The time has come for a rebirth: the Salone del Mobile is coming back, with the promise of being a Super Salone, thanks to a new concept, an exceptional curatorship, and to the fact that it is the first major exhibition to reopen its doors, to reaffirm the centrality of Milan in the international scene of design, culture, and innovation. The ‘supersalone’ surely bears a very auspicious name and logo that become the programmatic manifesto of the event. A momentous occasion, a once-in-a-lifetime moment, one with great and immediate attractive and communicative force. The proposed format is that of a large design library, whose setting will harmonize the innovations and creations of the companies with their products, also thanks to the debut of the digital platform of the Salone del Mobile. Londonart will be there in Rho at the fair with a dedicated installation, a special project designed specifically for the event that will offer the opportunity to admire the wallpapers in 3D, for a new wallpaper experience. But the company will also be at the Fuorisalone, in the Milanese showroom in Piazza San Marco with a new exhibition dedicated to Collection 21. In this issue of the MAG you can browse and enjoy all the latest Londonart news, in a versatile collection full of ideas. After the capsule created for Londonart by Gio Pagani, The Daydreamer, presented last April for a Design Week stolen from the red zone, for this September edition there is lots of news and many collaborations that expand the cast of creative talents. New studios and new designers renowned internationally who collaborated with major brands in the design scene. In this eleventh issue you can read the in-depth interviews with all the protagonists to fully understand their approach to wallpapers and their design aesthetics. As always, the issue is enriched by many articles that look to autumn with a sparkling melancholy, from preserves, to journeys among the wonders and colours of foliage, up to new trends like electric blue and fashions that are making a comeback, like the tie (for women as well).

Tempo di rinascita, il Salone del Mobile riparte, con la promessa di essere un Super Salone, grazie al nuovo concept, a una curatela di eccezione e al fatto di essere la prima grande mostra a riaprire i battenti, per riaffermare la centralità di Milano nel panorama internazionale del progetto, della cultura e dell’innovazione. Certo che “supersalone” vanta un nome e un logo di grande auspicio che si fanno manifesto programmatico dell’evento. Un unicum, un momento irripetibile, di grande e immediata forza attrattiva e comunicativa. Il format proposto è quello di una grande biblioteca del design, la cui scenografia armonizzerà le novità e le creazioni delle aziende con i loro prodotti anche grazie al debutto della piattaforma digitale del Salone del Mobile. Londonart sarà presente a Rho in fiera con un’istallazione dedicata, uno special project pensato proprio per l’evento che offrirà la possibilità di ammirare le carte in versione 3D per una nuova esperienza del wallpaper. Ma l’azienda sarà anche al fuorisalone nello showroom milanese di Piazza San Marco con un nuovo allestimento dedicato alla Collection 21. In questo numero del MAG potrete sfogliare e godere tutte le ultime novità di Londonart, in una collezione versatile e ricca di spunti. Infatti dopo la capsule creata per Londonart da Gio Pagani, The Daydreamer, presentata lo scorso aprile in occasione di una designweek rubata alla zona rossa, per questa edizione di settembre sono tante le novità e le collaborazioni che vanno ad amplificare il partèrre di creativi. Nuovi studi e nuovi designer dal talento internazionale, che vantano collaborazioni con i principali brand nel panorama del design. In questo undicesimo numero potrete leggere le interviste di approfondimento a tutti i protagonisti per comprendere appieno il loro approccio al wallpaper e loro estetica progettuale. EXCLUSIVEWALLPAPER 21 The new Exclusive Wallpaper collection by London art stands out for its eclectic, ornamental character expressed through a distinct compositional balance, stylistic combinations, and completely different textures that share a common inspiration on forms and perspective. The new subjects in the collection conform to the evolution of contemporary living, introducing unprecedented decorative possibilities. Designed as truly fascinating backgrounds at a domestic scale, this year’s wallpapers are a whirlwind of dreamlike representations, tassels, fringes, nature-inspired patterns, oneiric interpretations of landscapes and architecture, nuances and volumes that can revolutionise space in the name of colour. Symbol and expression of daily living, the proposed solutions glide like dresses through furniture and accessories, reiterating the strong link that unites design and fashion, as well as the one that underpins the eternal relationship with art. This is why urgent geometries play a leading role, vibrant on the chromatic contrast alongside more poetic representations of floral bouquets and bucolic shades. La nuova collezione Exclusive Wallpapar firmata Londonart si distingue per il suo carattere eclettico e decorativo, espresso da uno spiccato equilibrio compositivo, commistioni stilistiche e texture completamente diverse che condividono una comune ispirazione su forme e prospettiva. I nuovi soggetti in collezione assecondano l’evoluzione dell’abitare contemporaneo introducendo inedite possibilità di decoro. Immaginate come veri e propri sfondi di grande suggestione a dimensione domestica, le carte da parati di quest’anno sono un turbinio di rappresentazioni sognanti, nappe, frange, pattern ispirati alla natura, interpretazioni oniriche di paesaggi e architetture, nuance e volumi capaci di rivoluzionare lo spazio all’insegna del colore. Simbolo ed espressione del vivere quotidiano, le soluzioni proposte, scivolano come abiti tra mobili e complementi, ribadendo il forte legame che unisce il design alla moda, come quello che sottende l’eterna relazione con l’arte.

New formula and new exhibit system for the Super-Salone: first of all, there will be no stands, and the best word to describe this system is ‘wall’ because it is an element that develops in length and height, measured in linear metres, not square.

In this context, Londonart decided to create a special project, designed specifically for the super-salone. So, from the creativity of the graphic team with the artistic direction of Nicola Bottegal, comes Stereoscopic, a new way of observing the wallpapers from Collection 21. For Stereoscopic, we selected three wallpapers from the new collection, very different from one another in terms of signature and mood; the original designs were treated with the stereoscopic technique. During the event, the spectator will have disposable glasses available to enjoy the view; the effect will be extremely interesting, as if they could actually venture into the landscape, vegetation, or observe the relief decorations on the wall. Stereoscopy is a technique based on the study of binocular vision, the only one capable of giving the perception of depth of the real world around us. The stereoscopic image therefore produces an optical illusion capable of deceiving the eye with a mirage of depth. The result is a three-dimensional view, as the brain processes such data and obtains information about the spatial position of the image itself. An innovative and site-specific project that shows Londonart’s desire to go beyond the simple exhibition of wallpapers, offering an unconventional vision that is in line with the brand’s identity.

Nuova formula e nuovo sistema espositivo per il Super-Salone innanzitutto non ci saranno gli stand e la parola migliore per descrivere questo sistema è “parete” perché si tratta di un elemento che si sviluppa in lunghezza e altezza, qualificato in metri lineari e non quadrati. In questo contesto Londonart ha deciso di creare un progetto speciale, pensato ad hoc per il super-salone. Così dalla creatività del team grafico con la direzione artistica di Nicola Bottegal nasce Stereoscopic, un nuovo modo di osservare le carte da parati della Collection 21. Per Stereoscopic sono stati selezionati tre wallpaper della nuova collezione molto diversi tra loro per firma e mood, i disegni originali sono stati trattati con la tecnica stereoscopica. Durate l’evento, lo spettatore avrà degli occhiali monouso a disposizione per godere della visione, l’effetto sarà estremamente interessante, proprio come entrare nel paesaggio, nella vegetazione o osservare i decori a rilievo sulla parete. La stereoscopia è una tecnica che si basa sullo studio della visione binoculare, l’unica in grado di restituire la percezione della profondità del mondo reale che ci circonda. L’immagine stereoscopica fornisce dunque, un’illusione ottica in grado di ingannare l’occhio con un miraggio di spessore. Il risultato è una visione tridimensionale in quanto il cervello elabora tali dati traendo informazioni circa la posizione spaziale dell’immagine stessa. Un progetto innovativo e site-specific che testimonia la volontà di Londonart di andare oltre la semplice esposizione di wallpaper, proponendo una visione inconsueta che è in linea con l’identità del brand.

You were a fashion designer for Fiorucci, Basile, Plain Sud, Sergio Rossi, Camper. What memories has the fashion world leave you with and how much of it can be found in your creations?

Fashion was my first creative gym. It is a world that captures changes and translates them into projects by working with the most skilled craftsmen; it stimulates curiosity and attention to everything and everyone without preconceptions.

Tell us about your Couture collections The Couture collection was born from the need to express myself in total freedom, looking for a way to combine my experience in fashion with my experience in design. Couture was born spontaneously and is giving me great satisfaction: among our customers there are brands such as Louis Vuitton and Pomellato, the King of Morocco Muhammad, and the most important international interior design studios.

You have collaborated with various internationally known companies such as Alessi, Dedon, Moooi, Dilmos, Pomellato, Editions Milano, Colè, Tato, Slamp, Slide. Which project do you feel most attached to?

To my first project: Cuore Caldo, my debut in the world of design.

Life is made of encounters. Who has always supported you and helped you become one of the most successful designers?

I come from a family of architects, musicians, and engineers; the influence of an artistic world is what formed me the most. Then of course all the companies I worked with supported me and allowed me to express myself and grow professionally; all collaborations came first of all from friendships and mutual esteem. Then my designer friends, with whom I love to exchange ideas.

Is design still a predominantly male world? Or has something changed?

Yes, design is still a predominantly male world. However, in the last ten years it has become more fluid and there is more attention and interest toward the female interpretation of design.

Your wallpapers for Londonart presented in the 2021 collection are inspired by poufs. Was it exciting to see your fringes become wallpaper?

Very exciting, also because compared to poufs and mirrors where the fringes are a decorative element, here they become the protagonists and expand the Couture offer to the world of interiors, which will soon be followed by furnishing fabrics and rugs.

In 2013, with the Fedro chair designed for Dedon you won the European Award for Excellent Sustainable Design organized by the European Economic and Social Committee. Besides official awards, what has been the most important recognition so far?

More than the awards, what matters is the appreciation of the public.

Would you be able to describe your style in three words?

Two are enough: ‘Free style’.

Now everyone talks about energy, technological innovation, recycling: do you think these elements could bring new ideas to design?

The challenge is certainly linked to the concept of sustainability; quality is the first requirement for a non-disposable design.

Lorenza Bozzoli was born in Milan. She attended the Academy of Brera, and moved to New York to kick-off her career in the fashion field with her first self-produced lines. Upon returning to Milan she soon started working with Elio Fiorucci and companies like Basile, Camper, Sergio Rossi, Plein Sud. Her interest then moved toward the world of interior design, and she started articulating her work through a vast series of collaborations with big brands such as Alessi, Moooi, Dedon, Pomellato, LondonArt, Ghidini 1961, Dilmos, Editions Milano, Mingardo, Slamp,Tato Italia, Colè. Lorenza currently lives and works in Milan.

Hai lavorato come stilista con Fiorucci, Basile, Plain Sud, Sergio Rossi, Camper. Che ricordo hai del mondo della moda e quanto è presente nelle tue creazioni?

La moda è stata la mia prima palestra creativa. È un mondo sensibile a captare i cambiamenti e a tradurli in progetti lavorando con i più abili artigiani, stimola la curiosità e l’attenzione verso tutto e tutti senza preconcetti.

La vita è fatta di incontri, chi ti ha sempre supportata e ti ha permesso di arrivare ad essere tra le designer più affermate?

Vengo da una famiglia di architetti, musicisti ed ingegneri, l’influenza di un mondo artistico è ciò che mi ha formato maggiormente. Poi sicuramente mi hanno supportato tutte la aziende con cui ho lavorato che mi hanno permesso di esprimermi e di crescere professionalmente, tutte collaborazioni nate prima di tutto da rapporti di amicizia e stima oltre che i miei amici designer con cui amo confrontarmi.

Nel 2013 hai vinto il premio European Award for Excellent Sustainable Design indetto dal Comitato economico e sociale europeo con la sedia Fedro disegnata per Dedon.

Oltre i riconoscimenti ufficiali, qual è stato il riconoscimento più importante fino ad ora?

Più che i premi quello che conta è l’apprezzamento del pubblico.

Riesci a definire il tuo stile in tre parole?

Ne potrebbero bastare due: “Free style”.

La collezione Couture è nata dal bisogno di esprimermi in totale libertà cercando la strada dove unire la mia esperienza nella moda con quella del design. Couture è nata spontaneamente e mi sta dando grandi soddisfazioni, tra i nostri clienti ci sono brand come Louis Vuitton e Pomellato, il Re del Marocco Muhammad e i più importanti studi internazionali di interior.

Il design è ancora un mondo “maschile”? O qualcosa è cambiato?

Sì, il design è ancora un mondo prevalentemente maschile. Tuttavia negli ultimi dieci anni è diventato più fluido e c’è più attenzione ed interesse verso l’interpretazione femminile del design.

I tuoi wallpaper per Londonart presentati nella collection 2021 nascono dai pouf, è stato emozionante vedere le tue frange diventare carta da parati?

Ora si parla di energia, innovazione tecnologica, riciclo: pensi che questi elementi possono portare al design nuovi spunti?

La sfida è sicuramente legata al concetto di sostenibilità, la qualità è il primo requisito per un design non “usa e getta”.

Quale materiale senti più tuo?

I tessuti.

Molto, anche perchè rispetto ai pouf e agli specchi dove le frange sono un elemento decorativo qui sono diventate protagoniste e ampliano la proposta Couture al mondo dell’interior a cui presto seguiranno i tessuti di arredo e i tappeti.

Cosa ti piacerebbe progettare?

Un albergo.

In nature, every season brings something special, but autumn gives us something truly unique: a triumph of colours, which transforms forests into beautiful paintings. Foliage, this is the name of the phenomenon whereby the leaves turn red, yellow, and orange, and it is certainly one of the reasons why it is worth enjoying the autumn season to the fullest. You might hear some Italians pronounce it as if it was a French term, but it is of English origin. The word has entered the Italian vocabulary and more and more people organize trips to admire the wonderful sight of leaves in autumn. The most popular destinations are in Canada and North America (especially New England), but there are small natural paradises even in Italy, where you can admire the splendid colours of nature in the months of October and November. From Abruzzo, with its mountainous landscape and its wild nature, to Tuscany, with its hills shaded by earthy tones – you can enjoy the foliage basically everywhere in Italy. In the north, among the most beautiful landscapes covered with leaves are the Piacenza hills, which in autumn turn into a sea of colours. Trees and shrubs create plays of colours in which you get lost. The gentle slopes facilitate the show, ideal for an excursion with the whole family, on foot or by bike. Another landscape you cannot miss is that of the Piedmontese Langhe, full of vineyards, another reason why they are one of the best destinations to admire the autumn foliage.

The hilly area between the provinces of Cuneo and Asti is ideal for those who want to combine the wonders of Indian summer with the flavours of the local food and wine excellences, tasting truffles and drinking Barolo in the numerous wineries in the area while admiring the enchanted setting of the Piedmontese woods in autumn. But to learn more about the region, there is also the ‘Foliage Train’, with its evocative, slow, and enchanted journey among the autumn landscapes of a slice of Italy that is still too little known. The keyword is slowness, because today in the rush of our everyday life we ​​often forget to slow down.

And what better vehicle than a train for this slow journey? The historical Centovalli–Vigezzina railway (inaugurated in 1923) offers an itinerary that, during the autumn months, crosses evocative landscapes that will make you look at the Piedmontese valleys with entirely new eyes. The Alpine railway par excellence stretches for 52 kilometres and connects Domodossola, in the upper Piedmont, to Switzerland’s Locarno, on Lake Maggiore. The slow white and blue Centovalli–Vigezzina train crosses 83 bridges and 31 tunnels in about two hours, passing through valleys, woods, and small mountain villages. Even just above Courmayeur, in the shadow of Mont Blanc, Val Ferret is one of the places where trees and leaves produce a spectacular foliage. Especially in October this valley, full of hiking trails in the woods, is ideal for enjoying the show. So, get your backpacks ready to enjoy the poetry of nature; also, observing the warm and comforting autumn shades not only gives aesthetic pleasure, but also produces a calming effect.

In natura, ogni stagione ha qualcosa di speciale, ma l’autunno ci dà qualcosa di veramente unico: un tripudio di colori, che trasforma i boschi in bellissimi quadri. È il foliage, così si chiama il fenomeno per cui le foglie diventano rosse, gialle e arancioni, ed è sicuramente uno dei motivi per cui vale la pena vivere appieno la stagione autunnale. Si tratta di un fenomeno che ha origine oltre oceano e il termine, contrariamente a quanto si potrebbe pensare, è inglese, non francese come viene pronunciato spesso. Tuttavia questa parola è entrata nel nostro vocabolario e sono sempre di più le persone che organizzano viaggi per ammirare lo spettacolo delle foglie in autunno.

Le mete più gettonate si trovano in Canada e nord America (New England soprattutto). Ma ci sono piccoli paradisi naturali anche in Italia dove è possibile ammirare gli splendidi colori della natura nei mesi di ottobre e novembre. Dall’Abruzzo con il suo paesaggio montuoso e la sua natura selvaggia, alla Toscana con le sue colline sfumate dai toni terrosi, in Italia, si può godere del foliage un po’ ovunque. Al nord tra i più bei paesaggi ricoperti da foglie ci sono, i colli piacentini, che in autunno si trasformano in una distesa di colori. Alberi e arbusti creano giochi di colori nei quali perdersi.

Facilitano lo spettacolo le dolci pendenze, ideali per un’escursione con tutta la famiglia, a piedi o in bici. Altro paesaggio da non perdere è quello delle langhe piemontesi ricche di vigne, anche per questo costituiscono una delle mete migliori per ammirare il foliage autunnale. L’area collinare compresa tra le province di Cuneo e Asti è ideale per chi vuole unire allo spettacolo dell’estate indiana i sapori delle eccellenze enogastronomiche del territorio, gustando il tartufo e bevendo il Barolo, nelle numerose cantine che si trovano in zona ammirando la cornice incantata dei boschi piemontesi in autunno. Ma per approfondire la regione, esiste anche il “Treno del Foliage” col suo suggestivo viaggio, lento e incantato, tra i paesaggi autunnali di uno spicchio d’Italia ancora troppo poco conosciuto. La parola d’ordine è lentezza, perché oggi nella fretta della vita quotidiana spesso non ci si ricorda di rallentare. E quale mezzo, se non il treno per questo lento viaggio? La storica ferrovia Centovalli – Vigezzina (inaugurata nel 1923) propone un itinerario che attraversa, durante i mesi autunnali, paesaggi suggestivi che vi faranno scoprire un volto completamente diverso delle valli piemontesi. La ferrovia alpina per eccellenza si estende per ben 52 chilometri e collega Domodossola, nell’alto Piemonte, alla svizzera Locarno, sul Lago Maggiore. Il lento treno bianco e blu della Centovalli – Vigezzina attraversa in circa due ore 83 ponti e 31 gallerie passando tra le valli, i boschi e i piccoli borghi di montagna. Anche poco sopra Courmayeur, all’ombra del Monte Bianco, la Val Ferret è uno dei luoghi in cui alberi e foglie regalano un foliage spettacolare. Soprattutto nel mese di ottobre questa valle, ricca di sentieri escursionistici nei boschi, è ideale per godersi lo spettacolo. Quindi zaino in spalla e pronti a godesi la poesia della natura, in più, l’osservazione delle calde e confortanti tonalità autunnali non procura solo un piacere estetico ma ha anche un effetto calmante.

You manage to create very charming interiors.

What do you start from in the creative process?

What is the spark that ignites it?

Generally, each of us carries out a personal study by drawing on our own references that range from art to cinema, from literature to everyday life. Basically, we have three similar methodological approaches but with very different inspirational bases. This lets us influence one another, finding shared points and inspirations.

How do you translate the experiments into practical projects that are part of a long-term vision for your studio?

STORAGEMILANO is an architecture and design studio founded in Milan in 2002 by Barbara Ghidoni, Marco Donati and Michele Pasini. STORAGEMILANO works in different areas of design, from the architectural scale to the product, with constant attention to composition and details, as well as materials and forms. The approach is based on the search for new aesthetic and spatial solutions, customized for the client, which are able to restore the balance of a design that is attentive to content and expression. With the experience gained in these years of practice, we have managed to find a design method that allows us, together with the customers, to transform their desires and our visions/experiments into architectural spaces that are both functional and ‘poetic’. We also try to make our projects timeless, where instead of losing their aesthetic content by aging, they instead mature through the oxidation of primary and natural materials. The compositional simplicity in combination with these materials creates a space that is always different and that changes over time while remaining faithful to the original project.

How do you assign tasks and skills?

We do not have a real division by skills. During the first creative phase we try to work all together and then the natural evolution of the project and the commitments of each person ensure that along the design path one of us takes the lead of the team. It is a fairly natural and unconscious process.

What is new about your wallpapers designed for Londonart?

I’d say this question should be for Londonart. We believe that our interpretation of wallpaper is more architectural and less decorative, as much as possible considering that wallpaper is by all means a decoration. We imagine that through the application of our wallpapers you add architecture and not decoration, that a new way of reading the space forms where they are applied.

They are ‘material’ wallpapers. What context do they suit best? In what environment did you imagine them?

In all honesty, we did not think of specific spaces.

The exercise we did was to imagine them for our personal use or for our project. Each of us has imagined them in our own spaces; we have proposed those that passed the test. A fairly simple but very personal process.

Which of the subjects presented for Londonart do you prefer and why?

Obviously, it is basically impossible to answer this question: each of us three has a favourite subject and of course they are three different subjects. We quite often arrive at a wide selection of results that satisfy all three of us but that always leaves room for a more personal choice. We are three distinct personalities who for twenty years have found a design balance that is difficult to describe

Your style is sober but rich at the same time. How do you find this right balance for every project?

I do not think there is a precise recipe; I believe it is the result of our three personalities. Each of us brings to the design process very specific characteristics that, thanks to an unusual chemistry, give life to an aesthetic and functional result that is ‘sober yet rich’, as you have described it. Let’s say that the skilful thing was to find a correct balance between the three of us, which is inevitably reflected in the aesthetic content of our projects.

You have also worked for some fashion labels.

How do you manage to translate the spirit of a brand into contemporary architecture?

Now it comes fairly natural to us. Our experience helps us a lot today. You need to be really good at listening and have a good dose of humility, trying to learn the characteristics of the brand in question and transform them into architecture without having the presumption and arrogance to make the taste of the studio prevail over that of the brand. We must put ourselves at their service, and through teamwork with the creative talents of the brand, try to interpret the characteristics in a new and interesting way and translate them into architecture and aesthetic principles that are unique and representative of the brand in question. Our ego and recognizability take a back seat: what matters is to seek an exact translation of precise and unique aesthetic principles. In reality, there is a thin line, the conceptual one, that makes our hand as designers recognizable, without giving the slightest idea of ​​similarity between each project, which remains deliberately unique and tailor-made.

Which project do you feel particularly attached to and why?

As is the case with every architect, we believe that every project is like a child to us: it is difficult to pick one in particular. Perhaps we could point to our first project as the one that marked us and our path most indelibly, and is therefore the one we are obviously most romantically attached to. It is the “Antonioli” shop in Via Pasquale Paoli in Milan, where our thoughts and ideas had free reign and space for total expression. It is a boutique store that is over 18 years old and is still very relevant.

Do you prefer the residential or the contract sector?

They are two quite different types of projects and each one has its pros and cons. As always, each of us has their preferences but I think it also changes over time and needless to say it depends on the customer.

They are different approaches both from a design and psychological point of view in the sense that the use of the end customer is very different. We experience every project as a new challenge and it does not matter in which category it can be classified in but how stimulating the creative approach is for us.

Is being an architect what you imagined it would be?

There are undoubtedly some aspects that you ignore when you are young that are instead a fundamental part of the job. However, let’s face it: being an architect is awesome, just as we imagined it would be. Of course, there are ups and downs like in any profession, but it is undoubtedly a very fascinating job. When work coincides with personal interests it almost stops being a job and becomes a passion that, even if full of responsibility, makes you live a full and stimulating life.

Why are Italians good at luxury and style?

We believe that it depends a lot on the fact that ever since we set foot in the world we are surrounded by history and beauty, and this, whether we like it or not, makes us unconsciously full of knowledge that is then easy to translate into a rather extraordinary taste. We live in a wonderful country that offers us truly unique glimpses of beauty every day and at every opportunity. Living in beauty would save the entire world; experincing it in its entirety certainly changes the points of view of everyday life. Style lessons are learned by living and experimenting. We believe that being Italian means having a good dose of tradition coming from what is all around us.

Is there a search for innovative solutions in every project?

Let’s say that more than innovative solutions we could talk about unique or alternative solutions, whether they are purely functional or aesthetic. This desire to stand out through unique and recognizable products is innate in every creative talent.

POZZILEI / MONZA

You tend to prefer pure materials characterized by powerful textures such as brass, raw iron, aged metals, raw concrete. What do they convey to you?

We have always been fascinated by the expressive power of raw materials; we like what they are able to communicate naturally without the artificial intervention of man. And we really like the contrast and the tensions that come from their juxtaposition.

Also, a natural material is already unique in itself and different from any other similar one, either by nature or by its reaction to time. This also makes the designed pieces unique – there cannot be two identical ones.

God is in the details. In your projects you pay close attention to every detail. How do you do it?

Even in this case there is no particular recipe other than the desire to control the design result in an absolute manner and this entails the study and design of every detail. All the components together contribute to creating a harmonious and functional result that is recognizable and appreciated. Sometimes a project has too much designed for it and we subtract before it becomes definitive, while some other times it has too little and it lacks that detail to reach what is to our eyes perfect balance. It is not an irrefutable precise rule, but it is certainly the search for a perfect balance that reflects the expression of our design personality.

That is the actual detail.

Riuscite a creare interni di grande fascino, da cosa partite nel processo creativo, qual è la scintilla dalla quale prendono avvio i lavori?

Generalmente ognuno di noi compie una ricerca personale attingendo dai propri riferimenti che spaziano dall’arte al cinema dalla letteratura alla vita quotidiana. Diciamo che abbiamo tre approcci metodologici simili ma con basi ispirazionali molto diversificate. Questo ci permette di contamaniarci a vicenda trovando punti ed ispirazioni comuni.

Come traducete le sperimentazioni in progetti pratici che siano parte di una visione a lungo termine per il vostro studio?

Con l’esperienza maturata in questi anni di pratica siamo riusciti a trovare un metodo progettuale che ci permette, insieme con il cliente, di trasformare i suoi desideri e le nostre visioni/sperimentazioni in spazi architettonici che siano al tempo stesso funzionali e “poetici”.

Cerchiamo altresì di dare ai nostri progetti una condizione di atemporalità che non li faccia invecchiare esaurendo il contenuto estetico ma a differenza li faccia maturare tramite l’ossidazione di materiali primari e naturali. La semplicità compositiva in tensione all’utilizzo di questi materiale crea appunto uno spazio sempre diverso e mutevole nel tempo restando fedele al progetto originale.

Come vi dividete compiti e competenze?

Non abbiamo una vera e propria divisione per competenze; durante la prima fase creativa cerchiamo di lavorare tutti insieme e poi la naturale evoluzione del progetto e gli impegni di ognuno fanno si che lungo il percorso progettuale uno di noi assuma la guida del Team.

E’ un processo abbastanza naturale ed inconscio.

Cosa hanno di nuovo le vostre carte pensate per Londonart?

Direi che questo domanda dovrebbe spettare a Londonart. Crediamo che la nostra chiave di lettura della carta da parati sia più architettonica e meno decorativa per quanto possibile con le carte che sono a tutti gli effetti un decoro. Certo noi ci siamo immaginati che attraverso l’applicazione delle nostre carte non si aggiunga decoro ma architettura, che si crei una nuova lettura dello spazio dove vengono applicate.

Sono Wallpaper “materici”, in quale ambiente li avete immaginati?

In realtà ed in tutta onestà non abbiamo pensato a degli spazi specifici; l’esercizio che abbiamo fatto è stato quello di immaginarcele per un nostro uso personale o per un nostro progetto. Ognuno di noi le ha immaginate nei propri spazi; quelle che hanno passato la prova le abbiamo proposte. Un processo abbastanza semplice ma molto molto personale

Quale dei soggetti presentati per Londonart preferite e perché?

Ovviamente è praticamente impossibile rispondere a questa domanda: ognuno di noi tre ha un soggetto preferito ed ovviamente sono tre soggetti diversi. Ci capita piuttosto spesso di arrivare ad una selezione ampia di risultati che soddisfano tutti e tre ma che lasca sempre spazio poi ad una scelta più personale. Siamo tre personalità distinte che da vent’anni hanno trovato un equilibrio progettuale difficile da descrivere.

Il vostro stile è sobrio ma al contempo ricco, come fate a trovare questo giusto equilibrio in ogni progetto?

Non credo esista una ricetta precisa; credo sia il risultato delle nostre tre personalità; ognuno di noi apporta al processo progettuale delle caratteristiche ben precise che per una alchimia insolita da vita ad un risultato estetico e funzionale “sobrio e ricco” come lo avete definito. Diciamo che la bravura è stata quella di trovare un corretto bilanciamento tra noi tre che inevitabilmente si riflette nel contenuto estetico dei nostri progetti.

Avete lavorato anche per alcune griffe di moda, come si riesce a tradurre in architettura contemporanea lo spirito di un brand?

Adesso ci viene abbastanza naturale Diciamo che l’esperienza oggi ci aiuta molto. Tendenzialmente bisogna avere una grande capacità di ascolto ed una buona dose di umiltà cercando di appendere le caratteristiche del Brand in questione e di trasformare in architettura senza avere la presunzione e prepotenza di far prevalere il “gusto” dello studio su quello del Brand. Bisogna mettersi al servizio, e con un lavoro di squadra con i creativi del Brand cercare di interpretare in modo interessante e nuovo le caratteristiche e tradurle in architettura e codici che possano essere unici e rappresentativi del Brand in questione. Il nostro ego e la nostra riconoscibilità passano in secondo luogo, quello che conta è cercare un’esatta traduzione di codici estetici precisi ed unici. In realtà, c’è una sottile linea, quella concettuale, che rende riconoscibile la nostra mano come progettisti, senza dare minimante un’idea di somiglianza tra ogni progetto che resta volutamente unico e tailormade.

Il progetto al quale siete particolarmente legati?

BALLY / SHOWROOM

Come ogni architetto crediamo che ogni progetto sia come un figlio: difficile sceglierne uno; forse potremmo indicare il nostro primo progetto come quello che ha segnato noi ed il nostro percorso, in maniera più indelebile e pertanto è quello a cui ovviamente siamo sentimentalmente più legati. È il negozio “Antonioli” in via Pasquale Paoli a Milano, dove i nostri pensieri e le nostre idee hanno avuto campo libero e spazio di espressività totale. È una boutique che ha più di 18 anni ed è ancora attualissima.

Amate più il residenziale o il contract?

Sono due tipologie di progetto abbastanza diverse e che hanno ognuna pro e contro; come sempre ognuno di noi ha le sue preferenze ma credo che vada un pò anche a periodi ed ovviamente inutile dirlo a rapporto con il cliente. Sono approcci diversi sia progettualmente sia psicologicamente nel senso che l’utilizzo del cliente finale è molto diverso. Di fatto ogni progetto lo viviamo come una nuova sfida e non importa in quale tipologia si possa classificare ma quanto l’approccio creativo sia per noi stimolante.

Fare l’architetto è come lo immaginavate?

Ci sono senza dubbio degli aspetti che da giovane si ignorano e che invece sono una parte fondamentale del lavoro. Comunque diciamolo pure: fare l’architetto è bellissimo, proprio come ci immaginavamo. Certo ci sono alti e bassi come in ogni professione, ma senza dubbio è un mestiere molto affascinante. Quando il lavoro coincide con gli interessi personali diventa quasi un non lavoro ma piuttosto una passione che, anche se carica di responsabilità ti fa vivere una vita piena e stimolante.

Perché gli italiani sono bravi nel lusso e stile?

Crediamo che molto dipenda dal fatto che sin da quando mettiamo piede nel mondo siamo circondati da storia e bellezza e questo che ci piaccia o meno ci rende pregni inconsciamente di sapere che poi è facile tradurre in un gusto un pò fuori dal comune. Viviamo in un paese meraviglioso che ci offre ogni giorno ed in ogni occasione scorci di bellezza davvero unici. Vivere nella bellezza salverebbe il mondo intero, respirarla nella totalità certamente cambia i punti di vista del vivere quotidiano. Le lezioni di stile si imparano vivendo e sperimentando, crediamo che essere italiani significhi avere una buona dose di tradizione derivata da ciò che ci circonda.

In ogni progetto c’è sempre la ricerca di soluzioni innovative?

Diciamo che più di soluzioni innovative potremmo parlare di soluzioni uniche o alternative; siano esse puramente funzionali od anche estetiche; è un pò innato in ogni “creativo” questa volontà di distinguersi attraverso proposte uniche e riconoscibili.

Prediligete i materiali puri, caratterizzati da texture potenti come l’ottone, il ferro crudo, i metalli invecchiati, il cemento grezzo, cosa vi trasmettono?

Da sempre siamo affascinati dalla forza espressiva dei materiali grezzi; ci piace quello che riescono a comunicare in maniera naturale senza l’artificioso intervento dell’uomo. E ci piace molto il contrasto e le tensioni che si creano nella giustapposizione di essi. Inoltre un materiale natura è già di per sé unico e differente da ogni altro suo simile, vuoi per natura o vuoi per la reazione al tempo. Ciò rende possibile anche l’unicità del pezzo progettato, non ne può esistere uno uguale.

Dio è nei dettagli. Nei vostri progetti fate molta attenzione ad ogni particolare, come si fa?

Anche in questo caso non c’è una ricetta particolare se non la volontà di controllare il risultato progettuale in maniera assoluta e questo comporta lo studio ma il disegno di ogni particolare e dettaglio; l’insieme di tutto concorre a creare un risultato armonioso e funzionale, nonché riconoscibile ed apprezzato. A volte un progetto lo si disegna troppo e prima che per noi sia definitivo si arriva anche a sottrarre, in altre occasioni troppo poco e manca quel dettaglio per arrivare a ciò che ai nostro occhi appare come equilibrio perfetto. Di fatto non è una regola precisa inconfutabile, ma è certamente la ricerca di un perfetto equilibrio che rispecchia l’espressione della nostra personalità progettuale. Questo è il vero dettaglio.

Classic blue suits all women and all complexions, because it is neither too bright nor too dull – simply ‘classic’. But what we are talking about in particular is electric blue, a colour full of energy and perfect for giving a touch of colour to the cold season.

Inviting, isn’t it? In the autumnwinter 21/22 collections there are many variations of this colour that you can rely on to revive the wardrobe with discretion and refinement. Not to mention that this nuance invites reflection and fosters concentration – something that should not be underestimated in this uncertain historical moment. Intense, radiant, and absolutely feminine – we can choose it for a total look with character like the collections suggest, but also to create very interesting contrasts. In other words, electric blue is one of the fashion colours that cannot be missing in the wardrobe: a dress, a coat, a sweater of this colour will instantly make you fashionable, but of course you need to know how to best match it. While classic blue goes well with almost every colour, as soon as it turns a brighter shade it becomes difficult to match properly. The best combination to be sure not to take any risks is with classic black: a linear little black dress with an electric blue cardigan will immediately have a dash of vitality, and will be jauntier but still refined. If instead you feel more daring, colour blocking is the alternative for you; so go wild and combine the electric blue garment with bright and vibrant colours that contrast with each other. L’abbinamento migliore per esser proprio certe di non correre rischi è con il classico nero, infatti un lineare tubino black con un cardigan blu elettrico avrà subito un pizzico di vitalità, e sarà più sbarazzino ma comunque raffinato. Se invece prevale la voglia di osare, l’alternativa color block fa al caso vostro; e quindi sbizzarritevi ad abbinare il capo blu elettrico a colori vivaci e accesi che contrastino tra di loro.

Uno dei colori di stagione, nella moda come nel trucco, è certamente il blu. What excites you about a project?

The search for and definition of the concept I want to pursue.Trusting my initial intuition and orienting the ideas that best express my vision are two fundamental steps in developing my creative process.

I was told: ‘From your interiors one can feel the energy of those who would inhabit them shine through; every detail is carefully studied and the combinations are emotionally engaging.’

What is your mantra?

Your eclectic taste leads you to work in various different sectors: interiors, showrooms, advertising campaigns, photo shoots, and fashion. Do you like to change scenery often and experience new challenges?

‘Always be yourself, Bruno. Follow your intuitions and express what you have inside.’ Ours is a job that is constantly exposed to the judgment and taste of others and it is difficult, at times, to ignore it.

Absolutely yes: being able to move across different fields in my work has made me a multifaceted and versatile professional. All of this lets me keep my creativity alive every day, giving me the necessary determination to tackle each project with renewed enthusiasm.

How much of you is in the spaces you design?

Each creation takes shape following my aesthetic taste and my creative vision, obviously while finding the right compromise with the client’s requests. In my professional career I have noticed that the greatest satisfaction comes when you manage to finalize an idea that was initially very distant from my mental image, but that then magically takes shape.

What are the most bizarre requests you have received?

The ones that most stimulated my creativity, like the presence of a trained peacock on a photo set or the request to recreate a starry sky in a private home.

Can you tell us about your collaboration with Londonart?

I had long been wanting to realize some ideas that, for lack of time, had remained stored away. The lockdown period helped me and pushed me to create a personal project that at other times of the year I would not have been able to carry on. I am very happy that Londonart appreciated my works so much that they included them in their collections.

Was it stimulating to dress a white wall?

A white wall is like a sheet of paper, a canvas where we can write and create everything that stimulates us freely, with an open mind. This experience made me positively relive my past, when, as a young architecture student, I dedicated myself to the representation of three-dimensional architecture on canvas. In those years I was very fascinated by metaphysics and the works of the great artist Giorgio De Chirico. The subjects presented to Londonart best express my various passions: botany, theatre, and rigorous geometry. I am passionate about everything that expresses an ideal of beauty, synthesis of the harmony of colours and shapes.

What is the recognition that has gratified you the most?

Following the publication of an editorial of mine made on a photographic set,

I am currently working on the renovation of an apartment in the centre of Milan and I am following both the definition of the spaces by coordinating the construction company and the interior design of the environments. It is interesting to see how the client’s requests combine with my ideas in sometimes unusual ways, with the aim of creating something beautiful, functional, and above all, dreamy.

What would you like to design?

I would like to be able to offer my contribution to the development of a new hotel structure. I would like to create thematic rooms, harmoniously mixing different styles and aesthetic codes in order to realize an elegant, coherent, and, why not, bizarre project.

What else would you have done if you hadn’t chosen this career?

Hmm… difficult question... maybe I would have embarked on a path at the academy [of fine arts] and dedicated myself to the visual arts. After finishing high school, I thought for a moment about studying foreign languages and literature, but then my creative push took over.

What are your strengths?

Perseverance and determination.

They have accompanied me since my first arrival in Milan, 15 years ago, when I decided to leave Calabria to undertake, with great enthusiasm, a new chapter of my personal and professional life.

And a weakness of yours?

I am a very sensitive person and I often let myself be overwhelmed by strong emotions.

A destination?

Not one in particular: I am fascinated and intrigued by all cultures different from mine. If I had to choose a destination, I would say New York. I love the cosmopolitan and eclectic spirit of the big cities, but I also like to get lost in the horizon of the sea, in the shades of the sky, in that wild land shaped by the sun and where my origins reside: my south.

Cosa ti entusiasma in un progetto?

Quali sono le richieste più bizzarre che hai ricevuto?

La ricerca e la definizione del concept che voglio perseguire. Fidarsi dell’intuito iniziale e orientare le idee che esprimono al meglio la mia visione rappresentano due step fondamentali per sviluppare il mio processo creativo.

Sono quelle che hanno maggiormente stimolato la mia creatività, come ad esempio la presenza di un pavone ammaestrato su un set fotografico e la richiesta di ricreare un cielo stellato in un’abitazione privata.

Il tuo gusto eclettico ti porta a lavorare in diversi settori, interni, showroom, campagne pubblicitarie, servizi fotografici e moda. Ti piace cambiare spesso scenario e vivere nuove sfide?

Ci parli della tua collaborazione con Londonart?

Assolutamente si, il poter spaziare nel mio lavoro in diversi ambiti mi ha reso un professionista poliedrico e traversale. Tutto ciò mi permette di tenere viva quotidianamente la mia creatività, dandomi la grinta necessaria ad affrontare ogni progetto con rinnovato entusiasmo.

Era tanto tempo che avevo voglia di concretizzare delle idee che, per mancanza di tempo, erano rimaste in sordina. Il periodo del lockdown mi ha aiutato e stimolato a creare un progetto personale che in altri momenti dell’anno non sarei riuscito a portare avanti.

Sono molto soddisfatto che Londonart abbia apprezzato le mie proposte tanto da includerle nelle loro collezioni.

Quanto c’è di te negli spazi che progetti?

È stato stimolante vestire una parete bianca?

Ogni realizzazione prende forma seguendo il mio gusto estetico e la mia visione creativa, ovviamente trovando un giusto compromesso con quelle che sono le richieste della committenza. Nel mio percorso professionale ho notato che le soddisfazioni più grandi arrivano quando riesci a finalizzare un’idea, inizialmente molto distante dal mio immaginario, ma che poi magicamente prende forma.

Una parete bianca è come un foglio di carta, una tela su cui poter scrivere e creare tutto ciò che ci stimola in maniera spensierata e libera. Questa esperienza mi ha fatto rivivere positivamente il mio passato, quando, da giovane studente di architettura, mi dedicavo alla rappresentazione su tela di architetture tridimensionali. In quegli anni ero molto affascinato dalla metafisica e dalle opere del grande artista Giorgio De Chirico. I soggetti presentati a Londonart, raccolgono ed esprimono al meglio le mie diverse passioni: la botanica, il teatro e le geometrie rigorose. Sono appassionato a tutto ciò che esprime un’ideale di bellezza, sintesi dell’armonia dei colori e delle forme.

Il riconoscimento che ti ha gratificato di più?

A seguito della pubblicazione di un mio editoriale realizzato su un set fotografico, mi è stato detto: “Dalle scenografie dei tuoi interni traspare la carica e l’energia di chi potrebbe viverli; ogni dettaglio è studiato con attenzione e gli accostamenti risultano emotivamente coinvolgenti”.

Domanda difficile... forse avrei intrapreso un percorso all’accademia e mi sarei dedicato alle arti visive. Al termine degli studi liceali ho pensato per un momento di studiare lingue e letterature straniere, ma poi il mio essere creativo ha preso il sopravvento.

Il tuo mantra?

Quali sono i tuoi punti di forza?

“Sii sempre te stesso Bruno, Segui le tue intuizioni ed esprimi ciò che hai dentro”. Il nostro è un lavoro esposto continuamente al giudizio ed al gusto degli altri ed è difficile, a volte, non tenerne conto.

Costanza e determinazione.

Mi hanno accompagnato fin dal primo arrivo a Milano, 15 anni fa, quando ho deciso di lasciare la Calabria per intraprendere, con grande entusiasmo, un nuovo capitolo della mia vita personale e professionale.

A cosa stai lavorando in questo momento?

Attualmente mi sto occupando della ristrutturazione di un appartamento in centro a Milano e sto seguendo sia la definizione degli spazi coordinando l’impresa esecutrice sia l’interior design degli ambienti. È interessante osservare come le richieste della committenza, si combinano con le mie idee in maniera a volte insolita, con l’obiettivo di realizzare qualcosa di bello, funzionale e soprattutto sognante Cosa vorresti progettare?

Vorrei poter offrire il mio contributo allo sviluppo di una nuova struttura alberghiera. Mi piacerebbe realizzare delle camere tematiche, mixando armoniosamente stili e codici estetici differenti al fine di concretizzare un progetto elegante, coerente e perché no, bizzarro.

Sono una persona di grande sensibilità e spesso mi lascio travolgere dalle forti emozioni.

Una destinazione?

Non una in particolare, sono affascinato e incuriosito da tutte le culture diverse dalla mia. Se dovessi scegliere una destinazione, direi New York, adoro lo spirito cosmopolitica ed eclettico delle grandi città, ma mi piace anche perdermi nell’orizzonte del mare, nelle sfumature del cielo, in quella terra selvaggia plasmata dal sole e dove risiedono le mie origini: il mio sud.

THE RETURN OF THE TIE

‘A WELL-TIED TIE IS THE FIRST SERIOUS STEP IN LIFE’ SAID OSCAR WILDE. PERHAPS HE WAS EXAGGERATING, BUT OVER 600 MILLION MEN EVERY DAY WEAR THE ACCESSORY THAT MORE THAN ANY OTHER SYMBOLIZES MASCULINE ELEGANCE. ALTHOUGH THE FIRM GRIP OF FORMALITY HAS LONG SINCE RELAXED, THE TIE CONTINUES TO SHOW ITS APPEAL. AT TIMES IT SEEMED TO BE DEAD, BUT IT WAS ONLY PASSED OUT AND NOW IT IS EXPERIENCING A NEW GOLDEN ERA, EVEN IN WOMEN’S CLOTHING.

Un bel nodo di cravatta è il primo passo serio nella vita, diceva Oscar Wilde.

Forse esagerava, ma oltre 600 milioni di uomini, ogni giorno, indossano l’accessorio che simboleggia, più di qualsiasi altro, l’eleganza maschile. Anche se le maglie della formalità si sono allargate da tempo, la cravatta continua a piacere.

In alcuni periodi sembrava morta, ma era solo svenuta e adesso sta vivendo un nuovo momento d’oro, anche nell’abbigliamento femminile.

This year, the most popular luxury brands have included the tie in their collections, even in the spring-summer ones. From the American Virgil Abloh for his Off-White line to Heidi Slimane for Céline, from Alessandro Michele for Gucci to Kris Van Assche for Berluti, from Alessandro Sartori for Zegna to Kim Jones for Dior Homme. Sportswear in the city has been banned, along with the skinny clothes that launched slim ties. Fake casual is still holding, but only if it is the result of study, experience, perfect nonchalance combined with an innate flair for fabrics. Men have rediscovered the traditional look, with the jacket that hangs comfortably and the wide tie. We are not talking about the wide ties of the 70s. Today, the right width must not exceed 9 centimetres, while for the length it is recommended that it reach the belt. This is where the front blade rests, the wide part of the tie. The thinner back one must be shorter, but not too much. Balance is key in men’s fashion. A classic jacket can only be matched with a classic tie, because the blade and the lapels must have the same diameter.

With the return of the wide tie, models, colours, and materials that had their period of fame have disappeared. One above all: the knitted tie. On the other hand, the dad patterns we thought lost have made a comeback: regimental, paisley, polka dot.

Even if the tie is a trend rediscovered mainly by men’s fashion, we see it show up more and more in women’s fashion shows. Traditionally it is a garment that is associated with the male world, but when worn by women, it becomes a fascinating element to say the least. Comme un garçon?

Almost. Women certainly do not want to mimic nor mock men; if they wear a tie it is only because they have been able to capture the ironic charge and desecrating power of this traditionally ‘mannish’ accessory – making it their own.

Lo sportswear in città è stato bandito, come l’abbigliamento skinny che aveva lanciato le cravatte slim. Tiene ancora il finto casual, ma solo se è frutto di studio, esperienza, perfetta nonchalance unita ad un fiuto innato per i tessuti. Gli uomini hanno riscoperto il look tradizionale, con la giacca che cade comoda e la cravatta larga.

Non parliamo dei cravattoni anni Settanta.

La larghezza giusta, oggi, non deve superare i 9 centimentri, mentre la lunghezza è consigliabile che arrivi alla cintura. È qui che appoggia la pala anteriore, la parte larga della cravatta. Quella posteriore, sottile, deve essere più corta, ma non troppo. I bilanciamenti sono fondamentali nella moda maschile. Ad una giacca classica si abbina soltanto una cravatta classica, perché pala e risvolti devono avere lo stesso diametro. Con il ritorno della cravatta larga sono spariti modelli, colori e materiali che avevano avuto fortuna qualche tempo fa.

Una su tutte: la cravatta di maglia. Sono riapparse, invece, le fantasie da papà che pensavamo perdute: la cravatta regimental, paisley, a pois. Anche se la cravatta è una tendenza riscoperta soprattutto dalla moda maschile, la vediamo apparire sempre di più anche nelle sfilate moda donna. Tradizionalmente è un indumento generalmente legato al mondo maschile ma se indossata dalla donna, diventa un elemento a dir poco affascinante.Comme un garçon? Quasi. Le donne non vogliono certo imitare o scimmiottare l’uomo, se indossano la cravatta è solo perché, di questo accessorio così tradizionalmente mannish, hanno saputo captare la carica ironica e il potere dissacrante. Facendolo profondamente proprio.

Why MILO MI-lano – LO-ndon, the two cities where we respectively live. Both represent us and represent our style: on one side the cleanliness of Italian design, the attention to detail, on the other side the eclecticism and the drive to dare in the combination of colours, materials, and patterns.

Being able to merge the souls of these two cities is one of our strengths: the new design trends always come from Milan, while from London you can anticipate social and cultural movements. As for the interiors, London has always been very eclectic, with great openness to unusual combinations of colours and materials; Milan, on the other hand, is the emblem of elegance and cleanliness of the architectural lines.

The combination of these two aspects is the style that most characterizes us, an eclectic sophistication.

Your projects involve interior design, architecture, image, and exhibits.

What has changed this year without events and trade shows?

The entire exhibit and trade show sector is for obvious reasons on standby, but we have met the demand for art direction, set design, and digital exhibit projects, while also dedicating ourselves to residential and private projects, which we have always been passionate about.

Your works are recognizable and have a strong personality. How are they evolving over the years?

Our graphic style is the DNA of all our projects, but it evolves over time, reflecting the journey of the Studio, the evolution of tastes and trends as well as past and present but always with an eye toward the future. For example, we really like experimenting with new materials and combining them in unusual ways.

The choice of materials is fundamental for us and is probably one of the distinctive traits of our work. We spend a lot of time in research, we try to propose innovative materials, or traditional ones but in unusual combinations.

Space, colour, concept - where do you usually start from to design a project?

Each project is unique; we do not follow a rigid scheme; such an approach would take away strength from the project and would risk homogenizing and flattening the final result. Each project is a new challenge; there is always an initial note; sometimes the symphony that comes after it is dictated by the space, other times by an architectural detail, a colour, an existing material, or the setting itself. From there we start and develop a concept that revolves around the initial idea.

What would you like to design?

We do have a dream ... we would love to design a boutique hotel where we can combine the experience gained in the design of exhibitions and the more architectural one of showrooms, galleries, villas, and private settings.

What are your inspirations in the world of art or architecture?

Which project do you feel particularly attached to and why?

Fusion has always characterized us. Our studio itself is the result of a continuous fusion or exchange between Milan and London. As a result, our inspirations belong to all cultural fields: from theatre to cinema, from fashion to design, from art to architecture; we draw inspiration from artists and architects who are always different and brilliant, who allow us to better interpret the universe of our clients.

We are attached to all our projects, large and small, all of which contain a journey, surprises, and challenges.

Then there is always the human side in every project: from getting to know a new client to the relationship we establish with the various suppliers involved. Each project is unique – it enriches us and remains within us.

What is luxury design? What materials make the furnishings precious? What are the new luxuries; where are we going?

The greatest satisfaction?

When the client is happy to have chosen us.

Milan has always been considered the undisputed capital of design.

Is it still the case?

Luxury design used to be associated exclusively with the choice of precious materials such as marble, wood, and precious metals, now, especially after being tested by the pandemic, great luxury is open space, the light and the greenery that a setting can offer. Lately our residential clients have asked us to rethink existing floor plans in order to maximize space and light and make the environments fluid – the concept of fluidity characterizes our projects more and more both in interior design and in communication.

Although at the moment it appears to be a little subdued, no one can take away from it its undisputed experience in the field of design and innovation. It remains in our opinion the beating and driving heart of international design. The whole design ‘system’ is ready and is just waiting for the opportunity to come back and express itself with the same passion and liveliness that has always characterized it.

What is new about your wallpapers designed for Londonart?

What does it mean to be an architect and a designer today?

They are fluid and soft designs, light and highly versatile; they adapt to different settings without cannibalizing the space. We wanted to draw inspiration from the world of textiles and fashion to offer a feeling of positivity and hospitality. It is our duty to absorb the current situation by offering a product that reflects not only a style and our studio but also the request for comfort that comes from long periods of seclusion – a warm hug.

In part what it has always meant, which is knowing how to interpret, anticipate, and express the spirit of the time we live in through your own sensitivity and creativity. However, the pace and methods are different today, since architects and designers are required to meet the constant urge for innovation in a constantly evolving market. In our opinion, the new challenges today concern digitization and sustainability.

They are decorative and material wallpapers. What context do they suit best?

Does each of you have different tasks or do you work together on every detail?

The character of each space is not dictated by a single element, but by the harmony generated by all the elements involved: the colours, the finishes, the volumes, the light, and, why not, by a wallpaper that can embellish like a painting, serve as a textured background or complement the existing furniture.

They are versatile wallpapers that add texture and safety to what is already there, giving character to the space.

After many years of collaboration, we have a clear idea of our respective strengths; we share the study strategy and the concepts of each project but then we work individually. For us, given the physical distance that separates us, working from home has always been the standard.

Perché MILO MI-lano – LO-ndon le due città dove ripettivamnte viviamo. Entrambe ci rappresentano e rappresentano il nostro stile , da un lato la pulizia del design italiano, la cura per i dettagli, dall’altro l’eclettismo e la spinta ad osare nell’accostamento di colori, materiali e fantasie. Sicuramente riuscire a fondere le anime di queste due città è uno dei nostri punti di forza; da Milano arrivano sempre le nuove tendenze del design, mentre da Londra si riescono a leggere in anticipo i movimenti sociali e culturali. Per quanto riguarda gli interni, Londra è sempre stata molto eclettica, con grande apertura verso abbinamenti di colori e materiali insoliti; Milano invece è l’emblema dell’eleganza e della pulizia delle linee architettoniche. L’accostamento di questi due aspetti è lo stile che più ci caratterizza, un’eclettica sofisticazione.

Vi occupate di interior design, architettura, immagine e allestimenti cosa è cambiato in quest’anno senza eventi e fiere?

Tutto il settore allestimenti e fiere è per ovvie ragioni in stand-by, abbiamo però da un lato accolto la richiesta di progetti di art-direction, set design e allestimenti digital, dall’altro ci siamo dedicate a progetti residenziali e privati che da sempre ci appassionano.

I vostri lavori sono riconoscibili ed hanno una forte personalità, come stanno evolvendo nel tempo?

Il nostro segno grafico è il DNA di tutti i nostri progetti ma evolve nel tempo, riflette infatti il percorso che lo Studio sta facendo, l’evoluzione di gusti e tendende nonché passato e presente ma sempre con un occhio verso il futuro.

Per esempio ci piace molto sperimentare nuovi materiali e accostarli tra loro in modi inconsueti. La scelta dei materiali è per noi fondamentale e probabilmente è uno dei segni distintivi del nostro lavoro. Spendiamo molto tempo nella ricerca, cerchiamo di proporre materiali innovativi, oppure tradizionali ma con accostamenti inusuali.

Spazio, colore, concetto, da dove iniziate di solito a concepire un progetto?

Ogni progetto è unico, non seguiamo una griglia rigida, tale approccio toglierebbe forza al progetto e rischierebbe di uniformare e appiattire il risultato finale. Ogni progetto è una sfida nuova, c’è sempre una nota iniziale, a volte a dettare la sinfonia che ne segue è lo spazio, altre volte un dettagglio architettonico, un colore, un materiale esitstente o il contesto stesso... da lì partiamo e sviluppiamo un concept che gira appunto attorno all’idea iniziale.

Cosa vorreste progettare?

Abbiamo un sogno nel cassetto... ci piacebbere molto progettare un boutique hotel dove appunto coniugare l’espereienza maturata nel progettazione di allestimenti e quella più architettonica di show-room, gallerie, ville e contesti privati.

Quali sono i vostri riferimenti nel mondo dell’arte o dell’architettura?

Il progetto al quale siete particolarmente legati e perché?

La contaminazione ci caratterizza da sempre.

Di fatto il nostro stesso studio è frutto di una contaminazione continua tra Milano e Londra.

Cosa si intende per luxury design?

Quali materiali rendono preziosi gli arredi?

Quali sono i nuovi lussi, dove stiamo andando?

Quando il cliente e’ felice di averci scelto.

Una volta il luxury design veniva associato esclusivamente alla scelta di materiali preziosi come marmi, essenze e metalli pregiati ... ora, sopratutto dopo essere stati provati dalla pandemia, il grande lusso e’ lo spazio aperto, la luce e il verde che un contesto puo’offrire. Ultimamente i nostri clienti residentials ci hanno appunto chiesto di ripensare planimentrie esistenti in modo da massimizzare spazio e luce e rendere gli ambienti fluidi.. il concetto di fluido caratterizza sempre di più i nostri progetti sia nell’ambito dell’interior che nella comunicazione.

Cosa hanno di nuovo le vostre carte pensate per Londonart?

Sono disegni fluidi e morbidi, leggeri e altamente versatili, si adattano infatti a contesti diversi senza cannibalizzare lo spazio.. abbiamo voluto isprarci al mondo del tessile e del fashion per offrire una sensazione di positività e di accoglienza. E’ nostro compito assorbire la situazione attuale offrendo un prodotto che rispecchi non solo uno stile ed il nostro studio ma anche la richiesta di confort che deriva da lunghi periodi di clausura... un caldo abbraccio.

Sono wallpaper decorativi e materici, in quale contesto possono adattarsi meglio?

Il carattere di ogni spazio non viene dettato dal singolo elemento, ma dall’armonia generata da tutti gli elementi in gioco, le cromie, le finiture, i volumi, la luce e, perché no, anche da una carta da parati che puo’ impreziosire come un quadro, servire come sfondo materico o complementare l’arredamento esistente.

Sono carte versatili che aggiungono texture e sicurezza all’esistente conferendo carattere allo spazio.

La gratificazione più grande?

Milano è sempre stata considerata il polo indiscusso del design, è ancora così?

Anche se in questo momento appare un po’ sottotono , nessuno le puo’ togliere l’indiscussa esperienza nel campo del design e dell’innovazione, rimane a nostro avvisso il cuore pulsante e trainante del design internazionale. Tutto il “sistema “ design e’ pronto e attende solo la possibilita’ di tornare ad esprimersi con la stessa passione e vivacita’ di prima.

Cosa significa fare l’architetto e il designer oggi?

In parte quello che da sempre ha significato, cioè saper interpretare, anticipare ed esprimere lo spirito del tempo in cui viviamo attraverso la propria sensibilità e creatività.

Le modalità e le tempistiche sono però diverse poiche’ oggi all’archietto e al designer viene richiesto di rispondere alla costante urgenza di innovazone di un mercato sempre in evuluzione. La nuove sfide, a nostro parere, oggi riguardano la digitalizzazione e la sostenibilta’.

Vi dividete le competenze o lavorate insieme su ogni dettaglio?

Dopo tanti anni di collaborazione sono chiari i punti di forza di ognuna, condividiamo la strategia di studio e i concept di ogni progetto ma poi operiamo individualmente. Per noi, vista la distanza fisica che ci separa, lo smart working è da sempre la nostra modalità lavorativa.

#FOOD Who says that there are only preserves made with summer products that are then consumed in the colder months?Even Autumn often gives us fragrant fruits that we cannot consume all at once, perhaps because we do not have a large family, and even when we gift them to relatives and friends, there is always some left over. You just need to have a little patience, but it is absolutely worth it: think of those evenings when you do not feel like cooking – you could enjoy some excellent bruschette with vegetables in oil or vinegar accompanied by a glass of wine. To get a good result, you need to know which ingredients to use, paying attention to seasonality and the place of origin as well as favouring products grown without chemicals.

Another fundamental aspect concerns ripeness: the fruit must not be too ripe or unripe, it must be firm to the touch. Finally, to ensure long-lasting preservation, you need to respect the cooking times, choose the right containers, store correctly, sterilize and label each pack.

Chi lo dice che esistono solo le conserve realizzate con prodotti estivi che poi si consumano nei mesi più freddi? Anche l’autunno spesso e volentieri regala frutti profumati che non si riescono a consumare tutti in una volta, magari perché non si è in tanti in famiglia e, anche quando si regalano a parenti e amici, rimane sempre qualcosa che avanza. Bisogna solo avere un po’ di pazienza, ma ne vale assolutamente la pena: pensate a quelle serate in cui non avete voglia di cucinare, potrete gustare delle ottime bruschette con le verdure sott’olio o sott’aceto da accompagnare ad un calice

di vino. Per ottenere un buon risultato, bisogna sapere quali ingredienti utilizzare, facendo attenzione alla stagionalità ed al luogo di provenienza oltre a prediligere prodotti coltivati senza sostanze chimiche.

Un altro aspetto fondamentale riguarda la maturazione: la frutta non deve essere né troppo matura né acerba, al tatto deve risultare soda. Infine, per garantire una conservazione duratura bisogna rispettare i tempi di cottura, scegliere i giusti contenitori, invasare correttamente, sterilizzare ed etichettare ogni confezione.

MARRONS IN SYRUP

QUINCE CHEESE

Marrons in liqueur syrup are a true delight when it comes to preserves, or rather one of the many possible delights, because they are a much more versatile fruit than is often thought.

They are not only roasted, boiled, and glazed, but also preserved in jam, in syrup, in alcohol, not to mention that chestnut flour has been for centuries one of the main sources of nutrition for a large part of the population. The recipe for marrons in syrup is therefore ideal with marrons, but it is also really good with good quality chestnuts. It is also excellent if you replace grappa with cognac or a good rum, at the cost of leaving behind Italian traditions.

Chestnuts in syrup with grappa are used in many valleys of all Alpine regions but are a particular specialty of Piedmont, where chestnuts are traditionally also put in syrup with wine, preferably Barolo.

Quince trees are increasingly rare and yet they are among the most beautiful trees in autumn, together with pomegranate plants. If you are lucky enough to own some quince – in the apple or pear variety, which are actually the same fruit, only slightly different in shape – or have neighbours who own them, you will not even need to look for the raw material in the market, where it tends to be scarce.Some Italians probably remember the quince cheese sold in blocks closed in tin or wooden boxes, or in hard moulds almost like fondant candies. Today quince cheese is almost impossible to find, so, to offer it with the cheese plate or as a vintage dessert, you just have to prepare it yourself at home. vvvvThe basic ingredients are: apples, sugar, water, and lemon. Depending on the type of quince cheese you want to prepare, you can add mustard oil, candied citron or orange, cinnamon, dextrose, and citric acid powder to preserve the most beautiful moulds.

I marroni sciroppati al liquore sono una vera delizia in fatto di conserve o meglio, una delle numerose delizie possibili, perché sono un frutto molto più versatile di quanto spesso si pensi. Non vengono solo arrostite, lesse e glassate, ma anche conservate in confettura, sciroppate, sotto spirito... senza contare che la farina di castagne è stata per secoli una delle principali fonti di alimentazione di gran parte della popolazione. La ricetta dei marroni sciroppati è dunque ideale con i marroni, ma va benissimo anche con le castagne di buona qualità. È ottima anche sostituendo la grappa con il cognac oppure con un buon rum, uscendo però dalle tradizioni italiane. Le castagne sciroppate con la grappa si usano in numerose valli di tutte le regioni alpine ma sono particolarmente tipiche del Piemonte, dove le castagne vengono tradizionalmente sciroppate anche con vino, preferibilmente Barolo.

Gli alberi di mele cotogne sono sempre più rari eppure sono tra i più belli dell’autunno, assieme alle piante di melograno. Se hai la fortuna di possedere qualche cotogno – nella varietà mela o pera, che sono in realtà lo stesso frutto lievemente diverso per forma – o di poter attingere a quello di persone che abitano vicino a te, non avrai nemmeno bisogno di cercare la materia prima al mercato, dove tende a scarseggiare. Qualcuno probabilmente si ricorderà la cotognata venduta a panetti chiusi in scatole di latta o di legno, oppure in formine dure quasi come caramelle fondenti.

Oggi la cotognata è quasi introvabile quindi, per offrirla con il piatto dei formaggi o come dessert vintage, non resta che prepararla in casa. Gli ingredienti fondamentali sono: mele, zucchero, acqua e limone. A seconda del tipo di cotognata che vorrai preparare, potrai aggiungere olio di senape, canditi di cedro o arancia, cannella, destrosio e acido citrico in polvere per conservare le formine più belle.

Autumn is that time of the year when pumpkins abound in the market, but how can you enjoy this autumn flavour even when its season ends?

Pumpkin jam is the answer. A simple and excellent preserve to prepare in autumn, when you can choose the best pumpkins of the season. It is one of the most versatile recipes you can prepare: excellent on bread for breakfast or as a snack, but also ideal for preparing cakes, muffins, tarts. But if you have a savoury tooth, you cannot go wrong if you accompany it with salumi, ricotta, and aged cheeses. Pumpkin jam has a delicate flavour that can be flavoured with vanilla, cinnamon, amaretto, and nutmeg to make it even tastier.

They call it the winter flower. It is beautiful to look at and even tastier to eat. It is not bitter, on the contrary, when cooked it takes on a sweet aftertaste that is out of this world.

There are two types of Treviso red radicchio: tardivo and precoce (late and early). The most valuable is the tardivo IGP because it requires long manual processing. The production area is located between the provinces of Treviso, Padua, and Venice.

This radicchio is obtained with a particular technique called ‘imbianchimento’ (whitening). After the harvest, it is tied in bunches, placed in tanks with running water where it is left for about twenty days until the plant inside produces new white leaves. There are many uses for this wonder of nature: in addition to the classic risotto, lasagne, and salads, it is grilled or preserved in oil.

Beets, also called red turnips due to their colour and similar appearance to that of the tubers of Brassica rapa L. (botanical name), are rich in beneficial properties for the whole body and it would be a real shame not to be able to eat them when they are out of season, and only those preserved with unhealthy substances and additives can be found on the market. To prepare pickled beets to be consumed on their own, as a side dish, or in salads, we recommend using small and firm roots of the same size, so that they can cook evenly. The choice of the most suitable vinegar is also important: the best option is high quality white wine vinegar with an acidity percentage of at least 6% (you can find the degree of acidity on the label) to be able to dilute with water, because those with lower acidity, such as apple cider vinegar, must be used pure in the preparation of pickles, and they make their flavour particularly strong.

It is a type of condiment typical of Indian cuisine and widespread throughout South Asia, which the British imported from India. It is a spicy and sweet-andsour preparation. It usually contains vegetables or fruits cooked for a long time with sugar and vinegar. It is used as a sweet-and-sour accompanying sauce for dishes with a delicate flavour. The most famous chutney is mango chutney, but there are many variations, including an onion one.

The most commonly used spices in the preparation of chutneys are black pepper, ginger, turmeric, garam masala, mustard seeds, and coriander.

It can accompany main courses such as roast pork, but it is also very good with fried or boiled vegetables, lentils and chickpeas, fresh or aged cheeses, rice, boiled or steamed meat, fish.

L’autunno è quel momento dell’anno in cui al mercato abbondano le zucche, ma come è possibile gustare questo sapore autunnale anche quando finisce la sua stagione? La marmellata di zucca è la risposta. Una conserva semplice e ottima da preparare in autunno, quando è possibile scegliere le migliori zucche della stagione. È una delle ricette più versatili che potete preparare: ottima sul pane per la colazione o la merenda, ma ideale anche per preparare torte, muffin, crostate. Ma se preferite il salato, non potete sbagliare accompagnandola a salumi, ricotta e formaggi stagionati. La marmellata di zucca ha un sapore delicato che può essere aromatizzato con vaniglia, cannella, amaretto e noce moscata per renderla ancora più gustosa.

Lo chiamano il fiore d’inverno. E’ bellissimo da vedere e ancora più buono da mangiare. Non è amaro, anzi, da cotto assume un retrogusto dolce che è la fine del mondo. Il radicchio rosso di Treviso si divide in due tipologie: il tardivo e il precoce. Il più pregiato è il tardivo IGP perché richiede lunghe lavorazioni manuali. L’area di produzione è posta tra le Province di Treviso, Padova e Venezia. Questo radicchio viene ottenuto con una tecnica particolare chiamata “sbiancamento”. Dopo la raccolta, viene legato a mazzi, posto in vasche con acqua corrente dove viene lasciato circa una ventina di giorni finché la pianta all’interno produce delle nuove foglie bianche. L’utilizzo di questa meraviglia della natura è molteplice: oltre al classico risotto, lasagne e in insalata, viene fatto alla griglia oppure conservato sottolio.

Le barbabietole, chiamate anche rape rosse per il loro colore e per l’aspetto simile a quello dei tuberi della Brassica rapa L.(nome botanico), sono ricche di principi benefici per l’intero organismo e sarebbe un vero peccato non poterle mangiare quando sono fuori stagione ed è possibile reperire sul mercato solo quelle conservate con sostanze e additivi poco sani. Per preparare le barbabietole sottaceto da consumare da sole come contorno o da impiegare nelle insalate è consigliabile usare radici piccole e sode della stessa dimensione, in modo che possano cuocere uniformemente.

Anche la scelta dell’aceto più adeguato è importante: l’opzione migliore è l’aceto di vino bianco di alta qualità con una percentuale di acidità di almeno il 6% (il grado di acidità è riportato sull’etichetta) per poter diluire con l’acqua, perché quelli di acidità inferiore, come l’aceto di mele, devono essere usati puri nella preparazione dei sottaceti e ne rendono particolarmente forte il sapore.

Il termine inglese chutney indica un tipo di condimento tipico della cucina indiana e diffuso in tutta l’Asia meridionale, che gli inglesi importarono dall’India. È una preparazione speziata ed agrodolce. Solitamente contiene verdure o frutta cotte a lungo con zucchero e aceto. Viene utilizzata come salsa di accompagnamento agrodolce per pietanze dal gusto delicato. Il chutney più famoso è quello di mango ma ne esistono tantissime varianti, tra cui la quello con la cipolla. Le spezie più usate nella preparazione dei chutney sono pepe nero, zenzero, curcuma, garam masala, semi di senape e coriandolo. Si possono accompagnare ad un piatto principale per esempio carne di maiale arrosto, ma sono molto buoni anche con verdure fritte o lessate, lenticchie e ceci, formaggi freschi o stagionati, riso, carni bollite o cotte a vapore, pesce.

When you begin designing, where do you start from?

The first thing to is ask yourself the right question. One of the core aspects of my job is to fully understand the value of the object in question, its significance and role in our lives before creating the first drafts and sketches. Once you identify the “essence” of a date or a potential type of product, then the creative work can get underway.

The final look of the product can be viewed as a consequence.

You have previously worked for international brands such as Alessi, Moooi, MDF Italia, FIAM, Falper and Mingardo to name but a few, so how did you approach this decorative challenge for Londonart?

It was something new and stimulating. To be honest, it was a challenge I really enjoyed. Even though I’d worked in the Netherlands for 3 years at the Wanders studio and I’d already taken on projects that called for surface decoration, I hadn’t yet formulated an idea of what my personal vision for this area could be. For this project, I wanted to corroborate both my designer side, tied to three-dimensional volumes, and the brand’s decorative spirit, with the aim of finding an engaging common ground.

What inspired your wallpapers in the 2021 collection?

For Zephir Town and Second Life, the idea was to “make a hole” in the wall creating an imaginary landscape beyond it, giving the wallpaper a strong sense of spatial depth. I created dreamlike environments using architecture and creativity, so that they could conjure up an imaginary escape.

What kind of setting did you envisage placing these decorations in?

All are fairly atypical wallpapers given the style of the decoration, which, if viewed in its entirety, from left to right, takes on truly colossal dimensions. The idea is to have a wallpaper that could work both in settings with smaller walls and in larger compositions, leaving the choice of the ideal crop to the end customer. In the first case, the result is a geometric patchwork of textured, simple, composed backgrounds.

The bigger the wall space available, the more the sense of depth can be perceived.

You think that a product’s aesthetic appeal should be a consequence of the profound understanding of its essence, of the context and shouldn’t only be about personal taste. Is that right?

Exactly. I imagine the aesthetic look of one of my projects as the result of a study of emotions that it may or may not evoke within a certain context. This all frames, supports and reinforces the expression of personal taste that cannot, however, be avoided.

We know that until July 30th you were the main artist of a personal Pianca & Partners in “Di/Segno” exhibition format, dedicated to design, creativity and the discovery of the creative process. Can you tell us about the Orme project?

During the launch of 2 new products designed for Pianca, (the Domenica bed and Kyoto containers), I was given the opportunity to use the Pianca&Partners showroom as an exhibition space to showcase my last 5 years as an independent designer. With the support of the architect and curator, Massimo De Conti, we created ORME, an exhibition of 10 limited run prints of some of my mixed media illustrations, accompanied by texts and objects. On the one hand, the illustrations represent some of the projects I have developed over the last few years and on the other, they set the goal of pushing beyond the purely project-related aspect, proposing a more subjective and emotional interpretation.

And as we are really very curious, we’d like to know a little more about your life as a rapper.

Ha ha, well okay! I’m still a designer, not a rapper... But I admit to having a passion for freestyle jams in shopping centre car parks, with car doors wide open and old school beats blasting.

Vintage stuff!

So, is there a common thread that pulls together design, art and music?

The common thread is the concept of shape tied to emotion. As Enzo Mari used to say, “don’t just think about the shape of design, of architecture... think about the shape of music, of poetry...”

What does it mean being a designer nowadays?

Being a designer nowadays means being able to take on multiple projects that complement design, at the same time. I don’t think it’s the same as it was in the past any more. I often remind my students that being a designer nowadays requires a lot of work spanning different fields and how talent only accounts for 1% of the whole.

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on several new projects about which I unfortunately can’t say much. There will be a new light and a chair soon, made for a company from a Northern European country, two ample collections of outdoor furniture, living room coffee tables, and something else I’m sure I will have forgotten.

My latest news also includes my first project in collaboration with my brother Alberto, which we’re currently working on. It’ll be a surprise.

Simone Bonanni was born in Pordenone (Italy), August 1989 and he graduated with Honours at IED Milano in 2011. In 2012, he left Milan and joined the Marcel Wanders team (Amsterdam, NL) where he worked as product designer and project leader for 3 years. Quando inizi a progettare da dove parti?

La prima cosa è farsi la domanda corretta.Uno degli aspetti fondamentali del mio lavoro è comprendere a pieno il valore dell’oggetto in questione, il suo significato e il suo ruolo nella nostra vita, prima di provare i primi bozzetti e schizzi. Una volta identificata l’ ”essenza” di una data o potenziale tipologia di prodotto, inizia il lavoro creativo a pieno regime. L’aspetto finale del prodotto può essere visto come una conseguenza.

Hai lavorato per marchi internazionali come Alessi, Moooi, MDF Italia, FIAM, Falper, Mingardo per citarne alcuni, come hai affrontato questa nuova sfida decorativa per Londonart?

E’ stato qualcosa di nuovo e stimolante. A dir il vero, una sfida che mi ha divertito molto.

Benchè avessi lavorato per 3 anni in Olanda presso lo studio Wanders e avessi già affrontato progetti che prevedevano un decoro della superficie, non avevo ancora mai formulato un’idea su quale potesse essere la mia personale visione sul tema. Per questo progetto ho voluto pertanto avvalorare sia la mia indole progettuale più legata a volumi tridimensionali, sia l’anima decorartiva del brand, mirando a trovare un avvincente minimo comune denominatore.

A cosa ti sei ispirato nei tuoi wallpaper per la collezione 2021?

Per Zephir Town e Second Life, l’idea è stata quella di “bucare” il muro creando un panorama immaginario al di là della parete, dando alla carta un forte senso di profondità spaziale. Ho creato degli ambienti onirici tra l’architettura e la fantasia che potessero rappresentare una via di fuga immaginaria.

In quale ambiente hai immaginato di inserire questi decori?

Sono rivestimenti abbastanza atipici vista la natura del decoro che se preso nella sua interezza, da destra a sinistra, raggiunge dimensioni davvero mastodontiche. L’idea è quella di avere una carta che potesse funzionare sia in ambienti con pareti di dimensioni più ridotte, sia in grandi composizioni, lasciando al cliente finale la scelta del crop ideale. Nel primo caso il risultato è un pachwork geometrico di campiture materiche, essenziale e composto.

Più la parete a disposzione si estende, più si percepisce un forte senso di profondità.

Ritieni che l’estetica di un prodotto debba essere la conseguenza di una profonda comprensione dell’essenza, del contesto e non deve riguardare solamente un gusto personale. Giusto?

Esattamente, mi immagino l’estetica di un mio progetto come il risultato di un’indagine sulle emozioni che questo può o dovrebbe provocare in un dato contesto. Tutto ciò inquadra, supporta e da forza all’espressione del gusto personale che rimane ad ogni modo un fattore imprescindibile.

Sappiamo che fino al 30 luglio sei stato protagonista di una personale da Pianca & Partners nel format espositivo “Di/Segno”, dedicato al design, alla creatività e alla scoperta del processo creativo. Puoi parlarci del progetto Orme?

In occasione del lancio di 2 nuovi prodotti disegnati per Pianca, (il letto Domenica e i contenitori Kyoto) mi è stata offerta la possibilità di usufruire dello showroom Pianca&Partners come spazio espositivo per parlare dei miei ultimi 5 anni da designer indipendente. Supportato dall’architetto e curatore Massimo De Conti, abbiamo immaginato ORME, un esposizione di 10 stampe a tiratura limitata di mie illustrazioni a tecnica mista accompagnate da testi ed oggetti.

Da un lato, le illustrazioni rappresentano alcuni dei progetti sviluppati negli ultimi anni, dall’altro si pongono l’obiettivo di andare oltre l’aspetto meramente progettuale proponendo una chiave di lettura più soggettiva ed emozionale.

E visto che siamo veramente molto curiosi, vorremo anche sapere qualcosa in più sulla tua vita da rapper.

Ahaha, va beh! Faccio ancora il designer, non il rapper.. ma ammetto di avere una passione per le jam di freestyle nei parcheggi dei centri commerciali, portiere dell’auto aperte e beat oldschool a tutto volume. Roba di altri tempi!

Quindi tra design, arte, musica, esiste un filo conduttore?

Il filo conduttore è il concetto di forma legato all’emozione. Come diceva Enzo Mari, “non pensate solo alla forma del design, dell’architettura.. pensate alla forma della musica, della poesia..”

Cosa significa fare il designer oggi?

Ma non ti fermi mai?

Fare il designer oggi significa riuscire ad occuparsi simultaneamente di moltissime attività complementari alla progettazione, penso non sia più come una volta. Ricordo spesso ai miei studenti di come essere designer ad oggi richieda molto, moltissimo lavoro su tanti ambiti diversi e di come il talento sia solo l’1% della questione.

Qualche volta si Una domanda che non ti ho fatto? E la risposta?

V: “quando ci farai le prossime carte”..

S: “iniziamo domani?”

A cosa stai lavorando attualmente?

Sto lavorando a diversi nuovi progetti dei quali purtroppo posso dire ancora poco. Ci sarà presto una nuova lampada ed una sedia con un’azienda del nord europa, due ampie collezioni di arredamento outdoor, tavolini da soggiorno e qualcosa mi sfuggirà sicuramente..

Tra le novità c’è anche il primo progetto in collaborazione con mio fratello Alberto al quale stiamo lavorando proprio ora, sarà una sorpresa.
