches and bathing establishments that have chosen to protect their ecosystems. But in addition to these useful initiatives, what can we do for a plastic-free world? In our daily lives: use fabric bags instead of single-use ones, even for non-food purchases; use water filter pitchers for tap water or water bottles and thermoses for transport instead of disposable bottles. Glass and aluminium are easily washable and reusable, unlike PET. Use dishes, glasses, and cutlery in ceramic or durable plastic, if you can wash them, or in disposable material certified as biodegradable. Make sure that the coffee machine in the office no longer dispenses plastic cups and instead uses ceramic or glass cups; use glass containers for storing food, which are washable and reusable. For the washing machine use little detergent, go for the liquid one, wash at low temperatures, wash less frequently.

Move toward clothes made of natural fibres such as cotton, wool, linen, hemp fibre, silk, and minimize synthetic garments. For cosmetics, choose those that do not contain micro plastics.

#Trends La battaglia per eliminare la plastica e ridurre gli sprechi è iniziata, così artisti e brand sposano la campagna che cerca di ripulire le spiagge i mari e il pianeta. Probabilmente contro i pronostici dei più catastrofici, che già ci davano per spacciati, una speranza di futuro possiamo conservarla, a patto di iniziare subito, di unire le forze e cambiare le abitudini. La plastica ha cambiato il nostro mondo, permettendo la produzione di beni a basso costo, leggeri, colorati, infrangibili, con caratteristiche tecniche uniche che hanno permesso la loro diffusione. La sua grande fama è diventata però un problema, visto che proviene dal petrolio e dopo l’utilizzo può inquinare. Viene utilizzata anche per imballaggi e oggetti che vengono utilizzati solo per pochi minuti e poi, nella maggior parte dei casi, restano nell’ambiente per secoli, degradandosi a poco a poco, entrando direttamente nella nostra catena alimentare. Le masse di frammenti di plastica che galleggiano negli oceani e le spiagge coperte di vecchie bottiglie e pezzetti di reti da pesca sono immagini che tutti abbiamo in mente quando parliamo di inquinamento da plastica. Alcune importanti misure sono state prese per ridurre questi fenomeni. Diversamente da quello che il nome può evocare, la Plastic Free Challenge non è una di quelle challenge che si diffondono sui social a suon di video e hashtag. Stavolta la sfida parte dall’alto e nasce da una presa di coscienza da parte delle istituzioni; in particolare, l’utilizzo di oggetti di plastica monouso non è più sostenibile e in realtà non lo è mai stato. in termini di risorse impiegate per la produzione, smaltimento e avvio al riciclo. Le misure man mano adottate sono in linea con la direttiva comunitaria che, a partire dal 2021 vieterà produzione e commercializzazione della plastica monouso in tutti i Paesi membri dell’Unione europea. Ma non solo.

Perché con la legge SalvAmare, approvata il 4 aprile 2019, anche la raccolta della plastica in mare diventerà un’azione semplice e

naturale. Infatti, i pescatori potranno finalmente recuperare la plastica che dal mare si impiglia nelle loro reti e portarla a terra per destinarla ai centri di smaltimento, invece di ributtarla in acqua come invece erano costretti a fare per legge prima dell’approvazione della legge. A queste iniziative politiche si affiancano i sempre più numerosi movimenti anti-spreco, come gli zero waster, ovvero le persone che cercano di non produrre rifiuti e che hanno rinunciato per sempre alla plastica nella loro vita quotidiana, ma anche le persone che acquistano oggetti usati senza contribuire a una nuova produzione attraverso giornate dedicate al baratto di beni in buono stato, i gruppi che si dedicano al plogging, lo sport in cui, mentre si corre, si raccolgono anche i rifiuti trovati lungo il percorso per gettarli via. E ancora uffici di aziende e atenei universitari, che regalano borracce in alluminio per evitare l’acquisto di bottigliette in plastica monouso, e spiagge e stabilimenti balneari che hanno scelto di proteggere i propri ecosistemi. Ma oltre queste utili iniziative cosa possiamo fare per un mondo plastic free? Nel quotidiano: utilizzare sacchetti in tessuto invece di quelli monouso, anche per gli acquisti non alimentari, utilizzare brocche da tavola per l’acqua del rubinetto oppure borracce e thermos per il trasporto invece delle bottigliette. Vetro e alluminio sono lavabili e riutilizzabili facilmente, a differenza del PET. Utilizzare piatti, bicchieri e posate in ceramica o plastica durevole, se si ha la possibilità di lavarli, oppure in materiale monouso certificato come biodegradabile. Fare in modo che la macchinetta del caffè in ufficio non eroghi più i bicchierini di plastica e usare invece tazze di ceramica o vetro, preferire contenitori per riporre il cibo in vetro, lavabili e riutilizzabili. Per la lavatrice utilizzare poco detersivo, preferire quello liquido, lavare a basse temperature, lavare meno. Preferire vestiti in fibre naturali quali cotone, lana, lino, canapa, seta e ridurre al minimo i capi sintetici. Nei prodotti di bellezza scegliere quelli che non contengono micro plastiche.

NICOLA BOTTEGAL Art director Born in 1965, he lives between Vicenza and Ibiza. In the mid-80s he began working as an advertising agent and went on to open his own agency later. In 2011 he approached the themes of design and furnishing, and founded, together with a team of young and valuable collaborators, Londonart: a laboratory of ideas that creates exclusive wallpapers. Today he is the art director and designer of the company that boasts multiple collections and which collaborates with the most important national and international designers. Thanks to the tenacity and creative vision of Londonart, which involves art, fashion and music, today it is considered a reference brand in the sector.

Nato nel 1965, vive tra Vicenza ed Ibiza. A metà degli anni 80 inizia a lavorare come pubblicitario per aprire succesivamente una sua agenzia. Nel 2009 si avvicina ai temi del design e dell’arredamento fondando, insieme ad un team di giovani e validi collaboratori, Londonart: un laboratorio di idee che crea wallpaper esclusivi.

MAURIZIO LAI Architect Architect and designer Maurizio Lai was born in Padua in 1965 and studied Architecture in Venice and Milan. He started his career as set designer for the national TV broadcasters, while working on retail and display concepts for major luxury brands, such as Longines, Montblanc and Gucci, among others. Soon after he would begin his collaboration with Ventaglio Travels Group and The Club Med, to develop international hospitality and tourism related projects. In 1998 he founded LAISTUDIO in Milan.

Consisting of a team of architects, engineers and designers the Studio promotes synergies of expression, approaching the design process in a distinguished original way, which determine the production of rather impacting concepts for the retail, commercial and hospitality industry, as well as for private residential projects and developments. An original interpreter of contemporary aesthetics, Maurizio Lai’s work is defined by an instinctive approach, which certainly reflects in the originality of his lighting creations. His style has been described as one of the most interesting in the Italian contemporary scene. Along with the creativity, the years-long experience with the high-end design manufacturing process and a strong network of trusted construction partners enables the Studio to deliver detailed, bespoke and beautifully crafted projects worldwide. Maurizio Lai’s work has been recognized with prestigious acknowledgments through time, his work is featured in the most authoritative architecture and design publications.

L’idea di poter personalizzare uno spazio e renderlo parte attiva della nostra vita, è sempre stata una sua grande fonte d’ispirazione.

RICCARDO ZULATO Graphic desginer Born in Noventa Vicentina in July 1985, he attended the Technical Institute of Aeronautics in Vicenza. Multi-instrumentalist, with a punk nature, plays guitar, bass and saxophone. The eclectic and never predictable character makes him approach the world of illustrated art and design: in 2009 he obtains the diploma in Advertising Graphics with the highest marks. Subsequently he deepens his passion for fonts, printing press and screen printing at Marco Campedelli’s Studio in Sommacampagna, immediately immersed in the most practical area of work. In 2011 he crosses the road of Nicola Bottegal, founder of Londonart: the love for the figurative, the lettering, the illustration, the tattoo, his expertise in graphic advertising mixed with the world of home decor brings Zulato to print the first wallpaper and in 2012 the first catalogue of the newborn brand. Today, Riccardo Zulato takes care of the graphic design, the most peculiar projects, the press releases in newspapers and TV programmes, as well as the models for the brand’s new collections. The distinctly organized nature also leads him to interact with a team of external designer such as Laviani, Salmistraro, Castrignano, Gallizia, Colombo and others, up to the complete processing of the wallpapers and, last but not least,dealing with problem solving in the production phase.

FEDERICO GREGOLO Interior designer Born in 1994, graduated at the European Institute of Design in Milan with a thesis on Interior Design, he faces the graphic world; take into consideration his architecture studies to model various settings in the decorative field, from 2018 he works for LondonArt, combining his passions for art and architecture.

Classe 1994, diplomato all’Istituto Europeo di Design di Milano con una tesi sull’Interior Design, si affaccia inizialmente al mondo grafico; tenendo in considerazione i suoi studi di architettura d’interni per modellare varie ambientazioni in ambito decorativo, dal 2018 lavora per LondonArt, combinando le sue passioni per l’arte e l’architettura.

DAVIDE MAROTTA Graphic desginer Born in Verona on 3rd May 1990, he takes inspiration from art in all its forms. Musician and lover of analogic photography, he is trained as a Graphic Designer in Verona where he ranges between web, brand design and typography, always maintaining an impact visual identity.From 2018 he works in the LondonArt team as a Graphic Designer, facing each project creatively and drawing inspiration from everything that surrounds him.

Nato nel luglio del 1985 a Noventa Vicentina, frequenta l’Istituto Tecnico Aeronautico di Vicenza. Polistrumentista dall’indole punk, suona sassofono chitarra e basso. Un’indole eterogenea e mai scontata lo fa avvicinare al mondo del disegno e dell’arte illustrata: nel 2009 consegue con il massimo dei voti il diploma in Grafica Pubblicitaria e, successivamente, approfondisce la passione per font, stampa a torchio e serigrafia al Marco Campedelli Studio di Sommacampagna, immergendosi immediatamente nell’ambito più pratico del lavoro. Un mix non convenzionale di competenze, tutte legate con un fil rouge all’amore per il figurativo, il lettering, l’illustrazione e il tattoo lo porta, nel 2011, a incrociare la strada di Nicola Bottegal, fondatore di Londonart. Nel 2011 stampa la prima carta da parati e, nel 2012, il primo catalogo di prodotto del neonato brand, fondendo così la sua competenza in grafica advertising al mondo dell’home decor. Oggi, Riccardo Zulato cura la veste grafica del brand, i progetti più peculiari, le uscite stampa su giornali e programmi tv, oltre all’art delle nuove collezioni. L’indole spiccatamente organizzativa lo porta anche a interfacciarsi con il team di designer di grido esterni - Laviani, Salmistraro, Castrignano, Gallizia, Colombo e gli altri - fino all’elaborazione in toto delle carte da parati, occupandosi anche del problem solving nella fase produttiva.

Nato a Verona il 3 Maggio 1990, trae ispirazione dall’arte in tutte le sue forme. Musicista ed amante della fotografia analogica, si forma come Graphic Designer a Verona dove spazia tra web, brand design e tipografia, mantenendo sempre un’identità visiva d’impatto. BENEDETTA SIMONE Graphic desginer Graphic Designer born in Vicenza (Italy) in 1992. She attended the three-years course of Graphic Design at Istituto Design Palladio in Verona. Benedetta is deeply passionate about tipography, illustration, graphic design, logos, paper, colours, photography, painting and drawing. Every project is a new challenge.
