WHO’S NEXT?
Business Update
The summer is flying by, Warm weather, Live at the Park and FollyFest, all raising the “feel good” factor around town. The markets are doing well with the Saturday monthly markets continue to go from strength to strength. The vacant retail premises are low. All this looks good for the implementation of the Faringdon Business Plan 2017-22. This is in the form of a strategic over view and leaves plenty of scope for tactical direction to achieve the key actions. Parking, an on going issue for residents and retailers is an identified challenge in the plan. Some key actions are: Creating a town prospectus to ‘sell’ Faringdon as a destination for businesses; Engaging with education providers (e.g. Faringdon Community College), to promote apprenticeships in Small and Medium Enterprises. There’s appetite to establish a Business innovation centre; this is now being investigated in order to support Faringdon's home based entrepreneurs. Tourism is one area where we undersell ourselves. Improvement to marketing and support for the visitors should see a noticeable change in the dynamics of the town. Developing a marketing strategy to promote Faringdon as a visitor destination; Working with “Experience Oxfordshire” and other bodies will ensure expanded coverage of our unique offerings. Building on trails promoted by the Pink pigeon trust, there is a desire to create new trails and encourage more business participation. These are some of the Call Trish: 01367 820060 identified areas that make up this 5-year plan. The Business plan has been sent to organisations in the area with the expectation that Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS some will be willing to take on projects that fall out of it. The plan is Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk available to view on the Chamber website and Faringdon Business group Facebook page. If you have any thoughts, comments or Faringdon Business Breakfast Club would like to get involved with shaping Faringdon's future, please Our July meeting took place at The Bell, and our new booking get in touch with the Chamber, Town Council or the Town Team. system through the website (www.http/fbbc-networking.co.uk), produced a good turnout at the Faringdon Business Breakfast Club. It is always interesting to see the wide range of business people who come to our informal, friendly group. This month we had a couple of accountants, a couple of financial advisors, a business coach, a trainer, a virtual assistant, an estate agent, a company curator, a retail shop, a chiropractor, a mortgage advisor, and an IT expert. We are an open networking group so it would not matter if seven accountants came to the same meeting! We believe that WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES there is more benefit in seeking collaboration and it is rare that attendees who have the same ‘label’ have identical products or All Gas Work services. All Plumbing Work Networking works best when people regularly attend so the group 579798 Bathrooms can get to know each other as individuals and really understand Underfloor Heating what their business is all about. Many of the attendees have been coming for several years - but it is always encouraging to see new LPG Gas members and we were delighted to see two first timers this month. Gas Appliances We are renowned as being one of the most open and friendly Boiler Servicing networking groups in the region and therefore a great place to Central Heating start networking if you have not done it before. Our focus this month was on small group networking and after the Landlord Cert's usual 60 second round of introductions, and the usual excellent SPECIALISING IN BOILER cooked breakfast from The Bell Hotel, members naturally split into small groups to find out more about each other. Time passed CHANGES AND SYSTEM quickly and it was a shame to have to interrupt to bring the UPGRADES meeting to a close. We are sure this additional knowledge about QUALITY WITH CARE each other will result in business referrals in the future. Our next meeting will be on 7th August. 0 0 0 1 Taiwan is probably not the first place you think of as being a whisky making country but at 3.30pm on 11th March 2006 the first spirit ever to be produced there ran at Kavalan Distillery in Yilan, not far from Taipei, and now the distillery is producing award winning whisky that has carved a niche for itself on the world whisky scene. The distillery was the culmination of a long held dream by the owner of the King Car Group, Mr Lee, and became possible through a change of law in Taiwan allowing private companies to distil spirits. Mr Lee put together a team that included the famous whisky consultant Jim Swan, and newly appointed Master Blender Ian Chang, (who had no previous experience in the whisky industry but whose honest appraisals of the whiskies he was given to assess at interview, using descriptors such as ‘Grandma’s wardrobe’ and ‘nail varnish’, won him the job), and the creation of Taiwan’s first whisky began. Although the distillery is situated in a beautiful landscape of greenery and mountains, with a pure, abundant water supply, any similarities to Scotland end there.
The sub-tropical climate of Taiwan means that the aim of the Kavalan team right from the start was to harness the heat and humidity, rather than fighting against it, and by using innovative methods (that Ian describes as 70% science and 30% art) produce a good quality, consistent, fruity and smooth spirit. Temperature controlled washbacks are one of the methods used to work with the climate but perhaps more important is what Kavalan call ‘maturation redefined’. Taiwan’s hot summers lead to rapid extraction of flavours and colour from casks, whilst cold winds with high rainfall in winter produce good oxidation that adds depth and additional flavours to the spirit. This makes factors such as careful selection of casks that are not too high in tannins (which would be extracted very rapidly in the high temperatures and lead to bitterness), and using different size casks depending on where they are located in the variable temperatures of the warehouse, very important and allow Kavalan to produce whisky that matures young but is smooth and full of flavour. Kavalan whisky has won many awards, including best Single Malt in the World, but for me the best demonstration of how successful they are at working with their local environment was at our recent tasting. Whether it was the rich, tropical fruit flavours of the Classic, the beautiful berry fruits and barley sweetness of the Concertmaster Port Cask Finish, the complexity of the King Car Conductor (where tropical fruits are joined by tangy green apple, a thread of vanilla pod and other flavours), the elegance of the Podium (where the fruit is counterbalanced with the vanilla of the oak), or the gorgeously rich and opulently fruity Solist Vinho Barrique, these are whiskies that put a smile on your face. The Essex Serpent By Sarah Perry
We could very well call this month’s column my ‘Girl Power’ edition. I jumped headlong into two of the most talked about books of the past year, and came up feeling like both had affected me deeply. In very different ways. I could hardly resist the beautiful William Morris-esque cover of Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent. Nor could I resist the plaudits that had been heaped on the book. Waterstones Oxford had a whole window devoted to it a few months back to celebrate the fact that it was last year’s Waterstones Book of the Year. I’m usually very reserved when it comes to such proclamations, preferring to judge for myself what’s worthy of attention. But there was something about the blurb on the back of this one that pulled me in. Widow Cora Seaborne steps into a new life, free from the bounds of her tyrannical husband, pursuing her dormant interests in the natural world. Her fascination with the legend of the Essex Serpent, a mythical monster of terrifying reputation, leads her to the marshlands of Essex, and into the life of a clergyman named William Ransome. The two become infatuated with each other and their courtship, unpredictable, tempestuous and fraught with mystery unfolds through Perry’s languid, elegant prose. The support cast is richly embroidered – Ransome’s consumptive wife, Cora’s young son with his idiosyncratic habits, her companion Martha – a no-nonsense housing campaigner – and Dr Luke Garrett, who loves Cora deeply and suffers more tremendously than he could have envisaged – make for a rich and rewarding tapestry. Along with Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Blind Assassin” and Ian McEwan’s “Atonement”, I think “The Essex Serpent” is going to be a novel I revisit again and again.

The Power By Naomi Alderman I’m a little more on the fence about “The Power”, the latest novel by “The Lessons” author Naomi Alderman. Not because of the quality of the writing – far from it. It won the Bailey’s Prize for Women’s Fiction, and deservedly so. No, it’s more that the premise of the novel (a dystopian tale of women rising up against society, able to kill with the touch of a hand) and the current political climate combined to make a discomfiting read. I was at first compelled, but eventually uncomfortable. It’s left a lasting impression on me…..but I’m not sure that’s in a good way. Perhaps if we were living in.. shall we say.. more settled times, I would feel differently.

August Ramblings!
| The Advertiser | page 9 |
Hello once more and a warm welcome to August – as warm as June and July have been, I expect the sun has burnt off the OS Rape and some grain fields, so that this is one of the earlier years regarding the start of the grain harvest. Hay has almost been made in a day or two and fruit should be sweet if not plentiful due to badly-timed frosts earlier in the year. The soft fruit we’ve managed to pick ripened before the birds found them has been truly yummy! A welcome day of rain has broken the long line of very hot days but all credit to every reader for the excellent seasonal care of your pets in hot weather. No lifethreatening heat strokes but plenty of grass awns getting to where they shouldn’t be. Ticks are very active in such weather, especially with any humidity, so do please treat regularly with effective veterinary treatments – and consider products that repel as well as kill them. Passport pet owners already appreciate these products – no bite, no parasite transmission into the bloodstream, very reduced chances of some lifelong travel diseases. Just to remind everyone of the facts regarding heat hazards where “heat stroke” overheating, truly is a 50:50 chance of survival (equally applying to EU travel!) on hot days, in less than twenty minutes, regardless of tinted windows or unclosed gaps, a lethal temperature of 46°C can be reached. Organs begin to fail at 43°C and at the very beginning, even a 2°C increase in body temperature is all it takes for heat stroke to start to kick in. Thank you for taking this on board and leaving your dog at home, even on overcast, hot days. I include in full a message from Action Fraud regarding online pet auctions. Please, always, feel comfortable to talk about a new puppy and kitten for the family with your nurses and vets in your own practice. Some breeds may not be best suitable or have significant health problems associated with that particular chosen breed. Also remember that EVERY puppy in the UK will have needed micro-chipping no later than 8 weeks of age, by Law. Imported puppies need a Rabies vaccination at 3 calendar months then a three week wait before legally eligible to be imported into the UK. That’s almost 16 weeks of age. Action Fraud (Action Fraud, Administrator, National) The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) and Action Fraud have recently noticed a rise in the reporting of pets, and in particular puppies and kittens, being advertised for sale via popular online auction websites. The fraudsters will place an advert of the pet for sale, often claiming that the pet is currently held somewhere less accessible or overseas. Upon agreement of a sale, the suspect will usually request an advance payment by money transfer or bank transfer. However, the pet does not materialise and the fraudster will subsequently ask for further advanced payments for courier charges, shipping fees and additional transportation costs. Even if further payments are made, the pet will still not materialise as it is likely to not exist. Tips to staying safe when purchasing pets: · Stay within auction guidelines. · Be cautious if the seller initially requests payment via one method, but later claims that due to ‘issues with their account’ they will need to take the payment via an alternative method such as a bank transfer. · Consider conducting research on other information provided by the seller, for example a mobile phone number or email address used by the seller could alert you to any negative information associated with the number/email address online. · Request details of the courier company being used and consider researching it. · Agree a suitable time to meet face-to-face to agree the purchase and to collect the pet. If the seller is reluctant to meet then it could be an indication that the pet does not exist. · A genuine seller should be keen to ensure that the pet is going to a caring and loving new home. If the seller does not express any interest in you and the pet’s new home, be wary. · If you think the purchase price is too good to be true then it probably is, especially if the pet is advertised as a pure-breed. · Do not be afraid to request copies of the pet’s inoculation history, breed paperwork and certification prior to agreeing a sale. · When thinking of buying a pet, consider buying them in person from rescue centres or from reputable breeders. · If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. Do have a great and safe month ahead. Thank you for joining me on another ramble through current events! Robert Elliott 21-23 High Street, Stanford In The Vale, SN7 8LH 01367 710595

STAGECOACH PERFORMING ARTS
Showstopping year for Faringdon performing arts school Following a significant expansion that saw pupils taking part in a CATS workshop with original performer Suzy Bloom, West End musical Matilda, and Lechlade Music Festival, a local performing arts school is celebrating a showstopping first year in Faringdon. Experienced entertainer James Barker established Stagecoach Performing Arts Faringdon in the heart of the town last year, with the hope of passing on his wisdom to the next generation following 21 years in the entertainment business himself. One year on, the school has seen an expansion due to such high demand in the first few months, an award-win and a non-stop schedule of performance. After receiving the ‘National Best Newcomer of the Year Award 2017’ James and his team have been praised by multiple parents for “giving each student the chance to shine”. Nicola, a mother of two students who attend commented: “Both my daughters (11 and 13) have attended a couple of similar part-time performing arts schools, but the Stagecoach Faringdon school is the only one where they are truly excited to attend and full of stories about what they have been doing afterwards. “James and his team have developed such a wonderful culture and environment which encourages the children to be the best they can be. There are so many opportunities for the students to share their work through performances both locally and further afield. They have taken the skills and attitude developed at Stagecoach Faringdon back into their school and personal lives with increased confidence and willingness to get involved in new activities. I'm sure this will stay with them forever into their adult lives.” Principal James, a father of two himself, has been overwhelmed with the reception from parents and the local community since starting the school in Faringdon, the first of its kind in the area. He says of the last year: “I’m absolutely thrilled about the success of the school. It was a big risk and worry at first as I was unsure how it would do but I’m delighted to see the success of all the hard work put in both from the students, myself and the team. “It’s wonderful to be able to deliver educational yet fun and inspiring classes to the talented children of Faringdon and the surrounding community and see their confidence blossom through the arts.” The school is now looking forward to even bigger and better things with a Mamma Mia workshop planned hosted by a West End star and their biggest performance yet at Disneyland Paris’ prestigious pre-parade in 2018. Stagecoach Performing Arts Faringdon is part of a network of more than 600 part-time Performing Arts Schools Worldwide. Early Stages classes are available for children aged four to six and Main Stages classes take place for six to 18 year olds every Saturday. For more information about Stagecoach and how to get involved with their upcoming events, please visit their website at http://www.stagecoach.co.uk/faringdon or call 01367 240663

Find Your Way through The Planning Process
Be it a completely new property or extending and improving your current home, each application is considered on its own merits. The upside of this is that whilst there are some common requirements that must be considered, there should be the flexibility to tailor an application to meet your needs. So we set out to give you an outline of what the process is and point you towards a great free resource to help you ascertain what you will need planning for. Despite all the authorities that get involved, they all agree on the following six steps: 1. Pre-application advice – there is now the option of “sounding out” your local planning authority (LPA) which in most rural areas will be the district council - for example the Vale of White Horse - for advice on whether your application might be approved and/or what information they would require within your formal application. You do pay for this service but it can be much less than a full application. 2. Application and validation - most applications can be made online which will step you through all the documentation that needs to be submitted and the correct fees (currently £172 as a householder or £385 for a new dwelling). Getting things right at this stage makes the job of the local authorities easier and they do not have to chase you for documentation which will cause delays. 3. Consultation and publicity - this is when it all starts to feel more real with letters being sent to neighbours and where applicable, to various stakeholders for an expert view. Where needed, notices are placed in the local press and on site. The plans can also be viewed online and commented on. 4. Site and assessment - a planning officer will visit the site against the backdrop of planning policies and any responses received at the previous stage. 5. Recommendation - the planning officer will then indicate as to whether they will be recommending its approval or refusal for the planning authority to then make a final decision. 6. Decision - whilst some planning officers will be reporting back to a manager or group, some senior planning officers have what is referred to delegated powers meaning they can make a decision without passing it up the chain. This means a decision can be reached quicker. Alternatively it will be considered at the next scheduled planning committee within the LPA at which the appointed councillors sit. The final outcome of either approved or refused can seem very binary, however both will typically come with conditions or an explanation. In the case of approval, it will be subject to the requested conditions being met and for a refusal, the grounds for this will also be included. For a refusal, you do have the right to appeal which is dealt with by the Planning Inspectorate which is an independent government body. To find out more about how we can help with your planning application, contact Ed Preece on 01367 820 070.

Healthy Living!
| The Advertiser | page 19 |
There are a lot of influences that affect our current and future health. Being aware of some of them is the first step to making it easier to improve our health and wellbeing. Many factors can combine to affect our health. Our environment can have an immediate effect, for example if we live in a built-up area, next to a busy road or if we sit in a car or work at a desk all day. Also factors such as our genetics, our income and education levels. Did your father have heart disease? If you don’t have a car, can you afford to travel to a supermarket for cheap fruit and vegetables? Maybe less obvious are our relationships with friends and family and our support network (whether it be work or social groups). And of course the food we eat and the physical activities we partake in. All impact our health to a greater or lesser extent. Whatever our circumstances I do believe we can always do something to improve. One category that is worth focusing on is our behaviour! How much do we value ourselves and how much interest do we have in eating well and exercising regularly? Our body is designed to survive! I am sure we all want our bodies to survive for as long as possible and in the best condition possible. To a large degree how this happens is down to how we treat our bodies, and to do this we have to; 1. Be aware of what we do or eat affects our body 2. Take responsibility for what we put into our body 3. Behave in ways that benefit our body No matter where you’re starting from, taking control of your diet will always get results. We are surrounded by unhealthy and highly processed foods, some of which can be just as addictive as drugs - it can be tough to change to healthier eating habits. Have you ever thought you might be a carboholic? Eating your tasty dessert probably fails to satisfy and leads to craving for more. Eating sugary, processed foods in moderation can be difficult, and eating them in excess can result in superfluous calories, which can lead to a cycle of weight gain and unhappiness. A ‘slip’ leads to a ‘craving’ then to a ‘binge’ and self-criticism. Continued ‘slips’ can result in a lowering of your mood and of your health. How can you fix this? It’s easy to say ‘try not to eat sugary, processed foods’ but how do you actually do this? Here are a few pointers. Surprisingly, eating fat-rich foods (healthy fats such as avocado and whole nuts are important here) or high protein foods can reduce your carbohydrate cravings by making you feel fuller for longer. If you go out for a meal, have a starter so you don’t have any room left for a dessert! Soup is particularly good for making you feel full. Avoid environments where processed foods are readily available. If you go to the cinema take a healthy snack so you’re not tempted to buy that large bag of Revels! If you go out for drinks with friends eat a small healthy meal first so you’re less interested in those chips later. Don’t keep unhealthy food and snacks in the house, so when you weaken there’s nothing to give in to. Keep healthy snacks instead, such as mixed nuts, fruit, oatcakes, yoghurt pots. You don’t have to eat carrot sticks (though they’re great), just avoid the sugar and crisps! Above all, connect with people who, like you, want to make positive change. They will help you to maintain a good healthy regime and keep you on your road to better long-term health. You’ll also help them to stay on track too! Don’t expect quick fixes to solve all your problems, take responsibility for yourself and treat your body with respect. Is it really that hard to be healthy? Your choices matter! Make better choices and you will see positive change! Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com

Summer Sparklers Celebrating the long summer evenings definitely calls for something bubbly! One of the great loves of my life is without a doubt, sparkling wine – ranging from Champagne through to (good quality) Cava. The allure lies in its finesse, the spritz of bubbles that precede the refreshing acidity that cleanses the palate with the subtlety of fruit flavour; anything from the citrus family – lemons and limes to the complexity of brioche and freshly baked bread. It offers such versatility in food matching – the crisp acidity providing the leverage of matches between various creamy dishes or even those with a bit of spice. But most of all, its elegance can be suitably enjoyed on its own as an aperitif! Some interesting bubbly facts (which will undoubtedly win you friends and influence others!):

Q: Where do the bubbles come from? A: All wines result from fermentation, which is the process whereby yeast turns sugar (in grape juice) into alcohol and carbon dioxide gas. Fermentation takes place in large vats, so the carbon dioxide escapes into the air. With still wines, that’s the end of the story. But for Champagne and other traditionally made sparkling wines, there’s another step involved. When the regular fermentation is complete, a small amount of sugar and yeast is added and the wine is then bottled and capped. A second fermentation now takes place, and as the gas cannot escape, it becomes part of the wine, in the form of tiny bubbles. Vintage or Non-Vintage? Non-vintage refers to the blend of wines produced in different years. The winemaker tries to balance the blend so that the producer’s ‘house style’ stays consistent from year to year. Occasionally, a single year’s growing conditions are good enough to create a fine, well-balanced wine that needs no assistance. In that case, a producer ‘declares a vintage’ and places the year on the label. In June 1998, 500 bottles of 1907 Heidseick Champagne were brought to the surface by divers exploring the Joenkoeping, a WW 1 Russian ship sunk by a torpedo from a German U-Boat in 1916. Salvage organisers found the 91 year old Champagne to be fresh and lively, apparently well preserved by the darkness and 1.1⁰C temperature at the bottom of the Baltic coast of Finland. Named after a Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzars are the biggest bottles of Champagne money can buy. Standing just over 2.5 feet high, Nebuchadnezzars hold the equivalent of 20 regular bottles of top shelf nectar – enough to fill the glasses of 160 of your closest friends!! And I leave you with this quote: ‘Come brothers, hurry I am drinking stars!’ Dom Pérignon (1658-1715) The French monk accredited with discovering how to make Champagne.
