Eat, Exercise, Sleep, Repeat We are in the era of #fitfam! Social media may have coined the term but more people today are thinking about keeping both their bodies and minds as healthy as possible. In this issue we are tearing away from thinking solely about body image. Instead we have put together a variety of articles that focus on the health and fitness of the body as a whole. Whether you are of the doctrine of 15-30 minutes/day or 60 minutes/twice a week, exercise is important. But that is only part of the journey. Diet is even more important. What we put in our bodies affects the way we move, feel and think. It also affects our overall health. Though health and fitness may sound methodical and sometimes boring, it is a necessity we must burden ourselves with. In this issue, we have found fun and interesting ways to eat well and exercise while looking good. Enjoy your read and Happy 50th Birthday Lagos State! #LostinLagos #DiscoverLagos #ExperienceLagos Cheers! Olamide

Mind, Body and Soul

A bit about the Product of the Month:

Every month I source products from local businesses, shops and designers to tell you what’s new and hot in Lagos. These products can be anything from a tasty meal to a scoop of delicious ice cream, from a piece of furniture to a cute designer wallet. This month I picked products suitable for the entire family. If you have a product you want us to test, let us know. We will try to get our hands on it so you know if it is right for you.

Taliah Waajid

Jamaican Black Castor Oil An Elixir for the Entire Body

I adore castor oil. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the texture or the scent. Whatever the reason, I love it. The Jamaican Black Castor Oil range can be used on both body and hair effectively. Why not try it as a hot oil treatment for your hair, as a massage oil on your body or even as a cuticle oil on your nails? Oh, the versatility! www.nectarbeautyhub.com

Taliah Waajid for Children Kinky Wavy Natural Kid-Friendly Hair Care

Having a special shampoo just for kids is a great way to help them understand the importance of good hair care. The Taliah Waajid range for children includes oils, shampoos, moisturisers and detanglers. All the products are moisture-based which makes washing, combing and styling both pleasant and manageable www.nectarbeautyhub.com

Keexs

Nigerian-Made Super Cool Trainers

Keexs are my made-in-Nigeria product of the month. Keexs is a social-oriented footwear brand. That means they’re not just interested in increasing profits but also work to empower communities through social-oriented projects. I like their ethos. The trainers are also super stylish. I like the designs and colours, the majority of which are simple and classic. If you prefer a funkier sneaker, graffiti and abstract designs are also available. For their comfort and conscientiousness, I give them a thumbs up. www.keexs.com

A bit about me: I am a young, 30-something lady who loves Lagos and trying new things. From restaurants and exotic food, to experiencing new places and cities, I love new new! Having new businesses and companies pop up in Lagos on a daily basis makes Lagos exciting and a fantastic place to live, work and play.

A Lagosian’s Journey to Fitness In 2011, when my family decided to move from New Jersey to Nigeria, I didn’t know how I’d cope in an unfamiliar environment. I stopped exercising and turned to fast food for comfort. My weight ballooned. I grew so fat I began wearing the maternity clothes I had packed away in mothballs. As our plane touched down at Murtala Mohammed Airport, I took comfort in the fact that all my newly emerged chins eliminated the need for a neck pillow. I didn’t know how to be healthy in Lagos. Behind so many high walls, I couldn’t even locate the grocery store. One day, I was invited to a yoga class held at an oil company’s compound. A bunch of women gathered in a dirty squash court. The teacher kept glancing at a book called An Idiot’s Guide to Yoga. Every woman in the class extended her arms at a different angle but the instructor didn’t correct anyone. Despite my misgivings about the teacher’s qualifications, I returned month after month. The fitness options available were bleak. Many people told me that a healthy lifestyle was impossible here. There was too much traffic, too few gyms, too much wahala, and too much good food and booze. I gave up without trying and succumbed to the allure of delights I encountered for the first time.

lostinlagosmagazine

Star Beer, plantain chips, and puff puff in excess packed more pounds onto my frame.

He also suggested we walk faster and introduce strength training.

One morning my husband asked me if I wanted to take a walk.

That was three years ago. With my husband’s help, I lost over 30 kg while living in Lagos and have kept it off. Every morning we walk briskly for an hour while drinking coffee from travel mugs. We talk. We lift weights. We may sneeze during harmattan and get drenched during rainy season but we stick to our exercise routine. It’s healthy for our bodies, minds, and marriage.

“Not really,” I said, biting into a donut. “Just inside the estate,” he said. “You don’t even have to get dressed.” So we strolled for half an hour and chatted. It was pleasant to be outside. I wore my nightgown as if I were a lunatic wandering the grounds of an asylum. The next day we walked again. After a few weeks, it had become routine. I began to wear exercise clothes and a jogging bra. My weight dropped. I felt better. My head no longer resembled an enormous baked potato. But still I wasn’t where I wanted to be. I had transitioned from morbid obesity to plain old obesity. I looked nothing like the intimidatingly gorgeous mothers I saw at school pickup. I asked my husband—who has always been athletic—what I was doing wrong. He kindly suggested that my diet needed tweaking. For example, instead of two Indomie packets for lunch, I could prepare one. Instead of gobbling an entire bag of potato chips as an after dinner snack, I could eat a piece of fruit. I began to copy the way he ate. I noticed he filled up on protein and ate starch in moderation. He rarely ate sweets.

For me, the journey to fitness meant finding an activity I enjoyed and learning to prepare and consume food that nourished, not stuffed me.

Your path will be different than mine was but change is possible. Becoming healthier is within your grasp.

It’s a gift to embrace yourself as you age. Each day I see more grey hairs and fine lines on my face but I’m too content to care. I’m fit. My good looks may even intimidate you at school pickup. Perhaps you love your body as it is. I hope that’s the case. If not, consider getting out of your rut. Why not try something new? In 2017, worlds of options exist here, including the latest fitness trends. You can practice martial arts, sail, swim, fence, ride horses, run, cycle, play football, or do yoga, Pilates or a boot camp. In the past month, The Lost In Lagos Magazine staff sampled several exercise classes including spinning, burlesque and even pole dancing. There are nutritionists who can help you devise a sensible eating plan. There are blogs which teach you to cook lighter versions of your favourite Nigerian and international dishes.

bnatural MedSpa

"The root of all health is in the brain. The trunk of it is in emotion. The branches and leaves are the body. The flower of health blooms when all parts work together." Kurdish Folk Wisdom

bnatural MedSpa stands out amongst the many spas popping up around Lagos, with an extensive menu of treatments that will appeal to anyone. They offer a range of nail, makeup, eyebrow and hairdressing services. Their exquisite facials and invigorating Hammam scrubs are just a few of the ways they are able to melt away the stress that life burdens us with. Their massage options range from standard Swedish and Deep Tissue to a unique heated Lava Shell massage with a seaweed oil blend. The shells come from the South Pacific and possess properties that makes them the perfect tools for a massage. Massage therapists use the narrow edge along the mouth of the shell for targeted deep work. They use the smooth rounded surface for even pressure and comfort in long, relaxing strokes. Yet another reason why bnatural is truly unique! The first medical spa in Nigeria, bnatural MedSpa has been offering treatments to ease the mind, body and soul for over 15 years. They understand the importance of creating a serene experience at the spa and the necessity of ensuring every client leaves more relaxed than when they came.

lostinlagosmagazine

With three locations in Abuja, Ikeja and Victoria Island, bnatural not only offers spa treatments for relaxation, but as a med spa they also offer alternative medical treatments administered by U.S. board-certified medical staff using medical grade products. You often hear that to look good, you must feel good. The reverse is also true. The confidence that comes with clear skin and smooth lines can't always be achieved through diet and exercise alone. Sometimes you need some extra help. The med spa at bnatural offers aesthetic dermatological services like Botox to erase fine lines for younger looking skin; Dermal Fillers for body contouring to improve volume under the skin; and cosmetic Laser treatments for hair removal, acne and stretch marks. The AOS System Peel and the VI Peel prevent and treat photodamage, hydrate skin, lighten dark spots, and improve firmness and skin texture. Medical treatments in Lagos can be intimidating, especially when needles or lasers are involved. However, bnatural clients put their trust in the spa's highly trained staff with no fears. In addition to certification and training in a range of treatments, the bnatural spa team is united in their commitment to ensure their clients look their best.

Each procedure is performed in a sterile environment where clients can be certain both their safety and privacy will be respected. With such natural results, no one will know why you look so young and refreshed! The client is ensured a comfortable experience, both physically and mentally. Gifting tranquility and peace is a great way to share the bnatural experience. A certificate for any treatment at bnatural is the greatest gift, a gift that releases endorphins, relieves stress and encourages relaxation. When the body is at ease, the mind also benefits. There is no quicker way to achieve this tranquility than through a spa treatment at bnatural. Mind, Body and Soul

An Interview with

Layane Moukarim

Health Coach & Managing Director

Why did you start a healthy eating store in Lagos? I lived in Nigeria until age 13. I opened my first store in Beirut in 2009. It was a natural step to return to Lagos in 2016 to promote organic food and sustainable farming. What type of things can be found at A New Earth? A New Earth is a fully certified organic health food store. You can find regular food items and personal care products, as well as specialized food products, like gluten-free, vegetarian, and most importantly, superfoods. The store promotes healthy living and educates customers on choosing the right types of food. Apart from starting this amazing store, you are also a Health Coach. What does that mean? A Health Coach acts as a supportive mentor and wellness authority who works with clients to help them feel their best through food and lifestyle changes. Instead of prescribing one diet or way of exercising, we tailor individualized wellness programs to meet each client’s needs. If I am trying to eat healthy what key things should I have in my pantry and fridge? Always fill your fridge with a colourful variety of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate (minimum 70%) for the magnesium. It’s easy to diversify your diet when you have the right seasonings available. Turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cayenne pepper, garlic and onions go a long way and transform the most boring items into a powerful, nutrient-dense meal.

As consumers, what can we do to make healthier decisions? It's very important to prepare your grocery list ahead of time. Another trick is to read the label when you pick up a product; if you don't understand the ingredients, chances are it’s loaded with artificial flavorings, synthetics and colourants. Limit processed foods and spend more time in the produce aisle and in the kitchen. If you’re very busy, preparing meals ahead of time is the best way to go! Do you have any tips to making healthy, kid-friendly meals? Healthy swaps include using sweet potatoes instead of white for french fries. You can limit the amount of white flours and breads. Instead of giving kids store-bought bars, why not bake your own cookies or muffins? Try experimenting with other types of flours, like coconut, buckwheat, almond or even quinoa. Use honey or coconut nectar instead of white sugar. Limit their consumption of milk. You'd be surprised to know that cow milk is NOT the best source of calcium, but rather green, leafy vegetables that you can you can serve stir fry or serve with a tahini-based dressing. Are there any myths you think we should know about when it comes to diet? The most important principle is that no one diet fits all, and bio-individuality is the key. Your body knows what is best for you! You just have to listen. The best way to do that is to keep a food journal so you can pinpoint problematic foods or allergies.

Eating healthy is not hard; ditch processed white flours and sugars. Go for vegetables and knows fruits, and lots of good fats like coconut or avocados. Avoid chips and pick nuts, seeds or homemade popcorn. Enjoy lean protein stir-fries with vegetables, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, a bit of cayenne, some tamari or coconut aminos for the extra flavor, and a bit of lemon. There is the idea that organic food is more expensive, does that idea stand in Nigeria or is it just a concern for other countries or is it just a myth? I often tell my customers, don't ask yourself why healthy food is expensive, ask yourself why junk food is so cheap. Mass industrialization and the race for profit by multinationals have created a situation where our primary source of foods have become more expensive than all the processed, nutrient-empty, sugar-loaded meals that all around us. Temptation is everywhere. We are constantly served foods that are fried in deeply processed and GMO oils, loaded with sugars to compensate for the taste, boosted with growth hormones and antibiotics, and enhanced with flavourings and colourants to tempt us even more. No wonder our generation is seeing a rise in chronic diseases, diabetes and heart-related problems.

I emphasize choosing the most natural, whole foods. Why not have some cucumbers or carrots with a sweet nut butter or a savory avocado based dip? Lastly, what is more important diet or exercise? Both go hand in hand, but nutrition is key. You can work out religiously and still feel sluggish or unable to lose those extra kilos. Many people use their workout as an excuse to indulge in junk food. This is a shame. Imagine what your body can achieve with the right tools.

Layane Moukarim A NEW EARTH Organic & Eco-living store

Is healthy snacking possible and what snacks can you either make or buy that are healthy and easy to make? Snacking is not necessarily bad. Every time you feed yourself is an opportunity to heal your body.

Mind, Body and Soul

An Interview with

Kemi Saliu

Marketing Director at leading FMCG company & avid member of Cycology

What do people gain from being a part of Cycology? The personal satisfaction continuous improvement brings. If you stay consistent, you will improve. Riding in a group improves your overall bike handling and riding performance. Off the bike, you have the network and friendship of a diverse group of people, top professionals in their own right. It’s not for nothing that cycling has been labelled the new golf.

How long have you been a bike rider? I’ve been riding a bike since childhood. I started off with a BMX over 20 years ago. How long have you been cycling with Cycology? I tested Cycology out in early 2013 and became a member a few months later. At first, the thought of cycling on Lagos roads was really daunting. Up until then I had only ridden in and around my estate. On my first test ride, we cycled from Eleko to Free Trade Zone. There couldn’t have been more than 20 riders in the group. I only managed 17 km on that day. However, the other members made it easy to enjoy riding in our bustling metropolis so joining was a no-brainer.

How often do you cycle together? As a group we have our standard Saturday club ride for road bikes. In addition, we have a number of spin-off rides: the TNRs – Tuesday and Thursday night rides; the SHC – the Silly Hour Crew ride, an early morning ride, to get you set for the day; and the Fat Ground Taya ride, an off-road fat-bike ride which explores beaches and the natural beauty that exists in Lagos most people don’t see.

What is Cycology? Tell us more about what the club does. The official statement is that Cycology is a club of like-minded individuals who enjoy cycling as a way of staying fit and healthy. The truth is Cycology is an extended family with big brothers and sisters who ride harder and stronger than you but help you improve yourself. It’s gratifying to see newbies enter the sport who progress from worrying about what type of bike they should buy then seeing them bloom into big brothers and sisters in their own right! The club offers many benefits. If you ask our expatriate community, some would say Cycology has helped them integrate into Nigerian life and provided an outlet to both release stress and interact with people outside work. For locals, Cycology helps build relationships some would never have contemplated, as well as providing a way of staying active in our environment. In short, Cycology provides freedom.

lostinlagosmagazine

What’s your favourite part about the cycling community? How family-like it is. We are each our brother’s keeper and look out for one another. I am a member of a several clubs and groups in Lagos and honestly, Cycology is head and shoulders higher when it comes to taking care of its own.

Is joining a club like Cycology a good way to start a fitness journey? I think so. If you can overcome the fear of riding on Lagos roads— which is not as bad as you might think—cycling is non-weight bearing so it is one of the best forms of exercise for people who are severely overweight/obese. Riding consistently is key to coming out the other end a fitter person. How has your own cycling improved since joining Cycology? I am not consistent (laughs). Work and family do take some of my riding ‘me-time’ but I am a faster rider than the person who rode 17 km back in 2013. I seek the freedom riding offers. I juggle a lot in my work life so having a few hours to feel the wind on my face and get a workout is blissful.

What is the benefit of being part of a club like Cycology? Cycology affords you the opportunity to ride with peers of a similar skill level. It allows you to challenge yourself to improve when you are in a group setting. This is actually quite difficult on solo rides particularly for beginner riders. On a practical level, riding with the group offers a level of safety whilst out. We ensure Supply and Gear vehicles accompany each group of riders so in case of flat tyres there is always support. Or if you just are not feeling the ride that day, you are free to stop riding and put your bike on a carrier. The club also organizes external rides to spice things up a bit. Some of them have been to Ogun state, Uyo and Rwanda and South Africa, locations that offer a different levels of challenge for club members to experience together. When you aren’t training or racing what do you do to relax? I love books so I read. Unfortunately you can’t read a book and ride! Otherwise I would have combined the 2 at some point. Ah well….

Thanks Kemi. You can find out more about joining Cycology by emailing info@cycology.com.ng. Follow Cycology on Twitter and Instagram @cycologyclub

A FIT-FAM* GUIDE TO EATING OUT in Lagos

lostinlagosmagazine

lostinlagos.com

Mind, Body and Soul written by

Enoh Daisy Lyeh

*Fit-Fam can be used to describe an individual or group that lives a healthy lifestyle both by exercising and eating well. They are part of the online global fitness family #FitFam. The key to a healthy lifestyle is to be aware that the process is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise.

A problem people have, however, is knowing what to do when eating out. First, equip yourself with basic nutritional fit-fam knowledge:

Everything has calories. No matter how healthy a food item is, it contributes to your total energy bank. What you do with these consumed calories determines whether you lose, gain or maintain weight. Grains, roots/tubers, beans, fruits and vegetables are all carbohydrates. They are classified according to their starch and glycaemic content. This information is vital if you are following a low-carb routine, calculating your macros or just documenting everything you eat. Every food group converts to blood glucose, the simplest energy form your body uses. Protein and healthy fats go through this process more slowly and that is why they should be on every plate for effective fat burning. Portion control is as relevant as brushing your teeth daily. To stay the fit-fam course when eating out or at a party, try these: Drink water before a meal to limit your food intake.

Chew slowly to give your brain and stomach time to register signs of satiety and stop eating when you are satisfied, not overstuffed.

Sharing is caring. Share a starter or dessert to limit your calorie intake. Share or avoid the small chops plate at a party. They have been rumoured to collectively have at least 1000 calories!

Opt for healthy starter options like pepper soup without the bread rolls, grilled chicken wings, salad, asun or peppered snails. Avoid creamy soups or battered protein, as they have been dipped in white flour and fried in old or hydrogenated oil. Choose a main course full of vegetables and lean protein.

Salad dressings should be served on the side and not incorporated into the salad before it gets to your table. This ensures you are in knows control. Choose healthier options like vinegar or olive oil instead of supermarket brands. Opt for healthier sides, e.g., sautéed vegetables to go with grilled or barbecued protein instead of fries or rice. Fruit salads or sorbets are sweet and a healthier choice than ice creams, pastries or candies. Alcohol has a lot of hidden calories. Try water with a slice of lemon or a smoothie as drink options.

Customise your wedding menu and combine items from various meals e.g., moin-moin + vegetables/salad/chicken curry + lean protein (fish preferably as most party meats have been soaked in oil); ofada rice + vegetable/curry (ditch the oily stew) + lean protein; reduced rice or yam porridge portions + vegetables/curry + protein. Most wedding soups are extremely oily so tread with caution where swallow is concerned. Above all, when eating out, choose your indulgences wisely and try to create a balance that works for you. Do not be too hard on yourself. Eating a typical Nigerian meal in a day will not destroy your hard work or progress.

Meals that have been prepared through healthier methods like baking, grilling, sautéing, stir-frying, or steaming are your best options. Ask how dishes have been prepared if it is not indicated on the menu to ensure you are making the right choice.

If attending a wedding, eat before leaving the house. But hey, we all usually go there for the food, right? A 3-course meal is not mandatory so if you have taken a starter, you can skip dessert.

BLACK LENTIL & CHICKPEA SALAD

Serves 4 to 6 Prep time: 20 mins Cook time: 25 mins / Total time: 45 mins

Layane Moukarim is a Health Coach and the Managing Director of A NEW EARTH Organic & Eco-living store. This is a bold, brightly flavoured and filling bean salad. The radishes lend a lovely, spicy crunch while the mint, dill, and lemon add a fresh note. This salad keeps well for a few days in the fridge and packs well in a lunchbox. Lentils are a very good source of cholesterol-lowering fibre and have significant amounts of folate and magnesium. Black lentils are also high in amino acids with an amazing 24% protein content, the highest of any lentil. Chickpeas are an excellent source of fibre, containing 16% of your daily need in one half-cup serving. They are also a good source of magnesium, iron, copper, potassium, and thiamin. Chickpeas, like other legumes, contain resistant starch that slows down the digestion of carbohydrates. Consuming foods high in resistant starch may also improve colon health, including promoting healthy bowel flora. This is a high protein, high fibre, gut-friendly recipe!

LENTILS INGREDIENTS 2 cups dried black beluga lentils 2 large garlic cloves, halved lengthwise 2 tablespoons olive oil

LEMON DRESSING INGREDIENTS ¼ cup fresh lemon juice (about 2 medium lemons) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon honey or agave nectar 1 clove garlic, pressed or minced ¼ teaspoon fine-grain sea salt Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

SALAD INGREDIENTS 400g cooked chickpeas 1 big bunch of radishes, sliced thin and roughly chopped ¼ cup packed fresh, leafy herbs, chopped (combination of mint and dill recommended) Optional garnishes: sliced avocado, crumbled feta or goat cheese, handful of fresh leafy greens

.

DIRECTIONS To cook the lentils: Pick over the lentils to remove any bits of debris. Rinse the lentils under running water in a mesh colander. In a medium pot, combine the lentils, halved garlic cloves, olive oil and 4 cups water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat to a gentle simmer and cook until the lentils are cooked through and tender, which will take somewhere between 20 to 35 minutes. Drain the lentils and discard the garlic cloves. To make the dressing: Whisk together the ingredients in a small bowl. If you're using pre-steamed lentils instead of cooking your own, add an extra clove of minced garlic and an extra tablespoon of olive oil. To assemble the salad: In a large serving bowl, combine the lentils, chickpeas, chopped radishes and herbs. Drizzle in the dressing and toss to combine. Serve with avocado, crumbled cheese or fresh greens if you'd like. Make it vegan: Use agave nectar instead of the honey.

Bolanile Olatunji CEO Eat Tu Live (eattulive.com) Eat Tu Live is a plant-based brand that provides products and services to support a healthy lifestyle. Services include health and nutrition coaching, private vegan cooking classes, fresh meal delivery, chef sessions and more. Bolanile is also the founder of Vegan In Nigeria.

DIRECTIONS

In a large pot, heat oil then add diced onions, tomatoes, habanero and dash of sea salt. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the onions are soft and have mixed with the natural juice from tomatoes. Add in chickpeas (I use dry chickpeas soaked for 12 hours then cooked in a pot of water for 1 hour but you can substitute canned chickpeas for convenience), diced zucchini, masala, curry powder, cumin and oregano then mix well.

VEGAN COCONUT CURRY

serves 4-5 Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons grapeseed oil 2 small onions 4 plum tomatoes 1 habanero (atarodo) pepper Sea salt to taste 3 cups chickpeas 1 small zucchini 1 1/2 tablespoons masala 1 teaspoon curry powder 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon oregano 1 can of coconut milk (14 ounces) 2 teaspoons coconut flour (or any unrefined, unbleached whole grain flour) 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) 3 shallots 2 key limes

Add in coconut milk and coconut flour, which helps to thicken the sauce, bring to a boil then simmer for 10-15 more minutes. Taste the curry sauce and add in additional salt, cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to suit your preference.

SUGGESTION

Remove the sauce from heat then add minced shallots and squeeze in lime juice. Stir well then allow to cool before serving.

Another serving option would be to add the filling to rolled dough to make coconut curry meatless-pies.

I paired my coconut curry with boiled rye berries as a great starch-free rice substitute. You can also serve with quinoa, amaranth, acha/fonio, spelt or kamut grains for a healthy alkaline alternative.

The road to fitness can be lonely. Embarking on a healthy lifestyle is challenging for most people to begin but easy to quit. There are a number of ways to stay motivated. You can make your journey public by telling friends, sharing it on social media, or doing anything that heightens your pressure not to fall off the wagon. I think there’s an even better way to stay on track. Keep it in the family! There are so many benefits to working out and living a healthful life as a family. I know a lot of you are puzzled at the thought of exercising with your children. Let me explain. We all know the benefits of exercise. It can improve our physical and mental health and expand our social circles. It aids in the prevention of many debilitating illnesses. It’s also a smart way to get children to use their boundless energy for self-improvement. It is recommended that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week, plus muscle strengthening exercise two days per week. Children and teens need even more exercise! Kids require at least 60 minutes each day. Yet so many leave it to the schools to provide for their children’s activity needs. Do any of these excuses seem familiar? We don’t have time. We’re distracted by our lives, by stress, by traffic, by trouble-shooting at home. We’re so busy shuttling our kids from swimming to piano lessons that we can’t seem to squeeze in our own fitness.

Whatever the reason, parents and children are not taking advantage of activities that can reliably make them feel better all around. This is a call to time-strapped parents and children to get active together. By exercising as a family, you’ll have a built-in support system. When dad is tired after a long day at work, his children can remind him that fitness is a family priority. If everyone works together, the odds of being successful at reaching fitness goals are much greater. Family exercise can also give you a fun shared activity that continues as kids age into their teens. Beyond the obvious health and physical benefits, it’s a bonding experience. You’re leading by example and imprinting healthy habits that will last a lifetime. It’s also great one-on-one time. You can choose an activity that is fun and inexpensive. My father played tennis and would take me to the tennis club with him where I had lessons and made friends. It was fantastic.

There are a many types of exercise that parents can do with their children that everyone will enjoy. Here are some suggestions:

Biking

Running

Invest in some bicycles and take the family out. It’s great exercise and you see more when you’re riding than when you’re driving. You can stop and explore things that interest you along the way.

Children are hard-wired to run even if it’s around the house. They have lots of energy and it has to come out. So if you enjoy running, it’s easy to sweep your child into your exercise program.

Before taking a child out on the road, make sure he/she can handle the bike, including stopping and starting reliably. It’s also important for your child to have good impulse control. Low traffic and residential areas are recommended.

Walking Simple, low cost and so effective. After big meals, take a walk together afterwards, even if it’s just to the end of the road. Schedule particular evenings for a family walk.

Runnersworld.com suggests using progress charts to keep everyone motivated. Kids can keep track of miles logged and improvements to timing over the course of the month. To make it fun for kids, get creative. Parents can turn running into a scavenger hunt with a map and toys hidden along the route.

Yoga Family classes are more playful than a regular yoga classes. They incorporate games and poses you can do with a partner. The key is to find a class that everyone enjoys, one that is engaging for the kids, but challenging for the adults.

Fitness is ageless and should be enjoyed by the entire family. There are many more activities like Zumba/dance classes, basketball or rock climbing that you can all do together. It creates dialogue, keeps everyone looking and feeling healthy, connects mind and body and, most importantly, strengthens the bonds of family.

MINT

by Eat Green Company

I’m not going to lie. I didn’t get off to a great start eating clean last month but then again, that happens to me every month! For the health and fitness issue, I was determined to get it right.

The problem is, everywhere you go there is so much temptation to make unhealthy choices. I thought the best solution would be to find somewhere with a wide variety of healthy options. After considering suggestions from anyone who would listen to me at the office, I settled on Mint by Eat Green Company. Even the name was encouraging. I felt healthier already. Surprise, surprise, I ran late for my lunch date with the girls and grew irritated by the traffic getting through the Victoria Island tollgate to Lekki. I didn’t know what to expect from the restaurant but as I pulled up to it, I was instantly put at ease by the big, black signboard reading ‘Mint’. The sign was clean and simple. I entered and found the decor of the restaurant similar in style. To my right, an organic grass-textured wall caught my attention and to my left, the girls eyeballing me to rush in an order. They had already placed orders for a Couscous Salad and a Bun-less Burger that intrigued me before I even sat down. As I studied the menu, I realised it’s not the sort you can speed through. I attempted to speed through it, nonetheless. It was well organised with a lot to choose from, e.g., sandwiches, salads, pasta/noodles, Nigerian dishes, and even house specials. I knew I would need some assistance. We signalled to the waiters to come over. Although very pleasant and friendly, the waitstaff possessed varying levels of knowledge of the menu and ingredients but tried gamely to answer our questions. We were informed about the versatility of the menu and how the food can be adapted to one’s preferences. We were also told about healthy substitutes like the Wheat Small Chops Platter and healthier methods of preparing some meals like the Oil-less Seafood Okro. A billion questions and two waiters later, I opted for the Salmon Sandwich with Sweet Potato Fries.

lostinlagosmagazine

I know they weren’t the healthiest option for me but then again, baby steps! Plus the waiter had reassured me that “the salmon is a very healthy fish” so I was pleased. It took a while but when our drinks arrived, everyone seemed happy with their order. I got a ‘Skinny Me’ because it had ingredients like mint, cayenne pepper, ginger syrup and apple cider vinegar and I was familiar with some of their health benefits. The first sip was cool and refreshing but whoa, did it pack a punch. Although I needed to gulp from my friend’s water to soften the impact of the cayenne pepper and ginger at the back of my throat, I couldn’t put the drink down. I just had to sip it slowly. I would recommend a bit less ginger next time. Shortly afterwards, our food came out. While it was well plated, we all had very different experiences. My salmon sandwich was not what I had expected. I expected a sandwich of grilled fish but received a club sandwich with a salmon and mayonnaise filling. It was tasty but I wondered how healthy it could be with the mayo. The fish was supposedly grilled then flaked and then mixed in with the mayo but the consistency was more like tuna from a can. I could have personally done with thicker chunks of the salmon. The sweet potato fries were addictive! They were hot, crispy, symmetrically cut and well seasoned. There was a dollop of coleslaw in the centre of the plate which I would normally ignore as garnish but I thought I’d give it a go and it was nice and fresh and crunchy. We did the usual ‘let’s try from each others plate thing’ and made our comments. I think I was the happiest with my order. As it was a lunch break and we were all in a hurry, we had a quick chat, finished off our drinks—I took mine to go—paid for our meals and rushed off to the next engagement. The bills were brought out individually which made paying very quick and easy. I am going back to Mint! There are a few more healthy options on the menu that I would like to try. I’m interested to see how they’ll turn out. Plot 5A, 33 Grace Anjous Road, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos t: +234 814 068 5197

Six Ways Exercise Can

Boost Mental Well-being "Strength of mind is exercise, not rest." Alexander Pope

I had been feeling physically and mentally exhausted. I would wake up, head to work, get home, pass out then repeat. It felt like being stuck on a hamster wheel with no way out. Like so many people my age, I was bitten by the ‘busy bug’. I was too busy to lead a healthy life, too busy to eat right and too busy to exercise. As you can guess, my body paid for it!

The normal ‘New Year New Me’ mind-set appeared around December. By February I was out of breath just climbing up the stairs! It wasn’t only my body that was suffering; it was also my mind. Although I was mentally frazzled and not operating at full capacity, I soldiered on. It wasn’t until a bout of depression struck that I realised my body had been crying out for some self-love. I couldn’t scale the mountain of a full lifestyle overhaul since I was now running on empty. Instead I’d take on just one change at a time and stagger the rest.

lostinlagosmagazine

How many of us can relate? We tend to ignore the cues our bodies send us and often wait until we get to a breaking point before responding. Even if you aren’t dealing with a mental illness, you can still reap the benefits of regular exercise. The truth is it only takes small changes to your lifestyle to make a big impact on your mental well-being.

lostinlagos.com

1. Reduce Stress

Exercise increases the concentration of norepinephrine, a chemical with the ability to improve the brain’s response to stress. Squash players have highlighted the ability to manage stress by taking negative emotions out on the court as they slam the ball hard against the wall. The sense of release derived by letting go of negative energy via physical energy is applicable to a variety of exercises.

4. Mental Well-being

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present in a non-judgmental way. Mindfulness-based exercises such as Yoga and Tai Chi combine the focus of mental and spiritual aspects integrated into movement. Studies have shown that this meditative form of exercise has the ability to enhance your mood and overall sense of well-being.

2. Improve Self-Confidence Studies show that regular exercisers can improve self-esteem and confidence solely by taking part. This means that an increased level of self-esteem can be derived from competitive sports even if the partaker does not secure a win. Self-worth has the ability to impact mental well-being, while negative self-esteem has long been associated with mental illness.

3. Alleviate Anxiety

A reduction in cortisol levels (stress hormones) and an increase in endorphins have been documented to improve mood. Exercise has been prescribed by doctors in the treatment of mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. The fight or flight response common to anxiety sufferers becomes more regulated through increased exertion and therefore flares up less frequently resulting in less attacks.

5. Tap into Creativity

Mindful walking has the ability to bring thought patterns into the present, making the individual more aware of their surroundings. Present thinking also breaks the habit of coming to the same conclusions as it allows for new information to be consumed and processed, which can lead to the formation of new ideas and the experience of being ‘unstuck’.

6. Help Control Addiction

Dopamine is the chemical response to pleasure, triggered by exercise, sexual arousal, food, alcohol and drugs. Studies have shown that for those with addiction to drugs and alcohol even a short bout of exercise can deprioritize the bodies craving.

Oyindamola Fakeye is a creative producer, entrepreneur and mental health advocate. In 2014 she established Sound Mind Africa in order to provide emotional and mental health advocacy and promotion. The organisation focuses on holistic and mindfulness-based health practices.

Health Tips from Euracare

There are health checks we should be doing regularly, whether yearly, monthly, on our own or at a hospital. However, due to lack of knowledge or the limitations of local medical facilities, we don’t do them. These are some health checks we should make part of our routines. They could help with early detection and even save a life.

OBESITY

Obesity is increasing in prevalence in Nigeria—at 64% of the adult population—with its deleterious effects on long term health of hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnoea and cancer now becoming commonplace. Public health advice has continued to be centered on a healthy diet consisting mainly of fruit and vegetables and at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise on a daily basis. However, despite widespread availability of these messages, patients with morbid obesity often find it difficult to lose weight using these conservative measures. Bariatric surgery which may consist of a gastric balloon, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery is now available as an adjunct to help individuals with morbid obesity achieve significant weight loss and reduce the morbidity associated with obesity. Euracare remains the only facility in Nigeria where this type of aid to achieving significant weight loss is available. Look Good Whilst Working Out

I love to exercise for numerous reasons, first and foremost for how it makes me feel and second, for the positive effects exercise has on my health and body. When I work out, I’m always ready to smash any session because of how I feel, which is generated by a combination of what I’m wearing and the anticipation of doing something I enjoy. It’s much easier to be motivated to exercise when your gym wear makes you feel like you are on top of the world. When exercising, it’s important to be comfortable but that doesn’t mean you can’t look good. If you want to add oomph to the endorphin rush you get during exercise, here are some brands that offer awesome workout gear, right here in Lagos. RUYI is a luxury activewear brand that ‘elevates the modern wardrobe’ for women. Their activewear pieces not only make you look and feel good whilst working out, they are also stylish enough to wear during the day, giving you a sexy sport-luxe look. Try their white marble leggings and crop top set or their deep plunge pleated top with black mesh leggings. You can pick up a RUYI set from WISH at 62 Norman Williams Street, off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos or online at www.ruyilifestyle.com.

FitNigeria is a health and fitness brand that specialises in personal training. They have just launched their own collection of cool and comfy unisex tee-shirts, called CiTees. These are designed to be worn both in and out of the gym. The best thing about these tee-shirts is they each come with a city of Nigeria written on them—hence the name CiTees—so people can rep their hometowns. In addition, a portion of each sale goes to charity. Get one online at www.fitnigeria360.com/shop.

TigerLily is an affordable sportswear brand that makes gym wear for men and women. Possibly the first true sportswear brand in Nigeria, TigerLily offers items such as sleeveless hoodies and tops for men and women, high-waisted control gym leggings for women that help control your abs whilst working out, as well as general gym wear for both sexes. Visit their store at 7 Hilary Street, off Ogbunike Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos or stop by MeiDei or Sshhh Boutique where they are also available.

Joagh Athletics is another sportswear brand that makes gym wear for both sexes. If you are working with a tight budget or don’t want to spend too much money on sportswear, maybe this is the brand for you. They may not be as stylish as the other brands, but their prices are very accessible. Find them online at www.joagh.com.

Not Your Regular Spa Treatment

lostinlagosmagazine

lostinlagos.com

Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t just stop at exercise and diet. There are multiple ways to ensure your body is the best it can be both inside and out. Spas offer a variety of unusual and cutting edge treatments beyond the standard facials and massages. To ensure you get the body you desire, Lost in Lagos did some research on procedures ranging from colonics to fat freezing that can be done right here in Lagos. Fat Freezing

Cupping Therapy Massage

This is a non-invasive way to get rid of stubborn fat. This procedure targets fat cells underneath the skin and cools them till they crystallize (freeze) and die. Over time your body naturally processes the dead fat cells, flushing them out, and you are left with a more sculpted body. Clinical research has proven that this process, Cryolipolysis, can reduce the thickness of fat layers by %25 within two to four months. Head to E-Fitness, Vi to try it out.

This massage harnesses ancient Chinese medicine by using suction cups over the skin’s surface to create negative pressure. Essential oils and active natural substances are used with the cups to reach deep into soft tissue, attachments and organs. The massage effectively drains the tissues of fat and water and stimulates metabolism. Overall this massage is good for lymph drainage, releasing deep tissue issues, relieving inflammation and stimulating blood flow. Head to Mart-Life Detox Clinic & Anti-Aging Spa in Maryland to try it out.

Colon Hydrotherapy

Also known as colonic irrigation, colon hydrotherapy is a safe method of flushing out your colon with water. Despite the initial discomfort, this form of therapy cleanses your system leading to a multitude of benefits. By removing large amounts of toxic waste by the time the session is complete, you will feel lighter with more energy and great looking skin. The therapy aims to boost the immune system, make the digestive system more effective, help with IBS and bloating and even kick-start weight loss. It’s a natural body detoxifier and has been said to improve fertility. Head to BNatural MedSpa, Priscilla’s Pride, French Riviera Health & Beauty Spa, Venivici Health Club + Urban Spa or other spas in Lagos that offer Colon Hydrotherapy

V-Treatment / Dukhan Treatment Ear Candling

Ear Candling is an ancient, non-invasive therapy used to remove excess wax and impurities from ears. This is done using a long hollow candle that creates a vacuum effect in the ear, drawing out any wax, candida, yeast and other debris that may be lodged. Usually the session ends with a massage around the ear, face, neck and shoulders to enhance the effects of the candling, leaving you feeling relaxed and lighter when completed. This therapy is said to reduce stress, improve concentration and help with sinus issues. You can give this a try at Oasis Med Spa in Ikoyi.

Sometimes called Vagina Smoking, Dukhan or Ratu Treatments are an age old tradition originating from Java.To date, Indonesian women hold this treatment as a ritual and practice it regularly to ensure their southern regions are kept healthy. There are a variety of versions that use specific oils, herbs and spices which are determined on the outcome you desire. Overall, the procedure is simple. While you are perched on a chair without a seat, herbs and spices with exotic fragrances are burnt beneath you. A massage and soothing bath follows. The treatment is a way to cleanse, relax, and even scent a vagina. This might not be for everyone but if you are up for it, try it at Tirta Ayu Spa or The Henna Place in Lekki Phase 1.

Ask the Expert

There is so much information on dieting, exercise, and health, it is hard to sieve through it and know what is good for you. We asked a few experts to share their insights with us. We Asked: If you are busy, how can you still stay fit and healthy? Do you have any tips for exercising on the move?

EXPERT:

Ngozi Ojora is a Certified Personal Trainer with specialisations in both Corrective Exercise and Fitness Nutrition. She is also a Certified PiYo Instructor which she teaches at Yoga Sutra, Victoria Island and a couple of venues in Ikoyi.

lostinlagosmagazine

She said: Most of us have the odd 15-30 minutes/day to engage in some activity. The good news is the time can be split into 2-3 sessions. If you haven’t got access to a gym, don’t stop there. Use your room as your gym and your body as weights. Rather than sitting down to converse on the phone, stand up and walk around. And always ensure you are well hydrated, preferably with water. Eating small quantities regularly is important. If you haven’t the time for a sit-down-meal, then grab a bite and eat on the move. Walking around Lagos, you can buy roasted plantain, a handful of nuts, bananas, and oranges. This might not be a meal per se, but it can tide you over. You don’t want to be ravenous by the time you eat because apart from messing with your metabolism and adversely affecting your blood sugar levels, it can negatively impact hormonal levels.

We Asked: How important is rest and relaxation to maintaining a healthy mind and body?

EXPERT:

Chocolako, is a certified yoga teacher, writer, and founder of Yoga Innergy, a well-being and lifestyle brand We Asked: Yoga is good for strengthening and relaxation but what should I say to someone who won't practice yoga because of their religion? Is yoga a religious practice that excludes other religions? She said: Given its recent popularity, there are myths and half-truths about yoga and this is one of them. Yoga is not a religion or a replacement for religious beliefs. People who practice yoga have beliefs ranging from agnostic to Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and many others. The practice of yoga is accepting of all religions and simply promotes uniting what is often considered separate: the mind, body and soul. Before passing judgment, I hope you experience a yoga class for yourself.

She said: It is very important. The body naturally repairs itself during rest and relaxation periods. Consider how you feel when you experience fatigue, cold or flu symptoms. The first thing a physician prescribes is rest and relaxation. There are signals exchanged during mind-body connection. When we are aware of these signals we can respond to our body’s needs properly.

EXPERT:

Akin and Trisha Maja are a husband and wife team and Co-Creators of the Safari® program, a unique African inspired fitness program. Trisha’s certifications include Zumba, Booiaka, Insanity, PiYo amongst others. Akin holds a degree in physics, an MBA, and a Fellowship at the Institute of Registered Exercise Professionals.

EXPERT:

is the Founder of the Society for Performing Arts of Nigeria (SPAN) We Asked: Dance is fun but is it really an effective workout? She said: Dance made me lose 30 kilos after each of my pregnancies. I am a walking witness to the impact of dance on health and fitness. Dance is challenging and it is never boring. It is unique in all aspects of cardio and toning and it always leaves me feeling good! Sacred dancing in particular requires extra energy. It always leaves me with a renewed sense of courage, as I hope to break through boundaries and exceed my abilities with my body.

We Asked: If traveling how can you ensure you stay in shape throughout your trip? They said: Before you depart, be sure to set your goals. If you’re going to Europe or USA, chances are you will let your diet slip a little. However, if you’re going to a hot and humid destination, you may have better luck sticking to a healthy diet.

Book the right hotel. A hotel with a gym or swimming pool helps make training on holiday or a business trip a breeze. You don't need anything particularly fancy. Consider the time of day best to exercise and keep workouts short. Every day, inset about 15 to 30 minutes of exercise into your routine. Never underestimate the value of a brisk walk or steady cycle for keeping your overall health and fitness in order. Cardio of this kind is also great for fat burning. Furthermore, it’s a wonderful way to explore the local area

We Asked: What are some exercises you recommend if you don’t have access to equipment? They said: knows Bodyweight training is awesome for building strength, burning fat and improving flexibility. To build muscle without weights, you need to continually challenge your muscles by doing increasingly difficult bodyweight exercises – just as you would use heavier weights in the gym. Some of the best exercises are as follows: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Push-ups Pull-ups Chin Ups Running or Walking Crunches Inverted rows. Tricep Dips. Handstand push-ups. Bodyweight biceps curls. Bodyweight triceps extensions. Lunges Squats. Bodyweight leg curls

Of course, there are tons more. You can incorporate these exercises into a pre-existing routine or create a new workout made up of exercises that you haven’t tried before.

Just make sure to have fun. Keeping things simple and staying committed to your routine will reduce stress and increase productivity. Be sure to have nourishing snacks available, make healthy dining choices and move your body. Even better, get your co-workers or travel companions to join you.
