WHO’S NEXT?
Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club We held our July meeting in The Crown and despite the EU referendum we were well supported by members and first time attendees. We welcomed Donna Rogers from Den Boer wines on her first visit and it was good to see Sarah Allen-Stevens from Wicklesham Properties. Our guest speaker was David Burrows who is a manager with ‘Invest in Oxfordshire’. David gave us a very interesting insight into the new structure of what many will know as the Local Enterprise Partnership, and how that has evolved. David explained that it was his role to attract investment into Oxfordshire especially from overseas sources. His slides were very informative and much in demand from the audience. We had a lively 60 second round exploring the wide spectrum of businesses represented at the meeting with a notable ‘alphabet’ offering from our local bard as well as opportunities to obtain unusual mortgages through Newbury Building Society. Our staunch referendum campaigner had an irrepressible smile on their face despite being heard to say “right result, wrong reason”. Our next meeting will again be held in The Crown on Monday 1st August and we would welcome as many readers as possible to come along, especially as we our joining forces with Wantage Business Breakfast Club as part of our ‘networking with neighbours’ programme. So book your place by going to our website – www.faringdonnetworking.co.uk. The ‘Book Now’ button will take you to the booking page for 1 August.
Business Update
July saw Faringdon host its first "Business Expo". This event was organised by Julie Farmer and supported by Faringdon Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce. There were free seminars in the Old Town Hall from a variety of speakers including the Vale of White Horse District Council who gave an update on their involvement in future economic development of towns such as Faringdon. Meanwhile, in the Corn Exchange, a number of local businesses were present and all received positive interest from those who attended the event. I look forward to this becoming a regular event in Faringdon's calendar. It is events like this, and the more established community festivals "Live at the Park" and "FollyFest", which are made possible by the generous support of local businesses and the tenacity of their dedicated organisers. The Faringdon Businesses facebook group met with the Chamber of Commerce last month to discuss its involvement in future economic matters within the town. This group intends to formalise and we look forward their contributions, working with the Chamber in promoting and shaping Faringdon's economic future. The Oxfordshire High Street Conference was held in Bicester last month and attended by the Chamber of Commerce and our Town Team coordinator. A number of very interesting presentations raised directional guidance on how market towns like Faringdon can improve their vitality and visibility. We will be working with the town team to start implementing some of these in the near future. A project that the Chamber and the town team are already looking into is the production of an updated "welcome pack" for new and potential new arrivals to the area. This could be expanded as a comprehensive update for existing residents to inform and remind them of what is available in their area. If you have any suggestions as to what should be included in these packs then please contact president@faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk with your ideas.

REGENT CINEMA Weds 3 August : Summer Holiday (U) (Comedy, Musical - 1963) A fabulous 60s Musical. This was the first feature-length film for successful British director Peter Yates and it was also a winner, in part, because its star Cliff Richard was Britain's hottest rock 'n roll property in the early '60s. The title song climbed to No. 1 in the charts in Britain. The tale centres around Don (Richard) and his two friends as they take off in a double-decker London bus to travel around Europe and see the sights. Along the way from France to Greece they manage to give rides to a variety of interesting people -- especially a few young women. (Film duration 1 hr 47 mins)
For peace of mind… Friday 26th August : Florence Foster Jenkins (PG) (Biography, Comedy, Drama - 2016) A drama, based on real events, about a New York heiress and patron of the arts who dreams of becoming an opera singer despite having a poor singing voice. Matinee Club @ The Regent Cinema, The Corn Exchange, Faringdon. Doors open 12.30pm, film starts at 1pm. £4 Single Entry. £24 Annual Membership (min. 12 films). Free tea/coffee. 0 0 0 1 Glenrothes Distillery nestles up a narrow lane and astride the River Spey, with the cooperage and warehouses on one bank and the production area on the other. Not now open to the public, I was fortunate enough to have a tour with my guide Eric, who let me freely photograph everywhere apart from the Still Room, where I might cause an explosion! Glenrothes has had numerous fires in it’s history and not wishing to be part of distilling history, well not in that way, I didn’t hesitate in complying! The 10 stills produce millions of litres of spirit a year which is matured in warehouses on site, mostly in ex-Sherry cask with a small amount in ex-Bourbon casks. The casks are maintained in the distilleries own cooperage, something few distilleries have these days so it was a pleasant surprise to see this one. Glenrothes produce whisky for both blending and single malts, with the blends including Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse. These blends are a combination of grain whisky (not produced here) and malt whisky. At one time Glenrothes was the spiritual home (excuse the pun) of Cutty Sark but its visitor centre is now closed. A considerable amount of the spirit produced is bottled as single malt and I was fortunate to have a tasting of this wonderful whisky running through several vintages. Light, fruity with a hint of spice with greater depth as they age, simply stunning. Unusually, since 1993 a vintage has been stated on the label (whereas other distilleries use an age statement) and the ones we stock go back to 1971 plus there is an un-aged Vintage Reserve. Time to fire up my salt encrusted Clio for the night in Inverness before going on next morning to visit the old Millburn Distillery now converted into a hotel – now why didn’t I stay there the night? The distillery closed in 1985 and produced a delightful malty dram which is ever harder to obtain. Venturing further north I dropped into Dalmore Distillery, a delightful spot beside the Cromarty Firth. The visitor centre is one of the most welcoming in Scotland and the tour is excellent, of particular note being the unusual stills. The whiskies are of the highest quality with packaging to match and the range includes 12, 15, 18, and 25 year old versions, with a richness that comes from the element of ex-sherry casks used for maturation. The no age statement King Alexander is extraordinary, and there’s a whisky for cigar smokers too! Special Release Vintages can retail for six figure sums. How to get the best out of your Dalmore? Follow Master Blender Richard Paterson’s advice, to approach whisky in the same way as you greet a friend – ‘’hello, pleased to meet you’’ as his nose enters the glass for the first time, ‘’how are you’’? as his million pound insured nose enters the glass for the second time, and so on.

MORE BIG BRANDS TO OPEN FOR BUSINESS IN FARINGDON A new era in the long and illustrious history of Faringdon began on Friday 15th July, when local MP, Rt. Hon. Ed Vaizey, who was recently appointed to the Privy Council, officially named the Oxfordshire market town’s new retail centre, FARINGDON PARK. Based on the A420, on the junction with Park Road, COSTA COFFEE will be the first of three new operations to open their doors in the next six months. Louise Morgan, Senior Acquisitions Manager for Costa Coffee commented: “We are pleased to announce that we are opening a brand new drive-thru store within the Faringdon Park retail development in 2017. As well as providing our coffee loving on-the-go customers with a quality cup of coffee whilst on the move, we are also going to be creating 8-10 new jobs. We are looking forward to being a part of the local community, getting involved with events, providing the store as a meeting place and helping with fundraising.” Award winning supermarket ALDI is due to open in Spring 2017 and will offer local residents increased choice for their food shopping in Faringdon. Typically, Aldi customers save between 30 and 40 percent on their usual food shop without compromising on quality. With parking for up to 180 cars on site, Royal Warrant holder, WAITROSE, the grocery brand of the John Lewis Partnership, will also be opening a new store in the Spring. A Waitrose spokesperson said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming customers to our new shop and becoming part of the local community. As well as bringing our quality food and drink and fantastic service to Faringdon, our cafe will be a great place to relax.” Faringdon Park, which is being built by Britannia Construction, for Aviva Investors, will be the first location in the UK to accommodate a Waitrose and Aldi next to each other as part of a new purpose built development, creating over 125 full and part time jobs. Welcoming shoppers to the historic Oxfordshire town is by no means a new experience as Faringdon was first granted a Warrant to hold a market in 1218. The arrival of Aldi and Waitrose to the town continues a near 800-year-old unbroken history of providing a central location for the villages in the Vale of The White Horse to buy their weekly groceries. The Fairtrade town, which has a population of over 7,000, has a wide range of successful independent retailers and a regular weekly market selling local produce together with other markets run by volunteer groups such as the local WI. Rt. Hon. Ed Vaizey MP commented: “I am so delighted to see Faringdon and the entrepreneurial spirit of its inhabitants coming together to drive commerce, increase employment, spread prosperity, and announce to the world that Faringdon is open for business.” Faringdon’s Town Mayor, Dr Mike Wise, added: “The development of the site will provide £60,000 of contributions towards Faringdon’s infrastructure. These contributions have been successfully negotiated by Faringdon Town Council and will be used to help develop links with the town centre, support the local markets and improve Faringdon’s economy.”

August Ramblings!
| The Advertiser | page 9 |
Good day and welcome to my August ramblings. Much has been going on in remembrance of the events on the Somme one hundred years ago. Fields full of growing crops and flowering plants, including poppies, woods in full leaf. Undergrowth where “crack” German troops lay in waiting. Many facts and figures on losses are available but with little protection on the front line, even away from any fighting, many animals did die or were seriously wounded. The Royal Army Veterinary Corps came into its own, supported by the Blue Cross Fund. One poster asking for funds for the Blue Cross depicts a soldier with his fallen horse, with the wording: “ To help horses in war time and hospitals for dogs – irrespective of nationality.” 8 million horses, mules and donkeys died, with 2.5 million injured by gunfire, gas and artillery shells or downed and drowned in the relentless mud, it must have been a truly awful, life-changing experience for the troops as well. Many injured soldiers, some 10,000 men in No Man’s Land, were rescued by “ambulance dogs”. The French army used 3000 such dogs. Other dogs were messenger dogs and unbelievably 100, 000 messenger pigeons were used on the battlefield too. Resupply of such birds from lofts at the main camps were also done by baskets strapped on the backs of specially-trained dogs! Be careful where they swim and what they drink! Can I re-iterate the warnings of blue-green algae toxin poisoning, please? As veterinary professionals, we pay a subscription fee for every case we request assistance with through the Veterinary Poisons Information Service. This is some of the advice they have given us regarding such poisoning: “The toxins produced by the blue-green algae have a high acute toxicity. Death is usually rapid. The clinical picture will depend on the type of algae and toxin ingested, although it is possible that more than one type of algae/toxin could be involved in the same incident. Clinical signs may include gastrointestinal irritation, liver damage and severe neurological signs.” (sadly in some recent cases in Dartford, Kent, rapid onset of full convulsions in three dogs led to very rapid deaths).“Speed is essential when it comes to treatment. Veterinary professionals are advised to call the VPIS immediately for further information, on a case-by-case basis. Both owners and staff should wear protective clothing when treating patients.” This is because dogs become poisoned by drinking affected water that they’re swimming in and also when licking themselves dry. Public Health authorities react very rapidly to such situations so that other people and their pets don’t become affected. This week, our veterinary services have been enhanced by our experienced Chartered Physiotherapist joining the Team as part of our new Canine Rehabilitation programme. Appointments can be made directly through our Reception. Nycky has written an explanatory note to owners who make appointments. “Physiotherapy is about assisting your pet to move the best way he/she can. This includes rehabilitation to help recovery after injury, operation or neurological issue. It is also therapeutic management of long term conditions. It includes therapy on your pet’s body, exercises during physio, lifestyle advice, home exercises, devices to aid mobility, communication with vets, hydro-therapists and behaviourists. A vital part of the physiotherapy for your pet is that the owner commits to doing the home exercises that the physio will ask you to do with your pet and follows the advice of the physiotherapist. Your lifestyle will be taken into account when designing the home program. Physiotherapy is not a magic wand – it takes time and requires commitment from you to have it work the best it can. For those clients with rabbits seeking protection from a new strain of Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (HVD2), the new vaccine should be made available to us by or just before the start of August. Please give reception a call if you are interested in offering this to your rabbits. ”To close on this thoughtful and somewhat sombre piece, this month is one of the busiest for country shows in many villages around the county. We have a lot to celebrate throughout Oxfordshire and I hope that yourself and your family have a great Summer. Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595 See you next month!

And so this – the third novel from Robert Galbraith – begins. For those who are not aware, Galbraith is the crime-writing alias of JK Rowling. Throughout the series so far, Rowling has flawlessly demonstrated the same level of skill as a writer that made the Harry Potter series so compulsive. But these are strictly for adults; Rowling doesn’t shy away from the grotesque in any of these books, and Career of Evil is no exception.

In a world of tortured anti-heroes, Rowling’s detective Cormoran Strike surely ranks amongst the most tortured. The brooding ex-military amputee illegitimate son of a rock star is so vividly painted amongst these pages that you can almost reach out and touch him.

Strike plays by his own rules in all matters, including love. The ongoing chemistry between him and his assistant/second in command Robin has the reader on the edge of their seat as much as the main story. Rowling’s London is a place of peril, steeped in dark mystery, and the reader plunges into these shadows with Strike, following every twist and turn. It’s exhilarating, nail-bitingly tense, and so elegantly written that you cannot fail to notice you are in the company of a wordsmith truly at the top of her game. This has been my favourite book of the series so far. The Cuckoo’s Calling set the scene. The Silkworm showed that Rowling had in no way tempered her imagination since the Harry Potter series came to an end. But Career of Evil, for me, has cemented this series as a ‘must-read’ – much like my feeling for CS Sansom’s Shardlake series. Though I’m feeling rather ambivalent about the Sansom series at the moment – the last book being, at least for me, a dreadful disappointment. I would recommend Career of Evil – and indeed the whole series – to anyone who loves a good page-turner, a thriller that keeps them on the edge of their seat and a ‘hero’ who does things his own way. I cannot wait to see where the Rowling/Galbraith/Strike journey takes us next. Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith is available from all good bookstores now.

Summertime is a time of friends, sunshine, eating al fresco and warm evenings. It got me pondering whether it is actually one of the most sociable times of the year. Meats being marinated, barbecues being lit and salads being tossed. All with a big group of friends and family mixed in, making it really rather wonderful. Very often, in our household at any rate, things are rather impromptu. But I happen to really like spur of the moment get together's. And whilst you may not have time to go to town on the cooking, there are a lot of things you can bring to the table from the store cupboard. Try slow roasting tomatoes for instance. Cut them in half and lay them on a tray, cut side up. Scatter with finely chopped garlic and season generously. Drizzle with oil, be it basil rapeseed oil or just good old olive oil, then Roast at 160°C for 45 minutes. Once cooked drench with balsamic vinegar and serve at room temperature. Or ring the changes with coleslaw and dress it with lemon, soy and sesame oil. Maybe chop in some fennel. Then perhaps try swapping the claggy mayonnaise with a mustard French dressing in your usual potato salad and add lots of chopped parsley and chives. But there are endless possibilities aren't there? I really love marinating chicken in yogurt, coriander, lemon and crushed garlic and ginger. Then serving it with a dressing made of more yogurt, grated cucumber, chopped mint and a generous spoonful of mint sauce. A pudding I love to do, is just pushing good chocolate into a banana, through the skin and bake on the glowing embers of the barbie. Or be prepared and make this ahead for your freezer. Line a 1 litre basin with cling film. Next, cheat, and buy a Swiss roll. Cut it in to 1cm slices then line the basin with the slices getting them as close together as you can. Save some for the lid. Whisk together 400g cream cheese and 300ml double cream. Stir in 100g chopped chocolate - what ever is your favourite! - 75g glacé cherries and 75g chopped mixed peel. Add a little drop of liqueur if you like, something like grand marnier or baileys. Scrape this creamy mixture in to the lined basin then top with the remaining sponge slices. Bring the cling film over then place in the freezer for a jolly good freeze. Bring out 15 minutes before serving, turning out of the bowl and peel off the cling film. Cut in to wedges. Some Tasting Tips Appearance When tasting wine, you should first look at the wine against a white background to check its colour, its intensity and tone, all of which can be clues to the grape, country of origin and age of the wine. If you tilt the glass slightly, you can observe the core or centre of the wine and its rim, which is the outer edge of the wine. This helps identify the age…..read further for more clues………………. Whites: can vary in colour, from a very pale green to a rich, golden hue, with the paler ones usually tangy and coming from a cool climate, while the darker ones tending to have a fuller, riper flavour and be from a warm climate. Young whites often have a green or lime rim and as whites age, they tend to turn darker and more golden. Reds: can range from pink to dark purple, with the pinky ones usually tasting vibrant and fresh, while the darker ones will usually be fullerbodied and spicier. Young reds will have a purple or lilac rim and as reds mature, they tend to lighten and the rim turns from a red to a rust or orangey brown. Bouquet or Nose After gently swirling the wine in your glass (which increases the surface area, releasing delightful aroma molecules), take a good long sniff. What do you smell? It could be a simple fruit aroma, such as plums, or something more complex such as toastiness or vanilla. Palate After taking a good mouthful of the wine, breathe air in over it, so the flavours can be released. Then, as you swallow, try to also breathe out through your nose, as it is the nose/mouth combination that will give you the full flavour. As well as flavours such as lemons, gooseberries and blackcurrants, you may also notice acidity and tannin, a bitter drying taste which is common in young reds. After you have swallowed (or spat, if you are just tasting!), enjoy the aftertaste. Good wines usually linger in your mouth sensuously – this is described as having good length and is a characteristic of good quality. To give you an idea of what you are looking for, listed below are some of the more well known white and red grape varieties, against which are given some of the more typical aromas and flavours: White Grapes Chardonnay: Dry to full: apples, citrus fruits, tropical fruits, spice, oak, butter, cream, toast. Healthy Tips!
| The Advertiser | page 19 |
Is your intention to improve your Health and Wellbeing? Eating a healthy diet reduces the likelihood of becoming overweight or chronically ill. Professional sources recommend that people limit their intake of trans- and saturated fat, sugar, and salt while increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts and increase their activity levels. Most of us know the health benefits of eating a good diet and moving more, but fewer of us are motivated to eat healthily and exercise. There are a great many sources available offering us help with eating a healthy diet and exercises: books, magazines, videos and TV documentaries all give us more than enough information to make positive change. So why do we have such difficulty with eating healthily and exercising? Very few of us succeed in actually doing it. It seems that when we are tired or focused on other activities, we can fail to remember our intentions. When putting in place a specific action plan: “If I have a work meal which is out of my control I will balance that with a healthy salad when I get home” is an example of your intention to make a positive result out of a potential hiccup to your goal. Planning ahead or planning what you will do if things are beyond your control is a great way to prevent yourself from ‘falling off the wagon!’ As with a lot of things in life preparation is everything. So what is your intention? -An intention is an idea that you plan (or intend) to carry out. If you mean something, it's an intention. Your goal, purpose, or aim is your intention. It's something you mean to do. So, is it your intention to get physically fit, to take care of yourself and to improve your wellbeing? Why do you want to get fit? Are you doing it because you want to? If that is genuinely the case, then it is easier to do. You are more likely to achieve your goal. Setting your intention to do something is massively important. It is about recognising why you are motivated, making it more likely that you will make the changes you need to get what you want. When you really know what you want you can action it. This shows in the results you achieve. Some of my clients (those who achieve their goals) are clear about their intentions and, with my help with motivation and support, keep to a plan and get results. Those people who aren’t doing a fitness regime because they want to, or aren’t really doing it for themselves, or their intention isn’t really to get fit and feel better, do not have such a strong pull to get the results they want. Consequently, they have a tougher time of it, unnecessarily so in most cases! If you want the best results with your health, weight loss and wellbeing – Make sure your intention is true!
