In Memory of Gill Campbell January 2014

Gill studied at Swindon College of Art and Design and graduated in 2005 having completed a degree in Drawing for Fine Art Practice. Her work experiments with line and form, using sunlight on light sensitive materials (cyanotype prints), graphite, ink and water colour. In 2005 Gill joined Faringdon Art Society and before long was enthusiastically involved with society activities and notably it was Gill that introduced the very successful Drop-In art group which enabled her to share her love of art with other people and continued to develop her own skills. Business Update This is not the new Prime Minister, but it is the new President of the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce. Mark Blatch, the owner of the Cellar Bar in the Market Place, is looking forward to this new challenge, taking over from Paul Brame who is taking on the role of Secretary of the Chamber. Mark is a local lad, having grown up in Grove. He joined the RAF in 1980 and took part in tours in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan amongst other conflict areas. Mark moved to Faringdon in 2000 and soon felt part of the local community. Five years ago he reopened the “Cellar Bar”, which is one of the few bars in Faringdon still owned and managed by local people. Since joining the Chamber of Commerce, Mark has worked with the retail businesses in town and also the Town Team to progress the Faringdon Loyalty card scheme, helping to introduce the “reward” card and has also been instrumental in helping to develop the Saturday markets. Mark has also been part of the FollyFest committee and has great satisfaction working with the various organisations, noting the enthusiasm of our local community in supporting and developing our town. He is looking forward to harnessing this enthusiasm and seeking the resources to facilitate any ideas coming forward. Whether you are a one man business working part time from your spare room, a retailer, large employer or someone who uses a local business, if you have any questions or ideas, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mark. Faringdon Business Breakfast Club As spring beckoned the FBBC gathered at Sudbury House Hotel on 2 March to gain an insight into ‘Putting the ‘Social’ back into Social Media’. After the traditional 60 second slot we were given a very clear presentation from Mary Thomas about how to get the best out of Social Media. Like many others present it was, for me, a timely reminder for my conscience about what I should be doing. Mary carefully drew our attention to the principles of using Social Media to benefit our businesses and that of course is based on establishing good relationships. We were given a concise mini-guide to the do’s and don’ts of the main Social Media tools such as Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook and Google+. The talk was finished off with Mary’s top tips for gaining engagement, including the very clear message that talking to people is extremely important, especially as this re-enforces the need to be human with your clients and customers and not give them the impression that they are just an electronic address. Details of local events over the next few weeks are summarised below: 18th Mar Wantage Breakfast Club (La Fontana) 10th Apr Neil Sleight will be holding a workshop on voice recognition software. More info from neil@talkingtypist.co.uk Looking Ahead - Please note that due to the Easter Holiday the April meeting will be on the second Monday of the month 13th April 2015, at Sudbury House Hotel from 07.30 – 09.00 am. At this meeting Robert Bullard will talk about “Get your customers to click” with tips on copy writing that can be used on website's and other areas to get your business noticed.

Over the last few years there has been a growing debate about age statement versus non-age statement (NAS) whiskies. Most single malts are comprised of a number of casks vatted together and the norm has been that a malt is classified by the age of the youngest whisky included, so whilst the range of ages included in an expression may go from a 12 up to a 15 year old it still has to be labelled as a 12 year old. With NAS the need to have whiskies of a certain age in the vatting, is removed (other than being over 3 years old), giving distillers more flexibility when creating whiskies as their only constraint is to maintain a particular flavour profile if they have an ongoing expression. They can bottle a whisky when they feel it is ready purely based on taste and quality rather than a prejudged age qualification. NAS whiskies are often created by focusing on a certain characteristic or cask type that can promote the story behind the whisky and the reasons why it tastes as it does. Laphroaig Quarter Cask is a good example of this. In years gone by whisky would often have been transported by horse and would therefore be in much smaller casks. The extra wood contact this allowed would have softened and mellowed the whisky and by moving the whisky into a similar size cask for some of its maturation this style of whisky has been recreated and the result is a smoother, sweeter version of this normally rumbustious peated whisky. Aberlour A’bunadh is also based on an old style of whisky but in this case the modern version of the whisky is far stronger than is the norm for the rest of the range. It is the distillers recreation of how they think their whisky would have been in the 1800s and is a BIG whisky - rich, heavily sherried and varying in flavour from batch to batch, this fabulous whisky has a great army of followers. NAS is not limited to recreating old whisky styles but is used more and more for innovative new expressions and whilst many distillers continue to retain more conventional age statement whiskies alongside their NAS whiskies there are some, including Macallan and Bruichladdich, who are moving over to bottling the majority of their whiskies as NAS and this is where the greatest outcry has been heard as old favourites disappear. For years the distillers have been telling us that age defines a whisky in terms of smoothness, complexity etc and if NAS is to succeed then consumers will need to be given sufficient information and education to enable them to judge if these new style whiskies are worth their hard earned cash and (ultimately) it will then be their palate that will make the final decision. Do you race through a sparse breakfast and eat too much in the evening? Join the club. That’s the way it is for most of us with a busy lifestyle. We end up being tired, overweight and under nourished because of what we eat and the way we eat it.

Buy direct from your local manufacturer and save money

In Chinese medicine they say eat breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king and dinner like a pauper. There is good reason for this because in Chinese medicine we observe different organs working harder at different times of the day. The digestive system’s ‘time’ is from 7-11am. Try consuming most of your nutrients in the first part of the day. It sounds like a radical idea, but try it and see how you feel. Making this change means that your digestive system can break down food more effectively and take in the nutrients. A recent study published in the journal Obesity backs up this ancient wisdom. In a 12-week study it measured how 50 overweight women eating the same food with the same calorific value lost weight in different ways according to the timing of when they ate. The group that ate breakfast like an emperor and dinner like a pauper lost more than twice as much weight as the other group. Here are few top tips for eating well and feeling great:

·

Eat in a relaxed way and just focus on eating and not doing anything else, such as watching television. Never eat when stressed or angry. It is better to eat a treat and fully enjoy it, than it is to eat something healthy when feeling stressed.

·

Eat food like you are drinking and drink liquid like you are eating. By this I mean chew food really well until it turns to liquid, as this helps with the digestive process. When drinking almost chew the liquid, so that it warms up to body temperature.

·

Eat fresh whole food that is local, organic and seasonal. This brings the maximum nutrients, strengthens the immune system and avoids harmful preservatives, additives and hormones.

·

Eat cow’s milk for butter, sheep’s milk for cheese and goat’s milk for drinking. In these forms they are most easily digested.

The King & Queen Longcot Restaurant Awards 2014 Winner - Best Traditional Pub

Book Now Easter Sunday Lunch April 5th Booking is essential

Delicious Homemade Food - Lunches, Evening Meals, Sunday Roasts. Bright new B&B accommodation with great views.

T: 01793 784 348 W: www.longcotkingandqueen.com A warm welcome to all walkers, cyclists, children, dogs & horses

Over the last three years Sally and Mark have become well respected members of Longcot village and the surrounding areas. The King & Queen at Longcot won The Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards 2014 for Best Traditional Pub Of The Year. With refurbished rooms, boasting great views overlooking The White Horse Hill, they can accommodate tourists and passing B&B travellers, not forgetting the welcome given to walkers, cyclists, children, dogs and horses! Walking into the King & Queen the atmosphere is relaxed, and welcoming, just the place to sit down with a glass of wine or a pint and wind down from a hard day's work. It's a busy place, traditional wooden beams throughout the ceilings with hops and horsey memorabilia adorning the walls. The pub was pleasantly busy when we arrived with lots of laughing locals, a very nice crowd, giving a warm and friendly vibe to sit and enjoy your meal in. Sally showed us to our table, which had my name in chalk written on it, very funky, loved it, nice touch! You will need to book in advance for this treat! With a nice bottle of French Pinot Noir and fresh water on the table, we were able to look over menu. With seven starters to choose from there is something for everyone's taste. I chose the Tempura Battered King Prawns with Lime and Chilli Mayo, this was lightly battered, served with lemon and seasoned well. I enjoyed every mouth full, just the right amount. My dinner partner had the Smoked Salmon Terrine with Mixed Leaf salad, Dill Sauce and Toast. This was light, with a lovely dill sauce drizzled on it, a fine start to the evening meal. With a choice of ten main meals to choose from, I chose Bouillabaisse with Crusty Baguette and Aioli. For those of you who may not know, this is a traditional Provencal fish stew which originates from the port city of Marseille. Mark did a spectacular job with this dish, the aroma and flavour, being served with the warm crusty baguette, took me back to sitting next to the Loire, pure French bliss. I would highly recommend this dish. My partner chose the 10 oz Ribeye Steak with Chips, Green Salad and a choice of either Aioli or Tomato and Chorizo Sauce. He opted for the Chorizo sauce. The steak came perfectly cooked, he likes his meat well done the opposite to myself and he was thrilled with it, to the point of finding out which butchers Mark used, we may have guessed though, as he said Pat Thomas butchers Faringdon. Pete the owner is renowned around these parts for only the best cuts of meat, but all credit to Mark, he explained there is a perfect way to cook a steak, and he has this skill down to art. For dessert we had a choice of four sweets, all homemade, served with either ice cream or custard or the option of a cheese board. I opted for the Sticky Toffee & Ginger Pudding with Custard. It was light and fluffy rounding off my meal with just the right amount of sweetness I needed. It was great. Cleverly my partner chose the pudding of the year, he had the Rhubarb & Orange Crumble with butterscotch ice cream. The combination of Rhubarb & Orange you just have to taste, they complement each other perfectly. This is the pudding to try, absolutely delicious! The evening was a great success. Mark came over from the kitchen for a chat once he had finished and the service from Sally and her staff was faultless all evening. I would definitely recommend an evening out or lunch time meal at the King & Queen.

Bordeaux is one of the world’s most prestigious wine producing regions, based around the port city of Bordeaux, located on the Garonne River in the Gironde region in south western France. Bordeaux is synonymous with red wines, as fame and headlines put the spotlight on the prices that the red wines from the top Chateaus can command – the current record being £122,380 paid in Dubai for a limited edition 12 litre bottle of Chateau Margaux 2009! Before you decide to rush out and re mortgage for a taste of this wonder, pay some consideration to the fabulous wines that are produced in the region minus the whopping price tag. Interestingly, most of the wines from Bordeaux’s 7,000+ wineries are sold at very affordably modest prices. The bulk of these will be sold into the market as generic Bordeaux – often labelled Appellation Bordeaux Controllée. In value, more than 2 billion Euros of Bordeaux wine is produced each year equating to some 39 million cases of red Bordeaux and 4 million cases of white Bordeaux. White Bordeaux can be dry or sweet. Of this category, it is the sweet wines of Sauternes that steal the limelight. They are the result of the ‘noble rot’ (botrytis cinerea) that afflicts the area around the town of Sauternes most autumns. It attacks the grape berries (regional varieties of sauvignon blanc, semillon or muscadelle), removing them of their water content, leaving behind a berry with an increased percentage of sugars. This is ideal for making sweet wines, providing more complexity; spicy, nut and honeyed characters with tropical fruits; all balanced with a refreshing zest of acidity. Sauternes can be paired with a host of food selections; its sweetness stands up to spicy Asian dishes as well as rich terrines and a stunning match to cheese. Dry white Bordeaux wines are often made from sauvignon blanc and Semillon, although muscadelle and sauvignon gris can be used as well. When young, the wine shows floral characters with citrus, vanilla, lemon, grapefruit and lime. As it ages, it can show characteristics of honey, minerality, butterscotch and spice. Due to its fresh citrus profile, most seafood dishes pair well although it can hold its own with chicken, pork, sushi and spicy dishes. Chateau Mauras 2010 50cl £6.99 Lidl A rich medley of apricots, peach and pineapple with honey and lovely balanced acidity and freshness on the finish. Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc 2013 £5.49 Aldi Dry, refreshing citrus; grapefruit with melon and apple, finishing with a burst of lime zest. Idoleyes Beauty welcomed the iiaa Environ VISIA skin and complexion analysis machine into their salon this month. Clients were invited to book a 45 minute appointment to reveal damage and signs of ageing on and beneath the surface of the skin that is invisible to the human eye. This entails using multi-spectral imaging. Visia's computer imaging enables the practitioner to evaluate the health and appearance of the skin based on six criteria that affect your complexion: wrinkles, spots, pores, evenness (skin tone colour variation), porphyrins (evidence of bacteria in your pores), and UV spots caused by overexposure to the sun. VISIA gives you the opportunity to detect – and tackle – some of the aesthetic skin ageing symptoms before they become apparent. The results of having the Visia skin and complexion analysis enables the client to gain an understanding of what the real needs of their skin are. Advice can then be given as to how to improve and repair the skin. Idoleyes Beauty have arranged for further events for Visia skin analysis. If you would like to book an appointment call 07748 905 292.

Spring Ramblings!

| The Advertiser | page 13 |

With Spring officially here and the sunniest February on record, what weather will await us as the weeks unfold?! Grass will green-up and grazing land change when clover and other native plants start to re grow. On the most westerly farm in Wales, Lower Treginnis is an organic farm run by Farmer Rob Davies in partnership with Farms for City Children, a not for profit charity that enables children to stay on the farm for a week and safely interact with all forms of livestock, which includes feeding lambs, moving food about and even milking a goat or two. It’s a farmstead dating back to 1284, so will have already seen countless generations of children under its roofs. Donkeys, milking goats, 900 breeding sheep and a small herd of Dexter cattle are kept on the surrounding land. In addition the children help look after poultry, horses and herd of pigs. The award-winning buildings were converted and re-structured by Farms for City Children to provide for up to 40 children and their teachers. What an amazing opportunity for children with little or no formal, structured access to the countryside! Have a look: www.farmsforcitychildren.org/farms/treginnis-isaf/ With warmer weather upon us, it is also necessary to let anyone who uses patio/decking cleaners to PLEASE check first before purchase, that no matter how safe it is when the surfaces are DRY after application, the active chemical when actually applied WET is still safe for pets, particularly cats who groom so much more to clean themselves up, as well as safe for children. Some chemicals are dose related regarding poisoning. Antifreeze is toxic to cats whatever the volume groomed off feet or coat; it may have a sweet taste and there are moves to enforce a bittering agent additive, to reduce or prevent ingestion in the first place. I feel that I must briefly talk about e-cigarettes too. Both tobacco and nicotine replacement therapies, now including e-cigarettes, are an important and rising source of acute poisoning in people and pets. Serious as well as fatal cases of nicotine poisoning have been reported to our uniquely-British Veterinary Poisons Information Service, which my Practice, along with many others, pays a subscription fee to get access to unrivalled emergency treatment information 24/7. The flavoured e-juice of the e-liquid containing the nicotine produces an odour that attracts pets, who will bite into the e-cigarette or an e-refill left lying around. Nicotine is rapidly absorbed through the lining of the mouth and e-poisoning is acute – with NO actual antidote. This is a TRU-E veterinary E-MERGENCY. A current survey run by the BVA in the latest Voice of the Veterinary Profession shows that 4 vets in every 10 have seen cats with airgun injuries in 2014. Many of these cats were seriously injured, some fatally. Even more cruelty was found when 1 in 100 vets reported crossbow bolt injuries. There is a lot to do to educate those involved. Cats Protection launched its Manifesto for Cats in the House of Commons in February, which seeks, amongst many other measures, tighter regulation on the licensing of airguns. This coincides with the BVA’s General Election manifesto that calls for MPs to back better enforcement of animal welfare legislation. The BTb debate still rolls on, with so much political stalemate while cattle continue to be taken from established herds with suspected BTb, to be slaughtered. Heavily pregnant cattle are sometimes allowed to calve before being taken away from their calves and slaughtered. Is there any end in sight to stop this relentless cycle of re-infection between wildlife and farm stock? One more, “final”, notice that the Dogs Trust free-of-charge micro-chipping scheme that we, along with many other practices, have been prepared to absorb the balance of the true cost, will END this month in April. Please remember that all dogs MUST be micro-chipped by a trained, approved person from 6th April 2016. Wales and Scotland will also come online simultaneously with England and N. Ireland on that date. So, all that space allows me to say is thank you for reading this call for action through to the end, wishing you a peaceful Easter and I’ll see you next month.

Lord Berners Abroad For about 300 years, upper class young Englishmen would have undertaken a Grand Tour of Europe, in the company of a chaperone. When Gerald Tyrwhitt, later to become the 14th Baron Berners, left school, the era of the Grand Tour was over; rail travel and steamships had made the Continent of Europe a more accessible destination. Here was a young man who needed a career and for whom the diplomatic service was considered a good option. Foreign languages were a requisite, so Gerald was sent abroad in 1900 to Normandy in France. His family knew of the widowed daughter of an impoverished aristocrat who took in paying guests at her château, Résenlieu, near Gacé (not very far from Faringdon's present-day twin town, Le Mêle sur Sarthe). Gerald loved everything there: the food, the pace of life, the countryside. “An extraordinary feeling of well-being came upon me, such as I did not remember experiencing since the early days of my childhood . . . The air I breathed seemed full of liberty and lightness.” His book, ‘The Château de Résenlieu’ is delightful, written in a very easy, readable style (unlike his later novels). It is full of the contentment he felt and the pleasures experienced, both in Normandy and, for a short time, in Paris. A second book, simply called ‘Dresden’, recalls the tales of his next linguistic challenge, to learn German. In early 1901, directly after his stay in France, he was dispatched to a crammer (a fast-track approach to learning) in Dresden. This was a very different experience where everything felt strange to him: life, people, music (mainly Wagner). This was made even more difficult by his having no prior knowledge of German. Gerald stayed at Frau Eberhardt's pension - “a rather shabby looking stucco house”. Here he was in the company of other young Englishmen, also learning German. His first impressions of the city were depressing. “There was not a single building that gave me any pleasure to look at, and the inhabitants were on a par with the architecture”. However, his spirits were lifted later when he was able to leave Dresden and visit first the Harz mountains, then the beautiful town of Weimar. ‘Dresden’ has descriptions full of detail and humour. It is a light-hearted account of a young man's travels, which embraces life in Germany before WW1. Each a slim volume, these two autobiographical books are sequels to ‘First Childhood’ and ‘A Distant Prospect’, which have been recently reviewed. Carolyn Williams, U3A Faringdon Appreciation of Berners’ Group These two books are published by Turtle Point Press and Helen Marx Books and are currently in print and also available at Faringdon Library.

IT’S SOCIABLE, FUN AND REWARDING Ferndale Community Choir. New term starts Wednesday 22nd April We'll be starting some new songs, so it's a good time to join in. The choir is run by Louise Woodgate who has years of experience as a professional singer and singing teacher. Her great passion for music makes the evening really go with a swing. You don't need to read music and you don't need previous experience. We sing a wide variety of songs from different genres and varying levels of difficulty. We simply meet to enjoy singing together. It is a very sociable, fun and rewarding evening. Come along Wednesday evenings 7pm - 8.30pm, during term time in the School Hall at Ferndale School, 5 - 7 Bromsgrove, Faringdon, SN7 7JF £2.50 per session If you want to know more phone 01367 242222, or just turn up, we'll be so pleased to see you

Spring Lamb Rump

It's extraordinary how a little sunshine makes people so chipper! The difference is really notable and of course, I feel that uplifting feeling too. I love that early spring warmth. Often March is really warm, giving rise to shedding the jumper in favour of a T-shirt or some such. And then the late afternoon light is like no other holding the promise of what is to come in later months. Perfect for digging, walking and drinking something delicious. And it's interesting how food tastes change with the seasons. Just ponder that fact for a moment. We all know that we eat salad in the summer. Light fresh flavours, to cope with the heat. Then autumn and winter bring comfort and weight in our food to fight the cold and dampness.

BATHROOM SHOWROOM Open to the Public & Trade

Easter, along with springtime, bring thoughts of lamb and green crisp vegetables and soft fragrant herbs. There is so much you can do with these ingredients. Flavourful salsa verde served with grilled lamb. Just whizz any mix of soft herbs like parsley, chervil, tarragon, mint with capers and olive oil. Or a risotto with colourful and sweet peas and broad beans. Spring vegetable soup laced with lemon or indeed how about this. First, Pop along to Pat Thomas and choose yourself a little lamb rump. Then take it home and make a delicious sauce around it.

To serve 4, Peel and chop an onion and soften in a good lump of butter. Add a crushed clove of garlic too and cook over a low to medium heat until tender and smelling gorgeous. Turn up the heat a smidgen. Place the meat into the pan, pushing the onions aside as you lay it in. Cook for a few minutes on each side then splash in a glass of white wine. Bubble for a few minutes turning the lamb once. Remove the lamb from the pan and set aside then add 250ml double cream and around 20 finely chopped mint leaves. Season with sea salt and black pepper then bubble vigorously until the sauce is thickened and tasty. Add the lamb back to the pan and simmer for a minute or so. Serve with some crushed new potatoes and a green vegetable of some sort Lesley Holdship Hare in the Woods 07754 086316 facebook.com/hareinthewoods Twitter @hareinthewoods 11 London St Faringdon SN7 7AE

Healthy Tips

| The Advertiser | page 18 |

How Change Your Body Composition Through Nutrition To change your body composition through nutrition, the first thing you need to do is find a balance between your nutritional plans and exercise regime. Controlling your calorie intake and finding the correct foods to eat should be your main focus when making improvements to any healthy lifestyle plan. We must always remember that exercise should be part of your long term body composition strategy too (that will be covered in a future article). Just be aware that it is not possible to “out train” a poor diet, so even if you are exercising it does not mean you can eat whatever you want. Calories are in essence your body’s fuel source, and like any fuel source, quality counts! It is not just about calories consumed vs. calories burned - the quality and source of the calories have an important role to play. Calories consumed by eating sugary fast food have a very different effect on your body than eating the same amount of calories from lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables. That is why we need to consider what foods we eat at every meal. View each meal or snack as an opportunity to improve your body! Eat a better breakfast – the most important meal of the day but often overlooked! A balanced breakfast regulates blood sugar, energy balance and controls cravings later in the day that can lead to over eating. Every day your breakfast should contain protein, healthy fats and vegetables. Never miss your breakfast. Why not try an omelette? Improve your lunch. Ditch the sandwich. Make yourself a good, solid meal, complete with lean protein, healthy fats and vegetables. Chicken salad is easy. Have a light evening meal. This is a good opportunity to eat delicious, healthy food that might take a little more time to prepare. This is also a great time to plan your food for the following day. Evening calories should not exceed lunch or breakfast calories. Eat at least two-thirds of your day's calories before dinner. It's important to go to bed feeling light, not full. This way, you will have an appetite for breakfast. Add healthy fats to your meals. Add extra-virgin olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil to your meals. Try supplementing with quality fish oils too. Eat more fruit and vegetables. You probably do not eat enough of these! Eating more fruit and vegetables can lead to improvements to your health, daily performance and body composition. Eat only healthy snacks between your main three meals. Any snacks must contain quality protein, healthy fats, vegetables and fruits. Why not make your own healthy snack bars. It will stop you craving naughty foods that are low in nutritional value. You will lose the most fat and improve your body composition by eating a diet that supports muscle building, prevents nutrient deficiencies and helps you achieve the best hormone response for your body. Go on - make those changes and watch your body shape change! Richard Marfell – wellness coach 07800636004 richard@studio-one2one.co.uk

Mad March Hares (and tortoises)! March signalled the start of race season for the Far Runners. First was the Bath Half marathon on 2 March. This flat(ish!) course gave us some personal bests and again some first-timers were among our number: Lisa Redman (raising money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance http://bit.ly/1HpwZlG) and Sam Bailey (supporting CLIC Sargent http://bit.ly/1aYf5vQ). Next is the White Horse Half Marathon on 29 March, starting from Grove and taking in some beautiful local countryside, a fantastic showing of nearly twenty Far Runners in a field of only five hundred. Voted a top 10 course for personal bests by Runners’ World, so we’re hoping for some cracking times. But for some Far Runners, a half marathon isn’t quite far enough! We’re very proud to have Austen Roberts running the London Marathon on 26 April. Here is Austen’s story…. I have a life-limiting condition. One side-effect of this is my seizures, when it happens I have no control. One day whilst out running I collapsed, not due to running, thankfully I was on a hill where some children were camping. I awoke to find my head supported and a duvet over me. They did not panic, they did everything correctly. INJURY MINIMIZATION PROGRAM for SCHOOLS (IMPS www.impsweb.co.uk) specializes in teaching our children how to avoid accidents at home, school and on the road. They teach children many things and equip them with the skills to cope in an emergency. But sometimes, the cost of coach travel to hospital is the only reason children cannot attend training – the school cannot afford it. By supporting my efforts, together we can allow our children/grandchildren to get the valuable training that may one day save a life – be it theirs, or someone else's. My training is going well – I’m up to around 18 miles on my long weekend run. But a marathon is life-consuming. It impacts work, family and social life; hours at the gym and pounding the streets can be quite lonely; I long for summer, for warmth, for a lie in! Motivation is a key factor – it helps me believe that I can do it. If you want to help motivate me, come along and watch; train with me or donate. I will not quit and I will complete it. Best of luck to Austen and if you want to motivate him, please visit his fundraising website http://bit.ly/1Ew2yMp or text: DGCM62 £x to 70070 max £10/text. Find out how Austen got on in a future column.

www.lisamoore-photography.com lmoore965@btinternet.com

Whether you want to run a marathon or jog a 5k please join is at the Old Town Hall at 6:30pm on a Tuesday and 7pm on a Thursday. We also meet at the Leisure Centre at 9:30am on Sundays.
