Business Update Faringdon Retail Park was officially opened at the beginning of last month and already we have seen an increase in footfall in the town centre; even Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant paid a visit after the official opening. The Town Team engaged with a lot of the visitors to the retail park over the opening weekend and collected some useful data. They will be monitoring the footfall and feedback from the town retailers over the coming months and we look forward to hearing of their findings later in the year. Since the opening, the Chamber of Commerce hosted a meeting with the developer and store managers. On the subject of community engagement, all were very positive and Aldi have already supported local charity, Root and Branch, who promote recovery for people who experience mental health difficulties. Waitrose will be making monthly donations to local charities and good causes via their green token scheme; the Sensory Garden, the Pump House Project and Faringdon preschool have already benefited from a share of the first £500 on offer. The developer of the retail park reported that the opening of the new stores has already galvanised the interest of several businesses looking to invest in our town. This should lead to an announcement shortly of further development in the area behind Aldi. The Vale of White Horse District Council recently facilitated a business workshop which was well attended and provided some lively discussion on the issues facing business owners in Faringdon. We will need to "watch this space" for the outcomes from this meeting – Karen Roberts, the new business coordinator at the Town Council will now work on an action plan which we hope to report on in a future column.
Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Faringdon Business Breakfast Club was joined by BBC Radio Oxford for the March meeting. BBC Radio Oxford launched a new team on 6th march and wanted to celebrate by visiting groups in the local area. We were delighted to welcome roving reporter Lilley Mitchell to talk about all things breakfast, business and Faringdon. I would imagine she had an interesting contrast at her next stop - Stanford Primary School! It was great to see a few new business owners join our group – and tell us more about their new ventures. From a unique form of martial arts to business coaching, accountants, HR Consultants, estate agents, virtual assistants and children’s mental and sexual health trainers, we really are a diverse bunch. Following the usual 60 second round to hear about the businesses in the room, Jonathan Russell and Lawrence Harrison gave us an informal and impromptu overview of the impact of the new digital tax system that will affect us all in the next couple of years. I think we all came away understanding more about the way this system will affect us. Our next meeting will be on 3rd April at 7:30am at The Bell. There is no membership fee to belong to FBBC and no need to make referrals – you just need to pay £10 for breakfast and be prepared to chat to other local, friendly business people. We would love to see you there. Contact Graham.Dawson@routes2success.com for more details.

0 0 0 1 Until recent years it would not have been possible to toast St George’s Day with a glass of English whisky, as legal whisky distilling in England came to a halt around the end of the 19th Century. However, the new millennium saw the whisky industry in England reviving, with a partnership between St Austell Brewery and Healey’s Cyder Farm getting the ball rolling in 2003, but since I last wrote about this new wave of English distilling, things have moved on apace so I think it’s worth a quick round up of what’s currently happening. St George’s Distillery in Norfolk commenced distilling in 2006 and is now well established. They don’t have a particular distillery ‘style’ as their range includes lightly peated, heavily peated and unpeated whiskies, matured in a variety of casks, but they have already produced some memorable whiskies (including a very popular rum cask finish) and their reputation is growing to the extent that in 2015 Jim Murray named their Chapter 14 European Whisky of the Year in his Whisky Bible. Closer to home, the Cotswolds Distillery ran their first spirit in 2014 and this is destined for release as whisky in October this year.
Using local organic barley that is malted in Warminster, this compact and attractive distillery has a spirit still with a steep Lyne arm and a boil bulb to produce a lighter style of spirit. The flavour profile they are aiming for is ‘unpeated with strong notes of barley sugar, honey and vanilla typical of maturation in quality first fill American bourbon casks. We will also age our whisky in sherry casks which will impart a rich, fruity depth with notes of raisins, figs, toffee, chocolate and Christmas cake.’ Can’t wait to try the bottle I have reserved! Also opened in 2014, with single malt production commencing in 2015, is the Lakes Distillery, near Bassenthwaite Lake. With a founder who helped set up Arran Distillery and a Master Distiller who worked at Lagavulin before becoming manager of the John Dewar distilleries, this new distillery certainly has some solid credentials to build on. Currently selling their own gin and vodka, plus a British Isles blended whisky, the first bottling of Lakes Malt is due out in 2018. Dartmoor Distillery is fortunate enough to have on board whisky industry veteran Frank McHardy, who spent many years at Springbank Distillery. Their barley is grown and malted locally, then made into wash at Dartmoor Brewery before being distilled on their alembic still from Cognac. Spirit first ran earlier this year and is now in cask waiting its time to be shown to the world. With several other distilleries up and running (including London Distillery Company, Adnams Brewery, and Chase Distillery in Herefordshire - known for its vodka but which distilled its first whisky in 2011) these certainly are exciting times for English whisky.

Wine Choice?
Rob.. The Cheese Man! Best Cornish Pasty’s. Really Tasty Gammon Ham.
Rob
01367 241702 How to Choose Wine in a Restaurant It’s likely that we’ve all been there at some point. Let’s set the scene. The wine list is being passed around the table like it’s a hot potato – the group you are dining with are all eating something completely different (making the wine complimenting the food scenario virtually impossible) and no one wants to discuss the budget on the wine. Arrhhh – those awkward moments – time for a quick visit to the ladies to avoid the situation? Fear not – here are a few tips to avoid the wine list showdown! 1. Is there a wine waiter or sommelier? Many restaurants will have at least one member of the team who can offer guidance and suggestions. A reputable restaurant will pride themselves on its wine list as well as the food offering, so don’t be afraid to ask. Let them know what you are eating, the styles of wine you enjoy most and indicate what you would like to spend. 2. Ask to taste. Telegraph wine writer and author Susie Atkins says ‘if a wine is open, which is certainly the case with those served by the glass, then a half-decent waiter should be pleased to give you a small sip. Just ask – what’s the worst that can happen? They might say no (never mind), or the wine might taste awful (thank goodness you didn’t buy a whole bottle)’. 3. Who’s eating what? A broad guide – red wines pair with red meat and white wines with white…or check what flavour dominates the dish. Chances are that everyone will be eating something completely different and depending on the party size, you could opt for a bottle of white, a bottle of rosé and a bottle of red. You can always order more of the most popular. 4. Check the menu for wine pairing suggestions. 5. What style of food are you eating? It makes sense to pair tapas with Spanish wine or Italian influenced food with Italian wines as there is a natural bond between the flavour profiles of the same nationality. 6. Select by country or region. You may not have heard of the wineries listed on the menu, however may have a broad idea of what the region’s wine taste like. New Zealand produces zesty white wines; Australian reds are known to be pronounced primary fruit flavours, whereas Chilean and Argentinian wines are rich and fruity. Call on your own interpretations and share what you know with your fellow diners. Don’t be afraid to try something new. By sharing with others, you can discover new flavours that will enhance your dining experience!

April Ramblings!
| The Advertiser | page 9 |
Welcome, dear Reader, to an April ramble around a selection of topics that caught my eye for this month. I write as the Martians of H G Well’s War of the World’s have now invaded London and I’ve just seen a dazzlingly-yellow Brimstone butterfly starting its new year of life, together with several bumblebees zooming overhead, being busy in the milder air under a watery sun. Lesser Celandine – the Welsh Eye of Spring – are shining like little suns from within a cloud of green shield-like leaves. Our daffodils are well away, even the Welsh species – and travelling West beyond the M48 Severn Bridge, the two miles of a golden corridor is already in flower. My re-discovery of the world of bees seems to be echoed by the UK veterinary press, following a newly-formed British Bee Veterinary Association. BBVA President, John Hill, said that bees are considered part of a veterinarian’s responsibilities in many European countries, particularly in the East. Vet students at many vet schools in countries such as France and Spain find bee health and biology in their syllabuses. Only now in the UK is there being made more attention to formal training availability for student and qualified vets. Beekeepers can cope much more than adequately with bee welfare in the absence of veterinary assistance, so, for the BBVA, the challenge – even the buzz words – is to learn hard, fast and thoroughly enough to prove to the beekeeping community that we can make an informed and practical contribution. Currently overall responsibility for the health and welfare of British bees lies with the entomologists and plant health specialists at DEFRA’s National Bee Unit, in York, rather than with the State Veterinary Service which should be the responsible body under EU food-producing regulations. Also, as a recognized food producing species, the honey bee is unique in being the only non-vertebrate species for which licensed veterinary products are available for use in the UK. I understand that most, if not all of the 60+ BBVA members, keep their own hives and in doing so will contribute to the national surveillance work of the NBU. Varroa mites, Foulbrood bacterial infections, the arrival of the predatory Asian Hornet and also the Small Hive Beetle are a few of the challenges faced by such underrated and hard-working, absolutely socially-amazing Honey Bees. All this information is vital to all of those who keep bees and can be extended to the problems of the bumble bees and Mason bees that are buzzing around me already in the garden. I would so like to take up bee keeping and will visit a Client’s local hives to start my formal learning process! I rather like keeping our dogs, cats, rare breed Old Gloucester cattle and currently rare breed Welsh sheep, there’s no better way to learn how to look after them than by keeping your own. But, would my sheep appreciate a swarm inside their big fleeces as in a Shaun the Sheep episode!!! One story in the Times newspaper is of genuine scientific work to recreate mammoths from well-preserved DNA samples. But could these giants actually live in this age of climate warming with those shaggy coats, with Arctic ice and tundra, as well as southern ice land masses such as Antarctica melting. Enough seems to be bothering detractors of the introduction of post-Ice Age mammals back into what is now the UK – bears, wolves and lynx for example than to add such a big mammal to the list. With those despicable people involved in the slaughter of that poor rhino in a Paris zoological collection to cut off the ivory, would mammoths again join the list of extinct mammals cut down by human greed – those remaining rhinos, tigers and elephants? Stay Grounded Coffee Van Here are a few reasons to visit the Folly Woodland: Ÿ You have a dog and you’re there every day come rain or shine; Ÿ You’re aiming for 10,000+ steps a day and the little hill to the top makes those steps even more worthwhile; Ÿ You have children who adore finding all the creatures and wooden sculptures; Ÿ It’s part of your running route and you use the hill for some hardcore interval training; Ÿ YOU LOVE COFFEE (or tea or hot chocolate) AND CAKE AND WANT TO VISIT STAY GROUNDED COFFEE VAN!….. Photo courtesy Swindon Advertiser This working mainly during April and October thing, has been rather nice but having had 3 holidays since December (Iceland, Chile and The Cotswolds) it really is time to turn my attention to making a few ££ before the bank decides I am simply not worth their time and effort. Spring has sprung and we are therefore in the Folly Woodland every Friday morning and all day Sunday from the beginning of April. When I say ‘we’ I mean the ‘Stay Grounded’ Team of Mr Hoppy (the gorgeous Citroen 2CV AKS400 van), Mrs Silver (the amazing coffee Machine), Alfie (the hard working grinder) and Jane (the one who brings the magic together and makes the drinks). Any Roald Dahl fans may recognise characters from Esio Trot but you’ll need to visit the woodland and ask to find out why…. We serve a full espresso menu using coffee from Ue Coffee Roasters from Witney, tea from their sister company, Jeeves and Jericho, and a scrumptious single origin hot chocolate from Ivory Coast along with our homemade cakes and bakes. Our little teaser session on St Patrick’s Day went down rather well (as did the Guinness cake) despite the ridiculously cold wind and we are now very excited about the season ahead. As well as Folly Hill we will be popping up at local Markets including Faringdon’s Saturday markets and Bitten Street, Oxford www.bittenoxford.co.uk plus a number of local festivals and events. Check out our facebook page www.facebook.com/staygroundedcoffeevan for details of where we will be and watch out for a possible Dot (personal trainer) and Stay Grounded collaboration of an exercise session in the Folly Woodland followed by coffee and a recovery snack. Good idea huh! Jane and the ‘Stay Grounded’ gang PS Don’t forget Folly Tower will be open every 1st and 3rd Sunday from April to October Jane Rennells

For some, the preferred choice for getting that extra reception room, or a couple more bedrooms or that long deserved ensuite and dressing room is to extend. It certainly cuts down on the stress of moving, there’s no need to change schools, and as long as you get on with them, you’ll retain your friendly neighbours! One of the first things to consider is, don’t extend if you’re planning to move soon afterwards. And by soon, we’d say give it at least three and ideally closer to five years before putting the property on the market. The issue being that it’s extremely rare to make back the cost of the extension any sooner. Mentally, we tend to consider the value of the property before we extend and add the cost of the works to get the new and increased finished value. Now, it will depend on what sort of property you're looking to extend, but let’s consider the relatively common one of taking a three bedroom property and extending over the garage to get a fourth bedroom. From a developer’s point of view, the cost of building a three bedroom verses a four bedroom one is only marginally different. They bulk buy all the materials, have the equipment in situ and the person-power to get the job done. It’s always going to be more expensive, to in effect retrofit. You may need to make some structural changes to support your planned changes, and materials and labour costs are going to be higher. Staying in the property for a reasonable time after the extension means that any improvements you’ve made are swallowed up in the natural inflation of the property. Secondly, whilst you’ll be extending to meet a need that you have, be mindful that you may want to sell the property at some future point. Fulfilling that lifetime ambition of building a fully functional Millennium Falcon cockpit with a combined sauna and bar is probably best saved for a large lottery win! When looking to extend, you need to consider what effect will the extension have to the value to your home. Will the work result in an increase in value the same as the cost, more than the cost or less than? To get an understanding of this aspect, please invite us around and we’ll chat through your plans. We have done it ourselves and have also had the benefit of seeing many houses where others have done so with varying results. With our knowledge and experience of what improvements and extensions give the best return on cost we can provide clear and concise advice. That doesn’t mean your idea isn’t a good one if it suits what you want but it will mean you can proceed in the full knowledge of the options and impact. If you’re a first time extender, the whole process can appear quite daunting. You’ll be dealing with local planning authorities, building regulation requirements, architects and obviously builders. You can drop by our offices anytime and we’ll happily chat through any plans you have, although Jenny Preece aspiring Han Solos need not apply!

The Trouble With Goats And Sheep
WE WANT YOUR CAR! CASH 4 CAR’S
By Joanna Cannon Walking through Soho the other evening, green shoots of spring were all around me. I was not wearing a winter coat. Pavement tables overflowing with laughing couples guzzling rosé. Seeming to all intents as if they were emerging from a chrysalis named ‘long, cold winter’ and were determined to enjoy every heady moment of even one warm-ish evening. It was intoxicating and I found myself optimistic in that moment in the hope of a long hot summer. My thoughts then turned to The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, set during the long, hot summer of 1976, and marking the fiction debut of former doctor Joanna Cannon. Plaudits have flown in from all quarters on this, not least from The Times, who called it ‘a superior debut’. I am fully in agreement. When Margaret Creasy disappears from her home in a quiet cul de sac, it falls upon ten-year-olds Grace and Tilly to take the investigation of her disappearance into their own hands. Advised by their vicar that ‘God is in all things’, precocious Grace leads the charge into the lives of her neighbours, convinced that God will lead them to the missing Mrs Creasy. The trouble is that their quiet cul de sac hides more secrets and lies than they could have ever anticipated. The disappearance of Mrs Creasy proves to be the catalyst that brings these to the surface years after a series of events that changed the dynamic in the neighbourhood forever. The title refers to the sorting in the bible of sheep (the godly) from the goats (the ungodly), and is Grace and Tilly’s guide to making sense in their childlike way of the strange events in which they find themselves embroiled. Do not be fooled that this is a light-hearted read. It’s humorous and well-drawn but contains serious lessons on the dangers of judging by appearances and living with the consequences of one’s actions. The long hot summer of 1976 is so vividly rendered that its presence is so keenly felt it becomes almost like a character itself. Her insights into the complexities of human nature, show a keen eye developed through someone trained in psychiatry. Cannon is a writer of distinct sensitivity and obvious talent, who has me excited about where her journey is going to take her next.

Claire Marie: 07774 510599 Take a walk on the spooky side with Vintage Goth Shadows! People are always intrigued by what goes on at these events, especially for those that are scared of the unknown. Not knowing what to expect, is only natural! Our parties have a fun quirky atmosphere with a little bit of spookiness injected into it! Starting off the evening with a meet and greet, where our guests can relax and enjoy the delights of a Victorian style cold buffet with gala pie, cheeses, salmon, cooked gammon, all served on our vintage selection of oval crockery, enjoyed with a glass of fizz. We have a chat about our own personal experiences with the paranormal, I always reassure those that are a little bit scared there is nothing to be worried about. Once everyone is relaxed and raring to go, then off into the séance room. Everyone is always amazed by the way the room looks, with velvet flocked walls and our old Victorian table, set up with gothic style candlestick holders, dimmed red lamps, as in the Victorian times they used a red light to invite the spirits forward. Once everyone is seated, I start the séance with protection, this is to reassure everyone is safe. We all join hands and summon the spirits in the room, or whom ever haunts the building. Straight away guests start to feel a presence, dark shadows, hot and cold spots coming and going, some have been touched. I continue by using a mirror scrying technique with red light, another way of contacting the spirits which our guests love to do! Once we have tried this, we move onto glass divination, we place a glass in the middle of the table building the energy around us, the glass starts to move slightly, it slowly builds up and gets stronger and stronger! As the glass starts to move, people start to asks questions. On this occasion someone had a loved one come threw, this happens often whilst doing glass divination, it's always a nice feeling to know that they are there watching over us. As the séance comes to a end we talk about our experiences that have happened that night, whilst finishing off the buffet and wine, look around the shop. Want to try something different? Get yourselves along to see me in the shop, London street, Faringdon. I look forward to your visit.

Move More, Sit Less According to some studies we can sit from 7 to 15 hours a day. We go from sitting in the car – sitting at our desks – sitting in the car sitting on the sofa; a typical day for some of us. Sitting for long periods is thought to slow the metabolism, which affects the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, blood pressure and break down body fat. Breaking up long periods of sitting time with short periods of activity helps prevent the negative effects of reduced muscle activity. Being seated for long periods can be thought to cause the body to shut down or stagnate! Over the past few years there has been a lot of research on the effects of sitting and inactivity, research prompted by our increasingly sedentary lifestyles. The body is designed to be active and is very effective at dealing with being on the move all day long. When you stop moving for extended periods of time, it's like telling your body it's time to shut down. Although sitting can be a nice break from a busy day, it can result in a lot of processes that the body stops doing or does more slowly. When you sit: Your blood flows more slowly and your muscles burn less fat Your body's ability to respond to insulin is reduced Your abdominal contents compress, slowing down digestion Your brain function slows You are liable to neck strain, sore shoulders and back. (Usually from bad posture whilst watching TV or doing computer work.) The discs in your back become compressed and can lose flexibility over time. (Your discs are meant to expand and contract as you move allowing them to absorb blood and nutrients.) Your abdominal's can weaken as they go unused. Your hips can tighten leading to reduced range of motion and therefore reduced mobility. The lack of activity may cause weak bones and even osteoporosis through reduced weight bearing. You are at increased risk of vascular issues such as varicose veins. These are just some of the ill-effects of not moving! So how can we limit some of these issues to improve our health and well being? Taking an active break from sitting every 30 minutes or so is recommended by some experts, engaging your muscles and bones gives your bodily functions a boost. Many studies have shown that being physically active can lower the risk of heart disease whilst being sedentary can have the opposite effect. There is no doubt that moving or not will affect the health of your heart. Those of us that sit for long periods in the day are more likely to have larger waistlines, higher BMI’s and less blood sugar control than those who get up and move during the day. Yes, it can take effort to get up and move about, especially when you are busy or tired, but it can be done in small steps which seem more doable. Some tips to reduce sitting time: Stand on the train or bus, take the stairs and walk up escalators set a reminder to stand up every 30 minutes, stand up at your desk when working, walk around while on the phone, take a walk break when you make a coffee or tea, park further away from the store when you go shopping, take up more active hobbies, get up and dance take the dog for longer walks, add 15 min's of walking into your daily routine, do a few squats during the adverts when watching TV, generally, add movement to your day Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

01367 240402 Faringdon Business Group members came together last month to provide funding to help the Faringdon Junior School restock their library with new books, which they hope will provide knowledge and inspiration to the community’s next generation of fledgling local entrepreneurs. Following an audit by the Oxfordshire Library Service of the school’s current library, which deemed many of the books factually outdated, FBG put out an appeal on their Facebook page calling for local businesses to donate funds to purchase books for the school’s new library. Local businesses including Perry Bishop, Wrag Barn, The Oxford Detective Bureau, Larder & Tuck Box, The Barber Shop, Bydand PM and Den Boer responded to the “call to action” provide enough funds to purchase over fifty new books for the school. The range of both fictional and factual books were presented to the children by FBG Chairperson, Kiera Bentley and Vice Chair and Treasurer, Paul Hukins at a special assembly in March where the children were given an inspirational speech on the importance of reading. Any businesses that would like to help fund any additional books should get in touch with the team via our facebook page. Representatives from FBG also attended a meeting on the 23rd March alongside the Town Team, individual business owners and Vale 4 Business, to provide input into the future development of the Faringdon Business and Innovation Strategy Action Plan 20172020. A draft plan will be drawn based on the feedback and is expected to be shared with the FBG soon. Informal sessions will be held in April for interested parties to share ideas and opinions about the plan, before we provide a further round of feedback. Watch out for notification of these meetings on our facebook group page.
