Paul James Has an unusual approach to his landscape and animal paintings which makes them all the more immediate and arresting. His ‘Urban collection’ is inspired from the inner city waterways of the UK where he first witnessed ducks and geese amidst the detritus and graffiti written walls of the canal tow paths. Paul lived and travelled on his narrow boat and worked from his on-board studio for several years. His creative skills are also expressed in music being an accomplished, versatile pianist and composer. WHO’S NEXT?

Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club Club Chairman Paul Brame, kicked off proceedings and welcomed three new members on the 3rd March. Each delegate in turn introduced their business and the kind of opportunities they’re looking for. Notable contributions included: Mary Thomas of Concise Training has just published a book on WORD 2013 which takes the reader through tab by tab. Available as a free download or ebook from bookboon.com. IT specialist Raoul Van Eindhoven told us the good news that Microsoft offer a subscription option for licences which can mean a big saving for a small business. This month’s Guest Speaker was Jackie Fitzgerald of Alchemy Business Coaching, who gave us her tips on ‘How to think like a successful business owner’. In this thought-provoking talk Jackie drew on her experience of working with hundreds of small businesses across the Thames Valley. We all recognised her opening assessment: owners get bogged down in stuff and forget to enjoy their lives! Despite calling her business Alchemy, success is not a mystery! She turned round the standard soul-searching question to ask, ‘what do businesses do right?’ There are plenty of examples of good practice out there, and many are quite simple to adopt. Jackie identified 31 practical tips! Top of the list was KISS – Keep It Simple (Stupid). Don’t try to do everything. And help to focus your efforts by drawing up a simple mission statement with clear but audacious goals! Her tips spanned the gamut from management, staff and team work, to marketing, sales and profits. Avoid the pitfalls by planning ahead, tracking performance and cashflow, communication, and training. Don’t be afraid to let go: outsource where necessary, delegate, and ask for help (e.g. from a networking group) – it saves time and money in the long run. Believe in yourself, because if you don’t, how can staff or clients? And don’t forget to make time to have a life! FBBC’s next meeting will be on Monday 7th April when each delegate will have the chance to talk one-to-one with three others of their choice. It’s a great way to pick one another’s brains and to promote your business locally. There is no membership fee and no restrictions on which businesses can attend. More information can be found on the Club’s website: http://www.fbbc-networking.co.uk

Business Update There was plenty of food for thought at the Faringdon Chamber of Commerce AGM on 10th March – as all attendees were treated to delicious canapés from the kitchen of award winning chef, Andrew Scott of Restaurant 56. We also heard from Ulrike Le Roux, the hotel’s general manager, about the exciting plans to refresh the modern parts of the hotel which had just received planning permission. The officers of the Chamber were all re-elected for another year and the committee was expanded with the addition of three new members; Mark Blatch, Karl Booth and Patrick Sharkey. Mark represents the “The Cellar Bar” and Karl is known to many as the proprietor of the “Faringdon Motorist Centre” and is currently planning to open a new hardware store in the town centre. Patrick Sharkey, has been heavily involved in the moulding of the town’s Neighbourhood Plan. As is customary at the AGM, the President and Treasurer both presented their reports for the past year. Sarah Allen-Stevens, continuing as treasurer, reported that membership had increased over the last twelve months and that the Chamber had held the most successful fundraising event in its history, the Charity Ball, which raised over £3,300 for local charities. Paul Brame, who stays on as President, also delivered his report of activities and plans to further increase engagement by a series of social and networking events and increased use of social media. Other objectives were to refresh connections with Faringdon Community College and other neighbouring chambers and business clubs. The Chamber also voted to formally adopt a new logo, produced by Chamber Member, Alun Williams (see attached). Our next meeting will be on Monday 14th April at Davenport’s Business Centre at 6:30pm. Please come and join us.

We’re taking a break from our tour of the Scottish islands to turn to the subject of blended whisky. The reason for this is that we recently ran a Chivas Regal Art of Blending Event, presented by the extremely knowledgeable Phil Huckle. Phil gave us all an evening to remember and reiterated the message that, in the case of blended whisky, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Blends combine the smoothness of grain whisky and the flavour of malt whisky, and the passing of the Spirits Act in 1860 that allowed this blending to happen in bond (so no duty had to be paid before the whisky was bottled), along with the Phylloxera blight that devastated French vineyards and thus halted the import of brandy to the UK, accelerated the rise of these whiskies and now far more of them are sold worldwide than single malts. The skilled master blenders are looking for a seamless integration of the malt and the grain and the Chivas Regal event gave those present a chance to have a go at this for themselves. As Phil explained, the grain whisky element is extremely important because as well as bringing smoothness to the blend it also harmonises the varying amounts of different single malts that range from sweet and fruity through rich and spicy to powerfully peaty. These define the final character of the blend but, strangely, because of the magic transformation that happens in the blending process then although you may not normally choose to drink, for example, a smoky malt most blends need at least a small amount of it to provide a ‘lift’ to the finished whisky. The single malts that go in to Chivas Regal are excellent whiskies in their own right but the value they have for blenders in terms of flavour means that you may not often get to taste them. At the heart of the blend is the delightful Strathisla, a rich, fruity, complex and full bodied whisky with notes of stewed fruits, barley, toffee, honey and a little smoke. Another malt used is one of the blender’s all time favourites – Longmorn, a joyous riot of fruit, fudge, butter and spice. At the end of the evening as well as tasting the two single malts above we also tried the Chivas 12 and 18 year old whiskies. With a greater understanding of what blending involves and a lot of preconceptions swept away, these blends were approached with the respect they deserve and the 18 year old with its dried fruit, chocolate, smoke and spice flavours was a particular favourite for many of those present. So next time you’re buying a bottle of whisky remember the skill that goes into producing blended whiskies and give one a try!

Big Paw Dog Care Ltd, based in Faringdon, specialise in providing excellent dog walking services, with dogs running and socialising off the lead in a pack of between three and six dogs at a time. Dogs of all breeds are welcome, though the vast majority of clients' dogs are gun dogs. Each run lasts for at least one hour and each dog wears a small GPS device meaning that should a dog catch a scent and run off, their position can be tracked in real time. Additional services include day care (which includes two walking sessions per day) and home boarding, with dogs spending their stay as part of a family rather than in kennels. Home boarding is only available for regular walking or day care clients. Tim Clifford, Managing Director of Big Paw Dog Care Ltd, invites dog owners and lovers to take a look at their website at www.bigpawdogcare.co.uk to find out more about what they offer, and their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bigpawdogcare where videos and pictures from runs are regularly uploaded. They can also be contacted on 01367 30 20 12. In addition to GPS tracking equipment, the company is proud to have also invested in a specialist camera so clients can see the dogs playing from their dog's point of view. A Home Front Diary 1914-1918 by Lillie Scales 'A Home Front Diary 1914-1918' is a fascinating account of WWI, compiled from the diaries of Lillie Scales, recently found by her great-nephew Peter Scales. The history of the conflict at the various Fronts in Europe, Africa and Asia is well-documented and well known, but this book provides a valuable insight into the lives of those who remained behind, and their ceaseless contributions to the war effort. It is particularly interesting to read about the war from a woman's perspective, and to learn more of women's involvement during that time. Lillie was living in North London during the war with her husband, whose age and ill-health meant that he was not a candidate for the army. One of her many efforts to provide what aid she could to the Allied forces, was to provide food and lodging to many soldiers while they were on leave, or recovering from injury. The majority who lodged with her were ANZAC soldiers, given the vast distance between them and their families. The number of them who returned several times, and those who kept up correspondence with her, is a testament to Lillie's nurturing and supportive personality, which shines through her writing. She writes often of the courage of others, but she herself demonstrates great courage and compassion. Her account never lapses into melodrama, and is always optimistic, even when she is beset by personal tragedy. She is a shining example of everyday heroism – though she herself would probably have seen it as only doing her duty, and as providing simple human kindness. There were many aspects of home front life during the war that I had not been aware of before reading these diaries, most notably the extent of the Zeppelin bombings across Britain. We are all aware of the Blitz during WWII, but I had not realised that there was also an intense bombing campaign during WWI as well. Lillie recounts many occasions when there was an air raid, and the devastation caused by the bombs. It was also very interesting to read about the rationing during the war and the hardship endured to make ends meet. Again, I had not realised that it was voluntary for the early years of conflict. Her indignation at the inflated prices of goods and travel is very emphatic! Her diary also provides a compelling mirror of the accounts her soldier lodgers give her of trench warfare. She records their stories of the chaos caused by poor leadership and bad organisation. This is reflected by her relaying several incidences of governmental interference in business which cause great financial losses due to an unwillingness to listen to expert advice. By an astonishing coincidence, Lillie's wonderful diary had a very personal impact on me. To my great surprise, I discovered when reading it that she lived in the same road where I grew up! The places she describes, the devastation, the hope, the camaraderie, is all against the backdrop of places at once familiar and strange. One of the most poignant sentences in her diary, which stood out and has stayed with me is this: “One knows that our successes are brought at a terrible price, and we long for peace, but it must be a peace that will ensure peace to our children.” Sophia Matthew On the centenary of the commencement of WWI, this is still today a fervent wish we all share.

In the past, Riesling has suffered a bad rap due to the likes of ‘Blue Nun’ (which, I challenge you to identify in a tasting where glasses are unidentified of course!) and the bad press surrounding the 1985 German antifreeze scandal. Slowly but surely, (and correctly), attitudes are changing and a renewed interest in this noble grape is emerging. Riesling is a white grape variety, possibly originating in the Rhine region of Germany, where evidence of its presence was recorded in 1435. It is very aromatic; can have quite an intense perfume of roses, along with citrus, green apple, petrol/kerosene, mineral and spice and more…. It shows a deep connection to where it is grown; expressing various fruit characteristics that are only obtained from a particular region (e.g. the highly perfumed Riesling obtained from the clay soils of Alsace, France vs the minerality of the slate soils of the Rheingau). It is very versatile and can produce dry, off-dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Riesling is relatively low in alcohol and naturally high in acidity, where the latter and scope of flavour profile enables Riesling to age, some of the better quality examples rivaling the longevity of great Bordeaux clarets! The town hall of Bremen, where various German wines are stored, proudly has in barrel, Riesling dating back to 1653! However, as a general rule of thumb, ageing suggestions for good quality Rieslings would be 5-15 years for dry, 10-20 years for semisweet and 10-30+ for sweet wines (if you can resist that long??). Wines showing age often have a distinctive marmalade or waxy aroma and flavour profile. The sweet wines are created from ‘lengthy hang time’ or late harvest, where the grape berries are left to become raisined on the vine. Other methods include the evaporative effect of the fungus botrytis cinerea aka ‘noble rot’, or where the grape berries are frozen (Eiswein). This concentrates the grape berry sugars, giving the wines more richness, flavour and overall complexity. So, if you are inclined to branch out and try something new this spring, give Riesling a go! Plantagenet Riesling 2008 Mount Barker, Western Australia Pale straw in colour with green hues. Wonderfully evolved classic lime infused aroma with lemon rind and pear characters, enhanced by subtle spice and mineral tones. Citrus characters follow through to the palate. Wonderful juicy, crisp acid structure, leading on to great length with lemon, lime and pear elements lingering, finishing with a zest of grapefruit. Talk to the Vet!

Welcome to a new month, I hope the weather has improved and the water all around still has been able to drain away. As I write, Spring has definitely sprung, flowers are reflected in the garden puddles and road-side ditches. While water levels are starting to lower in affected areas and the water table in general, hidden dangers to pets and farm stock remain. There will be areas of the countryside affected by water contaminated by sewage, overflowed farm effluent and other waste, such as rotting crops. Although everyone will welcome the re-appearance of drier land, challenges for animal owners remain. Pets should be discouraged from drinking such contaminated water or even stagnant water, where bacteria including Leptospirosis could be present. Many animal charities, particularly the Dog’s Trust, and veterinary organisations like the BVA, have set in motion FREE micro-chipping throughout the country. IT IS NOW OPERATING for the WHOLE OF APRIL! Any veterinary practice signed up to the Dog’s Trust agreement will implant a micro-chip in ANY dog. This is to help drive compliance for the compulsory micro-chipping of all dogs in all parts of the UK by 2016. Planning a holiday across the Channel? Microchips are of course necessary for travelling pets; everyone’s now aware from their vet practice and from published articles including this column, that a Rabies vaccine is needed after micro-chipping, The UK Government insists, for public health reasons only, that all dogs re-entering the UK are treated for a very unpleasant-to-man tape-worm between 1 and 5 days before entering sovereign territory. As a practice, we believe that our strongest recommendation to protect the pet DOG against very serious pet diseases by using licensed collars or skin-applied liquids is echoed by many practices. The consequences of infection are long-term, very unpleasant for the dog and many potentially life-threatening or lead to chronic debilitating disease. Please ask you Practice for more advice as well as downloading the BVA-AWF leaflet. As a practice and thinking of parasites - Lungworm, Angiostrongylus spp, raises its profile as more information is collected about its incidence across the country. We will now be making it an optional extra as part of our pre-op and routine blood sampling tests. A simple test, a quick result and all positive results are being coordinated and collated by a big referral practice on the outskirts of Winchester for the benefit of veterinary practices and their canine patients. Positive cases are not referred, just continue treatment. On a MUCH lighter note, we are already welcoming the first of a 2014 string of potential veterinary students from local schools and from much further away. It is a real pleasure to foster this nascent interest in our profession and to prepare in even a small way, a student for life in the workplace and in university life and when qualified one day, what choice of animals to work with and what to expect. From day one, newly qualified vets in a new practice will have a specially-designed online and in-house mentoring process to help them settle into their new career with confidence and essential support from their peers. Learning never ever stops for any veterinary surgeon or nurse!! We are also one of many EMS practices, so that we can help with the gaining of experience for vet school students during the vital clinical years when they rotate through different types of veterinary practices. Like other local practices, we have also attained a type of veterinary nurse training practice status, thanks to a lot of hard work by individual members of staff, so that we can offer to train nurses, for us in collaboration with an external practice, and the overall mentorship of Hartpury College near Gloucester. Personally, may we thank all our clients for their support through invaluable custom, all this activity behind the scenes, which they may now be aware of is a result of reading this now. Don’t forget the free micro-chipping! One month ONLY, this month! Have a great April, good health to you all. If in doubt, always ask your veterinary surgeon’s or veterinary nurse’s advice. Thank you!

Weight training – will women bulk up from heavy weight training? One of the most important methods of training for improving the body is weight training and because of a lot of ‘false’ information portrayed by the media, women have been led to believe that heavy weight training will cause them to develop a bulky-looking body. A common misconception is that you shouldn’t be lifting weights if you want to slim down. As soon as weight lifting is mentioned, many women immediately picture a she-male bodybuilder. The truth is that the opposite occurs. In fact, there are many benefits to strength conditioning with weights. Although some may have aspired to lifting weights at one point or another, quite often they end up not following through, maybe because they are overwhelmed by the whole gym experience, strolling aimlessly through a maze of exercise machines. In most cases, when someone is new to a gym they are more likely to start by doing what they are confident doing. This usually means walking over to one of the treadmills, elliptical walkers or some other cardio machine, rather than daring to try anything else. Three common reasons why women in particular shy away from lifting weights: 1. They are afraid of getting too big and bulky 2. They only want to tone muscles, but not build muscles 3. They are afraid of being judged for lifting incorrectly and are intimidated by free weights Let’s tackle each concern separately: The fear of getting big and bulky Bulkiness is caused by having a large amount of body fat, not by having too much muscle. If a person doesn’t lift weights, they won’t have a lot of lean muscle mass. And if they don’t have a lot of lean muscle mass, then that bulk they are referring to is nothing more than fat tissue. Once they begin a weight lifting routine, they will see a great improvement in body composition while they are actually getting smaller through losing fat tissue. You have to work hard for years, training with heavy weights to build a considerable amount of muscle. Maintaining muscle mass requires a constant stressor and isn’t something the body permanently holds. Muscles will begin to atrophy as quickly as two weeks after discontinuing the workout routine. The conclusion is that lifting weights does not create a bulky, unfeminine body. In fact, it creates a leaner, more athletic, elegantlooking body. Muscle is far more compact than fat; so the more muscle you build, and the fat you lose, the smaller you actually become. And the more lean muscle tissue you acquire, the more calories you will burn 24/7. There is one simple reason why women are incapable of acquiring muscle mass anywhere close to the level that a male is capable of acquiring: the absence of the hormone testosterone. On average, men produce roughly 16 times more testosterone than women, and many research articles state levels greater than 25 times more! Recalling the fact that men produce more testosterone than females, you’d think men could easily develop as much muscle mass as they desired. Actually, there are very few men that are able to gain a significant amount of muscle mass without the use of anabolic steroids. If gaining muscle was so easy, there wouldn’t be a multi-billion dollar market for muscle-building products and regimes. Women do produce testosterone, but it’s in such small quantities that it is ridiculous to debate the natural ability of growing massive muscles in 99.9% of females. Even women who dedicate their entire lives to lifting weights don’t get large and bulky because their bodies don’t naturally produce enough testosterone. Have we talked about rhubarb yet? If not, i can't imagine why! Rhubarb is just drifting in to season. It's popping it's delicious heads up on our allotments and vegetable patches and it's just making an appearance in the shops. At Hare in the Woods, we have wonderful tender Yorkshire rhubarb. It's grown in the Yorkshire triangle, an area famous for delicious, early forced rhubarb. It thrives in the cold and wet Yorkshire environment due to the fact that it is originally from Siberia. Delicately pink, it heralds the time for cooking tart savouries and sweet tarts! Botanically a vegetable, rhubarb is actually marvellous in savoury dishes especially with oily meats like pork or mackerel. Saute the rhubarb in a little butter then serve with roast pork or pan fried mackerel. Or stuff some poussin cavities with the raw rhubarb coated with sugar and a little grated fish ginger. I often think that rhubarb is over cooked when it gets stewed in a pan and so in this light I always bake it in the oven. Cut into 3-4 cm lengths and sit it into an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with copious amounts of soft brown sugar and add some orange zest or chopped stem ginger. Cover and bake for 15 minutes. But I love folding rhubarb in to rich, thick cream. The two marry so well together. So I think a little rhubarb fool may be the order of the day.

To serve 4-6, cook around 600g rhubarb until just soft. Either as above or stewed, whichever you prefer. Cool completely. Whip a really generous 600ml double cream until it is voluminous and holds it's shape. Fold in 200g custard then lastly the cold rhubarb. Leave it a little marbled which gives a lovely texture and coloration. Serve with chunks of shortbread and a nice big spoon!

REAL SLICE OF AMERICANA COMES TO OXFORDSHIRE An authentic taste of America is about land on our doorsteps soon. Taking inspiration from the fun and fearlessness of the 1950's, when food ruled and cars were all the rage, Chariots and Cherry Pie will combine a gourmet dining experience with a deluxe personalized car wash service. It’s the only place outside America where you can get your wheels shined, while you dine and unwind over a gourmet diner meal. The first Cherry Pie Diner will open its doors to customers at Buckland in June 2014. Customers can enjoy a delicious all day breakfast including sweet waffles, pancakes, steak and eggs and breakfast skillets. The lunch and dinner menu features a mouth-watering array of burgers and hot dogs alongside regional and State specialities such as the Boston Butt Hoagie and Beef Po Boy. The 70-seat diner will also be serving up an appetizing range of American desserts including classic cherry, apple or pecan pies and traditional ice cream sundaes, shakes, malts and ice cream soda floats. While you enjoy a coffee or meal the experts at Chariots Car Spa will bring your car back to a showroom shine. The car wash team will offer everything from a 12 minute exterior clean to a full interior and exterior valet service. Chariots and Cherry Pie will be running a loyalty card scheme and a host of weekly special offers including half price drinks and baked goods in Happy Homework Hours on week day afternoons, and a free newspaper and 10% discount on breakfast and car wash for Saturday Super Dads. Chariots and Cherry Pie is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Claire and Jonathan Hilsdon who both gave up stakes in successful businesses to set up the new joint venture. Claire comments; “We recently visited the States and were totally blown away by the quality of service and simple good home cooked food we enjoyed on our travels. We wanted to bring a taste of the American dining dream back home to the UK.” Jonathan comments; “The restaurant team have worked hard to source the best quality local produce and blended this with some of our favourite tastes of America to give a real Diner experience. We’re really proud of our diverse, high quality menu.” A second Chariots and Cherry Pie is due to open in Grove in Autumn 2014. It will feature a diner and car spa followed by a boutique Cherry Pie Motel in 2015. The good news for local residents is we won’t have to wait until June to get a taste of the Chariots and Cherry Pie experience. From March through May the Cherry Pie Mobile Diner will be on site offering a taster Diner menu before hitting the roads in June and appearing all over the country at some of the biggest and best summer events. The trailer will also be available for private hire for weddings, parties and corporate events. The team is happy to customize the menu to suit individual tastes, dietary requirements and themes. With its gourmet menu, impeccable service and attention to detail, Chariots and Cherry Pie looks set to become everyone’s favourite destination diner experience for miles around.

Chickens @ Seven Acres Nurseries WE SUPPLY: CHICKENS, RABBITS, DUCKS ANIMAL FEED & FEEDERS BEDDING & HOUSING GARDEN PLANTS, SEEDS COMPOST & ACCESSORIES ANIMAL FEEDING AND PETTING AVAILABLE COFFEE SHOP

Energetic Earthworms We have been out late watching a one of our lovely earthworm species, the Common Earthworm Lumbricus terrestris the last couple of nights, take part here at www.opalexplorenature.org/soilsurvey . It has been just right for them. Over cast with damp conditions, these are the biggest of our earthworm species in the UK, and they have been coming up to the surface to mate. You will see them lying alongside each other with what looks like a large band around part of their body. This is called a clitellum. They lie alongside one another and pass sperm to each other from their reproductive organs near their head. After fertilization, the clitellum secretes a kind of tube that rolls off the worm carrying the eggs and is deposited in the soil as a cocoon. The cocoon will protect the eggs until they hatch and can contain two to fifteen baby worms. Each adult worm can do this up to three times a week. Be quiet and walk gently, these creatures are sensitive and will zoom back in their burrows at top speed if they feel threatened. Remember too that its earthworms that keep our soils healthy with nutrients from their faeces and by the allowing air as well as water to travel through their burrows. One of my favourite Charles Darwin quotes is even devoted to earthworms written in 1881 “It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important part in the history of the world as have these lowly organized creatures” Just about sums it up really. Should Home Spring Cleaning start with Insurance? Well, why not? You have to start somewhere. Over the last

year a number of our clients have been caught out. Some would blame it on the small print of the policy whilst others would say those clients should take more care and pay more attention to detail!

Does your insurance provide legal advice or expenses cover that would help you if you have been unfairly dismissed from work; or your neighbour from hell has a 200ft tall tree leaning precariously toward your home?

One of the great things about “On Line” quote engines is Losses away from the home. that you can get a really cheap quote quite quickly. But does A suitcase left in your car is not insured unless you ask for it to it give you what you want? Is it value for money or is it just be insured! cheap?

Accidental Damage. Here are a few things to look out for.

Do please make sure your Home Insurance includes Accidental Damage before you inadvertently paint the carpet Do you (or anyone in your family) work from home? or alter the state of the family heirloom from solid state to If so, your insurance could well be invalidated unless you jigsaw state! have your insurers written expressed permission.
