WHO’S NEXT?
Call Trish: 01367 820060 Cowleaze Farm, Woolstone, Oxon SN7 7QS Email: thedogstudio@live.co.uk Faringdon Business Breakfast Club As our summer weather was keeping us warm we were lucky to have Ayyaz Hameed from tea importers Witney and Mason to come and talk to us about the ‘quality world of tea’. Each meeting includes time for everyone to tell us about their business in 60 seconds. The variety of topics covered is always amazing and, in this meeting, we heard about a champagne ‘quality’ sparkling wine, speculation about the future of VAT and an exercise that taught us to be more aware of our feet to name but a few. Our guest speaker Ayyaz Hameed opened his talk with the often-controversial topic of adding milk to tea. After taking a poll where nearly everyone admitted that they do have tea with milk he gave us the background to where and why this might have started. Apparently, tea was given to Indian workers to boost their energy and it was added to their traditional milk-based drink. However now it seems that most people add milk to tea on the basis of taste. Ayyaz indicated that with the finest of teas it was not necessary to add milk as they on their own are not bitter. He told us that most ‘supermarket’ teas contain eighteen types of tea, but that pure tea produced from a single estate would not need milk as it tasted wonderful just on its own. Ayyaz generously gave out some samples of ‘Anytime Tea’ which I have certainly enjoyed. Our next meeting takes place on 6th August 2018 when we will be holding our small group networking activity where we identify common themes to discuss amongst members who work in similar markets.

Business Update This seemingly non-stop summer goes on and on, but it all helps bring out the best in our community events such as “Live at the Park” and “FollyFest”. If only there were enough volunteer groups to organise events like these every weekend of the year! So do we now have to accept that a vibrant town centre is the exception rather than the norm? Many of us have (and continue to) work tirelessly to prevent the inevitable decline of our historic town centre. But maybe it is time to change the offerings of the market place and let it become, what was once hinted at by a town councillor some years ago, a centre of excellence for antiques and coffee shops. It seems to work for Burford and some other Cotswold towns. We still have a few “destination shops” that will continue to thrive but the general mood amongst retailers is that many are finding trading very tough right now. Please support them when you can. In Faringdon, the recent closure of Lloyds Bank was met with mixed emotions from the business community. What has become apparent (and Carterton reflects these comments) was that the mobile unit is not suitable for an all year round service. The small interior and no offering of shelter outside is going to be problematic when the weather conditions change in a few months time. This is a matter that will be addressed in the near future. This will be the last update by the Chamber of Commerce. Due to committee members having less time available to devote to this and other projects, it has been decided that the Faringdon Chamber will go into dormancy later this year. The Faringdon Business Group will take over the content of this column from next month. The Chamber will continue to support the Community Ball, FCC “Business Studies” Award, Christmas trees for the next year at least.

Museum exhibition to open in Faringdon A new exhibition ‘Hospital: Faringdon’s Pump House in WWI’ will open in the Pump House, Faringdon, on August 17th, 2018. The exhibition will feature previously unseen items from Lord Faringdon’s personal collection, which have been in storage at Buscot Park. His grandmother, Lady Violet Henderson, was a registered nurse caring for her husband, brother, father and uncle, who had been wounded in the Boer War (1899-1902). With the onset of war, she took the decision to set up an Auxiliary Red Cross Hospital at her home, Kitemore House at Shellingford, where she and four nurses cared for wounded ‘inmates’. The hospital was transferred to The Pump House in Faringdon during the First World War. Sally Thurston, Clerk to Faringdon Town Council, says ‘the Town Council are very excited to be working with Buscot Park and The Company Curator to develop this museum exhibition in the centre of Faringdon. Our residents have long wanted to see a dedicated museum, that celebrates Faringdon’s rich and diverse history. This will be the first step in realising that ambition.’ The exhibition is being curated by Faith Carpenter, Director of The Company Curator, with the support of Faringdon Town Council and Buscot Park Estate. Faith would like to involve local residents and to show stories and items with local importance. “We are asking anyone who has items connected with Faringdon’s hospital in WW1 if they would like to lend them to have them displayed, or to tell us their stories to see if they would be suitable for featuring in the exhibition. It will be lovely to be able to show items from Faringdon in the exhibition and to tell the stories of those involved.” If you have a story, photograph or an item connected with the Red Cross Auxiliary Hospitals at the Pump House in Faringdon or Kitemore, please email heritage.assets@thecompanycurator.co.uk. The exhibition will run from August 18th, 2018 for approximately six months. Faith Carpenter MA heritage.assets@thecompanycurator.co.uk www.thecompanycurator.co.uk 07842 320691

Michelle Uzzell Our loved and very well-known, talented hair stylist. Born and raised here in Faringdon, with her 6 sisters. I do have to say, Michelle’s mum must be a very special lady! What a lot of girls all under one roof, it must have been fun! Michelle attended Faringdon primary school and continued to Faringdon Community College. Leaving school, she decided she wanted to become a hairdresser and started her first job working as an apprentice at the hairdresser on the roundabout. You may remember it as Slicks, Renaissance and Bellavista. Michelle fully qualified with her City and Guilds certificate and achieved hairdressing levels 1, 2, and 3! As she started her own family, she took the very big step of becoming self-employed to fit her career around her number one love and priority; her family. Her love of hair styling followed in a very close second. Moving on and renting a chair in Dawns, The Barbers Shop, in the centre of Faringdon, she was able to have the bottom half of the shop with her own door for the ladies to use, this worked exceptionally well for Michelle and found herself there for a further two years! Then came the very big decision and dream, to move out on her own into her own premises, which naturally was named Michelle Uzzell Hair Stylist, because everybody knew her and her name! Michelle has achieved a beautiful interior in her shop, with the help of her Dad, making her premises relaxing and peaceful, a place we love to go and have our stunning colours and cuts done. We are conveniently able to stock up on all our hairdressing products. In and around the Faringdon area, Michelle’s hairdressing skills and her talent with colour has given her a tremendous reputation! All a person needs to do for a recommendation is look or speak to any of her clients, who are always proud to say Michelle Uzzell is their hairdresser! From every day cuts and blow-dries to formal hairstyles and weddings, she will even go along to the venue or your home to help the lucky lady look her best, on her special day. We all know the demands of having your own family and little ones to look after. Michelle has Max who is 9 and little Molly now 6. The need to be flexible is a must; Michelle has this all in her stride not forgetting it’s not just hairdressing! With any business she has her business accounting, purchasing and cleaning of the salon and home, she even managed to cope with having the time off work to have the necessary carpal tunnel surgery done to one wrist and then the other! Thank goodness the two surgeries were a great success “It’s like having two new wrists” for Michelle, these are the tools of her trade, so very relieved, she achieved this superb outcome! She has now been in her salon for the last three years and is joined by Charlie Ralph who is a nail technician. Michelle is a very treasured part of our Faringdon community with 20 years’ experience, we join her in being very proud of the successful business she has built in London Street Michelle Uzzell hair Stylist! Please call Michelle to make an appointment and join her happy customers and friends on

Welcome to what’s likely to be another very hot month – although tempered by the fact that some rain can be expected as it’s the summer holidays? This is written early due to Sammie’s (my Daughters) impending wedding, so we could be flooded out before you read this! From the slow but steady heat that started in June, it will be interesting to see how insect populations and flowering plants cope with this amazing weather , which could last up to September. It’ll also be interesting to test how sweet the blackberries will be, with their flowers covering the hedgerows as I write. Like the late July Big butterfly Count, Bees’ Needs Week (17 to 23 July) will continue to be an annual event co-ordinated by Defra, involving a number of charities, businesses, conservation groups and academic institutions to help raise awareness of the needs of bees and other pollinators. It’s all part of the grand National Pollinator Strategy in England’s wider work for bees and other pollinators. As I keep on saying, bees and other pollinators are absolutely vital to the production of our favourite foods and for commercial and home-grown planting. Bees’ Needs Week is a great opportunity for us to find out more about how pollinators work and how we can support them. There’ always something we can simply do or offer them. Bumblebee Conservation have summarised five simple actions that we can take to help our pollinators and make sure that their populations are sustained Here they are in summary: 1. Grow more flowers, shrubs and trees; 2. Let your garden grow wild; 3. Cut your grass less often; 4. Don’t disturb insect nest and hibernation spots; 5. Think carefully about whether to use pesticides. A little nearer to home, and very heart-warming, was the story of a young man and his dog, I can only simply pass on briefly what was written, Joel Sayer and his yellow Labrador cross Golden Retriever, Caddie, made the final of the Crufts Hero Dog competion last year and have helped change so many other people’s lives around, including his own and his family’s. Joel has autism and didn’t speak as such until five years of age, not wishing to go outdoors and being in his own little world. In 2012, a medical professional suggested that an assistance dog might help him. This was set in motion and Caddie came to live with the Sayer family as Joel’s assistance dog. Within 20 minutes, the 2 year old caddie and Joel were out in the garden, playing with a ball. Caddie helps Joel with lots of tasks and provides stability. Mrs Sayer said that “when Joel can’t cope, he paces around, but Caddie will nudge him, Joel will start stroking him and he’ll come back into our world.” When Mrs Sayer told Joel about going to Crufts, she wasn’t sure how he would react. “But Joel was so positive. He said that he would do it because he hoped it would help raise funds and train more assistance dogs.” Since Joel and Caddie made the final of the Crufts Hero Dog competition last year, the 14-year-old has raised more than £50,000 for assistance dog charity Dogs for Good, which has been able to train four more dogs with the money. Crufts had a huge impact on Joel, says Mrs sayer. “All of a sudden he had a voice, not only for Dogs for Good, but for autism, too. He treats it like a job. He could talk and say what he needs, when he needs. He grew up overnight.” Since then, Joel and Caddie have gone to London and Buckingham Palace, Joel has ordered a meal in a restaurant for the first time and gone in a taxi and on a train. May we all wish Joel and his family all the best for the future and the same for those other families he’s continuing to help through his fundraising, with family support. Moving on to a completely different subject, how exciting is this: last month scientists were planning to use DNA sampling techniques to find out if there is any basis for the legend of the Loch Ness Monster. Professor Neil Gemmell from the University of Otago told BBC News he is not expecting to find a monster, but believes there could be “a biological explanation for some of the stories”. Such “stories” have been around since the 6th Century AD, when Irish monk Saint Columba is said to have seen a ‘water beast’ in the River Ness. Further ‘sightings’ of a pre-historic or dragon-like animal were later reported to Scottish newspapers in the 1930s. Since then, a number of people have claimed to capture photographs, video footage or sonar images of the creature, but the scientific community regards it as a phenomenon without biological basis - believing sightings are down to hoaxes or misidentification of other objects “Whilst the prospect of looking for evidence of the Loch Ness monster is the hook to this project, there is an extraordinary amount of new knowledge that we will gain from the work about organisms that inhabit the Loch Ness - the UK’s largest freshwater body.” The team are planning to identify plants, fish and other organisms by comparing their DNA sequences with those held on a large, international database. Making The Most Of Your Garden!
Making the Most of Your Garden This Summer If you are on the market or staying put, now is the ideal time to make the most of the warm weather and tackle some of those outside and garden jobs. As estate agents, we will occasionally make reference to “curbside appeal and it is surprising what a few simple touches can do to make the outside of a property more appealing.
Hanging baskets are a quick, easy and clever way of having some temporary foliage and flowers at a pleasing eye level. They work well at entrance points, below balconies or either side of a feature window. We tend to think that we have to fill the basket with pretty flowers but actually something more practical (and tasty!), such as strawberries, tomatoes or herbs work just as well. Not only will you have a crop to harvest, you will always be greeted by a fresh, fragrant smell. One of the favourites amongst gardens, is the versatility and flexibility that growing in pots offers. The size and style of pots seems almost endless, as does the range of things that can be grown. A quick poll of the Waymark office revealed that we have everything from Sweet Peas to potatoes! And as part of this year’s Faringdon in Bloom, we have created our own window floral display which can be seen throughout the duration of the competition.
Along with the fragrant bonus of a just cut lawn, mowing the grass, tending to the borders and cutting a good clean edge around lawns, paving and paths can immediately give a garden a clean crisp finish. Keeping the grass watered and fertilised will not only promote a healthy lawn but also help keep a rich dark pallet to contrast colourful flowers and hedges against.
If your garden is a bit on the compact side, there is a little trick that can help. Having your garden divided into distinct areas or having a selection of central features, means that we linger longer on each piece and it is this slight increase in time spent looking that actually gives the impression of more space.
Painting fences not only freshens them up but can also add variety of colour or continue a theme from the house to the outside. If you are feeling particularly brave, how about giving your shed a new colour look!
We certainly notice in the summer months that gardens take on more importance and move up a buyers criteria when house hunting. For us, one of the best perks of the job is seeing the fantastic range of garden ideas that the residents of Faringdon and beyond cultivate throughout the year.

1000 At the time of writing, the weather has been hot, hot, hot for weeks on end and so I’ve put together a few ideas on whisk(e)y based drinks to enjoy when the sun is shining - or even when it’s not! One of my criteria for summer drinks is that they should be quick and easy and, with this in mind, one of the simplest ways of using whisky is with ice and a mixer in a highball glass. One of my personal favourites is to pair a peaty whisky with dry ginger as the smoke is strong enough to stand up against the spicy ginger and the whole blends together most refreshingly. Alternatively, most whiskies (peated or otherwise) go well with soda and, rather like adding a splash of water, if you just use a little soda then it can help to open up the whisky so don’t be afraid to use a malt if you’re looking to make a short but refreshing drink. For a longer drink then a decent blend, like the Big T or the Antiquary, topped up with plenty of soda would be perfect.

There is something rather decadent about sipping on a cocktail in the sunshine and the Whisky Sour is an eternal favourite that has been around since the mid-1800s. The basic recipe is to put 60ml whisk(e)y (traditionally bourbon), 30ml fresh lemon juice and 15ml sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously and then strain into a chilled glass. What you are aiming for is the perfect balance of sweet and sour so experiment with the proportions of the ingredients to see what suits your palate best and try different whiskies (not forgetting that the whisk(e)y you are using will influence the level of sweetness). This is a drink that can be varied in all sorts of ways so, for instance, to increase the smoothness add an egg white (making it into a Boston sour), or for a Frisco Sour you substitute Benedictine for the sugar syrup and add in lime juice as well as the lemon. Finally, a whisky Mint Julep just has summer written all over it and is, again, very simple to make. Place 12 ½ ml sugar syrup and 10 mint leaves in a glass and gently muddle to extract the oil from the mint. Add 65ml bourbon, fill the glass with crushed ice and stir well. Garnish with a sprig of mint. As an alternative to bourbon you could use rye whiskey and this will add in a hint of spice. Importantly, as the star ingredient in this is the whiskey then choose something that has plenty of character that won’t lose its flavour as the ice melts, so probably not that bottle of cheap bourbon you’ve got stuck away at the back of the cupboard for your non whisky drinking friends… Fran Thomas

Carrie from the Lotus retreat explains the healing power of Ayurvedic Marma massage. The Lotus Retreat is one of the few holistic therapy centres in the UK to offer Ayurvedic Marma massage. Hari and I were lucky enough to study at the world renown Green's Ayurvedic hospital in northern Kerala, where Marma massage originated. This deeply healing and restorative treatment works on 107 vital energy points on the body releasing tension and blockages. The benefits of Marma Massage are profound. When Marma points become blocked, vital life-force energy - or prana - cannot flow and we start to feel exhausted, out of balance and will eventually become unwell. Conversely when the Marma points are massaged and stimulated correctly the entire body and all it's organs are flooded with life-force energy. We become deeply nourished on a cellular and energetic level. We again feel calm and clear - emotionally, mentally and physically. Working on these points for health and healing was developed thousands of years ago by rishis (sages), martial artists and Ayurvedic doctors in south India through deep study and meditation. Fundamental to Ayurveda is the concept that we are born with an inherent 'dosha' or body type. There are three main dosha types: Vata - air, Pitta - fire, Kapha - earth and water. Each of us is a combination of these doshas and the qualities of the doshas explain many aspects of our physiology and personality down to our metabolism, build, sleep patterns, temperament and even what foods and environments we like or dislike. Knowing your dosha is key to understanding the roots of disease and how it can be treated and avoided. Marma massage is one of the few massage types that is effective for all dosha types, indeed Marma massage is thought to be one of the greatest healing secrets of Ayurveda and is only recently enjoying a revival in India and across the world. It's interesting to consider why it is that Chinese medicine is so well integrated into our culture, whilst Ayurveda - which is an equally sophisticated, ancient and powerful natural healing system - has very little presence. This is largely thanks to our colonial ancestors who, during their centuries long reign of the subcontinent, worked hard to replace the "primitive" concepts of Ayurveda (which relies mainly on the use of herbs, diet, massage and is deeply holistic in nature) with allopathic medicine. When Indian immigrants reached our shores they brought little of their ancient healing tools with them. Thankfully it's knowledge wasn't completely lost and in pockets of India - especially in Kerala where it originated - it continued to flourish and its teachings passed on within India and more recently to students and patients from across the globe. Hari and I are happy to be playing a small part in bringing these ancient healing therapies to a wider audience. To find out more about Marma massage and dosha consultations please visit our website or pop into the Lotus Retreat for a chat. www.thelotusretreat.com 2 London Street . Faringdon . SN7 7AA

War Memorial Trust Remembrance Exhibition The War Memorial Trust and the Royal British Legion will be holding its tenth exhibition of war time memorabilia in the Old Town Hall, to reflect on the impact that wars have made on local families. This year marks the centenary of the end of the first World War, ‘the war to end all wars’ and the overlooked battles of 1918 that cost the lives of many local men. If you have any memorabilia, particularly photographs, letters, postcards and stories, that you would like to share, not just of WW1 but of any conflicts with which your family members were involved, please bring them to the Faringdon Town Council offices (in the Pump Rooms on the Market Place) before Wednesday, 7th November; the office is open between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. We would be particularly interested in stories and memorabilia involving local women and their role in WW1 and how the war affected families on the ‘home front’. Any precious items that you may think to be too valuable to exhibit can be photocopied and the Trust will take care to return original items to their owners. The exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November, and after the Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday 11th until 1:00pm. Volunteers who would like to help in manning the exhibition should contact the Faringdon Town Council Offices on 01367 240281.

Faringdon Writing Group The cupboard door stood ajar, which when he noticed it, pulled him up short. His heart sank. How was this possible? He’d always been so very careful to keep the door firmly shut; locked down tight. The only key was kept on his key ring, which never left his side. Was it still there? He pulled the heavy bunch of keys from his pocket; sure enough, there it was. Could someone have made use of the key while he was asleep? Impossible; his keys had been under his pillow, no one could have taken them without waking him. Then a horrible thought struck him; was it possible that it was intelligent, and worse, that it was cunning and clever enough to have worked out a way of freeing itself? That must be it; it had to be the only possible answer. He realised with a feeling of dread that he had under-estimated it, that he might have made a very serious mistake. He turned on his heel, aiming to put distance between himself and the door, but then thought better of it. What if it was still in there? He took a step towards the door and very, very carefully eased it open. He stood there listening; not a sound, nothing, the cupboard was empty. The only evidence of it’s occupant was that familiar smell. It was then that he realised, with a sickening jolt, that the windows and doors were locked, that he was very alone and that it must be loose somewhere in the house….. What do we really need to stay healthy? Staying healthy will help you to feel happier and stronger. There are some basic things you can do to stay healthy. You will need to eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water, exercise and get enough sleep. Sounds obvious doesn’t it? But the basics are important. # To keep your body working at its best you need to look after it. # To stay healthy our body needs a balanced diet of good quality food high in nutrients. Without a balance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals our bodies would not survive. We also forget that water is probably the most important nutrient that we take for granted. It is in a lot of the foods we consume but not always in large enough quantities for our body to perform optimally. Here in the western world our basic human survival needs are generally cared for i.e. oxygen, water, food, shelter and sleep. However, as individuals, we are inclined to be the ones who upset the balance by not taking the essentials seriously enough. So surely healthy living is simple right? It seems that it is not the case! I asked one of my clients if they could change anything in their life what would it be? The answer was “Not to be fat and lose weight!” - which made sense as that was why we were training, “Ok, so what else?”, I said. “To be happy” was the reply. I hear this a lot. Not being happy can lead to our misuse of food and drink and make us lose our motivation to exercise. If this resonates with you then you are not alone. There are a myriad of triggers causing us to lose our positive attitude. But on the flip side there is always another trigger to bring us back to wanting to be healthy, fit and strong again and, along with that, happy and well. Proven Ways to Be Happy ● Start exercising: Any amount is better than nothing ● Improve your diet: Healthy body = healthy mind ● Improve your sleep: You will be more able to cope with stress ● Spend time with friends and family: Interaction with others can improve our mood ● Enjoy being outside: Vitamin D is essential for health and well being ● Help others: Feel good by making someone else happy ● Practice being happy: It can be contagious How do I start to feel well again? ● Eat vegetables with every meal ● Always keep emergency healthy snacks with you ● Eliminate tempting foods from reach ● Create an exercise regime and stick to it ● Try a new activity with friends and enjoy it No need to make it complicated! Make healthy living simple! Richard Marfell – Wellness Coach 07800636004 Richardmarfelluk@gmail.com
| The Advertiser | page 18 | life felt golden, a microcosm of every ideal childhood summer I loved.
By Janet Fitch Before last week, I hadn’t taken a full weeks leave for three years. It sounds dramatic, but it’s only when you stop and think about it that it actually is. We’re all in such a massive rush to prove ourselves and be our best that we often neglect our own needs – physical, mental and spiritual. I’m the very worst, because I feel very much that when you create your own work ‘kingdom’ that you are thoroughly responsible for every single thing that happens. But I finally stepped away. For a whole week. And headed to the wilds of Wales, to a beautiful refurbished coach house in the grounds of a manor house in Pembrokeshire. And it was only when I arrived there, that I remembered what stillness was. The world moves at a different pace, and it wasn’t a bind to actually unwind, from the moment we got through the front door, though my anxiety about running over the landlady’s many roaming dogs was a little slower to subside. We were blessed with the best weather we’d had in a long time it was yet to reach its scorched earth fever pitch in which we currently find ourselves – and England were still in the World Cup.
I picked my holiday reading with much forethought, and I chose very well. Alongside my essential Jackie Collins doorstops I had packed an extraordinary novel by Janet Fitch called White Oleander. Not a new book. It was published in 1999 and had sat on my bookshelf unread since I picked it up in a charity shop on Chislehurst High Street in 2008. It sat there for too long. I should have read this book years ago. It tells the story of Astrid, and her free spirit mother Ingrid who still spirituality conceals a jealous and possessive heart. When Ingrid murders her boyfriend, the story becomes a wending journey through the various foster homes that Astrid falls in with. This books melts with evocative language and imagery and I was utterly captivated by each page. Reading it during a heat wave in the middle of Pembrokeshire was an immersive experience - the book, the weather, the setting and the liberation of finally taking a holiday was intoxicating. I’m going to take more leave. And I’m going to recommend this book to everyone I can. White Oleander is available from all good bookstores and online.

Hello, I am Ian your new columnist for the wine section. I have decided to start with something topical and have a chat about wines for barbecues and general outdoor eating. The matching of wine to food rule goes out of the window for outdoor eating as we tend to prefer easy drinking wines, that can pretty much go with anything. A nice light red will go equally well with a burger and a piece of salmon. Chicken goes with anything, both sauces and wines. A big favourite in the summer is of course rose wines, nicely chilled and with a light fruit flavour. The ones made from a red grape can often taste of strawberry and raspberry, which is really refreshing. Those made from white grapes have a small quantity of red wine added. So if Sauvignon blanc is the base wine, you will get most of those flavours. For red wines, a Cote du Rhone is nice and light and suits most peoples tastes. You could also try a light Pinot Noir from New Zealand or Burgundy. With both wines, they are light on tannins and have enough fruit flavours to make your mouth water. For whites, the go to wines are Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Grigio and Gavi. All have great mouthful of luscious fruits to deliver a nice fresh crisp glass of wine. So the next question is where to get your wine. In my experience of facing the wall of wine, you need a few guides. In general, if it is below £5 you are taking a gamble. In the £5 - £10 bracket, you can get some really nice wines. Over £10 is where you need to get a bit more comfortable with the type of wine you like. I will pick on some examples to keep an eye out for over the coming months here or in my blog. I would give Tesco finest Gavi and Pinot Grigio a try, I find both enjoyable wines. For Sauvignon blanc, I like The Ned, available in several supermarkets. The Ned is also available in Magnums (two bottle size) which is impressive when you serve from one. Try Cote du Rhone village as they have better flavours. At a recent wine tasting party, I served a New Zealand Pinot called Ara (Waitrose), which most enjoyed. With Rose, I find those made from a grape called Grenache, tend to be the ones hitting the strawberry flavours. At the same tasting, I served Oriel Coteaux Provence Rose (Tesco), which everyone said was the best rose they had tasted. It does sneak over the £10 barrier though. I would love feedback on which wines you have enjoyed during the summer months. There is so much to discuss with wines. Over 5000 grape varieties, tens of thousands of wine makers all around the world. Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy your wine and please drink responsibly. Ian Lloyd
