Happy Easter!

Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Our Faringdon Business Breakfast Club meeting in March welcomed Rob Spratley from Rebalance Chiropractic in Shrivenham. There was much shifting of chairs and sitting up straight as Rob started to talk! Rob gave a very interesting presentation on how we can help ourselves to sit, walk and even sleep more comfortably by thinking about our posture. Rob specialises in small adjustments to posture and gave us interesting information about how the whole body can be affected by a top rib being too far forward. Over the next couple of months, FBBC welcomes Pauline Beesley in April to talk about how we as business owners and (in some cases) residents can help Faringdon to become a tourist destination. In May, Su Copeland will be helping us prepare for the forthcoming changes in regulations due to GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations). All welcome, do book a place on our website www.fbbc-networking.co.uk.

WHO’S NEXT?

Business Update

Happy Easter to all our readers. Last month saw the 800th anniversary of Faringdon’s Market Charter. This was acknowledged with a celebration at the Tuesday Farmer’s market and a medieval themed Saturday market. You can’t help but notice the sight and sound of the bunting with the distinctive Folly Tower and pink pigeon adorning the Market Place, marking this milestone. The celebrations will continue during the year with an official event in the summer. With Budgens recently shutting its doors and Lloyds Bank set to close in the summer, there is a feeling that retail businesses are struggling in the town. On the plus side there are fewer vacant premises now, than there have been over recent years and the vacancy rate is still well below the national average. Furthermore, fantastic events and celebrations are occurring throughout this anniversary year, so there will be plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurial people out there to exploit the increased interest in our town.

The Faringdon Town Team are actively promoting our tourism offerings and Pauline Beesley has arranged for Faringdon to participate in the Cotswolds Hare trail. This initiative promotes the wider Cotswolds by placing decorated hare sculptures in the towns and villages, producing a trail for people who then search for them over the course of the year. If you are interested in having a hare in your business premises, please contact the Town Team or Pauline in Granny Beesley’s sweet shop. Please also check out Vale4Business’ website to catch up on the free seminars and workshops they are facilitating. The Town Team are now distributing a monthly business newsletter (paper and electronic). If you do not currently receive one and would like to be on the list, please contact them.

It was a real joy to welcome Springbank Distillers and W.M. Cadenhead when they recently presented a tasting for us. Scotland’s oldest independent family owned distillery and oldest independent bottlers respectively, both are under the ownership of the Mitchells, whose approach to whisky is a whisky lover’s dream as they produce good quality bottlings that are priced in relation to the cost of production rather than at the highest possible price that the market will take. Situated in Campbeltown, Springbank is a very traditional and wonderfully eccentric distillery (just ask Ken about his memorable week at their popular whisky school…). Most unusually, all of the whisky making process is carried out on site, from malting the barley to bottling the whisky, and they don’t like change at Springbank – for a very sound reasons I hasten to add, as basically they know that people like Springbank for what it is and therefore why change for the sake of change? The whisky produced is either two and a half times distilled (Springbank), peated (Longrow) or three times distilled (Hazelburn) and Grant Macpherson did explain briefly on the night just how distilling whisky 2.5 times works but let’s just say it’s a little complicated! The Springbank 10 year old is, as Grant put it, a staple for any whisky drinkers cupboard. With a peating level of just 1215ppm and a mix of sherry and bourbon cask maturation it’s packed with flavour, with fruit, earthy but light smokiness, and some sweetness. It’s older brother, the 12 year old cask strength, is a limited release that only comes out twice a year and was delightful. There’s a greater proportion of sherry cask maturation and it is incredibly smooth for a 56.3%abv whisky. There’s just enough bite plus the typical dried fruit and spice that comes from sherry cask maturation, all blending seamlessly with a coal type peatiness. We also tasted a Kilkerran 12 year old, which is produced at Glenglyle distillery in Campbletown. Founded in 1872 and brought back to life in 2004 by Mitchells, the whisky has to be bottled under the name of Kilkerran as the Glengyle name was bought by someone else. Another very tasty whisky, it is fruity with a hint of smoke and vanilla and a lovely mouthfeel. We had the additional treat of tasting whisky from W.M. Cadenhead, the independent bottlers that J. & A. Mitchell own. Known for their un-chillfiltered, no added colour, small batch and single cask whiskies, the Cadenhead’s 20 year old Aultmore and 20 year old Glenrothes we sampled demonstrated just why there is such a cult following for these whiskies – with the sparkling fresh, eucalyptus and citrus Aultmore just edging it for me. Rounding off with the peated Longrow at the end of the night it’s no surprise everyone found it hard to pick a favourite – they were all so good! Fran Thomas

The Secret Diary Of Hendrik Groen 84 1\4 Years Old With the day in day out tumult of bad news coming at us from every angle, I’ve increasingly been seeking escapist fiction, or fiction firmly entrenched in humour. Not completely though. I’m a very political animal and can’t stay away from voicing my opinions on Twitter (@afternyneeditor) for long. But I can choose what I want to immerse myself in after hours. And this month, one of the books I’ve chosen is The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen. Woman & Home labelled it ‘The geriatric Adrian Mole’. The cover has a mobility scooter with a red balloon tied to it. I rather hoped I was in for a treat. And I was. I enjoyed it tremendously, as have many readers around the world. It’s been translated into over twenty languages, and seems to have struck a chord with it’s ‘live for the moment while you have it’ message. Hendrik lives in a retirement complex, and declaring himself happy with accepting that life is over, establishes the ‘OldBut-Not-Dead’ Club alongside his anarchic friend Evert and Hendrik’s sweetheart Eefje. The members of the club arrange a series of excursions that encompass activities that keep their hearts, bodies and minds active, and find themselves warring against the rules of the retirement complex in doing so. The book – which the real life Hendrik insists is the complete truth – never ventures into slapstick humour, which is a relief, because in remaining sensitive to the issues involved in growing older, I think it tugs more faithfully at the heartstrings. Even through the trails and tribulations, the drama isn’t overplayed, making the set pieces realistic and easy to relate to. I loved the character of Evert, Hendrik’s trouble making best friend, who truly doesn’t care what others think of him, and the ‘romance’ between Hendrik and Eefje is finely rendered and poignant. The book served its purpose; for that week, I looked around me with fresh eyes and felt free again to wonder at the mysteries of the world around us. Hendrik’s ‘seize the day’ message is one for all of us. It’s a book with heart and soul and a reminder to seize the day, and sift through the travails of contemporary life to find those nuggets of pleasure that are surely the purpose of all existence.

April Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 9 |

Hello and welcome to my springtime ramble! The effects of the prolonged bitterly cold and very drying easterly wind, the clash of the warm and cold front, is only just becoming less obvious as I write. Long drifts remain and yet the drifts of snowdrop in field corners, wooded areas and gardens have reappeared almost in defiance of the snow and ice. Daffodils are a little crooked in shape but resolute to flower and thickets of bluebell speared leaves resembled cauliflower heads when covered by snow. The quantity of mixed table bird food used was noticeable and very necessary. We had both redwings and fieldfares making use of it, as well as the flocks of goldfinches and other regular birds. Even two pheasants patrolling underneath the table. Our cats enjoyed that spectacle from the warmth of the indoor window ledge! A blizzard-hit Denbighshire farmer, witnessed a “miracle and a mirage” as he attempted to rescue hundreds of sheep from deep snowdrifts, after digging out more than 60 ewes on Thursday St David’s Day, Iwan Davies in Corwen came across another sheep that was neck, deep in snow, after creating the space to pull her out, “there were two new-born lambs behind her and they were still alive! It’s a miracle to be honest, because usually they die! Their mother must have given birth to them last night and, luckily for them, they were caught in an air pocket created by the draught from a gap in a wall. I took them home and put them under the hairdryer and they’re doing fine now!” Sheep are tough – our Welsh girls looked like walking marshmallows, most of the time, sheltering particularly from the east wind, until they shook most of it off their thick, dense fleeces. We do hope that losses all over the country will be minimal, miracles do happen! Another issue was the collection of milk, particularly in Somerset, where the quantity of snow that fell, and the continuous subsequent drifting, blocked many main roads leading to dairy farms in the area. Tractors cleared what they could from their farm tracks up to the main roads. One farm near Frome had no collections for 2 days despite the best efforts of the Arla tanker drivers. 8000 litres of milk had to be let go as storage was only designed for 4000. Under the Arla farmer-co-op arrangements, such farmers may well be paid for the cost of production for that volume of milk. Lastly about the Emma Snow, has anyone noticed the existence of any SNOIL, or as it’s called in Canada, Snirt? Strong to gale force winds, freeze-dried un-cropped soil blown into drifts along with the fine frozen snow that was falling gave drifts of various hues of browns. This was seen in Nottinghamshire and recorded on Twitter. National Pet Month is now upon us and there will be events to celebrate it and that may well include your own veterinary practice. Now in its 29th year, National Pet Month (NPM) is a leading educational charity, with responsible pet ownership at the core. Do feel welcome to get involved in this year’s NPM April 1st to May 7th and help to raise awareness of responsible pet ownership while celebrating our pets, by taking part in discussions on good pet care as well as helping to raise funds for UK pet charities. NPM will also help launch Pet Care Aware, a new initiative designed to bring pet professionals and pet friendly organisations together to help spread the responsible pet care message throughout the rest of the year. A total of 10 new cases of CRGV – “Alabama Rot” have been positively established by Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, who are based in Winchester. Please always contact your veterinary practice for advice should you see a skin sore, not caused by any known injury - usually on the lower half of the leg - seen as a patch of red skin or as an open, wet, ulcer-like area. Washing their feet after muddy woodland walks or after running through stagnant or moving water may help and allows a good, clear check on the skin in the area. Butterflies will be out and about soon, if not already. Save those early dandelion flowers from the mower if you can – they’re often the first drink of nectar! May I also urge you, give consideration to planting and growing nectarrich pot plants and shrubs for both butterflies and other pollinators in our gardens. My suggested plants are Verbena, Erysimum Bowles Mauve, lavender, Orgeano and Red Valerian to name a few. Perhaps follow Kate Bradbury, Butterfly Conservation Ambassador, on Twitter @kate_bradbury. It makes me feel the sunshine with more warmth and welcome to consider sharing such lovely blooms with the other inhabitants of the garden. Have a great and safe month and I’ll join you in a few weeks’ time. Thank you. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

Spring Into Easter!

There is the distinct possibility that as we write this, to extol the virtues of a fine Easter and Spring, that the Vale of The White Horse will be knee deep in snow! If that is the case, you will probably find one of the Waymark team sledging down White Horse Hill or up at The Folly! Spring is typically the sign of new beginnings, renewals and rejuvenation. For us in the Northern Hemisphere, spring time officially runs from March 20th until June 21st. After the cold and grey of winter, it is time to hopefully put away the warm, thick coats and enjoy the longer sunny days. The Easter long weekend and school holidays is the perfect time to meet with family and friends and indulge in some well-earned chocolate after Lent. For the children, it is a time to get off the ‘screens’ and get outside. Once outside, who can resist the range of cute furry, fluffy and woolly animals that appear at this time of year along with the great spray of natural and woodland colour. Bumble-bees, boxing hares and bluebells are for a brief time an exciting sight and an indication that we are heading into summer.

Providing fun for all the family will be the various Easter egg hunts and local events taking place in and around the local area. A personal favourite at Waymark are the ones organised by the National Trust. We suspect the main advantages of these are that the treats consumed can be burnt off with a run through the woodland or by taking in the venues gardens! For us at Waymark, it represents the start of one of the busiest times of years for new instructions coming to the market and applicants out viewing. Springtime is traditionally when a property can look at its best. The light allows for fantastic internal photography and the gardens are at their colourful best. The lighter evenings mean more time to be out and about viewing with less dependence on cramming everything into a weekend. Getting your house on the market in Spring will typically mean a move in the summer. People can take advantage of the long school holidays to get in and get settled. This will be our first Spring in the new Faringdon office having opened in October 2017 and we are looking forward to it. For now, we would like to wish all our clients past, present and future a Happy Easter and if you are planning to move for the summer, please drop by for a chat. We cannot promise there will be any chocolate left, however we can promise a friendly professional service.

Every little dog deserves a big adventure! Do you ever return home to find your little dog has become bored, made up his own entertainment and chewed something he really shouldn’t have? Or do you feel guilty when that sad little face watches you leave for work from the window every day? Then maybe it’s time to start looking for a dog walker? To keep our dogs healthy and happy they need exercise, play, and affection. This is true for little dogs as well as big dogs. It’s a sad fact that due to our busy lives and ever-increasing work schedules more of our dogs are now spending their days home alone leaving them bored, unhappy and under exercised. Often leading them to develop severe behaviour and health problems. This can be easily avoided by getting a dog walker in to help share the load while you’re at work. I have been running Liza’s Pet Care and looking after the pets of Faringdon since May 2017. But now, I’ve decided to launch Liza’s Little Dog Adventures after one of my clients told me she was worried about her small dog being overwhelmed by big dogs. I’ve also shared this problem with other little dogs that I walk. This got me thinking, could I help other small dog owners who are looking for a dog walker but worry about putting their little dogs into a large group walk with bigger dogs. Liza’s Little Dog Adventures are specialist walks designed exclusively for the smaller dog. I only walk two small dogs on every adventure, so you can rest assured that your little dog will be kept safe and get all the love and attention that they deserve. We visit exciting locations where your little dog can explore the sights and smells the countryside has to offer. With every adventure filled with fun and breed specific exercise, I guarantee your little dog will have a great time leaving him contented and relaxed until you return home. If you’re feeling guilty that your little dog is not getting the exercise and attention they need and deserve when you’re at work. Then let Liza’s Pet Care help take the weight of worry off your shoulders and give your little dog everything he needs when you can’t be there. MEL WIGLEY TAKES OVER THE HR DEPT EAST COTSWOLD'S An HR professional with two decades of experience has set up her own business offering advice and support to SMEs (Small & Medium Enterprises) in the East Cotswold's. Based in Faringdon, Mel Wigley will offer services to businesses in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, in towns across the Cotswold's including Cirencester, Tetbury, Burford, Lechlade, Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, Carterton and Kemble, through her company The HR Dept East Cotswolds. A keen motorcyclist who also volunteers as a Sergeant in the RAF’s local Air Cadet Squadron, Ms Wigley has started the company to give herself a better work life balance. Having worked for charities, the NHS, major corporate's like Thames Water and as a consultant to smaller firms, she said the time was right to set up on her own. “I wanted more flexibility, and time around my family,” she said. “I have a great deal of past experience to draw on and having not spent the past 20 years with just one company gives me wider scope and more flexibility. “The skills and experiences I’ve picked up along the way are all transferable, as employment law and the principles behind contracts can be applied across the board. So I’m not expecting to come across anything from an HR point of view, which I haven’t seen before. “Of course what is new is that it’s the first time I’ve owned and run my own business, although I’ve overseen similar operations of organisations I’ve worked with before. “But it’s certainly like getting a new job, with all the challenges you’d expected. I’m really excited about it though – there’s lots to learn and it’s going to stretch me, but it’s all going to help me grow as a professional.” Ms Wigley said that the current business climate was challenging for SMEs, with a raft of employment legislation to come to terms with. “There have been several changes recently for business owners to adapt to,” she said. “Now, with GDPR set to impact all businesses in 2018, there’s another thing to be aware of and prepare for. “For The HR Dept, our key message is that we can offer business owners confidence in letting us look after their people, so they can focus on the business. “SME owners don’t need to try and be legal experts and tie themselves up in knots with what’s happening in employment law. We are experts who can look after that for you and let you concentrate on your business. The HR Dept currently has a network of over 70 franchisees providing HR services in 100 territories in the UK, Ireland and Australia. Managing director Gemma Tumelty said: “Mel will be a great asset to the business communities across the East Cotswold's and we are pleased to see someone of her calibre and experience offering HR services to SMEs there. We wish her all the best operating the licence and are sure she will make it a great success.”

The Key to Weight Loss Ÿ All diet plans work for some of us for some of the time Ÿ All diets, just by their nature, have start dates and end dates Ÿ Pretty much all diets are unsustainable in the long term Ÿ Most diets eliminate certain food groups Our emotional attachment to food is key to understanding why we lose or gain weight. Our feelings, emotions, hormones and well-being dictate our moods and therefore our ability to deal with, handle or at least be satisfied with what we eat. Committing to a ‘diet plan’ can put a lot of pressure on us to succeed with our weight loss. Sometimes it is that pressure which breaks us and we give up. We all know by reducing our calorie intake we change our energy balance and achieve weight loss. However, our body is wonderful at re balancing and eventually preventing easy onward weight loss by activating certain hormonal re balancing systems. So why do we think ‘eating healthily’ is just boring and ineffective? Improving the quality of our food is a proven, effective way to achieve long term benefits to our weight, health and vitality. It is easy to achieve as well! Improving the quality of what we eat allows you to cut back on added sugar, refined grains and processed foods in such a way that we don’t think we are giving those items up for good. When we concentrate on eating plenty of vegetables and whole foods we can improve our feeling of being satisfied and with our improved mood we are less likely to snack on sugary or processed foods. No need to count calories or limit portion sizes. Diet quality will help you lose and manage your weight loss particularly if you are seriously interested in long term results. Yes of course you need a little preparation to make sure you buy in quality ingredients that are nutrient dense and minimally processed but cooking at home does not have to be time consuming or difficult. No need to over think it! Steam the veg, grill, or even pan-fry, the meat, fish or halloumi, put on the plate and eat! Making a filling salad is not difficult and can be achieved in minutes! Eat this first – Fill your plate with vegetables add a good source of quality protein (fish, eggs, chicken etc). Sit at the table so you allow your brain to connect with the fact, that you have eaten. Wait at least 20 minutes before deciding that you are still wanting something sweet! If you are still hungry, actually if you have eaten enough quality food already I would argue you should not be hungry at all, then quality fruit, nuts, or maybe yogurt should do it for you. Only then would I say yes, alright, you can have that treat that you feel you cannot do without – but can you really? Remember, I have not told you what you can’t have but suggested that you improve what you do have. And if you really do want a sweet treat, try organic dark chocolate or organic ice-cream, or an all-butter shortbread – choose ones that have high quality ingredients so you keep the additives in processed food out of your body. Eating whole foods has been seen to improve various health markers such as body fat percentages, blood sugar levels and reduced waist size. What’s not to like? Weight control and long-term well being is better achieved through diet quality. EAT BETTER – FEEL BETTER – LOOK BETTER Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

What's In Your Wine? Isn’t wine just fermented grapes, you ask? Essentially, yes, but feeling rather ‘Dispatches’ like, we reveal the ingredients used in the winemaking processes that aren’t that widely known. The aim here is not to deter you from your favourite tipple, but to share with you the most common ingredients used in the act of making wine. In its raw state, wine is nature’s most marvellous miracle. Grapes alone contain everything they need to transform into a glass of vino. Leave a vat of grapes in a container over time, and eventually the yeasts from the skins will work to convert the fruit’s sugary juices into alcohol. The end product is a delectable liquid that has long been adored throughout history. Today, few wines are still made with that simple process. To start, vintners have found inventive ways to manipulate the terroir and have made it both an art form and a science to control the way each tiny fruit matures on the vines. In addition to this, modern winemakers have poured their lives into finding inventive ways to craft unique recipes by isolating aromas, manipulating specific flavours, and exploring different textures to create some truly remarkable wines. Aside from grapes, patience and passion, here are a few ingredients you may not have known were swirling around your wine glass. One of the most common additives in wine, Sulphur Dioxide (SO₂) acts as an antioxidant and antibiotic. Sulphur Dioxide is commonly used to preserve the grapes, stabilise the wine and prevent oxidation during the winemaking process. It is also commonly used to help sanitise barrels and other winemaking equipment. Potassium sorbate and potassium metabisulfite are used as a protector in the winemaking process to prevent bacteria and stop the yeast from spoiling. These ingredients are ideal to use together during the fermentation process, as they give the yeast a better opportunity to ferment efficiently, help prevent micro-organisms from spoiling your wine and improve the overall flavour whilst preventing browning in white wines. Calcium carbonate is commonly used in the winemaking process to reduce the acidity of the final product. Typically, a vintner will add this ingredient before or at the beginning of fermentation because it is less likely to affect the aroma of your wine. It is not unusual for calcium carbonate to be added when the grapes are having trouble ripening due to the climate in which they were grown. Sometimes, winemakers add sugar to the wine to help boost the alcohol content in their product. Known as chaptalisation, adding sugar to wine is mainly done to assist the yeast in the fermentation process. Very few winemakers add sugar to sweeten the wine. Adding sugar to wine is often used in cooler climates where grapes aren’t able to ripen fully before harvest. Oak has been used since the beginning of wine making to flavour a wine with strong notes of vanilla or subtle spices. Since only a small portion of the wine actually comes in contact with the barrel, some winemakers have taken to adding oak chips, powders or staves to a wine to evenly distribute those subtle flavours (i.e., leather, roasted marshmallow, cinnamon, cloves, etc.) before being strained out after fermentation. Tannins are found in the skins of the grape and add complexity to wine. It can be tricky to manage between crushing, macerations, maturation, climate changes, and more that occurs during the winemaking process. Powdered tannins (a.k.a. oenological tannins) have been used to help add bitterness or balance out the wine early in the vinification process to help boost grapes particularly grown in the warmer regions of the world.

Faringdon Bowling Club Some people reading this article might be surprised to discover that Faringdon has a Bowling Club let alone that it has been in the town since 1911. Tucked away behind houses in Gravel Walk the club has been in its present picturesque location since 1964. Possibly the town’s best kept secret. Contrary to popular belief the sport of bowls is not an old man’s game. It is, in fact, a sport for people of all ages and abilities. It is a very social game played in a friendly atmosphere and provides an ideal opportunity to meet new people. It is also a great way to keep fit whilst doing gentle exercise. If you are interested in having a go we offer taster sessions every Friday evening during the outdoor season. This year these will start on 20th, April from 6pm. We provide free coaching and use of equipment. You just need to wear flat soled shoes. As well as outdoor bowling we also offer Short Mat Bowls, indoors, during the winter months when the green is closed. There is also a ladies’ keep fit class that meets every Thursday morning. Other social events include fortnightly Coffee Mornings on a Tuesday, monthly Sunday Lunches, Skittles Evenings, Race Nights and Quiz Nights as well as organised coach trips to places of interest. Every Friday night is Club Night when you can enjoy a drink at the bar and catch up with other members. The bar opens at 7:30pm. We also hire out the clubhouse for private functions providing catering as well as the bar facility at competitive prices. As you can see we have a lot to offer. For more information please contact the Club Secretary, Trevor Durrant, on 01793 330564 or trevor.durrant1@ntlworld.com Hope to see you soon!
